Noel – Ralph Noel of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 26, 2006, at the Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford. Born on April 10, 1928, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Hobart and Lola (Cooper) Noel. He married Bernice Kirkman Butcher on May 13, 1986, and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Patricia Ann Buker; one step-son, Dennis Godsey of Springville, IN; two step-daughters: Patricia Super of Bedford, IN, and Beverly Keister of Martinsville, IN; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Donald and Delmar Noel; and two sisters: Mary Catherine Cox and Margaret Early. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army during World War II. He was retired from Central Foundry in Bedford. He was a member of the U.A.W. Local #440 and the Grace Baptist Church in Springville, IN. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2006, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford, IN, with Reverend Robert Phillips officiating. She married Donald O. Walls on September 17, 1957, and he survives. Also surviving are three daughters: Rhea Dawn Sons and husband, Steve, of Mitchell, IN, Rhonda Walls of Mitchell, IN, and Ranae Sanders and husband, Andy, of Bedford, IN; one brother, Kenneth Shafer and wife, Brenda, of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Iva Radcliff of Paoli, IN; one granddaughter, Stephanie Nicole Sons of Mitchell, IN; one great-grandson, Caden Dale Eli of Mitchell, IN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father, Alva Bill Whitney; one brother, Gerald Shafer; one great-nephew, Tyler Shafer; and several aunts and uncles. She was a homemaker. Corwin – Richard G. Corwin, Sr., of Beford, IN, died Sunday, December 24, 2006, at the Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington, IN. Born on October 29, 1918, he was the son of Norman and Ethel Corwin. Surviving are one son, Richard Corwin, Jr., and three grandchildren. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army during World War II. He was a retired postal worker and a member of the American Legion Post in Salem, IN. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursay, December 28, 2006, at the Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford, IN, with Johnny Johnson officiating. Mann – Darla Kay Mann of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 23, 2006, at the Hospitality House in Bedford. Born on April 23, 1973, in Astabulla, OH, she was the daughter of Carl and Sandra (Mienke) Mann. Surviving are her father, Carl Mann and step-mother, Shirolet, of Bedford, IN; one sister, Carla Mann of Bloomington, IN; one brother, Robert Mann and wife, Dawn of Fort Wayne, IN; one step-sister, Kim Bridges and husband, Delbert, of Leesville, IN; one step-brother, Michael Kinser and wife, Katie, of Springville, IN; ten nieces and nephews; several aunts and uncles; and step-grandparents, Donald and Shirley Burch of Buddha. She was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents. Baker – Lorna B. Baker of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 22, 2006, at the Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford, IN. Born on June 10, 1913, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of John and Sarah (Johnson) Webster. She married William "Kenneth" Baker on February 2, 1934, an he preceded her in death on July 6, 1992. Surviving are one son, Delbert "Deb" Baker and wife, Connie, of Bedford, IN; three daughters: Phyllis Barlow and husband, George, of Oolitic, IN, Carolyn Melton and husband, Paul, of Mitchell, IN, and Janet Jones and husband, Ted, of Albany, OH; fourteen grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, twenty-seven great-granchildren, seventeen step-great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Arnold Webster; two sisters: Minnie Bennett and Mary Gee; two grandchilren and one great-grandson. She was a seamstress, serving for thirty-five years at M.F. Fines and Sons in Bedford, IN. She was a member of the Midtown Church of Christ in Bedford. Baker – Patricia L. (Dorsett) Baker of Williams, IN, died Thursday, December 21, 2006, at her residence. Born on January 21, 1936, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Louis E. and Gladys (Hendricks) Dorsett. Surviving are one son, Donald E. Baker and wife, Kathy, of Palm Bay, FL; one daughter, Kelleen R. Wilburn and husband, Tom, of Elkhart, IN; one brother, Carl "Sonny" Dorsett and wife, Hope, of French Lick, IN; four sisters: Helen Bauman and husband, David, of Mishawaka, IN, Hazel Thurmon of Georgia, Linda Bovee of Stroh, IN, and Judy Frenzel and husband, John, of San Diego, CA; one brother-in-law, Jim Widuch, of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren: Todd Baker and Chris, Leah and Misty Goodwin; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Peggy Widuch. She was a homemaker. A memorial service will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Chastain Funeral Home in Mitchell, IN, is in charge of the arrangements. Sweigart – Reverend William F. "Pastor Bill" Sweigart of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, December 21, 2006, at his residence. Born on September 16, 1929, in Henry County, IN, he was the son of William F. and Elizabeth (Hickman) Sweigart. He first married Joan Kalis, and she preceded him in death. He later married Donna B. Dalton on August 16, 1992, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons: Fredrick Eugene Sweigart and wife, Peggy Rose, of Anderson, IN, and Anthony Wayne Sweigart and wife, Deborah, of Baton Rouge, LA; one brother, Pastor Ron Sweigart and wife, Barbara. of Hagerstown, IN; two sisters: Freida Turner and Jody Burk, both of New Castle, IN; four grandchildren: Holly Bpgausch and husband, Fritz, Christa Sweigart and Casey Sweigart, all of Floria, and Aaron Sweigart and wife, Sarah, of Michigan; and four great-grandchilren: Kristen, Collin and Caitlyn Slack, and Jade Madison Bogausch. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers: Christian, Fred, Dale and John Sweigart; and four sisters: Maxine, Grace, Agnes and Patsy. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and also served in German. He had owned and operated the Redwood Restaurant in New Castle, IN, and had also worked for Jim Logston as an automobile supply salesman in southern Indiana. During his twenty-nine years in the ministry, he served Methodist churches in Milford, IN Whitewater-Middleboro, IN, Glen-New Salem, Mitchell, Trinity United Methodist Church in Oakland City, IN, and retired in 2000. He then served the Mitchell Presbyterian Church as interim minister. In June of 2001, he began his ministry at Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church in French Lick, IN, and served there until April of 2006. He was a member of the Southern Indiana United Methodist Church Conference. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 24, 2006, in the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church in Mitchell, IN, with Reverend Doctor Kenneth R. Burcham and Reverend Robert L. Ostermeier officiating. Burial will be in the Mitchell Cemetery. Kern – Jim Kern of Bedford, IN, died on Wednesday, December 20, 2006, at his residence. Born on January 31, 1928, in Fayetteville, IN, he was the son of Roy and Bess (Myers) Kern. He married Rosemary Lytton in August, 1947, and she preceded him in death. Surviving are one son, L.C. Kern and wife, Linda, of Seattle, WA; one daughter, Kitty Waren and husband, Jay, of Georgetown, TX; three granddaughters: Kristen in Portland, OR, Megann of Seattle, WA, and Katie of Las Vegas, NV; three grandsons: Alex in Seattle, WA, Clint and Spencer James of Las Vegas, NV; one great-granddaughter, Hailey Kathryn of Las Vegas, NV. He was a veteran serving in the United States Navy during World War II. He retired as a teacher with the North Lawrence Community Schools in 1989. He taught math for many years at Bedford Middle School. Before that, he taught at Lincoln Elementary. He graduated from Indiana University with a B.S., M.S., and Ed.S. in Education. He was the principal of Fayetteville School from 1965 until 1971. He was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 826, Masonic Lodge F. & A.M. No. 14, the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Phi Delta Kappa education honorary society. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2006, at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford, IN, with Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Brown – Lela E. Brown of Orleans, IN, died Tuesday, December 19, 2006, at the Paoli Health and Living Community. Born on May 2, 1914, in Washington County, IN, she was the daughter of Willis C. and Rose (Wheeler) Lawyer. She married Carl H. Brown on September 3, 1973, and he preceded her in death on January 16, 2000. Surviving are one of her triplet sisters, Leta A. Myers of Orleans, IN, and another sister, Laura Keister of California. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters: Maude Boisen and Lena Hurst (triplet sister); and one brother, Lawrence Lawyer. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Mount Carmel Christian Church. Surviving are her mother and step-father, Maudean Inman and husband, James, of Bedford, IN; three sons: David Smith and wife, Lili, of California, Sam Smith and wife, Linda, of Tennessee, and Ralph Cooper and wife, Shauna of California; two daughters: Lori Scheiderer and husband, John, of Washington state, and Tammy Buhl and husband, Dave, of North Carolina; five sisters: Melissa Myers of Louisianna, Kim Bravo of Florida, Pat Richmond of Indianapolis, IN, Sandra Vasquez of California, and Jean Correll of Illinois; three brothers: Walter Dugger of Orleans, IN, Gary Dugger of Tennessee, and James Inman of Bedford, IN; nineteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, one sister, Eva Eversole, and one brother, J.C. Dugger. She was a nurse's aide for many years, including ten years at the Bedford Hospitality House and several years at the Lodi Health Care Center in Lodi, CA. She attended Tallula Public Schools in Tallula, IL. She attended the Bedford Wesleyan Church. Piper – Enid Piper of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 18, 2006, at her residence. Born on June 19, 1909, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Grover and Ina (Martin) Chastain. She married Glenn Piper on August 17, 1929, and he preceded her in death on January 16, 1997. Surviving are one daughter, Jeannine Piper of Bedford, IN; one son, Jerry Glen Piper and wife, Nancy, of Bedford, IN; one brother, Elmo Chastain; one sister, Roberta Baker of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren: Vicki Seroussi of Connecticut, Jeffrey Piper of California, and Alison Piper of Bedford, IN; three step-grandchildren: Tally Melvin, Chad Lessig and LaVerne "Butch" Lessig, all of Bedford, IN; eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Ramsey – Kim David Ramsey of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 17, 2006, at his residence. Born on June 8, 1957, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Charles Ramsey and Janis (Sherrill) Patrick. Surviving are his father, Charles Ramsey, and his mother, Janis Patrick, both of Bedford, IN; two brothers: Kirk and Kevin Ramsey, both of Bedford, IN; and two sisters: Kelly Benton ad Karla Ramsey, both of Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by his son, Aaron Martin, and one sister, Kristy Ramsey. He was a former employee of Frito-Lay, Inc. in Dallas, TX. There will be no service. The body will be cremated. Acton – Thomas E. Acton of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 16, 2006, at the Westview Nursing Home. Born on August 14, 1920, he was the son of Edgar C. and Alice (Hall) Acton. He married Virginia Morrison and she preceded him in death on September 15, 1968. He later married Mary Frances Dorsett Little and she survives. Also surviving are one son, Dr. Michael Acton of Indianapolis, IN; one daughter, Rebecca Snapp of Bedford, IN; one brother, Charles Acton of Aiken, SC; two sisters: Margie Stone of Fort Myers, FL, and Marilyn Guthrie of Bradenton, FL; four grandchildren: Dr. Bryan Acton and wife, Lara, of Indianapolis, IN, Clayton Acton and wife, Sharon, of Philadelphia, PA, Ryan Snapp of Bedford, IN, and Erin Snapp Lish and husband, Jacob, of Ellettsville, IN; and one great-grandchild, Aidan Matthew Acton. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army during World War II. He joined the military in 1942 and served as a Field Artilleryman for the 86th Infantry Division during World War II. He was stationed in fourteen different Army installations, in nineteen different states. He was in active combat in France, Belgium, German and Austria during World War II. After the war, he served a tour of duty in the Philippine Islands. Following active duty, he was active in both the Indiana National Guard and the Army Reserve, where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and head of the Army Reserve Unit in Bloomington, IN. He worked for Indiana Limestone for his entire life, retiring as credit and transportation manager in 1985. He was a member of the Bedford Christian Church, Bedford Masonic Lodge, High Twelve Club of Bonita Springs and the American Legion. A private family service will be held with Dr. Dennis Turner officiating. Burial will be at the Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be considered in the name of Tom Acton to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers. Born on December 15, 1928, in Washington County, IN, she was the daughter of Gilbert and Mabel (Voyles) Gould. She married Richard E. Smedley and he preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters: Penny Buis and husband, Bill, of Salem, IN, and Pamela Murphy and husband, Ron, of Mitchell, IN; three brothers: Richard and Tommy Gould, both of Shelbyville, IN, and Tommy Gould of Alabama; four grandchildren: Shane and Jeremy Buis, Corey Murphy and Jessica Thompson; and three great-grandchildren: Karlie and Jeffery Dean Buis and Evan Murphy. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a homemaker and self-employed. She was a member of the American Legion Post No. 250 Auxiliary and Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107 Auxiliary. Mann – John H. Mann of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, December 14, 2006, at the Mitchell Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mitchell. Born on April 30, 1920, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Charley and May (Jones) Mann. He married Maudie E. Grunden on March 18, 1944, and she preceded him in death on December 1, 2002. Surviving are two sons: Charley P. Mann of Howell, NJ, and Rodney D. Mann of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Patty Thoms of Mitchell, IN; one sister, seventeen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, and one grandson, Benjamin "Joe" Thoms. He was a veteran serving in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II. He had worked for Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell. He retired as a stage hand at the Indiana University Auditorium in Bloomington, IN. He also repaired televisions at his home in Mitchell. He was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 in Bedford, IN, and the local union No. 618 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Machine Operators. He was a member of the Bryantsville Church of Christ. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 19, 2006, at the Ferguson-Lee Inc., Haverly Chapel in Mitchell, IN. She married Earl Eugene Cooper on June 5, 1948, in Bedford, IN, and he preceded her in death on October 25, 1986. Coleman – Hazel F. Coleman of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at her residence. Born on June 17, 1929, in Greene County, IN, she was the daughter of Robert and Delphia (Holland) Jackson. She married James Coleman on June 16, 1951, and he preceded her in death on August 14, 1993. Surviving are one son, Andy Coleman of Bedford, IN, and one granddaughter, Abbi Coleman of Bedford, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was employed at General Motors for forty years. She was involved with the White River Humane Society. In return for her dedication, the White River Humane Society named an award in her honor. The Coleman Award is given annually in her honor. He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #136 for fifty-eight years and a lifetime member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsmans Club. The Indiana University School of Art is teaching a folkart class in his name. He has many items on display at the Lawrence County History Museum. Born on February 8, 1932, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Clyde Earnest and Essie Elizabeth (Hoar) Hutchinson. He married Norma Jean Turner on February 13, 1954, and she survives. He was a Thornton Memorial Boys Club volunteer for more than thirty-five years, having coached and officiated most of the club's basketball, football and softball programs. He was a long-time member and former-president of the Boys Club Board of Directors. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bedford, IN, and had also attended the Valley Mission Church of Nazarene. He was a charter member of the Little Theatre in Bedford, IN, and appeared in numerous productions. He was a member of the American Diabetes Association and the former Bedford Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a manager of the 7-Up Bottling Company's Bedford operations. He retired as manager of the paint department at George's Gateway in Bedford in 1991. DeVoss – Betty (Fultz) DeVoss of Gosport, IN, died Sunday, December 3, 2006, at the Gosport Nursing Home. Born on January 2, 1923, she was the daughter of Raymond and Thelma (Fiscus) Turner. She married Joseph DeVoss on April 5, 1942, and he preceded her in death in 1993. Surviving are one daughter, Shelia DeVoss of Indianapolis, IN; and one son, Joseph S. DeVoss of Chicago, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Juanita Jennings. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bedford, IN. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at the Green Hill Cemetery in Bedford, IN. No calling hours are scheduled. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford. Merrill – Rose Lee Merrill of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 3, 2006, at the StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford. Born on April 29, 1936, in Chicago, IL, she was the daughter of Charles F. Merrill and Dallas Thomas. Surviving are her step-father, Harold Thomas of Indianapolis, IN. She was retired from Buger King, where she had worked as a hostess. She was a member of the Dive Christian Church. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at the Dive Christian Church with Reverend Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Dive Cemetery. Mitchell of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 3, 2006, at the StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford. Born on November 28, 1930, in Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of David and Inez (Lewis) Miller. She married Robert M. Mitchell on October 16, 1949, and he survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Connie Diaz and husband, Walt, of Indianapolis, IN; one sister, Mary Stewart of Springville, IN; one grandson, Mitch Diaz; three step-grandchildren: Tammy Hart, Sara Diaz and Andrew Diaz; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Marie Bingham. She had worked in the Recorder's Office for Betty Edwards, the Auditor's Office for Bob Adamson, the City Clerk's Office for Pauline Craig and as office manager for Mayor John Williams for sixteen years. She was active in the Republican Party and the Women's Business Association. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2006, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Brother Stan Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery. Webb – Yvonne Betty Marie Webb of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 3, 2006, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center in Bedford. Born on June 23, 1925, in Aldershot, England, she was the daughter of Frederick Stephen and Maria Almalia (Schmit) Hamman. She married Gordon Baker Webb on March 3, 1945, and he survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Penny Sowders and husband, Lovell, Jr., of Bedford, IN; one son, Brian Webb and wife, Jill, of Mitchell, IN; five grandchildren: Michelle Zenow and husband, Keith, Gretchen Gebhard and husband, Terry, of Indianapolis, IN, Kyle Smith and wife, Amy, of Bedford, IN, Chad Smith and wife, Missy, of Greenwood, IN, and Jeanna Small and husband, Corey, of Indianapolis, IN; five great-grandchildren: Hannah Smith, Cameron Smith, Dylan Smith, Zachary Haltom and Nicholas Haltom. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Sulvia Hamman Lee. She was a homemaker. She was a member of the St. John's Episcopal Church for over sixty years. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2006, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford, IN, with Father Charles Carpenter officiating. Hardwick – Vestal "Butch" Hardwick of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 1, 2006, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center in Bedford. Born on September 3, 1943, he was the son of Manuel and Kathleen (King) Hardwick. He married Sharon Goodman on September 22, 1961, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons: Kevin Hardwick and wife, Joyce, of Springville, IN, and Troy Hardwick and wife, Jill, of Terre Haute, IN; one brother, Dencil Hardwick and wife, Janice, of Danville, IN; one sister, Carolyn Muir and husband, Sidney, of Tennessee; one granddaughter, Amber Hardwick of Terre Haute, IN; two step-grandchildren: Kendra Wilkins and husband, Jan, of Springville, IN, and Kyle Sneed of Mitchell, IN; and four step-great-grandchildren: Michael, Rachael and Danielle Wilkins, all of Springville, IN, and Karl Sneed of Mitchell, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Estel, in infancy, and Wilford Hardwick. He had worked at RCA and General Electric in Bloomington, IN, and at Carpenter Body Works in Mitchell, IN. He was of the protestant faith. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2006, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary in Bedford, IN, with Reverend Lewis Williams and Reverend Don Phillips officiating. Payton – Evelyn Ruth Payton of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, December 1, 2006, at her residence. Born on August 23, 1937, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Roy and Wanda (Compton) McNeely. She married Mervin Leon Payton on August 21, 1951, at the old Holiness Church in Mitchell, IN, and he survives. Also surviving are three daughters: Myra King and husband, Bradley, of Sheboygan, WI, Debra Neideffer and husband, Jim, of Loogootee, IN, and Sheryl Grow and husband, Kevin, of Columbus, IN; her mother, Wanta McNeely of Mitchell, IN; three sisters: Marianne Luttrell and Judy Allen, both of Mitchell, IN, and Sharon Downham of Bedford, IN; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, Roy McNeely, and her brother, John McNeely. She was employed at the former Just Kids Daycare in Bedford, IN. She was the owner/operator of the former Dairy Bell Drive-In in Mitchell, IN. She was a member of the Bride of Christ Fellowship in Mitchell. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 3, 2006, at the Ferguson-Lee Inc., Haverly Chapel in Mitchell, IN, with the Reverend Jerry Allen officiating.
