Sept. 9, 1944 — April 27, 2016

Howard W. Vaught, 71, of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at his residence.

Born Sept. 9, 1944, in Mitchell, he was the son of George and Dorothy (Burgess) Vaught. He married Lucy Zigler on April 16, 1965; and she survives.

He was a graduate of Mitchell High School Class of 1963. Howard worked at Farm Bureau Co-op and Bedford Feed and Seed, where he retired from after 47 years. He was a member of Fairview Community Church and a member of the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association.

Howard enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and loved working out in his wood shop.

Surviving are his wife, Lucy of Bedford; two daughters, Stefanie (Don) Lambrecht of Bedford and Shawna (Brice) Conner of Heltonville; four grandchildren, Sarah (Craig) Morehead of Virginia, Schuyler Lambrecht of Bedford, and Blake Conner and Sawyer Conner, both of Heltonville; his twin brother, Harold Vaught, of Mitchell; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Milton Dean, Gerald Lee, Donald William, and Gordon Dee Vaught; and five sisters, Susan Phyllis Vaught, Winifred June Kern, Pauline Ruth Cox, Jeraline Bonnie Hopkins, and Sharon Kay Campbell.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Pastor Lindy Hopkins officiating.

Friends may call on Monday, from 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ann I. (Johnson) Conner

July 9, 1944 — April 28, 2016

Ann I. Conner, 71, of Seymour, with her family by her side, went home to be with her heavenly father at 5:18 a.m. on April 28, 2016.

Ann was born on July 9, 1944, in Hartford City, to Kenneth Carl and Ruby I. (Dollar) Johnson who are both deceased. Ann married Phillip D. Conner on Dec. 8, 1962, who survives in Seymour.

Ann graduated from Hartford City High School in 1962, was a greeter at Schneck Medical Center, cook for Seymour Community Schools, provided childcare in her home for many years and wrapped presents at Sears in Hartford City. She was presently a member of Tabernacle of Praise Church in Bedford, and held memberships at Cornerstone Community Church and First Church of the Nazarene in Seymour.

Ann was a dedicated wife, mother, thoughtful friend, prayer warrior, and enjoyed playing the organ, working in her flowers, and cooking.

Ann is survived by her husband of 53 years, Phil Conner; two children, Mike (Lisa) Conner of Seymour and Tonya (Donald JR) Wilson of Crothersville; five grandchildren, Amanda (Matt) Wade of Seymour, Amy (Kyle) Ferguson of North Vernon, Maverick Conner of Seymour, and Ashlee and Jesse Wilson, both of Crothersville; four great-grandchildren, Carly, Garrett, and Madeline Ann Ferguson, all of North Vernon, and Jensen Wade of Seymour; two brothers, Wayne Johnson of Seymour and Jim (Priscilla) Johnson of Hartford City.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Teresa Ann Conner, on Nov. 2, 2004.

Pastor Gary Thomas will conduct funeral services at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 2, at Tabernacle of Praise Church in Bedford.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 1, from 2-6 p.m. at Adams Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Crothersville, and Monday, May 2, from 10- 11 a.m. at Tabernacle of Praise Church in Bedford. Additional viewing at Pitman-Richman Funeral Home, 200 S. Hartford St., Eaton, IN 47338 from 11-11:30 a.m. with burial to follow on Tuesday, May 3, at noon at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Muncie.

Dec. 24, 1920 — April 28, 2016

 James Michael “Mike” Grange, 95, was born Dec. 24, 1920 to William Hugh Grange and Artie (Sprinkle) Grange of Lawrence County, Ill.

He graduated from Lawrenceville High School with the class of 1938. He also graduated from Vincennes University, Wilmington, Ohio College and Cincinnati Bible Seminary.

Mr. Grange taught in Lawrence County schools, he then served as a weather man in the US Air Force during World War II. For 62 years he served as a minister for churches in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan.

In 1941, Mr. Grange was married to Roberta Smith who preceded him in death in 1991. Together they had five children, William, of Lincoln, Neb., Mary Fay, of Toledo, Ohio, Christina, of Lansing, Mich., Robbie, of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Shelley, of Okemos, Mich. Mr. Grange leaves 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Grange was married to Dr. Linette Showerman in 1993. He also has two stepsons, Mark and Scott Miller. Mr. Grange also has one sister, Edith Rich of Lawrenceville, Ill.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 2, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Lee Brown and Frank Battaglia officiating. Burial will be in Vincennes, Indiana.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the service on Monday, May 2 at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Eva M. ‘Billie’ (Kern) Simpson

Jan. 31, 1926 — April 27, 2016

Eva M. “Billie” Simpson, age 90, of Springville passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, at 5:58 a.m. at her residence.

She was born on January 31, 1926, in Lawrence County, to William Emerson Kern and Helen (Spinks) Kern. Billie married Donald B. Simpson and he preceded her in death on June 11, 2003.

Billie was a 1944 graduate of Oolitic High School and previously worked at NWSC Crane and Camp Indi-Co-So, she volunteered extensively with many organizations including, Lawrence County 4-H, and the Pink Ladies at St. Vincent-Dunn Hospital, Lawrence County Museum, Altrussa Club, Home Ec Club, Farm Bureau and the Springville Heritage Festival.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol “Jolene” Fruits and husband David of Springville; one brother, Bill Kern of Bedford; four grandchildren, Debbie Rasnic of Greenwood, David (Trish) Rasnic of Attica, Don (Rhonda) Rasnic of New Haven, and Dewayne Rasnic of Texas; two nephews, Scott (Suzanne) Kern of Bloomington, and James (Rhonda) Kern of Manassas, Va.; great-nephews, Nathan Kern of Bloomington, Adam Kern and Alex Kern of Manassas, Va.; and great-niece, Abby Kern of Manassas, Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Private funeral services will be conducted at Cresthaven Funeral Home at her request; entombment will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens, Rev. David Ferry and Rev. Mark Hafenbreidel officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the White River Humane Society.

David Wayne Frost, 65, passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born July 13, 1950, in Salem, he was the son of John and Agnes (Bex) Frost. He was married to Rita Tillette.

David was a retired employee of the City of Mitchell with 40 years of service. He was a member of the Tabernacle of Grace.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Frost of Bedford; children, David Duncan of Bedford, Jason Bundy of Bedford, Lisa Bundy of Bedford, and Rachel Bundy of Bedford; six grandchildren and a great-grandson; and siblings, Ronnie Frost of Mitchell; Juanita Hattabaugh of Mitchell, Brenda Frost of Salem, and Larry Frost of Salem.

His parents; and siblings, John Frost Jr., Kenneth E. Frost, Marley L. Frost, Marilyn Alexander, Regina Smith, and Mark Frost, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with the Rev. Ronnie Frost Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Ina May (Blake) Feathers

April 1, 1937 — April 23, 2016

Ina May Feathers, 79, of Springville, passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born April 1, 1937, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Reno Blake and Eva (Clark) Blake. She married Johnny Feathers on May 1, 1992; and he survives.

She had worked at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Surviving are her husband, Johnny, of Springville; one son, Gary New; one stepson, John Feathers II; one stepdaughter, Kelly Harder; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joan Blake, Linda Sturgeon, and Juanita Morris; and one brother, Ronnie Blake.

She was preceded in death by parents; and one brother John Blake.

Funeral service will on Wednesday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Timothy Wayne McLaughlin, 50, of Bedford, was surrounded by his loving family when he was called home on April 21, 2016, at 7:45 p.m.

He leaves behind a wife, Shannon (Turpin) McLaughlin; son, Jarred McLaughlin; daughter, Tiffany Deckard (Donny McCart); three grandchildren, Tyson, Alicia and Cory; mother, Jean (Brewer) Sullivan and stepfather, Wendell; brother, Jody McLaughlin; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Thomas (Brenda) Turpin; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend, his dog Demo.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond McLaughlin and older brother Eugene Raymond McLaughlin.

The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Bloomington Hospital and special thanks to Dr. Cornetta.

Berlin D. Kinser, 63, of Bloomington passed away at Golden Living Center on Thursday, April 21, 2016.

Berlin was born in Bloomington on July 14, 1952, to the late Virgil and Thelma (Hillenburg) Kinser. He worked as a tree trimmer and at a saw mill. He also worked on the railroad, maintaining the rails. Berlin loved to travel and ride around the countryside visiting the horseman camps and stopping along the way to fish and hunt. He was an animal lover, especially his dogs. He was of the Pentecostal Faith.

Berlin is survived by his son, Eric Holtsclaw of Indianapolis; siblings, Shirley Fisher (Donnie) and Darrell Kinser of Bloomington, Janice Crouch of Gillette, WY, Danny Kinser and Louise Tipton (Darrell) of Bedford, Rosemary Kinser, Patty Treanor and Vanetta McDowell, all of Bloomington, Barbara Hardin of Bedford, Vicky Chambers (Randy) of Bloomington and Timmy Kinser (Donna) of Bedford; several nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Duard Prince.

Graveside funeral services will be held at Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg on Monday at 2 p.m. with Brother Mike Winters officiating. Mar. 19, 1970 — April 20, 2016

Jeffrey Michael “Jeff” Jean, 46, of Bloomington, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born March 19, 1970, in Bloomington, he was the son of Mike Jean and Terry Robertson.

Jeff was employed at Kirby Risk Electrical Supply for 25 years and he was a member of the Moose Lodge #1081 and the American Legion Post #18.

He was a loving husband, father, son and brother who enjoyed golfing and hunting. Jeff had a smile for everyone and never met a stranger, a friend to many, especially the weekend crew and the power couples.

Jeff was a dedicated member of the “Hardin’s Gang” at the Cascades Golf Course and he loved playing in the Jack and Jill League on Thursday evenings with his devoted wife, Kerri.

Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Kerri (Paquette) Jean, one daughter, Kelsey Oard (Mitch), his mother, Terry Robertson (Gary), all of Bloomington; his father, Mike Jean (Brenda) of Judah; one brother, Jason Jean of Bloomington; mother-in-law, Vickie VanMeter (John) of Bloomington; father-in-law, Don Paquette (JoEllen Kimmell) of Martinsville; step-grandmother, Mid Johnson of Bloomington; two stepbrothers, Chris Robertson of Bloomington and Jamie Meadows (Emilee) and one stepsister, Gena Maddox, of Bedford. Jeff is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, loving friends and his dogs, Beau and Lucy.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Glen and Elnora Deckard and Richard and Doris Jean.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2016, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., in Bloomington.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at The Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Duane Coffman officiating. Burial will follow at Knightridge Cemetery.

Donald Noel Livingston, age 76, of Bedford passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at 5 a.m. at his residence.

He was born in Monroe County on March 29, 1940, to Lloyd and Frances (Poole) Livingston; he was a graduate of Spencer High School. Donald married Aletha A. Livingston on Dec. 15, 1961, at the Salem Church and she survives.

Donald was retired part owner of Bedford Block and Concrete. He was a member of the Salem Separate Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Aletha A. Livingston; one son, Anthony (Becky) Livingston; one daughter, Pamela (Darren) Roberts; one brother, Lloyd (Wilma) Livingston Jr., and two grandsons, Gage and Gavin Livingston.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Vivian, Margaret, Alice and Martha.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 23, at noon at Cresthaven Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Norma (Phillips) Douglas

Rosemary Thomas Schulz, 92, of Bedford, passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016 at StoneBridge Health Campus, Bedford.

Born June 4, 1923, in Mason County, Ill., she was the daughter of Robert Lee Thomas and Allie Mae (Druin) Thomas. She married Vertus Schulz on Dec.18, 1945; he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1995.

She retired from North Lawrence Community Schools where she taught at Oolitic High School and Junior High. Rosemary received her bachelor’s from Illinois Normal (Teacher’s) College, which later became Illinois State University. She received her Master’s in Education from Indiana University.

She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Tri Kappa Associates, the Retired Teachers Association, and a volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Surviving are three sons, Marc Alan (Julie) Schulz of Albuquerque, N.M., Dr. Eric (Carol) Schulz of Bedford and Robert (Julia) Schulz of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Ann (James) Romanowsky of St. Cloud, Minn., and Kirsten (Rick) Hess of Martinsville; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Ruby and Margaret Jane.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be private.

Marjorie L. (Sheetz) Hall

Oct. 1, 1929 — April 19, 2016

Marjorie L. Hall, 86, of Williams, died at 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

Born Oct. 1, 1929, in Williams, she was the daughter of Fay and Ida (White) Sheetz. She married Russell Edward Hall in 1948 and he preceded her in death.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church in Williams and the Williams Home Extension Club.

Survivors include children, Carl D. Hall and wife Bobbie of Bedford, Debbie Brewer and husband Jackson of Orleans, Jon R. Hall and wife Diana of Bedford; nine grandchildren, Jeremy Brewer, Erica Pinnick, Reed Hall, Drew Hall, Ross Hall, Amy Ritchey, Joni Brown, Jamie Witt and Loray Lambton; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Robert D. Hall; a great-grandchild; and two sisters, Marie Fox and Ruth Sheetz.

Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 23 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Tom East officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, April 22 and from 9 a.m. until the hour of service on Saturday, April 23 at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Julie Kay Bolton, 53, of Bedford, passed away on Monday, April 18, 2016, at White River Lodge, Bedford.

Born Dec. 25, 1962, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Keith and Judy (Clark) Bolton.

She was a member of Donica Church of God. Julie loved gospel music and singing. She never met a stranger.

Surviving are her mother, Judy Bolton, of Bedford; one brother, Brian (Pam) Bolton of Mitchell; two nephews, Bryce (Meghan) Bolton of Bedford, and Brandon Bolton (Fiancé Elizabeth Kern) of Indianapolis; great aunt, Kay Wilson, of Greenwood; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Keith Bolton; grandparents, Durward and Fern Bolton and Lawrence and Theo Clark; two uncles, Terry Clark and Larry Clark; and aunt Cathy Clark.

Feb. 5, 1924 — April 17, 2016

Mary Katherine Mathews, 92, of Bedford, died at 12:04 p.m. on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at her son’s residence.

Born Feb. 5, 1924, in Fort Ritner, she was the daughter of Alva and Ella (Beavers) Hobson. She married Cladie A. Bailey on July 4, 1941; he was a Lt. Colonel, who was killed in action during World War II while serving in the Philippines on April 20, 1945. She then married Forrest W. Mathews Jan. 19, 1946; he died on July 2, 2009.

Mary Katherine was a graduate of Bedford High School, Class of 1941. She was a Registered Nurse at Dunn Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1991; and had previously worked at RCA, Bloomington. She was a 60-year member at First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School Teacher and Deaconess; and was a member of the Mitzi Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; son, Cladie A. Bailey; three sisters, Lois Boling, Mabel Elkins and Faye Keller; brother, Harley Hobson, daughter-in-law, Phyllis Bailey; and nephew, Robert Boling.

Rebecca Christine Ritchey, 85, of Bedford died at 2:33 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Nov. 11, 1930, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Elmer and Winnie (Strunk) Stigall. She married Paul Edward Ritchey on May 25, 1949, and he preceded her in death on June 11, 1996.

She was an inspector for the Casting Floor at General Motors retiring in 1988 after 24 years of service. When she was young, she was a Pentecostal evangelist for several years and a singer and musician. She attended New Hope Community Church and was a member of the UAW. She loved her family, friends and church.

Survivors include four sons: Paul David (Cindy) Ritchey of Loogootee, Claude (Janet) Ritchey and Gordon (Michelle) Ritchey all of Bedford, and Mark (Maria) Ritchey of Houston, Texas; one daughter: Madonna Gay (Doug) Martin of Ocala, Fla.; 13 grandchildren: Melinda (Tom) Edwards of Solsberry, Trent (Erin) Ritchey of Chapel Hill, N.C., Kristie (Joe) Strauser of Bedford, Jason (Kristin) Ritchey of Bloomington, Brian (Amy) Ritchey of Nashville, Tenn., Joni Ritchey of Nashville, Tenn., Erin McAlister of Maryland, Neil (Suzanna) Ritchey of New York, Evan Ritchey of New York, Isabella, Rebecca, and Matthew Ritchey all of Houston, Texas, David (Jessica) Martin of Bedford and Jared Martin of Charlotte, N.C.; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara (Lloyd) McFadden of Bedford, and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Marian Payton, 81, passed away Monday morning, April 18, 2016, at Mitchell Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born Jan. 29, 1935, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Ruth Helen (Gilson) Ramsey. She married Jerry Brotzman in 1957 and he preceded her in death in 1957. Her second marriage was to Morris Payton.

Marian attended Tulip Street Christian Church. She had worked in the cafeteria at Parkview Primary and Bedford Junior High School and was also employed M. Fine & Son.

Survivors include her children, Brian Payton of Bedford, Alan (Rita) Payton of Bedford, Rachelle Coleman of Martinsville, and Brent Scott (Lana) Payton of Mitchell; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Her parents; first husband; and brothers, Kenneth Ramsey and Charles Ramsey, preceded her in death.

Lana Kay Fultz Ingle, 69, went home to Heaven after a lengthy illness.

She was born Feb. 3, 1947, in Bedford, to Orin “Bud” and Lenora (Andis) Fultz. She married Donald Ingle who has been her rock for almost 33 years. Along with Don, she is survived by their children, Mark (Peggy) Ingle, Lori Ingle McDowell, Jeff (Barbara) Ingle, Cherie (Derek) Patton, and Chad (Kim) Robertson; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Lana graduated Fayetteville High School in 1965. She was an incredible cook and seamstress. She enjoyed all types of crafting especially with her grandchildren and she was an avid bird watcher and photographer. She volunteered many years at Spring Mill State Park.

Most of all she will always be remembered for her love of people, she never met a stranger and if you came into her home you were immediately a member of the family.

Roger Reynolds, age 62, of Mitchell passed away on Friday April 15, 2016 at 3 p.m. at his residence.

He was born in Bedford on Sept. 22, 1953, to Walter Earl Reynolds and Erma (Atchison) Pemberton.

Roger was a self employed carpenter, he was a 1971 graduate of Mitchell High School and a member of the Mitchell American Legion Post No. 250.

Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Erma and Cecil Pemberton of Bedford; two sons, Jeremy Reynolds and wife Stormi of Spencer and Jamison Reynolds and wife Robin of Spencer; three grandchildren, Jalene Reynolds, Mia Reynolds both of Spencer and Jacklyn Tolbert of Mitchell; two brothers, Bob Reynolds of Florida and Randy Reynolds of Mitchell; and one sister, Tammy Cox of Rochester.

Roger was preceded in death by his father and his grandparents.

Wanda L. Sciscoe, 80, formerly of Bloomington, passed away March 31, 2016, at her home in Oldsmar, Florida. She was born on March 9, 1936, in Bedford, Indiana.

Wanda spent the majority of her life in Bloomington, until her retirement to the sunshine state of Florida. Wanda was a member of Alpha Delta Omega sorority. She enjoyed golfing.

She married Hubert (Stoney) Lee Speer on Dec. 12, 1972; and he survives.

Born April 9, 1936, in Paoli, he was the son of Harry E. and Pauline (Huffines) Stroud. He married Lila Cooper and she preceded him in death April 8, 1992.

Donavon retired from Edwards Heating and Cooling. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and retired from the Army with 19 years of service. Donavon was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Survivors include his children, Jordan Stroud of Bedford and Doyle Stroud, Gary Stroud, Darla Stroud, Robert Stroud, Eric Stroud, Rhonda Stroud, Donnie Stroud and Matthew Stroud; stepdaughter, Ginger Purdy of Bedford; grandson, Etzio Stroud and several other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and siblings, Ronnie Stroud, Beverly Rushing, Terry Stroud, and Jerry Stroud, all of Louisville, Ky., and Teresa Watt of Georgetown.

His father; mother, Pauline Gollar; wife; daughter, Donna Ruth Stroud; and siblings, Phyllis Newlin and LaVern Newlin, preceded him in death.

Born Sept. 27, 1925, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of John and Opal (Huber) Vest. She married Ralph E. Erwin Aug. 3, 1947, and he preceded her in death Dec. 18, 2010.

JoAnn was a member of the First Baptist Church. She had been a teacher aide at Burris School and previously was employed at Reliance Manufacturing. JoAnn graduated from Orleans High School in 1943 and was a member of the Spring Mill Stitchers.

Survivors include her son, Eric R. (Lynn) Erwin of New Albany; daughter, Jeanie (J.D.) Woods of Warsaw; grandchildren, Patrick Woods of Warsaw, Mindy Woods of Warsaw, Robert Erwin of Indianapolis, Erin Neel of Louisville, Ky., and Kyle Erwin of New Albany; and sisters, Martha Ellis of Bloomington and Mary Lou Capshaw of Spencer.

Robert L. Redding

Sept. 25, 1936 — April 10, 2016

Robert L. Redding of Saginaw, Mich., formerly of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at HealthSource of Saginaw. He was 79 years old.

Robert Lynn Redding was born on Sept. 25, 1936, in Mitchell, to the late Irvie and Marquerite (Kendell) Redding. He married Norene “Beth” Hecht on June 1, 1967, in Albuquerque, N.M.; she survives him.

Bob graduated from Mitchell High School with the Class of 1954. After graduation, Bob attended college, but ultimately decided to spend 28 years in the United States Air Force. While honorably serving, he was a Systems Analyst, and traveled, but not exclusively, to California, England, Vietnam (Bronze Star), and Korea. After retiring from the USAF in 1980, he continued to work for the government as a Systems Analyst contractor in Atlanta, Ga., until his second retirement in 1998.

He enjoyed Notre Dame football and basketball — everything Notre Dame.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Beth; seven children, twins, Valerie and Daryl Redding, Cheryl (Les) Noel, Robyn Brandon, Robert Redding II, Lori Scharich, and Lee (Kathryn) Scharich; one brother, Troy D. Redding of Nashville, Tenn.; one sister, Anita Redding Brown of Nashville, Tenn.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Marvin “Babe” Redding.

Funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 15, 2016, at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter Road (off State). Rev. Ron L. Norris will officiate. Private burial will take place at a later date at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

She was a homemaker.

Jeff was a former employee of Essex and had been a school bus driver for nine years. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren.

Steven R. Williams, 73, of Bedford, died at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at IU Hospice House in Bloomington.

Born Feb. 11, 1943, in Heltonville, he was the son of Madge F. Williams. He married Oreta J. Overly on June 3, 1967, and she preceded him in death on May 30, 2002. He later married Polly June and she survives.

He was a graduate of Heltonville High School.

He retired as a millwright maintenance worker for General Motors after 37 years of service.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War and a member of the Burgoon Baptist Church, VFW and UAW Local No. 440.

Survivors include his wife, Polly, of Bedford and her children: a son, Kevin Williams of Bedford; a daughter, Julie Pinell and husband, Matthew of San Marcos, Calif.; four grandchildren, Kayla Glenn and husband Chad, Jessica Pinell, Demara Williams and Sonya Gould; two great-grandchildren, Keeley and Lillian Glenn.

He was preceded in death by his mother and first wife, Oreta.

Darrel Yates, 82, of Mitchell passed away at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at Garden Villa in Bedford.

He was born in Ewing, Va., on Nov. 23, 1933, to Roland and Laura (Hatfield) Yates. He was retired owner of Yates Construction and Persimmon Park Apartments. He was a member of the Bedford Boat Club, Mitchell American Legion Post No. 250 and Mitchell VFW Post No. 107.

Survivors include his daughter, Debbie (Donnie) Zollman; son, Darrel Yates Jr.; and grandchildren, Alexis Zollman and Alannah Zollman.

Darrel was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Chester Yates, Henry Smith, Charlie Wilson and Harry Wilson; and two sisters, Hazel Cheek and Ida “Bea” Cheek.

Darrel was a loving dad, father-in-law, “Papoo,” and friend. He was a proud, giving, and forgiving man who often wore a smile. He enjoyed many years of spending time with his friends and donating his time and abilities to help others. He also enjoyed the privacy of his own home and the nature surrounding it. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Mildred R. Reynolds, 88, of Mitchell, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at 5:45 a.m., at IU Health Bedford.

She was born Dec. 2, 1927, in Mitchell, the daughter of George W. and Nellie (Love) Bush. She married George Thomas Reynolds and he preceded her in death.

She was employed at Trav-Ler and Cortron in Orleans for several years and maintained the former First National Bank, until her retirement. Ruth was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church. She also was a member of Mitchell Senior Citizens Club.

She is survived by one son, Adrian Pridemore of Mitchell; one granddaughter, Samantha Nier of Mitchell, and one sister, Marcia Pruett of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George T. Reynolds; parents; one son, Dennis Joe Pridemore; one granddaughter, Sherry Lynn Pridemore; one sister, Ada Brown, and one brother, Donald M. Bush.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Pastor David Conley officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery.

Cynthia Annice Reynolds, 79, Medora, died Saturday, April 9, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour.

She was born Jan. 25, 1937, in Bedford, the daughter of the late Hugh W. (Peck) Bobbitt and Bernice M. Troy Bobbitt. She was married on Aug. 1, 1955, in Crown Point, to Robert L. (Bob) Reynolds and he survives.

She was a graduate of Clearspring High School in 1955.

She retired from ITT Plastics of Medora in 1986.

She was a member of the Medora Wesleyan Church, a member of the Order of Eastern Star Leesville, and was President of the Medora Town Board from 2013 to 2014.

She loved to do crossword puzzles, crocheting, cooking and housekeeping, organizing family gatherings, and entertaining her grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons, Randal D. (Gayna) Reynolds of Vallonia, Robert B. (Kim) Reynolds of Portageville, Mo., and Richard K. Reynolds of Medora; two daughters, Bernice George of Medora and Mardeana “Helen” Reynolds of Paris Crossing; nine grandchildren, Sarah Dunkle, Emily Riggs, Adam Reynolds, David Reynolds, Shawna Gray, Leslie Ault, Craig Bell, Christopher Reynolds and Jacob Reynolds; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother: Charles Bobbitt of Seymour; and one sister, Kathleen Anderson of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one grandchild, Matthew Reynolds; three brothers, Delbert Rodenberger, James Rodenberger and William Bobbitt, and one sister, Lois Douglas.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Medora Wesleyan Church, with Pastor Skip Breeden and Pastor Chuck Morgan officiating. Burial will be in White River Valley Cemetery in Medora.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at Hague Funeral Home, in Medora and from 11 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the church.

Eastern Star service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, at Hague Funeral Home in Medora.

Richard F. “Dick” Crowe, 89, of Bloomington, passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2016, at his residence with his family by his side.

Dick was born Nov. 2, 1926 in Bedford, Indiana, and was the son of the late Ferrell Carter and Margaret Anita (Torphy) Crowe. Dick graduated from Bloomington High School in 1945. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as a Staff Sergeant in World War II. Dick worked as an Electrician and was the first Electrician at Otis Elevator. He was a Union Electrician with GM in Bedford and retired from Westinghouse after 23 years. He had also served as Fire Chief in Ellettsville. He attended St. John The Apostle Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Rebecca “Becky” Crowe; three children, Nancy Beckett of Bloomington, Mike Crowe (Gail) of McDonough, Georgia, and Joseph Crowe (Vicky) of Bloomington; one grandson, David Crowe of Avon, Indiana; two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Devin Crowe; and three stepchildren, Brian Love (Darla) of Savannah, Georgia, Brent Love of Mitchell, Indiana, and Michelle McGarvey (Rick) of Bloomington. Also surviving are eight step-grandchildren, Kristy Begley, Cory Love, Jessica Love, Rachel Love, Mitchell Love, Michael Love, Brice McGarvey and Anne Marie McGarvey; and two step-great-grandchildren, Blake and Audrey Begley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Crowe; and sister, Mary Stauch.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2016, at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., Bloomington. Burial will follow the service at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Robert E. “Bob” Perry, 85, of Bloomington, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Oct. 2, 1930, in Oolitic, Indiana, he was the son of the late John B. and Rose Ellen (Taylor) Perry. Bob was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ellettsville for 58 years. He also served as a Deacon and a Trustee for the church. He was employed at Fleetwood Plumbing and Heating for 37 years and a member of Locals #515 and #136 Plumbers and Steamfitters for 57 years. Bob served in the United States Army, serving in Germany during the Korean War.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, Bob enjoyed fishing, gardening, mushroom hunting and watching Indiana University sports. But mostly he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Margaret (Baugh) Perry; two sons, Randy Perry (Kathy) of Bloomington and Roger Perry (Kathy) of Spencer; one daughter, Regina Kinser (Mark) of Bloomington; grandchildren, Erin Ainsworth (Bob), Josh Kinser (Kiley), Laura Minnick (Levi), Kylie Kinser and Lacey Hooie (Nick); great-grandchildren, Brianna, Noah, Maci, Griffin, Simon, Treyton, Landon, Bailey, Laryn, McKenna and Camden; and several nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by five brothers, Bill, Ed, Denver, Otis and Alex Perry, and two sisters, Marie Rogers and Irene Hendry.

He graduated from Bedford High School in 1950, and was a past Exalted Ruler of the Order of the Elks Lodge, past president of Jaycees, and volunteered as “the ice cream man” at Mitchell Manor. He was a member of the First Church of God, Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM, and La-Or-Ma Shrine Club. Walter was a veteran of the Indiana National Guard. Larry David Chastain, 75, passed away Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at Mitchell Manor.

Born June 8, 1940, in Mitchell, he was the son of Charles Everett and Ethel Marie (Reynolds) Chastain. He married Rebecca D. Tomlinson Aug. 30, 1969, and she preceded him in death Jan. 21, 1999.

Larry was a former employee of Fitch Chevrolet, Pearcy Chevrolet, and retired from Burton Pontiac. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1958, and was a member of Woodville Baptist Church and Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM.

He served 16 years on the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department.

Larry was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War Era and a member of American Legion Post No. 250.

Survivors include his sons, Christopher Dean Chastain of Mitchell and Matthew David Chastain of Lebanon; five grandchildren; and brothers, Morris “Butch” Chastain of Mitchell and Charles “Chocky” Chastain of Mitchell.

His parents and wife preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 9, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Morris “Butch” Chastain officiating. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Following cremation, a private burial will be at a later date in Mitchell Cemetery.

Born May 22, 1942, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter Charles Robert and Erma Mae (Jones) Prince. She married Chester “Chuck” Tolliver on June 20, 1973, and he survives.

Joyce attended Bedford High School.

She retired from RCA in Bloomington, IN.

Doris A. Phillips Harris, 80, of Springville, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus at 4 a.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at her residence following a four-year battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 16, 1935, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Bennie and Ethel Marie (Smith) Flynn. She married Carlis Phillips on Dec. 31, 1954, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 24, 1972.

She retired after 18 years as a sergeant from the Lawrence County Police Department. She enjoyed cooking and crocheting for her family and friends, and being a recliner coach for IU basketball. She enjoyed attending church with her family and friends.

Survivors include a daughter, Marsha (Mike) Eads of Springville; a nephew who was like a son, Dean Flynn; three grandchildren, Carla Hettle and fiancé Matthew Roberts, Sarah (Wes) Stroud of Bedford, Matthew Phillips of Heltonville; a daughter-in-law, Fay Phillips of Heltonville; three great-grandchildren, Kyeirah Phillips, Kaden Phillips and Krimsin Strong; three sisters, Delores (Homer) Phillips, Mary (Bob) Phillips and Donna Elayne (Steve) Kimmel, all of Springville; two brothers, Kenneth F. (Bea) Flynn of Solsberry and Monte Dwayne (Diana) Flynn of Springville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Walter F. Bower, 81, of Mitchell passed away at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at his residence.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1934, to Russell John Bower and Rachel (Huffinger) Bower in Warsaw, Ohio. He married Virginia (Herndon) Bower on June 8, 1963, and she preceded him in death.

Walter was a brick mason and retired from GM Powertrain in Bedford. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local No. 440. He was a big NASCAR fan, and Jeff Gordon fan. He was a hard-working stand up man, and a loving father and husband.

Survivors include his son, Louis “Corkey” Jones of Bedford; and his sister Virginia Oakley of Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents: wife: brother, Louie Bower; and sister, Helen Garr.

In loving memory of Batool “Battina” Borhan. She was the loving wife of Dr. Mike Borhan of 55 years. She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Battina was full of generosity and was a friend to anybody that she met. Her kindness is an attribute to the beauty of her heart and soul. Her inspiring presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Battina’s desire for philanthropy and generosity was unparalleled. She strived to improve the lives of those less fortunate. Her smile, style, class and demeanor captivated all those around her. Battina was an avid art, music and nature lover for many years. Battina was a natural hostess. She entertained the likes of senators, governors, doctors and nurses. She respected and treated the staff at Dunn Memorial and Bedford Regional hospitals as though they were part of our family.

Battina was preceded in death by her father, Mohammed, and mother, Robab. Battina is survived by her husband, Dr. Mike Borhan; daughter, Soheila Boyer; and sons, Dr. Arrange Borhan, Kameran Borhan and Arshan Borhan. She had four grandchildren, Brianna Borhan, Bradon Borhan, Arianna Borhan and Aliyeh Boyer. She has four loving sisters, Maheen, Ashey, Nasreen and Roghayeh, and two brothers, Houshang and Hosein. We are all saddened by the loss of such an amazing mother, wife, sister and friend.

Inez Louisa McDonald, 96, of Bedford, died peacefully at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Johnson Christian Village, Bedford, with her loving family at her side.

Born Jan. 19, 1920, in Loogootee, she was the daughter of Gus Arvin and Nora (Graves) Arvin. She married Leo H. McDonald on Sept. 11, 1941; he preceded her in death on Nov. 11, 1991.

She was a homemaker; a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford, for 58 years; a charter member of the Daughters of Isabella, No. 697, of St. John’s Catholic Church, Loogootee; a charter member of the Lawrence County Organ Club; a member of the Bedford Regional Medical Center (now IU Health) Auxiliary (Yellow Jackets) and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church Caring Committee.

Inez loved meeting people and making new friends. Her wonderful smile and sense of humor brought joy to everyone that knew her. Her love for God and her family was evident in her daily life. When you saw Inez, you also saw her rosary dangling from her hand. She was never without it. This special lady will be missed every day by her loving family, but we are celebrating her eternal life in Heaven, and being reunited with the love of her life!

Joan G. Cramer, 79, longtime resident of Bedford, passed away at 4:42 p.m. at IU Bloomington Hospital on Thursday March 31, 2016.

Joan is the daughter of Ralph and Bernie Jamison, she married Joseph Sego on Aug. 13, 1955, and he survives. Joan worked at the Indiana Gas Company for many years and presently worked at Priceless IGA in Bedford, she was a joy to everyone she met.

Survivors include Joseph Sego of Bedford, three siblings, Ivan Jamison, Judith A. Hawkins and Lynne Jamison, two daughters, Cathy Garfola and husband Tim, Marsha Anderson, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Evelyn (Heminger) Hirsch

June 20, 1920 — March 26, 2016

Evelyn Hirsch, 95, longtime Lawrence county resident, died Saturday, March 26, 2016, at her home in Stillwater, Okla. Evelyn lived in Lawrence County from 1950-1982 and together with her husband, Edward, who preceded her in death, had opened Ed’s Ghost Town on U.S. 50, 12 miles west of Bedford.

Evelyn was born to Arthur and Aleta Amos Heminger on June 3, 1920, and grew up near Bradner, Ohio, She was a graduate of Bowling Green State University and moved to Indianapolis after graduation and pursued a post graduate degree working in the Medical Technical field. She met Edward in 1950 and they were married a month later. The couple enjoyed 56 happy years together as Edward passed away in 2006.

Together Edward and Evelyn raised 4 boys, all graduates of Mitchell High School: Arthur lives in Florence, Ala., Mike and Paul, who both live in Stillwater, Okla., and Joe is in Twenty-nine Palms, Calif. Evelyn is also survived and missed by her nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She also survived by her sister Rebecca who lives in West Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Sue; and an infant sibling.

Pastor James H. “Jim” Woodward, age 91, of Germantown, Ohio, passed away, Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at the Otterbein Retirement Community.

He was born in Bedford, on June 16, 1924, to the late Walter W. and Pauline E. (Lambrecht) Woodward.

Jim was an ordained minister for the Church of God with more than 60 years of service — serving in Huron and Terre Haute, the Home Missions for the Cherokee in Tahlequah, Okla. and in St. Louis, Mo. He was also a school teacher and an administrator serving as Director of Welfare for the State of Indiana.

Jim was a member of the Germantown First Church of God.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Doris N. (Pendleton) Woodward; and his sister, Betty Woodward.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Pastor Tim and Sue Woodward of Germantown, Ohio and David and Patty Woodward of Marengo, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; his brother, Ray Woodward of Bloomington; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Visitation will be held 2-6 p.m., Sunday, April 3, at Dalton Funeral Home, Corner of State Route 4 and Weaver Rd., Germantown. There will be an additional visitation 9-10 a.m., Monday at the First Church of God, 760 Farmersville Pike, Germantown; where the funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m., with Pastor Paul Dreger officiating.

In lieu of flowers the Woodward family requests that you do something special for an older person or shut in or donate to the Missions of the First Church of God, Germantown, Ohio.
