March 31, 2015 Herbert L. Brooks Sept. 22, 1944 — March 29, 2015

Herbert L. Brooks, 70, Bedford, died at 9:47 p.m. on Sunday at Indiana University Health Hospice House.

Born Sept. 22, 1944, in Lafayette, he was the son of Harley and Audrey Brooks. He married Patricia Barrow on Jan. 10, 1970, and she preceded him in death in 2002.

He was a truck driver and member of the Bedford Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Brooks of Lafayette and Mike Thompson and wife Cindy of Mitchell; three daughters, Sheila Ferran of Paoli, Vonda Carpenter and boyfriend Eddie Kern of Mitchell and Wanda Sykes and husband Raymond of Mitchell; 23 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Gary Brooks; and a sister, Carol Pitman of Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, George and Robert; and one sister, Virginia.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Harold Godsey officiating. A committal service will be at 3 p.m. on Thursday at New Unionville Little Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the mortuary. There will be an Eagles service at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the mortuary.

Scott E. Kopp

Nov. 17, 1964 — March 28, 2015

Scott Edward Kopp, 50, Bedford, died at 11:17 p.m. on Saturday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born Nov. 17, 1964, in Bedford, he was the son of Charles “Bud” and Vickie (Lantz) Kopp.

He was a diesel mechanic for Sternberg in Bloomington. He was an avid RC Airplane enthusiast and member of the Monroe County RC Club.

Scott was a gentle giant, most kind hearted and a friend to all. He was a loving grandfather who enjoyed the outdoors and his dogs. He loved being on the river, in his boat, fishing, and riding his motorcycle. He was known as “one of the good guys”.

Survivors include his parents, of Bedford; a son, Christopher Kopp of Bedford; a daughter, Jessi Crane and husband Rodney of Oolitic; a grandson, Ryder Brantley Crane; two sisters, Andrea Pemberton and husband Paul of Bedford and Susan Vest and husband Tim of Spencer; nephews and niece, Cody Vest and wife, Julia, Dalton Vest and wife Mackenzie, Lane Pemberton and wife Abby, Jay Pemberton and fiancé Kirstin, Ally Pemberton and Grady Pemberton; two great-nephews and one great-niece.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Brother Tony Hanson officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the mortuary.

Cleta M. Murphy

Sept. 10,1917 — March 29,2015

Cleta May (Blackwell) Murphy, 97, Norman, died Sunday evening.

She was born Sept. 10, 1917, in Heltonville to Everett and Dertha (Todd) Blackwell.

In her working days she worked for Keith Radio, Fines and retired from RCA.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling to Florida, watching the Walton’s, Little House on the Prairie and church programs on TV.

She is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Terrill of Nashville; brother, Darrell (Glee) Blackwell of Bedford; sister, Betty Todd of Seymour; sisters-in-law, Bert Blackwell of Bedford and Essie Dell Blackwell of Heltonville; grandchildren, Dennis Terrill of Norman, Denise Terrill of Bedford, Cheryl (Greg) Hubbard of Bedford, Ashley Murphy of Norman, Chelsea Murphy of Norman, Steve (Phyllis) Stickles of Bedford and Pam (Michael) Knight of Springville; great-grandchildren, Heather Terrill, Amanda Donahue (Sean Prewitt), Chasidy (Brent) Thomas, Carra Harbstreit, Sandra (Kye) Louden, Melissa Flynn (Mark Perry), Clint Stickles, Logan Stickles, Christa (BJ) Fulkerson, Michael (Cory) Knight, Alan (Amber) Knight and Paisley Howe; great-great-grandchildren, Austin Holmes, Katelyn Holmes, Maddilyn Donahue, Carter Donahue, Autumn Holmes, Gatlin Holmes, Macie Bowsman, McKena Thomas, Devin Thomas, Cole Harbstreit, Cheyann Harbstreit, Clay Harbstreit, Jenna Louden, Memphis Louden, Cade Flynn, Bentley Dayhoff, Benic Perry, Owen Knight, Evelyn Knight, Aubrey Knight, Gabe Fulkerson, Grace Fulkerson and Brooklynn Stickles; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Berlin J. Murphy; son, Donald Murphy; son-in-law, Edger Lee Terrill; brothers, Ray, Wayne and Marion Blackwell; twin brothers at birth; sisters, Marie Fish, Lena Murphy, Reatha Seiverling and Wilma Allen.

Donna J. (Henderson) Lewis, 87, of Bedford, passed away Friday at her residence.

Born Jan. 1, 1928, she was the daughter of Merle and Pearl (Ogborn) Henderson. She married Phillip Max Lewis in Lafayette on Oct. 11, 1947.

She retired from Visteon.

Surviving are one daughter, Sharon L. (Patrick) Robbins of Bedford; three sons, William M. (Beth Ann) Lewis of Oolitic, Robert M. (Lola) Lewis of Bedford, and Donald K. (Sheri) Lewis of Bedford; seven grandchildren, Kristy Woodward, Holly Woodward, Josh Robbins, Carol Taylor, Scott Lewis, Heather Sowders, and Joe Lewis; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister Betty Lou Kelp and two brothers, Robert Henderson and James Henderson.

Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Phil Flynn officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Scotty Joe Sykes

May 2, 1959 — March 27, 2015

Scotty Joe Sykes, 55, of Bedford, died at 5:30 a.m. Friday at his residence.

Born May 2, 1959, in Bedford, he was the son of Charles and Bonnie (Smith) Sykes. He married Kimberly Baker on June 29, 1979, and she survives.

He was a skilled concrete finisher with S&S Construction and was employed by the city of Bedford for 15 years.

He attended Leatherwood Christian Church.

He loved to fish, hunt, garden, but most importantly loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Kim Sykes of Bedford; one daughter, Krista Blevins and husband Kyle of Bedford; two grandchildren, Kamden and Karsyn Blevins; his mother, Bonnie Sykes of Bedford; two brothers, Jeff Sykes of Bedford and Brad Sykes and wife Katrina of Bedford; his mother-in-law, Treva Baker of Bedford; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Sykes; his father-in-law, Neil Baker and a nephew, Joshua Sykes.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Warren Swango

July 17, 1937 — March 29, 2015

Warren Swango, 77, of Bedford, died at 12:10 a.m. on Sunday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born July 17, 1937, in Monroe County, he was the son of Richard and Lillian (Jones) Swango. He married Wilma Parker on Aug. 31, 1955, and she survives.

He was an excellent body repairman and the owner and operator of Swango’s Body Shop.

He loved bluegrass gospel music, playing fiddles and rebuilding them but most of all, he loved his wife and wanted her by his side always. Warren loved people and never met a stranger.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Wilma of Springville; two daughters, Pamela Hawkins and husband David and Tracy Baker and husband Tim, all of Springville; brothers, Lloyd Swango and wife Joyce of Smithville, Don Swango and wife Rita of Bloomfield; a sister, Wanda Daniels and husband Walter Kay of Solsberry; grandchildren, Matthew Hawkins and wife AnnMarie of Indianapolis, Brandon Baker, Holly Arnold and husband Brooks, and Jared Warren Baker of Bloomington; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Warren was preceded in death by his parents; and two siblings, James Swango and Linda Summitt.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Robert Phillips and Jerry Eads officiating. Burial will follow in Springville Christian Cemetery.

Charles A. Byers

May 10, 1933 — March 28, 2015

Charles Albert Byers, 81, of Noblesville, passed away on Saturday at Riverview Health.

He was born on May 10, 1933, to Harlan and Viola (Snider) Byers in Mitchell.

Charles was a graduate of Indiana University and proudly served his country in the United States Marines during the Korean War. After the war, he worked as an Electronics Engineer, and had worked for NASA on the Apollo Program. He then worked as a Systems Analyst for Stokely Van Camp; and retired from Fort Benjamin Harrison where he worked as a Civilian Agent.

In his spare time, Charles enjoyed fishing and gardening.

He is survived by nephews, Robert (Rita) Byers, Steve (Terri) Byers, David (Hiroko) Byers, and Rick (Lois) Lee; nieces, June (Sam) Miller, Cindy (Perry) Poe, Kathy (Dean) Garrison, Susie (Terry) Rhoades, and Marcia Wilson; aunt, Hazel Andrew; and sister-in-law, Maxine Byers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Francis and Marvin Byers; sisters, Doris Marshall and Helen Lee; and nephew, Barney Byers.

Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Randall & Roberts Funeral Center, 1685 Westfield Road, in Noblesville. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Geneva Axsom, age 85, of Bloomington, passed away Thursday afternoon at Bell Trace Health and Living Center following a lengthy illness. Geneva was born November 9, 1929, in the Chapel Hill area of Monroe County, the daughter of Earl and Avis Geneva (Blackwell) Prince. She worked 40 years at RCA, retiring in 1987, and was a devoted member of the Smithville Christian Church. Family and friends loved Geneva for her kindness, quick wit, strength and determination. She loved to care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, to crochet and to raise a garden. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

It is time to go home to Jesus and rest now, dear sister.

She is survived by her loving family, son, Gregory L. Axsom, of Bloomington; two granddaughters, Michelle Axsom and Kristi Axsom, both of Bloomington; one grandson, Jeremy Combs; and three great-grandchildren, Tesla, Abbey and Jimmy Farmer, all of Bloomington.

She is also survived by her twin sister, Fanny Juanita Farmer; and by sisters, Ida Pauline Axsom and Betty Jean Fox, all of Bloomington; and two brothers, Cloyd Prince and Carl Raymond Prince, both of Bedford.

Geneva was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nolin Axsom, in 1998; one son, Tony Edward; one sister, Lida Ruth Axsom; six brothers, Leroy Prince, Jerry Prince, Floyd Prince, Earl Prince, Jr., Russell Prince and Vacel Prince; and four brothers-in-law, James Axsom, Parvin Axsom, Clovis Tate and Noel Fox.

The funeral service will be on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Smithville Christian Church with Rev. Kyle Crafton officiating. Burial will follow in the Smithville Cemetery. Bret Fender, age 49, died Monday, March 23, 2015. Bret lived in Bedford and worked most recently as a lab technician at Ivy Tech in Bloomington. He was born in Bedford on April 6, 1965, and graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School in 1983. He was a talented guitarist with an eye for detail and a wry sense of humor.

Bret was beloved by his surviving family, including his father, Jerry Fender of Bedford; brother, Kent Fender of Bedford; sister, Abbey Lawrence of Bloomington; and his nieces and nephews Dallas, Kelsey, Nova and Hank.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Victoria Fender.

Lavada Vera Ann Whitehead, 63, of Bedford, passed away at 12:02 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born March 15, 1952, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of David Alonzo Malone and Frances Louise (Connerley) Scott.

Lavada was a certified nursing assistant and had been employed at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and StoneBridge Health Campus.

Surviving: daughters, Kelly Good of Bedford, Victoria (Tre) Gilbert of Bloomington and Jonetta Fulford of Bloomington; nine grandchildren, Andrea Good, MaKenzie Good, Tyler Vaughn and Matthew Vaughn, Logan Holtsclaw, Landen Elkins, Lexis Holtsclaw, Livia Holtsclaw and Madison Fulford; five great-grandchildrren; and a sister, Tesa Payton of Paoli.

Her parents and great granddaughter, Gracie, preceded her in death.

James L. “Jim” Torphy, 92, of Winter Haven Fla., formerly of Bedford and Bloomington, passed away March 25,in Tampa, Fla.

He is survived daughter, Kathy (Fred) Avant of Lutz, Fla.; son Bill, (Kara) Torphy of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; grandchildren, Jamie (Brandt) Meyer and Andy (Jessica) Avant of Lutz, Fla., and Megan (Will) Mahaffey of Bloomington, David (Heather) Torphy of Terre Haute, Patrick Torphy of Bloomington and Jamison Torphy of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Madison and Dawson Meyer, Abigail and Anabelle Avant of Lutz, Fla.; Jeep, Eli and Melissa Mahaffey of Bloomington. Also surviving is his beloved little brother, Dave Torphy of Bedford.

Jim was born on April 17, 1922, in Bedford; and was the son of Floyd and Lelah Torphy, both deceased. He was preceded in death by Margaret A. (Gabby) Torphy, his beloved wife of 64 years in 2012; and two brothers, Patrick Torphy and Jack Torphy

He and his wife Gabby owned Torp Aero Service, Inc, in Bloomington, from 1963 until 1983, where many aviators were trained by Jim, and his staff.

He was a Veteran of the Army Air Corp.

He was a member of the American Legion, Bedford Boat Club, Bedford Aero Club, OX-5 Aviation Pioneers, United Flying Octogenarians and Quiet Birdmen. Jim had accumulated over 40,000 flight hours, and was one of very few Aviation Professionals to obtain two of the highest decorations presented by the FAA. He received the Master Pilot Award, and the Charles Taylor Mechanic Award.

He also had a great love and passion for Indiana University Basketball.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesdayat St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford, with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial, with full Military Honors will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Bedford.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. on Monda and from 10-10:45 a.m. on Tuesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home prior to the service. There will be a Scripture Service from 7:30-8 p.m. on Monday.

Ruth Evelyn Hall, 86, Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown, formerly of Medora, died at 12:10 p.m. Thursday at the Hoosier Christian Village.

She was born June 12, 1928, in Lawrence County, the daughter of the late Raymond A. Stipp and Edith Grow Stipp. She married William Preston Hall on July 25, 1948, and he passed away in 1986.

She was a farmer’s wife and homemaker.

At the age of 18 she received her pilot license.

She loved gardening, quilting, cross stitching, cooking, and playing the piano. She enjoyed being with her extended family at the Hoosier Christian Village.

Survivors include one son, Preston Emerson (Sherry) Hall of Medora; four daughters, Barbara (Fred) Hall-Harmes of Columbus, Carolyn (Jon) McKinney, of Montgomery, Ill., Janice (Perry) Stegall of Medora,and Shari Hall, Fiance Larry Short, Kenosha, Wis,; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond L. Patricia A. “Patty” Grant, 60, of Bedford passed away at 3:54 p.m. on Tuesday at her residence in Bedford.

She was born on April 9, 1954, in Salem to Farrell Robbins and Juanita (Beaty) Newlin; she was a graduate of Springs Valley High School. Patty had previously worked at Wal-Mart as a pharmacy technician; she was also a homemaker and member of the Bedford Baptist Temple.

Patty married Gary Grant on Dec. 23, 1996, in Bedford, and he survives. Together they were the owner/operators of Little Grantville Bluegrass in Bedford. She was also a member of Leatherwood Valley Bluegrass Band, in which she played bass for nine years.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Grant of Bedford; two daughters, Samantha (Mark) Rife of Mitchell and C.J. (Bobby) Allbright of Paoli; four sons, Lester Grant and Louis Grant of Bedford and David Grant and Jason Grant of New York; one sister, Victoria Myers of Bedford; one brother, Michael (Patty) Robbins of French Lick; grandchildren, Tabitha (Joshua) Tolbert, Alyssa Rife, Morgan-Ann Rife, Dawson Allbright, Mason Allbright, Grayson Allbright, Dustin Grant, Breanna Grant, Ellie Grant, Craig Grant and Raegan Grant; and one great-grandson, Connor Tolbert.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Alice June Blackwell, 91, of Bedford, passed away peacefully at Garden Villa at 1:20 p.m. on Monday.

Born June 28, 1923, in Springville, she was the daughter of Julius and Roxie (Holmes) Blackwell.

She was a graduate of Springville High School. Alice was retired from G.M. Powertrain, Bedford. She was a member of U.A.W. Local No. 440, for over 60 years, where she had been vice president for many years and also was a recipient of the Walter Reuther award, which is the highest honor in the union.

She was very active and enjoyed traveling, loved people, and just enjoyed living life.

Surviving are one sister, Helen Blackwell Zike; three nieces, Joann Zike Hawkins, Glenda Zike Livingston and Janet Miller Wells; her friend Billie Joe Mahan; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Marcella J. Sowders Turner, 87, of Oolitic, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Monday.

She was born in Lawrence County on Jan. 8, 1928, to Heber and Martha (Hillenburg) Sowders. She married Raymond Albert Turner on Oct. 9, 1948, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 27, 1952.

She worked at RCA, Bloomington, many years, and then went to NWSC, Crane and retired from there.

She was a member of the Tunnel Hill Pentecostal Church in Owensburg, IN.

She is survived by one son, Reginald Gene Turner and wife Karen of Oolitic; three grandchildren, Charity Turner of Bedford, Rebecca (Tim) Jones of Oolitic and Kyle (Melanie) Turner of Bloomington; three great-grandchildren, Bryce Turner, and Kaiden and Kaylynn Jones; one step-granddaughter, Kaylea Jones; one brother, Heber (Mary Ellen) Sowders Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; three sisters, Peggy Bush, Judy Sowders and Dorothy Owens; and one brother, Jim Sowders.

Charles W. Hudson

Aug. 5, 1923 — March 13, 2015

Charles William “Bill” Hudson, 91, of Indianapolis, passed away March 13 in Zionsville.

Born Aug. 5, 1923, in Bedford, he was the son of Benjamin F. and Mary Gertrude Lemon Hudson. He married Martha Susan Pitman on April 11, 1948, in Lawrence County.

He started his career in furniture sales with Buck Lemon Furniture, Bedford, and later owned “Hudson Furniture” stores in Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. After selling his stores, he became interested in plastics manufacturing and introduced the first production of decorated melamine products in North America. He was later involved in property development.

Bill was a 1941 graduate of Bedford High School and attended Indiana University and Millsaps College. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II and Korea.

A longtime member of Crestview Christian Church in Indianapolis, he was also a Sagamore of the Wabash and a Kentucky Colonel. He loved IU Basketball and world travel.

Surviving are his wife Martha Susan Pitman Hudson of Indianapolis; son, Timothy Hudson of Indianapolis; daughter, Susan “Fred” Hudson Grimland (Dan) of Plano, Texas; granddaughters, Nicole “Nick” Goode of McKinney, Texas, and Miranda “Mir” Grimland Head (Bradley) of Charleston, S.C.; nephew, Chad Gerber of Cannelton; and cousins, Melissa Wagner Zook (Dale) of Martinsville, Julie Barto (John) of Greenwood, Diana Stanley (Jim) of Cape Cod, Mass., Charles “Bucky” Lemon and Claudia Lemon Cook (Steve), both of Florida, and Marc Wagner (Shelly) of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Benny Jack Hudson; and his sister, Carolyn Jean Hudson Gerber.

She was a homemaker.

James E. Martindale, 73, of Springville died Sunday at his residence.

Born July 30, 1941, in Springville, he was the son of Ezra and Geneva (Wagner) Martindale. He married Velma Jean Helton on March 31, 1964, and she survives.

He was employed at Indiana Limestone Company, retiring in 1998. He was a member of Local No. 741

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and mushroom hunting. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Jean of Springville; three children, Terri Marie Robbins and husband Kent of Bedford, Shawn Redding of Bloomington and James Martindale Jr. “Doodle” and wife Lana of Springville; eight grandchildren, Jason Veatch of Bloomington, Brent Veatch of Bedford, Allison Rayhill of Bedford, Shawna Roberts of Bloomington, Jena Clouse of Bloomington, Kristina Clouse of Bloomington, Thomas (T.J.) Martindale of Chicago and Cinnamon Martindale of Springville; 18 great-grandchildren; a very dear cousin, George (Mary) Lee of Kokomo; two sisters, Mary Lena Ratkovich and husband Danny of Patton Hill and Janet Baker of Solsberry; and several nieces and nephews.

Sarah H. West-Jackson, 82, of Bedford, died at 8 p.m. Saturday at St. Vincent Hospice, Indianapolis.

Born Aug. 6, 1932, in Marion, she was the daughter of Mitchell L. and Mary H. (Gretz) West.

She had been a telephone operator for Indiana Bell Telephone, later AT&T, for 42 years and was retired; she was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford, and had been a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Surviving are one daughter, Virginia (Frank) Jackson-Volbrecht of Bedford; two granddaughters, Heleena “Ellie” and Brynn Volbrecht; and several cousins, including Vicky Savarino, of Somerset.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

F. Wendell Gooch

Dec. 3, 1932 — March 21, 2015

F. Wendell Gooch, 82, Bloomington, formerly of Paoli, passed away Saturday in Bloomington.

He was born in Wright City, Mo., on Dec. 3, 1932, to Lyndell Franklin and Lois Ion Morris Gooch. He married Helen Mary Willis on June 5, 1955, and she survives.

Wendell was a graduate of University of Missouri School of Business and Public Administration.

Wendell and his family moved to Paoli from LaGrange, Ill., in 1981, when he purchased the Paoli newspapers from Mr. and Mrs. John Riley, and he owned the newspapers until 1997. Prior to moving to Paoli, Wendell was the executive vice president of Harris Trust and Savings Bank in Chicago, Illinois.

Wendell was the executive chairman of the board for Harris Trust of Arizona, a trustee of SEI Assets Allocation Trust, of STI Portfolio Funds, HSBC Advisory Fund Trust and of SBC Advisory Trust. He was also an independent trustee of Ridgework Variable Trust and a board member of Methodist Home Young Life Committee LT.

Locally Wendell was the chairman of finance for the First Chance Center of Paoli, and an early and sustaining member of the Habitat for Humanity. He was also recognized by the Indiana House of Representatives for his generosity and outstanding service to Orange County in 2005.

Wendell was on the board of the Orange County Community Foundation and was instrumental in the initial establishment of the Foundation in 1996. He was chosen as the foundation’s first Philanthropist of the Year in 2006.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandson, Peter Grider.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Gooch of Bloomington; sons, Lyndell Gooch and wife Donna of Louisville, Ky., and Wendell Gooch and partner Stephen Bognar of Chicago, Ill.; daughters, Deborah Howard and husband Bobby of Conroe, Texas and Kris Simmerman and husband James of Mitchell; four grandchildren: Jacob Fee, Ryan Fee, Toby Simmerman and Kirstan Gooch.

Glenn R. Duncan, 84, of Bedford, died at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

Born Aug. 28, 1930, in Owen County, he was the son of Emil and Clara (Bivens) Duncan. He married Elizabeth Steinsberger in 1953 and she preceded him in death in August 1987. He later married Carolyn Cox and she preceded him in death on May 29, 2012.

Glenn retired as pastor of the First Assembly of God Church in 2008. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Army.

Survivors include four daughters, DeAnna Carlson and husband Joe, Becky McNeely, and Sheryl Draus and husband Mike, all of Elkhart, and Cindy Dorsett and husband Randy of Bedford; one stepson, Mike Tryee and wife Judy, of Amory, Miss.; ten grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Miller and Katryn Greenwell, both of Clay City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; and a brother, Robert Duncan.

He retired as a die cast cleaner at General Motors. He was a member of U.A.W. Local No. 440 and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He had coached basketball and baseball for the Boys Club and enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching NASCAR.

Born May 14, 1931, in Hartleyville, he was the son of Guy and Zora (Williams) Weddle. He married Ina Penman on Oct. 18, 1952, and she preceded him in death on July 26, 1967. He later married Emily Hubbs Ernst on July 11, 1975.

He retired as an engineer for NWSC Crane and a veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and BPOE No. 826, where he was a past Exalted Ruler.

Norma June (Byers) Hutchinson, 86, of Bedford, passed at 2:23 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born Sept. 4, 1928, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Noble and Lula (Patton) Byers. She married James Lee Hutchinson on May 23, 1947, in Lawrence County; and he survives.

June went to Indiana University at age 38 with her daughters, where she earned two degrees. She taught at St. Vincent, Dollens Elementary in Oolitic, and the last 10 years at Stalker Elementary as a kindergarten teacher where Lee was principal. They both retired in 1987.

Education was very important to June and she was so proud that her daughters and five granddaughters were college graduates, married to college graduates for a total of 27 degrees in her family.

Therefore in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in June’s name to the North Lawrence Community Foundation at 460 W. St., Bedford and/or the Bedford First United Presbyterian Church to help establish a teacher scholarship fund in both of their names.

Her interests were family, church, travel and Indiana University basketball. She was a 62-year member and former elder of First United Presbyterian Church and the Lawrence County/Indiana Retired Teachers Association. June was very pleased with a certificate from Rep. Eric Koch citing congratulations on 67 years of marriage.

Surviving are husband, Lee Hutchinson; two daughters, Sherri (Michael) Alexander and Susan Hutchinson; son-in-law, Donald Lueking; five granddaughters, Mary Ann (Scott) Muckerheide, Laura (Luke) Aylsworth, Lisa (Brent) Dahl, Shannon (Dan) Irmscher, and Stacy (Dhru) Musunuru; nine great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

Karen Ivanson

May 17, 1951 — March 12, 2015

Karen D. Ivanson, 63, of Springville, died at 12:35 a.m. on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born May 17, 1951 in Lafayette, she was the daughter of Robert and Helen (Wolber) Evanson. She married Darryl D. Ivanson on November 18, 1983. She was a beloved and trusted pharmacist serving the Bedford community at Lincoln Plaza Pharmacy, Crowder’s Pharmacy and Med-Shoppe Pharmacy. She grew up in West Lafayette and studied pharmacy at Purdue University.

Karen was a member of Bedford First United Methodist Church, where she was active in the choir, was on several committees and managed the Thanksgiving and Christmas basket food programs for many years. She was also a member of Alpha Omicron Pi and the Bedford chapter of Psi Iota Xi.

Karen was a warm, loving woman who made everyone she met feel special and welcome. She could light up a room with her smile and laugh. Of her many talents, she most enjoyed interior decorating and sewing. Ivanson family vacations were often road trips, and Karen particularly loved the ones that went through the mountains or to the ocean.

Karen was an incredibly strong woman, who as the loving center of her family, selflessly always put their needs first. She is survived by her husband, Darryl, of Springville; her daughter, Alyssa Ivanson of Ft. Wayne; her son, Brian Ivanson and wife, Olivia, of Indianapolis; her sister, Yvonne Nash of West Lafayette; and two nephews, Paul Robert Nash of Bellview, Wash. and Steven Nash of Aurora, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18 at Bedford First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michelle White officiating. A smaller service will later be conducted on Wednesday, March 18 at 3 p.m. at the Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette. Aug. 17, 1925 — March 14, 2015

Rosalie May (Meredith) Stewart, 89, of Bono, passed away at 6:15 a.m. Saturday at her son’s home in Bono.

Born Aug.17, 1925, in Hall, Indiana, she was the daughter of Roy Earl and Parrie Mae (Taylor) Meredith. She married Norman Herbert Stewart June 19, 1949, and he preceded her in death July 20, 1983.

Rosalie was a former Lawrence County Treasurer serving from 1985-1996. She worked in various offices in the Courthouse for over 40 years.

She was a member of the Bono United Methodist Church until its closing and attended the Mitchell First Baptist Church until her death. She was a longtime member of the Theta Zeta Chapter of Phi Beta Psi Sorority, and served many years as a Pink Lady at Dunn Memorial Hospital.

Rosalie enjoyed attending a women’s Bible study group and going on outings with her many friends. She was always quick to feed any family stopping by her house. During their high school years, she served her grandsons and their friends lunch twice a week. Her bright smile and twinkling eyes will be missed.

Surviving are children, M. Dean (Paula) Stewart of Mitchell and Marilyn S. (Jay) Wilkins of  Burns, Tenn.; grandchildren, Julie (Matt) Spencer, Thomas (Tiffany) Wilkins, Eric Wilkins, John (Blair) Stewart and Scott (Heather) Stewart; grea-grandchildren, Reagan Delaney Spence, Quinn Matthew Spencer, Avry Brooke Stewart, Sloane Finley Spence, Teague Bennett Spencer, Shay Meredith Stewart, Charlee Rose Wilkins and Kyson Scott Stewart; a sister, Betty Jane Gorton of Franklin; a brother-in-law, Robert Stewart of Ovieda, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 1 a.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with the Rev. Reggie Clark officiating. Burial will be in Talbott Cemetery.

Barbara Pauline Curtis passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side at the Hendricks County Hospital on Friday, March 13, 2015. Barbara was born August 31, 1921, in Altin, Missouri, to Charles and Margaret (Hertz) Green. She married Joseph Henry Curtis in Lawrence County in 1939, and he preceded her in death. Barbara was employed at RCA in Bloomington, and also at M. Fines in Bedford. Her real passion was being a homemaker and growing beautiful flowers in her gardens. She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Bedford and the Ladies Guild; she was also a member of the home extension office.

Surviving are four children, Rita Ann Ward of Cloverdale, Rhea Anita Sanderson of Bedford, Mary Jo Schulenburg of Mitchell, Mary Franklin and husband John of Bloomington; one daughter-in-law, Patricia Curtis; and one sister, Clara (Green) Smith. She was blessed with 67 grand, great-grand, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son, Carl David Curtis; and four brothers, Vernard, Louis, Robert and Butch Green.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at 2 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford, with Pastor Greg Devore officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Mitchel Dee Eggers

May 19, 1954 — March 13, 2015

Mitchel Dee Eggers, 60, of Springville, Indiana, passed from this life in the comfort of his own home on Friday, March 13, 2015. He was born on May 19, 1954, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Kenneth Wayne and Remona Jane (Adams) Eggers.

Mitchel had lived in Springville, Indiana, for the past eight years, moving from Morgan County, where he had lived most all of his life. He worked as a heat treater in Indianapolis prior to his failing health. Mitchel served his country with valor during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Marine Corps from June 27, 1972, to June 26, 1974. He was honorably discharged, earning the rank of Corporal E-4.

He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends, including his three sons, Mitchel D. Eggers, II of English, IN, Edward P. Eggers (wife, Chiara-Mehak) and Denzell Alan Eggers, both of Martinsville; one daughter, Tiffany Crystal Eggers of Bloomington; three brothers, Kenneth Wayne Eggers (wife, Tina) of Missouri, Charles L. Eggers (wife, Tonce) of Brooklyn, IN, and Denzell A. Eggers (wife, Sarah) of Springville, IN; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Janice Scherer and Mildred J. Helms.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, March 16, 2015, from 10 a.m. to noon at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center, Martinsville. There will be a graveside service with military honors beginning at noon in New South Park Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest.

Norman June Hutchinson

Sept. 4, 1928 — March 11, 2015

Norma June (Byers) Hutchinson, 86, of Bedford, passed at 2:23 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born September 4, 1928, in Lawrence County, Indiana, she was the daughter of Noble and Lula (Patton) Byers.

She married James Lee Hutchinson on May 23, 1947, in Lawrence County; he survives.

June went to Indiana University at age 38 with her daughters, where she earned two degrees. She taught at St. Vincent, Dollens Elementary in Oolitic, and for the last 10 years at Stalker Elementary as a kindergarten teacher where Lee was principal. They both retired in 1987.

Education was very important to June, and she was so proud that her daughters and five granddaughters were college graduates, married to college graduates, for a total of 27 degrees in her family.

Therefore, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in June’s name to the North Lawrence Community Foundation at 460 W. Street, Bedford, and/or the Bedford First United Presbyterian Church, to help establish a teacher scholarship fund in both of their names.

Her interests were family, church, travel, and Indiana University basketball. She was a 62-year member and former elder of First United Presbyterian Church and the Lawrence County/Indiana Retired Teachers Association. June was very pleased with a certificate from Rep. Eric Koch citing congratulations on 67 years of marriage.

Surviving are husband, Lee Hutchinson; two daughters, Sherri (Michael) Alexander and Susan Hutchinson; son-in-law, Donald Lueking; five granddaughters, Mary Ann (Scott) Muckerheide, Laura (Luke) Aylsworth, Lisa (Brent) Dahl, Shannon (Dan) Irmscher, and Stacy (Dhru) Musunuru; nine great-grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

The funeral service will be on Thursday, March 19, 2015, at 11 a.m. at First United Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Daniel M. Watson officiating.

Surviving are his wife, Charlotte Miller of Norman; two sons, Sean and Bo Miller; his parents, Wayne and Bonnie Taylor; one sister, Samantha Taylor; one nephew, Kenneth Gage Cahill; grandparents, Clara Huddleston and Wayne Taylor Sr.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Erick N. Luttrell, 31, of Mitchell, passed away at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Bedford as result of an automobile accident.

He was born in Lawrence County on Feb. 9, 1984, to Greg Luttrell and Vanessa (Hackney) Arthur.

Erick enjoyed the outdoors and fishing, and being with family and friends. He loved to spend time with his girlfriend, Kristina Abrams and his five-month-old daughter, Myah Rose.

Survivors include his daughter, Myah Rose; his mother and stepfather, Vanessa and Randy Arthur of Mitchell; his girlfriend, Kristina Abrams of Mitchell; brothers, Jason (Shawna) Anderson of Oolitic and Clayton Luttrell of Bedford; sister, Stacie (Joe) Way of Bedford; grandfather, Marvin Hackney of Bedford; grandmother, Lucille Pearson of Bedford; stepbrother, Nick (Heather) Arthur of New Jersey; stepsister, Maggie Bell of Florida; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Greg Luttrell; maternal grandmother, Yolanda Hackney; stepgrandfather, Pete Pearson; uncle, Travis Hackney; and stepgrandparents, Dean and Cass Arthur.

Richard George Lawrence Jr., 64, Williams, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday at his residence.

Born Nov. 11, 1950, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Richard George and Penny Fern (Shoemaker) Lawrence Sr. He married Gerry Ann Lucas April 1, 1991.

He was a truck driver.

Richard was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War and a member of American Legion Post No. 250.

Surviving are his wife, Gerry Lawrence of Williams; children, Sheila Jo Brinson of Poland, Monica Sue Lawrence, Laura Katherine Lawrence, Richard Lawrence III, William Profitt, Nicole Welch, all of Indianapolis, and Christopher Welch of Bedford; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sisters, Nancy Slayman of Martinsville and Brenda Cook of Beech Grove.

His parents and brother, Kenneth Breedlove, preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Port William Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Chi Quita Minton

Chi Quita “Debbie” Minton, 60, of Oolitic, passed away on Thursday at her home in Oolitic after a courageous battle with cancer with her husband, family and beloved dachshunds by her side.

Born July 29, 1954, she was the daughter of Joseph and La Quita “Luckie” (Carter) Jennings. She married Jefferson “Jeff” Minton on July 1, 2000 and he survives.

She was a graduate of Heltonville High School and former employee at Visteon. She loved cooking, canning and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was much in demand at Christmas for her special candies.

Survivors include her husband, Jeff of Oolitic; children, Chris Luttrell, Misty Smith and Chad Luttrell; grandchildren, Rex “Levi” Luttrell, Chloe Luttrell, and Mercedez and Bentley Smith; two great-grandchildren, Madisyn and Kaysen Luttrell; father and mother-in-law, Jerry and Martha Reynolds; stepmother-in-law, Carolyn Minton; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Fields and Mizti Burk; a brother-in-law, Mark Minton; stepchildren, Jefferson “Brock”, Jacob and Landon Minton; and six stepgrandchildren, Jacob Minton, II, Justin Minton, Felicity Minton, Elizabeth Minton, Kaitlyn Teagarden, Makenzie Baker.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Richard and Helen Huddleston Carter; a sister, Sherene “Sherri” Bridges; a stepdaughter, Kathryn Tucker; and father-in-law, William “Bill” Minton.

Private services are planned with burial in the Judah Church of Christ Cemetery.

Marilyn Hays

Marilyn A. “Momma” Hays, age 85 (31,270.25 days old), of Hopkinsville, passed away at 2:31 a.m. on Feb. 21, 2015, at Jennie Stuart Medical Center after a long battle with COPD.

Mrs. Hays was born July 12, 1929, in Bedford, the daughter of the late Frank Foster and Doris Pitman Asbell. Momma Hays started working at Herb Hays furniture store when she and her husband, former mayor, Herb Hays first opened it on July 4, 1961.

She was a member of Southside Church of Christ.

Momma Hays was an active member of the community with strong support for the Trail of Tears. In 2013, the city of Hopkinsville honored Marilyn by declaring her birthday as Marilyn Hays Day. She was a great American, a devout Christian, a staunch Republican, a successful business woman, a philanthropist, and most of all, she was Momma Hays to us all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb Hays in 1987; her son, Jack Paul Hays in 2014; her brother, Albert Asbell; and her sister, Janice Reynolds.

Survivors include her daughters, Peg Hays and her husband Arlon Jones of Hopkinsville and Lee Ann Naghtin and her husband Ray of Hopkinsville; her daughter-n-law, Mrs. Jack (Paula) Hays of Christian County, Ky.; her grandchildren, Mandy Calhoun and her husband Mark, Michael Hays, Sam Naghtin and his wife Mary Van, Andy Naghtin and his wife Ellery, Travis Jones, Christina Meacham and her husband Chris, and Tracey Alcorn and her husband Jeff; and her great-grandchildren, Zoe Hays, Genna Calhoun, Lee Ellen Naghtin, DaQuane, Destinee, and Carly Meacham, Dustin, and Peyton Alcorn, and Zeke Jones.

Service was Feb. 28 at Southside Church of Christ with Mr. Terry Allen Jones officiating. Burial was in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-West.

Ermy Bartlett, 89, of Bedford died at 7:35 a.m. on Tuesday at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation, Bedford.

Born July 11, 1925, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Ermy and Esta (Smith) Bartlett.

He attended Needmore High School from which he was drafted into the U.S. Army during WW II. After returning home he started his career as a journeyman/planerman in the local limestone industry and later was in insurance sales as an independent agent, owning Bartlett Insurance, Bedford.

He was a member of Dive Christian Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Brenda (Woodrow) Wagoner of Mitchell; one son, Stephen (Lois) Bartlett of Williams; three grandchildren, Laura (Michael) Williams of Franklin, Aaron (Kristina) Wagoner of Springville, and Katelin Wagoner of Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Adelyn Macey Williams and Eloise June Williams.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bernard, Robert and Elbert “Bart” Bartlett; and three sisters, Oweeteh Mitchell, Imogene “Jane” Blevins, and Blanche “Margie” Deckard.

He was self-employed and an avid outdoorsman.

Floyd E. Sharp

May 21, 1928 — March 9, 2015

On a beautiful March 9th late winter morning at 7 a.m., Heaven’s gates were open wide as Daddy (Floyd E. Sharp) walked into the arms of Jesus.

Born May 21, 1928, in Buckville, Ark., he was the son of Labon and Marilla (Keeney) Sharp. He married the love of his life, Mary Connie Smith, on Feb. 12, 1954.

He was a piston pourer at General Motors retiring in 1982. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Malvern, Ark., Masonic Lodge and U.A.W. Local No. 440. After his retirement, they moved back to Malvern, Ark. to spend time in what Daddy and Mama considered home. He enjoyed many years of retirement doing what he loved, hunting with his son, gardening and just working at the old ‘home place’. Daddy loved the Lord and lived his life accordingly. He took great pride in being “Uncle Floyd” to his many nieces and nephews and has often said “gave the best hugs.”

Survivors include his wife, Mary Connie of Malvern, Ark.; two daughters, Pam Evans and husband Bill and Vickie Walker and husband Jon G., all of Bedford; a son, Randall Sharp of Malvern; two sisters, Gladys Sharp Collier and Orlene Sharp Manning, both of Malvern; five grandchildren, Joshua Walker and wife Kriston of Bedford, Jennifer Walker of Bloomington, Chelsie Walker of Indianapolis, Winter Robbins and husband Tyson and Chloe Evans, all of Bedford; three great-grandchildren, Payton and Riley Walker and Ella Kate Robbins and one due in the fall; Lisa Sipes Fountain (who was loved and considered like a daughter) and husband Duane and her children, Brycen J. and Lexie J. Marie Stewart of Bedford and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Alec, Orvin and Clayburn Sharp; and a sister, Lorene Sharp Cunningham.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the JA Funk Funeral Home in Malvern with Brother Donis Smead officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Lone Hill Cemetery in Malvern where military rites will be accorded.

Kathryn Richards Smith, 48, Oolitic, passed at Bloomington Hospital on Friday.

Kathi was born in Indianapolis on March 6, 1967, to the late Donnie Richards and Muriel (Pinky) Richards of LeHigh Acres, Fla.

She was a homemaker and grandmother. Kathi had great love for her grandchildren, cooking, gardening and playing cards.

She is survived by her husband of eight years, Michael Smith. Kathi’s children are Dohn Grigsby and wife Jessica, Kristin Grigsby, Steven Grigsby and Kelsey Smith. Kathi’s grandchildren are Grady Barker, Jack Barker, Addisyn Smith, Aiden Grigsby and Branch Grigsby. She is also survived by her three Dachshunds, Lacey, Dexter and Reggie.

She is preceded in passing by her father and one sister, Kristin Northern.

Mary L. (Dillon) Baker, 93, of Shoals, passed away at 5:10 p.m. on Sunday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

She was born in Martin County on May 11, 1921, to Roy H. and Della Mae (Lewis) Dillon. Mary married R. Kent Baker and he preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and had previously owned Lillian’s Dress Shop in Bedford in the 1940’s.

Mary attended Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Survivors include two nephews, Bob Dillon of Bedford and John Dillon of Oolitic; and two nieces, Beth Lewis of Oolitic and Lisa Dillon of Bloomington.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, John Dillon and Robert Dillon; one sister, Joan Frye; and one niece, Susan (Dillon) Sanders.

Phyllis M. Allen, 90, of Bedford, died at 3:05 a.m. on Sunday at Indiana University Health Bedford.

Born Nov. 15, 1924, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Alva and Katie (Smith) Smith. She married Lee Allen on Nov. 1, 1947; he preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1994.

She was a homemaker and worked the Christian Church Camp during the summers at the Indiana University Union in Bloomington. Phyllis worked in the North Lawrence School Corporation as the school lunch manager for 23 years, where she retired in 1989. She worked at the Hoosier National Forest for six years.

Phyllis was a lifetime member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was a very active member. She was also a member of the Grace United Methodist Women and the Bedford Boys Club Auxiliary.

Surviving are one son, Jack L. Allen of Bedford; one daughter, Barbara Lee of Bedford; grandson, Gregg (Aleta) Taylor of Fayetteville; granddaughter, Lora (Armel) Patton of Orleans; three great-grandsons, Dustin, Devin, and Dillon Chumley; two great-granddaughters, Emily and Kaci Taylor; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee; four brothers, Richard Smith, John Smith, and two in infancy; and three sisters, Helen Bennett, Donna Short, and one in infancy.

Dorothy Elvira Hughes, 87, of Bedford, died at 6:12 a.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born June 4, 1927, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of Sanford and Rheba (Lanam) Stewart. She married Frank F. Hughes on Feb. 7, 1947, and he survives.

She was a member of the Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene where she served as a Sunday school teacher, missionary president, Thanksgiving basket distribution and a steward on the board.

Survivors include her husband, Frank of Bedford; two sons, Samuel R. Hughes of San Antonio, Texas and Frank Keith Hughes and wife Susan, of Corinth, Texas; two daughters, Darlene Hughes and Jeanette Foreman and husband Keith, all of Bedford; 17 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Jackie Lee Hughes; one sister, Ruth Smith; four brothers, Ivan, Lee, Grant and Fred Stewart and one great-grandchild, Ryan.

Victor M. Bever

Oct. 30, 1966 — March 9, 2015

Born Oct. 30, 1966, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford to Lee M. Bever and Mary R. (O’Bannon) Bever, Staff Sergeant Victor Martin Bever, 48, passed away at 5:19 a.m. Monday at Indiana University Bloomington Hospital due to natural causes following a severe asthma attack.

Victor graduated from Eastern High School in 1986. Following his graduation Victor joined the Indiana National Guard and completed his Basic Training and Advanced Training at Fort Sill, Okla.

He was a Field Artilleryman serving as a Cannon Directional Specialist. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Achievement Medal. He was activated for the Georgia Olympics Security and during Hurricane Katrina. Victor expressed his love for his Country and other Service members by performing countless funerals and Color Guard ceremonies. He retired from the Indiana National Guard in 2011 after 25 years.

He worked for General Electric from 1987 until current and was a member of the Mason’s Gosport Lodge No. 92. Victor also served his community as a volunteer fireman and first responder for the Owensburg Fire Department.

Victor also loved to hunt, fish, play video games with his nephews and was an avid movie buff.

He is survived by three sisters, Kimberly A. Shell (Daemon) of Owensburg, Rebecca G. Lachgar (Simo) of Alpharetta, Ga., and Michele L. Hosapple (Shawn) of Greenwood; four nieces and two nephews, Caci (Tim) Beyers, Kendra (Tyler) Kalber, Nate Helton, Skylar (Zachary) Granger, Keller Shell and Ashlee Holsapple; two great-nieces and two great-nephews, Kanyin Granger, Kyten Kalber, Zyzix Granger and Kellex Kalber.

He was preceded in death by his father Lee M. Bever.

Visitation for Victor will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday at Allen Funeral Home, with a service at 7 pm. A graveside service will be held at a later date following cremation with ceremonial military honors by the Indiana Army Color Guard.

Rosalyn J. Hert

April 15, 1932 — March 6, 2015

Rosalyn J. Hert, 82, of Bedford, passed away peacefully on Friday at the home of her son in Bloomington.

She was born April 15, 1932, in Bedford, to Onis and Violet (Thomas) Hampton.

Independent and self-reliant, in 1954 Rose married John Hert and they shared a loving life together for over 60 years.

In addition to her husband, she will be missed by her sons, Michael (Elizabeth) Hert of Bloomington and Thomas Hert of Bradenton, Fla.; her daughter, Jennifer (Paul) Spoelhof of Fort Wayne; brother, Joseph Hampton of Mitchell; grandchildren, Amy Hert, D. Brady Egan, J. Nicholas Egan, Abby Fulk, Ali Rose Hert, Amberlyn Griffen, Garrett Spoelhof, and Henri Spoelhof; four great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Joyce; and brothers, Onis Frank, Kenneth, and Grant.

Although she was a partner in a beauty shop in Bloomington and VIP Fashions in Bedford for a time, Rose’s foremost contributions were always focused on her family. She exercised her artistic talent through quilting, much to the delight (and warmth) of her children and grandchildren. Leading by example, Rose inspired the young women of the family to develop strength of character, to have their own opinions and express them forthrightly, and to remain kind and compassionate in their roles as engaged citizens, loving partners, and nurturing mothers.

She enjoyed traveling and keeping up with old friends, and served the community as a member of the Power Squadron, the Springville PTO, and as a Girl Scout leader.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at Day & Carter Mortuary, 1133 Lincoln Avenue, Bedford, with visitation prior from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens in Bedford.

Phyllis Jo White, 74, of Heltonville died at 3:38 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Christian Village, Bedford.

Born April 21, 1940, in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of Charles Myers and Ruby (Mitchell) Myers. She married Kenneth R. White on May 26, 1978; and he survives.

She was employed at RCA, Bloomington, for 17 years and then worked at G.E. Bloomington, another 10 years, retiring in 1997; she was a member of Heltonville Baptist Church and had attended Englewood Baptist Church in recent years; she was a member of Heltonville Senior Citizens and was very active in the development and success of the Lawrence County Museum of History, having helped to prepare the first displays in the new museum and doing extensive genealogical work.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth White of Heltonville; one son, Andy (Katrena) Cunningham of Bedford; two daughters, Judy (Richard) Palmer of Tucson, Ariz., and Jamie (Patrick) East of Bloomington; nine grandchildren, Cansas Floerke, Brad, Robert and Tom Cunningham, Chelsea, Christian and Chase Root, and Calder and Mia East; three great-grandchildren, Alivia and Mark Mason and Alexandria Root; one sister, Vicky (Don) Toborg of Fayetteville; and one brother, Donnie (Donna) Myers of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Jack Myers; one sister, Sue Cassidy; and one son-in-law, George Root.

Charles E. “Billy” Scalf Jr., 66, of Bedford passed away at 8:25 a.m. on Sunday at his residence.

He was born in Corbin, Ky., on May 21, 1948, to the Rev. Charles E. Scalf Sr. and J. Aline (Brown) Scalf.

Billy was a graduate of Needmore High School Class of 1967, and a U.S. Navy Veteran. He attended Crossroads Community Church, and retired from the railroad. He worked many years for CSX, L&N, and Indiana Railroad Company. He was a brakeman, conductor and his last years were spent as an engineer.

Billy married Nancy (Flynn) Scalf on March 14, 1980, and she survives; also surviving two daughters, Kristi (Tom) Blake of Bedford and Regina Taylor and finance’ Leon Kinser of Bloomington; one son, Jeremy Scalf of Bedford; one stepson, Brent Allen of Bedford; two brothers, Bobby (Patricia) Scalf of Bedford and Mike (Marjorie) Scalf of Odon; three sisters, Jeanette (Perry) Staggs of Camby, Charlotte (Rev. Anthony) Judy of Morgantown, W.Va., and Wanda (Brent) Wever of Bedford, 11 grandchildren, Brittani Davis, Jacy Taylor, Brooklyn (Tyler) Ogden, Dylan Taylor, Todd Hicks, Logan Blake, Garrett Blake, Evan Allen, Dawson Scalf, Ivy Scalf, and Jordan Kinser; two great-grandsons, Chayton Shake and Karson Hammonds; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Ralph Southerland Jr.

Ralph Southerland Jr., 83, of Bedford passed away at 11 p.m. on Friday at Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born on Nov. 20, 1931, in Washington to Ralph Sr. and Lucy (Jackson) Southerland. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and attended the University of Evansville.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Bedford, and the American Legion.

Ralph married Janice Endris Southerland on March 7, 1986 in Louisville, Ky., and she survives.

He was owner/operator of Pool City Construction. Ralph and his wife Janice were managers of luxury high rises in Florida for 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Southerland; children, Catherine (Grant) Chambers, Pam Wilson, Karen (Lee) Hoefling, and Stuart (Carol) Southerland; stepchildren, Stan (Cindy) Endris, Mindy (Craig) Lingo, Steve (Mary) Endris, Jon (Tammy) Endris, and Greg (Tonja Kinder) Endris; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; and the mother of his children, Eleanor (Dant) Southerland.

Cremation was chosen, with a celebration of life at a later date.

Carl “Eddie” Mathis Sr., 48, Bedford, died Saturday at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

“It’s with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to one of the most honest and genuine men we’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. You were loved and respected by all that knew you. Like you always said, you were, ‘A man amongst men’ and you were always a man of your word. You taught all of us kids not only to show respect but also to accept nothing less in return. You were a one of a kind and nobody could dispute that. We couldn’t have asked for a better father or grandfather for our children. You always did the best you could with what you had and there aren’t enough words to describe how thankful for that we are. It’s so hard to say goodbye but we know you are no longer in pain and are in a much better place. Until we meet again, fly high ol’ man.”

Eddie is survived by Larry Durham (Dad); three sons, Carl Jr., Jacob and Larry Mathis; daughter, Amber Mathis; brother, Samual Mathis; five sisters, Rhonda Kinser, Michelle Holtsclaw, Mary Kinser, Sheila Durham and Sherryl Durham; seven grandchildren; and 28 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Diana Durham; and father, Ronald Mathis and his soulmate Deanna Mathis.

Born Sept. 19, 1926, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Edward Moore and Bernice (Moore) Bobbitt. She married Robert B. Douglas on Oct. 17, 1943; he preceded her in death on July 20, 2009.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bedford.

Lois had worked at RCA, both in Indianapolis and Bloomington.

Surviving are one brother, Charles Carter Bobbitt of Seymour; two sisters, Kathleen Anderson of Bedford and Cynthia Annice Reynolds of Medora; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Gary Michael Baldwin, 66, of Bedford died at 7:25 a.m. on Thursday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born June 9, 1948, in Dayton, where his parents were serving in the military, he was the son of Kenneth E. and Lovetta M. (Mikels) Baldwin. He married Karen E. Sears on April 13, 1968, whom he met on a blind date in 1966, and she survives.

He was a graduate of the Heltonville High School with the Class of 1966 and RETS Electronics School in 1968. He had formerly worked at USNAD Crane and was an electrician at General Motors for 38 years.

He loved the outdoors and had been an avid deer hunter. He participated in archery tournaments all over the country and loved John Deere tractors, bird watching and walking his dog at the Avoca Fish Hatchery. He was a life-long member of the White River Bow Hunters and a director of the International Bow Hunting Organization.

Survivors include his wife Karen of Bedford; a daughter, Michelle Hicks and husband Brian; a son, Michael Baldwin and wife Megan; grandchildren, Megan Hicks and fiancé Ryan Rosson, Mariah Hicks, and Madeline and Jaden Baldwin; great-grandson, Atticus Rosson; a sister, Linda Brooking and husband Eddie; brothers, Dale Baldwin and wife Sharon and Dennis Baldwin; a brother-in-law, Alton Qualkenbush; several nieces and nephews; and his dog, Mason, whom he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Danny Baldwin; and a sister, Trena Qualkenbush.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Jim McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca.

Ronald Eugene Kern, 75, of Bedford passed away Wednesday at Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville.

Born May 15, 1939, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Wilbur W. and Mae (Miller) Kern. He married Sharon Porter, and she survives.

He was a graduate of Bedford High School and worked at Cummins Engine Co. in Columbus for 40 years until his retirement in 1999.

He enjoyed woodworking, tinkering in his workshop and gardening with his wife. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who always looked for the positive in a situation.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sharon of Bedford; two children, Chris of Loogootee and Cathy Zimmermann and husband Bob of Evansville; four grandchildren, Joey Kern, Anna, Robby and Max Zimmermann of Evansville; a brother, Roger Kern and wife Carol of Bonita Springs, Fla.; an uncle, Claude Kern (who was like a brother) and wife Sarah; and several other aunts and uncles; cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Dallas Kern.

Dean L. Zike

Dec. 20, 1930 — March 5, 2015

Dean L. Zike, 84, of Brownstown passed away on Thursday at his home at 12:10 p.m.

He was a member of the Brownstown Christian Church. He and his wife Jane operated the Frostop Drive-in in Brownstown for several years. He was also a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

He had graduated from the Freetown High School and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana Central College and a master’s degree from Indiana University. He taught and coached basketball at Freetown, Clearspring, Cortland, Heltonville and Jennings County. After teaching, he was an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance. He retired in 1995, and he was agent of the year in 1984 and 1985.

He was a combat veteran of the Korean War. He was a sergeant in the 27th Regiment, 25th Division from 1952 to 1953 while he was in the Army. He enjoyed watching college basketball on TV and was a Cincinnati Red’s fan.

Born Dec. 20, 1930, in Freetown, he was a son of Dayton Henry and Bertha Iva (Fields) Zike. On Feb. 14, 1952, in Brownstown, he married Jane Mullen, who survives.

Other survivors include two children, Denise (Ron) Hawn and Andrew Zike; one brother, David (Mary) Zike; and several loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mildred Huber

John E. “Gene” Kacher, 81, Mitchell, passed away at 4:29 p.m. Wednesday at his residence.

Born April 27, 1933, in East Chicago, he was the son of John and Rose (Shaydik) Kacher. He married Annabeth Christy on Aug. 15, 1963.

Gene retired from General Motors with 33 years of service.

He was a member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsman Club, National Rifle Association, and Spring Mill Lodge Fraternal Order of Police No.172. Gene served more than 20 years on the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed woodworking and fishing trips in Canada.

Gene was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post No. 250, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

His parents and daughter, Roxanne Gilbert, preceded him in death.

Rev. Dr. Donald F. McMahan

Jan. 17, 1918 — March 4, 2015

The Rev. Dr. Donald F. McMahan was born during a major winter snowstorm on Jan. 17, 1918, on his family’s White River farmstead just south of Bedford. He died during a major snow storm on March 4, 2015, at the age of 97, in Bloomington. Both times he was home and comfortably in bed and surrounded by family.

In 1937 he was graduated from the Mitchell High School. While a student at Indiana University he married Violet Ruth Smith, who was also from Mitchell.

After graduating from the university, where he studied psychology, he attended the Garrett Theological Seminary of the United Methodist Church in Evanston, Ill. Through the years he has served Methodist congregations in Indiana towns: Arlington, Greene County Chapel, Mineral, Crawfordsville, and Plainfield. He also served in an administrative ministry as the District Superintendent of the Greencastle, Lebanon, and South Bend districts of the United Methodist Church.

Other distinctions included being a delegate to the General Conference of the Methodist Church and then a delegate to the Annual World Methodist Conference in Oslo, Norway. The Rev. McMahan’s ministry was multifaceted and included serving as a Trustee of the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, DePauw University in Greencastle, and the University of Evansville in Evansville.

He was also an adjunct faculty member of the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. Instrumental in the founding and administration of Wesley Manor, a Methodist Church retirement facility near Lafayette, he also served as the administrator of two other Methodist Retirement Homes: Haven Hubbard near South Bend, and Asbury Towers in Greencastle.

Through the years he enjoyed golfing and swimming and was a member of three country clubs. He relished quiet time fishing and gardening. And, he was an avid follower of Indiana University basketball and football. His wife and he traveled not only in Europe, but in the Caribbean Sea and Panama Canal; Canada, Alaska and Hawaii, and Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 73 years; his parents, Daniel and Goldia McMahan, a brother, Doctor V. C. McMahan, and a sister, Irene Pless, and their spouses.

Surviving family members include his son, Larry McMahan; daughter Susan Stein; granddaughter, Jessica Stein; his sister, Ruth Eveleyn Padgett; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at the First United Methodist Church, 4th and Washington streets, Bloomington, from 9-11 a.m. Saturday with the funeral service to follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the Cresthaven Cemetery in Bedford.

Patricia Ann Buker, 66, of Avon, formerly of Kokomo, passed away on Tuesday at her residence.

She was born in Bedford on Sept. 20, 1948, the daughter of Ralph and Marybel (Louden) Noel. She retired from Delco Electonics in Kokomo.

She was a member of the Avon United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her grandchildren and auto racing.

She is survived by her children, Philip (Becca) Lucas of Avon, Meri Lyn (Steve) Bisch of St. Louis, Mo., Scott (Linda) Buker of Birchwood, Tenn., and Jeanette (Doug) Ramer of Nashville, Tenn., 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded by her parents; Ralph and Virginia Noel and Marybel and Charles Stanfield; her husband, Richard Buker; a son, Eric Buker; and her sister, Connie Starr.

James R. Davis, 71, of Bedford, passed away at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Born Nov. 4, 1943, in Mitchell, he was the son of Beverly and Muriel (Richason) Davis. He married Sheila Hatfield on Oct. 21, 1983, and she survives.

He was a graduate of Mitchell High School.

He retired from General Motors on April 1, 1997 and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Gillen Post  No. 33 American Legion and U.A.W. Local No. 440.

He attended the Methodist Church.

Jim loved to be outdoors and in his welding shop. He enjoyed golf and being with friends and family. He was respected and loved by many. He was a loving, wonderful husband, dad, grandpa and brother. He loved his family and had a heart of gold. Jim was a good friend to many. He is going to be sadly missed and will leave a broken heart to many left behind but the good Lord was ready to take him home.

Survivors include his wife, of 31 years, Sheila A. Davis; children, James Davis and companion Jamie of Bedford, Joey Davis and wife Tammy of Mitchell, Jeana Godsey and husband Steve of Bedford, Carl Vincent and companion Debbie of Springville, Jeremy Vincent of Bedford, Brandon Vincent and wife Dusty of Mitchell; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gary Davis and Bob Davis and wife Kathy, all of Bedford; two sisters, Beverley Staggs and husband Danny, of Bedford and La Rue Seims of Washington, D.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Marlyn E. Mundy

Marlyn E. “Marley” Mundy, 85, of Bedford, gained his heavenly wings at 4:13 p.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. He was surrounded by his loving family and pastor.

Marley was born July 30, 1929, in Bedford, to Paul C. and Ethel M. (Andis) Mundy. He married Marilyn Rose Pannell on June 16, 1950; and she survives.

Marley was a graduate of Bedford High School, Class of 1948. He was a member of Davis Memorial Church of the Nazarene.

He worked for Kaiser Aluminum.

His children and grandkids were his life in so many ways. He lived his life as a devoted servant of God, and it was evident to anyone who knew him. He will be missed here on Earth but rejoicing is taking place in heaven.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyn; two daughters, Dixie (Darryl) Callaway of Bedford, and Deidra (Greg) Hill of Greenwood; one son, Daniel Mundy of Bedford; grandchildren, Brandon (Nikki) Deckard, Brad (Stacy) Mundy, Brooke Hoover, Whitney (Toby) Harrison, Stephanie (Jason) Johnson, Michelle Everly, and Jenna (Tony) Epkey; great-grandchildren, Blayne, Brylee and Braylen Harrison, Griffin and Anna Deckard, Matt, Gregory and Joshua Hoover, Karissa and Garrett Mundy, Nick, Allie and Olivia Johnson, Ashlyn, Jacob, Tyler and Arianna Everly, and Chance and Chase Turner; step-grandchildren, Josh and Caitlyn Powell; and two step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary Helen “Honey” Radcliff Collier, 97, of Paoli passed away Monday at Westview Nursing Facility in Bedford.

She was born in Paoli on July 21, 1917, to Alonzo and Estella Roberts Radcliff. She married Russell Collier on Dec. 31, 1938.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Russell; brothers, Everitt, Merle, Earl and Clyde; sisters, Lois Hammond, Geneva Easterday, and Wanda Slaten; and grandchildren, Todd Leonard and Aimee-Lynne Collier.

She was a member of the Paoli United Methodist Church, Paoli Chapter No. 472 Order of Eastern Star, Orange County Democratic Auxiliary and an inactive member of Tri Kappa.

She worked at Orange County Bank, Hoosier Uplands, Hoosier National Forest, and Paoli Health and Living. She finally decided to retire at the age of 85.

Mary Helen had lived in Paoli her entire life, except for a time in the 1950s and 60s, when she lived in Florida and raised her children. She moved back to Paoli to take care of an ill family member.

Survivors include a son, David Russell Collier and wife Nancy of Solsberry; daughter, Kathy Hayse of Bedford; grandchildren, Clay Collier of Ellettsville, Tyler Collier and wife Mallory of Bedford, and Jay C Hayse of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

Lola May Davers, 86, of Brownstown passed away at 6:22 p.m. on Sunday at the Schneck Medical Center, Seymour.

A housewife most of her life, she was a member of the Brownstown Church of the Nazarene. She was a member of the quartet group Sweet Adeline in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. She enjoyed painting, mostly landscapes.

Born Oct. 25, 1928 in Oolitic, she was a daughter of William and Ethel (Henderson) Blackwell. On Feb. 23, 1946, in Bedford, she married Horace L. “Shorty” Davers and he preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 2003.

Survivors include: a daughter, Barbara (Max) Perry of Brownstown; two grandchildren, Pat and Lori Rigdon and Tim and Leslie Wisdom; six great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday and from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday at the Winklepleck-Weesner Funeral Home in Brownstown.

Faithful Servant, Barbara J. Aliano, 80, of Bedford, was called home to live eternally with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday at 12:10 a.m.

Born May 19, 1934, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Harry and Mildred (Davis) George.

Barbara graduated from Oolitic High School and worked at A&P and Standard Grocery stores before becoming a stay at home mom and homemaker.

Barbara was a devoted Christian and member of the Dive Christian Church where she taught Sunday school for over 30 years.

Barbara was also a devoted wife, mother, mamaw and great-mamaw. She loved having her family around her and always put everyone else’s needs before her own. Barbara was known for the unconditional love she had for her family, and her love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She touched the lives of so many with her beautiful smile, sweet demeanor and the compassion she had for others. She loved to talk about Jesus and would share His Word with anyone who would listen.

As we mourn the passing of our loved one here on earth, it is a time of celebration as the angels in Heaven are singing for another child of God (Barbara) has entered her eternal home to live with her Heavenly Father for eternity.

Barbara married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Aliano on Nov. 16, 1952, and he survives. Other survivors include four children, daughter Bobbi Jean Leach and husband Mike of Williams, daughter Tammy March of Indianapolis, son Steven Robert Aliano and wife Bambi of Bedford, and daughter Shawna Post and husband Jason of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Justin Leach and wife Stacie, Erika Barnhill and husband Jeff, Jennifer Gillespie and husband Jason, Matthew March, and Chase Aliano; eight great-grandchildren, Jacob and Colton Leach, Ashley, Makinsey, Collin, and Halley Barnhill, Luke and Keegan Gillespie; one sister, Margaret Day and husband Kenny of Bedford; three sisters-in-law, Marilyn George of Owensburg, Shirley Waggoner and husband Ray of Bedford and Mary Aliano of Bloomfield; and a brother-in-law, Sandy Clark of Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Jonathon D. March in infancy; a brother, Robert D. George; and a sister, Helen Mae Clark.

Barbara will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Paul Keith

Paul Keith, 79, of Williams, lost a four-year battle with multiple myeloma at 9:50 p.m. on Wednesday at StoneBridge Health Campus.

Born Aug. 25, 1935, in Diablock, Ky., he was the son of Daily and Bertie (Cornett) Keith. He married Marjorie Jewel Sanders Keith on Sept. 8, 1955, and she survives.

He worked for Indiana Limestone Company and was a farmer and owner of Keith & Sons Bulldozing. He was a bus driver and retired as a custodian for the North Lawrence Community School System.

He was a charter member of the Bethel Baptist Church of Williams where he had served as a deacon, secretary-treasurer and song leader.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Jewel, of Williams; a daughter, Pauline Eads and husband Rich of Athens, Ala.; three sons, LaRon Keith and wife Kelly of Deland, Fla., Micah Keith and wife Lori of Bedford and Mickey Keith and wife Angie, of Mitchell; nine grandchildren, Corey, Eric, Graham, Levi and Cody Keith, Jessica Goldburg, Kyle Eads, Chelsea Tipton and Chad Tipton; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Amos Keith and wife Juanita, of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Regina Brock and husband Lee, of Williams and Joyce Tipton and husband, Jim, of Lexington, Ky.

Clarice (East) Abner, 88, of Bedford, died at 10:39 p.m. Friday, February 27, 2015, at IU Health in Bloomington, IN.

Born June 8, 1926, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Ira East and Lottie (Terrell) East.

She married Edgar Harold Abner on October 25, 1947; he died January 17, 2010.

She was retired from M. Fine and Sons, Bedford, and was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Leesville, where she served as treasurer for many years.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda “Jo” Travis and Cinda Powell, both of Bedford; a niece, Judy (Steve) Weddell, Medora; four grandchildren, Talos C. Travis, Raleigh, N.C., Beth M. Mathews, Bedford, Michelle L. Jacks, Columbus, and Mark A. Nicholson, Bedford; nine great- grandchildren; one sister, Velma Goen, Bedford; two brothers, Paul and Joseph East, both of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and one sister.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Leesville, with Rev. Paul Neuman officiating. Burial will be in Leesville Cemetery.

Dr. Robert Reed Wylie

Oct. 24, 1939 — Feb. 27, 2015

Dr. Robert Reed Wylie, 75 of Bloomington, Indiana, died Friday, February 27, 2015.

He was born October, 24, 1939, in Bloomington, Indiana to the late Charles & Mary Frances Wylie. He graduated from University High School in 1957, Indiana University in 1961, and the IU Medical Center in 1965.

Dr. Wylie served his country as a captain in the medical corps of the U.S. Army from 1966-68 in Vietnam at the 93rd evacuation hospital, and also as a battalion surgeon with the 1st Infantry Division. During his military career, he earned the Bronze Star.

Dr. Wylie had his own family practice and was the director of the Health & Wellness Rehabilitation Facility in Hobart, IN. Later, he maintained a family practice in Bloomington, IN, and then served as medical director of GM Power Train Division in Bedford, IN. In addition to his extensive medical career, he reviewed medical malpractice cases for various law firms and instructed IU medical students on the Bloomington campus.

Dr. Wylie was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity (FIJI), Rotary Club International, belonged to the American Legion Post #18 in Bloomington, IN, a member of the Indiana University Hoosier Hundred, and served as the high school athletic team physician for Hobart High School and other schools in Northwest Indiana. He was the recipient of numerous civic and community awards including, the Indiana I.A.A.A. Distinguished Service Award, the State Medical Association Commission on Sports Medicine Team Physician of the Year award, and was inaugurated into the Hobart High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

Dr. Wylie is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Nancy Louise (Wagoner) Wylie; children, Jodie (husband, Curtis) Hart, of Barrington, IL, and Richelle (husband Kevin) Rider of Carmel, IN; grandchildren, Carter, Cate, Cooper & Cash Hart; and brother William (wife Danna) Wylie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles and Sharon.

A gathering in celebration of Dr. Wylie’s amazing life will be Sunday, March 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Divvy restaurant, 71 West City Center Drive, Carmel, IN 46032. Inurnment with military honors will be at a later date in Rose Hill Cemetery, Bloomington, IN.

Merlin Baker

Merlin Baker, 73, of Centreville, Mississippi, died Friday, February 27, 2015, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Born in Owensburg, Indiana, Merlin was a retired maintenance supervisor with GM. He was an Air Force veteran, a Shiner, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Elks Lodge and a Protestant.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Baker of Centreville, Mississippi; son, Damon Kern (wife, Bridget Stillons) of Bedford, Indiana; brother, Jon Ashley Baker (wife, Rita) of Converse, Indiana; three grandchildren, Jordan Stillons, Kynndall Kern, and Branson Kern.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ziba Baker and Arvetis Mae Hubbard Baker.
