December 31, 2012 Ira ‘Lee’ Shafer June 16, 1940 — Dec. 28, 2012 Ira “Lee” Shafer, 72, of Bedford, died at 4:30 a.m. on Friday at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Born June 16, 1940, in Trimble County, Ky., he was the son of Charles and Mary Blanch Shafer. He was the former owner of the Early Bird Café in Bedford. Ira also raised horses and cattle, and bred horses for many years. He had been a member of the Pinto Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Society, and the American Legion. He loved gardening and woodworking. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He is survived by his long-term companion, Susan Jones of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. LaVerne Hackney Oct. 4, 1938 — Dec. 29, 2012 LaVerne Hackney, 74, of Bedford, passed away at 10:03 a.m. on Saturday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital. He was born in Paoli on Oct. 4, 1938, to Vern and Kathleen (Ivy) Hackney. He married Oneita G. (Perry) Hackney and she preceded him in death on May 19, 1995. LaVerne retired from Ford (Visteon) in Bedford. He was a US Air Force Veteran. Survivors include his son, Kent Hackney of Bedford; his daughter, Kyle Hackney of Bedford; two grandsons, Logan Hackney and Derrick Hackney, both of Bedford; one sister, Kay Hackney of Bedford; and one brother, Gary Hackney of Florida. December 30, 2012 Anna Lois Wever April 9, 1916 — Dec. 28, 2012 Anna Lois Wever, 96, of Springville, passed away Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at the IU Health Hospice House in Bloomington. Born April 9, 1916, in Lawrence County, Indiana, the daughter of Michael Lawrence Whitted and Hattie (Jones) Whitted. Anna was a homemaker and loved to garden and enjoyed flowers. She was a member of the Popcorn Christian Church. Surviving relatives include her children, Robert David Wever (Joyce) of Ooltewah, Tennessee; Roland Lee Wever (Carolyn) of Springville, Ruby May Hubbard of Bloomington, Ruth Ann Bailey (Jerry) of Bloomington, Roy Milburn Wever (Connie) of Ellettsville, Rita Kay Hash (Bob) of Ellettsville, Roger Wayne Wever of Springville and Rena Joy Ogle (Terry) of Springville. She has 23 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Milburn Wever on May 10, 2012, one son-in-law and one great-grandson. Tolbert July 18, 1940 — Dec. 27, 2012 Kenneth W. “Kenny” Tolbert, 72, of Mitchell, died on Thursday at his residence. Born July 18, 1940, in Bedford, he was the son of Claude and Martha (Beavers) Tolbert. He married Debrah Rayhill in 1980, and she survives. He retired from Saddlebrook Golf Course, where he worked maintaining the greens and the landscaping. Surviving are his wife, Debrah Tolbert of Mitchell; one son, Russell Tolbert of Brazil; two daughters, Lisa Scott of Mitchell, and Lori (Chris) Bowles of Bedford; three brothers, Ron Tolbert of Mitchell, Dan Tolbert of Port Charlotte, Fla., and James Tolbert of Sarasota, Fla.; three sisters, Gail (Willie) Gallagher, Patricia (Mike) Bledsoe, and Sheila Sojourner; seven grandchildren, Kayla Tolbert, Garrett Tolbert, Jacob Ledgerwood, Alyssa Terry, and Zach, Alex and Nathaniel Bowles; and several nieces and nephews. December 28, 2012 Mary Atchison June 23, 1922 — Dec. 22, 2012 Mary Ruth Atchison passed into the presence of the Lord on Dec. 22. at 5:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Hospital in Bryan, Texas. She was born the daughter of Charles and Nora Collins Watterson, of the Georgia community, Mitchell, on June 23, 1922. She married Paul Phipps on Oct. 2, 1937, later she married John F. Goldsberry on April 7, 1978, and lastly she married Leland Atchison in 1986, all preceded her in death. She attended Huron School and worked for a time at Reliance in Mitchell and Trav-Ler in Orleans. She also worked for WT Grants Department Store, in addition to being a homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Lynn Menville of Somerville, Texas, two sons, Paul G. Phipps of Lexington and Retired Col. Melvin L. Phipps of Montgomery, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Madge Reynolds and Norma Tincher of Mitchell and Lorene Morrow of Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, son, Clyde Lavern Phipps; sisters, Adah Schmidt and Clara Bryant; and brothers, John, Noble, Lester, James, Isom and Floyd Watterson. December 27, 2012 Betty Jane Bolton Feb. 28, 1924 — Dec. 23, 2012 Betty Jane Bolton, 88, of Johnson Christian Village in Bedford died at 10:18 a.m., on Sunday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital. Born February 28, 1924, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Guy and Anna Bridwell. She married Jack W. Bolton on November 25, 1948. He preceded her in death on September 28, 2010. Betty worked as an inserter for the Bedford Times-Mail and collected and sold Avon. She was a loving wife and Grandma and enjoyed being with people. She attended Englewood Baptist Church and Hillcrest Christian Church in Bedford. Survivors include one son, Gary J. Bolton and his wife, Pat of Fayetteville, Georgia. She had two grandchildren, Brent Bolton, and his wife Heidi of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Beth Ann Webb, and her husband Brian of Anderson, Indiana. She had six great-grandchildren, Grace, Hannah, Jack and Ben Bolton of Fayetteville, Georgia; Brynlee Webb of Anderson, and Ben Webb of Prague, Czech Republic. Rettia Hall July 18, 1918 — Dec. 24, 2012 Rettia Hall, 94, of Norman, passed away at 8:15 p.m, December 24, 2012, at the Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown. Rettia had attended the Norman Community Church at Norman. She had worked at Morgan Packing Company and at the Clearspring High School. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and quilting. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Family was a very important part of her life. Born July 18, 1918, in Lawrence County, she was a daughter of Elmer and Hurley (Fender) Fleetwood. On July 6, 1938, in Brownstown, she married Glenn Hall and he preceded her in death on Oct. 26, 1982. Survivors include two sons, Jerry (Carolyn) Hall of Norman and Dan (Jody) Hall of Brownstown; nine grandchildren, Natalie Hall, Mark Hall, Mike Hall, Christie Hinton, Kim Fredenburg, Jeff McKinney, Valarie Marcott, Jonathan Hall and Chelsie Hall; 11 great-grandchildren, Chris Trevino, Andy Hall, Cory Hall, Nicholas Hall, Ryan Hinton, Brittany Hinton, James Hinton, Ashley Foxworthy, Evan Foxworthy, Whitley Hall Marcott, Braden Marcott and one great-great-grandchild. Duane Sharp L.T. Duane Sharp, age 67, of Bedford, passed away Dec. 25, 2012, after a brief battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Marilyn Sharp of Six Lakes, Mi. He is survived by his children, Sonya (Sharp) Roach of Mitchell; Karla and John Finn of Grand Rapids, Mi., and Duane Ivan Sharp of Bedford; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Duane was retired from Miller Construction. He was a member of the Boat and Canoe Club and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Duane loved riding his motorcycle and fishing with his friends. Born on August 18, 1954, to George and Twila (Naylor) Mosier. He worked at Bedford North Lawrence Community Schools from 1974 until he retired. He was a member of The Bedford Boat and Sportsman Club, a former member of the Eagles Post No. 654, where he held the office of Trustee for a number of years. He coached sports in Oolitic and AAU Basketball. Since retirement he has enjoyed IU Basketball, NASCAR, and returning to the stands to cheer on his little buddy, Austin, in sports. He was born in Bedford to Marvin and Shirley Sons and Harold & Anna Neideffer, both Marvin and Harold preceded him in death. Gordon was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the Class of 1971. He worked at Broadview Bowl for 30 years in Bedford, was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Bedford. Gordon loved being an usher for the church and being involved with Keenagers at First Assembly of God Church. He loved IU basketball and attended his nieces and nephews school activities and sporting events. Gordon will be missed by so many friends and family. Williams Wisley, 86, formerly of Bloomington, passed away Friday, December 21, 2012, at Greenwood Village South. She was born December 10, 1926, in Lawrence County, Indiana, to Willis and Rozella (Flinn) Williams. On June 3, 1949, she was married to Oral Wisley in Bedford, Indiana. They were married 51 years. Wilma was a graduate of Tunnelton High School in Lawrence County. She spent her professional career with RCA at various times from the late 1940s until retiring in 1984; Smithville School in the late 1960s and early 70s; and with the 3-D Store in the domestics department during the late 70s. She was a member of the Smithville Christian Church, and was an avid Indiana University basketball fan. She resided in Greenwood, Indiana, for the last seven years. Wilma is survived by her two sons, Thomas Wisley and his wife Debra of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and Daniel Wisley and his wife Nancy of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Regan Allenspach (Brian), Jill DeBow (Tim), and Katherine Wisley; and great-grandchildren, Riley and Baeley Allenspach. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oral; grandson, Adam Wisley; brothers, Orin, Oscar, Loniel and Harold Williams; sisters, Evalou Root, Oatie Perry, Helen Williams and Irma Mae Sears. Gary was a custodian for Monroe Community Schools and was a volunteer fireman with Van Buren Township in Monroe County. He was a graduate of Bloomfield High School in 1958, and was a past member of the Odd Fellows in Bloomfield. Survivors include his son, Michael D. Born Nov. 12, 1969 in Oswego, N.Y., she was the daughter of Catherine (Hibbert) Alton and John Anthony Loomis, and was later adopted by Edward F. Alton. She was a graduate of Oswego High School, Oswego, N.Y.; and was a stay-at-home mom. She was an avid gardener. She loved arts and crafts, from etching glass to making quilts for her family. She loved to read, travel, and held happy memories of a trip to the Holy Land, Hawaii and many historic places in the United States. In 1988, she and another member organized a walking club in the East Side AARP, which remained active for more than 17 years. She also had a great love and passion for Indiana University basketball. One of her favorite things in life was helping others, especially children. Rogers Aug. 16, 1940 — Dec. 15, 2012 Judith Ann “Judy” Rogers, 72, Dublin, passed away on Saturday at Reid Hospital in Richmond. A daughter of the late Winifred M. and Marie Edna (Blackburn) Hubbard, Judy was born in Bedford on Aug. 16, 1940. Judy was raised in North Vernon and attended school there until 10th grade, then graduated from Vernon High School with the Class of 1958. She attended Elkhart College for one year and then became certified as a lab technician. Judy worked as a lab technician for several physicians, healthcare labs and hospitals including Community Hospital in Indianapolis, Ball Hospital in Muncie and Riverview Hospital in Noblesville. Judy and her husband Jack were owner-operators of Posey Oak Furniture Store and Coast to Coast Hardware in Mount Vernon, Indiana. Judy and Jack moved to the Dublin community in 2001 Judy was an avid reader and bowler and in her spare time she enjoyed spending time outdoors — gardening, bird watching, boating, water skiing, swimming and camping. She and her husband spent the winter months in Florida, where she was a member of the Red Hat Society in Ruskin. She was also a member of the Tri Kappa Sorority in Greenfield, the Model A Car Club and former member of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce. Judy attended the Cambridge City Christian Church. She was a licensed practitioner in real estate and an insurance agent associate, retiring after over 40 years of service. She was blessed with sharing her home with her granddaughter and four great-grandchildren, giving her love and care every day. Nancy graduated from Bedford High School class of 1953 and received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University. Nancy retired on June 30, 2001, after 18 years as the Administrative Assistant in the Philosophy Department at Indiana University. She was an avid IU fan and very loyal to the university. Moss, the former of whom attended IU and performed with the Singing Hoosiers with Hoagy Carmichael, Nancy and and her husband Bud established the James M. Fields and Anthony J. Moss Fellowship in 1998. Once the fellowship is active, it will support a graduate student in Philosophy concentrating in either ethics or history of philosophy. Nancy was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and a previous member of the First Christian Church in Bedford. Shirley, or Granny as she was lovingly known by many, was born and raised in Bedford, the daughter of Clay and Marjorie (Anderson) Williams-Stevens. Shirley was married to Donald Brinegar for many years, and he survives. Granny was a woman of many trades and talents from sewing blue jeans at Fines to baking cookies and cakes in the bakery she helped her daughter Debra to grow. She loved being with her family, having dinner or just a glass of tea. She was always busy planting flowers in her yard, sewing or reading. She loved being outdoors and taking walks through her woods. She was a strong woman of God, and loved and served the Lord from a young child. You could always count on her to listen and pray for you. She knew her Bible well and was quick to offer you scripture for strength, comfort and guidance. Like the time 30 years ago, I (granddaughter Crystal) hated to go to kindergarten. She prayed for me and tore a scripture from her well-worn Bible, and placed it in my shoe, Genesis 28:15. She knew God’s word would bring me strength, and help me to make it not only through kindergarten, but through the rest of my life. David was born in Lawrence County on March 21, 1952, to Emery and Lurline (Terrell) Cooper, He married Laurie Gaiser-Staggs on June 17, 1995 in Gatlinburg, Tennessee and she survives. He attended Bedford High School and Indiana University, David was a certified welding inspector (CWI), David started on the pipeline as a welder’s helper with his brothers Ron and John Cooper in the early 1970’s. They traveled from Texas to Alaska with the pipeline. He worked as a welder for 19 years at Indiana Steel in Bedford. He returned to pipeline construction in 2007 as a Certified Welding Inspector, with his brother John Cooper and they traveled through many states working on the pipeline. David loved to travel and his work on the pipeline. He also enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR and golf on TV, and he also enjoyed going to the drive-in. Survivors include his wife, Laurie Cooper of Bedford, two stepsons, John H. (Niki) Staggs of Bedford, and Jeffrey S. (Leslee) Staggs of Bedford; brother, John W. Sanders, 90, of Shoals, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 6:06 p.m. on Saturday at the Loogootee Nursing Center. He married Ruby (Harder) Boyd on Aug. 16, 1962, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Loogootee, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 6, 2011. Upon completion of his education in Martin County schools, he enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Knox, Ky., serving in the armored infantry during World War II, serving in the European Theater in France and Germany. His military service was exemplary, having received the American Defense Ribbon, FMAE Theater Ribbon with two bronze stars, good conduct ribbon, and the armored infantry badge ribbon. Mr. Sanders was a farmer in Martin County for more than 45 years. He and his wife were avid bowlers and enjoyed all of their bowling family. He was a dedicated member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and served on the church council and in various other leadership positions within the church. He was a member of the Shoals American Legion Post No. 61 and White River Co-Op, serving as board member for eight years. Bill was born May 9, 1939, in Owensburg, and was the son of Ivan and Mary Louise (Lehman) Buher. Bill was a 1957 graduate of Oolitic High School and graduated from Indiana University in 1967. He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving from 1962-1964 and was in the Army Reserve from 1964-1968. Bill worked for 42 years with Ralph Rogers (Rogers Group) as Equipment Director, retiring in 2000. After his retirement from Rogers, Bill worked for 10 years as a shuttle driver at Curry Auto Center retiring from there in 2010. Bill currently worked as a funeral assistant at The Funeral Chapel. He had also worked at IU Basketball games as the 35 second shot clock operator since 1995 and at IU Football as the scoreboard operator since 1985. Bill was a member and Elder at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. He served on several boards and belonged to numerous groups over the years including Food Bank Board, Monroe County Fair Board, Youth For Christ Board, Northside Exchange Club, Monroe County Library Board, Monroe County Fall Festival Association, American Legion and AmVets, member of the Veteran’s Honor Guard, and the NRA. Bill was also very proud of his time he spent with the Veteran’s Honor Flights to Washington, DC. Bill is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 51 years, Mary Elizabeth (Carson) Buher of Bloomington; two sons and their wives Michael Ray and Julia Carole Buher of Bel Air, Md., and Bradley William and Lita Karyl Buher of Macon, Ga.; grandchildren, Jacob William, Zachary Keith, Madison Rae, Brady Kyle and Rayna Drew; sister, Mary Frances Wrightsman; brother and sister-in-law, James Howard and Rebecca Ann Buher,; and nieces and nephews, Melynda Buher, Jennifer Buher, Jack Parsley and Kathy Ward. Lowell Stailey Jan. 21, 1941 — Nov. 29, 2012 F. Lowell Stailey, 71, of 981 Stars Blvd., Bedford, passed away at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at St. Vincent Heart Center in Carmel. Born Jan. 21, 1941, in Oolitic, he was the son of Jesse and Pearl (Moore) Stailey. He married Ruthie Lynn on Aug. 3, 1959, and she survives. He retired as a millwright in the skilled trades department at General Motors in Bedford. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Bedford Elks Lodge, Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and the Shriners International. Survivors include his wife, Ruthie of Bedford; a son, Mike Stailey and wife Debbie of Greenwood; a daughter, Julie D’Alesio and husband Fred of Sausalito, Cali9f.; two sisters, Ruth Plummer and Jeanne Speer and husband Fred, all of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Dr. Kregg Burris officiating. Woodard Charles L. “Lin” Woodard, age 85, of Bedford, passed away on Friday at his residence. Born in St. Charles, Va., he was the son of Lawrence Dee and Ida Betty (Napier) Woodard. Charles worked in coal mines and logging in Virginia, then coming to Indiana, he worked at Nehi Bottling Co. and General Motors in Indianapolis. He retired from GM in 1992 and moved to Bedford shortly after retiring, He was a member of the Christian Church, and a U.S. Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Blanche E. (Gardner) Woodard. He is also survived by a daughter, Sandra (Eddie) Burkhart; two sons, Charles Ray (Valerie) Woodard and Michael (Billie Jo) Woodard; and a stepson, Jimmy Hall; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings Funeral Services will be on Monday at Cresthaven Funeral Home.
