January 31, 2015 Helen I. Chasteen April 9, 1917 — Jan. 29, 2015

Helen Irene Hillenberg Chasteen, 97, of Terre Haute and Bedford, passed away peacefully at Union Hospital, Terre Haute, on Thursay.

Helen was born April 9, 1917, in Guthrie to James W. and Cora Alice Goodman Hillenberg. She graduated from Needmore High School in 1936. She married the Rev. John Harvey Chasteen Oct. 8, 1938, and served with her husband in the United Methodist Ministry in the South Indiana Conference from 1954 until after retirement.

Helen was an expert seamstress — she designed and tailored uniforms at Reliance in Bedford for the military during World War II, hand-made many quilts, and designed clothing and wedding dresses for her daughters. She worked in retail and especially enjoyed working with children in preschool.

Helen was a master gardener; she enjoyed nature, traveling, doing extensive family genealogy research, spending quality time with her family, studying The Holy Bible, and her quiet time in prayer. Helen was a member of the Ashboro United Methodist Church which at one time her husband pastored. In recent years she attended Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Becca Parks (Marshall), Joyce Hoare (Gary) and Gail Culbertson of Terre Haute; grandchildren, John Owen James of Blacksburg Va., Jeana James Wellman (Glen) and Janeece James Stringer of Saline City, Matthew Hoare (Shannon) of West Terre Haute, Catherine Culbertson Crawford (Brian) of Indianapolis and Daniel Culbertson (fiancé Jennifer Stephenson Hittle) of Terre Haute; grea-grandchildren, Michael James-Deramo, Vincent James-Deramo, Jamie Graham Ward (Jonathan), Jessica Graham Lowe (Jesse), Dallas Graham, Lacey Graham, Tanner Hoare, Sidney Hoare, Myles Stringer (Elizabeth), Casey Stringer and Jarett Stringer; and great-great-grandchildren, Jayda Ward, Jaylyn Ward, baby Ward expected soon, Hayden Lowe, Elijah Lowe, Jaxxon Frazier, and baby Stringer expected soon. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Florence Chasteen Childers and Wilma Chasteen Charles of Bedford and Bonnie Chasteen Wolven of Indianapolis; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; siblings, Stanley Hillenberg, Thurman Hillenburg, Thelma Hillenberg Rogers, Freeland Hillenburg, Winfred Hillenburg and Ruth Hillenberg Stewart; granddaughter, Maria Joy Culbertson; and great-grandsons, Garrett and John Stringer.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sugar Grove Free Methodist Church, 3201 McKeen St., Terre Haute, with Pastors Andy Fishback, Bob Kumpf and Monte Vincent officiating. Burial will take place at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Judah Cemetery in Judah.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday from 4-7 P.M. in the church.

Clifford Gugin, 81, of Bedford, died at 4:26 a.m. on Tuesday at Core Nursing and Rehab in Bedford.

Born April 3, 1933, in Michigan, he was the son of Harold and Margaret Mongene (Standridge) Gugin. He married Karen Sue Woodward on July 13, 1963, and she survives.

He was a painter and a member of the Dive Christian Church.

He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of Bedford; two sons, David Gugin and Danny Gugin, both of Michigan; a daughter Diana Johnson of Michigan; several grandchildren, including Mikayla Elizabeth and Shayna Helene Winters and Chandall Raynea Gugin; two sisters, Vernetta Hansen of Cedarville, Mich., and Jesse Clark of Flint, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Thomas Gugin; two daughters, Laura Lea Gugin-Winters and Kathy Jean Gugin (in infancy); and two brothers, Harold and Cecil Gugin.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Dive Christian Church with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Christian Cemetery with military rites accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and D.A.V. Chapter 2.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the church.

R. Douglas Williams

June 28, 1949 — Jan. 27, 2015

Richard Douglas “Doug” Williams, 65, Bloomington, formerly of Mitchell, passed away Tuesday “saving his family from a burning ship sinking at sea.”

Born June 28, 1949, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Richard A. and Betty J. (Williams) Williams. He was married to Helena Alexander and she preceded him in death.

He had a quirky sense of humor with a memorable laugh. He loved people and spending time with family and friends. He loved bicycling, history and art, and was an avid reader. He had an adventurous spirit and loved traveling.

Doug graduated from Mitchell High School in 1967.

Doug worked 27 years at Mills Market before being employed at Pepsi-Cola and was a member of Teamsters Local No. 135.

Surviving are a daughter, Gretchen (Robert) King of Mitchell; sons, Noah (Nikki) Williams of Vancouver, Wash., and Ben (Sarah) Williams, Newark, Ohio; parents, Richard and Betty Williams of Bloomington; stepchildren, Stephanie Rexing, Clancey Alexander, and Patrick Alexander;  grandchildren, Abraham “Abe” King, Lorelai King and Bailey Williams.

His wife and stepdaughter, Mary Jo Grant, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Jim Hatfield officiating.

Virginia S. Strange

June 17, 1936 — Jan. 28, 2015

Virginia Sue Gootee Strange, 77, Loogootee, passed away on Wednesday at the Loogootee Nursing Center in Loogootee.

She was born on June 17, 1936 to the late Cletus and Theresa Gootee.

Sue was a 1955 graduate of St. John High School. She earned her R.N. at St. Vincent School of Nursing in 1958 where she served as class president. She worked for many years at the Daviess County Hospital as the supervisor in the Intensive Care Unit. She also worked for several years at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford as a recovery room nurse.

Sue was passionate about being a good nurse and caring for those in need. Her peers and her patients treasured Sue for her competence and her caring. Her nursing career was cut short by a serious traffic accident in 1993. She and her husband Tom learned to love cruises as they expanded their horizons to the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and three very memorable trips to Rome in 2000, 2003 and 2005. Sue was a devoted basketball fan (St. John’s Eagles, Loogootee Lions, IU Hoosiers) and football fan (Notre Dame).

Sue is survived by her husband Thomas Strange; brother, Frank Gootee (Nancy); sister, Julie (Rick) Turner and children Andrea and Max Turner; uncle, Joseph Louis Padgett; two brothers-in-law Tim and Ed Strange; four sisters-in-law, Karen Norris, Joan (Leo) Haag, Kay Love and Francie (Fred) Doyle and more than 20 nieces and nephews on the Strange side.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Terri Sullivan Calloway.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Loogootee, officiated by Very Rev. J. Kenneth Walker. Burial will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee, Indiana.

Olive (Case) Jones, of Bedford, passed away at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday at Garden Villa, Bedford.

Born Nov. 18, 1918, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Everett and Lizzie (Horner) Case. She married Russell C. Jones; and he preceded her in death in 1988.

She was a graduate of Tunnelton High School. Olive was a member of the 19th Street (Midtown) Church of Christ.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are one son, Russell David (Ann M.) Jones of Bloomington; one daughter, Marsha Kay Jones of Bloomington; two grandchildren, Jeffrey David (Tammy) Jones and Deborah Ann (Steve) Jones Sinders; three great-grandchildren, Brittany Jones, Courtney Jones, Shelly (Nick) Gibson; and one great-great-grandchild, Lilah Gibson.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers; and two sisters.

E. Wayne Donald Hampton

June 14, 1956 — Jan. 24, 2015

E. Wayne Donald Hampton, 58, Bedford, formerly of Louisville, Ky., went to meet the Lord on Saturday morning at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital of Bedford, after a brief illness.

He was born June 14, 1956, in Louisville, Ky., the son of Emory Paul Hampton and Beatrice Berle Hampton, who preceded him in death.

Wayne worked in construction most of his life. He joined the U.S. Army in 1976.

He loved to listen to music and watch old army movies. He loved motorcycles and was a member of the Kentucky Motorcycle Association, as well as a retired member of the NightHawgs Motorcycle Club, Kentucky chapter.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a son, Wayne Hampton Jr. of Louisville, Ky.; one daughter, Venus Weinbrenner of Louisville; six grandchildren; one sister, Rita Garwood and husband Jack of Linton; three brothers, Jesse “Axe” Hampton and wife Jeanie “Pepper” Hampton of Bedford, Paul Hampton of New Albany and Joe Peck of Florida. Also his ex-wife and dear friend, Thelma Martin Hampton of Louisville; his girlfriend of eight years, Laurie Watkins of Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Services are pending at Creshaven Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. His brother, Jesse “Axe” Hampton officiating.

Kenneth E. “Kenny” Baker Sr., 74, of Bedford, passed away at 6:58 a.m. on Monday at his residence.

Born Jan. 31, 1940, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Millard Baker and Pearl (Voorhies) Baker. He married Wanda Lee Farris on Jan. 22, 1960; and she survives.

He retired from Laborers Local Union No. 741, in Bloomington. He was a member of the local Union No. 741. Kenneth was a veteran of the United States Army.

He loved being in the woods, hunting mushrooms, ginseng, and yellow root. He was the rock of his family, and he raised and spoiled lots of children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Wanda of Bedford; one son, Joseph M. Baker of Bedford; nine grandchildren, Ricky (Robin) Holmes, Eric (Cherie) Holmes, Sarita Holt, Timber (Noah) Browning, Tonya Feathers, LaCosta (Ryan) Eads, Cody (Nicki) Baker, Kortney Baker, and Heather (Gery) Davis; 18 great-grandchildren, Tyler, Cruz, C’Aira, Celina, Emma, Bella, Bear, Tyson, Cheyenne, Shaylynn, LaKota, LaKeylah, Jasmine, Rylan, Aaliyah, Sylas, Sebastian, and Kaysen; one sister, Reva (Dale) Monday; two brothers, Jimmy Baker and Joe (Mary) Baker; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four children, Wanda Baker, Kenny Baker Jr., Tony Baker, and Suzann Holt; and eight brothers and sisters.

Patricia Ann Jones, 80, Bedford, died Friday evening at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Nov. 4, 1934, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Benjamin Roberts and Belva (Henderson) Roberts. She married Doyle F. “Little Boy” Jones on May 6, 1954, and he preceded her in death on July 19, 2011.

She was a kindergarten aide for 22 years at Needmore Elementary School. She was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Younger and husband Joey of Williams; one son, David Jones and wife Paige of Bedford; four grandchildren, Misty Deckard and husband Curt, Jessica Bailey and husband Nathan, Aaron Jones and wife Hannah, and Brandon Jones; four great-grandchildren, Taylor and Hailey Deckard and Noah and Jonah Bailey; and one sister, Carolyn Sue Tolbert of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband.

Kathy A. Wagner

Kathy Ann (Mowry) Wagner, 59, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday in Bedford.

She was born on May 1, 1955, in Bedford, the daughter of Marion (Clark) Mowry and Robert Mowry.

Kathy was a lifelong employee at Visteon in Bedford before transferring to Washington, D.C. as an employee of Communications Workers of America, CWA/IUE Local 907.

Survivors include her children, Stephanie (Harbstreit) Blackmore and Trent Harbstreit, both of Bedford; grandchildren, Mallorie Jones, Lane Hollingsworth, and Cole, Chey-Ann and Clay Harbstreit, all of Bedford;; sister, Nancy Fox of Bedford, and her children, Taylor and Kaylee; brother, Robbie (Jackie) Mowry of Bedford and his children, Landon (Alisha) Mowry of Indianapolis, and Mallarie and Meredith Moore of Bedford; brother, Bob (Staci) Mowry of Marion, Ohio; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and wonderful friends.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Warren and Louise Mowry; and maternal grandparents, George and Nellie Clark

Kathy adored her grandchildren who called her “Mamaw Goose” and she was equally caring to her nieces and nephews. Kathy was loved by all who knew her and she always had a smile and a laugh with whomever she came in contact. Kathy will be missed immensely.

Ray G. Merry, 92, Mitchell, passed away at 6 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Oct. 24, 1922, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Benny and Nellie (Hickman) Merry. He married Edna L. Miller June 17, 1944.

Ray retired from Lehigh Cement Company and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Edna Merry of Mitchell; children, Eve Elaine (Ron) Neal of Anderson. Alan R. Merry of Dallas, Texas; son-in-law, Don Fortner of Jasper; grandchildren, Jason A. Fortner, Laura N. Bupp, Cara Elaine Schulz and Lindsay R. Campbell; 12 great-grandchildren, and a sister, Sylvia Eckard of Sparta, Mich.

His parents; daughter, Susan L. Fortner; brothers, Arthur Merry and Jesse Merry; and sister, Louise Hopper preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with the Rev. Reggie Clark officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Rhonda Hamilton, 57, of Bloomington, passed away at 1 p.m. on Thursday at her residence.

She was born in Columbus on Sept. 7, 1957, to Chester Hillenburg and Mattie (Sowders) Nicholson, she attended Heltonville High School. She was a homemaker.

She married Jeff Hamilton and he survives. Rhonda attended Life Mission Ministries Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jeff Hamilton of Bedford; her parents, Stanley “Buster” Nicholson and Mattie (Sowders) Nicholson of Heltonville; two daughters, Heather (Tim) Fleener and Jennifer Armstrong all of Bedford; five grandchildren, Lauren, Gabe, Madeline, Braydon and Trenton; two brothers, Chester “Randy” Hillenburg of Heltonville, and the Rev. Michael (Angel) Nicholson of Bedford; and two sisters, Lisa (Bob) McDonald of Bloomington and Detra “DeeDee” (Tim) Bennett of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her father, Chester Hillenburg, in 1963.

Celebration of life will be at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 1, at Life Mission Ministries Church on Bartlettsville road in Bedford.

Larry Dennis Strange, age 69, of Bloomfield and of Burkesville, Ky., passed away on Friday at his cabin on Jones Ridge in Cumberland County, Ky.

He was born in Glasgow, Ky. on Sept. 21, 1945, the son of Commodore Alfred “C.A.” and Josephine Booher Strange. He was a member of Pleasant Kentucky Ridge Church.

He was owner of Larry Strange Trucking Company, co-owner of Libby’s Café and Strange’s Little Market for over 30 years and was a former employee of Wetterau Foods Distribution.

He was a member of the Burkesville Masonic Lodge No. 413 F.&A. M., a member of the Scottish Rite and a Shriner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Elizabeth “Libby” Spears Strange and his brother-in-law, Ralph Raper.

He is survived by his children, Barry Dennis (Lisa) Strange of Bloomfield and Tonya Marie Fortner of Bedford; his brother, Joe (Diane) Strange of Burkesville, Ky.; his sister, Wandalyn Raper of Bloomfield; six grandchildren, Seth (Emily) Strange, Joshua Strange, Jordan (Amanda) Strange, Shelby Fortner, Samuel Fortner, Silas Fortner; two great-grandchildren, Hadley Strange, Hazel Strange; and one great-grandchild on the way, Emma Grace Strange.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. (CST) on Monday in the Memory Chapel of Norris-New Funeral Home with Brother Erin Raper officiating. Burial will be in the Jones Ridge Cemetery in Cumberland County, Ky. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. (C.S.T.) Sunday until the funeral on Monday.

Tracy L. Hillenburg

Tracy Lee Hillenburg, 70, of Shoals, passed away at 7:40 p.m. on Wednesday at his residence.

He was born Aug. 16, 1944, in Lawrence County to Earl and Rhea Dawn (Tims) Hillenburg.

Tracy enjoyed country music and singing. He loved to travel and made several trips to Texas and Alaska.

He was a retired self-employed contractor. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Sue (Hovis) Hillenburg of Shoals; one sister, Kelly Reed of Mitchell; daughters, Tina Marie and Joe Nichols of Bloomfield and Athena Ann and Wade Caudill of Bedford; sons, Triston and Tammy Baker of Silverville and Tracy and Susan Hillenburg of Oolitic; two stepsons, William R. Hamblin and Steve R. Hamblin of Shoals; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Rhea Dawn Hillenburg; brother, Kevin Hillenburg; and two sisters, Peggy Bundy and Marsha Horton.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hickory Ridge Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Born Oct. 16, 1925, in West Baden, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Pearl (Burton) Elmore. She married Harry Ray on April 15, 1944, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1983. She later married Benjamin Crane in 1986 and he preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1999.

She was a graduate of Orleans High School with the Class of 1943.

She had worked in the Deli Dept. at Mill’s Market, at RCA and NAD Crane.

She was a 59-year member of the Englewood Baptist Church and the Women’s Missionary Circle.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry L Ray and wife Sue of Bedford, William L. (Bill) Ray and wife Connie of Carmel and Stephen D. Ray of Bedford; a daughter, Anita Walker of Bedford; three brothers, Dewey Elmore and wife Sybil of Evansville, Ralph F. Elmore and wife Barbara of Calhan, Colo. and Lloyd Elmore Jr. and wife Gwen of Livonia, Mich.; five granddaughters, Luci McFall (Rick), Jennifer Emmerson (Rob), Melissa Tackett (Greg), Jodi Terry (John) and Julia Lindsey; three grandsons, Jerry L. Ray Jr. (Crystal), Brian Ray (Misti) and Bradley Ray (Laura); 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; two brothers, Sterling and Donald Elmore; a daughter-in-law, Merryl Kramer Ray; and a sister, Juanita Sue Elmore (in infancy).

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Christian Church Cemetery.

Rebecca Jean (Becky Corps) Meadows, 72, of Bedford, passed on from this life at 9 a.m. on Monday at her residence with her loving family at her side.

She was born May 3, 1942, in Bartholomew County, and soon moved to Bedford. She was the daughter of George Franklin and Jean G. (Robbins) Corps. She married Jack Meadows on Aug. 13, 1961 and he survives.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford. Her family, friends, and church family were the light of her life. She especially enjoyed the New Horizon Sunday School Class.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School with the class of 1960. She attended Indiana University and held a certification in interior design/real estate staging. Interior design was her passion.

Both she and Jack renovated/built new over 60 homes in the Lawrence County area. They also owned and operated Bedford Paint and Wallpaper. In earlier years, she was employed by IU sports information and enjoyed the sports stat desk at IU basketball games. She was a licensed beautician and was owner/operator of Hair Designs by BJ, along with her mother Jean and daughter, Michelle.

She was known for her ability as a cheerleader (her entire school years) and dancing. She enjoyed the 1960 class reunions and the fellowship of her classmates.

She was so proud of her children, and grandchildren. Her top priority was being involved in their sports, cheerleading and dancing.

Survivors include her husband, Jack; daughters, Michelle Jean (Darren) Root, Mellonie Jan Dixon and Amy Leigh (Jon) Jeffries; nine grandchildren, Andy (Anna) Root, Meredith Root, Alex Root, Chelsea Dixon, Taylor Dixon, Mathew Garrison, McKenna Garrison, Averie Jeffries and Alivia Jeffries; and a brother, Robin D. Corps of Carmel, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, her parents and a brother, Larry G. Corps.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday at the First Baptist Church in Bedford with the Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Frances Pauline Stafford, 89, of Bedford, died at 5:05 p.m. on Tuesday at her residence.

Born March 23, 1925, in Oolitic, she was the daughter of John Andrew and Lora (Miller) Tolliver. She married Wayne Stafford on Dec. 17, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2002.

She was a wife, mother and homemaker. She had been a seamstress at the Turner Doll Factory in Heltonville.

She was a member of the Judah Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for 30 years.

Survivors include three daughters, Fran Cobb and Claudia Treasa (Terri) Stillions both of Bedford, Anna L “Ann” (Donald) Hillenberg of Heltonville; two sons, Danial D. “Danny” (Evelyn) Stafford of Heltonville and Claude Thomas “Tommy” (Brenda) Stafford of Bedford; 18 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wayne Franklin (Edith) Tolliver of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, June Owens and Joyce Holloway; four brothers, John Tolliver Jr., whom she cared for in her home from 1965 until his death in 2000, Delbert, Joseph and Jerry Tolliver; two sons-in-law, Opal Cobb and Joel Ward Stillions.

Born Dec. 29, 1951, in Centerville, she was the daughter of Robert and Mary Helen (Andrews) Alexander. She married James R. Stevenson Jr. on Jan. 15, 1972, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2008.

She was a graduate of Centerville High School with the Class of 1970 and where she was a cheerleader.

She was a food representative for several food corporations, most recently working for Arthur Bertel & Associates.

She had been active in the St. Ambrose Catholic Church and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. She attended the Mitchell Wesleyan Church.

Survivors include three sons, Craig Stevenson and wife Gretchen and Chad Stevenson, all of Oolitic, and Chris Stevenson and wife Trisha of Bedford; grandchildren, Sydney, Kaitlyn, Connor, Logan and Bradley Stevenson; two brothers, Pastor Todd Alexander of Gallatin, Tenn., and Erin Alexander of Savanah, Tenn.; and a sister, Melissa Murphy of Fort Worth, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a brother, Brian Alexander.

Jason Spinks, 44, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Bedford, died Friday in Florida from injuries sustained in an aircraft accident. He died doing what he loved.

Born Oct. 30, 1970, in Bedford, he was the son of Gary and Vicki (Magnus) Spinks. He married Theresa Lewis on Nov. 22, 2014, and she survives.

He was a pilot with a passion for flying. He was co-owner of Light Sport Planes, which he built and sold.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa, of Ocala, Fla.; a son, Camden Spinks and wife Stephanie of Oolitic; the mother of his son, Tamara McCormick; stepchildren, Justin and Julie Andrews, both of Ocala, Fla.; a grandson, Curtis Mathews; a sister, Danielle Spinks of San Francisco, Calif.; and an uncle, Dan Magnus of Portland, Ore.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Brandi Spinks.

Margie was retired from Indiana Bell Telephone as a customer service supervisor. She was a graduate of Needmore High School.

She was devoted and very dedicated to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a son, James (Marsha) Terrell of Bedford; three grandchildren, Kevin (Lindsey) Terrell of Franklin, Kurt (Brandi) Terrell of Franklin and Kelli Terrell of Bedford; and seven great-grandchildren, Austin, Ali, Carter and Mia Terrell, and Konley, Kline and Kale Woodward.

Born April 5, 1964 in Bedford, he was the son of Norman Rollins and Shirley (Stevens) Hedrick. He married Debby Kinser on April 16, 1987 and she survives.

He was self-employed and the owner of Greg Rollins Contracting. He was of the Protestant faith.

Greg enjoyed fast cars, music (especially Elvis Presley) and golf. He loved Big Bang Theory, Trivia and the History Channel. He was a pilot and an excellent craftsman.

Don was born Sept. 14, 1927, near Avoca, to the late Lionel and Zella Alice Spoonmore Robertson.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis Smith Robertson; three sisters, Phyllis Fry of Bedford, Rose Ann (Randy) Maloney of Midland, Texas, and Judith Tindall of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, William L. Robertson, Indianapolis; and two of his best friends, Glenn Wills and Eldon Berridge.

Survivors include his second wife, Virginia Robertson of Carmel; daughter, Belinda (Rick) Pflueger; granddaughter, Megan Pedersen; grandson, Roger Christian “R.C.” Pedersen; four stepsons, Jeffrey, Michael, Jason, and Sherwin Bocade; sisters, Sara Harp of Oolitic, Brenda Stewart of Mooresville, Patty (Mark) Robertson of Ellettsville; several nieces and nephews; and among his best friends, Mike and Janice Baugh.

Robertson served in the Merchant Marines from 1945 to 1947 and later in the U.S. Army. He was the founder and president of ROBCO Distributing, Inc.

Benson “Von” VonFeldt, 69, of Mitchell, passed away at 6:53 p.m. on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

He was born in Denver, Colo., on Oct. 13, 1945, to Ned and Anna (Bieker) VonFeldt. Von married Sharon (Smith) VonFeldt on Dec. 18, 1982, in Las Vegas and she survives.

Von was a farmer and member of the Lutheran Church of Johnstown, Colo.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon VonFeldt of Mitchell, one stepson, Bob VanDenburgh and wife Janie of Mitchell; one stepdaughter, Dawna Hathaway of Colorado, seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Wagner and Cindy VonFeldt, both of Colorado.

Von was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; two stepdaughters, Shellie VanDenburgh and Sherrie Wenzel; and one stepson, Donald VanDenburgh.

Cremation was chosen with services in Colorado at a later date.

Patricia Ann (Wadeking) Thorne, 84, of Bedford, died at 12:42 a.m. Tuesday at IU Health Hospice House, Bloomington.

Born June 25, 1930, in Metropolis, lll., she was the daughter of Jesse Laymen and Versie Bertha (Sleeter) Wadeking.

She married Tom Thorne on July 16, 1950, and he survives, of Bedford.

She was a graduate of Spencer (West Virginia) High School, with the Class of 1948 and was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Bedford, where she was active with the Mother’s Club, a Sunday School teacher, Deaconess, church cook, sang with the choir and was past president of the Women’s Missionary Society. She was a scout den mother, where she had been mother of the year. She was a member of Eastern Star, Red Hatters, and Englewood School PTO.

Surviving are her husband, Tom Thorne of Bedford; two sons, Phil (Amy) Thorne and John David (Kathy) Thorne; two daughters, Patsy (Ed) Moore and Angie (Jim) Turner, all of Bedford; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marion Paige of Paducah, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Tom “Corky” Thorne Jr., and infant Thorne; two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Bedford, with the Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris and Phil Thorne officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Bedford.

Robert Wood Jr., 91, Mitchell, passed away at 2:23 a.m. Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Dec. 1, 1923, in Mitchell, he was the son of Robert Bruce and Edna (Clouse) Wood Sr. He married Elizabeth Maxine Terry April 5, 1943, and she preceded him in death March 6, 2014.

He worked at Commercial Motor Freight and retired from Smith Transfer in Louisville, Ky. Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of American Legion Post No. 250.

Surviving: sons, Keith (Brenda) Wood and Kenny Wood, both of Mitchell; daughter, Terry (Rick) Naftzger of Bloomington; grandchildren, Monique (Bobby) East of Spencer, Luke (Emily) Naftzger of Greenwood, Tisha (Randy) Hitchcox of Bloomington, Judy (Ricky) Schrock of Orleans, and Aaron (Carly) Wood of Iowa; stepgrandchildren, Ricky Naftzger of Bloomington and Annette (Chris) Roberts of Camby; great-grandchildren, Hannah Hitchcox, Dylan Dumond, James East, Julia East, Madelyn Hitchcox, Lee Schock, Payton and Kieran Naftzger; step-great-grandchildren, Curran, Madisyn, and Amelia Roberts; and sister, Betty Speck of Mitchell.

Cathy L. Clark, 65, of Bedford, died at 4:45 a.m. on Tuesday at the Bloomington Hospice House.

Born April 14, 1949, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Bill and Freida (Fox) Gratzer. She married Terry M. Clark on June 9, 1967; and he preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 2002.

Cathy was a graduate of Bedford High School, Class of 1967. She worked at Parkview School as a teacher’s aide for 12 years, and later worked at Shooting Stars Daycare and Preschool.

She was a member of Donica Church of God.

She enjoyed being outdoors and loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Surviving are one daughter, Lisa Kroll; one son Michael (Kelly) Clark; seven grandchildren, Kaine Clark, Phoenix Clark, Presley Clark, Chesney Clark, Megan Kroll, Ashley Kroll, and Haley Kroll; two brothers, Billy (Kiva) Gratzer and Jimmy (Melody) Gratzer; two sisters, Carolyn Lindley and Paula Gratzer; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Terry Clark; and one sister, Patricia Gratzer.

Betty Jewel Hunter, 91, of Bedford died at 4:05 a.m. on Sunday at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation, Bedford.

Betty was born on Sept. 21, 1923, in Lawrence County. She first married Raymond Whitted, who died in 1971; she then married George Hunter, who died in 1986.

She worked at GM Powertrain, Bedford, in production, and retired in 1984.

She was of the Protestant faith and had attended St. John’s Episcopal Church, Bedford.

Surviving are two daughters, Phyllis June (David) Lipscomb of Heltonville, and Deborah Ann (Robert) Lichtefeld of Bedford; six grandchildren, Brian Lipscomb and Rob (Jackie) Lipscomb, both of Heltonville, Bridget (Steven) Deckard of Bedford, Natalie Lichtefeld of Evansville, Kevin Williams of Bedford and Julie (Matthew) Pinnell of San Ociaso, Calif.; eight great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands; a daughter, Orita Williams; two sisters, Katherine Kittle and Frances Cameron; and a great-granddaughter, Hillary Deckard.

There will be no visitation or funeral services. Burial will occur in Beech Grove Cemetery, at a later date.

Ruth Edwards, 92, Bedford, formerly of Huron, passed away at 11:45 p.m. Sunday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Nov. 18, 1922, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Loranzo Dow and Alsadie (Bridges) Stevens. She married Dorsey Edwards April 27, 1940, and he preceded her in death April 19, 1986.

Ruth was a homemaker and had been employed at Trav-Ler Radio Corporation, RCA, and retired in 1995 from Stone City Products.

She graduated from Huron High School in 1940 with 12 years of perfect attendance. Ruth was a member of the Huron Baptist Church.

Surviving are one son, Dorsey (Janet) Edwards Jr. of Norman; daughter, Judith Ann (James E.) King of Mitchell; grandchildren, Kimberly Ann (Doug) Whitted of Norman, James Dale (Marcella) Edwards of Heltonville, Kevin James (Cindy) King of Mitchell, and John Edward King of Mitchell; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Margaret Stevens of Indianapolis; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Sylvia Suette Crane, 49, of Oolitic, passed away at 3:27 p.m. on Sunday at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born in Bedford on Nov. 5, 1965, to Robert “Bob” Crane and Connie (Browning) Crane.

She was preceded in death by her father, Bob Crane; and her grandparents, Charles and Goldie Browning and Clifford and Pearl Boofer, all of East Oolitic, one great-nephew.

Survivors include her mother, Connie Crane; three daughters, Seanna Gonzales, Selena Gonzales and Maria Orozco; grandson, Lennox Major Alexander Gonzales; and brothers, Robert “Bob” Crane Jr., Rudie B. Crane, and Rodney B. Crane and their wives. She is also survived by five nieces; four nephews; three great-nieces; six great-nephews; and several cousins.

Sylvia enjoyed spending time with family and friends, she will missed by all.

James Joseph Green, 78, Mitchell, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Monday at his residence.

Born Dec. 16, 1936, in Lawrenceport, he was the son of Leon and Rubie (Ray) Green. He married Shirley Jane Mattox July 24, 1959.

He had been employed at Indiana University Health Bedford and was the former owner of Green’s Drive-In.

He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1955. He was a member of the Bride of Christ Fellowship and Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM.

James was a beloved husband and father.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Green of Mitchell; daughters, Shelley Ducker of Mitchell, Sherry (Michael) Williams of Orleans and Shawna (Marshall) McDonald of Mitchell; grandchildren, Jared Ducker, Matthew Ducker, Jacob Williams, Jessica Hammack, Jonathon Williams, Joseph Williams, Jennifer Willis, Jacob Willis, and  Lindsey McDonald; great-granddaughter, Gabriella Wolcott; and sisters, Peggy (Joe) Bundy of Salem and Sheila Flinn of Bedford.

His parents; son, James Anthony “Tony” Green; and brother, Tom Green, preceded him in death.

Thomas W. Mitchell

Thomas Warren Mitchell, 64, of Somerset, died at 7:26 a.m., Saturday at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

He was born Jan. 13, 1950, in New Albany, to Warren and Harriett (Drake) Mitchell.

Tom was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the Class of 1968, and of Purdue University where he obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.

He married Donna Brinson on Nov. 15, 1969, at the Mount Pleasant Christian Church in Bedford.

He taught agriculture at Frankton and was principal at Covington before becoming principal at Southwood High School and retired from Marion Justice Thurgood Marshall Middle School. After retiring from the school building, he managed Asherwood Environmental Science Center and later worked part time at the Cabinet Place in Converse.

He enjoyed boating, golfing, racquetball, and playing pool. He was a Purdue University and Indianapolis Colts fan, and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Mitchell of Somerset; two sons, Brad (Amy) Mitchell of Indianapolis and Dennis (Lauren Duryea) Mitchell of Noblesville; two grandchildren, Thomas Warren Mitchell II and Samantha Marie Mitchell, both of Noblesville; three sisters, Patricia (John) Gramling of Angola, and Lola Jean (Stanley Kozuch) Kozak and Mary Kathryn (Mark) Myers, both of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents, longtime residents of Bedford.

Buddy Stevens

Buddy Charles Stevens passed away quietly on Jan. 8, 2015, after a lengthy illness.

Buddy retired from General Motors in Indiana after serving for over 30 years.

He was a member of Leonard Street Baptist Church of Hot Springs, an avid hunter, fisherman, and bird lover.

He is survived by his son, Terry C. Stevens of Bedford; granddaughters, Tana (Denny) Aubrey and Tiffany Stevens of Bedford, and Stephanie Stevens of Hot Springs, Ark.; brother, Don (Elsie) Terry of Hot Springs Village; sister, Brenis (Paul) Jones of Anderson, S.C.; great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Jaylin, and Ethan Aubrey; and his longtime friend and cousin, Paul Hamilton.

 He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Jessie Terry, and George Stevens; his beloved wife, Lillie Burroughs Stevens; and his son, Russell Stevens.

Ronald Lee Patton, 88, of Saint Cloud, Fla., passed away on Wednesday at his residence.

He was born on April 6, 1926, in Ellettsville.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and served during World War II.

In 1959, Ronald graduated from the Indianapolis Police Academy and worked as a Police Officer for the Indianapolis Police Department, where he retired in 1979 after 20 years of service.

He was a proud free Mason and was a member of North Park Masonic Lodge 646 of Indianapolis.

On May 21, 1983, he married Brenda Reynolds in Mitchell. Ronald and Brenda relocated to Saint Cloud.

He was preceded in death by his late wife, Phyllis Hope Patton; brothers, Wynn Patton and Robert Patton; and special brother, Harry Howland.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Brenda S. Patton; sister, Odetta Patton of Orlando, Fla.; aunt, Virginia Ruth Cardwell of Orlando, Fla.; God-daughters, Tiffany Allen and husband Paul from Lake Mary, Fla., and Dr. Tina Tso of Lake Mary, Fla.; special sister, Eleanor Howland of Chesapeake, Va.; special long time friend, Don Berg; sister-in-law, Connie Reynolds Edmonson of Mitchell; nieces and nephews, Pam, Tony, Judy, Dennie, Sherry, John, Kevin and Vic.

She was born Sept. 9, 1934, in Campbellsburg, the daughter of the late Clifford and Leona Johnson Hughes. She married Henry Maurice Elliott, who preceded her in death on March 21, 2012.

She was a homemaker and had worked at the Medora Plastic Factory for 15 years.

She was a member of the Medora Pentecostal Church. She loved flowers, gardening, cooking and outdoor activities.

Scott Hamilton, 71, Paoli, passed away on Saturday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington.

He was born April 26, 1943, in Paoli, to Jessie Earl and Pauline Coats Hamilton. He was married to Linda Little for 16 years.

He worked as personnel manager at Cornwell Company in Paoli, and retired from the Rogers Group in Mitchell  as a quarry dispatcher.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Orleans.

Nov. 22, 1923 — Jan. 9, 2015

Betty Jean Ooley was born November 22, 1923, in Lawrence County to Ralph and Jessie Wiilliams Thomas. She died unexpectedly Friday, January 9, 2015, at her home east of Bedford.

She was married November 2, 1946 to Paul R. Ooley.

She was a 1942 graduate of Shawswick High School and a member of the Church of Christ at Pinhook.

During World War II, she worked as a civilian clerical employee of the U.S. Army at Camp Atterbury. After her marriage, she was a mother, homemaker and used her considerable bookkeeping, accounting, clerical and organizational skills to support her husband in the operation of the family farm with its herd of registered Holstein cattle, his DeKalb Seed Corn dealership, and later, the family herd of registered Angus cattle.

Betty was an active member of the Farm Bureau for more than 65 years, held various offices and leadership roles in Lawrence County 4-H and the Lawrence County Extension Homemakers, and volunteered at the third-grade farm fair since the program’s inception. She also volunteered at the Lawrence County Museum and energetically pursued genealogy research for her own family as well as many friends. For several years, she has enjoyed having a booth at the local Farmer’s Market selling hand-embroidered and hand-sewn items as well as baked goods, especially pies and divinity. She also enjoyed providing food for the IBEP workers and last November, she single-handedly prepared meals for Lawrence County poll workers at the Unity Missionary Baptist Church.

Since the passing of her husband in 2012, she has remained active in operating the family farm and maintaining the herd of Angus cattle with entries in the Indiana Beef Evaluation Program (IBEP) and Southern Indiana Angus sales.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Polly and Gerald Jean of Bloomington; and a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Louisa Baker Ooley, of rural Bedford. Carolyn Pruett, 69, of Bedford, died at 12:50 pm on Friday, January 9, 2015, at her residence.

Born July 3, 1945, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Erving Hicks and Dessie (Wade) Hawkins. She married Danny L. Pruett on August 4, 1963, and he preceded her in death on August 13, 2012. She was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Victoria Fields and her husband Mike of Bedford, and Dian Livingston and her husband Terry of Paoli; five grandchildren, Chad Fields, Morgan Hunsaker, Hannah Fields, Christopher Pruett, and Brennan Hunsaker; three sisters, Virginia Wilcox of Bloomington, Evelyn Pruett of Bedford, and Anita Hamilton of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Jimmy and Daniel L. Pruett; and three sisters, Phyllis Lewis, Hazel Young, and Eva Sowder.

Erma J. Bridwell, 93, of Greenfield, IN, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2015. She was born August 28, 1921, in Bedford, IN, the daughter of the late Crook and Rose Love.

Erma was a member of First Church of God in Bedford, IN. She enjoyed gardening, playing games, singing and dancing. She was an avid Indiana University fan.

Erma is survived by her three daughters, Shirley Steward and her husband Gabby of Greenfield, IN, Sandra Quinn and her husband Conrad of Ft. Myers, FL, and Carol Freeman-Knapp and her husband Scott of Bloomington, IN; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and beloved family members.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Van Bridwell; a grandchild, a great-grandchild, a sister, and five brothers.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Bedford. She was a homemaker.

Surviving are her husband, Gary Miller, Bedford; two sons, Jacob W. and Davis A. Miller; parents, Tom and Pam Sanders of Bedford; one brother, Aaron Sanders and wife Angie of Bedford; one nephew, Cole Sanders; one niece, Olivia Sanders; grandparents, Wanda A. He was born and raised in the Bedford area, the son of the late Kenneth L. and Charlene (Wright) Howell. He was a graduate of Oolitic High School.

He married Mary Sue Garret, and she survives.

Other survivors include one son, Eric Howell; two daughters, Gale (Steve) Rosberg and Yonda Gay (Lynn) Darlage; and one sister, Shirley Ann (John) Cummings of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marilyn Sue Pritchett and Rita Kay Beavers; and several nieces and nephews.

Born Oct. 30, 1923, in Mitchell, he was the son of William Henry and Hazel (Isom) Sanders. He married Sherry Louise Scoville June 20, 1954, and she preceded him in death May 20, 2006.

He retired from General Electric and had also been employed at Roberts Brass and General Motors.

Don was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. and was the body guard of Rear Admiral Jerauld Wright. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 250, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107, the First Baptist Church, and Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM.

Surviving is one son, Brett D. Sanders of Mitchell; two granddaughters; and a brother, William (Dorothy) Sanders of Paoli.

His parents; wife; and sisters, Roberta Lynton, Olivia Anderson, Eunice Slosher and Mary Fisher, preceded him in death.

Kermit P. Walker, 95, Mitchell, passed away at 2:10 p.m. Tuesday surrounded by family at his home.

Born Oct. 21, 1919, in Mitchell, he was the son of John and Blanche (Dalton) Walker. He married Velma M. Barnes Dec. 20, 1942, and she preceded him in death Dec. 12, 2009.

He served honorably in the 9th Air Force of the U. S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a 70 year-member of American Legion Post No. 250 and a past member of the Mitchell Lions Club.

Kermit was proud of his contributions to the town of Mitchell, which included construction and design for the Carpenter Body Works building, Tri Kappa building, Lehigh, and the former Roberts Brass Company to name a few. He developed the Walker Addition and the former JayC shopping center.

Surviving are his children, Gary Walker of Bedford and Diane Dixon of Mitchell; grandchildren, Andrea Rose, Ryan French, Shelly Abel and Stephaney Washington; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill Walker of Grand Junction, Colo., and Don Walker of Daytona Beach, Fla.

His parents; wife; and daughter, Vicky S. Kinney; preceded him in death.

Mattie “Frances” Gambrell, 86, of Bedford, crossed over to be with her Lord at 11:35 a.m. Sunday at the Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford.

The devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was born April 1, 1928, in Sayre, Okla.; the daughter of Gus and Ida Carlile.

Frances married J.L. “Jack” Gambrell on April 18, 1948. During their 42 years together, Jack and Frances made their homes in Oklahoma, Colorado, Indiana, Louisiana and Mississippi where Jack preceded her in death on July 4, 1991. During her lifetime, Frances worked as a telephone operator, a homemaker and a partner in Jack’s career.

Frances was a member of the Donica Church of God in Bedford. Both Frances and Jack were founding members of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Vincennes.

Surviving are one daughter, Nancy Elaine Gambrell of Bedford; and one son, Michael Ray (Cassie) Gambrell of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren, Myriah (Shonn) Gambrell-Glenn, Downers Grove, Ill., and Mycah (Jeff) Gambrell-Ermak, Kirkland, Wash.; and three great-grandchildren, Ainsley Glenn, Carter Glenn and Jackson Glenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Jewel Armbruster; and one brother, Gus Carlile Jr.

There will be no funeral service or visitation at this time. Graveside services and burial will occur at a later date in Bay Saint Louis, Miss.

He was a graduate of Shawswick High School, Class of 1959. He was a member of River’s Edge Fellowship Church. He worked at Johnson’s Creamery and Wal-Mart.

Richard Reistter

Nov. 4, 1932 — Dec. 31, 2014

On the evening of Dec. 31, 2014, Dick passed peacefully at Hendricks Regional Medical Hospital in Danville. He was 82 years of age.

Dick was born in Danville, Ill., on Nov. 4, 1932. He was the first born of Edna and Harold Reistter.

He leaves his loving wife of 52 years, Carol (Gracey) Reistter; his sister, Linda (Reistter) Spaulding; nephew, Greg Spaulding; grandnephew, Reese Spaulding; niece and nephew, Sherry (Spaulding) Pfeiffer and Tom Pfeiffer; niece and nephew,  Tina and Jeff Gracey; nephew, John Gracey; niece, Jan (Gracey) Williams; and countless close friends.

As a young man, Dick worked with his father in their family petroleum delivery business. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean War. After the war, the family purchased a service station out on Washington Ave. He and Carol would run this until his retirement.

Dick was always active in his community. A former president of the Jaycees and a member of the Elks Lodge and American Legion. As a HAM radio operator, he and Carol spent many memorable times with other HAM enthusiasts.

Dick was loved and respected, not only by his family, but by all that had the privilege to know him. He was a loving and gentle man. Always with a kind word for friends and strangers alike. His unwavering love and devotion to his wife, Carol, set an example of what it means to be a husband. He will be missed terribly and remembered with full hearts and many smiles.

A celebration of life will be from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday at Cresthaven Funeral Home, Bedford. Interment will follow.

While living in Wichita, Carl and Dorothy were charter members of the Pawnee Avenue Church of God.

Surviving with her husband, Carl of Bedford, is her son, Ray Bradway and wife Charlene of Bedford; two grandchildren, Kevin Bradway and wife Mandy of Bloomington and Carla Hutchinson and husband Trevis of Bedford, three great-grandchildren, Peyton, Trevin and Carter Hutchinson; and two sisters, Maxine Folmer of Colorado and Mildred Lerner of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Mary Ann; and nine siblings.

She married Richard Dale “Dick” Hawkins on November 25, 1942, and he preceded her in death. They lived in St. Louis, MO, while Dick completed medical school and in San Antonio, TX, while Dick served in the military. They relocated to Wharton, TX; Biloxi, MS and ultimately back to Bedford for Dick’s private practice in pediatrics. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford, where she taught Sunday School for many years.

Survivors include her children, Karen Jean Weaver and husband, Bill, of Birmingham, AL, Richard Drew Hawkins and wife, Peggy, of Greenwood, IN, Penny Hawkins Taylor of Carmel, IN, Bret Hawkins and wife, Barb, of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Emily Kay Weaver Johnson, Derek Lane Weaver, Lawrence Pictor Taylor, Erin Nicole Taylor King, Bret David Hawkins, Rachel Susan Hawkins Stiffler, Kate Lauren Hawkins Holmstrom and Mary Emma Hawkins; 10 great grandchildren; her caregivers, Jeanie Judah and Jackie Short. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and siblings Carol Lamb, Ray Samuel Hall and Chloe Alice Embree.

Robert W. Johns, 92, passed away peacefully at Hearthstone Health Campus on Thursday, January 1, 2015. Robert was born in Bloomington, IN, to the late Earl and Docia (DeFord) Johns on September 28, 1922. He married his high school sweetheart, Jean McArtor, on September 19, 1942. He was retired from Crane Naval Ammunition Depot, where he worked for 31 years. He also worked for Purolator.

Robert was a World War II veteran, where he served under Gen. George W. Patton during the Battle of the Bulge. He received 5 Bronze Stars during the European campaign, where he landed on Utah Beach on June 16, 1944, A Co., with the 607th Tank Destroyer Battalion.

He was a member of the American Legion #18. He joined Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in 1994.

Robert is survived by his loving wife, Jean, of 72 years; one son, Steve Johns and girlfriend, Janet Curry; and one daughter, Shannon (Dan) Wagoner, all of Bloomington. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Jamie (Kenny) Willis of Springville, IN, Erika (Darrick) Willoughby of Bedford, IN, Aaron (Karlie) Johns and Andy (Nikki) Johns of Baytown, TX, Carisa Whittak of Short Hills, NJ; and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack Johns; and sister, Helen Brown.

Bryne Kliff Richardson, 55, of Bloomington, passed away January 2, 2015, at the Richland-Bean Blossom Nursing Home in Ellettsville, where he had been residing for several weeks due to health-related issues sustained over a long period of time. He was born in Smithville, Indiana, on November 15, 1959, to John Willis and Elizabeth “Betty” Pauline (Skirvin) Richardson.

He loved animals and worked for a period at the Monroe County Animal Shelter. His dog, Homer, was his beloved companion and will miss him greatly.

He was survived by siblings: John Robert Richardson, of Florida, Richard Richardson, of Spencer, Debra Kirby, of Monroe County, Gary Richardson, of Monroe County, and Keith Richardson, of Lawrence County.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Raymond, who died in infancy; and a sister, Cherie Moore Riggins.

Services will be 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2015, at Allen Funeral Home, with visitation 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. prior to service on Wednesday.

Jeanette (Acton) Bridwell, 82, Bedford passed away at 9:15  p.m. on Wednesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

She was born in Lawrence County on Nov. 8, 1931, to Orville L. and Katherine Belle (Marley) Trueblood.

She was a 1950 graduate of Huron High School and was a member of the Port Williams Church of Christ and attended the First Baptist Church in Bedford later in life.

Jeanette worked as an accounts receiving clerk at Bedford Regional Medical Center retiring in 1997

She married George Edward Acton in September 1950 and he preceded her in death in September of 1978, she then married Jack Bridwell in November of 1995 and he preceded her in death in July 2013.

Survivors include two daughters, Leann (Michael) Acton-Anderson of Springville and Diane Acton of Bedford; one son, Steve (Nancy) Acton of Ownesburg; five grandchildren, Cinnamon (Fred) Howell and Stephanie Acton, both of Greenfield; Jamie Clark (Joe Penwell) and Kyli Chenault, both of Bedford, and Shallen Acton of Morristown; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Gordon (Lucy) Trueblood of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, George Acton; and second husband, Jack Bridwell.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford, burial will follow in Port Williams Cemetery.

Ronald V. Essex

June 26, 1932 — Dec.31, 2014

Ronald Virgil Essex, 82, of Bedford, passed away at his residence on Wednesday.

Born June 16, 1932 in Bedford, he was the son of Leslie and Alice (Smith) Richardson. He married Virginia Sue Fisher, on June 21, 1980; and she survives.

He was a warehouseman for Boise Cascade Corp. in Idaho, and also worked at Crane Naval Base.

Mr. Essex was a member of the VFW of Mitchell Post No. 9107; the Lebanon Moose Lodge No. 1269; Mitchell Senior Citizens; Hope Methodist Church; he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy; and a member of the Stone Country Band.

He adored his family and playing country music, he enjoyed hunting and fishing trips with his friends, and driving his white Dodge truck for coffee runs all through town. His greatest accomplishment was being friends and playing music with Merle Haggard.

Surviving are his wife, Virginia Sue Essex, of Bedford; one daughter, Donna Case, of Bedford; three sons, Rick (Brenda) Ratliff, of Orleans, Mickey (Becky) Ratliff, of Heltonville, and Danny (Ruth) Ratliff, of Avoca; nine grandchildren, Sarah (Billy) Roach of Bedford, Tiffany Sanders of Bedford, Chelsea Bridges of Bedford, Jeremy (Brooke) Ratliff of Fayetteville, Jason (Lisa) Parsle, of Bedford, Emilee (Jamie) Meadows, Jill (Tim) Robertson of Bedford, Amanda (Steven) Gore of Avoca, and Danielle (Dave) Self; and 14 great-grandchildren, Avery, Austin, Gracie, Brooklynn, Ava, Camden, Savannah, Miranda, Haley, Braden, Jarrott, Kelsey, Addison, and Emma.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Tracey Ratliff.

Juanita M. Shepperd

Juanita Marie Shepperd was born on Nov. 15, 1927, to Hubert Earl Speer and Lois Ellen Kindred Speer in Lawrence County, and she went to be with her Heavenly Father on Jan. 1, 2015.

She was of the Pentecostal faith and was active in various Pentecostal churches and was a cook at the Pentecostal campground for many years.

Mrs. Shepperd had been a resident of The Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation in the Alzheimer’s Auguste’s Cottage for the past four years and received excellent care during her stay there (Her family is very thankful for each and every one of the staff that treated Juanita as their own family).

Before she was ill, Juanita was the owner of the Plaza Motel and Truck Stop in Bedford and after selling the business, she worked at NAD Crane as an Ordnance Worker, the Pentecostal Orphanage of Barbourville, Ky., and retired as a care giver to Dr. and Mrs. Richard P. Austin, she was a registered dietician.

She married Russell W. Shepperd on Nov. 22, 1946, and they had three daughters, Gwendolyn Norman, Jacqueline Rollins, and Karen (Larry) Dalton all of Bedford; who survive her along with seven grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Edward “Bud” Speer, David (Janet) Tidd, and a sister, Gail Connerly of Mitchell, a stepsister, Virginia Willowby of Virginia, two sisters-in-law, Louise (Kenny) Burton of Bedford and Mona Speer of Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.

Juanita was preceded in death by a grandson, Nathan Wade Dalton; two granddaughters, Angela Sullivan and Melissa Sullivan; her parents, Hubert Earl and Lois Ellen Speer; her stepmother, Mary Tidd Speer; seven brothers, Everett (Odella), Wilburn (Inez), Jasper, Edwin, Delbert (Alma), Curtis, Leroy (Marline), and Gerald (Susie) Speer; one sister, Geneva (Herman) Henderson; four stepbrothers, Paul, Raymond, Charles, and Bobby Tidd; one stepsister, Eva Sears, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Brother Larry Dalton officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Emily Johnson

Emily C. Johnson, 88, of Columbus, died at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Miller’s Merry Manor in Hope.

Born in Bedford, March 28, 1926, Emily was the daughter of Lee and Beulah Vaught May. She married Paul Victor Johnson, Feb. 12, 1948, in Indianapolis. He preceded her in death on March 10, 2004.

Emily was a member of the Millrace Senior Center. She enjoyed camping, gardening, playing Bridge, painting and loved Nature.

Emily is survived by her daughters, Phyllis C. (Michael) Hess of Columbus and Nanci V. Johnson of Bothell, Wash.; and sons, Nelson L. Johnson of Bristol, England and Kenneth A. (Michelle) Johnson of Holly Springs, Miss.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Jack and Bob May; and a sister, Phyllis May.

The Rev. Dennis Aud from Westside Community Church will conduct a private graveside service for Emily. There will be no calling or funeral service.

David A. Lewis, 59, of Bedford, died at 4:52 p.m. on Thursday in Bedford.

Born July 8, 1955, in Bedford, he was the son of William C. and Charlotte R. (Smith) Lewis. He worked at the Bedford Public Library and later at Walmart in Bedford. He was formerly married to Rhea Dawn Lewis, who has remained a dear friend.

David was a brilliant man and a very kind soul. To know David was to love him.

Survivors include a son, Rhett Lewis of Bedford; a daughter, Talia Blake and husband Joe of Bedford; granddaughters, Drew Gilbertson of Linton, Jade and Samara Wessell of Bedford; sister, Brenda Cleary and husband Woodie and two nephews, all of NC; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gladys and Hazel Lewis and Otho and Addie Mae Smith; his parents, William C. and Charlotte R. Lewis; and a brother, Billy Ray Lewis.

Maxine Covert, 93, Mitchell, passed away at 6:34 p.m. Thursday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born Feb. 22, 1921, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Artie and Vanice (Arnold) Pruett. She married Russell Covert Dec. 25, 1950, and he preceded her in death Dec. 19, 1963.

Maxine had been employed in the cafeteria at Emerson School. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1939, and was a member of the Tulip Street Christian Church.

Surviving are one son, Steve Covert of Mitchell; and three nieces, Susan Mayden and Debbie Watterson of Bedford and Karen Urig, of Charlotte, N.C.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Pruett of Mitchell.

Her parents; husband; brother, Eugene Pruett; and sister, Evelyn Watterson, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Brother Greg McBride officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Richard “Rick” E. Bruce, 57, of Westport, was called home to be with God at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2015. He was born on August 30, 1957, in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Bloomington High School South and Wabash Valley College. He worked at FloLine Architectural Systems, LLC in Hope and B&L Roofing in Bloomington. Rick loved all sports ,with baseball and golf being his passion. His big wonderful heart and concern for others will always be our memory. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Rick is survived by his parents, Robert E. and Sally J. (Schoenoff) Bruce of Bloomington; daughter, Brigitte Bruce of Greensburg; son, Anthony (Tony) Bruce of Westport; sister, Christine (Ray) Humphrey of Bloomington; brothers, Jon (Darlene) Bruce of Bloomington and James Bruce of Bedford; granddaughter, Izzabella Bruce-Kirtman of Greensburg; nephews, Jason Bruce, Shelby Miles, and Raymond Humphrey, all of Bloomington. He will be sadly missed by his best friend and companion of 20 years, Pam Jordan, and her family, Chris (Erica, Garrett, Alivia, and Kole) Jordan of Columbus, Amy (Scott, Taylor, and Kiley) Best and Matt Jordan, all of Westport.

Born March 28, 1926, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Hobart and Sally (Harrell) Hawkins. She married Charles B. Kirkman on March 25, 1945, and he preceded her in death on April 28, 2005.

She had worked as a teller in area banks and had been a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Tim C. Kirkman and Danny B. Kirkman and wife, Vickie, all of Florida; two daughters, Susan E. Kirkman of Florida and Sally A. Waggoner and husband Brad of Lebanon; 10 grandchildren, Rochelle, Jody, Jackie, Kyle, Kelly, Jessica, Viola, Amanda, Audra and Anna; and 16 great-grandchildren.

John M. Owens, 59, of Heltonville, formerly of Hawaii, died Wednesday.

Born Dec. 26, 1955, in Bedford, he was the son of John M. and Sybil (Carmichael) Owens.

He was a former manager of nightly custodians for dormitories at Indiana University.

He was a member of the Morman Church on Kauai, Hawaii, and an avid photographer.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Marie Crawford and partner Lauren of Pagosa Spring, Colo.; a son, John Owens of Bloomington; and a sister, Jami Ryan of Heltonville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
