Off Night announces play selection and cast for In Her Words: A Celebration of Female Playwrights

Off Night Productions presents In Her Words: A Celebration of Female Playwrights, a play-reading festival running Sunday, October 27- Tuesday, October 29 at the Constellation Playhouse (107 W 9th Street). Four plays written by women will be presented by four local, women-led theater companies.

On Sunday afternoon, Resilience Productions will present A Selection of Scenes from Resilience: Indiana’s Untold Stories by Gladys DeVane in collaboration with Danielle Bruce, followed by Monroe County Civic Theatre, presenting ASYLUM or Madness & the Whole Thing by Patricia Krahnke, on Sunday evening. On Monday, the Babel Theater Project will present a reading of Ana Carneiro’s Babel. On Tuesday, Off Night Productions will close out the festival with the hilarious and poignant Five Times In One Night by Chiara Atik.

Tickets to each performance are just $10.00, and are on sale now via the Off Night Productions website, at www.offnightproductions.org. Learn more about the individual plays by reading the descriptions below.

Off Night Productions presents a staged reading of Five Times in One Night by Chiara Atik, starring Valerie Kilmer and Bobby Ayala Perez, on Tuesday, October 29, at 7:00 PM at the Constellation Playhouse.

In this clever (and extremely funny) play about relationships, five couples explore the delights and disappointments of their sex lives. Whether they are the first two people on Earth or the last two, modern partners with shifting needs, exes on the eve of a life-altering event, or twelfth-century pen pals, following those most natural desires uncovers truths about their humanity. Five Times in One Night is a hilarious examination of intimacy through the ages.

Resilience Productions presents a staged reading of A Selection of Scenes from Resilience: Indiana’s Untold Stories by Gladys Devane in collaboration with Danielle Bruce, on Sunday, October 27, at 2:00 PM at the Constellation Playhouse. An official cast announcement is forthcoming.

Resilience Productions will be performing excerpts from the 2016 original play, Resilience: Indiana’s Untold Stories. Centered around Indiana’s bicentennial, history is brought to life through the compelling stories told by two of the town’s oldest citizens.

Set against the backdrop of Indiana’s often overlooked history, these two centenarians reflect on how, against all odds, extraordinary African American men and women turned their tragedy into triumph and are worthy of being celebrated.

Monroe County Civic Theater (MCCT) presents a staged reading of ASYLUM or Madness & the Whole Thing by local playwright Patricia Krahnke, on Sunday, October 27, at 7:00 PM at the Constellation Playhouse. A cast announcement is forthcoming.

In ASYLUM or Madness & the Whole Thing, Anne’s husband David, a narcissistic, emotionally abusive immigration lawyer, is harboring Rafiq, a young Afghan refugee, in their cramped New York apartment. This fact alarms Anne's fiercely loyal childhood friend Savannah, a meddling, bigoted free spirit, who asks with dark suspicion, “Where will this refugee go? What will this refugee do?”.

Long exhausted from negotiating peace between her warring husband and friend, Anne has entered her own safe harbor -- heroin addiction. As she struggles with longing for family, nurture, peace, and safety, she finds an unexpected ally in the mysterious, sweet young stranger who sleeps on her sofa and prays in her living room.

Babel Theater Project presents a staged reading of Babel, by Ana Carneiro, on Monday, October 28, at 7:00 PM at the Constellation Playhouse. A cast announcement is forthcoming.

In Babel, winner of the Italian Hystrio Prize, linguist Thomas Ruhe races against time to save a vanishing language. A powerful tale of cultural erasure and personal alienation, Babel explores the human cost of globalization. Can we preserve our roots in a rapidly changing world? Or are we all destined to lose ourselves in the noise?
