Norma Louise Christopher Thomas
March 11, 1926 – December 30, 2024
Norma Louise Christopher Thomas, age 98, of Seymour, IN, passed away on December 30, 2024, at the Lutheran Community Home in Seymour.
Norma was born on March 11, 1926, in Jackson County, to the late Edwin and Esther (Siefker) Thomas. Norma married Leslie Christopher in 1945 and shared 55 wonderful years until his death October 9, 2000. She then married Robert H. Thomas June 25, 2010, who also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Thomas was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, where she served on the Memorial Committee for many years and was past president of the Immanuel Guild. She volunteered at Schneck Medical Center as receptionist from 1988 until recent years, served on the Health Builder Foundation (Schneck) Board, served on ARC Board of Jackson County, and Christian Women’s Inc. She also helped with the Japanese Ministry. She was employed at Seymour Daily Tribune, J.C. Penney (17 years), the Ark Book and Gift, Community Greeting, and served as a tutor at Jackson Elementary School.
Norma enjoyed traveling, golf, crafts, knitting and vacations in Florida. She loved the English language, finding enjoyment exploring American slang, idioms and metaphors. Dimensional Art was a passion of hers as well as making friends with Japanese ladies, helping them learn our culture and teaching E.S.L.
Survivors include her children, Diane Brunovsky (Anthony), Newton, NJ; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Christopher (Gary), Seymour, IN; brother, Larry Thomas (Ruth), Seymour, IN; four granddaughters, Kim Jones (Brian), Columbus, IN, Michele Kelly (Ryan), Boonton, NJ, Amy Salvia (Thomas), Augusta, NJ, Julie Daher (Michael), Los Angeles, CA; and nine great grandchildren.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Esther Thomas; her husband, Leslie Christopher and her husband, Robert Thomas; her sons, Gary Christopher and Joe Christopher; sister, Marjorie Patman; and granddaughter, Lorissa Ann Brunovsky.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 11:30am, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 605 S. Walnut St., Seymour IN. The family will receive guests from 4-7pm on Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Burkholder Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes, 419 N Chestnut St., Seymour IN, and again at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 10:30am, until the time of service. Burial will immediately follow at Lutheran Cemetery.

Donald E. Scott
Donald E. Scott, 81 of Oolitic, passed away on Sunday December 29, 2024, at his residence. Donald was born in Bedford on April 8, 1943, to William and Marie Scott. Donald married Connie Stailey on June 6, 1964, and she survives. Donald was a graduate of Oolitic High School Class of 1961, he was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church, he worked at RCA in Bloomington for 40 years, he retired in 2005 from the North Lawrence Community Schools.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Connie Scott of Oolitic, two daughters, Shelley (Bob) Ikerd of Oolitic, and Kristy (Sam) Miller of Bedford, three grandchildren, Kaleigh (TJ) Lee, Scott Miller and Marley Williams, and Tyler (Sydney) Miller, two great grandchildren, Hadley Lee and Harper Lee, one sister, Gloria Elliott of Indianapolis.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, William Scott, and two sisters, Barbara Turpen, and Betty Staggs.

Paul A. Chambers
Paul A. Chambers, Jr., 77 of Bloomington passed away at his residence on Sunday December 29, 2024. He was born in Lebanon on April 5, 1947, to Paul A. Chambers, Sr., and Daisy Chambers. Paul married Cindy Lou on July 20, 2014, and she survives. Paul retired from GE in Bloomington where he was a tool & die maker after 43 years, he was a veteran of the US Army, he was a member of the F.O.P. Lodge, he was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy Lou of Bloomington, one son, Paul A. Chambers, III of Bloomington, one daughter, Lori (Tony) Nicholson of Bedford, three grandchildren, Taylor Chambers, Alex Nicholson, and Macee Nicholson, one sister, Erma Stevens of Bloomington, four stepdaughters, Angie Bault of Spencer, Vickie Miller of Alaska, Syndi McGinn of Ellettsville, and Joani Solis Powell of Bloomington, 17 step grandchildren, and 11 step great grandchildren.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Wilma Hodge, and Pauline Chambers.

Larry E. Younger

Larry E. Younger, 63, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, December 28, 2024, at I.U. Health Hospital of Bloomington. He was born January 10, 1961, to James “Jim” and Mary (Stipp) Younger.
Surviving to cherish Larry’s memory are his first cousins, Bill (Amanda) Gillum, Mike (Ann) Gillum, Loretta (David) Bailey, Mary (Benny) Barnett, Mike (Belinda) Swango, Jeff Swango, Andy (Ranae) Sanders and Carol (Jim) McKinney; and his second cousins, Christy (Jeff) Williams, Joey (Pam) Younger, Karen (Bobby) Williams, and Wendy (Scott) Ramsey.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
Larry was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School, class of 1979, and was a former bus driver for the North Lawrence Community School Corp. He attended Donica Church of God for several years. Larry loved talking, racing and sports.
Funeral services for Larry will be held Friday, January 3, 2025, at 1:00pm, at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes in Bedford. Burial will follow at Pleasant Run Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, beginning at 10:00am until the hour of service at Ferguson-Lee Chapel.

Charles Rickey “Rick” Bennett
MITCHELL – Charles Rickey “Rick” Bennett, 71, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2024, at his residence.
Born August 20, 1953, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Cletis Leon and Virginia M. (Hall) Bennett.
Rick was a graduate of Mitchell High School. He worked at Carpenter Body Works and retired from Dana Corporation. Rick enjoyed watching football, music, and singing karaoke. He liked cars and working in the garage. Rick was kind hearted and strong-willed; he was one of a kind and broke the mold.
Surviving are his wife, Connie Sue (Roll) Bennett of Mitchell; children, Charles Clinton Bennett of St. Augustine, Florida, Jessie Trevor (Heather) Bennett of Mitchell, and Jackie Leatherman of Paoli; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and sisters, Marsha Kay Mundy of Mitchell and Nancy Esther (Richard) Edwards of Lawrenceport.
His parents; son, Michael Leatherman; siblings, Diana Sue Hall and Larry Leon Bennett; and brother-in-law, Dave Mundy, preceded him in death.
Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 2, at Lawrenceport Cemetery with Pastor Dwight Dunbar officiating.

Betty J. Sipes
March 11, 1937 – December 28, 2024
Bedford – Betty J. Sipes, 87, of Bedford, passed away at 3:54 pm on Saturday, December 28, 2024, at her residence.
Born March 11, 1937, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Russell and Thelma (Kirk) Barrett. She married Ralph E. Sipes on March 13, 1955, and he preceded her in death on November 6, 2003. She was a custodian at Indiana University and a strong believer in the Lord Jesus Christ as her savior.
Survivors include two daughters, Tami J. Hanna (Brad), of Bloomington and Lou Ann Sipes of Bedford; her companion, Robert D. New, of Bedford. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Susan Sipes and a sister, Kay M. Hedrick.

MITCHELL – Helen LuDean Hannie, 79, passed away Friday, December 27, 2024, at Majestic Care Bedford.
Born July 24, 1945, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Marion E. Pruett and Florence Pruett. She married Donald Eugene Hannie on January 16, 1976, and he survives.
Helen had been a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Hannie of Mitchell; daughters, Ella Jean Kelley Shotts, Kimberly Crawley, and Danaile Crawley; grandchildren, Steven Beuley and Delila Lewis; and siblings, Lauren Hicks, Sandy Swindle, Tonya Dillock; and Sterling “Tony” A. Purdue.
Her parents preceded her in death.

Kevin James Chase
December 20, 1984 – December 26, 2024
Bloomington - Kevin James Chase, 40, of Bedford, Indiana, passed away on December 26, 2024, in Bloomington, Indiana. Born on December 20, 1984, in Bedford, Indiana, Kevin was the youngest of four sons to Julie (Blackwell) and Alan Chase of Bedford.
Kevin grew up in Bedford and later lived in Redding, California, before returning to Indiana and settling in Bloomington. As a youth, Kevin excelled in athletics and was known for his wonderful smile and sweet, gentle soul. He found great joy in worshiping the Lord and was a gifted preacher who inspired others with his faith. Kevin loved reading and writing, cherished sports, and enjoyed fellowship with others. He was blessed to be a father and loved his children.
Kevin is survived by his mother, Julie Chase, of Bedford; his father, Alan Chase and wife, Karen, of Bedford; his brothers, Kyle Chase and wife, Kyle, of West Baden, Indiana, Kory Chase of Bedford, Indiana, and Kip Chase and wife, Nicole, of Indianapolis, Indiana; and his beloved children, Kenton Chase, Marlee Chase, and Skyla Chase of Salem, Indiana; nephews, Kannon, Konner, Jack, Andrew and Will Chase; and his paternal grandmother, Rhoda Chase. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Richard Chase of Bedford, Indiana and Jack and Janice Blackwell of Bedford, Indiana.
Visitation for Kevin will be held Monday, December 30, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Bedford, IN. Followed by his funeral service at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Bonnie Lee Mullinax

Mitchell – Bonnie Lee Mullinax, 83, of Mitchell, passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born August 4, 1941, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Vernie and June (Thompson) Kirkman. She married Donald Lee Mullinax, Sr. on May 15, 1964, and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and member of Bond’s Chapel Church in West Baden.
Survivors include six children, Cynthia Dalton (Steven J.), of Bedford, Donald Lee Mullinax, Jr. (Vivian), of Springville, Jon Darrin Mullinax (Roberta), of Bedford, Joe David Mullinax (Hope), of Mitchell, Jennifer Ellis, of Paoli, Leland Mullinax (Tori), of Mitchell; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vernie Kirkman (Marsha), of Orleans and Orvis Kirkman, of Indianapolis; her dog, Buddy. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers, Jonathan and Jim Kirkman; a sister, Ruth (in infancy) and a daughter, Macylan Layne.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 31st at Bond’s Chapel Church in West Baden with Rob Martindale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Bedford – Anna J. Reeves, 90, of Bedford, formerly of Springville, passed away at 7:45 am on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at Stonebridge Health Campus.
Born July 23, 1934, she was the daughter of Earl and Hazel (Baker) Parker. She married James W. Reeves on June 14, 1952, and he preceded her in death on October 8, 2000. She retired from I.U. in 2002 as a custodian in the musical arts building. She was an avid I.U. basketball fan and a long time member of the Oolitic Church of Christ.
Survivors include one daughter, Jane Terrill, of Bedford; a son, Melvin E. (Karen) Reeves, of Springville; six granddaughters, Amanda Donahue (Sean Prewitt), Heather Terrill, Stephanie Pritchett, all of Bedford, Jennifer Grunewald (Matt), of Daphne, AL, and Maria Mull (Nate), of Evansville, Kristina Holobowski (Nate), of Fishers; great-grandchildren, Austin Holmes (Jalynn), of Bedford, Katelyn Stewart (Kirk), of Medora, Maddilyn Donahue (Tyson Shoopman), of Bedford, and Carter Donahue, of Clarksville, GA; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Wanda Kay Fountain, of Bedford; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one grandson, James W. Reeves, sisters, Deloris Lewis and Katherine Marley; a daughter, Elizabeth Pritchett; a brother-in-law, Dale Marley.

Doris Colovos Schulte
October 28, 1930 – December 22, 2024
Doris Colovos Schulte, 94, passed away at Morristown Manor on Sunday, December 22, 2024. She was born on October 28, 1930, in Bowling Green, KY, to the late Gus Colovos and Ruth Evelyn (Harrison) Colovos.
Doris graduated from high school in Bowling Green, KY. She moved to Seymour, IN, in the late 1950’s. Doris worked at Stoner’s Fashions in Seymour from 1972 to 1987. In November of 1987, Doris opened D’s Woman World in Seymour and worked there until 1996.
Doris was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Seymour, Tri-Kappa Sorority, the Garden Club of Indiana, Seymour Country Club and Seymour Elks Club. She also enjoyed playing Bridge and Golf.
Surviving to cherish her memory is her son, Michael Schulte (Dennis Youngs); sister, Patricia Newcom; and several nieces and nephews.
Doris is preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Schulte; and her parents, Gus and Ruth (Harrison) Colovos.
Funeral services for Doris will be held Friday, December 27, 2024, at 2:00pm, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 605 S. Walnut Street, Seymour, IN, with Rev. Philip Bloch officiating. Interment will take place at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery immediately following the service. Visitation will also be on Friday, from 12:00pm until the time of service at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Larry E. Riggle
November 16, 1942 – December 22, 2024
Bedford – Larry E. Riggle, 82, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Paoli Health & Living Center.
Born November 16, 1942, he was the son of Francis M. and Doris (Terrell) Riggle. He graduated from Fayetteville High School.
He retired from the National Gypsum Company as a fork lift operator. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961 and served during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1966 with the rank of Lance Corporal.
Survivors include a daughter, Larissa (Johnny) Dona, of Bedford; a brother, Ralph (Ada) Riggle, of Williams; three grandchildren, Jaden (Destiny) Riggle,Haley and Ethan Dona; a great-grandson, Darrin Riggle. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Frances Craig and Charlotte Ross, a step-son, Darrin Jones.

Helen Lucille Heffernan
MITCHELL – Helen Lucille Heffernan, 77, passed away Friday, December 20, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Jasper.
Born February 15, 1947, in Indianapolis, Helen was the daughter of J. Walter and Lucille (Robison) Lauer. She married James “Jim” Heffernan on January 17, 1970 and he survives.
Helen was a 1965 graduate of Scecina Memorial High School and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She had worked as a career administrative assistant, retiring from the Internal Revenue Service as an executive secretary. Helen later worked as the secretary for St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was very active in her volunteer work, volunteering at the Bedford Regional Medical Center, for her church, and for the Ladies of Columbus.
Surviving are her husband, Jim Heffernan of Mitchell; children, Anne Marie (Brian) Simpson of Exeter, New Hampshire, and Daniel Robert (Lena Campbell) Heffernan of Exeter, New Hampshire; grandchildren, Garrett Simpson, Sam Simpson, and Campbell Heffernan; siblings, Tom (Sherry) Lauer of West Des Moines, Iowa, Elizabeth Bowman of New Palestine, Indiana, Therese Bowman of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews; in-laws, Lin Lauer of Orlando, Florida, and Marcia Lauer of New Palestine, Indiana.
Her parents; siblings, Mary Ann Meacham, Joseph Lauer, Paul Lauer, and John Lauer; in-laws Ron Bowman, Bob Bowman, and Kate Pachmayr, preceded her in death.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 27, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Jegan Peter, Deacon Dave Reising, and Deacon Tom Scarlett officiating. Cremation will follow. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis will take place at a later date.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center. The Rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m.

Abby M. Eggers, 62 of Bedford passed away on December 8, 2024, at IU Bloomington Hospital. She was born in Bedford on May 4, 1962, to Ray Phillips and Lena (Morrow) Phillips. Abby was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Lena Smith of Mitchell, four grandchildren, Tianna Storm, Ashley King, Brooklyn Eisele, and Kelsey Eisele, three sisters, Carolyn Ice of Kansas, Linda Simpson of Birdseye, and Melissa Phillips of Mitchell.

Rebecca L. Lovellette, 66, of Bedford, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2024. She was born on May 12, 1958, in Bedford, to the late Harvey Taylor Pillow and Janet Marcell Edgar.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Selena (William) Wampler and Donald Lovellette; and grandchildren, Hailey Lovellette, Katie Lovellette, Damon Johnson and Maxwell Wampler.

Daniel C. Schmidt “SMITTY”
Daniel C Schmidt, “SMITTY” 79, passed away on December 16th, 2024, at his home with his children at bedside. Daniel was born in Bedford, to John D. Schmidt & Betty J. (Gambrell) Schmidt. He was an all-natural easy goer’ that loved history, nature, and cruising where the road took him. After his early years in the military & working as an auto body man, he went on to master many trades and later was known for his work as an independent equipment operator that he did successfully for many years. He loved a good challenge of fixing something when it broke, no matter how tedious the repair. Though his biggest accomplishment when asked, was being able to watch his children grow up. His last years were spent enjoying the outdoors, eating good food, shooting firearms and fishing with his boy, gardening with his daughter and helping her with whatever projects she had going on whether by verbal support or just taking over doing it himself.
He is survived by his two children, daughter Emily, and son, his little boy no matter big,’ Jeremy. Both of Bedford. A sister, Nancy (Greg) Ashley, Brother David (Kathy) Schmidt of FL, and brother Winston (Liz) Schmidt, OH. He was proceeded in death by both mom and dad, little brother Joe Blaine, and so many friends, including lifelong buddy Fred Baker, who he can’t wait to see.
Daniel wanted to be remembered as he was, so cremation was chosen, no service to be held. His daughter asks to consider donating to the American Pulmonary Association, a nonprofit who focuses on providing treatment to people with hypertension when they cannot obtain help in traditional ways, in his memory.

Peggy Ann Wood
MITCHELL – Peggy Ann Wood, 86, passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at White River Lodge.
Born June 24, 1938, in Huron, she was the daughter of Gilbert and Gladys (Tolbert) Tincher. She married James R Wood on April 23, 1957, and he preceded her in death on September 18, 2021.
Peggy was a 1956 graduate of Huron High School. She had worked as a homemaker for Hoosier Uplands, and at Travelers as a cashier. Peggy greatly enjoyed collecting antiques, cookie jars, cookbooks, quilts, and owl figurines. She was an active gardener and was a fixture of the Huron Alumni banquets. Peggy loved animals and enjoyed feeding and caring for her stray cats. She was of the Christian faith.
Surviving is her son, Warren Wood of Bedford.
Her parents; husband; son, James Wood; and daughter, Vanessa Wood, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 20, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Dwight Dunbar officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Charles R. Mays

Bedford – Beloved husband, Charles R. Mays, 69, of Bedford, passed from this earth on Monday, December 16, 2024.
Born March 13, 1955, in St. Louis, MO. He retired after a 20-year career with the U.S. Army, ending his service as a Platoon Sargeant. He also retired as a Textile Foreman from the Terre Haute United States Federal Prison.
Charles was a remarkable handyman and it was often said that he could have built a home with his contractor company, laughingly called “Better Than It Was” home improvement.
He was an avid volunteer with State Parks and U.S. Fish and Wildlife for 11 years, serving from Vermont to Alaska and Florida to local State Parks. He loved camping with a passion all over the United States.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Barbara Mays; children, Jamie (Scott) Lofton, Jon (Cathy) Mays, Jordan (Katherine) Mays; grandchildren, Zach, Paige, Cady, Christian and Kate; a sister, Brenda Dirden of Jonesboro, IL; a brother, Donnie Thompson of Anna, IL; sisters-in-law, Regina Dyke, Vickie (John) Vermillion, Terri (Josh) Neighbors and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Wallace; a sister-in-law, Maria Bailey and a niece, Erin Neighbors.

Bedford – Dairell Scott Fultz, 82, of Bedford, passed away on December 16, 2024, at I.U. Health Hospice House.
Born December 14, 1942, in Marion Co., he was the son of Ralph R. and Virginia Ruth (Root) Fultz. He married Barbara Purlee on September 5, 1964. He was a graduate of Mitchell High School and attended Purdue University for 2 years. He served in the Indiana National Guard in active duty from March 4, 1964 to August 30, 1964 then in reserves for six years. He had worked at General Motors and worked for his father at Fultz Auto Supplies before opening his own business, Scott’s Auto Repair. He later became part-owner of Fultz Auto Supplies, eventually becoming owner and operator of 3 NAPA Auto Parts Stores in Bedford, Mitchell and Martinsville. He was known for his expertise and knowledge of cars. He was an ordained deacon at White River Baptist Church and a past finance chairman at Bedford First Baptist Church. He found his church home in later years at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of Bedford; daughters, Noelle (Ross) Jean and Janelle (Carey) Deckard; a sister, Kathleen (Bob) Davis; four grandchildren, Dairen (Ally) Jean, of West Point, NY, Dominick Jean, of St. Louis, MO, Madelyn (Austin) Voorhies and Meredith (Brian) Lux, all of Bedford; great grandchildren, Palmer Voorhies, Pete Voorhies, Clara Jean, Saphira Kovac and Michael Kovac; 5 nieces; 1 nephew; several cousins; and his beloved dogs, Zach and Cotton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Stephen T. Fultz.

Born July 6, 1946, in Lawrence Co., she was the daughter of William and Ruth Evelyn (McMahan) Padgett. She married John Rainey on July 11, 1964, and he preceded her in death on December 28, 2007. She retired from K-Mart in 2014. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church.

Marty D. Lane
Marty D. Lane, 59 of Mitchell passed away on December 10, 2024, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born in Bedford on January 13, 1965, the son of Roy K. Lane and Hazel (Hutchinson) Lane. Marty was a mechanic, and did small engine repair, in recent years he has been disabled.
Survivors include his daughter, Kayla Lane of Mitchell, his granddaughter, Hayden Bell of Mitchell, his mother, Hazel Lane of Bedford, four sisters, Kathy Riggle of Bedford, Dee Porter of Bedford, Tammy Lagenour of Bedford, and Debbie Turpin of Bedford, several nieces, and nephews.
Marty was preceded in death by his father, Roy K. Lane, his wife, Connie Lane, and brother, Roy Lane, Jr.

Troy Stotts, 54, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, December 5, 2024, at IU Health Bedford. Born January 6, 1970, he was the son of Roberta (George) Stotts and Cecil Stotts.
Troy was of Christian faith and enjoyed being an equipment operator.

Bedford – Leo Dale Meadows, 77, of Bedford, passed away at 5:52 am on Friday, December 13, 2024, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born September 20, 1947, in Bedford, he was the son of Theodore and Cleo (Faubion) Meadows. He married Carolyn Whitted on May 12, 1967, and she survives. He was a machine repairman for 38 years at General Motors, retiring in 2006. He was a member of the Heltonville Baptist Church and had served on the board of directors at Hoosier Hills Credit Union for 52 years and coached biddyball and little league at Fayetteville for over 35 years. His favorite pastime was sitting on his front porch and playing checkers.

Born April 19, 1931, in Lawrence Co., he was the son of Daniel F. and Eva M. (Umphress) Hudson. He married Brenda E. Taylor in June of 1955, and she preceded him in death on June 4, 2018. He was an operator and mill worker in the stone industry. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving for 33 years. He was a member of the Gillen Post #33 American Legion and the Retired Enlisted Association (TREA).
Survivors include four children, Cheryl E. Henderson and husband, Charles, of Bedford, Keith R. Hudson and wife, Sherri, of Toledo, OH, Michael E. Hudson, of Norman, OK, and Randy J. Ladana Lee Stidam
Ladana Lee Stidam, 55 of Bedford passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, in the comfort of her home after a tough battle with cancer. Her long-time partner, Brent McVicker, was with her at the time of her passing.
Brent was a member of the Iron Legacy Motorcycle Club which made her a member of the Iron Legacy Hearts Sisterhood, where they were involved in many fundraisers and programs to give back to the community. She loved being on the back of his bike, surrounded by her ‘Sisters and Brothers.”
Ladana attended Bedford North Lawrence High School and held several jobs in her lifetime. She had her own business at the time of her death, crafting unique wreaths and signs, which she loved!
She enjoyed spending time with her family the most, especially her grandkids, Brayden, Karey, Mazie, Jolee, Isaiah, Anisty, Jake, LilyAnne, Paisley, and Tyson. She traveled and lived a full and adventurous life for her short 55 years.
She married Mark Jarvis in 1986, they have three sons, Matthew (Abby) Jarvis, Luke (Leah) Jarvis, and Jonathan (Lacy) Jarvis.
She is survived by her stepmother, Ellen Stidam, brothers, Charles (Trish) Stidam, and Jeremy (Myrna) Stidam, her beloved sister, Maressa Stidam, nieces, and nephews; Jayden Duke, Lillian Livingston, Lucille Stidam, Michael and Laura Stidam. Uncles Roy Stidam, and Everette (Judy) Stidam, her companion, Brent McVicker.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Stidam, her mother, Betty JoAnne Hughes, and stepfather, Ollie Hughes.

Danny “Bones” Spires, 62, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2024, at I.U. Health Hospital, Bloomington. He was born September 22, 1962, in Bedford, to Shirley (White) Swartz and Robert Spires.
Bones was a general contractor and a member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsman Club and a former member of both the Eagles and Moose Lodges. Bones enjoyed watching football and Nascar.
Surviving to cherish Bones’ memory are his brothers, Ricky Spires and David Swartz; sisters, Cathy Baker, Kristie Swartz and Stormi Swartz; aunt, Brenda (Larry) Jaggers; uncle, Jim White; nieces, Emily Spires, April Stidam, Amber Hanners; along several nieces and nephews; and several cousins; and Allison, Erica, Twila, Jill and Anetta, who Bones thought of as his own kids.
Preceding Bones in death were his parents; step-father, Claude Swartz; fiancé, Marcia Allen; sisters, Linda Jamison, Debra Spires and Donna May; brothers, Tony Spires, Bobby Spires and Randy Swartz; and grandparents, Flora and Hubert White.

MITCHELL – Sheila Kay Goen, 67, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville.
Born August 4, 1957, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Hubert Fredrick Goen and Pauline (Wilder) Flora.
Sheila worked as a Qualified Medical Assistant. She loved to fish and cook. Sheila was a really great caregiver for her mom.
Surviving are her husband, Ronald Bunch of Mitchell; children, Jamie Kay (Robert) Floyd of Bloomington and Terry Allen (Lori) Reynolds of South Carolina; grandchildren, Burgandy Eagans, Randy Lee Eagans, Robert Floyd, Jr., Joseph Floyd, Jessica Floyd, Vincent Reynolds, Dustin Reynolds, and Tristan Reynolds; and four great-grandchildren.

Scotty graduated from Eastern Green High School and was a member of the First Church of God of Bedford. He had formerly worked at Mills Market in Bedford. He loved fishing, hunting and spending time with family and grandchildren.

Claris E. Melvin, 98, of Bedford, passed away Friday, December 6, 2024, at I.U. Health Hospice House in Bloomington. She was born February 10, 1926, to Pat and Josephine (Hill) Dwyer in Martin County. She married Ora O. Melvin on April 4, 1945, and he preceded her in death on June 17, 2001.
She was a 1943 graduate of Shoals High School and a homemaker.
Surviving to cherish Claris’ memory is her daughter, Maggie Whitlow; son, Bill Melvin; several grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several great great grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews.

Jack Louis Voigtschild
March 20, 1945 – December 7, 2024
Jack Louis Voigtschild, 79, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at his residence, with his loving and caring wife by his side. Born March 20, 1945, he was the son of Jack and Ethel (Perry) Voigtschild. He married Sherry Cahill on June 21, 1969, and she survives. They had celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in 2024.
Jack was a well-known individual throughout Lawrence County for his care and concern, especially for victims of tragedy and everyone who served during those times. He was known as “Assist One” to local Emergency Services organizations, always responding to lend a hand in any way he could, with the faithful support of his wife.
Jack was a member and supporter of many local organizations, including being a long-time member of the Bedford Free Methodist Church. He was also active in the Noon Lions Club, Gideons International, Lawrence County Vietnam Veterans Group, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Celebrate Recovery and The Landing, Solutions Center, Gillen Post 33 of the American Legion, the Crisis Intervention Team, the Bedford Revitalization Board, Shawswick Township Volunteer Fire Department, Lawrence County Women’s Ministries, and the Salvation Army.
Jack served as Chaplain for various organizations as well. These include the Lawrence County Police Department, I. U. Health Bedford Hospital, Gillen Post 33 of the American Legion, the Vietnam Veterans Group, and he retired as Chaplain for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and the Salvation Army Emergency Services.
Jack was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War. During his service, he received a Purple Heart for wartime injuries and was honorably discharged in 1970. He graduated from Bedford High School with the class of 1963, the Indiana School of Mortuary Sciences, and attended Indiana University. He was a former Funeral Director at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home and retired as an Insurance Agent for various companies.
Surviving to cherish the memory of Jack and live out his legacy is his loving and committed wife, Sherry; sons, Brian (Andrea) Voigtschild and Brent (Kathy) Voigtschild; grandchildren, Amber Voigtschild, Quentin Voigtschild, Claire Voigtschild, Paige Voigtschild, Benjamin Voigtschild, Kayla Simmerman, Mahala Jarrard-Voigtschild, Mariah Moody, and Victoria George-Voigtschild; and great grandchildren, Sophia Enochs, Malachi Enochs, Jaxson Boone, Sawyer Mitchell, Luke Rodriguez, and Elias Nixon.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Ethel Voigtschild; his sister, Evelyn Lakes; and his brother-in-law, Thomas Lakes.
Funeral services for Jack L. Voigtschild will be held at 11:00am on Friday, December 13, 2024, at the Free Methodist Church, 701 R Street, Bedford, IN, with Pastor Adam Strauser and Pastor Scott Salm officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford, with Military Rites being accorded by the Honor Guard of Gillen Post 33 of the American Legion. Visitation will also be held at the Free Methodist Church on Thursday, December 12th, from 3:00pm–7:00pm.

Elvira Augusta Preuss
January 23, 1923 – December 5, 2024
Elvira Augusta Preuss, 101 years if age, passed away at the Lutheran Community Home on December 5. 2024. She was born on January 23, 1923 in Seymour, Indiana to the late William Frederick and Susanna Lambertus Preuss.
Elvira graduated from Concordia University Chicago (formerly Concordia Teachers College) and taught elementary school for 41 years in St. Johnsburg NY, Chicago IL, Tyler TX, Elkhart IN, Indianapolis IN and Seymour IN, at the Immanuel Lutheran School. She retired to care for her brother James, until his death.
As a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Elvira belonged to the Immanuel Guild and Braille work group. She volunteered at the Indianapolis VA Hospital, Schneck Memorial hospital, Meals on Wheels, local blood drives and the library book sales. Elvira enjoyed sewing, crafts, music and reading.
Surviving to cherish her memory are her nieces and nephews: Donna Kiani, Donovan Kieser, Paul Preuss, Steve Kieser, Maurice Preuss, Doug Preuss, Roland Preuss, Mark Preuss, Sue Tresenrider, Renata Lewis, Carolyn Mayfield, Jon Bickenheuser, Susan Preuss, Phyllis Ellis, and Margaret Storch.
Elvira is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, William, Paul, Carl and James Preuss; and sisters, Elta Lamphier, Verna Droege, Norma Kieser and Ruth Bickenheuser. Also preceding her in death are her nephews, Ted Preuss, Kurt Preuss, David Kieser, Eric Preuss and Charles Bickenheuser.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the Lutheran Community Home for their kind compassionate care for the past two years while Elvira lived there.
Visitation for Elvira Augusta Preuss will be on Wednesday December 11, 2024, from 10:00am-12:00 pm at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 605 S. Walnut Street, Seymour, Indiana 47274. Funeral services will be at 12:00 pm Wednesday, also at the church, with Rev. Ralph Blomenberg, Rev. Philip Bloch, Rev. James Rodriguez and Rev. William Fredstrom officiating. Interment will take place at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery immediately following the service.

Bedford – Mary Elkins, 99, of Bedford, passed away at 1:36 am on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the Hospice House in Bloomington.
Born October 20, 1925, in Lawrence Co., she was the daughter of Dwight W. and Virginia Beatrice (Earley) Prow. She married Chester L. Elkins on June 25, 1948, and he preceded her in death on January 15, 1999. She had previously worked at Sterling Drug Store and Morrison’s Office Supply and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Preston Elkins (Ruth Ann), and Greg Elkins (Traci); a sister, Vicky Woody (Jon) who was raised as a daughter; eight grandchildren, Crystal Powell, Jeremy Elkins, Alison Oliver, Blaine Parker, Jonathan Woody, Alecia Bentley, Andrea Jones and Derick Eagan; 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, Kenneth and Dwight Prow; a sister, Phyllis Kinder.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 11th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Bedford – Steve Lee Hale, 76, of Bedford, passed away at 12:25 pm on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at I.U. Health Bedford Hospital.
Born February 16, 1948, in Bedford, he was the son of Oral “Boode” and Virginia “Ginger” (Marsh) Hale. He married Linda Hale on September 23, 1972, and she preceded him in death on April 15, 2020. He was a business owner and evangelist. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Danny Hale (April) of Bedford; a granddaughter, Emma Hale, of Indianapolis; a sister, Brenda Schafer (Scott), of Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a brother, Joe Hale.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, December 14th in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastors Adam Strauser and Jerry Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. Brandi “Elsie Irene” Sears
MITCHELL – Brandi “Elsie Irene” Sears, 78, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born June 14, 1946, in Camp Atterbury, she was the daughter of Charles A. and Mary Elizabeth (Brown) McCloskey.
Brandi enjoyed doing crafts and was very artistic. She attended Work of God Church.
Surviving are her son, Michael (Kristi) Roach of Mitchell; grandchildren, Aunicka Glass of West Franklin, Illinois, Sutton (Jill) Tyson of Arlington, Virginia, Luke (Bailey) King of Mitchell, Justus (Bailey) King of Mitchell, Seavor Roach of Chicago, Illinois, and Lauren (Luke) LaFevor of Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Harrison King, Noah King, and Mila King; and siblings, Beverly May, Stephen McCloskey, and Colleen McCloskey.
Her parents; daughter, Crystal Sears; and several brothers and sisters, preceded her in death.

Elizabeth Walker Blumenfeld
The world’s light dimmed on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, when Elizabeth Walker Blumenfeld took her light on a different path following a short illness. She was born on April 21, 1959, in Bedford, IN to Alan and Donnera Phillips Walker, where she grew up on Fifth Street. After her studies at Indiana University, she married David Blumenfeld of Spartanburg, SC on June 20, 1982, and he survives. Also surviving are her adult children, Mrs. Will (Lura Blumenfeld) Van Gelderen of Atlanta, GA, Jacob and Leiha Blumenfeld, both of Landrum, SC. Her sister, Mrs. Chester (Gloria Walker) Kasnowski of Bloomington, IN. Cousins; Ann Gunn, Ken and Jim Gates of Evansville, IN., Linda Kay Tobler of Hurst, TX., Terry, Gary and Richard Phillips all of Texas. Also surviving are her extended family, Phyllis Woollen, Daniel Blumenfeld and Deborah Blumenfeld all of NC.
As a member of Temple B’nai Israel, Beth sang in the choir at first, then chose to volunteer in event planning and support. She is a life member of Hadassah and when her children were young, she was a Sunday School principal at the Temple.
Beth and David participated in the Irish Children’s Program for Peace for Catholic and Protestant children of Belfast, Northern Ireland, for several years and Beth considered those youth her extended family, too. She was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence class of 1977, and Indiana University’s School of Education. She taught students at Spartanburg District 7, helping many to see positive choices in their lives and retired in May 2024.
As a mother, Beth sought to ingrain a sense of social responsibility within her children, volunteering with her family at the soup kitchen in Spartanburg. She also loved gardening with her children helping her set up a garden center and small orchard. She adored hosting events at home—especially Passover and Thanksgiving. Future holidays will be different without her stories and laughter.
She loved teaching people to play euchre and 7-Up card games, two of her parents’ favorites. They gave her a love for mountains, history and travel. She and David enjoyed several cruises and traveling out west. Two recent cruises took them to Alaska to see the receding glaciers and the other to see the Northeast Canadian coastline sea life.
A memorial service will be held at 11am Sunday, December 8, 2024, at Temple B’nai Israel, 146 Heywood Ave., Spartanburg, SC 29302 conducted by Rabbi Yossi Liebowitz.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Liver Foundation, PO Box 299, West Orange, NJ 07052, and the family suggests that people once more consider organ donations as a response to an ongoing need.

Barry Kent Whalin
MITCHELL – Barry Kent Whalin, 69, passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.
Born August 14, 1955, in Bedford, he was the son of John Robert and Mary Lois (Chastain) Whalin. He married Yvonne Kay Wyman on November 4, 2002 and she survives.
Barry was a 1974 graduate of Mitchell High School. He worked for the Essex Group and Cook Medical as a material handler. Barry was a member of the Newton Stewart Masonic Lodge No. 432 F.&A.M. in Paoli and was a member of the Exchange Club. In his free time he enjoyed fishing and watching IU basketball and Gunsmoke reruns. Barry also enjoyed old cars, motorcycles, and working on small engines.
Surviving are his wife, Yvonne Kay Whalin of Mitchell; daughter, Leah Marie (Brad) DeWeese of Mitchell; stepsons, Larry Croan of Mitchell and Adam (Jose) Croan of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Matthew Kent (Savannah) Moore of Mitchell and Victoria Grace (Mikie) Keefe of Bedford; step-granddaughters, Chloe DeWeese of Bedford, Veronika Croan of Austin, Texas, and Bree Croan of Austin, Texas; and great-granddaughter, Marlee Jaye Moore, with one great-granddaughter on the way.
His parents and brother, Michael Wayne Whalin, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 7 in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Steve Jones officiating. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 6, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Born July 26, 1958, he was the son of Robert and Joyce (Hedrick. He retired as a shift manager for Burger King.
Survivors include a son, Brandon Hedrick; a sister, Joyce Hedrick; his best friend, Brent Eagans; a nephew, Jaron Lane and wife, Lindsey. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ned C. Beretta, 72, of Mitchell, passed away peacefully Monday, November 25, 2024, at Cedar Creek Assisted Living, where he had resided since April 2023.
Born November 21, 1952, in Bedford, IN, to Loris C. and Martha Lee (Cave) Beretta. He married Pamela Langley Winkler in 2002.
Ned was a graduate of Bedford High School, a union electrician, and a 50 year member of IBEW Local Union 16, Evansville, IN. Ned was a proud member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge No.228 F.&A.M. He was a former board member of South Lawrence Utilities and Green Hill Cemetery Association. He retired as a union electrician from General Motors, Bedford. Ned took great pride in his work, and as most knew, was a perfectionist.
Ned is survived by his wife, Pamela; his son, Jason (Robin) Beretta; grandchildren Gage Beretta and Claire Beretta; sister Ann (Larry) Brown; several nieces, nephews and cousins, and his close friends considered family, John Gill, Buck Hancock and Mark Fish.
His parents, and brother, Lou Beretta, preceded him in death.

Mitchell-Jerry Lee Butler, 62 of Mitchell died at 6:55 pm on Friday, November 29, 2024, at his residence.
Born January 22, 1962, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Harold A. and Betty J. (Vanwinkle) Butler. He married Karen Tumey on April 10, 1982. Jerry retired from the Bedford Water Plant as an aquatologist for the City of Bedford, he served on the South Lawrence Water Board.
Survivors include his wife, Karen of Mitchell; two daughters, Kalee Butler of Franklin, IN, and Kylee Corner and her husband Tobais of Bloomington, IN; his grandcats, Kosmo and Koko; a sister-in-law, Becky Tumey of Bedford; a nephew, Jeremy Tumey and his wife Emily of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Scott Tumey.
