Kyle Shane Turpin

Sept. 23, 1969 — April 28, 2017

Kyle Shane Turpin, 47, of Bloomington, died Friday morning, April 28, 2017, in IU Health Bloomington Hospital. He was born September 23, 1969, in Bedford to Randy Turpin and Shona Goodman Turpin. He was a hair stylist at the Boomerang Salon.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Randy and Diana Turpin of Bedford; his mother, Shona Goodman Turpin of Bloomington; a brother, Jason Turpin of Bloomington; stepbrothers, James Walls of Springville and Bryan Walls (wife Crystal) of Bloomington; a stepsister, Shelly Chronister (husband Tracy) of Bloomington; two special nephews, Eli and Jack Turpin of Bloomington; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Kyle was a free spirit, an artist and a landscaper. Kyle loved his dogs and was loved by all who knew him.

There will be a Celebration of Life and Gathering of Family and Friends on Thursday, May 4, 2017, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Community Building at the Monroe County Fairgrounds, with Barry Southern and Greg Bell speaking at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Deremiah-Frye Mortuary, Greene & Harrell Chapel.

Ray Simmons Jr.

Dec. 16, 1923 — April 27, 2017

Ray Simmons Jr., 93, of Bedford, died at 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, 2017, at I.U. Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Dec. 16, 1923, in Bedford, he was the son of Raymond Samuel and Rose (Wagner) Simmons. He married Clella Margaret “Peggy” Stevens on Feb. 25, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 2, 2016. He was a graduate of Bedford High School and worked for Coca-Cola Bottling before joining the military.

He was a veteran serving as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, stationed in the Pacific.

He partnered with his brother at Forty’s Fish for several years. Later, he worked at Johnson’s Dairy and eventually moved to Holland Dairy where he retired as a delivery driver in 1984.

He was raised in the Free Methodist Church in Bedford. He was an associate member of F.O.P. Stone City Lodge No. 94 for 41 years. A member of the Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion for 50 years where he was an avid bowler for the Legion team. He loved baseball and was an original member of Bedford AC’s and then coached Little League for many years. He belonged to the Bedford Horseshoe League and was active with Santa’s Helpers.

Ray had a great love for his family and their get-togethers.

Survivors include three children, Steve Simmons and wife Vicky of Bedford, Pat Crane and husband Lowell of Mitchell and Mark Simmons and wife Raeanna of Columbus; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Viv Simmons of Fowler; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Lowell, Forty and Doyle Simmons; and one sister, Mary Ruth Lewis.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 1, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Dave Colgan officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens where military rites will be accorded by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Jan. 14, 1959 — April 18, 2017

Jerry Bell, 58, of Bedford, died Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at his residence.

Born Jan. 14, 1959, in Springfield, Mo., he was the son of Custer Bell and Norma (Webster) Meeks.

He was the owner and operator of the Vacuum Center in Bedford since 1980. He was a member of the Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, Monroe Co. Builders Assoc. and VDTA.

Survivors include his mother, Norma Meeks, of Camdenton, Mo.; two sons, Jeff Bell of Bedford and Jason Bell,of Bloomington; a daughter-in-law, Carrie Brinson Bell of Bloomington; grandsons, Cohen and Bennett Bell, both of Bloomington and Stanlee Bell of Bedford; three brothers, Wayne Bell of Camdenton, Mo., Randy Bell, of Bedford, Texas and Troy Meeks of Texas; a sister, Cindy Jorgenson of Dallas, Texas; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Custer Bell and stepfather, Douglas Meeks.

There will be a memorial service from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, April 30, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Following the service, there will be a Celebration of Life from 4-7:30 p.m. at the Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion where we will share food, happy memories, cry, hug, and console one another. We all loved him and will find comfort in being together in our time of mourning. His wishes were to be cremated. He wanted you all to remember him with his huge smile and happy personality. Following the celebration, his brother will take him to Missouri to rest in peace next to his father, Custer, who he loved, respected, admired, and who taught him to be the wonderful father and grandfather he will always be.

Rebecca Jill Bowden, 65, of Bedford, passed away at her residence at 5 p.m. on April 16.

She was born in Daviess County on March 27, 1952, to Moses W. and Ruth I. (Wildman) Dye. Rebecca married Michael L. Bowden in Lawrence County on July 30, 1971 and he survives.

She was a homemaker and graduate of Needmore High School.

Survivors include her husband, Michael L. Bowden of Bedford; one son, Michael W. Bowden of Lawrence County; two sisters, LaDonna Tuell of Warren and Patty Mitchell of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside rites will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday April 26, at Springville West Cemetery.

William Frederick Ford, 85, of Gilbert, Ariz., passed into Glory on April 20, 2017.

Bill was born in Heltonville.

He is survived by his wife, Janice; daughter, Diana Miller and husband Doug of Gilbert, Ariz.; and two sons, Brad Ford and wife Linda of Edinburgh and Jay Ford and wife Wendi of Huachuca City, Ariz.; grandchildren; Frederick and wife Michelle, Tonya and husband James, Jess and wife Jessica, Clint, Christopher, Shane and wife Alexandra, Ashley and husband Conner, Jonathan, Jose, Samuel, Matthew and wife Courtney, Travis, and Jenissa, and 17 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death, by his son Denny and daughter Debbie.

Lowell K. Faubion

Oct. 8, 1952 — April 22, 2017

Lowell K. Faubion, 64, Bedford, died early Saturday morning.

Lowell was born Oct. 8, 1952, in Bedford to Clarence H. and Dorothy (Allen) Faubion.

He was a member of the Donica Church of God, an avid coon hunter and retired from the Indiana State Highway Department. During the time he worked for ISHD, he worked closely with the U.A.W. in organizing the State Labor Union.

Lowell is survived by brothers, Gary (Janet) Faubion and Roger Faubion; uncles, Richard (Hazel) Allen and Herbert Allen; nephew, Derek Faubion; nieces, Olivia Faubion and Alexis Faubion; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and from noon until the service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Jones Funeral Home in Heltonville with Brother Kendall Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be at Gilgal Cemetery.

Geneieve ‘Jenny’ (Edwards) Leonard

March 19, 1927 — April 21, 2017

Geneieve “Jenny” Leonard, 90, went to be with the Lord Jesus on Friday, April 21, 2017, at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

She was born March 19, 1927, to Beryl Edwards and Hallie Burton on a small farm in the Spice Valley area west of Mitchell. She attended Bryantsville School in early school years and received a double promotion while there. At an early age her mother married Menlo “Skinner” Brewer and moved to Mitchell.

She grew up on the corner of East Main and Fourth streets. She had many friends through school, but her dearest friend was Wanda (Cole) Sweeney. She was active in school and was a beautiful majorette with the high school band. She was always proud of the fact that she graduated with Gus Grissom.

Upon graduation, she married the love of her life, Jim Leonard, and began a career managing a family-owned restaurant in Paoli, called Handy Andy’s. It was a popular stop in the surrounding area for ice cream cones and malted milkshakes. In the late 1940’s, they moved to Muncie to manage another one of the family owned restaurants and in 1950 were blessed with a son, Larry. A year later they were again blessed with a little girl, Pam.

In 1955 they moved back to Mitchell and settled down. Jenny was a hard worker and began a career as a telephone operator for several years while trying to balance a career and raise her family. After the telephone office closed, she worked at Burton’s Store for many years.

She was a wonderful wife and mother. She was also a caregiver and great friend to many people. She was blessed with two grandchildren, Todd Leonard and Brittany Meadows, but both tragically died at a young age. She was the rock that held the family together through thick and thin and always there when you needed her most. Family and close friends called her “Moose.” Don’t really know for sure how that nickname got started, but it stuck with her for the rest of her life.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mitchell for about 75 years, and the Phi Beta Psi Sorority for many years. Later in life she was a caregiver for little Brittany, her mother, Hallie, and her dear friend, Bill Head. She was truly a wonderful friend to many people and could always be counted on for help, support, and a hot cup of coffee on the corner of 12th and Main.

As her health deteriorated, she moved to StoneBridge Health Campus where she was cared for by many wonderful people who she came to know and love and they all loved her.

Jenny was preceded in death by her husband, Jim; grandchildren, Todd Leonard and Brittany Meadows; parents, Skinner and Hallie Brewer; and sister, Colleen Edwards.

She is survived by her two children, Pam (Phil) Meadows of Mitchell and Larry (Francie) Leonard of Mitchell; stepgrandchildren, Curt Day, Marci Arthur, Jamie Meadows and Gena Maddox. She also leaves eight great-grandchildren, Evan, Riley and Kinley Day, Dylan and Shealyn Arthur, Camden Meadows, and Haley and Lindsey Maddox.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 26, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Reggie Clark officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center, and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the church.

Suzanne (Lanz) Short

April 6, 1927 — April 20, 2017

Mrs. Suzanne Short (Robert W.) passed away at her home on Thursday, April 20, 2017, of natural causes. She was surrounded by her family. “Suzie”, as most people knew her, was born in Bedford, Indiana, on April 6, 1927, to Harvey Warren and Lelia Roth Lanz. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1944, and from DePauw University, Cum Laude, in 1948. Suzanne married Robert W. Short on July 24, 1949, at her family church, St. John’s Episcopal in Bedford. She had begun as a high school teacher at North Vernon High School upon her college graduation. She then taught at Martinsville High School while Robert finished law school, but after the Shorts started their family, she relinquished her teaching career. Later, after the Shorts’ three children were in their upper school years, she continued her teaching career as a substitute teacher in the Bedford School systems.

Suzanne was very active in the Bedford community. She was the first woman appointed to the Lawrence County Welfare Board by then Mayor C.J. Hauck. She was also the first woman to serve on the local governing council of St. John’s Episcopal church. Later in her life and until her death, Suzanne became a member of and supported the First Presbyterian Church.

She was a life-long member of Tri Kappa where she served as an officer including president. She was also a 50-year member and officer of Ladies of the Round Table and its auxiliary. Suzanne was one of the charter members of Lawrence County’s Pink Lady Auxiliary, and served as an acting volunteer from its inception until 2006. Throughout her time as a Pink Lady, Suzie knitted and donated hundreds of baby sweaters to Dunn Memorial Hospital. She served as a Girl Scout Leader while her daughters were part of the local scouting organization, and was an active room mother for all her children during their primary school years.

Suzanne is survived by her children, Carl (Catherine) Short of Sarasota, FL; Julia Short of Bedford and Laura Short of West Palm Beach, FL; her grandson, Bradley (Melissa) Short, and great-grandchildren, Kayla, Thomas and Jake of Poughquag, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Lelia Lanz; brothers Stewart and Harvey Jr.; her husband, Robert W., and her grandson Ryan Wesley Short.

Friends may visit the family at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, April 24, 2017. A private family burial is to be held at the family’s cemetery in Springville, IN. The family requests that you please consider contributing to either The First Presbyterian Church or the Lawrence County Boys & Girls Club in memory of Mrs. Robert Short.

Linda Lou Patton, 69, of Washington, IN, died at 11:58 a.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Methodist Hospital.

Born Dec. 9, 1947, in Avoca, IN, she was the daughter of Enoch O. and Gertie (New) Patton.

Survivors include seven brothers, Donald Patton and wife, Patty of Solsberry, Samuel Patton and wife, Eloise of Ellettsville, Clifford Patton and wife, Sue of Heltonville, George Patton of Springville, James Patton of Springville, Ronald Patton and wife, Lora of Florida and Keith Patton of Bloomington, several nieces and nephews. She preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Kenneth Patton and two sisters, Mildred Stalker and Virginia Owen.

Maxine (Johnson) Batchelor

Maxine Batchelor, 89, after a faithful lifetime walk with God, went home Friday, April 21, 2017, at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

Born July 20, 1927, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Joseph L. and Elsie Mae (Butler) Johnson. She married Carey Dawson Terrell June 5, 1943, and he preceded her in death Sept. 24, 1947. Her second marriage was to Chester Batchelor on Nov. 5, 1949, and he preceded her in death Sept. 18, 2015.

Maxine retired from the Times-Mail. She loved writing human interest articles, traveling and reading. She was an avid camper and Spring Mill was her second home. Maxine was a member of Tulip Street Christian Church.

Survivors include her children, Patricia (Leon) Bennett of Mitchell, and Nelson (Charla) Terrell of Mitchell; grandchildren, Lynnette Lacny, Kathy Murphy, Kristie Decker, Heather Niehoff and Holly Davidson; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Victoria Chitwood, of Mitchell.

Her parents; husbands; great-granddaughter, Abigail Decker; and sisters, Mary Alford, Lavon McCart and Shirley Warren, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Monday, April 24, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Brother Jim Valentine and Brother Darrin Chastain officiating.

Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Mitchell Cemetery.

Virginia Mae (Fountain) Batman

Virginia Mae (Fountain) Batman, 89, of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, at Garden Villa.

Born Feb. 9, 1928, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Charles and Mary E. (Blackburn) Fountain. She married Charles E. Batman on Nov. 19, 1951; he preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1995.

She graduated from Shawswick High School with the Class of 1946.

Virginia was a member of Leatherwood Christian Church. She was a member of the Lawrence County Farm Bureau.

She worked as a CPA’s assistant and also as a Children’s Aid at North Lawrence Community Schools. Virginia was a homemaker.

Surviving are one son, Chester Batman of Bedford; two daughters, Cathy Clouse and Jane Pace, both of Bedford; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; one son, Carl Batman; one daughter, Eva Batman; son-in-law, David Clouse; three sisters, Lois Pentzer, Mary Plake, and Hazel Brown; and two brothers, Kenneth and Louis Fountain.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 24, at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes with Pastor John Wisley officiating. Burial will be in Crawford Cemetery.

Timothy ‘Tim’ King

August 26, 1953 — April 18, 2017

Timothy A. “Tim” King, age 63, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his family.

He was born and raised in Bedford to Francis Tanny and Erma Jean (Richardson) King and was the oldest of three children.

Tim married the love of his life, Dietra Lynn Hardwick, on June 8, 1987. The two shared an inseparable bond of love and faith in Christ that is evident today throughout the King family.

He was an honest, hard-working man, hauling gasoline in a semi-truck for over 35 years at the Sprint Oil and Wischmeier Trucking Companies.

He was an active member of the Free Methodist Church in Bedford where he was given the opportunity to serve as a missionary in Africa from 1974 to 1976 to share Christ’s love to those in a foreign land.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Tyra Hardwick.

Surviving members of Tim’s family are his wife, Dietra and mother-in-law, Suzanne Hardwick; two sisters, Nina Jean McBride (John) and Pamela Kay McIntyre (Dale), both of Bedford; two children, William Jarad King (Megan) of Springville and Whitney Dawn Dyer (Jeremy) of Fountain Inn, S.C.; four grandchildren, Kaurianne Quinn King, Beckham Gray King, Emerson Dawn Dyer, and Adelyne Anne Dyer; brother-in-law, Trent (Bobbi) Hardwick; three nieces, Jordyn McIntyre, Bailey McBride, Trinity Hardwick; and two nephews, Ryan McBride and Braxtan Hardwick.

The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to the health care professionals at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, especially the critical care unit 4-East, for the unwavering and gentle care they provided Tim.

The family is also blessed to have the congregation of the Free Methodist Church in Bedford for the outpouring of prayers, the warm hugs, and meals provided throughout the family’s journey.

Funeral service will be at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, April 21, at Free Methodist Church, Bedford, with Pastor Mike Courtney and Pastor John Lane officiating. Burial will be in Williams Church of Christ Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Free Methodist Church, Bedford.

She graduated from Paoli High School. She was a homemaker.

Patricia was of the Christian Faith.

Surviving are one daughter, Sheila; one stepdaughter, Mary (Ken) Berkshire; one stepson, Paul Moss; two grandsons, Matthew (Mary) Tafflinger and Michael Shane Tafflinger; two stepgrandsons, Martin (Amy) Berkshire and James Berkshire; and several great-grandchildren.

Patricia Joan Miracle, 82, formerly of Mitchell, passed away Monday, April 17, 2017, at her residence.

Born April 3, 1935, in Chillicothe, Mo., she was the daughter of Russell and Mildred Agnes (Wright) Alexander. She married C. R. Miracle Dec. 29, 1957, and he preceded her in death Aug. 26, 2014.

Pat was a homemaker and a devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed gardening, canning, embroidering, and was an excellent seamstress. She was a 1953 graduate of Mitchell High School and a 1957 graduate of Indiana University where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Pat was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children, Alexander R. (Tracy) Miracle of Bloomington, Cynthia Dawn (Steven) Sipe of Lebanon, and Steven Ray (Brandy) Miracle of Springville; grandchildren, Adam (Kelsey) Miracle, Cassie (Logan) Wegleitner, Mimi (Tyler) Deckard, Preston (Valerie) Sipe, Landon (Hannah) Sipe, Taylor (Jake) Bernard, C. J. Bradley, Erin Bradley, and Emma Miracle; three great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert (Peggy) Alexander of Florida.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 23, at the First Baptist Church with Reverend Reggie Clark officiating.

Ruth Ann McKinney, 74, Martinsville, passed away at 1:10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2017, at her daughter’s home.

She was born on Saturday, Aug. 8, 1942, in Oolitic, to the late Ellery and Maudie (Reynolds) Kirkman.

Ruth was a 1960 graduate of Oolitic High School in Oolitic. She was a full-time mother of four and worked as a cashier at the Kroger’s in Martinsville. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her children, Robert E. McKinney Jr. and wife Rhonda of Martinsville, Randall McKinney of Savannah, Ga., Ricky McKinney and wife Traci of Martinsville and Robin Cunningham and husband Mike of Martinsville; brothers, Tom Kirkman and wife Beth of Michigan, Junior Kirkman and wife Warnetta of Oolitic and Charles Kirkman and wife Judy of Bedford; sisters, Mary Riley and husband Phil of Mitchell; sister-in-law, Wanda Kirkman of Illinois; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Ruth was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. McKinney Sr., whom she married on May 19, 1960, and he passed away on Dec. 14, 2005; brother, Kenny Kirkman; and sister, Margie Staggs.

Nancy Theresa Schroeder, 96, of Bedford, died at 2:20 a.m., Saturday, April 15, 2017, at StoneBridge Health Campus, Bedford.

Born July 27, 1920, in Altamonte, Calabria, Italy, she was the daughter of Frank and Theresa Paledino. She married Fred A. Schroeder on March 27, 1943 and he died Nov. 25, 1995.

She and her husband operated the Dog & Suds Drive-In, Bedford, in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. She also worked at NAD Crane, and Bedford Middle School. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Nancy was a very caring person who loved everyone. She was a very good cook.

Surviving are one brother, Jim Paledino of Dalton, Ill.; and two sisters, Mary Hall of Arlington, Texas and Rose Crane of Bloomington; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred; her daughter, Karen; her son, Jim, who was her pride and joy; and three brothers, Joe, Frank and John Paledino.

Born Jan. 12, 1941 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Jesse L. and Gladys (Hobson) Tincher. He married Kay Jackson on Feb. 26, 1965, and she survives.

He was retired from General Motors and was a member of UAW Local No. 440.

He is survived by wife, Kay; daughter, Pamela Brown; grandson, Devin Brown; three sisters, Joan (Larry) Brown, Connie (Bill) Branaman and Jeanie (Jesse) Morris; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas was retired from the United States Air Force.

Born Sept. 22, 1933, in London, Ky., she was the daughter of Charles E. and Sara E. (Sproles) Grogan. She married James Byrd on Jan. 8, 1955, and he died Oct. 2, 2013.

She was a homemaker and had been employed at RCA.

Born Nov. 2, 1933, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Chromer and Georgia (Turney) Browning. She married Robert M. Kindred on Aug. 14, 1953; and he survives.

She graduated from Bedford High School, Class of 1951. Shirley worked many secretarial positions.

She was a member of the Davis Memorial Church of the Nazarene. She was deeply devoted to her church and God.

She loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren. Shirley loved camping and was a member of the Good Sam’s Camping Club.

Surviving are her husband, Robert; one son, Mark Kindred; one daughter, Melinda (Brad) Scott; grandchildren, Aaron (Rachel) Kindred, Shelby (Chris) Easterday and Sydney Henderson; great-grandchildren, Garrett, Jayla, Oliver, Penelope, Eli and Treyton; one sister, Gladys Chastain; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Bedford High School with the Class of 1961. He was a member of Pinhook Christian Church.

Harry worked as a tool and die maker at GM Powertrain, where he retired in 1979. He was a member of SCAVI, South Central Association of Visually Impaired and UAW Local No. 440. Harry was a Veteran of the United States Navy, where he was stationed in Rota, Spain; serving on the USS Forrestal and USS Enterprise; he was also a member of the Blind Veterans Association.

He was a Promise Keeper.

Surviving are his wife, Janet; one son, Jonathan (Jennifer) Demaree of Bedford; two grandchildren, Chris J. Demaree and Hailey Nichole Demaree; two stepgrandchildren, Jamie (John) Sharp and Janelle Benham; one step-great-grandchild, Kayson Benham; and one brother, Alan Demaree, of Bedford.

Frank attended Work of God Church. He had a love for horses and enjoyed woodworking and playing guitar.

Born March 13, 1925, in Bedford, he was he son of Carl Edra Pearson and Alice E. (Ray) Pearson. He married Patricia Benckart Aug. 25, 1947; she died Feb. 24, 2014.

Watson was a graduate of Indiana University with a degree in Chemistry, graduating Magna Cum Laude; he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II and was Chief Metallurgist at GM Powertrain, Bedford, retiring in 1986.

Watson was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 1166, Bedford; he was also a member of the American Legion, Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford.

Surviving are two sons, Michael W. (Nikki) Pearson of Eliot, Maine and Stephen C. Chet Patton, 67, of Indianapolis, formerly of Oolitic, died Saturday, April 1, 2017. He was born May 9, 1949, in Sullivan, Indiana, to Chester and Dorothy Patton.

Chet graduated from Oolitic High School. He retired from Citizens Gas Co. in 2001.

Lois Ann Fox, 74, of Bedford, died Thursday, April 13, 2017, at her residence.

Born May 10, 1942, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Austin and Doris L. (Grant) McClellan. She married Howard D. Ragsdale in 1960, and later married Dale Fox in 1984, who preceded her in death in 2010.

She was a graduate of the Bedford High School with the Class of 1960 and received her bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Marian College and later received her bachelor’s degree in Human Resources from Oakland City College. She retired as a registered nurse for the North Lawrence School System and had previously worked at the Bedford Medical Center and as a director of nurses at the Hospitality House.

She was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church where she enjoyed attending Ladies Small Group Class. She was on the Patient Advocacy Board at the Bedford Medical Center. She was a Master Gardener and member of the Gardener’s Exchange and also a member of the Quarry Quilters.

She collected and toured lighthouses of the maritime coasts and Great Lakes.

Survivors include a son, William Ragsdale and wife Michelle, of Maysville, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Debbie Ellis and husband Ron of Mitchell and Amy Hiott and husband Jeff of Fishers; six grandchildren, Corey Himes, Jessica Cline, Adam Coulter, Sarah McNulty and Nate and Nick Hiott; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Mary Alice McClellan.

Sherry Joan Underwood, 85, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, April 13, 2017, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of Oolitic Road.

Born May 27, 1931, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Michael and Minnie (Lantz) Drehobl. She married Walter “Ike” Underwood on Dec. 1, 1951; and he passed away on Nov. 14, 2005.

She worked as the secretary at the UAW Local No. 440, from which she retired after 30 years.

Sherry was a graduate of Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, and the Altar Society. Sherry was also a member of the local No. 440 retiree chapter and a euchre club for over 60 years. She was a big sports enthusiast. She loved knitting and was a proud member of the Lawrence County Democrats.

Surviving are two sons, Jim (Deborah) Underwood of Springville, and John Underwood of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Jane (Larry) Root of Mitchell, and Jo Ann Underwood of Bedford; five grandchildren, Chad (Lauren) Underwood, Ben (Laurel) Underwood, Jessica (Amit) Patel, Kristi (C.J.) Lee, and Amy (Westin) Williamson; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Sally (Jim) Bullock; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ike; daughter, Judy Underwood; son, Michael in infancy; granddaughter, Stacie; and infant grandson, Christopher.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford, with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Monday at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes. The Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m.

Clifford Gene Buckingham, born in Carmi, Ill., on Sept. 1, 1950, to Leo Dwight and Belle P. (Quencas) Buckingham, passed away April 10, 2017.

He retired from General Electric, Bloomington, after 36 years. He married C. Denise Perkins, daughter of Denny and Samantha Perkins, on Aug. 28, 1971.

Cliff was very proud of his family. Survivors include his wife. Denise; daughter. Catherine S. Buckingham of Yosemite National Park, Calif.; one son, Paul D. (Christine Birzer) Buckingham of Mason, Ohio; two grandsons, Connor and Ryan Buckingham of Mason, Ohio; one brother, Jeffrey D. (Eileen Smith) Buckingham of Tacoma, Wash.; two nieces, Elizabeth C. Buckingham (James Bowen) of Tacoma, Wash., and Victoria A. Buckingham of Lakewood, Wash.; one nephew, Christopher E. Buckingham of Tacoma, Wash.; and several great-nieces and nephews.

The Buckinghams have treasured our state and national parks throughout their marriage and had been serving as campground hosts since retiring in 2012. Cliff was especially proud to have been a volunteer on the US Missouri stationed in Honolulu for a week, helping to replace the teak decking on the ship his father was on during World War II. Buckingham also has been campground host in McCormick’s Creek and Guadalupe Mountains National Park for several years each.

Cliff was a member of the Bedford Dulcimer Society, enjoying performances using a washtub bass he designed and built. He enjoyed collecting coins.

Arthur Lee “Art” Guthrie, 77, of Bedford, died Sunday, April 9, 2017.

Born Nov. 5, 1939, he was the son of Raymond “Sharky” and Molly (Murphin) Guthrie. He married Imogene Guthrie, and she survives.

Art was retired from General Motors, Bedford Plant, as a machine repairman, and he was currently employed at Hubler Chevrolet in Bedford. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of Christian Faith. He was also a farmer and enjoyed raising cattle and chickens.

Art was an avid coon hunter and deer hunter for many years and he made friends everywhere he went.

Art was loved by all.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene Guthrie of Bedford; sons, Michael D. (Lyla) Brown of Bedford and Gary L. (Tracy) Brown of Bedford; grandsons, Casey L. (Jencie) Brown and Cody R. Brown, both of Bedford; brothers James Guthrie of Bedford, George (Arlene) Guthrie of Columbus, Stanley (Brenda) Guthrie of Bedford; sister Clara (Jerry) Deaton of Bedford; sisters-in-law Mary Lorene Guthrie of Mitchell and Mary Rose (Don) Guthrie of Medora; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Art was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William “Mike” Guthrie and Patrick Joe Guthrie; and sister, Myrtle Arnold, and two infant siblings.

Harold Duane Vaught, 72, passed away Friday, April 7, 2017, at his residence.

Born Sept. 9, 1944, in Mitchell, he was the son of George and Dorothy (Burgess) Vaught. He married Sandra Louella Neely Sept. 17, 1986, and she preceded him in death May 19, 2007.

Harold was a Canine Police Officer at Naval Surface Warfare Center — Crane. He enjoyed playing music and recently played at the Ryman Auditorium. Harold was a member of the Spring Mill Lodge Fraternal Order of Police No. 172, American Legion Post No. 250, and a veteran of the U. S. Army.

He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1963.

Survivors include his children, Peggy (Brian) Gerkin of Mitchell, Jim (Samantha) Fox of Mitchell, Brenda Freeman of Shoals, Jody Johnson of Mitchell, Vickie (Jon) Gilstrap of Campbellsburg, Jennifer Gammon of Mitchell, Tracey (Michelle) Vaught of Kansas, Duane (Melissa) Vaught of Kansas, and Todd Vaught of Kansas; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

His parents; wife; and siblings, Milton Dean Vaught, Gerald Lee Vaught, Donald William Vaught, twin brother, Howard W. Vaught, Gordon Dee Vaught, Susan Phyllis Vaught, Winifred June Kern, Pauline Ruth Cox, Jeralene Bonnie Hopkins, and Sharon Kay Campbell, preceded him in death.

Kevin Woods, 55, of Mitchell, passed away on April 4, 2017, at IU Health Bedford Hospital.

He was born May 1, 1961, in Paoli, the son of Bruce and Sarah (Hawk) Woods. He married Cheryl (Foster) Woods on July 19, 1997, and she survives.

He is survived by his wife of Mitchell; one son, Cody Dobner (Stacy) of Orleans; one daughter, Erika Wilson of Bloomington; six grandchildren; one sister, Martha Jo Rufner (Ron); two brothers, Chuck Sears (Donna) and Roger Thacker; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Thacker; maternal grandparents; and one sister, Eldeena “Kay” Speer.

He was a member of Tulip Street Christian Church and member of UAW Local 440. He was employed at General Motors for four years as a SPM Tech and Essex in Orleans for 21 years. He was also a graduate of Orleans High School, Class of 1979 and a friend of Bill W.

A memorial service will be at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the Tulip Street Christian Church in Mitchell. The visitation will be from noon until the service at the church.

Born July 20, 1936, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Roy Allen and Myrtle (Fullen) Chastain and stepfather, Hap Chastain. She married Bernard Johnson on Aug. 20, 1955, and he survives.

She had worked as a clerk at the 3-D Store and was a volunteer at I.U. Health in Bedford. She was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church and former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, Bernard of Bedford; two daughters, Lynn Mullis and husband Brian and Lisa Mathews and husband Bill, all of Bedford; five grandchildren, Brad Burton of Washington, D.C., Jesse Burton, Adam Mullis and wife Christie, Scott Mathews and wife Ashley and Jake Mathews, all of Bedford; two great-grandchildren, Jenna and Averie Mullis; and a half-sister, Sharon McAfee, of Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jim Allen; and a daughter, Kelly Burton.

Born Dec. 11, 1930, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Carl and Dorothy Glen (Burton) Ratliff. She married Muriel Edwin White on Jan. 29, 1949, and he preceded her in death on April 16, 2001.

She was a member of the Englewood Baptist Church where she served in the choir, with the missionary ladies, and Rosebud and Guild Girls Leader. She was a past Boy Scout Leader and 4-H Leader. Betty raised her family first then was a babysitter for over forty years. She loved and nurtured many children as her own. She had the patience of a saint. Her hobbies were sewing, quilting, and a card ministry.

Born July 26, 1926, in Bedford, he was the son of Raymond and Elizabeth (Cummings) Fish. He married Agnes Marie Wagner on June 17, 1944, and she died June 25, 2012.

He was a delivery driver for Hostess Bakery for over 40 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Lana Wray and husband Joe, Diana Sego and husband Jerry, and Linda Olson and husband Larry, all of Bedford; a grandson raised in the home, Sean Benham and wife Sonya of Chicago; three sisters, Patsy Wever, Wanda McPike and Colleen Robbins, all of Bedford; a brother, David Fish of Bedford; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two sisters, Maxine Dalton and June Roberts; and a grandson, Brian Olson.

Mr. Larry David Brown, 70, of Lebanon, Tenn., died Saturday, March 25, 2017.

Larry, the firstborn son of William David and Faith Adams Brown, was born on Sept. 18, 1946, in Greencastle. He married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Orr, on June 26, 1965. He graduated Bedford High School in Bedford in May 1966.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in June of 1966. He served during the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1972. He and Elaine lived in many states during his 20-year service to our country, finally retiring at Barksdale Air Force Base as a Master Sergeant in June 1986.

His hobbies included amateur radio, woodworking, reading, and riding motorcycles. He had earned an Amateur Extra Radio Class license, and his call sign was W4APH. He enjoyed hunting and his favorite fishing hole was Lake Bistanou, La. He volunteered with the Wilson County Sherriff’s Office SCAN Program, and participated in the Army MARS Program, FISTS, and the World Radio Relay.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Elaine Orr Brown; his brother, Darrell Duane Brown (married to Sherry Hall Brown) of Mooresville; his two children, Wendi Renee Mason of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Benjamin Lee Brown (married to Thuy Nguyen) of Bossier City, La.; his grandchildren Jared Mason (married to Amanda Clarke Mason) of St. Louis, Mo., and Jacob and Jeremiah Mason; his great-grandsons, Max and Alex Nhieu; two nephews and one niece.

He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

His Memorial Service was at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Sellars Funeral Home, Lebanon, Tenn.

David Lee Flynn, 81, of Tavares, Fla., passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017.

He was born March 31, 1936, in Bedford, to Paul and Una Flynn. He married Corrinna Donica Flynn and they had two children.

He worked as a furniture salesman and owned his own lamp business.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan and Dana Arthur of Bedford; grandchildren, Brady and Mavis Arthur; and his sister Barbara Kelley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, J.D. Flynn; and a brother, Ed Flynn.

He was active in the Donica Church of God as a music leader and a long time gospel quartet singer.

John Leonard Wathen, 88, of Bedford, died at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Nov. 5, 1928, in Morganfield, Ky., he was the son of John Gordon and Mary A. (Greenwell) Wathen.

He married Betty Brendel on Sept. 9, 1950, and she passed away on March 8, 2007.

John was the manager of A&H Truck Line in Bedford, retiring in 1986. He then worked at Otis Golf Course Pro Shop until fully retiring in 2008.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford; Knights of Columbus Council No. 1166 and Assembly No. 1921 (4th Degree) of Bedford; John was an avid golfer and member of Otis Park Men’s Club, where he served as Treasurer.

Surviving are three daughters, Kathleen S. (Dennis) Foster of Cumming, Ga., Vicki Wathen of Bedford and Rebecca L. (Brian) Murphy of Ooltewah, Tenn.; two sons, James L. Iris Jean Wood, age 101, passed away Sunday, April 2, 2017, at I.U. Hospice House, Bloomington.

She was born May 28, 1915, in Kahoka Mo., to Claude L. and Lily (Alexander) Fish.

She was a 1932 graduate of Bedford High School and resided in Bedford most of her life. She was married twice, first to Tom Sargent in 1940, who preceded her in death in 1955, and to Charles L. “Chic” Wood, in 1964. He preceded her in death in 1968.

She retired as office manager of Thompson Dairy. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church and the I.U. Health Bedford Auxiliary. She was passionate about knitting, baking, and her family. She will be remembered for her sweet demeanor and loving spirit.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann (Byron) Steele of Bedford; her son, Timothy (Fran) Sargent of Goodyear, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Barbara (Scott) Mitchell and Bradley (Kim) Steele, M.D.; and five great-granddaughters, Kaitlyn, Lauren, and Molly Mitchell and Iris and Isabella Steele.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Richard Fish; and two sisters, Judith McCarrell and Betty Henderson.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 8, at the First Baptist Church, 1515 20th Street, Bedford.

There will be no public visitation.

Michael D. Saunders, 56, of Williams, died at 12:34 a.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2017, at his residence.

Born Nov. 3, 1960, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Ronald Saunders and Cherlyn (Flynn) Schneider.

Michael was a graduate of B.N.L. High School and had attended Living Word Church in Bedford. Michael had worked at G.E., Bloomington and also worked at Dana Corp., Mitchell.

He is survived by his mother, Cherlyn Schneider of Ohio; daughter, Ashley (Sean) Burk of Plainfield; son, Jeremy (Vea) Saunders of Williams; grandchildren, Ethan and Asiah Saunders and Madison Burk; sister, Dawn; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Marie Flynn; father, Ronald; and brother, Rocky Saunders.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 7, at the Ferguson-Lee Chapel of Thorne-George Family Funeral Homes. Burial will be in the Lowder Cemetery in Springville.

Linda D. New, 67, of Bedford, died at 8:07 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at Kindred Hospital South in Greenwood.

Born Dec. 16, 1949, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Edward and Katherine (Crawford) Horner. She married Phillip New on Sept. 3, 1966, and he survives.

She was a former Faculty Secretary and Administrative Assistant for Oakland City College in Bedford.

Survivors include her husband, Phillip of Bedford; a daughter, Misty Sheetz of Bedford; her mother, Katherine; four grandchildren, Chelsee New, Jessica Hackney, Camysha New and Destiny New; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Marsha Silvers of Bedford; and a brother, Brian Horner of Paris Crossing.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward; a daughter, Cheryl New; two grandchildren, Tyler Meeks and Hope New; and two brothers, Michael and John Horner.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 7, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. Visitation will be from noon until the service on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Ronald C. Crockett

April 6, 1932 — Dec. 26, 2016

Ronald C. Crockett, 84, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2016, at his home. He was born in Bedford on April 6, 1932 to Ancil and Ruth Alma (Stalcup) Crockett. Ronald graduated from Bedford High School in Bedford, Indiana in 1950, going into the U.S. Army in 1952, and after retiring, settled down in Orange County, CA, with his family.

Joining the Army at 20, Ronald began his lengthy army career first stationed in Mannheim, Germany, where he met his wife of 54 years, Marie. Ronald worked for eight years in communications and electronic warfare positions, while his remaining time in the army was spent in various data processing positions around the world.

The Crockett family moved every few years to a new location, which also turned out to be the birthplaces of many of Ronald and Marie’s six daughters: White Sands Missile Range, NM / El Paso, TX; Orleans, France; Fort Monmouth, NJ; and Heidelberg, Germany, before deciding to live and play in sunny Southern California. In 1969, Ronald was stationed in Korea for a year while his family remained in California.

After retiring from the army as a Master Sergeant in 1973, Ronald began his second career supervising software development for CSC Corporation and Transamerica. During this time, Ronald also received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration with a concentration in data processing from Fullerton State University in 1979.

Around the 1980’s, with the Crockett name and hearing that his wife Marie’s family could trace their German ancestors to the year 1715, Ronald developed an interest in genealogy. From his research, Ronald learned of the family connections with the Browning, Stalcup, Murphy, Ooley, and several other families. Two notable stories he told were finding out that our branch of the Crockett family was descended from the uncle of Davy Crockett, and that the earliest American Stalcup relative was a 16-year-old boy that came to America in the 1640’s.

Ronald was predeceased by his mother, Ruth in 1957; his father, Ancil in 1979; his wife, Marie; his daughter, Diana Long; his son-in-law, John Worman; and his grandson, Camden Murphy. Survivors are five daughters and four sons-in-law: Christel Worman; Carol Crockett & Gary Benson; Deborah & Reggie Murphy; Tina & Brian Kammerzelt; Connie & Scott Taylor. As well as four granddaughters and one grandson-in-law: Sandra Worman & Robert MacNeil, Jennifer Garner, Michelle Long, and Paige Murphy; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Kaden and Kylee.

Ronald was an avid reader of all things printed, enjoyed the game of golf for most of his life, and gladly served as treasurer for the Costa Mesa Country Club in his senior years. Ronald was proud of his large family, and will be missed by those that loved and cared for him.

Elizabeth L. (Van Rheeden) Buttz

Oct. 13, 1923 — April 1, 2017

Elizabeth L. Buttz, 93, of Bedford, died at 6:58 p.m. on Saturday, April 1, at the Johnson Christian Village with her loving family by her side.

Born Oct. 13, 1923, in Villa Grove, Ill., she was the daughter of Henry and Jessie (Metzler) Van Rheeden. She married Dr. John R. Buttz on May 30, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 11, 2006.

She was an accomplished vocalist. A beloved wife and mother. She was the living example in both support of her husband and her family. She thrilled hundreds of people over her lifetime with her beautiful voice. She sang at the annual commissioning service for missionaries of the Church of God at the convention center in Anderson, with over 8,000 persons present. She was well-known throughout the state of Indiana and Ohio for her beautiful voice, not only in the church community, but in the secular community as well. She provided total support to her husband and sons. No task was too great, no burden too heavy for her family.

Survivors include three sons, John R. Buttz and his wife Carolyn, Charles E. Buttz and his wife Mary Ann, all of Bedford and James H. Buttz and his wife Regina of Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren, Shauna Dalton, Erin Lewis, Amy Glenn, Scott Buttz, Dana Buttz, and Tara Elliott; 11 great-grandchildren, Macy Blackwell, Sable Dalton, Sadie Glenn, Connor Glenn, Ella Tran, Alexa Tran, Mason Buttz, Terek Lewis, Brae Lewis, London Elliott, and Lyla Elliott; two great-great-grandchildren, Lux Blackwell and Thea Blackwell; four stepgrandchildren, Jeremy Buck, Brandon Buck, Donnie Buck, and Trisha Morrow.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and eight siblings.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 7, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Lee Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Jeffrey Scott “Blacky” Blackwell, 55, of Bedford, died Sunday, April 2, 2017 at his residence.

Born Nov. 28, 1961, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Jackie Lee and Janice Kay (Smith) Blackwell. He was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School with the Class of 1980. While in high school, he was selected to the first team all-state in football and all conference in baseball.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the First Baptist Church in Bedford. He enjoyed sports and his family, but what he loved most was watching his son, Logan play hockey, and his daughter, Jacke cheer. He loved deeply and was deeply loved.

Survivors include a son, Jeffrey Logan Blackwell and fiancé, Christina Beyerl; a daughter, Jackelyn Blackwell and boyfriend, Damian Lahr; their mother, Terri Blackwell, all of Fishers; a brother, Jim Blackwell and wife Julie of Atlanta; a sister, Julie Chase of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, at the First Baptist Church in Bedford with Pastor Kyle Chase officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Mary C. (Cahill) Henson

Mary C. Henson, 75, of Bloomington, formerly of Bedford, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on April 4, 2017.

Born Dec. 15, 1941, in Bedford, she was preceded in death by her parents, Howard E., and Ruth (Williams) Cahill of Bedford, her sisters, Ruth Evelyn Baker and Lois Cahill and brother, Wendell Cahill.

Mary was retired from University Publishing Corp. and then became a caregiver for her mother and babysat for all her grandchildren, as well as several friends of the family’s children. She saw all children as a member of her own family and opened her home to them. She was known to them as Gmaw and they all knew they would be welcomed with open arms.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years, William “Bill” Henson; one brother Edwin (Donna) Cahill; two sons, Mark Butcher and Scott (Jennifer) Butcher; four daughters, Lisa Butcher (Scott May), Tracy (Gary) Meadows, Angel Butcher and Monice Henson, all of Bloomington; grandchildren, Jordan (Keisha) Butcher, Shane (Katie Denny) Meadows, David Butcher, Jared (Natasha Carter) Meadows, Emily Butcher, LaMonte Henson, William Henson, Julian Henson, Dakota Hawkins, Madison Hawkins and Kinsey Presley-Hornung; great-grandchildren, Alliyah Butcher, Ezra Butcher, Adalynn Butcher, Nola Meadows, Amelia Meadows and Foster Meadows; six nieces; and five nephews.

Service for Mary Henson will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 7, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, Bloomington, with the Rev. Michael Douglas officiating. Burial will follow in Valhalla Memory Gardens, Bloomington.

Philip Lloyd Brim, 74, of Bedford, died Sunday, April 2, 2017.

He was born and raised in Heltonville, the son of Leonard Harvey and Bernice (Croucher) Brim. He was a graduate of Heltonville High School, a U.S. Air Force veteran and a retired union sheet metal worker.

He married Blanche Ruth (Sears) Brim on Dec. 14, 1990, and she survives.

Also surviving are two brothers, Robert Brim Sr. of Heltonville and Harold Brim of Homasass, Fla.; two sisters, Mable Bryant of Florida and Willabelle Hunter of Grandbury, Texas; two stepdaughters, Ginger Mae Roach and companion David Luttrell and Scarlett (David) Baker, all of Bedford; two grandchildren, Megan Ernst and her companion Kristopher Dennis of Bedford, and Dalton Baker of Louisville, Ky.; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Carl Brim of Heltonville; three half brothers, Ervin Brim and Perry Croucher of Florida, and Onis Brim of Bethell, Wash.; one sister, Emogene Fountain of Norman; and one half sister, Mary Shankland of Connecticut.

A celebration of life will be held at Gulletts Creek Baptist Church in Needmore at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday with the Rev. Billy Brim officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday at the church.

Gerald Dean ‘Jerry’ Bundy

Gerald Dean “Jerry” Bundy, 78, Mitchell, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Aug. 6, 1938, in Mitchell, he was the son of Millie Jacob and Ethel (Ramey) Bundy. He married Carolyn Sue Bell June 23, 1960.

Jerry was a bus driver for the Mitchell Community Schools and retired after 33 years. He was a bus driver for the City of Mitchell, owner of Bundy’s Auto Detail Shop, and was a member of River’s Edge Fellowship.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Sue Bundy of Mitchell; his children, Vivian (Russell) Blackwell of Mitchell; Kimberly Bundy of Bedford, and Edward Dean Bundy of Seymour; grandchildren, Zachary Blackwell, Joshua Blackwell, Tamara Walls and Jessica Spain; eight great-grandchildren; and a half brother, Doug Wilcoxen of Mitchell.

His parents; daughter, Tammy Sue Smale; and siblings, Stanley Bundy, Mervin Bundy, Jack Bundy, Robert Bundy, Junior Bundy, Marie Gilbert, Linda Sue McCain, Wanda Jones, Betty Bundy and Ruby Bundy, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 7, in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Mitchell with Pastor Phil Thorne officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Clora Mae Baker

Clora Mae Baker, 69, of Orleans, passed away on April 3, 2017 at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale in Carbondale, Ill.

She was born Jan. 21, 1948, in Bedford, the daughter of Howard P. and Bethel N. (Newlin) Baker.

She was a member of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She was an esteemed associate professor for the Department of Workforce Education and Development at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill. She was an alumnus of the Ohio State University, she held a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction in professional development in business and vocational education. She was active in the Illinois Business Education Association, Indiana Business Education Association, National Business Education Association, Society for Human Resource Management and Phi Delta Kappa International.

She also spent time showing her strength as a cancer survivor by volunteering with the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

She was survived by nine cousins, Kenny Newlin of Orleans, Marilyn Powers of Illinois, Mark Newlin (Joyce) of Plainfield, Joel Newlin (Vicki) of Orleans, Paul Newlin of Seymour, Evelyn Hittson of Maine, Anna Cason of Florida, Lavonna O’Korn of Colorado, and Jarome Hudleson of Colorado.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 7, at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Pastor Corey Rash officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Orleans.

Friends are invited to visitation at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday.

William L. Wires, 88, of Bedford, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at the StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

William was born Oct. 4, 1928, in Lawrence County and was the son of the late Lewis and Audna (Henderson) Wires.

William was a homebuilder and loved to be out in his shed working in his free time. He also enjoyed riding around StoneBridge in his motorized wheelchair and talking to everyone.

Survivors include two sons, Ed Wires (wife Jean) and Jim Wires (wife Wanita); daughter Kelly Riley (husband Kevin); five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Arlena Fay Wires in September 2016.

Nita F. Pruett, 93, of Oolitic passed away peacefully at her home at 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 30, 2017. She was born in Lawrence County on Feb. 16, 1924, to Lacy and Inez (Allison) Elliott.

Nita retired from Stone City Products in Bedford and RCA in Bloomington. She was a lifelong member of the Oolitic United Methodist Church. She married John Pruett on May 23, 1942, in Lawrence County and he preceded her in death on May 17, 1992.

Survivors include two sons, John H. Pruett of Williams and Philip Pruett of Oolitic; four grandchildren, Lisa Hughes, Louie Pruett, Michael Pruett and Craig Pruett; 14 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and four siblings.

Private chapel services will be held at Cresthaven Memory Gardens. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Oolitic United Methodist Church.

Ilene Lou Hardman

Ilene Lou Hardman, 80, passed away Thursday, March 30, 2017, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Feb. 3, 1937, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Roland Lewis and Myrtle Alberta (Naugle) Mendenhall. She married Daniel E. Hardman June 14, 1953, and he preceded her in death Aug, 24, 1995.

Ilene was Marion Township Trustee for more than 20 years, and had also been manager of the Mitchell License Branch. She was a member of the Mitchell Lions Club, Lawrence County Republicans, Indiana Township Association, United Township Association, American Legion Post No. 250 Auxiliary and Jacob Finger United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her children, Dennis Eugene Hardman of Mitchell, Danetta June (Jack) Dorsett of Nashville, and Larry (Michele) Hardman of Bloomington; grandchildren, Beth Ann Staley, Jacklyn Dorsett, Dennis Dorsett, Destiny Duke, Devon Cassidy, Joshua Hardman, Kelsey Hardman and Logan Hardman; eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Marlene Boyer of Bedford.

Her parents; husband; and sister, Loretta June Mendenhall, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 3, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Brenda L. Ludwig officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.
