June 30, 2018 Shayla Renea Nelson Sept. 11, 1995 — June 26, 2018 Shayla Renea Nelson, 22, of Bedford, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2018, at Schneck Medical Center, Seymour. Born Sept. 11, 1995, in Bedford, she was the daughter of David Nelson Jr and Carrie Watson. She was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School, Class of 2014. Shayla worked at Stone City Products, Bedford. She later married William Fred Harrell July 11, 1992, and he survives. She had worked at Trav-Ler in Orleans, M.F. Fine & Sons and Bell Cleaners in Bedford. She retired from Ford (Visteon) as an assembly line worker. She was a member of Faith Mission Church and IUE-CWA Union of Bloomington. Survivors include her husband, Fred, of Williams; a son, Jerry Mullis (Tonya) of Freeport, Florida; a daughter, Judy Harrison (Mark) of Mitchell; five grandchildren, Paul, Jeremy and Jason Mullis, Shanna Pemberton and Natalie Smith; nine great-grandchildren, Joseph, Ty, Eva, Stella, Charlotte, Finn and William Mullis and Reinyn and Koltyn Clute; stepdaughters, Wanda (Mullis) Westbrook of Jackson, Ohio, and Nina (Richard) Doan and Connie (Danny) Flynn, both of Bedford; nine step-grandchildren and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Terry, 62, of Oolitic, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018, surrounded by his wife, Rebecca; daughter, Amanda Mitchell and her husband Scott; and daughter, Lindsey Gerkin and her husband; Kyle. He had four grandchildren, Gracyn and Dalton Ritchison and Jacob and Eli Mitchell. He was the youngest of ten children, Bob (Mary Ann) Terry, Jim Terry, Marilyn Sue “Susie” (Terry) Taylor, Mary Ann Terry, all preceded him in death. Shirley (Jim) Lewis, Ralph (Shirley) Terry, Tom (Lynn) Terry, Randy (Annell) Terry, Kenny (Marty) Terry, all survive. Jack loved all things outdoors, and he was never seen without a cup of coffee or a big smile. He enjoyed gardening and his many flower beds, his German Shepherd, Hank, and all the many cats that showed up on his porch that he fed. He also was a fantastic cook, and no one could make fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans better than him. He adored his family whose hearts are broken but look forward to the day they will see him again. Hover and Betty (McQuan) Hover. He was a retired Pipe Fitter from General Motors in Bedford and a member of the U.A.W. Local No. 440. Wayne loved camping, NASCAR and collecting GM cars. James Grogan April 6, 1939 — May 30, 2018 James Grogan, age 79, of Michigan City, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Trail Creek Place. He was born April 6, 1939, in Bedford, to Edward Joseph and Dora Ruth (nee Hilton) Grogan who preceded him in death. He was married in 1963, in Lawrence County, to Brenda Kay McFadden who preceded him in death. James is survived by his daughter, Mitzi (Jack) McGlone; sister, Phyllis Byers; brothers-in-law, Don Underwood, Charles (Helen) McFadden; and nieces, Jane (Tim) Byers Goodwin, Teresa Byers (Mike) Chestnut, Diane Byers (Kevin) Pannell, Carol Underwood (Eric) Schulz and Jill Underwood; nephews, Tom (Becky) Underwood, Ellen McFadden, Pat (Elaine) McFadden; many great-nieces and nephews; his dog Buddy and cat Blackie. Also Dawn the Deer who brought her family to eat every night, waiting for him at the same time every evening. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda McFadden Grogan; his parents; a brother, Larry Grogan; a sister, Reva Underwood; brothers-in- law, William McFadden; and Richard Byers; a nephew, Joe Underwood; and a great-great-nephew, Colton McFadden. James worked for Bethlehem Steel for 40 years. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army and later the National Guard. He was a member of Countryside Christian Church and most recently at Earl Road Christian Church. On Sunday mornings he would position himself by the front door to greet everyone who came in. His neighbors deemed him “The Mayor” as he took pride in his street and walked his dog up and down to talk to neighbors and keep abreast of the latest happenings on the block. James belonged to the ACME Lodge No. 83 F. & A.M. member of Orak Shrine in Michigan City in which he participated in the Scottish Rite and Oriental Band. Services were June 4 in Michigan City. July 5, 1929 — June 20, 2018 Earl Johnson Jr., 88, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with family on Wednesday, June 20, 2018. He was born in Lawrence County to Irma Cleo (Turner) Johnson Hendricks and Earl Johnson, Sr. Earl attended elementary school at Smithville and Needmore then moved to Oolitic where he graduated from Oolitic High School in 1947. Earl served in the United States Navy from December 1947 to January 1950. Earl worked at Sarkes-Tarzian, for over 20 years then at Cook, Inc. for 40 years, finally retiring at 84 in 2013. Earl was a Master Mason at Stanford Lodge No. 173 and a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis. In his younger days, Earl loved working with horses, breaking and training with Jess Bennett, a dear friend in Oolitic. Earl showed horses himself then became a horse judge. He stopped judging when his sons, Brad and Brian started showing at age 5 and 3 years old. Both were very successful in horse showing. Brad is still competing and breeding horses. Brian worked at the Dixie Stampede dinner and horse show for over 20 years in Myrtle Beach and Florida. The family enjoyed many summers showing and camping with horse show friends all over Indiana and nearby states. Earl is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patti; sons, Brad Johnson and Brian Johnson of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Donald Earl Johnson Sowders (Rochelle), and his mother Donna Sowders; sister-in-law Mary Ellen Johnson; granddaughter, Jessica (Daniel) Day; grandsons, Blaine Johnson and Eric Sowders; also niece Kathy (Joe) Tillman and nephews, Bill (Carol) Johnson and Bret (Michelle) Johnson. Born Feb. 25, 1944, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Ralph G. and Maria M. (Mosier) Wright. He married Edna Hacker on May 6, 1989, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 2016. He retired from GM Powertrain as a machine operator and custodian. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Englewood Baptist Church. June 19, 2018 Robert Alan ‘Bobby’ Crulo Aug. 10, 1952 — May 30, 2018 Robert Alan “Bobby” Crulo, 65, residing in Oak Creek, Colorado, passed away at 9:45 p.m. May 30 at his residence. Bobby was born to Eva Mae Houpt and Howard Ray Crulo Aug. 10, 1952. He grew up in Avoca watching his mother manage the Crulo Trucking Company. Bobby was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1973 and served two years. He worked construction for several years and went on to work at Crane for 22 years as an explosive operator. Bobby married Karen D. Crulo on Dec. 28, 1984. He remodeled a house in Springville where they resided until 1990. Then they moved into Bedford, he never really liked town, he was a country boy at heart. He had a love for an ice cold Coca-Cola and you rarely saw him without a big gulp in his hand. He also loved people and never had a harsh word to say about anyone. He made best friends with the convenience store workers and never knew a stranger. He gave new meaning to give the shirt off your back. You knew he really had a soft spot for you if he referred to you as darling or young lady. Bobby loved basketball. Lived and breathed the game of basketball is more accurate. From the IU clothes he wore to the countless conversations he had. Whether it was a live Hoosier game at Assembly Hall, a March Madness game on CBS, or one of his nieces or beloved grandkids on the court, Bobby was there. He was always up for a quick pick up game and never shy to tell you man-to-man is better than zone. Amen! Bobby moved to Colorado after a diagnosis of cancer in 2013. He loved the mountains but his heart still remained in the southern hills of Indiana. Bobby passed away at his home after telling his grandkids goodnight and his kids by his side. Bobby is survived by his three kids, Onika and her husband Matthew Mayer, Zachary Crulo and Maggie Crulo; his two grandkids, Eden and Alan Mayer; and his loving sisters, Belle, Linda Richardson; his two brothers, Larry and Phil Crulo; and several nieces and nephews. She then married Hobson Crane on July 2, 1950, and he preceded her in death in 1984. Lola was an accomplished seamstress, making clothes since 1942. She opened Lola’s Drapery Service in 1966 and retired in 1996. Lola was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was involved in the Methodist Women’s Society and graduated from Smithville High School in 1935. June 09, 2018 Howard ‘Skip’ Smith Aug. 16, 1930 — June 7, 2018 Howard C. “Skip” Smith, 87, died Thursday, June 7, 2018, in his home after a fairly peaceful bout with cancer (until the last few weeks). He is survived by this wife of 64 years, June (Hamer) Smith from the “Spring Mill Hamer family,” here in Indiana. Skip was born August 16, 1930, to Howard and Lillian (Hansen) Smith in West Nyack, New York. He was inspired to become a farmer like his Grandfather (Hans Hansen, from Denmark) whom he spent much of his youth with, when he wasn’t hunting trapping or fishing. He began building his own registered Jersey herd when he was just sixteen. When he met his future wife, June Hamer “the goat girl” he gave her a Jersey calf for her sixteenth birthday, as she was also interested in farming. (He claims he was planning on getting the heifer back when they married.) In the middle of those early courting and farming years life was interrupted when Uncle Sam “invited” Skip to join the Korean War. He served two years in Korea as a Sergeant in the 107th Ordinance Artillery Repair Company. On March 20, 1954, 23 year old Skip and 18 year old June Rae Hamer were married and began farming and raising a family together. Their Jersey farm (which was eventually relocated to the beautiful Shawangunk Valley in Walkill, NY) wasn’t given an official name until their eldest daughter, Gale died. It was then called “Gale Farm” as a living, loving tribute to her. Gale’s funeral was on their third wedding anniversary. At that time they already had a second daughter and they would have three more daughters. Skip strove to be the best farmer he could be and he and June did very well showing their Jerseys at the various county fairs. They were also high in the state for milk production. Life was good but something was missing. They found that “something” individually in 1964. This is the year they both met Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. Life would never be the same. Feeling he had made the farm his “God” Skip felt called to give up farming and go into the ministry. Their new home became “Burnt Meadow Mission” and it is there where they held large home meetings. From there they moved to: “Teen Challenge Institute of Missions” where Skip began a farming program to help feed the students. At yet another Bible School in Ontario, Canada he shoveled coal through the winter months and planted crops in the spring (when not teaching). Eventually moving back to the United States he became a lay preacher at the “House of Prayer” in Stormville, New York while still maintaining a regular job. One of Skip’s favorite jobs was being a zoo keeper back in Ontario. It seems animals were never far from the Smith’s lives. In fact upon retiring he and June were blessed beyond measure with a small farm in Indiana (where their grown daughters and their families were already gathering). In the countryside of Campbellsburg (only miles from Spring Mill State Park) they began raising cattle, goats, chickens and an interesting array of pets. Life for the most part has been quite pleasant for this couple but now it’s time to say a difficult goodbye. Until we reunite, Skip has left behind: his wife, June Hamer Smith of Campbellsburg, four daughters: Dawn Tucker of Campbellsburg, LeeAnn Evans of Freetown, Bonny Booth of Columbus, and Robyn Brown (and husband, Chris) of Spencer and five Grandchildren: Justin and Brittany Booth, Levi and Caity Brown and Josiah Evans and their families including four Great Grandchildren; Zachariah, Bravery, Mercy Grace and Benjamin Booth. Brenda had worked at RCA, 3-D Department Store, Applacres, Borge Warner and retired as a line worker for Visteon in 1999. She was full of life and would do anything for anyone. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her family was everything to her, and she did her best to be at their activities. Even though she lost her accent, she enjoyed her afternoon tea with the other war-time English ladies who lived in Lawrence County. Her family and friends will miss her beautiful smile. Stanley Howard Mundy May 6, 1939 — June 1, 2018 Stanley Howard Mundy, 79, passed away Friday, June 1, 2018, at his home on Stonington Road near Mitchell. Born May 6, 1939, in Martin County, he was the son of Raymond and Christine (Burton) Mundy. He married Janet Ruth Tincher March 2, 1960, and she preceded him in death Sept. 27, 2001. He married Mary Jean Krise Jan. 4, 2003. Stanley graduated from Huron High School in 1957 where he played basketball and baseball. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 until 1963. During that time, he was stationed as a machinist on the USS Cony DD508 and participated in the Cuban Blockade for 45 days and the Bay of Pigs. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 250. Stanley retired from British Petroleum Refinery in Casper, Wyoming. He was an avid sportsman and gun collector. He was devoted to his grandchildren, Kerstin, Keaton, and Rissy. As his health declined during his last few years, his favorite pastime was attending gun shows with his son and brothers, and enjoying time with his pet dogs, Allie, Jin-Jin, and Kai. He was a Christian and a member of the Huron Baptist Church from his youth. Since returning to Indiana in 2005, he attended church services as his failing health allowed. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, a member of the Outdoor Sportsman Club and a former member of the Mitchell Lions Club.
