Gary InmanGary Inman, 42, of Bedford, died July 25 in Lawrence County. Mr. Inman is survived by his mother, Donna Inman of Bedford; sisters, Deonna (Jerry) Hattabaugh of Mitchell and Michelle (Scott) Sanders of Williams; brothers, Scott (Alecia) Simmerman of Bedford and Matthew (Candace) Inman of Bedford; grandmother, Betty Lewis of Williams; and seven nieces and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Gerry Neal Inman; paternal grandfather, Hillard Inman; paternal grandmother, Betty Skirvin; and maternal grandfather, Roy Lewis. Dasan E. SpiresMarch 15, 1979 — July 28, 2012 Dasan E. Spires, 33, of Heltonville, passed away on Saturday from injuries sustained in an auto accident which also claimed the life of his fiancée Laura Duncan. Born March 15, 1979, in Bedford, he was the son of Michael and Christie (Harrell) Spires. He was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School with the Class of 1998. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he received a commendation medal for extinguishing a fire which threatened a plane and its pilot. He owned A-1 Excavating and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union Local No. 181 and of the Baptist faith. He loved his family and friends, riding his Harley, boating, weightlifting, the outdoors and caring for his dogs. Survivors include his mother, Christie, of Heltonville; his father, Michael, of Bedford; two brothers, Ty Spires of Heltonville and Cam Spires and wife Amy of Springville; a niece, Chloe Spires; nephews, Caden and Casen Spires; aunt, Donna Evans of Heltonville; uncles, Greg Spires of Bloomington, Steven Spires and wife Cora of Bedford, Tracy Spires and wife Mary of Colorado and Tom Harrell and wife Rhonda of Lexington, Ky.; several cousins; and his grandmother, Helen Spires of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Herbert Dale and Violet Harrell; and his paternal grandfather, Charles Eugene Spires. Eunice Marie ReuterMarch 24, 1920 — July 30, 2012 Eunice Marie Harp Reuter, 92, of Bedford, died at 5:20 a.m. on Monday at StoneBridge Health Campus. Born March 24, 1920, in Matton, Ill., she was the daughter of Charlie and Zira (George) Harp. She married Charles D. Reuter on May 27, 1938 and he preceded her in death on June 1, 1990. She was a graduate of Marion College in Marion, and a member of the First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and teacher. She and Charles traveled to Israel twice. She addressed the Indiana joint legislature in the 1970s. Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Jane Crandall and husband George of Magnolia Springs, Ala., and Jo Hannah Edwards and husband Ronald of Bedford; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Crandall of Chicago, Amy Baratta and husband, Joe of New Jersey, Andrew Edwards and wife Karen of Bloomington and Hannah Winegar and husband Jason of Charlestown, S.C.; six great-grandchildren, Alex and Caroline Baratta, Abby and Lilly Winegar, and Charlie and Emily Edwards; one sister, Helen Hall of North Carolina; and one brother, Charles Harp Jr. of Nevada. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one sister, Hazel Flinn. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Friday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Ava Nell HortonMarch 25, 1935 — June 26, 2012 Ava Nell Mullis Horton, 77, passed away at 1:15 p.m. on Thursday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born March 25, 1935, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Roy and Emma Faye (Richardson) Daugherty. Surviving are her children, Michelle Clay (John) of Indianapolis, Debbie Edwards (David) of Bedford, and Charles Alan Mullis (Diana L. Taylor) of Bedford; grandchildren, Shae Mullis of Bedford, Heather Staggs of Bloomington, Amy Wyatt of Oolitic, and Kyle Hamilton of Seattle, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Taylor Staggs, Sophie Staggs, Keaton Staggs (they are children of Heather Staggs), and Robbie Wyatt (son of Amy Wyatt), one brother George Daugherty of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, David, Graden and Noel Daugherty; and sisters, Alene Daugherty, Annebell Kern and Joyce MacDonald. Ava was graduated Bedford High School in 1953. She was homemaker and also worked at RCA in Bloomington, Cook Group in Bloomington and Edgewood Pharmacy. She was a member of the Bedford Baptist Temple, She was a caring, loving mother and grandmother. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Mary Alice CazeeNov. 8, 1922 — July 27, 2012 Mary Alice Cazee, 89, of Jasonville, passed away at 11:30 a.m. on Friday at Union Hospital Terre Haute. She was born Nov. 8, 1922, in Williams, to Earl Dixon Kern and Minnie (Lyons) Kern. Mary married William Fredrick Cazee on May 1, 1939, and he passed away on Dec. 15, 1967. Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Vickie Cazee of Farmersburg, Jack S. Cazee of Jasonville, and Donald E. and Teresa Cazee of Jasonville; grandchildren, Brent Cazee, Brad Cazee, Ronn Cazee, Buddy Cazee, Jackie Cazee, Sandy Swan, Suzie Cazee, Michael Fenwick, Tony Cazee and Chris Deckard; many great-grandchildren; brother, Raymond Kern of Paragon; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son; Ronald Dean Cazee; sisters, Dorothy Fields and Blanche Schoffstall; brother, Richard Kern; and aunt, Martha Tannehill. Mary had worked as a nurse’s aide at Shakamak Good Samaritan Nursing Center. She was a member of Lebanon Baptist Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Michael W. Jerry Rollins Dec. 4, 1939 — July 27, 2012 Jerry Rollins, 72, of Bedford, died at 11:10 a.m. on Friday, July 27, 2012, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital. Born Dec. 4, 1939, in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Homer and Coletia (Turner) Rollins. He married Pam Franklin on June 30, 1958, and she survives. Jerry was a 1958 graduate of Needmore High School and was a member of Avoca Baptist Church. He was a heavy equipment operator at Stone City construction and the City of Bedford. Survivors include his wife, Pam, of Bedford; one daughter, Gaytha (Brett) Arnold of Muncie; three grandchildren, Brody, Libby and Alex Arnold, all of Muncie; two great-grandchildren, Dallas and Blakeleigh; one brother, Denny (Jayne) Rollins of Bloomington; two sisters, Bonnie Poindexter of Odon and Penny (Darrell) Kindred of Connersville; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Becky Francis of Davie, FL; a sister-in-law, Nancy Carpenter of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles “Bud” Rollins. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 30 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Jim McDowell officiating. Frederick E. MitchellJan. 8, 1927 — July 27, 2012 Frederick Earl “Fred” Mitchell, 85, Bedford, left this earth to see his Heavenly Father on Friday morning, July 27, 2012. Fred was born Jan. 8, 1927, west of Bedford, at what is now 8488 State Road 158, to John and Leona (Hicks) Mitchell. He first married Mary Jean George on July 5, 1947, and she preceded him in death in December of 1981. They had three children, Rick A. (Judy) Mitchell, Pamela E. (Dan) Deckard, both who survive him in Bedford, and Jeffrey Lyle who was stillborn. He later married Marian A. (Plake) George on Nov. 8, 1983, and her children, Jackie (Mike) Kuster, and Dale Earl George, both of Bedford, joined his family. There are five grandchildren, Derek (Lauralee) Mitchell, Melanie (Jeff) Johnson, Matthew Deckard, Jason Kuster and Brian (Erin) Kuster. He is also survived by several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Fred was the last of six brothers, Glen, John, Wayne, Keith and Richard, and one sister, Eileen Dillon. Fred was a graduate of Fayetteville High School. He was a member of UAW Local 440, and a US Army Veteran. He retired from G.M. Central Foundry in 1982. He then served many mission projects in Mexico after moving to Brownsville, Texas, where he was an elder at Brownsville Central Christian Church. He had also served as elder of New Union Christian Church. He loved God’s Kingdom on this earth, and is now at home in God’s Heavenly Kingdom. Fred’s farewell ceremony will be at 2 p.m. on Monday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Brother Mike French officiating, with burial in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Mary Frances WilliamsonSept. 11, 1916 — July 27, 2012 Mary Frances Williamson, 95, of Bedford, and formerly of Taylor Mill, Ky., died at 8:20 a.m. Friday. She was born on Sept. 11, 1916, in Kenton County, Ky. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry W. Bird and Grace E. (Stephens); husband Edgar Williamson (married 1955); and son Jerry Baker. For many year she was a beautician and in 1981 she retired from South Western Publishing Company in Cincinnati. She was a charter member of Lakeside Christian Church, Lakeside Park, Ky., and currently attended First Christian Church in Bedford, Ind. She was a member of Daughters of America Kenton Council No. 9, Past State Counselor; Order of the Amaranth, Past Royal Matron of Queen Ester Court No. 21; Order of the Eastern Star Rosebud Chapter No. 39; Covington Shrine No. 10; and Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. Surviving is her daughter: Nancy (Donald) Mains (Bedford, Ind.); grandchildren Donald Mains Jr. (Brownsburg, Ind.), Melinda Mains (Indianapolis), Christopher (Kirsten) Mains (Avon, Ind.), Scott Baker (Cincinnati), and Troy (Cathy) Baker (Milford, Ohio); and seven great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Monday with the funeral service to follow at 7 p.m. in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with the Rev. Robert Dailey officiating. Clarence E. KernsApril 25, 1929 — July 26, 2012 Clarence Edward Kerns, 83, Mitchell, passed away at 10:50 a.m. Thursday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital. Born April 25, 1929, in Martin County, he was the son of Alton and Lillian (Bauer) Kerns. He married Barbara Smith, Feb. 21, 1953. He was employed by B&O Railroad as a Signal Maintainer until his retirement in 1987 after 40 years of service, and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen. Clarence graduated from Shoals High School in 1947 and was a member of White River Masonic Lodge No. 332 F&AM. He was a member of the Mitchell Presbyterian Church and had been an elder and served on many boards at the church. He also served as a Mitchell City Councilman during the years of 1969-1971, and was active in the Little League Program. Clarence was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 250. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Kerns of Mitchell; daughter, Clarice Cooper and husband Terry of Orleans; son, Vance Kerns and wife, Angela of Bedford; three grandchildren, Ashley (Luke) Gangloff of Logansport, and Jarrett Kerns and Alesha Kerns, both of Bedford; one great-grandson, Jackson Cooper Gangloff of Logansport; and sisters, Betty Crays of French Lick and Phyllis Wininger and Maryrose Risner, both of Crawfordsville His parents; and brothers, George Walter Kerns and Ralph Alton Kerns, preceded him in death. Born April 19, 1959, in Columbus, he was the son of Owen Dale and Ruth E. (Luttrell) Stickles. He was a construction worker. Survivors include his father, Owen Dale Stickles of Columbus and a daughter, Katrina Smith of Texas. He was preceded in death by his mother; two brothers, Michael D. and Owen Dale II. Emily J. WiningerOct. 11, 1927 — July 25, 2012 Emily Jane Wininger, 84, of Orleans, died Wednesday at Garden Villa in Bedford. She was born Oct. 11, 1927, in Paoli, the daughter of Arthur Bex Owens and Ethel Gladys Newlin Owens. She graduated from Paoli High School and later worked and retired from Bell Telephone. She married Charles “Ed” Wininger on Dec. 21, 1946 and he died April 3, 2010. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Jean (Darrell) Stone and Cheryl (Sam) Moore all of Orleans; there are nine grandchildren, Dawn Morrison, Denise Porter, Damon Jones, Charles Baker III, Amanda Brooks, Susan Sharp, Brian Moore, Bradley Moore and Bobby Moore; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Debra; five brothers; and five sisters. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Friday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans. Evalou E. McConnellMay 15, 1950 — July 23, 2012 Evalou Ellen “Ellie” McConnell, 62, of Bedford, passed away on Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital surrounded by her family. Evalou was born on May 15, 1950, in Bloomington and was the daughter of Merle V. and Mary C. (Altop) McConnell. She was retired from Cook Inc. After retirement she obtained her real estate license and worked for F.C. Tucker and other agencies in Bloomington. She recently worked at the American Red Cross in Bedford and was a member of the Eagles Women’s Auxiliary. She would see good in everyone she met and devoted her life to spending time with her family. She loved watching her grandchildren sing karaoke. Survivors include her son Anthony “Tony” Eads of Bloomington; and grandchildren Taylor, Alex, Jordan, Jared, Chloe and Nichelle. Preceding her in death were her parents; and one brother, Paul McConnell. A memorial service is planned for a later date. The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard is handling arrangements. Ozella J. MathisMay 12, 1919 — July 22, 2012 Ozella J. Mathis, 93, of Russell, Pa., formerly of Bedford, died at 11:10 a.m. Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Stonebridge Health Campus, Bedford. Born May 12, 1919. in Tunnelton, she was the daughter of Clifford and Ruth (Worthington) Scott. She married Bill Mathis on May 13, 1939, and he preceded her in death of Nov. 26, 1990. She was the retired Postmaster of Oolitic and a member of the American Business Women Associates. Surviving are three daughters, Nedra Hert of Russell, Pa., Darlene (John) Bough and Linda (Robert) Hackler, both of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Doug (Karen) Hert and Randy Hert, both of Russell, Pa., Terri (Dave) Ludwig of Warren, Pa., Noelle (Wes) Clouse of Noblesville, Scott (Amy) Bough and Curt Hackler, both of Bedford, David (Companion Dawn) Hackler of Springville and Karen Hackler of Bedford; 10 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Tom Scott of Michigan; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Michael L. McNeelyFeb. 22, 1945 — July 22, 2012 Michael Lee McNeely, 67, Mitchell, passed away at 8:10 p.m. Sunday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital. Born Feb. 22, 1945, in Mitchell, he was the son of Ivis and Mary Ann (Baughman) McNeely. He retired from Verizon Phone Company in 2003. Mike was a US Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post No. 250. He graduated in 1963 from Mitchell High School. Surviving are daughter, Natalie (Alexander) Fraser of Marshall, Ill.; grandchildren, Gabriele and Gage Fraser; brother, Hugh McNeely of Indianapolis; sisters, Sujane Goldsby of Mitchell, Mona McNeely of Orleans and Joan Groene of Indianapolis. His parents and sisters, Betty Tolbert and Marilyn Riley, preceded him in death. William J. LeeFeb. 2, 1929 — July 23, 2012 William “Bill” James Lee, 83, Shoals, passed away peacefully at 5:09 a.m. Monday with his wife Emily and daughter Diana by his side. Bill was born Feb. 2, 1929, in Lost River Township to Walter Lee and Edna (Ragsdale) Lee Wolf. He married Emily B. Lindley on Oct. 13, 1950, at the Methodist church parsonage in Bedford, and she survives. He will be deeply missed by his family, including wife, Emily of Shoals; daughters, Diana (Roy) Key of Bedford, Billie Kay (Bruce) Terwiske of Ireland, and Shelly (Ron) Allbright of French Lick; three grandsons, Barrett Lee Allbright, Brent Terry and Bryant Trambaugh; seven great-grandchildren, Cassandra and Nicole Terry, David and Daniel Allbright, and Kayla, Carson and Coen Trambaugh; and one halfbrother, Lester Wolf of Olney, Ill. Bill was very active within the Shoals community. He was a 57-year member of the White River Masonic Lodge F&AM. He was a former precinct committeeman for Southeast Halbert Township; served on the Advisory Board for Lost River Township, and was a proud member for 59 years of Shoals American Legion Post No. 61 and VFW Post No. 8589. He served his country from 1950-52 in the United States Army during the Korean War in the 101st Signal Battalion as a pole lineman behind enemy lines. He retired from National Gypsum Company after 30 years of service, and also worked for the Indiana Department of Transportation and Crane Ammunition Depot following his retirement. He was a 1948 graduate of Shoals High School and a member of Waggoner Chapel. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals with the Rev. Kevin Quinn officiating. Burial will follow in Waggoner Chapel Cemetery with graveside rites by Shoals American Legion Post No. 61. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. He married Sharon Kay Moore on July 6, 1978, and she preceded him in death on April 15, 2007. He had worked in fuel sensor assembly at Ford/Visteon, Bedford, retiring in 2004. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bedford and had also attended Bethel Country Church in Oolitic and Body of Christ in Bedford. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 14, F&AM of Bedford and also had served in the Indiana National Guard. Surviving are one daughter, Heather Thoroman of Bedford; two sisters, Phyllis (Gene) Newton of Indianapolis, and D. J. Hillenburg of Denver, Colo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. SouthernOct. 9, 1948 — July 15, 2012 Gloria Jean Southern, known to her loving family and friends as “Debbie,” passed away Sunday at her home in New Boston, Mich., after a courageous battle with cancer. Debbie was born Oct. 9, 1948, in Indianapolis to Hillus and Joyce (Feld) Gaulden. She graduated from Wood High School in Indianapolis in 1967. She was married to Stephen Southern of Bedford on April 19, 1969. Debbie worked many years in data entry and served in the Indiana National Guard before becoming a full-time homemaker. Debbie was known to all for her contagious smile and her ability to make others happy, especially young children and the elderly. She enjoyed bingo where she seldom won and fishing where she always caught the fish (but let it go). Debbie also enjoyed life at Whitney Beach on Longboat Key, Fla., where her family has created countless memories over the last 20 years. She was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Gaulden; and Dayna Browder, her younger sister. Surviving her are a brother, Dennis Gaulden of Richmond, Va.; her husband, Stephen Southern of New Boston, Mich.; her son, Justin Southern of Chesterton; her daughter, Shannon LaPointe of Southgate, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Logan Southern, Dylan Southern and Johnny LaPointe. Dorothy M. SummersOct. 2, 1925 — July 15, 2012 Dorothy M. Summers, of Bedford, died peacefully on Sunday. She was 86 years old. Dorothy was the beloved wife of the late Jack Summers, the daughter of the late Ray and Leona Smith and the sister of the late Clarence (Jean) Smith. Dorothy was the devoted and loving mother of three daughters. In the past several years, Dorothy devoted her untiring attention and affection to the care of her eldest daughter, the late Derenda Baker, who had long battled the disabling effects of an injury incurred as a young woman. Dorothy has now followed Derenda to heaven. Dorothy is survived by two daughters, Teresa Torphy of Bedford and Lydia (Michael) Jarboe of Pittsburgh, Pa. Dorothy is also survived by eight grandchildren, Twilla (Kevin) Pugh, Troy (Cathy) Baker, Treva (Mike) App, Cindy (Patrick) Nycz, Debbie (Joel) Housel, Brad Torphy, Joseph (Sarah) Jarboe and Jillian Jarboe; and her great-grandchildren, Cody, Thomas, Kade, Josh, Elliott, Jack, Tyler, Charlie, Emma and Brendan. Dorothy grew up on a farm outside of Mitchell and was always proud of her rural upbringing. Dorothy enjoyed gardening, spiritual music and simple things, but found her greatest enjoyment in her family. She attended Faith Mission Church and was a proficient seamstress and an accomplished cook. Yet, it was her dedication and devotion to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren that were foremost among her many endearing achievements. In addition to her loving and nurturing ways, she was a vital and supportive role model, who blended wit, wisdom and insight with a calm and comforting manner that would always inspire and console. Little on July 13, 1946, in Floyd County and he survives. She was the manager of Woolworth’s Restaurant in Bedford for 20 years until her retirement. Winnifred was a US Air Force veteran. Judith JacobsNov. 14, 1942 — July 10, 2012 Judith Marlene Jacobs, 69, of Bloomington and formerly of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the IU Health Hospice House. Judith was born in Detroit, Mich., and was the daughter of Maurice and Sylvia Blumenthal. She graduated from Henry Ford High School and completed four years at Wayne State University where she earned a teaching degree. She earned her master’s degree from Indiana University with a specialization in Language Arts. Judith married Marshall Jacobs on June 14, 1964. She moved to Indiana and taught school for 46 years, mostly first grade, at Stalker Elementary in Bedford. She retired from teaching in 2008. Judith and Marshall moved to Bloomington in August 2009. In addition to her teaching career, Judith (and Marshall) were active members of Little Theatre of Bedford. Judith was an avid gardener and regularly walked three or four miles a day. She also enjoyed reading and cooking. Judith touched the lives of many, many school children in Lawrence County and has a long list of dedicated friends in the community. She will be long remembered and sorrowfully missed. She (and Marshall) were members of Congregation Beth Shalom. She served on the board of directors on more than one occasion and was president of the Congregation for one three-year term. Judith was diagnosed with brain cancer in September 2011. She battled valiantly until she succumbed to complications of the cancer resulting in pneumonia. Judith is survived by her only sibling, Elaine Horowitz of Huntington Woods, Mich., her brother-in-law Marvin Horowitz and two nephews Ethan and Aaron Horowitz. Her husband of 48 years, Marshall Jacobs, also survives. Services will be 4 p.m. Thursday, July 12, 2012, at Congregation Beth Shalom with Rabbi Brian Besser. She traveled with the ministry to Australia, Tonga Islands, the Pacific, and England. Virginia would teach women’s groups during the revivals conducted by her husband throughout 43 states since 1980. She was affiliated with the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel in Los Angeles, Calif., where her husband was ordained. Virginia received the Lord Jesus at the early age of 8 and later received the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Rev. Born Nov. 2, 1953, in Lexington, Ky., she was the daughter of Lorin “Doc” and Marie (Cook) Clinkscales. Johnie had been employed at Contech and also Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell. She graduated from Carroll County High School in Kentucky in 1971. She was a majorette on the baton twirling team. She was an auxiliary member of the American Legion Post No. 250 and a lifetime charter member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsmen’s Club. Johnie was a great golfer and could beat most men at the sport. She enjoyed fishing, playing piano, reading, crocheting, watching her grandsons play sports, and loved her animals. She was a very detailed, organized lady who took pride in everything she did. She loved to travel with her husband and they truly enjoyed their life together. She was a devoted, supportive and wonderful wife, mom, mamaw, and friend who loved those around her unconditionally. Johnie’s life in heaven will cause a lot of void in each of our hearts. There are no words to express how much she will be missed. She is survived by her loving and wonderful husband of 20 years, Richard “Rick” Van Hoy of Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, “Bud” Hartzell and her son, Doug Hartzell, in 1997. She was born on Valentine’s Day in 1940 to Andrew and Alta May Rogers in Bloomington. Rosemary worked in her early years for Cook Inc. in Bloomington and then later in life as a nursing coordinator for Bloomington Hospital. She was of the Pentecostal faith. She will be sadly missed by those she leaves behind. They include her son Steven Reeves and his wife Julia of Solsberry; son Joseph Reeves and his wife Pam of Heltonville; son James Reeves of Bloomington; daughter Lisa Waters and her husband Jeff of Solsberry; daughter Amy Gaither and her husband David of Bedford; grandchildren Kristi Jo Shields, Jodie Lynn Reeves, Eric Steven Reeves, Courtney Waters, Jennifer Waters, David James Gaither; and great-grandchildren Kage and Kora Waters. She was born on New Year’s Day in 1962 to John Wesley and June Eads Payne in Bloomington. Tammy was a 1980 graduate of Bloomington High School North and worked through the years at Kroger, G.E., Sarkes-Tarzian and helped with family farming as well. She was a member of the Bloomington Chapter of the O.E.S. Tammy leaves behind her husband, Bryan Richard McClung of Bedford; her daughter, Shelby Rebecca McClung; parents, John and June Payne of Bloomington; sisters, Teresa St. John and husband Fred, Ladonna Payne and Ginger Payne Adkisson and her companion Donnie, all from Bloomington; as well as several nieces, nephews and great-nieces. Ethan UnderwoodAug. 15, 1993 — July 5, 2012 Ethan Lee Underwood, 18, of Medora, died at 6:50 p.m. Thursday in Medora. He was a member of Driftwood Christian Church and attended Brownstown Christian Church. He was employed with Rose Acre Farms as a Dry Goods Manager. Ethan was a 10 year member of 4-H and loved showing cattle & sheep. He spent most of his time doing farm work and mechanical work and enjoyed hanging with his Papaw Bernie. He was a 2012 graduated from Brownstown Central High School and was a member of FFA and the Booster Club. Everyone who has spoken of Ethan, says he was a sweet, hard working guy. He was born Aug. 15, 1993, in Bedford, to Timothy (Deb) Underwood of Seymour and Karen Branaman Underwood of Medora, who survive. He is also survived by two brothers, Justyn and Logan Underwood, both of Medora; three step-siblings, Michelle and Brant Ross and Nikki Larson, all of Seymour; maternal grandparents, Bernard and Delores Branaman of Medora; aunts and uncles, Tammy and Bill Wilson of Medora, Dasha and Todd Meadows of Bedford, Michelle and David Reynolds of Norman, and Doug and Joann Branaman of Medora; and several cousins.. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Nolan and Maralan “Jody” Underwood. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Brownstown Christian Church with the Rev. Winnie F. KirkmanJan. 12, 1925 — July 3, 2012 Winnie F. Kirkman, 87, of Plainfield, died at 2:10 p.m. on Tuesday at the Plainfield Health Care Center. Born Jan. 12, 1925 in Pulaski County, Ky., she was the daughter of Thomas Fount and Mary Emma (Hardwick) Strunk. She married Wayne Turpin and he preceded her in death. She later married Richard Vansant and he also preceded her in death. She then married Clarence Lester Kirkman and he survives. She retired from RCA, NWSC Crane and custodial service at Mooresville High School. She was a member of Free Methodist Church of Mooresville. Survivors include her husband, Clarence, of Plainfield; two sons, Robert Turpin and wife Pam of Cloverdale and Danny Lee Turpin and wife Loretta of Plainfield; one daughter, Debra Sue Burnside of Mooresville; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; four brothers, Luther, Bud, Leonard and Orville Strunk; and five sisters, Betty Baugh, Clara Turpin, Bessie Marie Strunk (in infancy), Nancy Stout, and Anna Connor. Ruby E. PerryApril 10, 1922 — June 27, 2012 Ruby E. (Younger) Willis Perry, 90, of Phoenix, passed away on June 27. Born in Bedford, Ruby moved to Phoenix in 1953. She was known to all as Aunt Ruby. She worked in the food service industry for many years. Her greatest joy was taking care of her family. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, puzzles, the Phoenix SUNS, cooking (and eating!), as well as visiting with everyone. Ruby was a lifetime member of Rebekah’s Lodge. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Debbie Younger; husband, Donald Willis; second husband, Francis Perry; and eight siblings. She will be greatly missed by niece, Patricia Goodrich, whom she dearly loved and raised as her own; great-nieces Trina Hoover and Debra Wetherell; great-nephews Todd Coyle and Jason Goodrich and their children, Chelsea, Leanne, Ashtyn, Gillian and Ryder; and many other family members and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at a future date. Gladys ArmstrongDec. 8, 1923 — July 2, 2012 Gladys M. Armstrong, 88, of Springville and a resident of StoneBridge Health Campus and recently of Garden Villa, died at 3:54 p.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. Born Dec. 9, 1923, in Pueblo, Colo., she was the daughter of Anton J. and Mary H. (Lesar) Germ. She married Harry T. Armstrong on Sept. 10, 1945, and he preceded her in death on May 4, 2004. During World War II, she worked in the steno pool on the Pueblo Airbase where she met her husband. Later, during the 1950s and 60s, she worked in the office of the Springville Feeder Auction. She attended the Popcorn Christian Church. She was a former member of the Early Birds Extension Homemakers Club and several bridge clubs. She served on the Extension Board, the Extension Homemakers Presidents’ Council and the Lawrence County Welfare Board. Survivors include a daughter, Janet Armstrong of Springville; a sister, Thelma Kissick of Longmont, Colo.; nieces, Diane Withrow and Cheryl Hoglund, both of Colorado; nephews, Joe Armstrong and Alan Armstrong, both of Springville, and John R. Hochevar and Randy Hochevar, both of Colo.; several great-nieces and nephews; and great-great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Kent Armstrong; one sister, Ethel Hochevar; one niece, Leslie Armstrong Wilson Hassfurder; and a nephew, Mark Armstrong. Annette K. McCartFeb. 25, 1958 — June 29, 2012 Annette Kathleen McCart, 54, Orleans, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Friday at Indiana University Health Bloomington, after a long battle with cancer. She passed in peace surrounded by her family. Born Feb. 25, 1958, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Harold and Nancy Alice (Wease) Ratliff of Bryantsville. She married Chris McCart April 21, 1979. Annette graduated in 1976 from Mitchell High School and had lived in Charlotte County, Fla., and the Mitchell area. She had worked at Foamcraft in Mitchell, Mitchell Subway as manager, Older Americans Services in Orleans, and the shoe factory and Pizza Hut in Paoli. She was an extremely dedicated worker — even working while going through chemo. She was a very dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother, always putting others ahead of herself. She loved her home and family very much. She never complained, even while going through treatments. She also is a loyal follower of Jesus Christ, a member of the House of Prayer, and had been an officer in The Unchained Gang motorcycle ministry. She was a founding member of Lawrence County ABATE, Region 10. She was an avid student of living history and participated in the Clark County Militia of 1812 reenactment. Surviving are her husband, Chris McCart of Orleans; children, Donny McCart and Tiffany of Orleans and Heather McCart and Josh of Orleans; grandchildren, Cameron, Chantel, and Ethan, Anna, Alicia, Tyson, and Cory; and a sister, Wanda Jean Parsons of Shoals. Her parents; brothers, Jackie Lee Ratliff and an infant; and sister, Anita Kay Rhodes, preceded her in death. Cecil Boyd RifeOct. 4, 1925 — June 28, 2012 Cecil Boyd Rife, 86, of Lafayette and formerly of Bloomington, passed away at his residence on Thursday, June 28, with his family at his side. He was born in Monroe County on October 4, 1925, the son of Cecil A. and Della (Eads) Rife and attended Smithville High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and served both in the South Pacific and European Theaters. Boyd retired from the Bloomington Police Dept. in 1972 and operated his own contracting business for almost 30 years until retiring. His memberships include Monroe Lodge #22, F. & A.M., Bloomington York Rite Bodies, Murat Shrine of Indianapolis and the Stonebelt Shrine Club. He also was a member of Don Owens Lodge of the F.O.P., Burton Woolery Post #18 of the American Legion and the Loyal Order of Moose #1081 in Bloomington. In earlier years he volunteered with the Bloomington Babe Ruth Baseball league as a driver. Survivors include his wife, June (Crandall) Rife of Lafayette; one daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Mike Lucroy of Lafayette; two grandchildren, Madeline and Matthew Lucroy; one brother, Charles R. “Jack” Rife of Bloomington; and five sisters, Carol Cain and Brenda (Burton) Eads, both of Bloomington, Marilyn Sue (Kelsie) Martin and Lois (Galis) Hillenburg, both of Bedford, and Shiela Hogan of Nevada, MO. She graduated from Bedford High School with the Class of 1944 and briefly attended nurses’ training at Wellborn Memorial Baptist Hospital and Evansville College. She married Jess F. Mc Hargue on Aug. 19, 1945. Her parents; husband; and one son, Larry G. McHargue, preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, Michael McHargue (Sharon), of Mitchell, and William L. McHargue (Mary), of San Jose, Calif.; one daughter, Susan (Ronald) Wolter, of Charlotte, N.C.; and a daughter-in-law, Connie McHargue Boyles, of Columbus, Ohio; and nine grandchildren, Edward Wolter (Courtney), of Fort Mill, S.C., Joseph Wolter, of Charlotte, N.C., Jessica “Katy” Wolter Jugan (Danny), of Fort Mill, S.C., William B. Delmer Lee TurnerApril 27, 1927 — June 28, 2012 Delmer Lee Turner, 85, of Bloomington, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at Bell Trace Health and Living Center. Born April 27, 1927, in Lawrence County, Indiana, to Benjamin and Julia (Young) Turner. Delmer attended Needmore High School and, just before starting his senior year, was drafted by the Army and sent to Camp Lee in Virginia for basic training on August 8, 1945. He served his country for 18 months overseas in France and Germany. Delmer was honorably discharged at Fort Sheraton, Illinois, on January 25, 1947, and he returned to Lawrence County. With his father he formed a farming partnership. On January 25, 1950, he married Lucy Ann Mc Knight of Harrodsburg. That same year he started working at GM (Central Foundry) in Bedford. In 1952, he left GM and purchased a 350-acre farm in Monroe County. His love for the land and outdoors became his full-time occupation and passion. The Monroe County farm became his lifelong residence and was where he raised his three daughters. On October 10, 1959, tragedy struck and he lost his beloved wife Lucy of almost 10 years. On June 25, 1960, he married Anna Belle (Stines) in Ellettsville, Indiana. After more than 50 years of marriage, Anna preceded him in death on April 25, 2011. His farming became his calling and he strove to be the best farmer ever. He worked long hours and diligently to have the straightest corn and soybean rows and the highest yields. He was a tender of animals and loved raising Simmental cross cattle and crossbred swine. He practiced farming conservation and was awarded the Monroe County Conservation farmer of the year in 1994. Over the years he expanded his farm operation by acquiring more land in Lawrence and Monroe County. To supplement the family farm, he worked at several limestone quarries in Bloomington and Oolitic. He drove a school bus for Clear Creek Township Schools, Smithville, and later Monroe County Community Schools. Some of his fondest memories were joking with students and transporting the Smithville High School boys’ basketball team to away games. For more than 64 years, Delmer was a member of the Harrodsburg Assembly of God Church. In his younger years he served the church in many capacities, church treasurer, Sunday school superintendent and a deacon. He was also a proud member of the Masons and the Scottish Rite. Sadly 15 years ago he was forced to retire from farming due to macular degeneration. With very poor eye sight, he still enjoyed riding in his RTV to his corn, soybean fields and pastures. He enjoyed watching and listening to cattle auctions on the RFD farm channel and actively kept tabs on the grain market. He was always happiest when surrounded by family and his little dog, Kado. Delmer is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Alan) Armstrong of Springville, and Beth (Bob) Shields of Harrodsburg. He will be remembered by his grandchildren, Amy (Cam) Spires, Dr. Ashley (Heath Prince) Armstrong and Allison Armstrong, all of Springville, Derrek (Michelle) Thompson, Bedford, Lauren and Alex Runyon, Harrodsburg, Kathryn Ryan, of Zionsville; step-grandchildren, Isaac and Zach Shields of Bedford; his great-grandchildren, Jacob, Joshua, and Scout Thompson, Caden and Casen Spires, and Olivia Grace Prince; step-great-grandchild, Gavin Blackman; a sister, Virginia Ingram, Springville; and two of his first cousins, who were like brothers, Frank and Eithel Turner. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives; sisters, Mary Louise (infancy), and Beulah Gill; and a daughter, Connie Sue Ryan. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day and Carter Mortuary, Bedford, with Pastor Terry Doane officiating. Burial will be at Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, July 2, and from 9 a.m. until time of service on Tuesday, July 3, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. David Ramey GibbsJuly 9, 1947 — June 28, 2012 David Ramey Gibbs, 64, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Bloomington Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born July 9, 1947, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Maver J. Gibbs and Vanita M. Gibbs. David was a graduate of Garfield High School in 1965. He earned his B.S. in technology, in 1976 from Indiana State University and worked for General Motors Powertrain in Bedford, Indiana, for 33 years. David was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Friends and family alike will recall David’s ability to light up a room with his vibrant personality and humor. David is survived by his mother, Vanita M. Gibbs; his wife, Virginia Roelke Gibbs; two daughters, Elizabeth A. Richardson and her husband Jason of Clermont, FL, and Catherine M. Reeves and her husband Alexander of Bloomington; and three grandchildren, Olivia, Cooper and Sophie Richardson. His father preceded him in death.
