October 31, 2014 David Jones Sr.  Sept. 27, 1946 — Oct. 30, 2014

David R. Jones Sr., 68, Bedford, passed away at 12:25 a.m. on Thursday at Indiana University Health, Bedford.

Born Sept. 27, 1946, in Bedford, he was the son of Raymond O. and Lois Jean (Pemberton) Jones. He attended Oolitic High School.

He was a member of the Medora Christian Church. He was a retired truck driver.

Surviving are one son David R. Jones Jr., of Oolitic; brothers and sisters, Helen (Charlie) Hoopingarner of Bedford, Roy D. Jones Sr. (Debra) of Springville, and Janie J. (Dick) Johnson of East Oolitic; one granddaughter, Ashley N. Jones of Oolitic; former wife Debra (Chastain) Davis of Medora, whom he married on April 9, 1969; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Joyce Ann Wade.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Brother Stan Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Leatherwood Cemetery.

Keri R. Smith

Aug. 16, 1970 — Oct. 29, 2014

Keri R. Umphress Smith, 44, of Bedford, died at 2:38 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis following a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 16, 1970, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Wayne Umphress and Deratha “Dee” (McClintock) Smith.

She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her mother, Dee Smith and husband Jerald of Utica, Ky.; her father, Wayne Umphress and wife Mary of Bedford; a daughter, Ceara Smith of Philpot, Ky.; a son, Chance Smith of Utica, Ky.; a granddaughter, Allie Raymer; a brother, Cody Umphress of Bloomington; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Jamie Umphress.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with John Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Spice Valley Cemetery.

Emma Ruth Deckard was born Sept. 24, 1915 to LaVesta (Smith) and Lee Deckard in Monroe County. She went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday at Hospice House in Bloomington. Her family was by her side.

Ruth retired from Indiana University. She was a member of the Hunters Creek Pentecostal Church since 1958.

Ruth married Floyd W. (Jake) Deckard on May 12, 1931. He preceded her in death on July 1, 1978.

Ruth is survived by one sister, Dorotha Hollars of Bloomington; three children, Vernice (Sis) Ritter of Bedford, and Mildred (Melvin) Eads and Kenneth (Marcella) Deckard, both of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Steve (Pam) Ritter of Norman, Philip (Sarah) Ritter of Bedford, Tim Ritter of Nashville, Ruth Ann Daniel, Seth Eads, Ronda (Barry) Gardner, and Lee (Shelly) Deckard, all of Bloomington; 11 great-grandchildren, Brandon (Amanda) Ritter of Brownstown, Brady (Dave) Hall of Norman, Elizabeth Ritter of Bedford, Isaac (Tatiana) Ritter of Springville, Kyle (Melissa) Ritter of Bloomington, Josh (Alison) Daniel of Seymour, Averie (Josh) Hoadley of Heltonville, and Katie (Zack) Burnsworth, Ben Gardner, Emilee Deckard, Anna Deckard, all of Bloomington; nine great-great-grandchildren, Hayden, Sydney and Gabriella Hall, Gweniver Ritter, Reece Daniel, Brogan Cochran, Carter Burnsworth, Hunter Trueblood and Evan Spoonmore.

Ruth was preceded in death by one grandson, Michael Eads; one son-in-law, Otis Ritter; three sisters, Dorothy Hawkins, Mary Ann Stewart and Margaret Begley; and seven brothers, Hebert, Rufford (Luke), Elza, Clovis, Glen, Floyd and Carl Deckard.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Friday at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E Third Street, Bloomington and one hour prior to service on Saturday at the church.

Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hunters Creek Pentecostal Church, 9415 S. Hunter Creek Road, Norman, with Pastor Robert Smith officiating and burial will follow at Allen’s Creek Cemetery.

Roscoe J. Pavey

June 8, 1940 — Oct. 29, 2014

Roscoe James “Jim” Pavey, 74, of Bedford died at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday  at Indiana University Health Bedford.

Born June 8, 1940, in Bedford, he was the son of Roscoe James and Eula (Hardwick) Pavey. He married Elva Walls on Oct. 24, 1969, and she survives.

Survivors include his wife, Elva, of Bedford; two daughters, Jamie Herzner and husband David of Oolitic and Tammy York and husband Billy of Bedford; grandchildren, Debbie Kreuzman and husband Chris, Emily Livingston and husband Forrest, and James and Jeremy York; two brothers, Carl Pavey and Donald Pavey; and a sister, Malinda Adcock.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Heather Rose York; and a brother, Wesley Pavey.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Patton Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Jay Bennett officiating. Burial will follow.

Visitation will be from  noon until 1:30 p.m. on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

James Summers

Oct. 13, 1961 — Oct. 28, 2014

James M. “Jimmy” Summers, 53, of Bedford, went to be with the Lord at 12:02 p.m. on Tuesday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

He was born in Lawrence County on Oct. 13, 1961, to Bill and Mary (Edwards) Summers. Jimmy was a graduate of BNL High School and was self employed.

Jimmy loved to fish with his dad Bill, he was the best brother in the world, and he had a heart of gold. He will be sadly missed by his family, gone but not forgotten.

Surviving are his son, Tanner Summers of Bedford; his mother, Mary Summers of Bedford; two brothers, Lonnie Summers of Bedford and Billy Summers of Fayetteville; two sisters, Connie Harrison of Bedford and Rhea Dawn Summers of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, Bill Summers; grandparents; sister, Donna Kay Summers; and brother-in-law, Ronnie Harrison.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Friday at Cresthaven Funeral Home with Brother Reno Bates officiating. Burial will follow in Fayetteville Community Cemetery.

Robert Freeman

Jan. 25, 1928 — Oct. 28, 2014

Robert C. Freeman, 86, was born Jan. 25, 1928, in Greene County, to Alonzo and Adah Marie (Evans) Freeman. He died Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

He graduated from Smithville High School and attended I.U. He worked at RCA for 10 years and then went into the laundry and dry cleaning business for himself, beginning with Broadview in Bedford. He purchased Sunshine Cleaners in Bloomington from Jack Smith, Economy Laundry and Cleaners from Tom Fulkerson, and Southgate Coin-Op from Mike Demshar. As leases expired, all existing equipment was moved to the Bedford location. That operation had been relocated to the old Triangle/Leahy Building, where it remains to this day, known as Laundry Village. He installed the first coin-op dry cleaning machines in Southern Indiana.

He owned his own plane, a Piper Cherokee 6, up until the time of his death. He was a certified FAA Private Pilot. His love of flying was paramount in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Vestel, James, and Charles; and stepdaughter, Linda Firpi.

He is survived by wife Betty Bower Freeman; son, Robert C. Freeman II; daughter, Lisa Marie Freeman of Chicago, sisters; Joy Perry (Harold), Henrietta Carrell (Gene) of Columbus, Ohio; brother, Junior Freeman; and granddaughter, Crystal Russell.

Services will be at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church on Friday. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m., followed by burial at Valhalla.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society or to the Bloomington Animal Shelter in honor of his beloved cat Whiskers. He was a bone and prostate cancer patient for 14 1/2 years.

Grace “Maurine” Peek Speer, 83, of Bloomington, went home to meet her loving husband, at 1:47 a.m. Sunday at Indiana University Health, Bloomington.

Born April 2, 1931, in Alabama, she was the daughter of George S. Peek and Grace (Bailey) Peek. She married Curtis L. Speer on Dec. 25, 1959; he died on Jan. 25, 2010.

She was a graduate of Pontiac (Mich.) High School and had worked at RCA, Bloomington, before marriage.

She was a member of Hillside Church of Christ, and was a homemaker for 50 years. She enjoyed gardening, especially growing orchids.

Surviving are her son, Roger Speer, and her loving daughter-in-law Sandy Imhausen Speer of Springville, Tenn.; daughter, Rhonda Speer of Bloomington; step grandchildren, Brad Imhausen and Shannon Hitchcock; great-grandchildren, Colton, Baylee and Brenlee Imhausen and Kenley Hitchcock; brother, Cloyd Peek and his children, Andy (wife Pamela) Peek, Jan Deckard, Mindy Peek, and Ramona Peek Hunter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; several aunts and uncles; and one nephew, Tim Peek.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford, with Brother Larry Dalton officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Born July 27, 1962, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Leslie and Margueritte (Taylor) Knight.

She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1980 and was also a graduate of Indiana University.

Eva was a Section Eight Coordinator.

She is survived by: sister, Gayle Terrell of Mitchell; nieces and nephews, Randy Terrell, Laci Terrell, Jonathon Terrell, Amanda Terrell, Tyson Banks, Jerald Leatherman, and Christopher Leatherman; several great-nieces and nephews; special uncles, J.C. Knight and Fred Knight.

Her parents and sisters, Terri Knight and Leslie Chambers, preceded her in death.

Freedona R. “Granny” (Sowders) Scott, 98, Bedford, died Sunday morning at her residence.

She was born April 14, 1916, in Bartlettsville, to Birtle and Letitia (Owens) Sowders. She married Tom Scott on Dec. 30,1933, and he preceded her in death on July 29, 1994, after 61 years of marriage.

She attended a one-room school house in Bartlettsville, then Heltonville School.

She retired from RCA in Bloomington. She was a member of Bartlettsville Christian Church and enjoyed quilting, gardening and reading.

Survivors include one son, Wilson “Joe” (Connie) Scott; three daughters, Rheadawn (Leroy) Young and Wilma Rife of Heltonville, and Jill Tuell of Mitchell; one sister, Mildred (Bill) Acuff of Heltonville; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 25  great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Margaret Harden and Gladys (in infancy); one son, Thomas “Tubb” Scott; three grandchildren, Tommy Dale Scott, and Scotty and Shelly Rife; three brothers, Sylvester, Gerald and Ray Sowders; and one brother in infancy.

Will D. Fortner, 29, of Bedford died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014, at his residence.

Born May 3, 1985, in Elkton, MD, he was the son of William Fortner and Betty (Walker) Arthur. He was the co-owner of the Olde Downtown Tavern and the New World Famous Hideaway Lounge.

Survivors include a son, Peyton Fortner; a daughter, Kyla Fortner; his mother, Betty, of Bedford; two sisters, Patty Allen and husband, Bradley, of Bedford, and Jean Hatcher of Mitchell; three nephews, Tyler Allen and Marcus Allen, both of Bedford, Brayton Hatcher of Mitchell; and a niece, Lexi Hatcher of Mitchell. He was preceded in death by his father, his paternal grandmother, Mary Melendez; an uncle, Kenneth Melendez; an aunt, Anna Melendez and a nephew, Kiven Gillespie.

Paul Emery Flinn, 75, passed away at 8:47 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Born July 11, 1939, in Harrodsburg, he was the son of Opal and Marian (Robinson) Flinn. He married Mary Enochs Sept. 25, 1965.

Paul retired from the Indiana State Highway Department and was a 34-year member of Cornerstone Worship Center. He enjoyed singing in church and watching Indiana University basketball games.

Surviving: wife, Mary Flinn, Mitchell; a son, Adam Flinn, of Bedford; daughters, Gina (Randy) Williams of Mitchell, Paula (Perry) Lagenour of Williams; Cindy (Corey) Housel of Mitchell; 10 grandchildren, Lauren and Aubrey White, Mia and Avery Williams, Matthew and Jonathon Nikirk, Coty and Drew Lagenour, and Coreena and Cade Housel; a brother, Billy Flinn of Mitchell; sisters, Norma Albright of Mitchell, Helen Koontz of Bloomington, Anna (Claude) Long of Spencer, Bonnie Parker of Mitchell and Phyllis (Ronnie) White of Mitchell.

Born March 28, 1940, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Oma Victor and Dorothy Fields.

She married Melvin Nicholson on March 3, 1962; he died Sept. 16, 1995.

She was a member of Dive Christian Church, Bedford, and was a homemaker.

Surviving are four sons, Melvin (Lisa) Nicholson, Jr., Massachusetts; Otis (Michelle) Nicholson, Georgia; Jerry (Deana) Nicholson, Indiana; and Brian Nicholson, Georgia; one daughter, Terri (Terry) Kidd, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Craig Nicholson, Christina Nicholson, Otis Nicholson Jr., Travis Kidd, Devin Nicholson, Hunter Moore, Zander Nicholson and Cody Nicholson; two brothers, Larry Fields and Bill Fields, both of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, in infancy, and one brother, Bob Fields.

Born June 25, 1952, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Elmer and Bessie (Harris) Baker. She married Carl Edward “Ed” Malott.

She retired from Visteon and received a degree from Ivy Tech.

John Andis, 86, of Springville, died at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at his residence.

Born Jan.1, 1928, in Springville, he was the son of Opher and Rosie (McFarland) Andis. He married Phyllis A. Banks on Dec. 29, 1945, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 15, 2013. He retired from Westinghouse and was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Springville Trinity Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Brassine, Shirley Abel and Sherri Shelton and husband, Max, all of Springville; a son, Johnny Andis and wife, Sandy, of Trinity Springs; 13 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Jessie Andis and wife, Ann, of Paoli; three sisters, Mary Lou Thompson of Oolitic, Martha Howard of Paoli and Gladys Blake of Springville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two sons-in-law, Bill Abel and Gary Brassine and three brothers, Curt, Roy and Ray Andis.

Mason lived in Bedford from 1965 to 1972.

He is survived by his wife Loretta and their children, Terry (Jim) Robinson, Carolyn (Bill) Carson, Mike (Jennifer) Mason, Gwen Leahy, Ann (Bob) Davis, Dennis (Beth) Mason, Cindy (Alan) Polatka, Ken (Maxine) Mason, and Brad (Gladys) Mason.

Opal Roberts

March 26, 1930 — Oct. 21, 2014

Opal June “Junie” (Fish) Roberts, 84, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at Johnson Christian Village in Bedford, Indiana.

Born March 26, 1930, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Raymond and Elizabeth (Cummings) Fish. She married George Richard Roberts on March 26, 1949, and he preceded her in death on July 18, 2005. Junie graduated from Shawswick High School and spent the rest of her life doting over her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Known as “Grandma Junie” for the last 40 years, she loved playing cards, cooking (at which she played second fiddle to none), singing Christian music, watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, and fishing. She never saw a referee make a good call against her children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. Born March 17, 1928, in Shawnee, Okla., she was the daughter of Lester H. and Bernice (Byrle) Talley. She married Thurman M. Allen March 28, 1947.

Barbara had been a teacher’s aide at Huron Elementary School and was a member of the Huron Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and sewing.

Surviving are her husband, Thurman Allen, Huron; and a son, Keven Mitchell (Robin) Allen, Huron.

Her parents; son, Stephen Melvin Allen; brother, Bruce William Talley; and sisters, Betty Byrle Casey and Doris Jacklyn Russell, preceded her in death.

Benjamin Edward Cassidy, 71, of Bedford died a 3:36 p.m. on Saturday at the Indiana University Health Hospice House.

Born June 6, 1943, in Lawrence County he was the son of Joseph and Louisa (McDermend) Cassidy. He married Myla Farlee and she survives.

He retired from General Motors and attended the House of Prayer Church.

Survivors include his wife, Myla of Bedford; three sons, Fred Cassidy of Mitchell, Toby Cassidy and wife Tammy of Bedford, and James Cassidy of Bedford; four grandchildren, Zandra Jones and husband Andrew, Brandon Cassidy and wife Ashley, Shane Cassidy, and Jaylyn Cassidy; two great-grandchildren, Chloe and Dakota Cassidy; two sisters, Margaret Brown and husband Richard and Jeanette Nikirk and husband Delvin; and one sister-in-law, Faye Cassidy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Zachery Cassidy; three brothers, James, Carl, and William Cassidy; and three sisters, Catherine Dorsett, Virginia Ray and Mary Joanne Cassidy.

Ralph L. Lee, 56, of Bedford died at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday at Garden Villa.

Ralph L. Lee was born Jan.25, 1958, in Seymour, the son of Charles Daniel and Mary Edith (Bennett) Lee. He lived all of his life in Lawrence County. He attended Tunnelton School until the time of consolidation and graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School in 1976, having never missed a day of school.

Ralph lived his life to the fullest and by the teaching of those who influenced him the most, especially his grandparents, Ebb and Edith Bennett, and his uncles Harold and Lemuel Bennett.

Ralph enjoyed John Deere tractors, freight trains, and jigsaw puzzles and would often be seen outside mowing and cutting brush. He enjoyed working several places including Spring Mill State Park and The Old Buggy Restaurant.

Ralph was a member of the White River Baptist Church in Buddha where he served as an usher.

Ralph is survived by his mother, Mary Edith of Bedford; two brothers, Curtis D. Lee and David L. Lee and wife Paula, all of Bedford; one sister, Martha A. Hill and husband Mark of Medora; nieces and nephews, whom he adored, including Danie Norris and husband Mark of Bloomington, Tiffany Moody and husband Matt of Carmel, Kasey Franklin and husband Doug of Indianapolis, Amanda Herzner and husband TJ of Brownstown, Chelsea Lee and Steve Cassidy of Bedford, Jan Lee of Ohio, Evan Hill and wife Amanda J. of St. Louis, Mo. and Levi Lee and wife Victoria of Bedford; and 14 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles D. Lee; one sister-in-law, Linda Jill Lee; one great-niece, Nora Moody; his maternal and paternal grandparents; as well as several aunts and uncles.

Born Nov. 22, 1925, in Mitchell, Indiana, he was the son of Vernon and Eva (Carroll) Arnold. He married Betty Hammond and she preceded him in death. He was a retired self-employed plumber and a veteran of WWII serving as a Gunner’s Mate Second Class with the U.S. Navy, where he received three bronze stars.

Kathleen Adams Jeffries, aged 86, of Mitchell went to be with the Lord at 6:10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2014 with her husband and children by her side. She was born Dec. 28, 1928 in Ramsey, Illinois to Leo and Hazel Adams.

Kathleen was a devoted Christian and attended Southland Church of Christ where she served as Sunday schoolteacher, in benevolence and in missions for many years. She enjoyed volunteering at Spring Mill Bible Camp in Mitchell for years, as well.

She is beloved wife to her surviving husband of 60 years Willard Jeffries, and loving mother to her three children, Calvin Jeffries, Diana Daggy and Karen Espenant. She is survived by sister Jane Flake, and brother Steve Adams and other family members - grandchildren: Nikolas Jeffries, Vanessa and Carmen Scuito, Nathaniel and Amber Jeffries, Arthur and Sarah Helton, Mary and Danny Curtis, Patrick Brown, Billy and Daniel Daggy, as well as great-grandchildren: Draezen Helton, Kristopher, Lucas and Sean Jeffries, Tristan, Jeffries Adain Jeffries, Courtney, and Tyler Scuito.

Betty L. Hackler, 79, of Bedford went to be with the Lord at 1 p.m. on Thursday at her residence with her children by her side.

Born July 26, 1935, in Orleans, she was the daughter of Howard and Ruth (Lynton) Bell.

Betty attended Orleans High School and worked at the Forge Plant in Mitchell, as a CNA for the Westview Nursing Home in Bedford and in food service at the Bedford Medical Center.

Betty was a devoted Christian and member of New Foundation Church of Bedford, where she had served in the food and clothing pantry helping those in need. Betty had compassion to help those in need and enjoyed building encouraging relationships with all she met.

Although Betty had been severely disabled by crippling rheumatoid arthritis, it did not prevent her from reaching out to others with the same hope and encouragement she had received from her relationship with Christ. She will be lovingly remembered by her family whom she cherished.

Arnold Williamson, of Bedford passed away at 6:39 a.m. on Wednesday at his residence.

Born July 22, 1927, in Bloomington, he was the son of Arnold E. and Frances (Henderson) Williamson. He married Lois Hendrix, and she preceded him in death on May 27, 2012.

 Arnold was a graduate of Bloomington High School and retired as a die maker at General Motors after 42 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a 62-year member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge and a 52-year member of York Rite.

During retirement, Arnold enjoyed fishing, Indiana University basketball, wood working and maintaining his backyard swimming pool. In addition, Arnold and his wife, Lois, hosted an annual pig roast for family and friends at their residence for 25 years.

Survivors include a daughter, Connie Ray (Bill) of Carmel; sons, Mike Williamson of Poway, Calif., and Mark Williamson (Peggy) of Bedford; son-in-law, Dan Cook of Arizona; grandchildren, Michael Conley of Minnesota, Melissa Chouinard (Jason) of Arizona, Jennifer Emmerson (Rob), Brian Ray (Misti), Nathanael Williamson and Brad Ray (Laura), all of Indiana, and Max and Jesse Williamson of California; and 11 great-grandchildren, Preston Conley, Tabatha, Arabella and Sophia Chouinard, Lauren and Audra Emmerson, Jace Tomlinson, Brianna and Porter Ray, Myles and Madelyn Ray.

Mary Ruth (Holaday) Brown, 84, Orleans, died Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born March 28, 1930, in Orleans, she was the daughter of Gloyne Holaday and Hazel Peacher. She married Robert L. Brown on June 19, 1949, and they were married 44 years until his death on Dec. 1, 1993.

She worked as a “Floor Lady” (foreman) with M. Fine & Sons in Bedford for over 15 years, was the morning cook at Arby’s in Mitchell, where customers loved her biscuits and gravy.

She attended Harvest Community Church in Mitchell.

She loved crocheting and made many afghans for her family.

She will be sadly missed.

She and her husband had three children, Ronda (Brad) Thompson of Mitchell, Robert (Teresa) Brown of Orleans, and Renita Brown of Bedford. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Brandon (Vicky) Thompson, Leslie (Chris) Pemberton, Jared (Morgan) Brown, Jessica (Michael) Lantis, Shelly Hopper and David Hopper; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Harvest Community Church (behind White River Co-op). Service will be at noon at the church. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Orleans.

Joseph H. Burton

Joseph Harold Burton, 88, Kiawah Island, S.C., formerly of Mitchell and Bloomington, died Monday in Charleston, S.C., with his wife of 63 years at his side

Joe was born Sept. 6, 1926, in Orleans to J. Kent and Georgia (Carpenter) Burton. Joe lived in Indiana for the first several years of his life before moving to New Jersey and then to Pennsylvania. He graduated from Manheim Township High School near Lancaster, Pa., in 1944, on the way meeting his lifelong best friend, Robert Bush.

After time in the Navy he graduated from Case Institute of Technology, in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1948. Joe worked in New Jersey and New York, meeting Kathryn Sutton in Corning; they married on Feb. 24, 1951. Joe and Kathryn had two children, Lynne (born in 1953) and Brian (born in 1959).

 Joe worked for Westinghouse until he moved back to Lancaster in 1965, where he first worked at Sperry/New Holland and then for RCA. In 1971 he moved to Mitchell, to work as director of purchasing for Carpenter Body Works, the company started by his grandfather. Joe worked at Carpenter until the mid-1980s, when he retired as a vice president.

Joe became Grand Master of Free and Accepted Masons in the state of Indiana in 1987. He and Kay had relocated to Bloomington; they then moved to Kiawah Island, S.C. in 1996, where they spent 18 years together.

Joe loved life — good food, good conversation, and good friends. He was interested in literature and history. He spent many happy hours playing golf, especially with Kay after his retirement; in later years he enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves. He left a mark on all who knew him, and he will be sorely missed.

Besides Kathryn, he is survived by children, Lynne (and husband Tripp Hays) and Brian (and wife Lori); and two grandchildren (Andrew and Joshua).

Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Riverview Memorial Park, Charleston, S.C.

Born Aug. 27, 1937, in Avoca, she was the daughter of Tip Jefferson Mills and Effie Mae (Swafford) Mills. She married Charles William Brown on Nov. 22, 1953; he died Feb. 5, 2006.

She had worked as a Medical Assistant at Bedford Regional Medical Center from 1977 until 1998 and was retired.

Surviving are her daughter, Cheryl (Vernon) Edwards of Bedford; two sons, Charles (Joyce) Brown of Bloomington and Kyle (Amy) Brown of Bedford; nine grandchildren, Tiffany (Matt) Maddox, Chad Brown, Brittany Edwards, Haley Brown, Delvon Wilson, Kyndall Brown, Klayton Brown, Abbey Brown and Brylee Brown; five great-grandchildren, Keaton, Kailee, Braxton, Jasper and Corbin; and several nieces and nephews.

Judith Anne Bliven, 70, of Bedford, died at 1:50 a.m. on Sunday at Indiana University Health Partners, Methodist Campus in Indianapolis.

Born July 17, 1944, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Lowell and Gloria (Waters) Williams. She lived in various cities and states throughout her childhood, primarily Mena, Ark., before settling in Quincy, Ill., with her parents. She married David Bliven and he preceded her in death.

Judy was a homemaker and former employee of Gardner-Denver, Inc. in Quincy.

Judy loved dogs, reading, watching movies and doing word search and crossword puzzles. She was a loving and caring individual who valued her family and friends and was still in close contact with lifelong friends. She donated to many charities and spent a lot of self-reflection time with the Lord.

Survivors include two sons, Amir Saery and wife Jean, of McHenry, Ill., and Timothy Bliven and wife, Jaime, of Bedford; five grandchildren, Austin Courtois, Michael Ball, David Bliven, Elizabeth Saery and Alex Saery; a brother, Douglas K. Williams and wife Beverly, of Bay Minette, Ala.; nieces and nephew, Angela Bryars, Heather Sizemore and Preston Williams.

Gloria Franklin, 66, of Bedford, passed away at 1:55 a.m. on Saturday at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1948, in Michigan to Leo Fowler and Betty (Tinsley) Fowler. She married Kenneth Franklin on Aug. 1, 1970, and he survives.

Gloria taught cosmetology at House of James Beauty School.

Gloria attended Southland Church of Christ in Bedford and Cornerstone Worship Center in Bedford.

Gloria loved her crafts and made all the church costumes and loved helping the children in church and loving her family.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Franklin of Bedford; five daughters, Kelley (Andrew Davidson) Franklin, Kimberly (Devin) McKamey, Amy (Jimmy) Arthur, Jennifer (Ken Gokey) Franklin, all of Bedford, and Paula (Ryan Hall) Franklin of Mitchell; one son, Kenneth Robert Franklin of Bedford; one sister, Pauline (Phil) White of Bedford; 22 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Carl Fowler; one sister, Nancy Fowler; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlynn Hearth.

Memorial service will be at 5 p.m. today at Southland Church of Christ, 2201 26th St. in Bedford, Brother Bud Smith, officiating. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until the service at the church.

Robert Arthur Covey, 83, of Bedford, passed away at 3:40 p.m. on Monday at his residence.

Born July 13, 1931, in Bedford, he was the son of Dell Arthur and Mandy (Meadows) Covey. He married Marjorie Louise Carie; and she preceded him in death in November 1999.

He was a truck driver and an appliance repairman for Scotty’s for many years.

Surviving are his children, David (Dee) Covey of Kempner, Texas, Bobby (Tina) Covey of Bedford and Sherry (Mark) Kopsho of Bedford; grandchildren, Shilo Covey, Daniel Craig, Shane Christian, Amber Craig, Jory Covey, Justin Craig, James Covey, and Joshua Covey; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie; and brothers and sisters, Clinton “Buster” Covey, Vidella (Lindy) Kinser, Hazel Scott, Beulah Hawkins, Helen Kinser, and Lloyd Covey.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Marvin Edward Griffin, 90, of Bedford passed away on Friday at Stone Bridge Health Campus.

Born August 11, 1924, in Clarksville, Ark., he was the son of Tom and Ruby (Harvey) Griffin. He married Betty Rose Allen on Sept. 2, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1987. He then married Carolyn Sue Ryan on June 26, 2001, and she survives.

He served his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.

He retired from Crane Naval Warfare Center and owned Griffin Electrical business.

He was an avid golfer, belonging to Otis Park Men’s Club, attaining the goal of a hole in one three times. He also loved to garden, planting his last garden this spring with the help of the pastor of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church where he is a member.

He was a 50 year member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 and served as grand master of the lodge in 1964. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 33, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Bedford Elks Club.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Sue of Bedford; one daughter,  Leesa Craig and husband Ron of Springville; stepsons, Rob Ryan of Oolitic, Barry Ryan and wife Stephanie and Mark Ryan and wife Dale Lynn, all of Bedford; three granddaughters, Bridget Mackey and husband Blaine of Springville, Aimee Mack and husband Byron of Bedford, and Colleen Rainey and husband Dennis of Mitchell; nine step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; three sisters, Jean Roberts and Dorothy Arnold, both of Bedford, and Edith Parkes of Puxico, Mo.; two brothers, Glen Griffin of Kansas City, Mo. and Carl Lee Griffin of Puxico, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty; one daughter, Judy Johnson; three brothers, James H., Arch and Tommy Griffin; and two sisters, Hazel Griffin and Louise Henson.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Tony Hansen and Ron Craig officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery with military rites accorded by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and D.A.V. Chapter 2.

Visitation will be from 3- 8 p.m.today at the mortuary where a Masonic Service will be at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers are Glenn Griffin, Blaine Mackey, Bryon Mack, Dennis Rainey, Rob Ryan, Barry Ryan and Larry Arnold. Honorary pallbearer is Mark Ryan.

Mary Alice Stevens, 75, of Bedford died at 11:35 p.m. on Friday at her residence.

Born June 17, 1939, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Hovie and Lula (Baker) Kern. She married Robert Stevens on April 21, 1956.

She had worked in housekeeping at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital, retiring after 32 years. She was a member of the 39th Street Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; one daughter, Sheila Silcott and husband Jerry of Bedford; one son, Bruce Stevens of Bedford; four grandchildren, Chris Stevens and wife Carrie, Angela Zumhingst and companion Tony Allen, Tina Jones and husband Aaron, and Brittney Bandy and husband Garrett, all of Bedford; six great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Darrian, Alexis, Rebecca, Heather, and Sueanne; three great-great-grandchildren, Faith, Justice, and Dallas; and one brother, Merle Kern of Versailles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Tina Joy; and several brothers and sisters.

Wilma D. McPherson, 88, Bedford, passed away at 4 p.m. on Friday at Indiana University Health in Bedford.

She was born on Jan. 22, 1926, in Seneca, Kan., to William and Emma (Cody) Gilsdorf. Wilma married Robert H. McPherson on April 27, 1946, in San Diego, Calif. and he preceded her in death on April 1, 2007.

Wilma worked at the Medora Plastic Factory, in housekeeping at Bedford Medical Center; she also worked at the Beta Shoe Factory in Salem, and owned and operated the Salem Café in Salem.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mitchell and the Mitchell Senior Citizens. She was a volunteer Pink Lady at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford. She was very active, and loved to make crafts at White River Lodge and loved to crochet.

Wilma will be missed by her family, she was a kind, loving, caring and giving mother.

Survivors include her children, Nancy McPherson of San Diego, Calif., Connie (Robert) Grubb of Orleans, Barbara (John) Lynn of Bedford, Annette Byrd of Pittsburgh, Pa., Diana (Buzz Cook) Pruett of Bedford, Dr. Jim (Jo) McPherson of Paoli, and William McPherson of Bedford; 25 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and 37 great-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Kenneth Gilsdorf of Kansas, Bryce Gilsdorf of Oklahoma, Joe Gilsdorf of Oklahoma, and Jack Gilsdorf of Missouri, two sisters, Carol Reef of Kansas and Phyllis Miller of Missouri.

Jannice K. Fletcher

May 24, 1952 — Oct. 10, 2014 Jannice Kaye Fletcher, 62, of Bedford, passed away at 7:10 p.m. on Friday at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

She was born on May 24, 1952 in Paducah, Ky., to Ken Emmons and Lorraine (Jarmen) Emmons. She married Larry Kent Fletcher on Sept. 21, 1985, in Las Vegas and he survives.

Jannice had worked as a secretary and a professional chef, she had been the caretaker at Kenray Lake for the last 10 years. She also was an avid collector of fine antiques.

Survivors include her husband of 29 years, Larry Kent Fletcher of Bedford, one son Marshall Fletcher of Bedford, and one brother, Jerry Emmons of New Mexico.

James Edmond Stuart, 85, of Bloomington, passed away Friday, October 10, 2014 at IU Health Hospice House. He was born December 26, 1928, in Monroe County to Ira and Mable (Sexton) Stuart. James worked for Crane Naval Air Force Base in cost analysis. He was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church and was an avid golfer.

James Frances Ingalls, 85, of Bedford, passed away at Garden Villa, Bedford.

Born December 1, 1928, in Bedford, he was the son of William and Lucy M. (Edmonson) Ingalls.

He married Shirley Ann Babb on March 25, 1951, and she survives.

James graduated from Bedford High School in June 1946 and joined the Army in October 1946, where he spent several months in Guadalcanal helping rebuild it following World War II. After his return from the army, he went to Washington Lee in Lexington, Virginia, where he studied law. While he was there he was called back to Bedford to join his father and his brother, Bill, to start the Ingalls Stone Company and preparing sandstone for builders. He also studied and joined real estate. He was a member of Bedford City Plan Commission and on the board of the Presbyterian Church. He was the drummer with the Residue Band. He was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33; Elks 826; Bedford Boat & Sportsman Club; and the Ideal Club.

Those surviving are his wife, Shirley Ann Ingalls, of Bedford; children, daughter, Cynthia Lynn Ingalls Deckard and her husband William A., of Indianapolis, and son Joseph Edwin Ingalls and his wife Lita, of Westfield; grandchildren, James “David” Ingalls, of Bedford, Samuel Joel Deckard and his wife Kellen Ann Marie, of Dallas, Texas, and Jessica Marie Ingalls, of Westfield.

His son James William Ingalls preceded him in death. Also, he was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Lois Ruth Ingalls Zink and her husband Derell Eugene and Lucy Ann Ingalls Hostettler and her husband Admiral Steve Hostettler; and one brother William C. Ingalls and his wife Suzanne.

Jeylyn D. Staggs, 22, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville. Jeylyn’s final act was to give the gift of life through organ donation.

She was born in Bedford, April 7, 1992, the daughter of Johnny Staggs and Diana (Crowe) Bolin. Jeylyn was preceded in death by an aunt, Dana Kershaw; grandfather, Dave Cooper, and great-grandparents, Tom and Polly Cook and Gary Gaiser.

A 2011 graduate of Tell City High School, Jeylyn loved animals and enjoyed camping, swimming, hiking and spending time with her children and her siblings.

Jeylyn is survived by her children, Jeydence and Sareena Risse, Birdseye; mother, Diana Bolin, St. Croix; father, Johnny Staggs (Niki Sowders), Bedford; step-father, Chris B. He had been employed at Roberts Brass and Carpenter Body Works. Mike graduated from Mitchell High School in 1967 and was a member of the Bono United Methodist Church.

Marshall attended the Oolitic High School. He served in the U.S. Army. Marshall retired from MCCSC as a boiler technician. He was a member of the Eastview Church of the Nazarene.

Born Dec. 21, 1919, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Leroy and Hester (Chastain) Cave. She married John W. Stipp on March 24, 1940, and he died Sept. 21, 2012. She was a homemaker and attended the First Christian Church in Bedford.

Survivors include a son, Joe Mark Stipp and wife, Brenda, of Louisville, Ky.; a daughter, Cathy Stipp Forbes of Atlanta, Ga.; a grandson, John Noel Stipp and wife, Beth, of Chicago, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters and a brother.

Born June 27, 1932, in Oakland, Calif., she was the daughter of Milford and Frances (Ecklund) Goodwin.

Eleanor was a retired special education teacher and a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Survivors include her sons, Stanley Chastain of North Carolina, and Vernon J. Chastain of Shoals, and five grandchildren.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Joyce M. Purkhiser, age 84 of Mitchell, passed away on Monday at 10:42 a.m. at Mitchell Manor. She was born on Oct. 27, 1929 in Martin County to Joshua and Mary E. (Smith) Davis. She was a graduate of Shoals High School. She married James Purkhiser and he preceded her in death. She had worked at AO Smith in Paoli and retired from RCA in Bloomington.

Surviving are one daughter, Connie Lindsey and husband Stanley of Mitchell; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Robert Lee Purkhiser; one brother, Donald L. Davis; and two sisters, Fern E. Keller and Lois A. Steffe.

Joyce loved to square dance and cook; she belonged to the Spring Mill Squares.

Mr. Ray “Gene” Lessig, 91, of Campbellsburg, passed away Saturday peacefully at his home.

Mr. Lessig was born May 25, 1923, in Washington County, Ind., the son of Ray and Edna Trinkle Lessig.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Christina Bennett Lessig on Aug. 17, 1999; a son, James Lessig on April 3, 2010, two brothers, Steve Lessig and Donald Lessig, and a sister, Emogene Brown.

He is survived by a daughter, Sherry (Frankie) Hamilton of Salem; a sister, Ethelene Wilcoxenson of Mitchell; four grandchildren, Talleaha (Kent) Melvin, Butch Lessig and Chad Lessig, all of Bedford, and Bryce (Jenny) Hamilton of Sellersburg, and seven great-grandchildren.

Mr. Lessig was a retired worker of Mitchell and Stark Construction and he had more than 50 years of membership in the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of Mount Carmel Christian Church.

David A. Chastain, 31, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday at his residence.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1982, in Bedford to Jeff and Taryn (Tarr) Chastain.

He was a graduate of BNL High School in 2001; he married Amber Kern on July 22, 2005 in Bloomington, and she survives.

David was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving from 2001-2007, and was a senior engineering technician at SAIC in Bedford.

Jackie L. Turner, 84, of Bedford, died at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born June 29, 1930, in Bedford, he was the son of Fred and Bessie Turner. He married Delores L. Young on Sept. 26, 1969, and she survives.

He was a professional basketball player for the New York Knicks. He had worked as an Industrial Engineer for Corttron in Orleans and was a past director for the Bedford Parks Department. He retired from LARC.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion, N.B.A. Retired Players Assoc. and a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include his wife, Lorry, of Bedford; a brother, Bill Turner of Russell, Ky.; a niece, Donna Barber of Russell, Ky.; his stepmother, Laverne Turner of Tavares, Fla.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by members of the Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and D.A.V. Chapter 2.

Douglas “Doug” B. Mapes, age 59, of Bedford, passed away at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at IU Health Bedford. He was born in Lawrence County on April 30, 1955, to Bill and Rhea Dawn (Anderson) Mapes. Doug was a graduate of the Bedford High School Class of 1973 and was a retired truck driver. He married Julie Ann (Jones) Davis on Feb. 14, 2003, in Bedford, and she survives.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Mapes of Bedford; his father, Bill Mapes of Bedford; two children, Alecia Perry of Bedford and Andrew Girdley of Bedford; brother, Scott (Mary) Mapes of Orleans; three grandsons, Braden Perry, Levi Perry and Riley Girdley all of Bedford, (he loved them so very much and they kept him going); uncle, Dean Anderson of Bedford; uncle, Jack (Hazel) Mapes of Kokomo; nephew, Jason Floyd of Orleans; cousins, Libby Wilcox of Bedford, Rickie Dean Anderson of Gosport, Cindy Mapes of Kokomo, John Mapes of Kokomo and Jeff Mapes of Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Special thanks to Ray Carter and Tony Galloway for all of their help and caring.

Doug loved the outdoors and life in general; he fought his battle with cancer for six years and was such a trooper, never complained. He loved his two schnauzers.

Shirley was a homemaker and a graduate of Orleans High School.

James “Jimbo” Bruce, 99, of Evansville went home to be with the Lord at 4 p.m. Thursday at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center, Newburgh.

James was born June 11, 1915, in Chicago, Ill., later moved to Bedford, where he graduated from Bedford High School receiving “All State” recognition in basketball and track.

He started with Indiana Bell in Bedford right after high school and later was transferred to Evansville in 1938. He retired from Indiana Bell in 1977 with 42 years of service.

Jim enlisted in the United States Marines from Evansville in 1945 to serve in WW II. He met President Roosevelt “FDR” after Jim was assigned to set up a land telephone for the President. He was wounded on Iwo Jima. After his medical discharge, he returned to Evansville and later rejoined Bell Telephone. Jim was the oldest living World War II Veteran in Indiana.

He was a member of the Order of the Purple Heart, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled Veterans, Knights of Columbus, Order of Kentucky Colonels, Telephone Pioneers, Eagles and the Marine Corp League, River City Detachment. He was a life-time member of Nativity Catholic Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Rose (Fahrer) Bruce of Evansville; daughters, Pat Buttry of Boonville and Pam Richter (Ken) of Evansville; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Katherine (Raley) Bruce; brother, Jack Bruce; and sister, Betty Streich.

Mass of a Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nativity Catholic Church, 3635 Pollack Ave. Evansville. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Evansville, with full military rites.

Born July 14, 1937, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Othel and Phyllis (Brown) Caraway. He was previously married to Betty Sons and she preceded him in death. His second marriage was to Andrea Yvonne Todd on July 7, 1979.

He retired from Contech Construction Products and was a U. S. Air Force veteran.

Surviving is his wife, Andrea Caraway of Bedford; daughter, Jamie (Josh) Dotts of Mitchell; son, Mike Caraway of Bedford; grandchildren, Robby Caraway, Mark Caraway, Noah Dotts, Jay Dotts, Jamison Dotts and Daison Dotts; brothers, Vincent (Sue) Caraway of Kansas, and Steve (Darlene) Caraway, Charlie (Ann) Caraway and Danny (Jenny) Scott, all of Bedford.

His parents and first wife preceded him in death.

James Farrell, 86, of Bedford died at 2:50 a.m. on Wednesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Sept. 9, 1928, in Bedford, he was the son of John Joseph and Bertha (Drake) Farrell Sr. He married Mary J. Stephens on June 3, 1978, and she passed away on Dec. 7, 2005.

He was retired as a construction inspector for Crane after 22 years.

James was a graduate of Bedford High School, Class of 1946. He served as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army, a member of the Mitchell American Legion Post No. 250 and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Surviving are one brother, Michael (Pat) Farrell; four sisters, Elizabeth “Betty” Bullock, Mary Jo (Ralph) Cannedy, Kathleen “Kitty” (George) Zink and Sheila (Dick) Brown; three stepdaughters, Vicki Lawson, Kelly Rudd and Cindy Endris; along with several nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one brother Jack.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford, with Fr. Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will be in Crest haven Memory Gardens.

Michael C. Elliott, 62, Bedford, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospice House.

Born May 26, 1952, in Bedford, he was the son of Jack and Leona (Reynolds) Elliott. He married Marcella Jo Russell Sept. 29, 1979.

He was a graduate of Bedford High School, Class of 1973. Mike retired from Naval Weapons Support Center-Crane Division. Following retirement he worked various jobs, most recently for Lawrence County Solid Waste.

Mike had many friends, a great sense of humor and a love for life. His strong faith helped him overcome many obstacles throughout his life. He was an avid NASCAR fan.

Surviving are his wife of 35 years, Marcella Jo Elliott of Bedford; treasured dog, “Baby Girl;” sisters, Wanda (Stephen) Sanders and Sandra (Tom) Bishop, all of Bedford; and nephews, Phil (Lydia) Sanders, Chris Sanders, Roger Bishop and Brad Bishop.

His parents preceded him in death.

Cremation was chosen and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Born Oct. 18, 1928, in Bedford, he was the son of Homer and Bessie M. (Stigall) Pace. He married Naomi Stafford on Jan. 13, 1951, and she survives.

He was a retired stone mason and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Mitchell.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi of Bedford; two daughters, Sharon Taylor and husband Larry of Orleans and Vickie Kemple of Bedford; three sons, Jesse D. Pace of Monroe City, Bruce Pace of Leesville and John Pace and wife Sue of Longview, Minn.; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Frona Taylor and husband Herman of Bedford; several nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Roger Siedl and a sister-in-law, Donna Pace, both of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Darrell Lee (in infancy); a sister, Margaret Siedl and two brothers, Leo (Shorty) Pace and Charles Pace.

Dan Dalton, 89, of Bedford, died Sunday at his residence.

Born April 25, 1925, he was the son of William Dalton and Nanna Lou (Ritchison) Owens. He married Beverly Concannon and she preceded him in death.

He retired from the Bedford Fire Department and was a driver for Schwerman Trucking. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II. He was a member of N.R.A. and Teamsters Union Local 135.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Corwin and husband Rick of Bedford, Leanne Eisele and husband Jack of Orleans and Karen Dalton and fiancé Mike of Oregon; four stepchildren, Catherine Concannon and Laura Stroud and husband Scott, all of Bedford, James Concannon and wife Gia of Florida and Christian Black and husband Mitchell of Franklin; and a sister, Kathleen East.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beverly; a son, Danny Dalton; and two brothers, Wayne and Clarence Dalton.

At Dan’s request, cremation was chosen. No services are planned. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Patsy P. Gilliland, 79, of Bedford, died at 7:20 a.m. on Monday at the home of her granddaughter in Orleans.

Born July 19, 1935, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Charlie and Mary (Asdell) Tincher. She married Jesse P. Gilliland on Dec. 31, 1952, and he preceded her in death on May 24, 2004.

She was an assembly worker at Visteon and a member of the Eagles Lodge and I.U.E. Union.

Survivors include two daughters, Susie York and Mary P. Paul and husband Jeff, all of Bedford; a son, Jesse D. “Bubba” Gilliland and wife Mary Lou of Bedford; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Charles Tincher Jr. and wife Edith and Sam Tincher and wife Dorothy, all of Bedford; and two sisters, Mary Ethel Turpin of Owensburg and Sue Harris of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, David Gilliland; two sisters, Sara Cox and Joan Cassidy; and two brothers, Bill and Eugene Tincher.

Born Jan. 3, 1934, she was the daughter of Everett and Lula (Swigler) Turpin. She married Ford Junior Terrill on April 16, 1949, and he preceded her in death on May 14, 1997.

She was an assembler for Sarkes-Tarzian in Bloomington.

Hollingsworth and wife Julie and Mike Hollingsworth, all of Bloomington, Chris Hollingsworth and wife Shonna of Lawrenceville, Ill., Melissa, Jared and Amanda Crane, all of Ellettsville, Lorena Terrill of Bedford, Jeremy Terrill of Heltonville, Jason Harrell of Ohio and Kristy Bex of Bedford; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Johnson of Heltonville and Barbara Hauser of Pennsylvania; a brother, Jess Turpin; a brother-in-law, Joe Johnson of Heltonville; and several nieces and nephews.
