Franklyn S. Sweeney, 93, of Bedford, died at 1:41 p.m. Thursday at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation, Bedford.

Born March 31, 1921, in Kokomo (Howard County), she was the daughter of Eugene Ralph Hendrix and Virginia Mae (Barnett) Hendrix. She married Lester C. Sweeney on Oct. 30, 1937; he died July 9, 1989.

She was a lay minister in the United Methodist Church, serving many southern Indiana congregations and was a homemaker. She was a member of Erie United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women (UMW.)

Surviving are three daughters, Carol S. (Don) Ellis of Washington, Anita (Charles) Hammond of Franklin, and Virginia B. “Ginger” White of Bedford; one son, Douglas C. Sweeney of Bedford; nine grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, the Rev. Lester C. Sweeney; and two brothers, Richard and David Hendrix.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Erie United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Meunier officiating. Burial will be in Erie Church Cemetery.

Friends may call  from 2-6 p.m.on Sunday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford, and from 10-11 a.m. Monday at the church.

William F. Kern, 95, of Bedford, went to be with his Savior at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Garden Villa.

Born Oct. 21, 1919, he was the son of Harry W. and Nancy (Gyger) Kern. He married May Ellen Fordice on Oct. 21, 1950, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 1996.

He retired in 1982 from NWSC Crane after 29 years of service as a railroad man and high explosives technician. His hobby was his business, Odds and Ends Jobs. He enjoyed helping others in his neighborhood and loved his flowers.

He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church.

He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army where he participated in the Battle of Normandy and the campaigns of Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He earned the EAME Theatre Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, American Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and the WW II Victory Medal.

Survivors include a son, Kenneth Kern; a stepson, Billy Joe McDonald and wife Tomiko; two daughters, Patricia Bex and husband Bob, and Nancy Kern; a grandson, Matt Turner and wife Dianna of Bedford, a granddaughter, Angie Turner Chase and husband, Joe of Springville; four great-grandchildren, Lauren Allison Turner, Garrett Timothy Turner, Ashley Jo Chase and Taylor Nicole Chase; a sister, Elizabeth Woods of Columbus, Ohio; three brothers, Claude Kern and wife Sara of Bedford, Cecil Kern and wife Debbie of Pennsylvania, John Kern and wife Pat of Florida; nieces, Kathy Jean Artman of Bloomington and Tracy Parr of Brownstown, who was raised in the home for seven years; nephews, Cale, Travis and Ronnie Kern and Alan Jarvis all of Bedford, Roger Kern of Florida and several other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Trula Reynolds and Anna Marie Jarvis; five brothers, Roland Kern and Perry Harold Kern (in infancy), Wilbur, Winford and Warren Kern; two sisters-in-law, Mae and Dorothy Kern; three brothers-in-law, Richard Reynolds, Ron Jarvis and Dennis Woods; a nephew Dallas Kern; a son-in-law, Tim Turner; and a great-niece, Amanda Stagnolia.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Randy Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery where military rites will be accorded by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and D.A.V. Chapter 2.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the service on Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Betty Anderson

Jan. 7, 1938 — Feb. 25, 2015

Betty Louise Anderson, 77, of Springville, passed away at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday at her residence.

Born Jan. 7, 1938, in Greene County, to Troy and Ellie (Watkins) Michael. She married Jerry Anderson on Jan. 4, 1963.

She retired from RCA in 1999 and was a member of the Newark Pentecostal Church. She and Jerry enjoyed traveling and camping with the “Wrinkle Gang.”

Surviving relatives include her husband of 52 years, Jerry Anderson of Springville; three brothers, Wayne (Joanna) Michael of Bloomfield, Marvin (Joan) Michael of Bloomington and Danny (Pam) Michael of Ellettsville; one sister, Gladys (Wayne) Edwards of Newark; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Michael and Kenny Michael; one nephew, Marty Michael; and her parents.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Monday at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield, with Brother Alan Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Newark Cemetery.

Public visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday and from 1 p.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Karen DeGrasse, 71, of Mitchell died Monday at her residence.

Born Feb. 26, 1943, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Roy and Catherine (Shelton) Craig. She married Frank E. DeGrasse on Dec. 2, 1960, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 1992.

She retired as a super-duper custodian for the Mitchell High School and was of the Christian faith.

She enjoyed cooking, sewing, music, games and watching Judge Judy.

She was a hard-working, strong, independent woman who will be remembered for her loving heart.

Survivors include a daughter, Denise Masterson and husband Kevin of Bedford; two sons, Steven DeGrasse and wife Angel of Corydon and Brady DeGrasse of Panama City Beach, Fla.; a sister, Brenda Phillips of Bloomington; grandchildren, Brandi Masterson and partner Jeremy Taylor of Bloomington, Kory Masterson and wife Stacy of Bedford, Erin Masterson and partner Brian Davis of Bloomington, and Isaiah and Mackenzie DeGrasse, both of Corydon; and two great-grandchildren, Piper and Shepherd Masterson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Eddie and Charles Craig; and two sisters, Donna Hackett and Anita Thompson.

Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the service on Saturday at the mortuary.

Robert E. Neely

Aug. 6, 1938 — Feb. 24, 2015

Robert E. Neely, 76, of Mitchell died at 4:05 p.m. on Tuesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Aug. 6, 1938, in Springville, he was the son of Walter and Della (Greer) Neely. He married Judith Hutton on Sept. 1, 1962, and she survives.

He retired from General Motors in Bedford and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of U.A.W. Local 440.

Survivors include his wife, Judith, of Mitchell; two sons, Bryan Neely and wife Sherry of Knox and Mike Neely and wife Annette of Mitchell; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Neely and wife Aiko of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Roger Neely and wife Janice of Oolitic; and a sister, Paulette Gilbert and husband Bill of Springville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a son, Mark Neely.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Brother Wendell Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Springville Cemetery West where military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and D.A.V. Chapter 2.

Betty Jean (Gambrel) Schmidt, 94, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday in Bedford.

Born March 23, 1920, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Dr. J.B. Gambrel and Laurel Gambrel.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School. Betty was a homemaker.

Surviving are sons, John David (Kathy) Schmidt of Florida, Daniel Carl Schmidt of Bedford, Joseph Blaine Schmidt of Bedford, and Winston Dean (Liz) Schmidt of Cincinnati, Ohio; one daughter, Nancy (Greg) Ashley of Bedford; nine grandchildren, Kristin Schmidt and Daniel Schmidt, of Florida, Emily Schmidt and Jeremy Schmidt and Kevin Ashley, Dana Haddan, all of Bedford, Jonathon Schmidt, of Saltillo, and Tracy Payne, and Lisa Williamson, of Cincinnati, Ohio; and nine great-grandchildren.

Ruth M. Vowell

Ruth M. Vowell, 90, of Bedford, died at 3:38 a.m. on Saturday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

Born May 1, 1924, in Daviess County, she was the daughter of Peter and Melinda (Graber) Stoll. She married Elwood P. Vowell on June 29, 1946 and he preceded her in death on Aug. 3, 2014.

She had worked for Buehler’s Grocery and was a member of the Solsberry Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her son, Jim Vowell and wife Pamela of Bedford; grandchildren, Annie Buechlein and husband Neil of Bedford, Corey Keith, and Eric Keith and wife Amanda, all of Bedford; great-grandchildren, Kelsei Keith, Drew Keith, Emily Keith, Memphis Buechlein, and Peyton Keith; and one brother, Darrell Stoll of Evansville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elwood; two brothers, Clarence Stoll, and Floyd Stoll; and four sisters, Rosetta Ebler, Iona Graber, June Miller, and Juanita Healy.

Lee Anna Hanks, 58, of Lawrence County, died Saturday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Aug. 5, 1956, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Wayne and Ruthie (Neumeister) Robbins. She married Michael Hanks on July 3, 1999, and he survives.

She was a homemaker and attended Dive Christian and Woodville Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Michael of Mitchell; daughter, Crystal (Kenny) Guffey of Mitchell; one son, Alan George II, of Mitchell; stepson, Greg Inman of Greene County; stepdaughter, Whitney Hanks, of Mitchell; four grandchildren, John David (Kimmy) Burton, Bradley (Karan) Burton, Jesse Burton and Zachary George; two great-grandchildren, Paxten and Bradley Burton; sisters, Ruth (Jeff) Boteler of Jasper, Ala., and Lois Mitchell of Bedford; brothers, Wayne L. (Terri) Robbins of Richmond, and Mike (Saundra) Robbins of Orleans; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one stepson, Michael Hanks.

Delmar W. May

June 13, 1946 — Feb. 22, 2015

Delmar Wayne May, 68, of Bloomington, passed away on Sunday at the Indiana University Health Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Delmar was born June 13, 1946, in Bloomington, and was the son of the late Sherman and Nellie (Hillenburg) May. He was a graduate of Bloomington High School.

He was an Army Veteran where he served in the Vietnam Era and was a tank mechanic.

He was a member of the Shiloh Pentecostal Temple.

He married Martha (Lake) May on Nov. 27, 1969, and she preceded him in death in 2009.

Delmar is survived by two daughters, Stephanie Brewer (Steve) of Medora and Heather Taylor (Brent) of Oolitic; five grandchildren, Braxton, Clayton, Addison, Tucker, and Amarah; and his sisters and brothers, Phyllis May, Dwight May, Jarvis May, Glenda Krebbs, Rick Riddle and Charles May.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and siblings, Peggy Keutzer, Gaylis May and Patsy May.

Funeral service for Delmar will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Pentecostal Temple, 77 West Smithville Road, Bloomington. Burial will follow at Cloverhill Cemetery.

Almeta May Walker, 87, of Bedford, died at 7:45 p.m. Saturday at Garden Villa, Bedford.

Born May 11, 1927, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Howard and Alma P. (Yaney) Chastain. She married Dale Edward Walker on May 1, 1945, in Bedford; he died June 1, 2007.

Almeta was a member of Englewood Baptist Church and was a homemaker who loved camping, sewing and doing crochet work.

Surviving are two sons, Robert C. (Suzanne) Walker, and Danny D. Walker, both of Bedford; four grandchildren, Robert D. (Ginger) Walker Sr. of Terre Haute, and Lorinda K. (Jason) Batchelor, Jodi Michelle (John) Terry and Julia Marie Lindsey, all of Bedford; two stepgrandchildren, Michelle (Michael) Osborne of Raleigh, N.C. and Mindi (Daryl) Robinson of Bedford; six great-grandchildren, Tyler Harrison, Robert D. Walker, Haley Burger, Evan Gregory Lindsey, Riley Stevens and Brooke Terry; two step-great-grandchildren, Trey Koch and Izabella Shew; and two great-great-grandchildren, Bentley Burger and Kayson Burger.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; and three brothers, Curtis, Jack and Richard Chastain.

Nellie M. Hunter

Nellie Mae Hunter, 82, of Worthington, passed away on Saturday at her daughter’s residence in Bedford.

She was born in Jackson County on Aug. 29, 1932, the daughter of Clyde and Bertha Mae Hubbard.

She was a homemaker and worked as a caregiver for others in their homes. She also worked with meals on wheels and the Worthington Sonshine Shop.

She was active for many years in the Worthington First Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son, Bill (Sharon) Sloan of Worthington; three daughters, Judy (Newell) Clifton of Bedford, Janie (Chuck) Millspaugh of Worthington, and Barbara Buskirk of Leeds, Ala.; two sisters, Barbara and Kay; a brother, Tom; six grandchildren, Angela, Micheale, Rob, Heather, Terry Lynn, and Michael; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Robert Sloan, William Hunter, and Emitt Lynn Fish; her son, Marvin Fish; three granddaughters, Dawn, Debbie, and Christina; two grandsons, Jeff and Robert; and 10 siblings.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Worthington, with the Rev. Bill Beckelheimer officiating. Burial will follow in Worthington Cemetery.

Bruce A. Shonk, 55, of Bloomington, formerly of Linton, passed away Friday, February 20, 2015, at IU Health Hospital in Bloomington. He was born in Indianapolis on June 25, 1959, to Foster and Mary (Blaney) Shonk. He had worked for Tree of Life in Bloomington for 12 years. He enjoyed NASCAR, sports, and spending time with his family.

Bruce is survived by his daughters, April Bough (Nathan) of Worthington, Amanda Lovell (Tim) of Worthington, Brittany Cooper of Vincennes, and Ashley Dumond (Kenny) of Mitchell; his mother, Mary Shonk of Ohio; his siblings, Joyce Howell (Bill) of French Lick, Nina Abram (John) of Bloomington, Jesse Shonk of Ohio, Foster Shonk of Bloomington, Sandra Giddings of Bloomfield, Connie Henderson of Bloomington, and Elsie Howell (Mike) of Worthington; grandchildren, Brandon, Kaylee, Nicole, Cheyanne, Isaiah, Madison, “one on the way,” Cody, Peyton, and Kadence; nieces and nephews, Russell, Jason, Christina, Debra, Michael, and Dustin; and his beloved pet, Peanut.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Stephen E. “Bud” Hassler, 89, of Bedford died at 7 p.m. on Thursday at his residence.

Born April 5, 1925, in Evansville, he was the son of Steven E. and Stella (Kessen) Hassler. He married Marianna Laine on June 12, 1948, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 2004.

He retired in 1982 after 36 years of service as a construction supervisor for Indiana Bell. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy and achieving the rank of submariner-cook, second class.

He was a member of the Cecil Martin Post No. 250 American Legion in Mitchell, St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mitchell, original founder Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department and Spencer Conservation Club and a life member of Indiana Telephone Pioneers.

Survivors include six children, Dennis Hassler and wife Kathy of Terre Haute, Julie Smith of Bloomington, Don Hassler and wife Melissa, Chris Hassler and wife Elnora, Susan Taylor and husband Michael and Tim Hassler and companion Jennifer, all of Bedford; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son in infancy; three grandchildren in infancy; one brother, Jerry Hassler; and a sister, Ruth Ellis.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mitchell with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with military rites accorded at the graveside by members of Cecil Martin Post No. 250 American Legion.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday and from 10:30 a.m. until noon on Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary where a rosary service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Bonnie Anderson

Bonnie L. Anderson, 64, of Bedford passed away  at 6:48 p.m. on Wednesday at her residence.

She was born in Des Moines, Iowa, on Dec. 18, 1950, to Jack and Shirley Grider. Bonnie married Larry K. Anderson on Sept. 21, 1996, in Bedford, and he preceded her in death on March 15, 2008.

Bonnie was a bank teller at Stone City Bank in Bedford and also worked at Mills Market in Bedford and Mitchell.

Survivors include children, Jeremiah (Misti) Anderson of Spencer, Lorrie McCracken of Oregon, and Frank Picard of Oregon; grandchildren, Layton and Paige Anderson, Michael and Amanda Christenson and Kelsie Picard; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Carrie Flynn of Oregon and Jackie Spencer of Bedford; and one brother, Michael Grider of Bedford.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Cremation with no services was chosen.

Kenneth L. Klingenmeier

Nov. 16, 1931 — Feb.18, 2015

Kenneth Leo Klingenmeier, 83, formerly of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday in Bowling Green, Ky.

Born Nov. 16, 1931, he was the son of Leo O. and Teresa (Dausch) Klingenmeier.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Surviving is one sister, Margaret Perkins, of Amherst, Ohio.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Final resting place will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Phillip D. Melvin, 72, of Bedford, was called home at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

Born Feb. 23, 1942, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Charles Franklin and Golda (Miller) Melvin. He married Brenda Garrison on May 3, 1980, and she survives.

He was a graduate of Shawswick High School. He was a retired master carpenter and builder of many homes in Bedford and surrounding areas.

He was a true outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, trapping and gardening. When he wasn’t in the woods, he loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed singing country music and playing guitar.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda, of Bedford; children, Kent Melvin and wife Tally of Bedford, Rob Melvin of Georgia, Derek Melvin and wife Susan of Bedford, Jeff Gregory of Judah and Crystal Gregory and her fiancé Jerry Webb of Bedford; a sister, Sharon Pate and husband Wayne of Bloomington; a brother, Jerry F. Melvin and wife Ruth of Bedford; grandchildren, Kyle Melvin, Logan and Mackenzie Melvin, Jesse Gwin and Chelsea Webb, all of Bedford and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one nephew, Mike Barger.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Dishman Cemetery.

Roger Keith Schultz, 69, of Bedford, died at 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born March 27, 1945, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Emmerson Schultz and Nina (Jones) Staggs. He married Betty Sue Box and she preceded him in death.

He retired from the City of Bedford Street Dept. and had worked for Indiana Limestone Co.

Survivors include three daughters, Pennie Reynolds and husband Bob of Bedford, Kim Phillips and husband Jay of Williams, and Teresa Schultz of Bedford; a son, Bryan Schultz and wife Brandi of Bedford; 14  grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven siblings; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his stepfather, Vernon Staggs; a son, Vernon Schultz; and three siblings.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Monday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Lewis Rice Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann Knox, 76, passed away at 1:41 p.m. Tuesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born Jan. 10, 1939, in Sullivan, she was the daughter of Francis R. and Opal (McDonnall) Marlowe. She married John Knox June 8, 1956.

Ann had been employed as a telephone operator, school bus driver, and was investigator and chief deputy for the Marion Township Trustee.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Indiana Township Association. She was a former member of Order of Eastern Star No. 503, Jobs Daughters, and LIFE Pantry board member.

Surviving are her husband, John Knox of Mitchell; daughter, Julia Leann (Michael) Butler of Wadesville; daughter-in-law, Anita Knox of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Julio Knox, Jonathon Knox, Haley Butler, Jordan Butler and Madison Butler; two great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia K. Taflinger of Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents; and son, Richard Carl Knox, preceded her in death.

Wanda L. Murphy

Wanda L. Murphy, 93, Mitchell, passed away Monday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born May 11, 1921, in Bedford Wanda was the eldest child of Walter H. and Hazel E. (Rodgers) Rager. She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1939. Wanda was married to William F. “Bill” Murphy Jr. on Sept. 8, 1943.

Following Bill’s service in the Pacific with the U. S. Army Air Corps, the couple settled near Rock Lick Creek where they farmed and raised their three children, one of whom tragically passed away in childhood. After Bill’s death in 1982, Wanda continued to live on the farm within a mile of her children and grandchildren, where she proudly remained for all but the last 15 months of her life.

Wanda was a member of the First Christian Church of Mitchell where she worked as a secretary for many years. She enjoyed painting and was a former member of the Lawrence County Art Association and Fleur de Lis. Above all, she was a devoted grandmother who will be remembered for her loving, involved presence and unique personality.

She was a hilarious storyteller, creator of prize-winning Halloween costumes, patient teacher in the art of homemade pie crusts, and prodigious collector of shoes. She played the ukulele. She wore leather driving gloves and disregarded the speed limit.

As a girl she convinced the neighbor kids that eating rose petals would give them the power to see fairies; later, she convinced her grandson that drinking carrot juice would give him X-ray vision. She once outran a buffalo. She took pride in her family and loved to brag about their achievements.

Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Jack D. and Margaret M. Murphy of Mitchell; her daughter, Joyce A. Chenoweth of Mitchell; her grandchildren, Kristen A. Murphy, Erin E. Murphy and Michael W. Murphy; her brother and sister-in-law, Walter H. and Wanda J. Rager, of Mitchell and seven nieces and nephews

Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Michael D. Murphy; her husband, Bill; and her brother and sister-in-law, Robert D. and Helen M. Rager.

Born July 27, 1940, in Mitchell, he was the son of Shelby Cleo and Anna (Davidson) Stevens. He married Mary L. Box Nov. 30, 1968.

Larry retired from Dana Corporation, and was a member of the Indiana National Guard.

She was born in Lawrence County on Aug. 22, 1925, to Otis W. and Mary E. (Miles) Hall. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1943. She married Alvy Tirey in Lawrence County on May 3, 1952, and he preceded her in death 1991.

Mildred had worked at Wal-Mart and Woolworth’s in Bedford; she was a member of Phi Beta Phi, and the First Baptist Church in Bedford.

Mary was born in Bedford, on Nov. 3, 1927, to Mary (Dilley) and Nelson Sears of Bedford. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1945 and attended Hanover College in Southern Indiana. She was a founding member of Kappa Kappa Sigma Service Sorority.

Mary wed Clifford Merrell on Aug.16, 1949. She was a homemaker who raised seven children after working for a time as a phone operator for Indiana Bell. Later in life she worked as a nurse’s aide for the Marion County Health Department.

Jerry Edwin Smith, 70, Pittsburgh, Pa., died Feb. 5 after a fight with cancer.

Dr. Smith was born June 27, 1944, in Florence, S.C., to John Edwin and Joy Helen (Wagner) Smith, and was raised in Bedford.

He graduated from Ball State University in Muncie, and taught at Ellsworth College, Iowa Falls, Iowa. He later received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Smith devoted his career to psychological counseling and education, providing his expert services to the citizens of Western Pennsylvania and elsewhere through St. Francis Medical Center, UPMC and other institutions as well as lecturing and in private practice.

Jerry is survived by his life partner of 35 years, Sean Kelly of Pittsburgh. He leaves a sister, Brenda Blackwood Kunzler; brother-in-law, Robert Kunzler; nephews, Jonathan (Erin) Blackwood and Marcus Blackwood; and a grand-niece, Emily Blackwood, all of Atlanta, Ga.; and nieces, Nan Cooper, Gina Topi and their families.

A talented musician in high school and college, Jerry was a member of the popular Indiana band, the Continentals. Jerry enjoyed Sarasota, Fla., and Vieques, Puerto Rico; and traveling anywhere, especially if he could sing Karaoke. Those who knew Jerry and his fashion sense will appreciate the cocktail napkins he had stating, “Life is Short. Buy the shoes.” He certainly took that advice. Jerry was much loved and has left his colorful and unique mark on so many of us. We will miss him far too much.

A memorial service is planned for Spring 2015.

Farrell Dean Sowder, 79, of Bedford, passed away at 7:24 a.m. on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Oct. 21, 1935, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Gerald and Thelma Sowder. He married Shirley Ann Deckard on Oct. 14, 1961 and she survives.

He was ordained on Sept. 14, 1971, as a minster of the Church of God. He has pastored Church of God congregations. He was an active member of the Donica Church of God where he has served as vice-chair, trustee, church council, Sunday school teacher and youth leader. He had a strong desire to lead people to come to know Christ and this was evident in the way he lived his life.

He was the retired owner of Fortner Pest Control, Inc. He was a former president of the Bedford Exchange Club and coached basketball for many years at the Bedford Boys Club.

Donald R. Nordhoff, 83, of Bedford, died at 11:39 a.m. Monday at his residence.

Born Nov. 23, 1931, in Jasper (Dubois County), he was the son of Joe B. Nordhoff and Valeta (Walton) Nordhoff.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford and a self-employed home builder.

Surviving are two sons, Mark Nordhoff and Scott (Ingrid) Nordhoff, both of Bedford; and one daughter, Kyle Terese Baxter of Austin, Texas; and their mother, Lee Etta Nordhoff of Bedford; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jon Robert Nordhoff; one daughter, Dona Kirk; two brothers, Thomas J. Nordhoff and Joe B. Nordhoff; one sister, Winifred Dickerson; and one granddaughter, Jamie Lee Baxter.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Rushville.

Ernest “Bob” Brown, 82,  Norman, passed away at 5:14 p.m. on Tuesday at his residence.

He was born April 1, 1932, in Lawrence County, the son of the late Ralph Oscar and Lula Mary (Fulps) Brown. He was married March 26, 1955, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Medora, to Bonnie England and she survives.

He was a member of Medora Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

He was retired from Cummins at Seymour. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict.

He loved NASCAR racing, hunting, fishing, and the outdoors.

Surviving with his wife, Bonnie Brown of Norman, are one son, Max Allen (Angie) Brown of Seymour; two daughters, Vickie (Nick) Hubbard and Zirita (Mike) Roberts, all of Bedford; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Earl (Janice) Brown and Eugene Brown, all of Bedford; three sisters, Irene (Bob) Sexton of Florida, Mary Alice (Donnie) Coffey of Vallonia and Evelyn Owens of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Randy Brown; one grandson, Jared Scott Hubbard; two brothers, Ray Brown and Rocky Brown; and two sisters, Anna Faye Stevens and Betty Sue Brown.

Jerry W. Lambrecht, 65, Bedford, died at 10:52 a.m. on Friday in Seymour.

Born Oct. 8, 1949, in Daviess County,  he was the son of Paul and Iva May (Brooks) Lambrecht. He married Brenda Sue Mitchell on June 5, 1969, and she passed away on June 1, 2014.

Jerry was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the Class of 1967 and a graduate of Purdue University in 1971.

He was a member of the Pinhook Church of Christ, serving as a Deacon.

Jerry worked as an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance Company for many years. He was a Trustee for Ivy Tech, Bloomington, a 40-year 4-H Leader, 40-year member of Lawrence County 4-H Board and a registered Guernsey breeder since 1959.

Surviving are four sons, Jeff (Missy) Lambrecht of Bedford, Jason (Leslie Geiser) Lambrecht of Bloomington, Jeremy (Heather) Lambrecht of Seymour and Jan (Amy) Lambrecht of Indianapolis; eight grandchildren, Morgan, Megan, Molly and Macey Lambrecht of Bedford, Dylan and Makenna Lambrecht of Seymour, Shelby and Cooper Lambrecht of Indianapolis; two brothers, Phillip (Ruth) Lambrecht of Brownsburg and Donald (Stefanie) Lambrecht of Bedford; and one sister, Judy Curren of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a sister, Barbara Arnold.

Oreda Keith, 88, of Bedford, went to be with Jesus at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday at her residence.

Born Dec. 25, 1926, in Wayne Co., Ky., she was the daughter of Mitt and Frona (Correll) Keith. She married Ira Keith on May 21, 1947 and he preceded her in death on June 1, 2008.

She was a homemaker, a cake decorator at Pfeffer’s Bakery in Bedford and a caregiver.

She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Springville.

Survivors include children, Delorise Bunch and husband William of Williams, Dewon Poole and husband Ralph “Frog” of Orleans, Dwight Keith and wife Becky of Fayetteville and Susan George of Bedford; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Born Oct. 9, 1924, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Glenn and Mary Leon (Brock) Richards. She married Gilbert “Gib” Wayne Wagner on March 18, 1944, and he survives.

She retired from Sears as a credit manager in 1980 and was a member of the First Baptist Church and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 50 years.

Survivors include her husband, “Gib”, of Ellettsville; four daughters, Bobbi Dailey of Ellettsville, Sherry Hudson and husband Phil and Sondra Wagner, all of Bloomington, and Donna Myers and husband Dr. Jim Myers of Johnson City, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Jeanette Hammersley-Stolz of Bloomington, Susie Hammersley, of Fort Myers, Fla., and Jennifer Houston and husband Greg of Jackson, Ga.; one grandson, Brandon Hudson and wife Cassie, of Bloomington;10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Concannon of Bedford; and a brother, John Dean Richards and wife Gail of Bedford.

Born Jan. 26, 1922, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Carl and Faye (Anderson) Fry. She married Linvel Ray on June 21, 1941, and he preceded her in death.

She had worked in the North Lawrence Community School System for 13 years.

She was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for over 50 years, and was a past church deaconess.

Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Moffett of Connersville; a grandson, Kyle Moffett of Connersville; nieces and nephews, including David Houpt, Patty Byers, Larry Benbow, Nancy Merchen, and several others; and cousins Dean Anderson, Gerald Fry and Marilyn Shull.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Joseph Fry; twin sister, Ilene Houpt; and sister, Louise Benbow.

He was a mechanic for the Lawrence County Highway Department and was a member of Eagles #654.

She was a member of Englewood Baptist Church and enjoyed spending time with her friends at Senior Citizens of Lawrence County. She also loved her cat, Baby.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Hackney of Bedford and Cathy (Jerry) Towle, of Bloomington; grandchildren, Danielle Towle of New Albany, and Denisa (Shannon) Childers of Bedford; and great-grandchildren, Jacey (Kamden) Sokeland of Evansville, and Abby Childers of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Hubert; two sons, Arnold Enochs and Michael Keith Huff; one daughter, Sandra Cranfield; two granddaughters, Lisa Samples and Sherry Pridemore; six brothers, Ervin Collier, Floyd Collier, Dewey McPherson, Howard Collier, Bascom Collier and Marvin Collier; and three sisters, Minnie Rutheford, Allie Boling and Nellie Brown.

She was born in Lawrence County on Aug. 31, 1929, to Ephraim and Louise (Rowe) Patton. Marian married Wendell L. Turner on Aug. 30, 1947, in Scottsburg, and he preceded her in death on June 14, 1998.

She was a homemaker and devoted member of the Avoca Baptist Church; she was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Anna E. Harter April 25, 1923 — Feb. 1, 2015 Anna Elizabeth Harter, 91, of Muncie, formerly of Leesburg, died Sunday evening at Morrison Woods Health Campus in Muncie. She was born April 25, 1923, in Bedford, the daughter of the late Bart and Lucile (Jackson) Short. Anna retired from AT&T (Indiana Bell) in 1978; Muncie office as a telephone operator. She was a member of the Indiana Bell Pioneer Club and the Red Hat Society. Anna was an avid golfer. She was a member of the North Webster United Methodist Church, where she was treasurer of her Sunday school class. Anna is survived by her son, Howard Alyn Cring (Cindy) of Muncie; a grandson, Justin Cring of Noblesville, a great-grandson Brayden Cring of Noblesville, three stepdaughters, Sally McClure (Bill) of Cicero, Lita Estes of Indianapolis, and Daylain Doan of Indianapolis; several stepgrandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard D. Cring in 1971; her second husband, Charles E. Harter in 1992; a daughter JoAnna Cring; a grandson, Jason Cring; three sisters Rachel Hudson, Ruth Glover, and Roberta Franklin; two infant brothers; and a stepdaughter Trudie Bernd. Funeral services will be at noon Friday at Garden View Funeral Home, with the Rev. Cindy Alte officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. February 03, 2015 Koleeta Tonkin Nov. 1, 1927 — Jan. 24, 2015 Koleeta Faye “Kiki” Hutton Tonkin, age 87, of Madison, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., and Bedford died at 1:50 a.m. Jan. 24, at the McGraw Center Hospice Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. She entered this life on Nov. 1, 1927, in Bedford, the loving daughter of the late Clarence Hutton and Helen Lockhart Woodward Hutton Keller. She was raised in Bedford and was a graduate of Louisville Junior Academy and Bradenton High School. On Dec. 6, 1945, she was united in marriage to John B. Maddox in Logansport. This marriage of 24 years was blessed with one daughter, Linda Lea and one son, John Curtis. Koleeta was employed with Crane Ammunition Depot from 1965-1970 in Crane, as a explosives handler. While living in Bradenton she enjoyed working as a hostess in various restaurants. In 1982 she moved to Madison, and enjoyed buying and selling antiques. She had owned and operated the Goodie Barn on First Street in downtown Madison for seven years and then owned and operated the Trolley Barn in downtown Madison on Main Street. Koleeta enjoyed restoring and remodeling homes most of her life. Her touch and flair in decorating was award winning. She enjoyed participating in the Tri-Kappa Historic Home Tours at Christmas and showcasing her homes. She enjoyed being a docent with Historic Madison, Inc. at various times of the year. Koleeta loved to cook and prepare delicious meals and share with neighbors and friends. She had an innate ability to find something special at a thrift store or yard-sale and incorporate the find into something beautiful and rare. Koleeta had a unique ability to make a costume or dress in a particular period and play the part well. She was fiercely loyal to her friends and would always help where needed. Koleeta enjoyed wintering in Florida with her son, John, and his family for the past several years. She had a great fondness for her poodles and was an excellent trainer. Koleeta was a member of the Bedford Seventh-day Adventist Church and now holds membership in the Madison Seventh-day Adventist Church. She had held membership in the Jefferson County Historical Society, the Madison Riverfront Development Committee and the Pearl Park Committee and had helped with Madison’s 175th Anniversary Celebration. She was affectionately known as “Kiki” to her close family and friends. Koleeta will be missed by her loving son, John Curtis Maddox and wife Beth Hughes Maddox of Jacksonville, Fla.; her stepdaughter, Sharon S. Joseph; her grandchildren, Brian Lance Cain, Angela Fair Cain Paris, Shannon Maddox Meadows and John Curtis “Curt” Maddox, Jr.; her great-granddaughters, Ashley Cain and Ava Meadows; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Hutton, died in 1961; her stepfather, Stephen “Pop” Keller, died Dec. 26, 2000; her mother, Helen Lockhart Woodward Hutton Keller, died Oct. 12, 2002; her daughter, Linda Lea Maddox Clark, died Oct. 8, 2008; her brother, the Rev. Clarence “Chuck” Ronald Hutton, died Jan.10, 1965; and her sister, Patsy Jean Roberts, died in 2002. February 02, 2015 Joshua Brumfield Oct. 1, 1939 — Jan. 31, 2015 Joshua Brumfield, 75, Mitchell, passed away at 8 p.m. Saturday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. Born Oct. 1, 1939, in Bono Township, he was the son of Clelle A. and Nettie (Smith) Brumfield. He married Linda M. McPike Aug. 30, 1963. Josh retired from General Motors and ministered at Old Union Christian Church, Guthrie Christian Church, Liberty Christian Church, First Christian Church, and was presently serving Saltlillo ,Christian Church. He was a member of the Limestone Christian Crusaders, and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1957. Surviving are his wife, Linda M. Brumfield of Mitchell; daughters, Julie Lynn (Guy) Wathen of LaGrange, Ky., Laura (Joe) Rogers of Yulee, Fla., and Brooke Blackwell of Mitchell; grandchildren, Andrew Kanach, Conner Blackwell and Kylee Blackwell; sisters, Susan (Kenny) Hendricks of Winston-Salem, N. C., and Bobette (Lowell) Grissom of O’Fallon, Mo. His parents, and sisters, Betsy Jane Doversberger and Lou Ann Richmond, preceded him in death. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Brother George Sites and Brother Don Mahan officiating.
