December 31, 2014 Robert L. Abel Jr. July 26, 1950 — Dec. 27, 2014

Robert Lee Abel Jr., 64, of Bedford, died at 11:55 p.m. Saturday at his residence.

Born July 26, 1950, in Bedford, he was the son of Robert Lee Abel and Charlotte Alice (Fiddler) Abel. He married Carole Trowbridge on Dec. 14, 1996, and she survives.

Robert was a graduate of Bedford High School with the Class of 1968 and was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War era.

He had worked at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital, Bedford, starting in October of 1976, in maintenance and then went on to work, for a short time, on the hospital ambulance staff, ultimately becoming Director of Purchasing, over 30 years.

Surviving are his wife, Carole Abel of Bedford; one stepson, Jason Welin; nephews, Charlie and Jimmy Elkins and Ryan Watson; one niece, Hallie Jo Abel; one brother, John David (Darla) Abel; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Diana Taylor.

A Celebration of Life Service will be from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the Red Brick, Otis Park, Bedford. The family asks that everyone bring a covered dish, photographs and stories to share with the family to rejoice and remember Bob’s life.

Memorial contributions may be considered to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in memory of Robert Lee Abel Jr.

Robert D. Baker

May 1, 1934 — Dec. 29, 2014

Robert Dewey Baker, 80, of Springville, died at 11:10 p.m. on Monday at Westview Nursing and Rehab.

Born May 1, 1934, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Everette E. and Minnie (Gregory) Baker. He first married Wilma Anderson on Dec. 19, 1954, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 12, 1997. He later married Virginia Broome on Jan. 10, 2010, and she survives.

He retired from G.E. and was an Air Force veteran.

He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church of Springville.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia of Springville; three sons, Robert “Greg” Baker and wife Kathy of Springville, Jerome Hettle and wife Debbie of Bedford, and Wesley Phillips and wife Tina of Springville; two daughters, Teresa Picou and husband Lee of Springville and Lisa Hillenburg and husband Robin of Heltonville; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one stepsister, Geraldine Smith of Bedford; two brothers, William “Bill” Baker of Bedford and Ben Baker of Missouri; and two sisters, Mary Beavers of Mitchell and Brenda Poore and husband Frank, of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Wilma; a sister, Anita Thompson and a stepsister, Maxine Fleenor.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery where military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and D.A.V. Chapter No. 2.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Roberta Denise (Chandler) Parks, 59, of Bedford, passed away at 4:30 a.m. on Friday at Bloomington Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on Nov. 11, 1955, in Denver, Colo., to Charles J. and Elizabeth Ann (Rollins) Chandler.

She attended The Queen of Heaven Catholic School in Denver.

She had worked in the deli at Jay-C Food Store.

Survivors include her children, Stephanie Helton of Bedford, Sarah Lorraine Parks of Bedford, Glenn Helton of Linton, and Michael Brent Parks of Bedford; sisters, Shelley Goben of Mitchell, Diane Chandler of Bedford and Cindy Chandler of Texas; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Charles.

Cremation was chosen, celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Dorothy McCart

June 23, 1915 — Dec. 28, 2014

Dorothy G. McCart, 99, Mitchell, passed away at 7:20 p.m. Sunday at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Born June 23, 1915, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Oscar and Cora (Tincher) Williams. She married Chriss Russell McCart March 2, 1931, and he preceded her in death Dec. 3, 1993.

Dorothy was a homemaker and a member of the Spice Valley Baptist Church.

Surviving are daughter, Joyce Ferguson of Mitchell; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorene Ashley of Bedford and daughters-in-law, Harriet McCart and Oleta McCart, both of Bedford.

Her parents; husband; sons, Dale McCart and Norman McCart; son-in-law, Mike Ferguson; and siblings, Clifford Williams, Robert Williams, Harry Williams, Jesse Williams, Warren Williams, Maxine Hodges, Betty Ritchison, and Mary Kathleen Sheeks, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with the Rev. Dwight Dunbar officiating. Burial will be Mitchell Cemetery.

Dena LeKay Randolph, 42, passed away at 6:25 a.m. Friday at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

Born May 17, 1972, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Bettina (Jaggers) Randolph.

Dena was employed at Wal-Mart.

Surviving are her children, Cheyanna Randolph, Daniel J. “D.J.” Randolph and Alicea Randolph, all of Bedford; parents, Charles and Bettina Randolph of Mitchell; and a sister, Jodi Randolph of Bedford.

Her brothers, Darren Randolph and Jason Wyatt Randolph, preceded her in death.

Jerry A. Craig

May 4, 1951 — Dec. 27, 2014

Jerry Alan Craig, 63, of Bedford, died at 11:28 p.m. on Saturday at Community South Hospital in Indianapolis following a five-month illness.

Born May 4, 1951, in Bedford, he was the son of Emil Arthur and Norma Joyce (Patton) Craig. He married Deborah (Debbie) Todd on Jan. 15, 1972, and she survives.

He was employed at Cook Medical and had formerly worked at Regal-Beloit Corp. in Mitchell.

He graduated from Bedford High School with the Class of 1969. He had been a 4-H leader for over 20 years and was a member of Lawrence County Cattleman’s Association.

Survivors include his wife, Debbie of Bedford; a son, Trevor Craig and wife Melinda of Bedford; two grandsons, Ty Alan Craig and Trey Hunter Todd Craig; two brothers, Pat Craig and wife Darla of Ohio and Kevin Craig and wife Polly of Bedford; his mother, Norma Corbin of Bedford; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow in Knott Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Tuesday and from noon until the service on Wednesday at the mortuary.

Pallbearers will be Trevor Craig, Kevin Craig, Patrick Craig, Tommy Todd, Jerry Spires and Chad Hess. Honorary pallbearers are Pat Craig, Trey Craig, Ty Craig, Travis Craig and Terry Deckard.

Thomas C. Priddy

Feb. 14, 1937 — Dec. 26, 2014

Thomas C. Priddy, 77, of Bedford, died at his residence on Friday.

Born on Feb. 14, 1937, in Bedford, he was the son of Charles Eithel Priddy and Thelma (Garland) Priddy.

He began working for the US Postal Service in June of 1957 and retired after 57 years, spending 20 years as Bedford’s Postmaster.

Survivors include two sons, Tom Priddy and wife Polly of Noblesville and Todd E. Priddy of Bedford; one daugher, Teresa Long of Naples, Fla.; two grandchildren, Alanna and Charlie Priddy; one brother, Kirby Priddy; and one sister, Sherri Scott.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry Priddy.

Service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Millard Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Hilltop Cemetery.

MaryLou Dinkins

April 22, 1941 — Dec. 26, 2014

MaryLou Dinkins, 73, Mitchell, passed away at 5:32 a.m. Friday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born April 22, 1941, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Charles Robert and Annabelle (Elliott) Clements. She married Robert Dinkins Oct. 6, 1975, and he preceded her in death July 11, 2009.

MaryLou was a homemaker and she enjoyed her pets and being outdoors.

Surviving are one son, Jeff (Marcy) Bennett of West Baden Springs; stepdaughters, Pam (Archie) Kappel of Terre Haute, Linda Reed and Barbara (David) Irwin, both of Columbus, and  Liz (Alan) Kays of Taylorsville; a sister, Becky Clements of Mitchell; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Her parents; husband; and son, Douglas Bennett, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with the Rev. Dwight Dunbar officiating. Burial will be Bonds Chapel Cemetery.

Ruth Claybaugh

Ruth Ann Claybaugh, 70, of West Baden Springs, died at 8 a.m. Friday  at her residence.

She was born June 26, 1944, in Lawrence County, the daughter of Theo and Lula (Caraway) Porter She married Bruce Claybaugh on Aug. 23, 1964, and he survives.

She was a homemaker and attended Bonds Chapel.

She is survived by her husband, Bruce Claybaugh, of West Baden; one brother, Sherman Porter (Pearl) of Bunnlevel, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Dennis and Eugene Porter.

A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday at Bonds Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Martindale officiating.

Erma (Hall) Robertson, 82, of Gosport, passed away on Wednesday, December 24, 2014, at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin.

Erma was born in Bloomington into the home of Jason and Emma (Nelson) Hall on July 16, 1932. She was married to Lonnie E. “Jack” Robertson and he preceded her in death in 2013. Erma worked in home health care and was also a homemaker.

Erma is survived by her daughters, Emma Drake (James) of Franklin, Vivian Leonard (Jerry) of Rensselaer, Sherry Janotta (Steve) of Monon, and Lisa Shidler of Gosport; sons, Keith May (Kathy) of Nashville, Leon May (Michelle) of Monticello, James Foley (Cheryl) Louisville, KY, and Jeffery Foley (Carrie Decker) of Judah; sisters, Myrna Stevens of Bloomington and Cloella Crase of Oceanside, CA; 21 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, James Foley; second husband, Lonnie “Jack” Robertson; two brothers, six sisters; and two daughters, Carol Porter and Nora Hartley.

C. Lavern Smith, 92, of Bedford, died at noon Thursday, at St. Vincent, Dunn, Hospital, in Bedford.

Born Sept. 10, 1922, in Martin County, he was the son of Everett and Vina (Lamb) Smith. He married Lois A. Sears on Dec. 27, 1941; she died Feb. 18, 2010.

He was a supervisor at GM Powetrain, Bedford; retired. He had also sold real estate in the Bedford area.

Lavern was a member of Central Church of Christ, Bedford; a longtime member of the Bedford Evening Lions Club; was a volunteer for the American Red Cross, assisting with transportation and Bloodmobile work; was a volunteer working the polls at election time; and was also a U.S. Army veteran, WW II, during which time he had driven ammunition and food trucks.

Surviving are one son, Larry L. (Yvonne) Smith of New Albany; one daughter, Juliann (Mike) Johnson of Bedford; five grandchildren, Stacie (Mark) Eads, Ryan (Jessica) Smith, Michael (Nancy) Stevens, Corey Stevens, and Sarah (Ryan) Ralston; two stepgrandchildren, Scott (Niki) Johnson and Tyler (Brandy) Johnson; great-grandchildren, Eli Eads, Anthony Stevens, and Aden Ralston; step-great-grandchildren, Braxton, Brayson, Bryton, and Zachary Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one brother, Carlos Smith and one brother, in infancy; and one great-grandson, Jeremy Eads.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedord, with Brother Rick Leach officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Military Rites will be accorded by members of American Legion, Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford.

Hillard Mundy

March 28, 1939 — Dec. 25, 2014

Hillard Mundy, 75, Mitchell, passed away Thursday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Oct. 5, 1939, in Lawrence County, he was the son of William Chester and Mabel (Morris) Mundy. He married Betty Carter March 30, 1961, and she preceded him in death Aug. 6, 2011.

Hillard retired as a mechanic after 23 years with the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Hillard was a member of American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Surviving are his children, David L. (Cathy Pemberton) Mundy of Mitchell, Anita (Jamey Thompson) Mundy of Mitchell, Kevin Mundy of Bedford and Damon (Dora) Mundy of Avoca; a brother, James Mundy of Clinton; grandchildren, Melissa (Jake Melton) Mundy, Crystal (Jake) Minton, Mariah (Steve) Dixon, Keith Mundy, Kendra Mundy, Kassandra Mundy, Troy Leatherman, William Mundy, and James Mundy; 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren

His parents and wife preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Huron Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Eugene Wilcoxen

July 27, 1936 — Dec. 25, 2014

Eugene Wilcoxen, 78, of Loogootee, passed away on Thursday.

He was born July 27, 1936 to the late Hobart and Velma (Conolty) Wilcoxen.

He retired from the U.S. Army in 1975 after 20 years of service, and retired from the Loogootee U.S. Postal Service in 2001, after 25 years of service.

He was a member of Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Loogootee. He was a member of the American Legion Post 120 and served as a past commander; Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9395 and served as a past officer; Shoals Eagles Post 2442; Loogootee Knights of Columbus.

In his retirement he served as the Martin County Veterans Affairs Officer and volunteered at Saint Vincent DePaul. His favorite past time was spending time with his grandchildren, bowling and golf.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; and one son Eugene Wilcoxen Jr.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Agnes (Wathen) Wilcoxen; daughters, Darlene (Jerry) O’Neal of Visalia, Calif., Wendy (Lyle) Furguson of Chandler, Ariz., and Becky Harbison of Loogootee; sons, Steve (Kim) Kidwell of Loogootee, Jeff Kidwell of Bloomington, and Jim Kidwell of Loogootee; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sister, Naomi (Ray) Neukam of Washington; brothers, Lee (Rosemary) Wilcoxen of Franklin and Billy (Mary Beth) Wilcoxen of Mitchell.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Very Rev. J. Kenneth Walker and co-celebrant the Rev. Leo Kiesel at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee.

Michael Dean Chastain, 55, Bedford, passed away Dec. 12 at his residence.

Born May 24, 1959, in Washington County, he was the son of Ronald Max Chastain and Phyllis Ruth (Hardman) Ridge.

He was a self employed painter, and loved basketball and football.

Surviving are his mother, Phyllis Ridge of Bedford; daughters, Amy Edson of New Jersey, Angie Price of Michigan, Stephanie Hawkins of Bedford and Kelly Labarr of Michigan; grandchildren, Chloe, Chance, Chase, Cayden, Arriana, Justice, Jayden and Jenna; siblings, Terry Chastain Whitinger of Indianapolis, Sherry Chastain Neely of Bedford, Chris Chastain and Scarlet Chastain Vasquez, both of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Bryan Ridge of Williams.

His father preceded him in death.

Donald L. Taylor Sr.

May 5, 1934 — Dec. 23, 2014

Donald L. Taylor Sr., 80, Indianapolis, passed away Tuesday.

Born May 5, 1934, in Bedford, he was a graduate of Oolitic High School and a member of Indianapolis Masonic Lodge No. 669 F&AM and the Murat Shrine Club.

He retired from Macy Trucking Company and was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed golf.

Survivors include his wife of 62 1/2 years, Margie; son, Donald L. Taylor Jr. (Murcia); daughter, Beth A. Hittel; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Grimes.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at G.H. Herrmann Greenwood Funeral Home, followed by the funeral at 1 p.m. Burial: Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Kathy L. Cummings, 64, Mitchell, passed away at 5:39 p.m. Sunday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Sept. 15, 1950, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Leslie “Jack” and Catherine (Tripp) Houchin.

Kathy retired from General Motors and was a member of UAW Local No. 440.

Surviving are a son, Jim (Connie) Wilson III of Paoli; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; several nieces and nephews; siblings, Sharon Abbott of Leesburg, Fla., and Charles Houchin, Dorothy Wagner, Marlin Houchin, and Carol Hughes, all of Mitchell.

Her parents; and infant brother, Marvin Houchin, preceded her in death.

John “Jack” Wright Laux, 90, passed away at Indiana Universigty Health Bloomington Hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 17. He was born on July 27, 1924, in Bedford, Ind., to Jesse and Ethel Laux.

Jack was a member of Crossroads Community Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired after 33 years at Indiana University.

Jack was known for his pristine gardens that produced many flowers and vegetables over the years, and for his love of HO trains. In his retirement, Jack created a HO train layout that depicted his childhood neighborhood creating many of the pieces by hand.

Jack is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Robert Laux. He is survived by his loving wife Norma of 65 years, who provided exceptional care for him as his health declined. He is also survived by one son John Mark, one daughter Marsha (William) Egan, one grandson W. Shane Egan, all of Bloomington, and three great-granddaughters.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at the Crossroads Community Church, 5000 S. Old State Road 37, Bedford, IN 47421. Pastor Ken Ransom will officiate.

Dwight Taylor, 88, of Indianapolis, died at 7:27 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, at Beech Grove Meadows in Beech Grove, Ind.

Born Dec. 27, 1925, in Bedford, Ind., he was the son of Ben W. Taylor and Leona (Brown) Taylor.

He married Lucille June Bailey on Aug. 30, 1947, and she survives.

He graduated with a master’s degree in education. He worked as an art teacher for 36 years. He was a member of the Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army. He was selected for service on staff of General MacArthur, as an assistant chief clerk and branch recorder, and served in the Philippines, and Occupation of Japan. He was a troop leader for the Boy Scouts of America for over 15 years. He was a leader of Little Hoosiers for a number of years, and a team member of summer camps for boys and girls.

Surviving are his wife, Lucille J. Taylor; two sons, Ben D. (Connie) Taylor, of Westfield, and Gregg W. (Bonnie L. Butler) Taylor, of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. Vasco (Ramona) Magill, of Bedford, and Mrs. Labon (Mary Ruth) Kern, of Mitchell, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be on Monday, Dec. 22, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery, Bedford.

Troy D. Borden, age 49, of Lawrence County, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. in Bloomington. He was born in Bedford to Harry and Dorothy (Cunningham) Borden on Feb. 25, 1965. Troy married Trisha (Starr) Borden and she survives.

He had previously worked at Dana Corp. in Mitchell, where he was union president of Steelworkers Local No. 119; he later attended Ivy Tech in Bloomington where he became an HVAC technician. He was a member of the Blackwell Pentecostal Church in Heltonville.

Troy served many years as a foster parent to children in Lawrence County. He was an amazing, kind and gentle man, and he loved people. He will be missed by his loving family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Trisha Borden of Bedford; his mother, Dorothy Borden of Bedford; five daughters, Tiffany (David) Axsom of Bedford, Rachel Scott of Topeka, Kansas, Briana (Ryan) McNutt of Lebanon, Tabitha Borden of Bedford and Timberlin Borden of Bedford; brothers, Stephen Borden of Bedford, and Greg Borden of Arkansas; one sister, DeAnna Pineira of Bedford, and five grandchildren, Dacey, Dawson and Driven Axsom, Conner Meredith, and Abigail McNutt.

He was preceded in death by his father, and brother, James Borden.

A celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday Dec. 20, 2014, at the Blackwell Pentecostal Church, 9018 S. Chapel Hill Road, Heltonville.

Alma Elsea

Alma Elsea, Bedford, age 97, formerly of Bristol, Tenn., passed away on Saturday at Garden Villa nursing home.

She was born Jan. 23, 1917, to the late Ira D. Fleenor and Mollie R. Goodman Fleenor in Bristol, Va. Alma lived in the Walnut Hill community in Bristol, Tenn., before moving to Bedford in October of 2007. She worked as a professional seamstress in several locations of Bristol: Nickels Mfg. Co., West Berry and later opened Alma’s Shop, doing tailoring and alterations. The shop was located at Bill King Clothier’s and then in the Bristol Mall at the Papagallo. She “Made Bristol Look Good!” She had also contracted for Mardi Gras events at VI College for several years.

In Bristol, Alma was a member of the Alpha/Omega Ministries to Seniors,and the Stroke Club of Wellmont. In Bedford, she was a charter member of Thursday Church Ministry to Seniors at Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene. Alma was a woman of integrity, strength and courage, always putting the concerns of others before her own. She often shared her wealth of wisdom and humor with others. She was confident in her faith in the Lord and was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

In addition to her parents, Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Elsea; son, Rufus Lee Elsea; grandson, Gregg Elsea; six sisters, Elizabeth, Emma, Gladys, Kathleen, Mayme and Virginia and four brothers, Fred, Claude, Wiley and Gene.

Survivors include: daughter, Elizabeth “Judy” Shetler and husband Charles of Bedford; four granddaughters, Bonnie Shetler McNair (Caleb) of Jackson, Miss.; Julie Shetler Crawford (Jim) of Sedro Woolley, Wash.; Lisa Pritchard (Hank) and Angela Gray of Bristol, Tenn.; two grandsons, Chas Shetler (Allison), of Burlington, Wash., and Mike Barrett (Anissa) of Kingsport, Tenn.; 13 great-grandchildren, Emily Sullins and James Gray of Bristol; Ryan, Montana and Hannah of Kingsport; Isaiah, Grace, Blaze, Leif and Noah of Burlington, and Emma, Holly and Cameron of Sedro Woolley, and one sister, Eunice Wirth of Clarkston, WA.

The funeral service for Mrs. Elsea will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor J. Venable and the Rev. A.G. Bud Branscomb officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the service. The burial will be held at Mountain View Cemetery following the service.

Robert E. Lee, 83, of Bedford, died at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday at Westview Nursing and Rehab in Bedford.

Born Jan. 15, 1931 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Fred and Leatha (Rose) Lee. He married Delores Jeanette Fowler in 1951 and she preceded him in death on Jan. 31, 2013. He graduated from Oolitic High School and was a retired machinist at Jerden Industries in Bloomington.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Lee and wife, Gail, and Steve Lee and wife, Mary, all of Bedford, and Larry Lee and wife, Charlotte, of Avoca; six granddaughters, Marie, Kayla and Jackie Lee, Tonia Cummings and husband, Josh, Jennifer Teike and husband, Brian, and Jackie Tirey; two grandsons, Joe and Robbie Lee; three great-grandchildren and a brother, Don Lee and wife, Eldina, of Fayetteville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a sister, Lois Cobb.

Vernon Lee Wininger, age 90, of French Lick, Indiana passed away on Tuesday at Johnson Christian Village in Bedford, Indiana.

He was born on June 6, 1924, in Orange County, Indiana to Charles Audie Wininger and Della (Morris) Wininger.

Vernon married Leona A. Gilliatt on Dec. 15, 1950, and she survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne and James, and sisters Phyllis Nigg and Margaret Abel.

Vernon was retired from Crane NSWC and served his country in the United States Army Air Force in World War II. He was a member of the Red Quarry Christian Church and had been an elder there for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Leona (Gilliatt) Wininger, of Evansville; a son, Stephen Lee Wininger (Jayne) of Evansville, one daughter, Anita Faye Triano (Mike) of Orleans; one brother, Gordon Wininger of French Lick; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 19, 2014, at Brosmer-Kemple Funeral Home in French Lick, Indiana. Friends may call from 3 p.m. until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home.

Robert L. Smith, 67, Mitchell, passed away at 9:45 p.m. Saturday at his residence with family and friends by his side after a long battle with cancer.

Born March 25, 1947, in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of Lloyd Abel and Alma Agnes (Quaigg) Smith. He married Lana Lynn Patton Nov. 18, 1966.

Robert was a 1965 graduate of Bedford High School. He played baseball for the Bedford High School Stonecutters and received a batting championship award. He was invited to try out for Minor League Baseball. He could throw a mean curve ball.

He worked hard for his family and was employed at Hall Brothers Trucking in Orleans, where he was accident free and received a Miles Driven Award.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and his family and friends. He loved sports, particularly the Patriots, St. Louis Cardinals, and he supported the Mitchell baseball and basketball teams. He was a frequent coach and umpire for the Mitchell Youth Community. He enjoyed watching his grandson, Eric, play school and travel baseball and basketball.

 Robert was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Lana L. Smith of Mitchell; son, Daron Scott (Darci Matthews) Smith of Erlanger, Ky.; daughter, D’Andra Lynn (Sean) Fleenor of Mitchell; grandchildren, Steffani Frolich, Alyssa Robbins, Eric Fleenor, Jackson Smith and Ella Smith; great-grandchildren, Kylee and Taylor Robbins; and siblings, Judy Benham of Judah and Jan K. (Carolyn) Smith of Marietta, Ga.

His parents; brother, Phillip Smith; and brother-in-law, Carl Benham, preceded him in death.

Joshua P. Stroud, 36, Paoli, died of an apparent heart attack at 1:04 p.m. Sunday at Indiana University Health Paoli Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1978, in Corydon to Merlin “Mert” Stroud and Trina Tuell Stroud. He married Amanda Heinz on April 12, 2005.

He was an operating engineer with Union Local 181. He attended Paoli Wesleyan Church, where he was very active with the kids ministry.

Survivors include his wife, Amanda Stroud of Paoli; a daughter, Mia Stroud, and two sons, William Stroud and James “Jay” Thompson, all at home; his mother, Trina Tuell of Paoli; his father, Mert Stroud and his wife, Cathy Jo Stroud of Marengo; two sisters, Kim Stroud of Paoli and Misty Stands and her husband, Jason, of Paoli; nieces, Karson Stands and Kayla Walls, both of Paoli, and Rachel Walls of Mitchell, and nephew, Trey Guthrie of Paoli.

She loved going to church and being with her family and was a member of Tunnel Hill Pentecostal Church.

Born June 6, 1931, in Springfield, Ky., she was the daughter of Otis and Audrey (Terrell) Dean. She married Charles Stroud March 15, 1947, and he preceded her in death in 1990. Her second marriage was to Fred Clem Feb. 13, 1998.

She retired from the Indiana Handle Company in Paoli with 25 years of service.

Emma was a member of the Mitchell Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Surviving are her husband, Fred Clem of Orleans;  children, Paul Stroud of Orleans, Tonya Jones of Paoli and Allen Stroud of St. Cloud, Fla.; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and siblings, Lois Gilliatt of Westfield, Nancy Ford, Faye Thomas, Inez Burns,Cecilia Morris, Joseph Dean and Bill Dean, all of Louisville, Ky.

He was in the National Guard, was a member of the Teamsters Local Union and was a long-time member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Rhonda G. Harrell, age 58, of Mitchell passed away on Wednesday December 10, 2014, at 11:55 p.m. at Mitchell Manor. She was born in Lawrence County on February 3, 1956 to Preston and Ruth (Keller) Byrd. Rhonda married Ward L. Harrell on November 17, 1979 in Lawrence County, and he survives.

Rhonda was a graduate of Fayetteville High School in 1974 and was a member of New Union Christian Church; she was also active with the White River Humane Society in Bedford.

Survivors include her husband, Ward L. Harrell of Mitchell; sister, Pam Sitzer and husband Glenn of Bloomington; nephew, Brett (Ginger) Sowders and daughter Shelby.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law Glenn W. Harrell.

Frances “Franny” Cormican age 60 of Bedford, passed away on Friday December 12, 2014, in Williams. She was born on May 13, 1954, in Bedford to Wayne Alan Wessel and Marilyn (Fender) Miller. She attended Shawswick High School, and was a CNA and QMA at White River Lodge in Bedford. Franny was a member of Central Church of Christ in Bedford, and attended Work of God Church.

John Wesley Buker, 91, of Bedford, died Thursday in Indianapolis.

He was born on Jan. 27, 1923, in Coshocton, Ohio. He married Martha Joy Bridwell on Dec. 24, 1941. They lived in love until her death in 2009.

John was an honorable and loving man, and held a special place in the hearts of all who loved or knew him and will be remembered for his devotion to his family and friends, his intelligence, wit and judgment.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Guy Edgar Buker and Leona Watson Buker and  two brothers, Bob Buker and Watson Buker.

He is survived by one sister, Anne Coomer; his devoted son, Jan Robert Buker and daughter-in-law, Mariane Eckman Buker; one grandson, Daniel Hilton Buker; and three great-granddaughters, Isabelle Lee, Claire Evelyn and Vivienne Mae Buker.

John moved to Bedford in 1937 with his family when his father became pastor at the Bedford Nazarene Church. After high school graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in radio intelligence in WW II seeing action in all five European campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge.

John served as Lawrence County councilman for several years, was a member of the Bedford Elks Lodge and a lifetime member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

James C. Hughes

June 12, 1920 — Dec. 10, 2014

James Calvin Hughes,  94, of Bedford went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday at Bliss House Assisted Living.

He was born June 12, 1920, in Bismarck, Ark., the third of 11 siblings, to the late Charlie and Glenner Thornton Hughes. He married the love of his life, Lovie E. Hall Hughes, on Feb. 4, 1942, just hours before he left to serve in World War II. They shared 65 blessed years together before she preceded him in death.

James was a past master of the Rockport Masonic Lodge No. 58, past member of Englewood Baptist Church in Bedford and a current member of Prairie Bayou Church of Christ at New DeRoche, Ark.

He loved hunting, fishing and repairing things. James worked for General Motors in Jones Mill for 16 years and then at the Central Foundry Plant in Bedford for an additional 14 years. He moved with his family to Bedford in 1966.

Other than his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Willie Efird; brothers, Frank Hughes and Sylvester Hughes; son, Willard Hughes; daughter, Margaret Hilderbrand; great-granddaughter, Crystal Aurora Hughes; and son-in-law, Ralph Butch Fisher.

Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Jeanette Burroughs of Hot Springs, Ark., Angelee Fisher (Paul Warren) of Paoli and Doris Richardson (Mike) of Bedford; sons, Danny Hughes of Gurdon, Ark. and Arnold Hughes (Sherry) of Bedford; brothers, Marvin Hughes (Carolyn) of Hot Springs, Adolph Hughes (Jean) and Johnny Hughes, both of New DeRoche; sisters, Mary Ellen Wedsted of New DeRoche and Bonnie Allen (Elster) of Bismarck; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edith S. Young, 89, Medora, passed away Thursday at her residence.

Born Jan. 29, 1925, in Jonesville, Va., she was the daughter of William Lee and Rosa Ann (Saylor) Young, both of whom preceded her in death. On July 20, 1948, in Detroit, Mich., she married Ralph J. Young, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 30, 2013.

She graduated from Flatwoods High School in Jonesville, attended a trade school in Norfolk, Va., and worked at the Naval Shipyard in Norfolk after graduation. She also worked at the Medora Plastics Factory while raising her children.

She was a member of Liberty Christian Church.

Edith was a loving mother and grandmother and enjoyed cooking, gardening and caring for her family.

Survivors include four sons, Jack Young of Medora, Don (Amy) Young of Winterville, N.C., Jeff (Linda) Young of Seymour, and Doug (Tina) Young of Medora; two daughters, Sharon (Glen) Davidson and Marcella Young, both of Seymour; four sisters, Fannie Nichols of Kokomo, Iris (Bill) Haywood of Virginia Beach, Va., Ruth (Frankie) May of Greenwood and Pat Bartlett of Bedford; 12 grandchildren, Greg (Michelle) Davidson, Jon (Tracey) Davidson, Michael (Amy) Davidson, Craig Young, Hollie (David) Perkins, Landon Young, Kelly Young, Jordan (Lauren) Young, Brooke (Ryan) Stein, Ashley (Alberto) Saldana, Leah Young and Farrah Young; and 11 great-grandchildren, Cassie Davidson, Kirsten Davidson, Kirsten Marie Skinner, Christopher Davidson, Alex Davidson, Tristin Perkins, Trinity Perkins, Maleigh Young, Finley Stein, Sierra Young and Kaylee Young

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Carroll; four brothers, Zenis, Ross, Germany and Allen Yeary; a granddaughter, Angela Young; and two great-granddaughters, Chloe Davidson and Isabella Perkins.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Spurgeon Funeral Home in Brownstown with Kenneth Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown.

Mona Camille LaFon, 83, formerly of Orleans, passed away Tuesday.

Born May 13, 1931, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Elwood Jennings and Hildred May (Cosby) Chastain. She grew up in Orleans with her four sisters and a large extended family. Mona was eventually adopted by her uncle and aunt, Lee O. and Helen (Chastain) Sanders. As an adult, Mona lived in Indianapolis where she met and married Keith A. LaFon on December 17, 1966. They made their home in Indianapolis and raised two children, Stephen K. and Amy C. LaFon.

During her life, Mona worked as a licensed beautician and a secretary for many years. She was active in the Orleans High School alumni group, Order of Eastern Star and very active in the lives of her children and grandchildren.

Mona was preceded in death by her husband, Keith A. LaFon; sisters, Jane Chastain (Fred) Huffman, Rachel Ann Chastain (Jake) Henderson; and nephew, Dave W. Huffman.

She is survived by her children, Stephen K. (Nancy) LaFon and Amy C. LaFon; grandchildren, Allyson Nicole, Monica Camille, and Natalie Rose LaFon; sisters, Rowena Chastain (Max) Hall and Helen Chastain (John) Hardman. She also leaves behind nephews, Johnny E. Henderson, Ron E. Henderson, Jeffery Hall, and Patrick D. Hall; nieces, Sally A. (Huffman) Schepers, Heather S. (Hardman) Johnson, Holly N. (Hardman) Johnston, and Hilari B. (Hardman) Yentz; great-nephews, Benjamin Schepers, Daniel Schepers, Ryne Huffman, Reid Johnson, Rhett Johnson, Dane Johnston, and Adler Yentz; great-nieces, Sara Johnson, Summer Hall Huddelson, Rachel Johnson, Delaney Johnston, and Isabella Yentz; and great-great-niece, Emma Jane Johnson.

Born June 23, 1925, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Dora and Clona (Ray) Robbins. She married Willard Colgan on Dec. 25, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1990.

 She was a homemaker and a mother.

She attended Fairview Community Church and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Reynolds and husband Larry of Bedford and Betty Mooneyham and husband Luke of Bedford; one son, Lanny Colgan and wife Mary of Spencer, eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willard; two sisters, Peggy Scherschel and Betty Robbins; two brothers, Norval and Charlie Robbins; and one grandchild, Deborah.

Frances was a homemaker and a member of the Methodist faith.

Maxine had been employed at Zeke’s, Jack’s Lounge, Spring Mill Inn and CJ’s Bakery. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107 Auxiliary.

Surviving are daughter, Brenda Reynolds of Mitchell; six grandchildren;  and eight great-grandchildren.

May 29, 1938 — Dec. 8, 2014 Rita Jane Fortner, 76, Bloomington, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday.

Born in Jackson County on May 29, 1938, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Martha (Rosenbaum) Gossman. Rita married her soul mate, Ronald H. Fortner on Feb. 15, 1963, in Bloomington; and he preceded her in death Oct. 3, 2008.

Rita graduated from Bedford High School and retired from Indiana University as Associate Director of Administrative Services through Public and Environmental Affairs.

She attended the Bridge Church of Christ in Unionville.

Survivors include one daughter, Treva Fortner of Colorado; one son, Terry Fortner and wife Nicole of Hartford City; in addition to her children, she has several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of Fortner’s who will miss her dearly. Rita was cared for the last four years by a devoted caregiver, Celeste LaPointe.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Shirley Hutton and brother-in-law Ron Hutton; and her husband, Ronald Fortner.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Roger, Leo, Ronald, Randy and longtime companion, Richard Henderson.

She was a member of the Paoli First Baptist Church, the past President of the Bedford Eagles 653, past member of the Woman’s Auxiliary Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion, Bedford, and a past member of the Bedford Moose Lodge. She was a former employee of Stone City Products and Extruded Alloys of Bedford.

She is survived by sons, Jody Aaron Thomas of Crossville, Tenn., Anthony George Thomas of California, and Timothy Morris Thomas, Erik James Thomas and Benjamin J Thomas, all of Bedford; daughters,  Aleta Dawn Thomas and Rhonda Jean Fields both of Paoli, and Shawn Jenine Thomas of Mitchell, brothers, Charles Weaver of Illinois and Glen Weaver and Donnie Lee Weaver, both of Bedford; sisters, Deborah J. Robert V. Hembree

Robert Vernon Hembree, 95, of Mitchell, formerly of Loogootee, died at 8:23 p.m. on Sunday at Garden Villa Nursing Home in Bedford.

He was born Aug. 9, 1919, in Rutherford Township of Martin County to the late Robert Glenn and Margaret (Altkoffer) Hembree.

On Sept. 30, 1939, he married the late Thelma Virginia (Truelove) Sanders. On the date of her death, Sept. 30, they would have celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.

He graduated from Loogootee High School in 1938 and was a member of the Loogootee United Methodist Church and the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church in Mitchell. He was also a member of the Kiwanis and Lions’ clubs in Mitchell.

He owned three grain elevators during his life in Loogootee, Orleans and Mitchell. Vernon retired from the feed business in 1984 and began a second career as a wood worker and a violin maker. Vernon also worked at the old wood shop in Spring Mill making wood products with the old tools he crafted of the period.

He is survived by two of this three sons, Larry G. Hembree of Orleans and Randall and wife Gina Hembree of Bloomington; five grandchildren, Larry D. and wife Stephanie Hembree of Loogootee, James Randall Hembree of Orleans, Landon Hembree, currently serving with the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Norfolk, Lisa R. and husband Brian Ader of Loogootee, and Lyndsee and husband Wes Hawkins of Bloomington; along with eight great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Vernon is survived by one brother, Radus Hembree of Rutherford Township.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James V. Hembree, who was killed in Vietnam on Sept. 6, 1967; one great-granddaughter, Lexi Hembree on Sept. 6, 2005; two sisters, Marie Bauer and Dorothy Neukam.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee.  Burial will follow in Goodwill Cemetery in Loogootee.

Robert D. Lewis

Robert D. Lewis, 70, of Bedford, died at 8:37 p.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Feb. 20, 1944, in Kellogg, Idaho, he was the son of Homer Daniel and Margaret (Radar) Lewis. He graduated from Needmore High School and the Cummins Apprenticeship Program.

He retired in 2003 from Cummins after working for 40 years as a machine repairman. He also raised Hereford Cattle for 37 years and was a member of the Tabernacle of Praise where he enjoyed working with the Joy group each Easter making Easter eggs. He was loved and admired by all from his church.

His hobbies were watching sports and playing golf.

Survivors include; one daughter, Michelle Hewins and husband Mark of Solsberry; one grandson, Colton Allen Hewins; one granddaughter, Cheyenne Autumn Hewins; three brothers, Gary Shelley and wife Cheryl Ann of Kellogg, Idaho, Mike Shelley and wife Judy of Osburn, Idaho and David Hanson of Wallace, Idaho; four sisters, Carol Anne Ogdon and husband Mike Ogdon of Everitt, Wash., Diane Sharp of Pinehurst, Idaho, Vickie Young of Orfino, Idaho, and Cheryl Ann Hanson of Alene, Idaho; and special friend, Sharon Hardwick and her family.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Carla Jo Lewis.

Born Aug. 4, 1929, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Emery W. and Ruth A. (Lambrecht) Phillips. She first married Wayne A. Ellingsworth in May 1949 and he preceded her in death in November 1984. She then married Clarence Deonne Williams on June 6, 1986, and he survives.

She worked at F.W. Woolworth in Human Resources. Marian’s greatest love in her life was being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She had a great passion for gardening and flowers.

 Marian was a member of Midtown Church of Christ and Wesley Chapel Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband Clarence; one daughter, Mary A. Edmonds and husband David A. of Westfield; daughter-in-law, Kyle Ellingsworth of Bedford; four grandchildren, Aimee M. Edmonds, Jeffrey D. Edmonds and wife Camille, Michael D. Ellingsworth and Cody W. Ellingsworth and wife Jenna B.; two great-granddaughters, Jerzey Ellingsworth and Haven Edmonds; and two stepchildren, DeWayne and Diana Williams of the Campbellsburg area.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband in November 1984; a brother in childbirth; and her son, Phillip Wayne Ellingsworth in August of 2011.

She enjoyed attending movies with her friends, and travelling.

Jennifer A. Cady, 63, of Bedford, passed away on Sunday at her residence.

Born April 24, 1951 in Bedford, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Lois (Chastain) McFarland. She married Thomas W. Cady on March 18, 1988; he preceded her in death on June 26, 2008.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School. She graduated from Ivy Tech Nursing School. She worked at Accessibilities in Bloomington. She loved to knit, gardening and camping.

Surviving are one daughter, Teresa Caswell and companion Rick Sexton of Bedford; four sons, Charles Garland Jr., Joseph Garland and Clayton (Angela) Garland, all of Bedford, and Kenneth Garland of Michigan City; her parents, Kenneth and Lois McFarland; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one stepdaughter, Kaly Dalton of Bedford; one brother, Zachary McFarland; and one sister, Denise McFarland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom; brother, Johnnie McFarland; and one stepson, Justice “J.A.” Cady.

William F. Miller Sr., 89, of Bedford passed away at 12:40 p.m. on Sunday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

He was born in Lawrence County on Oct. 15, 1925, to Charles W. and Martha M. (Miller) Miller. William married Dorothy (Arnold) Jenkins on Oct. 29, 1984, and she survives.

He was a mechanic at Miller’s Garage on 29th Street in Bedford, served as Private First Class in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Miller of Bedford; son, William F. (Brenda) Miller of Georgia; daughter, Linda Donaldson of Bedford; brothers, Charles Miller of California, Hobert Miller of Indianapolis, and Dean Miller of Bedford; sisters, Lois Walters of Bedford, Reva Roberts of Bedford, and Sharon Garland of Arizona; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Carol (Stansbury) Miller; daughter, Donna K. Caswell; brother, Homer Dale Miller; sister, Rose Cooney; son-in-law, Iain G. Donaldson; stepsons, Gary Jenkins and Fred Jenkins; and stepdaughters, Karen Canell and Patricia Jenkins.

Randy Eugene Brown, 56, Norman, died at 12:05 a.m. on Monday at his residence.

He was born Sept. 30, 1958, in Seymour, to Ernest R. Brown and Bonnie I. England Brown, who survive.

He was a paramedic, serving in Jackson and surrounding counties in Indiana.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Medora. He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors.

Richard Lawmaster,  son of Leroy and Esther (Spinks) Lawmaster, was born Aug. 13, 1951, in Bloomington, and died in his sleep on Dec. 5, 2014, at the age of 63 years.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Kathy; his only son, Lee (Rachel) of Bloomington; one stepson, Shan Howe of Bloomington; one brother, Larry (Marty) of Michigan; three sisters, Levonna (Mike) Adkins, Laura (Tony) Hamm and Beth (Ed) Dickten, all from Oklahoma; two granddaughters, Taylor Lawmaster and Amelia Lawmaster, both of Bloomington; five nieces and nephews; and four grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard was an employee of Westinghouse/ABB for 291/2 years. For the last 13 years, he was employed in environmental services at Indiana University.

He was a 1969 graduate of Bedford High School. He was a graduate of Ivy Tech State College and a film studies student at Indiana University.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford and a member of the Vintage Chevrolet Car Club of America as well as a member of the local Coca-Cola Memorabilia Collectors Club.

Mark Stigall

Nov. 25, 1966 — Dec. 6, 2014

Mark Stigall, 48, passed away unexpectedly and all too soon on Saturday evening. He was a resident of Morgantown.

Mark was born in Bedford on Nov. 25, 1966, to his parents, Charles L. and Cloie Ellen (Brown) Stigall. He was a 1984 graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School and went on to attend IUPUI to study business.

He met the love of his life, Julie A. Lee, at the Martinsville Rodeo, and they married on Oct. 6, 2001, in Bedford. Together they created their family, sons, Clay and Jace, who survive.

Mark will be remembered by his loving family, mother, Cloie Ellen (Jerry) George of Bedford; sisters, Charletta (Steve) Turner of Bedford and Lisa (Bryan) Bailiff of Bedford; brothers, Richard L. Stigall of Bainbridge and Randall Scott “Randy” (Lana) Stigall of Albertville, Ala.; stepsiblings: Shane George, Jonathon (Kelly) George, David (Susan) George and Michelle (Gordon) Ritchey, all of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

Mark was employed as a driver for United Parcel Service in Indianapolis for the last 29 years. He was also the owner and operator of Mark Stigall Ferrier Service in Morgantown. Mark was known as a hard worker, for his faith, dedication to family and his love of horses. He was very active in several associations involving team roping and rodeo, including the United State Team Roping Association, International Pro Roping Association, American Quarter Horse Association and the National Team Roping League. Mark was also a member of the Fair Haven Christian Church in Franklin, the National Rifle Association and the Teamsters Union Local 185 in Indianapolis.

He enjoyed teaching roping classes, and spending time with and attending his sons’ school and sports activities.

The Rev. Jeff Johnson will honor Mark’s life at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Fair Haven Christian Church, 1476 W. 300 S. in Franklin. Friends and family may call from 3-9 p.m. on Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.

She was a homemaker.

She was born in Brazil, May 11, 1976, the daughter of Roger Dulin and Mary Warrick. She graduated from Greencastle High School, Class of 1994. She later attended ISU and then Ivy Tech where she obtained her A.S. Degree in Nursing. Laura had worked in nursing homes in the past, but was currently working for Subway in Bedford.

Laura was an animal lover; enjoyed music and was an accomplished artist, especially pencil drawings. She also enjoyed talking politics and kept well informed on current issues. She was baptized as a young girl at Maryland Community Church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Betty Cooksey and Joseph Warrick and Albert and Luna Dulin; uncle Zettia Dulin; great-nephew, David Damien Williams.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Warrick, and father, Roger Dulin and his wife Erin, all of Brazil; two sons, Jonas Albright and Levi Albright of Avon; sisters, Shonna Frye of Terre Haute and Kristie Dulin McCoy of Greencastle; stepbrother, Dave Messenger (April) of West Terre Haute and stepsister, Tathia Arnold (Matt) of Bedford; four uncles, Tom and Trish Warrick of Louisiana, Jim and Patty Dulin of Brazil, Gene and Cheryl Dulin of Parke County and Jay and Phyllis Adkins of Hardy, Alaska; her boyfriend, Scott Kaiser of Bedford; nephews, one niece and other extended family.

Born Jan. 25, 1925, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Thomas Southern and Jesse Louise Southern. She married Charles Edgar Chasteen on June 5, 1939, and he preceded her in death.

She retired from RCA where she was a production worker.

She was a member of the Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday school for over 50 years.

Survivors include a son, Eddie Chasteen and wife Leetta of Bedford; two grandchildren, Andy Chasteen of Bedford and Amy Nikirk and husband Chris of Bedford; four great-grandchildren, Zachary Chasteen, Allen Chasteen, Madison Nikirk and Casen Nikirk; and three sisters, Naomi Perry of Harrodsburg, Norma Blackwell of Bedford and Beverly Schutte of Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Linda Diane; and three brothers, Wayne Southern, Robert Southern, and Thomas Jr. Southern.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Gary Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Judah Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the mortuary.

Donations may be made to the Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene Missionary Fund.

Walter D. Chastain, 77, Bedford, died at 5:03 a.m. Saturday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford. Graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mitchell Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.
