November 30, 2012 Norman Taylor Oct. 28, 1953 — Nov. 28, 2012 Norman “Norm” Taylor, 59, of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital. Born Oct. 28, 1953, in Bedford, he was the son of Austin O. and Juanita (Doane) Taylor. He married Annette G. Cottey on July 8, 1995 and she survives. He was a counselor with the North Lawrence Career Center. He loved history and was most recognized as founder and chief promoter of the Lawrence County History Festival and Pow Wow. Norm, who has Cherokee lineage on his father’s side, also had a passion for the Great Depression and World War II. His favorite president was Franklin D. Roosevelt. He spent about 25 years as a Civil War re-enactor and visited many of the Civil War Battlefields. He was a member of the 27th Indiana Civil War Re-enactors and 13th Mississippi Civil War Re-enactors. For the last two years, Norm and Annette organized the Civil War Days at Spring Mill State Park. Norm was determined to do his part to preserve local and national heritage and shared his passion of history on the airwaves with “Lawrence County Oral History,” which later became known as “Indiana History Project.” The shows air on AT&TU-verse on Channel 99 and Comcast Channel 14. Because of his accomplishments, Taylor was bestowed the 2011 Frank and Judy O’Bannon Heritage Enrichment Award. Survivors include his wife, Annette, of Bedford; three daughters, Katresha Taylor of Fishers, Kelly (Huntzinger) Nicol and husband Kyle of Mitchell and Ashley (Huntzinger) Hilkey and husband Dustin of Bedford; a son, Kyle Huntzinger of Spencer; three grandchildren, Mia and Brynna Nicol and Aiden Pridemore; his mother, Juanita Taylor and Gordon Henderson and family, Jane and Steve Boshears, Mary and Mike Miller, Doris and Monty Todd, Jim and Nikii Henderson all of Bedford, and Thom and Betty Henderson of Orleans; a sister, Austina Marshall and husband Bill of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Kenneth Sullivan officiating. Scott May 31, 1935 — Nov. 18, 2012 Gerald D. “Jerry” Scott, LCDR USN (Ret.), 77, was born in Bedford, on May 31, 1935, and died peacefully at home in Chula Vista, Calif., on Nov. 18, related to complications of COPD. Jerry’s childhood necessitated that he work from a very young age. His first job at eight years old was shining shoes in a pool hall. He was also a gas station attendant, laid railroad ties, and was a high-rise iron worker. On his 17th birthday he enlisted in the Navy and served four years. He then returned to Indiana and married his sweetheart Carlene J. Jackson. In 1961, while married, raising a family, and working nights in a stone quarry, he earned a B.S. from Indiana University. He often reminisced, and was forever grateful to his co-workers who encouraged him to pursue a higher education. He fondly remembered times when his buddies would offer to take his turn on the line offloading heavy pieces of stone to enable him to study for an upcoming exam. After graduating from Indiana University, Jerry re-enlisted into the Navy and was sent to Officers Candidate School in Newport R.I. His first assignment was as a weapons officer aboard The USS John R. Perry (DE 1034) which participated in the blockade of Cuba during The Cuban Missile Crisis. The subsequent years were also spent primarily at sea which necessitated many cross country relocations for his wife and four young children. Jerry’s career in the Navy included three tours in Vietnam, and two mine sweeper commands. He received numerous commendations, including two Bronze Stars with Combat V for valor in combat. Jerry rarely spoke of his time in the military, except to reflect on the friendships he had cultivated. He had recently reconnected with some of his crew from his last command, The USS Energy (MSO 436) and was honored to attend their yearly reunions. Jerry possessed a keen mind and a tireless work ethic. After serving 20 years in the Navy, he established and operated various successful businesses including, “Scott’s Porsche Parts,” “The Kit Kat Cocktail Lounge,” and “G. Scott Asphalt.” He was active in his community and was a familiar face at Chula Vista City Hall and at City Council meetings. He was recently honored posthumously by the Mayor for his civic involvement. Retiring from asphalt contracting in 1998, allowed Jerry free time to pursue his various interests. He designed and built a Class 10 off-road vehicle and participated in SCORE racing for many years. His racing team won many events over the years in The United States and in Mexico. He also enjoyed motor home travel and made several trips back to Indiana to visit friends and attend his high school reunions. He was an avid college basketball fan and never missed watching a Hoosier basketball game. A proud grandparent, he reveled in all of his grandchildren’s various activities and accomplishments. Jerry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carlene; son, Carl Scott (Laura); daughters, Kimberly Duran (Rick), Venoa Scott, and Sherri Vasquez (Tadeo); grandchildren, Catherine Duran, Sarah Scott, Rachel Scott, Estevan Vasquez, Amelia Vasquez and Samuel Vasquez, and one great-granddaughter, Jennifer Duran. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 6 at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, San Diego, Calif. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society or San Diego Hospice. Arrangements are pending at the Day & Carter Mortuary. November 28, 2012 George T. Chastain April 1, 1924 — Nov. 27, 2012 George T. Chastain, 88, Orleans (Leipsic Community), passed away at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at his residence. Born April 1, 1924, in Orange County, he was the son of Lawrence William and Bertha Jane (Taylor) Chastain. He married Luella E. Crane Nov. 25, 1948, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 2009. George was owner of Chastain’s TV Sales and Service and had been in business 60 years. He was a member of Leipsic United Methodist Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are his children, Brenda Sue (Jeff) Shepple of Greenwood, Barry Lee Chastain of Leipsic and Roger Wayne (Tonya) Chastain of Mitchell; grandsons, Andrew, Ben, Nathan, and Daniel Shepple; and one great-grandson. His parents; wife; and sister, Velma Louise Chastain, preceded him in death. Cook May 8, 1949 — Nov. 28, 2012 Lovie R. Cook, 63, of Bedford, died at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday at her residence. Born May 8, 1949, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Raymond and Mary (Baldwin) Tincher. She married Harry Cook on Sept. 17, 1966, and he survives. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Harry, of Bedford; two daughters, Judy Ann Banks and husband Tim of Buddha and Beverly Sue Wade and husband Gary of Williams; two sons, James Earl Cook and Bobby Cook and wife Carrie, all of Bedford; five grandsons, Bryan Banks of South Carolina, Nathaniel and Zachariah Banks of Buddha, Stephen Davis of California and Jayden Cook of Bedford; a granddaughter, Brittany Davis of Williams; and two brothers, Jim Tincher and wife Diane of Shoals and Donnie Tincher and wife Ivy of Mitchell. Chris Conolty June 5, 1963 — Nov. 27, 2012 Chris A. Conolty, 49, of Bedford, died at 3:50 p.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital. Born June 5, 1963, in Bedford, he was the son of Larry W. and Wanda S. (Ray) Conolty. He was a carpenter and enjoyed golfing and fishing. Survivors include his parents; a son, Derek Sommer; a grandson; three brothers, Kenny Bundy and wife Alison, Brad Bundy and companion Shiela, and Troy Conolty and wife Kelly; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his companion of 16 years, Terry Grey; and several aunts and uncles. Mary Inez Speer Aug. 21, 1923 — Nov. 27, 2012 Mary Inez Speer, 89, of Norman, died at 1:35 a.m. on Tuesday at Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown. Born August 21, 1923, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Hugh M. and Josie (Baker) Morrison. She married Wilburn Paul Speer on May 3, 1940, in Lawrence County; and he preceded her in death on April 16, 1996. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Wrays Christian Church in Jackson County, and attended the Norman Christian Church. Surviving are one son, Ronald E. (Diane) Speer of Leesville; one daughter, Carolyn A. (Jerry) Hall of Norman; six grandchildren, Jeff Speer, Jason Speer, Jerod Speer, Mike Hall, Kim Fredenburg and Valerie Marcett; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Charles Morrison and Harrell Morrison, both of Norman; and two sisters, Nora Rousch, and Minnie Duncan, both of Norman. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers; one sister; and one half-sister. November 27, 2012 Iva Lee Bianchi July 4, 1927 — Nov. 15, 2012 Iva Lee Bianchi, 85, of Bedford, died on Nov. 15 at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, Calif. Born in Cedar Hill, Ky., she was the daughter of Denny and Vercie (Dalton) Hammond. She married Sylvio John Bianchi on Sept. 10, 1949. She retired from IBM in the early 80’s. Surviving are her daughter, Deborah Fike; son, Syl Bianchi and grandson Joshua Bianchi, all of California; four brothers, Robert Hammond of Bedford, Clifford Hammond and Ronald Hammond, both of Columbus, Ohio, and Delno Hammond of Belleview, Ohio; four sisters, Nellie New and Elizabeth Jo Powels, both of Monticello, Ky., Raylah Hammond of Winnetka, Calif., and Wanda Fese of Mesa, Ariz.; sisters- and brothers-in–law; nieces, nephews, good friends; and compadre. She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers; and two sisters. She came from a large family, very close and unique they all were. On Aug. 21, 2012, she had moved to California, to live with her daughter and be near her son and grandson. Mom will be missed for her “Great Cooking,” but most of all she will be missed for how she made you feel “Welcome” in her home. She was happy doing and giving, always making the other person who ever they were, feel important. She didn’t ask for herself but found “Great Pleasure” in giving to others. She was truly “A Classy Lady.” Mom would say, “I have my eye on the prize and the prize is God.” She will be returning to her hometown of Bedford, where she will be laid to rest. There will be a celebration of her life during the summer of 2013. Kay Fulks June 3, 1917 — Nov. 25, 2012 Kay Fulks, 95, Bedford, died Sunday with her family by her side at StoneBridge Assisted Living. She was born June 3, 1917, in Louisville, Ky. She was a photographer, active in the Thoroughbred Chorus Auxiliary, Bedford Exchange Club, and Club 55 bowling leagues. She loved playing games with family. She was preceded in death by husband of 56 years, James; three brothers and two sisters. She is survived by her son, Jim, Jr. (Ann), of Louisville, Ky.; and daughter, Pat (Randy) Hutchinson, of Bedford. She is also survived by two sisters, Ruth Wagner and Ellen (Bruce) Kinloch, six grandchildren (including Roxi Baum of Bedford), and 16 great-grandchildren. Mary Jewell Waldon Dec. 21, 1929 — Nov. 24, 2012 Mary Jewell Waldon, 82, of Brownsburg, formerly of Bedford, died at 2:40 p.m. on Saturday at Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation Center — Eagle Creek in Marion County. Born Dec. 21, 1929 in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Laban and Vannie (Colvin) Roberts. She worked at M. Fine & Sons. Survivors include a son, Jerry England of Brownsburg; three half-brothers, Johnny Roberts, Roy Roberts and Bobby Roberts, all of Arizona; a half-sister, Mabel Day of Bedford; two grandchildren, Carrie England of Speedway and Jeremy England of Brownsburg; four great-grandchildren, Avery, Maxwell and Amelia England, and Amaya Vaughn; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mae Stailey; and a brother, Kenneth Roberts. Dorothy T. Davis Jan. 11, 1932 — Nov. 25, 2012 Dorothy T. Davis, 80, of Orleans, died Sunday at the Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation in Bedford. She was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Urbana, Ohio, the daughter of Benjamin and Carrie Smucker McAlexander. She married Robert E. Davis on Nov. 4, 1950, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1992. She was a housewife and a member of the Orleans Eastern Star. She is survived by her three sons, Richard R. (Phyliis) Davis of Paoli, Mark L. Davis of Orleans and Andrew G. (Rachel) Davis of Orleans; one daughter, Betty (Bob) Euhl of Bedford; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Donald McAlexander of Rosewood, Ohio; and one sister, Virginia Stoker of Sidney, Ohio. November 26, 2012 Oweetah Prince Oct. 28, 1927 — Nov. 24, 2012 Oweetah Prince, 85, Bedford, passed away peacefully Saturday at Bloomington Hospital. Born Oct. 28, 1927, she was the daughter of the Rev. Morton Thomas and Gertrude (Hillenburg) Thomas of Heltonville. She married James W. Prince in 1943. They had three children, Caroline “Carolyn,” James Ronald “Ronnie” and Cindy Jo. Oweetah and James divorced in 1967. No other children were born to either parent in their lifetime. James passed away Jan. 19, 2009. She was a homemaker and was employed at RCA for approximately 10 years and worked as a nurse’s assistant at Bedford Hospital and Bloomington Hospitality House. She and James were members of the Bloomington Aces Motorcycle Club in the 1950’s. Oweetah enjoyed writing poetry, embroidery and was a lover of all animals, especially her cats. She enjoyed her family and talking on the phone to her close friends. Surviving are two daughters, Caroline “Carolyn” Prince and Cindy Jo (Prince) Stewart, both of Bedford; four grandchildren, Richard J. Thorton II of Louisville, Ky., Melissa J. November 25, 2012 Joanna Fay Barnett June 3, 1920 — Nov. 23, 2012 Joanna Fay Barnett, 92, of Bedford, died at 11:19 p.m. on Friday, November 23, 2012, at Williamsburg Health Care in Crawfordsville, IN. Born June 3, 1920, in Lawrence Co., she was the daughter of Hartwell Harold and Florence Bethel (Lovell) Fultz. She married George Elza Barnett on December 20, 1939, and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and member of the Gillen Post #33 American Legion Auxiliary. She attended Erie Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Terry Barnett of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Monty Kay Barnett and wife, Janni, of Crawfordsville; 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Morgan of Indianapolis; a sister-in-law, Helen Spires of Bedford; and her close friend and caregiver, Debbie Neeley. Fountaine, 95, of Bedford, died at 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford. Born September 7, 1917 in Elkhorn, Wisconsin, he was the son of Charles and Catherine (White) Fountaine. He married Ruth S. Humphrey on November 13, 1943; and she passed away January 30, 2009. He was a graduate of the University Of Wisconsin Medical School. He was a medical doctor in Lawrence County starting in 1949 until his retirement. He also served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bedford, was a member of the American Medical Association and a member of the Lawrence County Medical Society. Surviving are one son, Thomas J. Fountaine II and his wife Tamra of Sate College Pennsylvania; three daughters, Dianne Bellush and husband James of Bedford; Rev. Suzanne Fountaine of Cincinnati, Ohio; Cynthia Scudder and husband Paul of Carbondale, Illinois; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; He was preceded in death by his wife, 1 brother, Forrest Charles Fountaine; 2 sisters, Vivian Dickerson and Winifred Fountaine. Born November 17, 1918, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of George and Roxie (Edwards) Blackwell. She married Charles Robertson May 16, 1936, and he preceded her in death in 1975. Her second marriage was to Dewey Mongold in November of 1979 and he preceded her in death January 28, 1986. Virginia was a homemaker and a member of Spice Valley Baptist Church. Surviving: a son, Kenneth E. She married Asa A. Terry March 22, 1945. She had been employed as bookkeeper at Mitchell Motor Sales. Juanita was a member and organist at Spice Valley Baptist Church, and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1944. Surviving: husband, Asa A. Born June 7, 1920 in Monroe County, she was the daughter of Edward and Edna (McNeely) Crum. Forrest was a housekeeper at Eigenmann Hall Dormitory for several years. She was a member of the Lake Monroe Church of Christ. She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking and playing her guitar. She played lead guitar for a band named The Varieties. She married Lewis M. Petrie in Westport on January 7, 1951 and he preceded her in death on June 1, 1991. She died in Bedford surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 15, 1925 in Lawrence County, the daughter of Floren and Katie Clouse Connell. She married Robert W. Lindley on September 20, 1947 in Bloomington, with Rev. Orville Frame officiating and her attendants were her sister Maxine Smith Miller and brother-in-law, Robert Eugene Smith. In her younger years she worked at Reliance in Mitchell. Although she spent most of her life as a homemaker, she did work in several restaurants and a grocery store. She belonged to the Woodville Baptist Church in Mitchell. Thelma’s life was centered around her family and friends. She had many names: Pearl, as Dad used to call her, Mom, Grandma, Granny, Mamaw Bob, Sis and friend. She was a good hard-working, loving and caring woman. She was a good wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She will be missed by all, but not forgotten. We will always carry her in our hearts, for you only have one mother in your lifetime. He went on to serve as president and CEO of Radius Indiana. R.J. served on numerous state and community boards including Executive member of Japan American Society, Executive member of Evansville Chamber of Commerce, BOD and member of Vincennes University (appointed by Governor Daniels) and, most recently, on the Executive Committee of the I-69 Innovation Corridor. Miller, 76, of Oolitic, died peacefully at his home at 3:25 p.m. on Thursday with his family. Born Sept. 19, 1936, in Bloomington, he was the son of Leonard F. and Nellie (Rogers) Miller. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Curt and Melissa (Rogers) Covey after the death of his mother in 1937. He married Carole Jenkins on July 19, 1957, at the Free Methodist Church in Bedford. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War and was a member of Gillen Post #33 American Legion. He owned and operated Miller’s Sunoco and Miller’s Auto Sales at 5th and Lincoln in Bedford. After returning from the Army in 1956, he started racing jalopy-type cars for his uncle at local tracks in Bloomington and Mitchell. Most of the cars were anything from a ’32 Ford to a ’44 Ford, and all were coupes. He then went on to build his own cars with his father-in-law, a ’49 Ford with a Hudson engine. Later they built a ’32 Chevy. After that, he started racing a Ford super modified. In 1964 he started racing super modified sprint cars in which he drove until 1977 winning many track championships. He dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving him are his wife, Carole Miller of Oolitic; daughters, Debbie Elkins and husband Mike of Houston, Texas and Sheryl Quintana of Bedford; sons, Keith Miller and wife Kim of Baytown, Texas and Greg Miller of Bedford; seven grandchildren, Lori Miller Emmons (Michael), Daniel Quintana, Melissa Quintana, Jessica Miller, Jennifer Miller, Rebecca Miller and Haley Miller; four great-grandchildren, Cody and Ellie Emmons, Andrea Miller and Hunter Coyle; one sister, Thelma Rice (Mel); and many nieces and nephews. He loved playing piano with various local bands, playing cards and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was enlisted in the United States Navy for a short time, but received an honorable discharge due to medical reasons. He was previously a member of the Englewood Baptist Church, where he sang in the church choir and served as a deacon. On Oct. 16, 1998, on the 50th anniversary of WBIW Radio Station, Leonard, at the age of 73, was recognized as having helped organize, and sang with the Radio Farm Boys, a WBIW country music group. He also played the mandolin and had played back-up with the Little Jimmy Dickens Band at Little Nashville Opry. Born June 27, 1990, in Bloomington, he was the son of Garry Holmes and Jan (Root) Nelson. He was a press operator at Stone City Products in Bedford. Devon loved playing guitar and being with his friends and family. Devon’s mischief knew no bounds and the enjoyment that he created drew that beautiful smile and lit up those big blue eyes. Survivors include his father, Garry Holmes of Springville; his mother, Jan Nelson of Bedford; three brothers, Michael Chase Briscoe of Bedford, Ricky Holmes and wife Robin of Springville, and Eric Holmes and wife Cheri of Heltonville: paternal grandfather, Keith Holmes of Springville; maternal grandfather, Morris Root of Bedford; two uncles, Jeff Root and wife Kelly and Darren Root and wife Michelle; aunt, Michelle Chastain and husband Shane; cousins, Jordan, Hannah, Kinzey, Andrew, Alex Root, Merideth Root, Corey, Adam and Molly Chastain; and nieces and nephews, Tyler, Cruz, Ciara and Celina Holmes. Devon was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Janice Holmes and maternal grandmother, Joanne Root Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Friday at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will follow in Lowder Cemetery in Springville. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until the service at 3 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
