March 31, 2017 Elizabeth A ‘Annie’ (Cleveland) Lee Oct. 30, 1941 — March 29, 2017 Elizabeth “Annie” Lee, 75, of Bedford passed away on March 29, 2017, at 12:30 a.m. at Golden Living Center in Bloomington. She was born in Anderson on Oct. 30, 1941, to Standley Cleveland and Juanita (Walton) Cleveland-Roach. Annie married Larry G. Lee on May 18, 1986, and he preceded her in death on July 27, 2008. She was a homemaker and attended Burgoon Baptist Church. She was a graduate of Smithville High School. Survivors include her daughter, Kellie Phillips of Oolitic; two grandchildren, Justin Kenny and Jessica Kenny, both of Bedford; two great-grandchildren, Clayton and Jayden of Bedford; a brother, Dave Cleveland; a sister, Janet Cleveland, and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Cleveland, all of Bedford. March 30, 2017 Stephen ‘Steve’ Nicholson June 1, 1950 — March 28, 2017 Stephen “Steve” Nicholson, 66, of Bedford, died at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at IU Health Bedford Hospital. Born June 1, 1950, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Ambrose David Nicholson and Anna M. (Boone) Nicholson. He married Vivian Tirey on Sept. 25, 1970, and she survives. He was a graduate of Heltonville High School with the Class of 1969 and had attended Vincennes University, Vincennes; he was retired from G.E., Bloomington after 37 years; he worked as a phlebotomist at Dunn Memorial Hospital, Bedford, substitute taught for North Lawrence Schools, and most recently worked in a group home in Bedford. He was a lover of horses and had helped run the state 4-H horse-pony competition and was Lawrence County 4-H horse and pony leader for many years; he had judged horses all over the U.S. and Canada, holding many horse breed cards. Also, he was scheduled to judge a national European Horse Show in Belgium later this summer. He was of the Methodist Faith. Survivors include his wife, Vivian, Bedford; one son, Eric (Sally) Nicholson, Bedford; three grandchildren, Chandler, Tate and Katie Nicholson; his father-in-law Wayne Tirey, Bedford; four brothers, John “Bucky” Nicholson, David “Bud” (Linda) Nicholson, Randy (Beth) Nicholson and Stanley “Buster” (Mattie) Nicholson; seven sisters, Paula (Warren) Bartlett, Luanne Robbins, Donna (Bill) Bilbrey, Becky (Jim) Hicks, Vickie (Butch) Stidam, Beth Wubben, and Gina (Dean) Smith; sister-law Toni (Don) Hardesty; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Adrian Nicholson, one brother, Kenneth “Butch” Nicholson, one sister, Judy Todd, mother-in-law, Charlotte Tirey and brother-in-law, Jim Wubben. Harriet Ann (McQueen) McCart Dec. 31, 1929 — March 29, 2017 Harriet Ann McCart, 87, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford. Born December 31, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Harry McQueen. She married Norman Wayne McCart April 8, 1950, and he preceded her in death February 28, 2010. Harriet had been a medical assistant for Dr. Waldo and Dr. M. H. Girgis at Bedford Regional Medical Center, and was co-owner of the Betty Shop in Orleans. She graduated from Huron High School in 1948, and had been employed several years at Spring Mill State Park. Harriet was a member of the Huron Church of God and the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed decorating, reading, entertaining, and her family. Survivors include her son, Danny (Linn) McCart of Omaha, Nebraska, and granddaughters, Natalie and Emily. Her father; husband; and son, Richard “Ric” McCart; preceded her in death. Born Oct. 25, 1975, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Rob and Trena (Burks) Arthur. She married Terry Caraway on Aug. 6, 2009, and he survives. She was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School and had attended Crossroads Community Church. William Douglas ‘Doug’ Kendall Dec. 9, 1962 — March 27, 2017 William Douglas (Doug) Kendall, 54, of Oolitic, died at 2:44 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford. Born Dec. 9, 1962, in Bedford, he was the son of William and Martha Jane (Elkins) Kendall. He had been employed as a factory worker and was a member of the Indiana National Guard for nine years. Our little brother, the keeper of the family flame is gone. He was born March 6, 1958, to Donald Overton and Wilma (Hoagland) Cook in Johnson County. He worked hard his whole life and was a friend to all he met. Charles loved the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and racing. He was a life member of the Outdoor Sportsman Club of Mitchell and life member of the White River Bow Hunters Club. His great mind, love of outdoors and animals were his virtues in life. Charles is survived by his brothers, Donald Jr. (Brenda) Overton, Joe (Carolyn) Overton, and John (Linda) Overton; and sister, Beverly Clark. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald Overton and Wilma Cook. A celebration of life is being planned for a later date. March 27, 2017 Donna Sue (Hillenburg) Callahan Feb. 13, 1968 — March 24, 2017 Donna Sue Hillenburg Callahan, age 49, of Medora, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017, at Kindred Hospital South, Greenwood. Mrs. Callahan was a member of the First Assembly of God, Bedford. She was employed at White River Lodge in Bedford and was activity director there for the past several years. She also worked as a certified nursing assistant and as an activity aide at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown. She loved her job and always had a smile on her face. She thought of others first, listened, talked and prayed with anyone that needed her help. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Born on Feb. 13, 1968, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Donald and Fern Mikels Hillenburg, both of whom survive in Norman. On March 31, 1989, she married Vernon Callahan and he survives in Medora. Survivors include one son, Shane Callahan of Medora; one daughter, Ivy Sessions of Seymour; one brother, Terry (Amy) Hillenburg of Seymour; one sister, Cindy (Dale) Ehringer of Norman; three grandchildren: Domonic Parker, Christian Sessions and Gabriella Sessions; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Bryson Parker; paternal grandparents, Elmer and Marie Hillenburg, and maternal grandparents, Melvin and Mildred Mikels. March 20, 2017 Anita Gail Watson Sept. 29, 1951 — March 17, 2017 Anita Gail Watson died at 9:37 p.m. on Friday, March 17, 2017, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford. She was born on Sept. 29, 1951, in Louisville Ky., to Edward and Frances (Martin) Watson. Her mother was Shirley Godsey-Womack. She was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church in Springville. Anita or also called Aunt NeNe, loved children and was loved by kids of all ages, she had a natural way of endearing and caring for them. She worked as a nanny for many years. During her illness “NeNe” was surrounded by her loving church, family and friends. Throughout her lifetime she was proud to have served as an Awana leader, Sunday school teacher, singer and she enjoyed participating in numerous dramatic presentations for her church. She loved her Savior and served him daily. Anita’s influence impacted three generations by living her life as reflected in the quote that “Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs; the ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what”. Survivors include her brothers, Joseph E. (Missy) Godsey, Garland (Judith) Watson, Denny Watson and Ricky (Kathy) Watson; her sisters, Brenda (Phil) Scott and Sheila Wright; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews including, Joseph W. Moyne had been employed by Mitchell Community Schools and had served as secretary in the elementary schools since 1963. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1954, and was a member and organist at Liberty Baptist Church. Her life was children, and she loved to work. Born Sept. 18, 1926, in Mitchell, he was one of 12 children born to Ora Virgil and Hopal Vera (Matthew) Briscoe. He married the love of his life, Marjorie June Ray, March 19, 1949, and she preceded him in death Aug. 17, 2010. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Pacific Ribbon, Expert Rifleman and Victory Medal. He was a member of American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. Doodle was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 14 F. & A. M., Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Shrine, Mitchell Senior Citizens and First Christian Church in Bedford. Doodle retired from Carpenter Body Works, and was co-owner, with his brother, Richard, of Briscoe Mobile Homes before retiring. He then worked with his brother, Basil, doing carpentry work. Those who knew Doodle knew how much he enjoyed working with his hands, such as carpentry, woodworking and just keeping busy. He built his own go-cart and enjoyed racing it. After he stopped racing, he loved watching sprint cars, especially Kevin and Chase. An avid card player, he always looked forward to his Wednesday night game with Richard, David, Annick, Pauline, Bonnie and Danny. He loved dancing with all of his friends, and going to the boat also filled his retirement years. Doodle and Margie certainly dedicated their lives to their family. Born Jan. 28, 1951, in Bedford, she was the daughter of State Police Officer Robert C. “Bob” Gillespie and Naomi M. (Pierce) Gillespie. On Aug. 31, 1978, she married David Paul Watson of Mitchell. Apart from working at CVS in Mitchell, she was a musician and an entrepreneur who loved to cook, read and spend time with her family. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford. Survivors include her husband, David Watson of Mitchell; three sons, David Watson Jr., and Michael Watson, both of Solsberry, and Paul Gillespie of Mitchell; three grandsons, Nathan Watson of Oolitic, and David Watson III and Matthew King, both of Mitchell; seven granddaughters, Summer Watson of Edinburgh, Ariel Watson of Bloomington, Abby Hepner of Solsberry, Raynan Gillespie of Greencastle, Kyla Gillespie of Bedford, and Samantha Gillespie and Bella Hawkins, both of Mitchell; a sister, Cindy Ferrell of Bedford; four brothers, Bruce Gillespie of Evansville, and Dennis Gillespie, Mark Gillespie and Scott Gillespie, all of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. Cleveland, 77, of Bedford, passed away on Monday, March 6, 2017, at 8:50 a.m. at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He graduated from Bloomington High School with the Class of 1961. He was a member of the Indiana National Guard from 1965 until retiring as Master Sergeant in 2003. He worked for the Military Department of Indiana 1966-1999. Survivors include his wife, Brenda; two sons, Craig J. Stogsdill and Mark Allen Stogsdill, of Bloomington; one daughter, Melissa Lea Beasley of Albuquerque, N.M.; and one grandson, Colton Stogsdill. Jim loved building, talking about and being around hot rods. Jim never met a stranger. If he didn’t know you when he walked into a room, restaurant, garage or the grocery store, he knew everything about you before he left and you were friends for life. Martha Jane (Campbell) Trinkle Dec. 19, 1924 — March 1, 2017 Martha Jane (Campbell) Trinkle, 92, passed away Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center. Born Dec. 19, 1924, in Salem, she was the daughter of Thomas and Iva (Fultz) Campbell. Martha had been employed at Smith Cabinet Factory. She was an avid Indiana University Basketball fan and loved to read and cook. Clyde was born March 27, 1932, to Ruel and Lillie Hood Curtsinger in Nelson County, Ky. He married Christine Richardson May 26, 1955, and she survives. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim and Billy; and sisters, Christine, Anna Ruth, Marie “Sissy” and Peggy. (Quillen) Staley April 14, 1943 — Feb. 28, 2017 Sharon K. Staley, of Oolitic, died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017, at University of Louisville Hospital. Born April 14, 1943, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Earl Quillen and Ruby (Black) Pritchard. She married Raymond L. Staley on Oct. 9, 1965, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 2011. She was a skilled worker retiring from Ford Visteon. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She was a woman who was loved by all. She was caring, loving and sacrificing to all. Fusa Ross Feb. 8, 1920 — Feb. 24, 2017 Fusa Ross, 97, formerly of Mitchell and Japan, passed away at 10:35 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. Born Feb. 8, 1920, in Tokyo, Japan, she was the daughter of Nakano Sukesaburo and Katori Koma. She married William Lawrence Ross in Sapporro, Japan, on May 5, 1952, and he preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1978. Mrs. Ross was a strong and independent woman with a great faith in God and was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church. She worked tirelessly as an Army wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved caring for her family and took special care of her husband when diagnosed with cancer. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and working jigsaw puzzles. She had a love of birds and bird watching, all things floral, and hot tea. She was an avid anglophile and loved watching PBS. Survivors include her daughter, Barbara (Randy) Perry of Casey, Ill.; son, Robert (Cheri) Ross of Southlake, Texas; grandchildren, Tabitha (Jay) Wycoff, Kristin (Rick) Calentine, John (Daeng) Hirsch, Jerrod (Heather) Bales, Sarah (Sean) Adams, Seth (Alexia) Ross, and Kaitlin Perry; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
