June 30, 2013 No obituaries reported June 29, 2013 Robert L. Charles Nov. 27, 1937 — June 28, 2013 Robert L. “Bob” Charles, 75, of Bedford, died at 2:25 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013 at Garden Villa. Born November 27, 1937 in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Ernest Emery and Marguerite (Link) Charles. He married Harriet Brown on March 19, 1965 and she survives. He was a graduate of the Bedford High School and a retired sheet metal worker. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Survivors include his wife, Harriet, of Bedford; a son, Robert Scott (Arlie) Charles of Bedford; three daughters, Andrea (Dan) Roberts of Houston, OH, Teresa Boruff and Tracey (Marc) Foddrill all of Bedford; four grandsons, Lance Adams and friend, Kayti Burks, William “Willie” Boruff; Andrew Roberts, Nevin Foddrill, three granddaughters, Amanda (Danny) Perry, Hannah Roberts and fiancé, Channon Martin and Tosha Charles; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, Eric and Trisha East; one brother, Jack (Ruthie) Charles of Bedford; two sisters, Gloria Arthur and Wanda (Ronnie) Weilbaker all of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Calvert Lee Duncan and a sister, Betty Spires. Funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 1 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Lewis Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Talbott Cemetery. Anna Mary Baker June 24, 1921 — June 28, 2013 Anna Mary Baker, 92, of Norman, Indiana, passed away at 3:15 am, on June 28, 2013 at the home of her son and daughter in-law, Johnny W. and Marie Baker. She graduated from Medora High School with the Class of 1939 and was a homemaker and faithful member of the Church of the Nazarene in Brownstown. She loved flowers, birds and crossword puzzles and playing games with her family. Her son David Baker and his wife Carolyn were very devoted in caring for her at Johhny and Marie’s home over the last two years. Born June 24, 1921 in Jackson County near Leesville, IN, she was a daughter of the late Ezra and Mabel (Flinn) Henderson. She married Johnny Roy Baker on February 3, 1940 in Bedford, Indiana and he preceded her in death on January 25, 2010. Survivors include: one daughter, Judith Ann Baker Green (Morris) Hanner; two sons, Johnny Wade (Marie) Baker and David Lee (Carolyn) Baker; two sisters, Inez Morrison and Faye Verble; 10 granchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one step great-great-grandson, and one great-great-granddaughter She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Gladys Henderson and two brothers, Doyle and Stanley Henderson, one son in-law, Clifford W. Green, and one great-granddaughter, Madeleine Marie Fischer. Funeral service will be Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 10 a.m. from the Brownstown Church of the Nazarene. Jeanette Leatherman Sept. 15, 1926 — June 27, 2013 Jeanette E. Leatherman, 86, passed away at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center. Born September 15, 1926, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Noble Oscar and Nellie Marie (Yaney) Fullen. She married James Leroy Leatherman December 22, 1942, and he preceded her in death April 25, 2010. Jeanette was a homemaker. Surviving: a son, Michael L. (Suzie) Leatherman, Mitchell; a granddaughter, Deanna Leatherman, and great-grandchildren, Kenny Leatherman and Lexie Moore. Her parents; husband; and brother, Harold Fullen, preceded her in death. Deckard Feb. 26, 1929 — June 27, 2013 Betty J. Deckard, 84, of Washington, Ind., died at 6:42 pm on Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Daviess Community Hospital. Born Feb. 26, 1929, in Casey Co., Kentucky, she was the daughter of William Finch and Addie (Wiltcher) Brown. She was retired from Ohio Valley Medical in Princeton, IN. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the V.F.W. Post No. 604 Auxiliary and the Eagles Lodge in Bloomington. Survivors include two sons, H. Preston Ross and L. Phillip Roberts both of Shoals, IN; a daughter, Vicki Reynolds of Palmyra, Ind; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Archie and Bobbie Brown and two in infancy. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. No calling hours are scheduled. He was born June 29, 1974 in Franklin, and was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School. He received his aviation mechanics degree from Vincennes University and was currently enrolled at IUPUI studying Motorsports Engineering, pursuing his love for racing. Al worked at Perry Brothers Auto Sales for 13 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors: wife Jammie (Ball) Thurman; two children, Emily and Elan; parents, Diana Thurman, Michael and Darla Thurman; siblings, Karen (John) McKinney, Joe (Pam) Thurman, Jennifer (Ben) McGibbon; nieces and nephews, Rob (Becca) Taylor, Kate Wilcox and Jarrod Melton. Porter, 89, of Bedford, died Wednesday at his residence surrounded by his family. Born Feb. 24, 1924 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Frank and Elsie (Jackson) Porter. He married Mary Frances Tarr on Oct. 1, 1950 and she survives. He was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the Class of 1942. He was a lifelong farmer and in the dairy business for 46 years. He was very handy and could fix most any farm machinery. He loved his granddaughters and enjoyed being around his great-grandchildren, and he also loved music, especially country and gospel. He wrote several songs; his first, “Back on my Tractor Again” in 1955 which was a parody on the Gene Autry song, “Back in the Saddle Again”. He was more recently known for his singing “The Long Black Train”. He had played at Mr. Gatti’s in Bedford and Crazy Joe’s. He enjoyed playing his guitar and singing at his church, New Hope Community. Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances, of Bedford; a daughter, Karen L. Dailey and husband, Robert, of Bedford; two granddaughters, Brooks Rush and husband, John, of Anderson, S.C., Becky Johnson and husband, Chris of Bedford; three great-grandchildren, Finley, Fallyn and Foster Johnson all of Bedford; one brother, Jack Porter of Goose Creek, S.C.; four nieces, Patty Smith of Indianapolis, Ruth Barrett and Judy Johnson both of Bedford, Debbie Mahoney of North Vernon; one nephew, Danny Dillon of Columbus; one sister-in-law, Ruth Dillon of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents, four half-brothers, Joe, Raleigh and Ervin Porter and Ed Holland. Elliott, 84, of Bedford, died at 7 a.m. on Wednesday at Garden Villa following a lengthy illness. Born Nov. 21, 1928 in Oolitic, he was the son of Lacy T. and Inez (Allison) Elliott. He married Gloria Scott on Sept. 4, 1949. He had worked at B & B Shoes, was a delivery man for Thompson Dairy in Bedford, worked at GE in Bloomington and had been an actor and model. He was a member of Oolitic Methodist Church, American Patriot Lodge No. 750 F & AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and the Indiana National Guard. Survivors include his wife, Gloria, of Bedford; a daughter, Donna Elliott of Ellettsville; two granddaughters, Amy Ikerd of Indianapolis and Leah Ikerd of Miami, Fla.; one great-grandchild and another on the way; a brother, Sherrill Elliott of Washington; three sisters, Nita Fern Pruett of Oolitic, Peggy White and Carol Clark both of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mildred Kessinger, Joy White and Ruth Ann King. Born Feb. 2, 1929, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Harlan and Emily (Houchin) Vincent. Mapha Jean had been employed at Philco-Ford, and General Motors. Anderson, 72, of Bedford, died at 12:55 a.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospice House. Born Jan. 13, 1941, in McRoberts, Ky., she was the daughter of Morgan and Katheryn (Bennet) Osborne. She married Stephen Anderson on June 30, 1961, and he survives. She was a graduate of Needmore High School with the Class of 1958. She was a homemaker and had worked at RCA, Trav-Ler Radio and Television Corp., and GM. She was a member of First Baptist Church and attended Englewood Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing cards with family and her friends, Robert and Bonnie Stalker, traveling and going out with Bob and Virginia Hayes. Survivors include her husband, Stephen; a son, Jeffery S. Anderson; a sister, Sandra Lovell; four nieces, Teresa, Bobbi Jo, Ashley and Madelyn Lovell; three nephews, Roger, Ernie and Rex Lovell; sister-in-law, Marsha Stauffer and husband, Sam; and a beloved cousin, Pruda Burcham. She was born Nov. 12, 1918, in Bloomfield, Ky., the daughter of Henderson H. and Amanda May Kays Hahn. She married Oscar Crouch on Jan. 2, 1947. He preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 2004. Mary was a homemaker and a member of Mount Horeb Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, Thomas Janes of Georgia; two daughters, Brenda Leach of Bedford and Diane Fleenor Pittenger of Louisville, Ky.; one sister, Geneva Richardson of Orleans; 10 grandchildren, Cathy Lee, Shelley Wigley, Lori Parker, Debbie Alton, Ryan James, Beth Thompson, Marla Hoke, Brian Morgan, Doug Morgan and Melissa Anderson; and 18 great-grandchildren. Wilfong Jan. 15, 1944 — June 16, 2013 Tommy Ray Wilfong, a 1962 graduate of Mitchell High School, moved to Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Fathers Day. Tom lost his battle with colon cancer but won his victory in Jesus. He is whole and free today in Heaven. He and wife Gloria have been living in San Diego the past six years. They were married 48 years and have 3 children. Surviving in Indiana are their daughter, Michele Smith of Martinsville; and, in Mitchell, granddaughter, Stephanie Stalker. The children in California are daughter, Heather Beltran and son, Tommy Wilfong. They have five grandchildren and two great-grandsons. He was a wonderful husband, father and Papaw. Tom enjoyed fishing in Indiana, Florida and California. He was a taxidermist for many years in Ramona, Calif. Services with military honors will be held at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. Born Jan. 21, 1935, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Linza and Gathelene (Owen) Pridemore. He married Gloria Wigley October 30, 1964. He had been employed at Spring Mill State Park as a painter and during his retirement, he was a security guard for Williams Investigations. Donald was a U.S. Marine veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post No. 250. Surviving are his wife, Gloria Pridemore of Huron; daughter, Angela Duncan of Rockville; grandson, Christopher Lindsey and companion, Gina Higgs of Mitchell; grandchildren by love, Aaron Grissom and Cortney Grissom; great-grandchildren, Andrew and Hannah Lindsey; brother, Lowell Curtis “Gabe” Pridemore of Mitchell; sisters, Cora Pearl Keller and Sue Conolty, both of Fond du Lac, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews. Born Feb. 19, 1945, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Ray William and Myrtle Mae (Blythe) Moore. She married the Rev. Gary Stevens on Jan. 6, 1964, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2009. She had worked at the Hub Restaurant in Bedford for over 15 years and also cleaned homes. She was a member of the New Hope Christian Church. She was born on Feb. 21, 1947, in Elkhart; she was the daughter of Bernard and Edith “Pat” (Piedmont) Pletcher. Helen was an insurance agent for Farmers Insurance. She married Kenny Kinder on Dec. 5, 2003. Helen is survived by her loving husband Kenny Kinder of Bedford; two sons, Jim Allgood of Bedford and Matt Durham of Stinesville; two brothers, Harry West and Barney Pletcher both of Bloomington; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one aunt, Nancy Aurand and one uncle, Chuck Weber, both of Elkhart. Born May 25, 1927, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Warren J. and Pearl (Helm) Wright. She was formerly married to Robert C. Connell and he preceded her in death. She was cafeteria manager at Burris School for 32 years. Wilma was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and served as organist for 50 years; she was also a member of United Methodist Women. Surviving are children, Robert L. (Phyllis) Connell of Mitchell, Marilyn (Mike) Gifford of Bedford, JoAnne Connell Roberts of Mitchell, Susie E. Wilson of Mitchell and Steve C. Hudson Sept. 13, 1961 — June 8, 2013 Carla Marie (Kirkman) Hudson, 51, passed away in Oklahoma City, Okla., on June 8. She was born Sept. 13, 1961, in Jacksonville, Fla., raised in Bedford, and spent the past 30 years making a home in Norman, Okla., where she worked as a dental lab technician. Carla was known for having a mischievous sense of humor and loved to tease her family and friends with quick witted jabs and playful stunts such as jumping out from around a corner to scare them. She made an art of extending take-out Chinese food containers to astronomical proportions. The holidays were special to Carla, particularly Christmas, because these were treasured opportunities to spend time with those she held most dear. Carla had a heart of gold — those whom she befriended became a part of her extended family — and all knew they were loved. Carla is survived by her husband, Michael Hudson; three children, Brandy Martin, Barbara (Barbie) Held, and Alexis Kirkman; six grandchildren, Adrian Martin, Joe Benard, Acacia Benard, Ny’Asia Benard, Luke Held, and Eva Held; three brothers, Charles Kirkman, Joseph Kirkman and John Kirkman; two sisters, Mrs. Robert W. (Kathleen) Dalton, and Mrs. Joseph (Karen) Parker; numerous nieces and nephews; friends old and new; and a dear personal friend, Darrell Goebel. Irene Campbell June 13, 1920 — June 14, 2013 Irene Campbell, 93, of Bloomington, became free of illness and pain and entered eternal peace on June 14, 2013, at Garden Villa Health Care Center. She was born on June 13, 1920, in Story, IN, the daughter of Charles and Rhoda (Parsley) Foreman. In early life, Irene worked at Home Laundry and as a cook at Indiana University. She was an ordinary person that used her knowledge from the Great Depression on how to live frugally. She married Virgil (Bud) Thomas Campbell, Army Sgt. of the I Company that guarded General Patton’s supplies during WWII and liberated a concentration camp. She became a homemaker where she shined up her house, and helped manage a 200-acre farm in Monroe County, now covered by Lake Monroe. She made cottage cheese, chocolate pies, doughnuts and canned the best veggies, tomatoes, relish, pickles and jelly you’ll ever have in your belly. The rhubarb she grew in her garden made her famous. She was an excellent seamstress and did beautiful quilting. To pass the time, she watched soap operas. Irene was a member of the Knightridge Pentecostal Church and left us dividends of all the prayers she said in her life. Survivors include one daughter, Beverly (Michael) DeFord of Unionville; one son, Dennis Campbell of Heltonville; three grandchildren, Thomas (Lorene) DeFord of Rice, MN, Misty Campbell of Bloomington, and Cody (Susan) Campbell of Bedford. June 14, 2013 Lester E. Hickerson April 25, 1924 — June 7, 2013 Former Bedford resident Lester E. Hickerson, 89, passed away on June 7 at his home in Hot Springs, Ark. He was born on April 25, 1924, in Lavaca, Ark., to Lester Hays and Bella Jo Hickerson. Lester moved his family from Hot Springs to Bedford in 1965 to continue his career with the Central Foundry (now PowerTrain) Division of General Motors (GM) after the Arkansas operation closed. He retired from GM in 1978 as a General Supervisor and subsequently returned to his boyhood home. A self-educated man, Lester was a voracious reader, and enrolled in the local Hot Springs Junior College upon retirement. He also began to participate in long distance running at that time. Lester won numerous age group awards during his almost 20 years of participation in the sport. Among the many highlights of his running career was the opportunity to participate in local races with his sons and grandsons. He eventually had to retire from the sport given deteriorating health. Lester was a decorated World War II veteran and spent three years in the Pacific Theater as a member of The Army Combat Engineers. He was a long time member of Oaklawn United Methodist Church in Hot Springs. Lester was predeceased by his first wife, Vivian Love Hickerson; one son, Robert Hays Hickerson; and one brother Gene Hickerson. Survivors include his wife, Martha Poe Hickerson of Hot Springs; one daughter, Sandi (Joe) Jordan of Hot Springs; one son, David (Elin) Hickerson of Oak Park, Ill.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was born in Lawrence County on Aug. 26, 1928, to Elmer Oren and Barbara Alice (Gwin) Blackwell. Morris married Ruth Shields in Bloomington on April 21, 2000, and she survives. Morris worked many jobs through the years including Clark Electric in Bedford, Boeing Airplane Co. in Wichita, Kan., and Seattle, Wash., Mayflower Moving Co., Edgewood High School, and as a bus driver at Monroe County Schools and Bloomington Shuttle Co. He was a graduate of Needmore High School in 1946. He was an avid carpenter and woodworker. Kathyrn DePierre Nov. 22, 1921 — May 31, 2013 Kathyrn “Katie” DePierre, 91, passed away following a brief illness on May 31, in Safety Harbor, Fla. She was the beloved wife of Fred DePierre for more than 70 years. Katie was born in Montgomery, Ind., on Nov. 22, 1921, the daughter of Jonas and Rose Graber. She was a graduate of Montgomery High School. She married her husband, Fred, on Dec. 2, 1942, and almost immediately the young couple was separated by Fred’s deployment into World War II. Upon Freddie’s return from the war in 1945, they made their happy home in Bedford. For more than 20 years Katie was the Office Manager of the Reuter Insurance Agency in Bedford. Upon Fred’s retirement in 1973, the young and active couple set off for new adventures in sunny Florida, eventually settling in Safety Harbor. Katie enjoyed golfing and bowling, and was an active member in her sorority. She and her husband were faithful and dedicated, founding members of the North Bay Community Church in Safety Harbor. Katie was devoted to her family, a loving wife, daughter, sister, and aunt. Her loyalty and support knew no bounds, if you needed her she was there. She was generous, kind, and sweet, with a smile that made you feel loved and safe always. She had a keen intelligence. For those of us who shared her renowned custard pie, it was as much a testament to her love for us, which was abounding, as to her skill and talent in the kitchen. She is irreplaceable. She is survived by her husband Fred and her much loved sister and brother Patty Spera (Dominic) and Paul Graber (Jeannie), and many nieces and nephews who adored her. Thacker, 85, passed away quietly in Indianapolis on Sunday. Born April 11, 1928, in Crystal, he was the son of Wallace and Lowell (Cave) Thacker, both of whom preceded him in death. He had the good fortune to be married to two extraordinary women, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Mary Alice Hall on Sept. 27, 1956, and later married Juanita “Jay” Fine on Dec. 28, 1994. He was an accomplished athlete as a young man, setting numerous records at Dubois High School. He remained a loyal Jeep, closely following the highs and lows of both the boys and girls basketball teams. He served in the Army from 1946-1950 and returned to earn a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and the Indiana State Teacher’s College. He worked as the Controller for Triangle & Leahy Plumbing and Heating until his retirement in 1990. Following retirement, he became a realtor working for Century 21 and later Williams Carpenter Realty in Bedford until 2007. While in Bedford, he was active in the Elks Lodge, served on the Dunn Memorial Hospital Foundation Board of Directors and was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church. He loved the Indiana Hoosiers and the Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed golf, gardening, travel and walking the beach on Hilton Head Island. Ginger Leah Hert May 15, 1961 — May 15, 2013 Ginger, fondly known as “Sid,” was born May 15, 1961, in Bedford. She traveled throughout the United States and finally settled in Bradenton, Fla. She had a flair for style and worked as a retail manager for many years. Thirteen years ago she reunited with her high school love and was remarried. Sid had an adventurous spirit that was contagious and carried her through all of life’s hardships. To her daughter, Sid was not only a mother, but a best friend. On May 15, 2013, at the exact age of 52, Sid’s spirit joined the angels. She leaves behind her husband, Tom Hert; daughter, Amber-Lyn Griffen; mother, Jean; sister, Julie; her nieces and nephew; her adoring grandchildren, Franklin and Sidney; and countless other family and friends. Robert was born on Sept. 3, 1939, in Bedford to Kenneth Evertt and Mary Elizabeth (Cropp) Ingle. He married Bonnie Brown on March 6, 1959, at the Bedford Free Methodist Church and she survives. Bob retired from the Indiana National Guard as OMS Chief; he retired from the civil service on Dec. 31, 1995, and from the U.S. Army on June 16, 1997. He was a member of the Bedford American Legion Post No. 33; he served many years on the Honor Guard, & Member of Crossroads Community Church. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Bonnie (Brown) Ingle of Bedford, one son, Steven L. Ingle and wife Sharon of Medora; two daughters, Jennifer Ingle Fetten and husband John of Clinton, N.J., and Victoria Ingle Bridwell and husband Gary of Bedford, 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Dick Ingle and wife Carolyn Sue of Florida, Don Ingle and wife Lana of Bedford, and Jim Ingle and wife Linda of Indianapolis; and one sister-in-law, Martha Ingle of Bedford.
