09/30/2000 Barker – Opal Katherine Barker of Indianapolis, IN, died Saturday, September 30, 2000, at her residence. Born on July 26, 1928, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Walter C. and Hallie (Leatherman) Payton. She had been married to James W. Barker. Surviving are one son, John Barker of Shirley, IN; two sisters, Betty Stockton of Bedford, IN, and Pat McGath of Pendleton, IN; one brother, Jack Payton of Bedford, IN; four grandsons, and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters: Dorothy Dixon, Helen Mathews, Mary Ellen Lawyer, and Nola Padgett; and three brothers: Leonard Payton, Harold Eugene Payton, and Joe Payton. She retired from Curry Miller Veneers in Indianapolis after forty years of service and was a graduate of Shawswick High School. She was a member of the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Services for Opal Barker will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 4th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Buddha Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Byers – Robert Byers of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, September 30, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on July 9, 1913, in Flora, IL, he was the son of Elvin Earl and Alma Ruth (Holmes) Byers. He married Eunice Klein on August 21, 1934, and she survives. Surviving are two sons, David Byers of Bedford, IN, and Ross Byers of Winchester, VA; one daughter, Margaret Klein of Indianapolis; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Mark Byers; and one sister, Marie Myers. He retired from Dixie Orchard Co of Vincenner in 1981 and was co-owner of Applacres since 1962. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a member of the Indiana and Virginia Horticulture Societies. Services for Robert Byers will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 4th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Curtis Hurley officiating. Love of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, September 30, 2000, at the Bedford Hospitality House. Born on May 18, 1912, in Kentucky, she was the daughter of Lum and Ethel (Geralds) Day. She married Doyle J. Love in 1932, and he died on September 20, 1988. Surviving are one daughter, Patty Browning of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Cecil and John Day, both of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Valeria Mason of Bedford, IN, and Elizabeth Finn of Martinsville, IN; and one grandson, Russ Browning of Bedford, IN. Rains of Oolitic, IN, died Saturday, September 30, 2000, at his residence. Born on August 19, 1937, in Oolitic, IN, he was the son of Samuel and Bertha (Harvey) Raines. He married Jenell Lynch Thompson on August 31, 1985, and she survives. Also surviving are one step-daughter, Jeanne New of Avoca, IN; two brothers, Frank Rains of Bedford, IN, and Arvin Rains of Florida; one sister, Mary Sproles of Stilesville, IN; and one step-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Palmar Rains; and two sisters, Josephine Johnson and Virginia Wray. He worked as a general laborer and was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, a lifetime member of Father's Auxiliary, the VFW No. 2686, and the Hoosier Hills CB Club, using the handle "Oolitic Governor". Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. 09/28/2000 Dunagan – Opal Lucille Dunagan of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, September 28, 2000, at Hospitality House. Born on April 2, 1904, in New Richmond, IN, she was the daughter of Dayton B. and Elsie (Reynolds) Westfall. She married Carl Dunagan on August 25, 1925, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one nephew, one great-niece, and one great-great nephew. She was retired from Dunn Memorial Hospital, where she had worked in the office. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Women's Missionary Society, and the Diligentia Club. Services for Opal Dunagan will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 2nd, at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service time at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. 09/27/00 Bevers – Debra Marie Bevers of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, September 27, 2000, at her residence. She had been seriously injured in the 1990 tornado which devastated Pride Estates in Bedford. Born on March 20, 1952, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ernest D. and Maxine V. (Lee) Rogers. Surviving are one son, Brandon Bevers, at home; one daughter, Mandy Bevers, at home; and one brother, Terry Rogers of Bedford, IN. There will be graveside services for Debra Bevers will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 29th, at Beech Grove Cemetery with Bro. Millard Jones officiating. There will be no calling hours. Root of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, September 27, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on May 9, 1929, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Elbert and Mae (Williams) Walker. She married Vernon Root on March 8, 1949, in Bedford, IN, and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Edward (Sherry) Rodman and Mrs. David (Barbara) Baugh, both of Bedford, IN; one brother, Gerald Walker of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Sue Weaver of Michigan City, IN, and Phyllis Enochs of St. Louis, MO; four grandchildren, one great-grandson, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Root in 1957. She had been a housekeeper at Dunn Memorial Hospital, retiring after twenty-two years. She was a graduate of Shawswick High School and a member of Crossroads Community Church. Services for Betty Root will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Gerkin of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, September 26, 2000, at his residence. Born on October 9, 1942, at Spring Mill State Park in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Paul and Margaret (Hickman) Gerkin. He married Charlotte Hodges on October 31, 1963, and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Rebecca Gerkin of Mitchell, IN; two sons, Gary Gerkin and Barry Gerkin, both of Mitchell, IN; and one sister, Patty Elliott of Xenia, OH. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Janet Elliott. He was a retired employee of Regal-Beloit, an Air Force veteran, and a 1960 graduate of Paoli High School. He was a member of Paoli Friends Church. Following cremation, there will be a private burial service for Gary Gerkin in Stampers Creek Cemetery. Born on January 25, 1914, in Pine Bluffs, WY, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Myrtle (Ault) Huntwork. She married Lewis Haskett on May 28, 1935, and he died August 27, 1962. Surviving are one daughter, Joyce Widup of Bedford, IN; one brother, Vernie Huntwork of Florida; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters, Avis Stotzel and Lucille Bunsold; two brothers, Floyd and Jack Huntwork. She was a homemaker and of Protestant faith. Johnson – Mary Jane (Mane) Johnson, of Seymour, IN, died Tuesday, September 26, 2000, at Lutheran Community Home in Seymour, IN. Born on March 28, 1914, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Claude and Lillie (Smiley) Meadows. She married Claude Johnson on December 23, 1933, and he preceded her in death on January 31, 1996. Surviving are two daughters: Sharon Freeman and Joan Martin, both of Seymour, IN; two sisters: Maudelena Gillespie of Red Key, IN, and Martha Wolf of Warsaw, IN; one brother, William Meadows of Bartlettsville, IN; four grandchildren, one great-grandson, one step-granddaughter, two step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents, one step-son, Marvin Johnson, two sisters: Mabel Lawyer and Betty Meadows, one brother James Meadows, and one grandson, Bradley Martin. She was a cook at Heltonville School in Lawrence County and a babysitter. She was a member of Bartlettsville Christian Church for 45 years, and a member of Friendly Circle Club of Bartlettsville. Pridemore – Alice Shirley Pridemore of Mitchell, died Tuesday, September 26, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on March 11, 1927, in Birmingham, AL, she was the daughter of Ralph J. and Vera (Gilbert) Reeves. She married James W. Pridemore on June 6, 1943, and he died December 18, 1983. Surviving are three sisters: Gwen Holsapple of Mitchell, IN, and Geraldine Glowers and Mildred Burggett, both of Alabama; and one niece, Lynn Southern of Bloomington, IN. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one brother, Ralph J. Reeves. She was a homemaker and of Baptist faith. Turpen – Viola Turpen of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, September 26, 2000, atthe Hospitality House. Born on November 20, 1913, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of James and Ada Mae (Crider) Johnson. She married Goffria Turpen on January 21, 1933, and he died on January 29, 2997. Surviving are two sons, Dewey and Joy Dean Turpen, both of Bedford, IN; one brother, Plass Johnson of Bedford, IN; three sisters: Loretta Marvilius of Muncie, IN, Maddline Cheeseman of Charlestown, IN, and Lucille Johnson of Missouri; ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Jerry Don and Willard Turpen; two daughters, Wanda Fay Turpen and Laverne Kaye Stafford; six brothers: Verle, Earl, Doyle, Eugene, and Harrell Johnson; three sisters: Beatrice Covey, Alma Todd, and Dora Cheeseman. Born in 1944 in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Millie Jacob and Ethel (Ramey) Bundy. She married John E. Jones, Sr. in 1960, and he survives. Also surviving are two sons, John E. Jones, Jr., and Troy Dean Jones, both of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Tonya Marie Hattabaugh of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Susie McClain of Franklin, IN; four brothers: Jerry and Robert Bundy, both of Mitchell, Mervin Bundy of Ohio, and Millie Jacob Bundy, Jr. of Indianapolis; and eight grandchildren. Born on October 8, 1930, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Thomas A. and Elva Glodena (Goodman) Stafford. She married Robert Flynn on June 28, 1947, and he survives. Also surviving are three sons: Robert Steven Flynn of Springfield, IL, Timothy Ray Flynn of Bloomington, IN; and John Alan Flynn of Bedford, IN; four daughters: Nelda Sue Flynn of Bloomington, IN; April Dawn Lyons of Bedford, IN; Nancy Ellen Flynn-Hert of Springville, IN; and Heather Joy Flynn of Bedford, IN; two sisters: Carmen Crawford of Columbus, IN; and Deanna Moore of Bedford; fifteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Michael David Flynn, and one sister, Maribelle Kast. She was a homemaker. Ashcraft of Bedford, IN, died September 22, 2000, at Vencor Hospital in Greenwood, IN. Born on May 23, 1924, in Green County, IN, he was the son of Joseph and R. Blanche Wright. He married Mary E. Jackson in May, 1941, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Roger Ashcraft of Roswell, GA, and Larry Ashcraft of Rochester, NY; two daughters, Judy Rayle and Linda Gregory, both of Bedford, IN; three sisters: AdaMae Hamilton and Ruby Easton, both of Bedford, IN, and Margaret Allen of Owensburg, IN; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Gene Ashcraft, and one brother, Harold Ashcraft. He was retired from NWSC Crane and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Navy Air Force. Born on September 3, 1919, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Jess and Minnie (Fox) Connerly. She married Elmer Terrell, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one daughter, Sheila Massie of Bloomington, IN; three sons: James Connerly, Robert Terrell, and Larry Terrell, all of Mitchell, IN; nineteen grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Matthews; one son, Phillip Terrell; two sisters, two brothers, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Dorsett of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, September 20, 2000, at Westview Manor. Born in 1905 in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Harley and Blanche (Sears) Fields. She married Marvin Dorsett in 1922, and he died in 1982. Surviving are two sons, Paul Dorsett and Bill Dorsett, both of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Betty Howell of Bedford, IN, and Helen Burchard of Williams, IN; seventeen grandchildren, thirty-three great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and one niece. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Nelda Gould; two sons, Marvin Leroy Dorsett and Marion Dorsett; one great-grandson, and two nephews. Born on December 15, 1923, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Barney and Roxie Jane (King) Miller. He married Mary Kay Gehring, and she preceded him in death. Surviving are three brothers: Marvin Miller of Bedford, IN, Robert Miller of Mitchell,, IN, and Norman Miller of Florida; three sisters: Sue Beasley and Geraldine Bex, both of Mitchell, IN, and Ishmael Baker of Seymour, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Larry D. Miller, and two brothers, Raymond and Lester Miller. He was retired froom GM Powertrain and was a World War II veteran. Born on July 4, 1920, in Onarga, IL, she was the daughter of Urban and Dottie (Williams) Deaver. Surviving are one son, Larry Deaver of Bedford; one sister, Bessie Mundy of Mitchell, one niece, one nephew, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother, Noble, and two sisters: Helen Hogue and one sister in infancy. She was a custodian for Lincoln School and Methodist Church. She was a member of the Moose Lodge Auxiliary. "Winnie" Weddle of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, September 18, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on August 10, 1922, in Murray County, OK, she was the daughter of Joseph A. and Lula R. (Newman) Elliston. She married Donald "Jack" Weddle on August 25, 1940, and he preceded her in death on October 9, 1987. Surviving are one daughter, Brenda Reynolds of Mitchell, IN; one son, Roy Weddle of Mitchell, IN; two sisters: Verna Shaffer of California, and Annabelle Neal of Sulphur, OK; two brothers: Louis Elliston of California, and Sam Elliston of Sulphur, OK; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and two sisters. She was retired from RCA in Bloomington and of the Protestant faith. Services for Winonah P. Jeffries of Bedford, IN, died Sunday September 17, 2000 at Westview Manor in Bedford. Born on November 3, 1904, in Hart County, KY, she was the daughter of Errett and Nancy (Bales) Owen. She married Harvey G. Jeffries on February 17, 1923, and he preceded her in death on May 6, 1987. Surviving are one son, Willard Herschel Jeffries of Ranchester, WY; one daughter, Mrs. Irene Piper of Bedford; three sisters: Rose Owen of Jeffersonville, IN, Carrie Snelling of Clarksville, IN, and Eunice Barrett of Henryville, IN; twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sons: Harvey P. and Clifford Jeffries; two brothers: Bruner and Luther Owen; four sisters: Verda, Myrtle, Lena and Ann; and one grandchild. She was a retired Nurses' Aid at Dunn Memorial Hospital and a member of Pink Ladies of Dunn Memorial Hospital. She married Vaughn Pierce, and he preceded her in death in 1998. Surviving are one son, David M. Pierce of Clarksville, IN; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Ronald E. Pierce. She worked at the Naval Warfare Center Crane in WWII, Golden Gables, and as activity director at a Bedford nursing home. She was also an Avon representative and a member of both the Bedford First Church of the Nazarene and Parkwood Church of the Nazarene in Clarksville. Born on June 12, 1914, she was the daughter of Charles and Mollie (Rollins) Adams. She married Jess Bennett in 1931, and he preceded her in death in 1975. Surviving are one son, James W. Bennet of Bedford; one daughter, Pruda Nurcham of Ellettsville, IN; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Littrel Lee; four brothers, four sisters, and one grandson. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Assembly of God in Bedford. Surviving are four sisters: Gloria Poole, Loretta Eads, and Helen Hupp, all of Bedford, IN, and Juanita Reuter of Springville, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two his parents; two brothers, Roger Dale (Teako) Ray and Harold (Poss) Ray; and one sister, Erma Jeanette Ray, in infancy. He was retired from RCA in Bloomington and was a veteran of WW II, serving with the US Army. He was a member of the East Oolitic Baptist Church and was a life-long member of Disable American Veterans. Services for William Ray will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 7th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Millard Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Hopkins Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of the American Legion Gillen Post #33 of Bedford. Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. 09/01/00 Mitchell – Enid Fountain Mitchell of Bedford, IN, died Friday, September 1, 2000, at her residence. Born on February 13, 1907, she was the daughter of Howard and Anna (Barch) Lackey. She married Wayne Fountain,, and he preceded her in death. She married Romie Mitchell, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one son, David Fountain of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Ann Smith of Bedford, IN; one sister, Audrey Holmes of Bedford, IN; five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three nieces. She was preceded in death by two husbands and one great-grandchild. She was a homemaker and a member of Old Union Christian Church and the Old Bridge Club. Services for Enid Mitchell will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 5th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Gene Pruett officiating. Burial will follow in Old Union Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday and from 9 a.m. until the service time Tuesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions be made to Old Union Christian Church or Old Union Cemetery Fund.
