12/31/00

Christie – John H. Christie of Madison, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, December 31, 2000, at his residence. Born on January 24, 1956, in Scottsburg, IN, he was the son of John M. and Sue K. (Franks) Christie. He married Debra Hancock on August 21, 1977, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Elizabeth Christie of Madison, IN; his father and step-mother, John M. (Jack) and Deborah Christie of Scottsburg, IN; one sister, Robin Snelling of Scottsburg, IN; and one brother, Mike Christie of Scottsburg, IN. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sue Christie, on February 17, 1994.

A 1974 graduate of Mitchell High School, he attended Purdue University. In 1982 he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and achieved the rank of Captain. After leaving the Marine Corps in 1996, he became an active full time member of the Indiana National Guard. He was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250.

Services for John Christie will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, January 4th, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Kirkman officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Indiana National Guard, Cecil C. Martin American legion Post #250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9107. Chaney – Kenneth Chaney, Sr. of Tucson, AZ, died Friday, December 29, 2000, in Arizona. Born on June 12, 1944, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Beulah Tame.

Surviving are one daughter, Kelly Green of Seymour, IN; two sons, Kenneth Russell (Rusty) Chaney, Jr. of Columbus, IN, and Jeffrey Chaney of Seymour, IN; two brothers, the Rev. Curtis Kern, Sr. of Mitchell, IN, and Harry Orval Kern of French Lick, IN; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother; his step-father, Buthel Tame; and his grandparents.

He was a private vendor in Tucson, Arizona.

There will be a graveside service for Kenneth Chaney at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 4th, at Beech Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Leslie Hart officiating. Friends may call from 12 noon-2 p.m. Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Duncan – Joyce C. Duncan of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 29, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on June 20, 1947, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Russell and Mary (Leatherman) Mundy. She married Jack A. Duncan in 1965, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Mary Lou Roberts of Owensburg; three sons: Greg Duncan, Ronnie Duncan, and Jay Duncan, all of Bedford, IN; one sister, Betty Slate of Bedford, IN; one brother, Dale Mundy of Bedford, IN; one half-sister, Phylis (address unknown); one half-brother, Gordon Mundy of Brookville, IN; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Wayne and Bernard Mundy; and one sister, Quanita Mundy.

She was a homemaker and was a member of the First Assembly of God.

Funeral services for Joyce Duncan will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 2nd, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Pastors John Dodd and Glenn Duncan officiating. Burial will follow in Freedom Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

East – Adaline Rose East of Warren, MI, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at her resident. Born on November 23, 1923, in Indianapolis, IN, she was the daughter of Austin and Anna (Terrell) Ward. She married Dossie J. East in 1942, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are three sons: David J. East, Mart T. East, and Philip East, all of Michigan; two daughter, Nancy D. Martin of Bedford, IN, and Melody East of Michigan; one brother, Albert Ward of Bloomington, IN; nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Stone; and two brothers, William Luallen and Thomas Ward.

She was a retired business office manager in Warren, MI. She was a charter member of Davis Memorial Church of the Nazarene and was a member of Warren Woods Church of the Nazarene.

There will be a graveside service for Adaline East at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3rd, at Pleasant Run Cemetery with Bro. Dick Henderson officiating. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Faubion – Evelyn E. Faubion of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 28, 2000, at White River Lodge. Born on January 13, 1927, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of John and Hazel Hackney. She married Charles F. Faubion in August, 1947, and he died on July 5, 1998.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Becky Easterday of Paoli, IN; two sons, Gene Faubion of Fishers, IN, and Jerry Faubion of Cicero, IN; four brothers: Gene Hackney of Indianapolis, Ronnie Hackney of California, John Riley Hackney of South Carolina, and Jerry Hackney of Seymour, IN; two sisters, Charlotte Hawk of Orleans, IN, and Kern Barrett of California; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dan and Harley Hackney.

She was a homemaker and participated in the Senior Olympics.

Hawk – Corrine Hawk of DeLeon Springs, FL, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, in DeLeon Springs, FL. Born on October 4,, 1913, in Bloomfield, IN, she was the daughter of Jewett and Clara (Pelk) Mullis. She was first married to Joe Ashcraft in 1931. Her second marriage was to Willard Hawk, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Gloria Kay Adams of DeLeon Springs, FL; two sisters, Nin Whitaker of Somerset, KY, and Jewel Lefever of Leesville, IN; one grandson, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her second husband; one daughter, Joyce Lavon Wilson; two brothers, Max Mullis and Willard Myrel Mullis; and two sisters, Avis Mullis and Audrey Dye.

There will be a committal service for Corrine Hawk at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 30th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ashcraft Chapel Cemetery in Greene County, IN. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service time Saturday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Henderson – Lula M. Henderson of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on April 18, 1922, in Horse Cave, KY, she was the daughter of James J. and Florence (Hampton) Harper.

Surviving are one daughter, Joy Henderson of Bedford, IN; one sister, Anna Jeffries of Bedford, IN; one granddaughter; two nieces, and several great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Eugenia Chenault; and one brother, Stanley Harper.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bedford Baptist Temple.

There will be graveside services for Lula Henderson at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 30th, at Green Hill Cemetery with Johnny Johnson officiating. Friends may call from 12 noon till 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Hodgin – Phillip T. Hodgin, M.D. of Orleans, IN, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital of Orange County. Born on July 29, 1915, in Richmond, IN, he was the son of David O. and Helen (Kenworthy) Hodgin. He married Iris Hoar on June 1, 1940, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, P.T. Hodgin, Jr., M.D. of Indianapolis; two daughters, Barbara Justice of Lake Wylie, SC, and Cathy Holloway of Raleigh, NC; one brother, Everett Hodgin of Richmond, IN; and seven grandchildren.

He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1939 and received a masters degree in Public Health Administration at the University of Michigan in 1942. He served as district director in western Indian for the Indiana State Board of Health from 1942-1944, then served in the Army Occupational forces in Japan through 1946. In 1946 he opened his office in Orleans for practice of Family Medicine and retired in 1992, having practiced 46 years. He served as Orange County Health Officer from 1948-1991, was a charter and life member of the American Academy of Family Practice, life member of the American Medical Association, the Indiana State Medical Association, Indiana Public Health Association and Orange County Medical Society. He was a birthright Quaker. He was honored for his dedicated service to the citizens of Orleans in 1985, when he was selected as the Dogwood Festival Citizen of the Year. In addition to practicing medicine, one of his great pleasures was playing tennis.

Services for Phillip Hodgin will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 29th, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. David Strange officiating. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery. Wade – Kathryn Wade of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 26, 2000, at her residence. Born on July 18, 1917, in Tunnelton, IN, she was the daughter of Thomas Joshua and Myrtle (Jean) Faris. She married David Wade on April 29, 1936, and he died January 9, 1990.

Surviving are one son, D. Lynn Wade of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Sara Kathryn Williams of Bedford, IN, and Cinda Ellen Todd of Heltonville, IN; four sisters: Izillah Bush, Nona Haley, Virginia Bennett, and Barbara Sallee, all of Bedford, IN; seven grandchildren: Gregory Wade, Julie Karvoski, Wade Miller, Joshua J. Williams, Michael Dee Williams, Thomas T. Williams, and Derek Williams; and six great-grandchildren: Blake Wade, Daniel Wade, David Wade, Ashley Miller, Kyle Miller, and Taylor Miller. She was preceded in death by her husband; three sisters: Ellen Hobson, Rachel Starr, and Anna Mary Gabbert; and one brother, Ernest Faris.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Tunnelton United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was a 1934 graduate of Campbellsburg High School.

Hendricks – Barbara Jo Hendricks of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on December 1, 1928, in Greene County, IN, she was the daughter of Fred and Mildred (Fields) Thomasson. She married Walter Eugene Hendricks on March 5, 1949, and he died September 9, 1999.

Surviving are one son: Larry Eugene Hendricks of Mitchell, IN; two sisters, Jan Terry of Utah, and Maxine Roberts of Fayetteville, IN; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one daughter, Priscilla Gayle Hendricks; and three brothers, Sam, Dick, and Jerry Thomasson.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star #503.

Matson – Lilah E. Matson of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 25, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on July 13, 1922, in Pekin, IL, she was the daughter of Eugene F. and Olive (Marrs) Lohnes. She married Joseph T. Matson, Jr. on July 3, 1943, and he died on March 30, 1987.

Surviving are five daughters: Mary Ellen Martin of Franklin, IN, Ceil Matson of Chicago, IL, Ann Burge of Louisville, KY, Sarah Matson of Madison, WI, Kathryn Ailstock of Hagerstown, MD; one son, Robert Matson of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mabel Thompson of St. Paul, MN, and Ellen Paullin of Pekin, IL; one brother, William Lohnes of Chicago, IL; and ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband.

She was a graduate of Christian College in Columbia, MO. She was a member of: First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as an elder; a charter member of Little Theatre of Bedford, Past Secretary of Presbyterian Church of Ohio Valley; United Way Lawrence County Board Member; Ideal Club; Tri Kappa (Past President); Ladies of Round Table; Bedford Parks Board Member; Bedford Public Library Board Member.

Services for Lilah Matson will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, December 29th, at First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. John Ailstock, William B. Martin, and Jerry Kuyk officiating. There will be a reception following the Friday service at the the church. Memorial contributions are requested in lieu of flowers to be donated to the Limestone Girls Club Building Fund. Ferguson-Lee is in charge of the arrangements.

King – Francis Lee "Plug" King of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Huron, IN, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on May 14, 1937, in Huron, I, he was the son of Bruce and Ettie Helen (Owen) King. He married Sherry Lynn Moore on February 14, 1990, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are two step-daughters, Jennifer Lynn Turpen of Bedford, IN, and Elizabeth Ann Gray of Bloomington, IN; one brother, Joseph James King of Huron, IN; one sister, Wanda Sue Pruett of Huron, IN; and five step-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and two sister, Edith Marie King and Mary Alice Terry.

He was retired from GM Powertrain and was a 1955 graduate of Huron High School. He was a member of UAW Local 440, Carpenter's Union, and the Huron Church of God.

Services for Francis King will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 22nd, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Smoot officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the service time Saturday at Chastain Funeral Home.

Plake – Floyd W. Plake of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 21, 2000, at Mitchell Manor Nursing Home. Born on December 31, 1908, in Scott County, IN, he was the son of William Thomas and Josephine (McTarsney) Plake. He married Mary Fountain on July 3, 1946, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are three daughters: Liz Beyers and Shari Wisley, both of Bedford, IN, and Jeanie James ofTyro, KS; seven grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Forest Plake; three sisters: Nellie Sears, Lydia Martindale, and Bessie Thompson; and two daughters in infancy.

He was retired from M. Fine & Sons and a veteran. He was a retired president and manager of East Lawrence Water Corporation and was a past minister of Popcorn Christian Church and Pinhook Christian Church. He was a member Bedford Lions Club, AARP, Heltonville Area Veterans, and a member and Bible school teacher at Leatherwood Christian Church.

Services for Floyd Plake will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 24th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Lowell Roberts officiating. Hale – Oral H. (Boode) Hale of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, December 20, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on August 17, 1924, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Bige and Shirley (Bennett) Hale. He married Virginia Marsh on May 26, 1947, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one son, Stephen Hale of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Brenda Shaffer of Kingwood, TX; two brothers, Bud Hale and Jay Hale, both of Bedford, IN; one sister, Flo Myers of Bedford, IN; five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Joseph D. Hale; and one half-brother, Frank Nichols.

He was a retired salesman for Carriage House Furniture and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He was a member of Bedford Masonic Lodge #14 F&AM, Elks Lodge, and American Legion Gillen Post #33. He attended First Baptist Church and Free Methodist Church.

Clemons – William H. "Monk" Clemons, Jr. of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, December 19, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 26, 1928, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of William H. and Elizabeth Grace (Tilford) Clemons.

Surviving are one nephew, Michael Clemons of Cincinnati, OH; two cousins, Pamela S. Neal and Paula Greathouse of Bedford, IN; and several other cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Thomas Clemons.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the National AAU Basketball Association and a charter member of Mitchell-Orleans Exchange Club.

Services for William Clemons will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 22nd, at Chastain Funeral with Bro. Max Timbrook officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery with military rites accorded by members of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post #250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #9107. Harp – Lovell L. Harp of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 18, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on December 8, 1917, in Kale, IN, he was the son of Fred and Minnie Pearl (Baker) Harp. He married Rowana Henderson on May 18, 1941, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife is one daughter, Karen Rodgers of Wall Lake, MI, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

A former mayor of Bedford from 1972 to 1980, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He had set up the payroll system at NAD Crane in the early 1940's and had been a co-owner of a Bedford drugstore with Bernard Williams. Later he owned the Toggery Men's Wear for twenty years and worked at Hatfield Ford. He was a past president of Bedford Kiwanis Club and a member of Bedford Lodge #14 F&AM, Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Gillen Post #33. He was a member of First Christian Church and attended Hillcrest Christian Church.

Services for Lovell Harp will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, December 21st at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Charlie Scott officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of American Legion Gillen Post #33.. Fain – Rita K. Fain of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 17, 2000, at her residence. Born on July 18, 1957, in Albion, MI, she was the daughter of Calvin and Ada Bernice (Murphy) Baker.

Surviving are one son, Jesse Jay Fain, at home; one daughter, Dawn Marie Horton of Bedford, IN; her mother, Ada Goff of Bedford, IN; and one step-sister, Rhonda Renae Goff of Bloomington, IN. She was preceded in death by her father.

She formerly worked at Toby's Doughnut Shop and Hobby's Inn. She was a member of Charity Chapel.

There will be graveside services for Rita Fain at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 20th, at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Becky Ryan officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Darnell – Norman E. "Lou" Darnell of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, December 16, 2000, at his residence. Born on December 16, 1933, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Charles Russell and Aileen Vonita (Kinder) Darnell. He married Judith Kline on May 29, 1959, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Carole Stinson of Mitchell, IN; two sons, David Eugene Darnell of Mitchell, IN, and Brian Scott Darnell of Heltonville, IN; one sister, Loretta Joanne Burmeister of Auburn Hill, MI; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Russell Darnell; his mother, Aileen Vonita Darnell Sturgeon; and one grandchild.

He retired from Stone City Product in 1995, and was a 1952 graduate of Mitchell High School. He was a member of Bedford Boat Club, a founding member of White River Bowhunters, a former member of Mitchell-Orleans Exchange Club, and he had coached Little League.

McKnight – Hattie Mae McKnight of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 16, 2000, at White River Lodge. Arrangements are pending at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Born on April 14, 1919, in Kentucky, she was the daughter of William and Amanda Jane (Thompson) Burnette. She married Homer C. McKnight in December of 1941, and he died in November 1996.

Surviving are three sons: Homer Jr., Terry, and Tom McKnight, all of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Becky Morrow of Bloomington, IN, and Vickey Marshall of Crown Point, IN; one brother, Matt Burnette of Springville, IN; two sisters, Dora Sammons of Flat Rock, MI, and Lonzie Corwin of Indianapolis, IN; eighteen grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, several brothers and sisters, and one grandchild.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Pentecostal Church of Zion in French Lick, IN.

Moore – Eva Moore of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 16, 2000, at White River Lodge. Born on September 30, 1911, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Peter D. and Rosa N. (Cobb) Porter. She married Sherrill S. Moore on February 10, 1928, and he died September 13, 1973.

Surviving are one daughter, Rhea Dawn Fields of Owensburg, IN; one son, Riki D. Moore and his wife Shirley Moore of Bedford, IN; one sister, Marilyn Ashcraft of Owensburg, IN; and two granddaughters, Debra Susan Sparks and husband, Monte J. Sparks of Anderson, IN, and Jody J. Fields of Owensburg, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband; one sister, Agnes Crum on November 19, 2000; and one grandson, Rick D. Fields on November 19, 1977.

She retired from RCA in 1974 and was a member of Church of Christ.

Hall – Lyvonne Rose Hall of Bloomington, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 15, 2000, at Bloomington Convalescent Center. Born on December 1, 1928, in Sioux Falls, SD, she was the daughter of Claude and Agnes (Allbee) Mooney. She married Robert James Hall, and he died in 1970.

Surviving are one daughter, Nannette L. Stone of Bedford, IN; two sons, Russelolo C. Hall of Boone, NC, and R. Eugene "Gene" Hall of Hemet, CA; one sister, Helen Clare Griffin of Clinton, NC; one brother, Richard C. Mooney of Schaumburg, IL; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and; an infant daughter; and one brother, Gordon W. Mooney.

She was a homemaker. She had attended Oxnard College, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Sorority and a leader of the Women's Club. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Oxnard, where she was a leader of the Cub Scouts, and Campfire.

There will be private family services and burial conducted in Boone. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Ferguson-Lee.

Warren – Shirley Warren of Titusville, FL, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, December 15, 2000, at the Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, FL. Born on August 14, 1938, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Joseph L. and Elsie Maie (Butler) Johnson. She married Bobbie A. Warren on August 16, 1955, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are two sons: Robert Warren of Fayetteville, GA, and Gregory Gene Warren of Chicago, IL; one daughter, Jennifer Lea Hickam of Bloomington, IN; two sisters, Maxine Batchelor and Vickie Chitwood, both of Mitchell, IN; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Lavon McCart and Mary Alford.

She worked for the city of Mitchell for twenty years, serving as clerk-treasurer. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Clerk-Treasurer Association and the Great Outdoors Church, and an inactive member of Phi Beta Psi Sorority.

Blackburn – Jerry D. Blackburn of Smithville, IN, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on October 14, 1937, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Harry and Lola (Mulky) Blackburn. He married Sarah J. Patton and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Patty K. Burgi of Mitchell, IN; four sons: Michael Blackburn of Covington, KY, Kevin Blackburn, Kenneth Rhodes and Kevin Rhodes, all of Bloomington, IN; his mother and stepfather, Lola and William Davidson of Bedford, IN; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

He was a certified public accountant, retiring form Indiana University where he was a senior auditor. He had worked as a supervisor of electrical engineering at Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center and also did private accounting work in Monroe and Lawrence Counties. He was a 1955 graduate of Bedford High School, and he earned a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1959 and a degree in business administration from Indiana University in 1977. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Gillen Post 33 in Bedford, Gideons International and Smithville Christian Church, where he served as trustee, deacon, and co-financial secretary.

Boyd – Larry Dean Boyd of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, at Floyd County Hospital in New Albany, IN. Born on March 7, 1949, in Shoals, IN, he was the son of Delbert Boyd, deceased and Kenny & Ruby (Harder) Sanders. He married Gayla Miller on December 21, 1986, in Bedford, IN, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Heather Patrick of Mitchell, IN; one step-daughter, Janet Crowe of Bloomfield, IN; his parents, Kenny and Ruby Sanders of Shoals, IN; three brothers: Gary Boyd of Bedford, IN, and Dale Boyd and Bob Boyd, both of Shoals, IN; one sister, Linda Cannon of Kokomo, IN; four grandchildren: Stacey and Chase Patrick of Mitchell, IN, and Heather and Travis Crowe of Bloomfield, IN. He was preceded in death by his father, Delbert Boyd.

He had been a supervisor at NWSC Crane, retiring after thirty years. He was a 1967 graduate of Shoals High School and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in Vietnam. He was a member of Hillcrest Christian Church.

Moore – Pearl Moore of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 14, 2000, at the home of her granddaughter, Glenda Wellman. Born on March 27, 1916, in Casey County, KY, she was the daughter of Sam and Emily (Cobb) Sproles. She was married to Paul Jones, Cecil Bennett, and Virgil Moore, all of whom preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Joyce Douglas and Geneva Byrd, both of Bedford, IN; two sons, John P. Jones of Bedford, IN, and Mike Bennett of Radcliff, KY; two sisters, Ersie Holmes of Avoca, IN, and Marie Davidson of Florida; nineteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and eighteen great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three husbands; one son, Charles Grogan; five brothers: Willie, James, Henry, Claude, and Sam Sproles; and four sisters: Irene Mynatt, Lucy and Betty Sproles, and Ollie Hicks.

She had worked at Central Foundry-GM for seventeen years and was a member of Mitchell Church of God.

Hackney – Hazel Marie Hackney of Orleans, IN, died Wednesday, December 13, 2000, at Paoli Convalescent Center. Born on July 24, 1912, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of Thomas and Ethel (Love) Kellams. She married John F. Hackney in 1929, and he died in 1979.

Surviving are four sons: Ronald Hackney of Cayoga Park, CA, Gene Hackney of Indianapolis, IN, John Riley Hackney of Charleston, SC, and Jerry Hackney of Seymour, IN; three daughters: Evelyn Faubion of Bedford, IN, Charlotte Hawk of Orleans, IN, and Karen Barrett of Palmdale, CA; two brothers, Norman Kellams of Indianapolis, IN, and Bill Strother of Paoli, IN; three sisters: Zelma Smith, Janie Dilley, and Ruth Jones, all of Paoli, IN; twenty-three grandchildren, and several great and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Harley and Daniel Hackney; and one sister, Edith Nice.

Jean – Marvin L. Jean of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, December 16th, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on December 12, 1933, in Harrodsburg, IN, he was the son of Lester and Juanita (Lowery) Jean. He first married Alma Davis Taylor. He later married Wilma Daugherty, and she died in June 1996.

Surviving are three daughters: Carolyn Ragsdale, Sherry Richardson, and Patty Grissom, all of Bedford, IN; one sister, Vicky Seidenfeld of Boise, ID; two granddaughter, and three step-grandchildren.

He was a self-employed mechanic for more than forty years and owned Jean's Ashland and Service Center in Bedford. He was a member of the Mitchell Nazarene Church.

Scheibe – Bertha Irene Scheibe of Orleans, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, December 13, 2000, at the home of her granddaughter, Carlotta Mitchell. Born on January 31, 1901, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of William E. and Cora (Wright) Hunt. She married John L. Scheibe on June 2, 1920, and he died March 31, 1982.

Surviving are one daughter, Betty Burton of Bedford, IN; nine grandchildren: Carlotta Mitchell, Jo Underwood, and Jim Burton, all of Orleans, IN, Barbara Holiday of Mitchell, IN, Susie Dillard of New Albany, IN, Diana Long of Odessa, TX, Helen Bradley of Arlington, TX, Denise Branch of Sioux City, IA, and Larry Burton of Danville, IN; twenty-nine great-grandchildren, twenty-six great-great-grandchildren, one great-great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Frank Hunt; one grandson, John Burton; and one niece.

She was a member of the Mitchell Baptist Church, Mission Circle, Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Tri Kappa, and American Legion Auxiliary. She was a graduate of Orleans High School.

Horner – Flossie Marie Horner died Sunday, December 10, 2000, at Heritage House in Salem, IN. Born on October 18, 1912, in Washington County, IN, she was the daughter of Milo and Daisy (Collier) Brewer. She married Horatious Horner in 1940, and he died April 26, 1965.

Surviving are four sisters: Verla Hoggatt of Campbellsburg, IN, Gladys Fields and Blanch Varvel, both of Mitchell, IN, and Martha Mann of Orleans, IN; and two brothers, Delbert Brewer of Salem, IN, and Otho Brewer of Orleans, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband; one sister, Wilma Hamilton; and three brothers, Noble, John, and Homer Brewer.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church.

Mullis – Ralph J. Mullis of Brazil, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, December 10, 2000, at Clay County Health Care Center in Brazil. Born on November 18, 1901, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Floyd and Minnie (Mylving) Mullis. He married Ada Phillips Meadows on December 18, 1948, and she died August 19, 1994.

Surviving are two daughters, Becky Battson of Brazil, IN, and Mary Straub of Tennessee; four sons: Bill Mullis of Dayton, OH, Jack Mullis of Scottsdale, AZ, and Tom and Fave Mullis, both of Phoeniz, AZ; two step-sons, Frederick Oren Meadows of Ordville, CA, and Robert Meadows of Bedford, IN; one sister, Grace Houseman; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

He was a retired lathe operator from GM Allison's Maywood plant and was of the Pilgrim Holiness Faith.

Surviving are five sons: Charles, Claude , and Gary Rayhill, all of Mitchell, IN, Ernie Rayhill of Bakersfield, CA, and Larry Rayhill of Elkhart, IN; nineteen grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Virgil Rayhill; and one daughter, Sue West.

Simmerman – Mary C. Simmerman of Williams, IN, died Sunday, December 10, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 26, 1921, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Alva and Clara (Turpen) Owens. She married Elmer "Jake" Simmerman on September 25, 1939, and he died in 1998.

Surviving are two sons, Kenny Simmerman of Bedford, IN, and Gordon Simmerman of Harrodsburg, IN; one sister, Mildred Wever of Williams, IN; three grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers, Ralph, Edward, and Cecil Owens; and two sisters, Frances Pruett and Dorothy Inman.

She was a retired grocer at Simmerman Grocery in Williams and was a member of the Williams Church of Christ.

Tolbert – Bernell "Tate" Tolbert of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, December 10, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital of Orange County. Born on June 18, 1916, in Vincennes, IN, he was the son of Herschel and Evah (Ehlers) Tolbert. He married Phylis Miles on November 26, 1940, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are five daughters: Dena Fortner, Neva Gildersleeve, and Tammy Gardner, all of Bloomington, IN, Cheryl Burja of Ocala, FL, and Cathy Allen of Bedford, IN; three sisters: Roberta Risley, Norma Jean Clark, and Martha Lee Myers, all of Plainville, IN; seven grandchildren: Kim, Kurt, Kelly, and Kristy Burja, all of Ocala, FL, Kam Fortner of Ellettsville, IN, Brig Allen of Bedford, IN, and Corey Nikirk of Bloomington, IN; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Morris Tolbert.

He retired from General Motors as a tool and die maker and was the first secretary of the Bedford Independent Federal Credit Union. He was a 1934 graduate of Plainville High School and attended the New Mexico School of Mines. He was a member of First Christian, Mitchell Senior Citizens and a 50-year member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM.

Butler – Lahoma F. Butler of Springville, IN, died Saturday, December 9, 2000, at her residence. Born on October 18, 1915, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of James A. and Ora (Wininger) Hildum. She married W. Glenn Butler on June 3, 1933, and he died March 19, 1993.

Surviving are four daughters: Bonnie Arthur, Shirley Flynn, and Rita Anderson, all of Bedford, IN, and Glenda Young of Norman, IN; ten grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Charles Hildum; two sisters, Nancy Daniels and Mabel Morgan; and one grandson.

She was a member of Oolitic Pentecostal Church and served as pianist for more than sixty years. She worked in the family grocery, Hildum & Sons, until the early 1970's.

Erdmann – Loretta G. Erdmann of Bloomington, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 9, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on August 10, 1934, in Detroit, MI, she was the daughter of John and Margaret (Kocsis) Herod. She married Donald A. Erdmann on July 1, 1965, and he died February 24, 1999.

Surviving are two sons, Jeffery S. and Gregory K. Erdmann, both of Bloomington, IN; two daughters, Delores M. Lawrence and Donna M. Erdmann, both of Bloomington, IN; two brothers, John Herod of South Bend, IN, and Richard Herod of Spencer, IN; seven grandchildren, one niece, and one nephew. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one sister, Delores Fortner.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and Elks Lodge.

Gould – Wilma Gould of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 9, 2000, at Bedford Regional Hospital. Born on January 17, 1934, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Virgil and Margaret (Pigg) Turner. She married Chester Gould in 1957, and he died in 1987.

Surviving are are one step-son, Jerry Gould of Bedford, IN; two step-daughters, Patricia Chappell of Bedford, IN, and Betty Lisherness of California.; six step-grandchildren, one niece, and two nephews, including Jack Turner, who was her care-giver.

She had worked at Turner Grocery Store on O Street and for several years was caretaker of Bennett Cemetery. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church.

Jones – Glen Jones off Fayetteville, IN, died Saturday, December 9, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville, TN. Born on April 11, 1913, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Elmer and Iva (McCarty) Jones. He married Ruby Short on September 3, 1932, and she died on May 9, 1982. He then married Ethel Adamson, and she preceded him in death. He married Avonda Mitchell on November 21, 1994, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Wanda Luallen of Bedford, IN; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one step-son, Lester "Bud" Mitchell, Jr. of Bedford, IN; two step-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren.

He was retired from Central Foundry and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the New Guinea and Luzon Campaigns. He was a member of UAW Local 440 and a member of Fayetteville Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon for 45 years.

Fisher – Hazel C. Fisher of Pace, FL, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Friday, December 8, 2000, at her residence. Born on August 10, 1914, in Franklin, KY, she was the daughter of Walter and Josephine (Summers) Poole. She married William Jesse "Red" Fisher on May 16, 1931, and he died June 23, 1990.

Surviving are one brother, Clarence Poole of Springville, IN; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Robert Fisher; one daughter, Patricia Louden; and one sister, Rudy Helmuth.

He was a retired plumber from Triangle-Leahy. He was a member of Clear Creek Christian Church, Eagles Lodge, and Bedford Boat and Sportsmans Club.

Terrell – Frances E. Terrell of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, December 8, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 7, 1917, in Willisburg, KY, she was the daughter of Clarence and Ila Mae (Hardin) Moore. She married Barney Terrell, and he died in 1999.

Surviving are five daughters: Yvonne Combs and Ella Keith, both of Bedford, IN, Marilyn Durham of Burdine, KY, Peggy Bishop and Carol Clem, both of Orleans, IN; six sons: Aldine Terrell of Bloomington, IN, Eugene Terrell of Tunnelton, IN, Bill Terrell of Mitchell, IN, Barney J. Terrell Jr. of Springville, IN, Larry Terrell of Norman, IN, and Ronnie Terrell of Orleans, IN; forty-four grandchildren, and forty-six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister, Ruby Lewis.

She was a member of the Church of God.

Embree – Katherine F. Embree of Bryantsville, IN, died Thursday, December 7, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on June 18, 1914, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Daniel and Linda (Asbury) Turpin. She married James H. Embree on August 1, 1931, and he died April 7, 1980.

She was a homemaker and a member of Bryantsville Church of Christ.

Surviving are one son, James T. Embree of Shelbyville, KY; three daughters: Mary E. Tincher of Bedford, IN, Ida Kay Smith of Taylorsville, IN, and Edna P. Carter of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Edna Morris of Bedford, IN; sixteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Melinda F. Asbury; one sister, Janie Smith; one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.

Fines – Geraldine Hayes Fines of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 7, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on August 5, 1921, in Jasonville, IN, she was the daughter of Thomas and Myrtle (Robinson) Hayes. She married William C. Fines on August 12, 1939, and he survives.

Surviving with her husband are one daughter, Claudia Marshall of Bedford, IN; four brothers: Don Hayes of Florida, Tom Hayes, Frank Hayes, and Richard Hayes, all of Bedford, IN; one sister, Phyllis Clawson of Delphi, IN; one great-grandchild, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William Hayes and Sammy Hayes; and two sisters, Kathleen Judah and Rose Mary Lee.

She was a secretary at Federal Land Bank in Bedford and was a member of Gulletts Creek Baptist Church.

Services for Geraldine Fines will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 11th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Lewis Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. Kinder – Ernest Lawrence Kinder of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 7, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on March 3, 1958, in Indianapolis, IN, he was the son of Harry A. Kinder, who survives.

He was a 1976 graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School and was a member of Hillcrest Christian Church. His hobby was photography.

There will be graveside services for Ernest Kinder at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 9th, at Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Cemetery with Charlie Scott officiating. Friends may gather at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home for the funeral procession to the cemetery.

Ryan – Charlotte R. Ryan of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, December 7, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 10, 1934, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of Daniel and Bertha (Phillippe) Ray.

Surviving are one son, William (Billy) Ryan of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Debbie Bauer and Denise Myers, both of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Wanda Sue Conolty and Margie Briscoe, both of Bedford, IN; three brothers: Robert Ray and Warren Ray, both of Bedford, IN, and Lewis (Doc) Ray of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, including Erica Ryan, who was raised in the home; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sister, Geneva Speer and Lois Turpen.

She was a homemaker and had served in the U.S. Air Force.

Spires – Dora Smith Spires of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, December 5, 2000, at her residence. Born on May 14, 1908, in Laurel County, KY, she was the daughter of William E. and Malissa (Perry) Jones. She married Wilbur Milton Smith on July 17, 1927, and he died January 11, 1981. She then married Opal Spriles on June 29, 1991, and he died April 6, 1997.

Surviving are one several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were one daughter in infancy; one sister, Rhoda E. Ray; and one brother, Charles Jones.

She was retired from Sarkes-Tarzian with twenty years of service. She was a member of the Oolitic Trinity Pentecostal Church.

Orman – Ernest R. Orman of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 4, 2000, at Hospitality House. Born on June 12, 1913, in Spencer, IN, he was the son of Harley and Elsie (Stevens) Orman. He married Vera M. Bridgewater on August 27, 1938, in Brazil, IN, and she survives.

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Mrs. Jack (Wanda M. ) McConnel of Altomont Springs, FL; one son, Ron Orman of Bedford IN; one brother, Gene Orman of Minneapolis, MN; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters.

He had been an owner-operator of Dairy Queen in Lebanon, IN, retiring in 1975. Mr. Orman moved to Bedford in 1975 and was a member of First Christian Church in Bedford.

Robbins – Mary E. Robbins of Bedford, IN, died Monday, December 4, 2000, at Hospitality House. Born on September 14, 1900, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Phoebe Ellen (Crane) Stroud. She married Louis Robbins in 1923, and he died in 1977.

Surviving are one daughter, L. June Harrell of Bedford, IN; two sons, Douglas L. Robbins of Nashville, TN, and Loran W. Robbins of Greenwood, IN; one brother, Walter Stroud of Shoals, IN; eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers, and five sisters.

She was a homemaker and a member of Central Church of Christ.

There will be graveside services for Mary Robbins at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 7th, at Cresthaven Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Jim Voglewede officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service time at the chapel. The Day & Carter Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.

Chapman – Anna Marie Chapman of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, December 2, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 12, 1914, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of Harry and Louisa (Grimes) Lynch. She married Jesse Chapman on March 21, 1936, and he died December 8, 1997.

Surviving are two daughters, Rose Marie Merry of Mitchell, IN, and Nancy Ellen Mobley of Odon, IN; one son, William Donald Chapman of Peterson, AL; four brothers: Harold Lynch of Amo, IN, Leo Lynch of Williams, IN, Milton Lynch of Smithville, IN, and Marion Lynch of Hesperia, MI; two sisters, Edith Inman of Crane, IN, and Mary Jones of Shoals, IN; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Karen Terrell; and eight brothers: John, Keith, Paul, Charles, Harry, Robert, Frederick, and Donald Lynch.

Erwin – Irma Helen Erwin of Bedford, IN, formerly of Vincennes, IN, died Saturday, December 2, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on April 10, 1909, in Vincennes, IN, she was the daughter of Isaac and Ida (McGaughey) Moran. She married Claude Winford Wewin on October 4, 1930, and he died on May 29, 1969.

Surviving are one daughter, Kathryn Root of Bedford, IN; two sons, Robert Erwin of Bloomington, IN, and David Erwin of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Shaw; one half-sister, Dira Kixmiller; and one grandchild.

She had owned and operated Erwins Grocery from 1952 until 1969.

Kelly – Anna Bernice Kelly of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 2, 2000, at Bedford Hospitality House. Born on December 20, 1923, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Floyd and Edna (Stewart) Meadows. She married George Kelly on December 23, 1939, and he died on January 25, 1973.

Surviving are two sons, Neil Kelly and James Kelly, both of Bedford, IN; one brother, Roy Meadows of Ohio; one sister, Phyllis Bunch of Bloomington, IN; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

She had worked for RCA for thirteen years and at Fourwinds in Bloomington for fourteen years.

There will be graveside services for Anna Kelly on Monday, December 4th, at Hanson Cemetery with the Rev. J.D. Pickett officiating. Services are under the direction of the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Mason – Paul A. "Tony" Mason of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, December 2, 2000, at the V.A. Medical Center in Indianapolis. Born on March 1, 1947, in Nevada, MO, he was the son of Joe R. and Patricia (Neary) Mason. He was never married.

Surviving are one brother, Joe Pat Mason of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Jennifer L. Fellers of Bloomfield, IN, and Mary (Kris) Harris of Bedford, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Sammy Joe Mason; and one sister, Carroll Ann Lambton.

He worked as Crew Chief for Mike Arena Surveying for over twenty years. He attended Bedford High School and as a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Mitchell American Legion.

Services for Paul Mason will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 7th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of American Legion. Friends may call from 19 a.m. until the service time on Thursday.

Geyer – Roscoe Junior Geyer of Seminal, FL, formerly of Bedford IN, died Friday, December 1, 2000, at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital in Seminal, FL. Born on April 11, 1922, in St. Joseph County, IN, he was the son of Roscoe C. and Emma (VonBergon) Geyer. He married Mary L. Geyer, and she survives

Surviving with his wife are one daughter, Linda Sherfey of Norfolk, VA; two sons, Mark D. Geyer of Bedford, IN, and Gregory A. Geyer of Odon, IN; one sister, Miriam Nifong of Breman, IN; five grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Don, Theodore, and Keith Geyer.

He had been owner of Cresthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery for over 30 years, was a former Lawrence County Councilman, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was past President of the Bedford Kiwanis, past President of the Indiana Cemetery Association, and past president of LaOrMa Shrine Club. He was a member of of Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Bedford American Legion, Masonic Lodge No. 142 R&AM, Scottish Rite-Valley of Indianapolis, York Rite of Bedford, Royal Order of Scotland, Murat Temple-Indianapolis, and the Highland Shrine Club.

Services for Roscoe Geyer will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, December 7th, at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Private entombment will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
