07/31/2000

Arnold – Coy Edward Arnold of Bedford, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at his residence. Born on January 10, 1918, in Mannington, KY, he was the son of Sterling and Eva Jane (Stokes) Arnold. He married Virginia Louise Freeman on August 10, 1938, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Edward Eugene Arnold of Elnora, TN; three daughters: Donna Carol Pannell of Tampa, FL, Judith Diane Coburn and Donnetta Gail Eads, both of Bedford, IN; one niece who was raised in the home, Tina Sluder of Bedford, IN; one brother, Forrest Odel Arnold of Hammond, IN; twelve grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Owen, Thurston, and Archie Arnold; and two sisters, Lorene Hancock and Sybil Latham.

He was a bricklayer and retired from General Motors Powertrain in 1986. He was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of Faith Mission Church, and United Auto Worker Local #440.

Services for Ed Arnold will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 3rd, at Faith Mission Church with the Rev. Leonard Sankey officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Shoals. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home and from 11 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the church. Knight – Priscilla Hamer Hinshaw Knight of Mitchell, IN, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Wedgewood Healthcare Center in Clarksville. Born on May 24, 1908, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Albert and Alma (Palmer) Hamer. She married John M. Hinshaw on January 19, 1929, and he died June 4, 1968. She married Chester Knight on January 1, 1975, and he died September 15, 1994.

Surviviing are one daughter, Patricia Meyer of Clarksville, IN; two step-sons, Charles B. Knight of Oakland City, IN, and James G. Knight of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Catherine West of Clarksville, IN, and Jeffrey Meyer of Depauw, IN; five step-grandchildren, one great grandson, and ten step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John Hamer and Frank Hamer; and one sister, Georgia Wilcox.

She was a former shoe store clerk, receptionist in a physician's office, and a retired secretary for the City of Mitchell. She was the great-granddaughter of Hugh Hamer, founder of a village near Mitchell, which is now Spring Mill State Park. She was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Mitchell Associate chapter of Tri Kapa, Farm Bureau, and an associate member of Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association.

Funeral services for Priscilla Knight will be a 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 3rd, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Revs. Jack Shake and Bill Sweigart officiating. Burial will follow in Hamer Cemetery at Spring Mill State Park. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until the service time on Thursday at Chastain Funeral Home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Morrison – Catherine M. Morrison of Oolitic, IN, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Hospitality House. Born on October 30, 1911, in Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of Grover and Mabel (Thomas) Anderson. She married Harold F. Morrison on July 31, 1923, and he died June 18, 1972.

Surviving are three sisters: Grovetta Tosti of Bedford, IN, Velma Dunn of South Bend, IN, and Helen Thompson of Martinsville, IN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Carol Hamm, and one brother, Dale Anderson.

She was associated with Morrisons Hardware Store and was a member of Oolitic Church of Christ.

Services for Catherine Morrison will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2nd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Rob Fenton officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Burton – Willola Scoville Burton of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on July 9, 1913, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of William and Elsie (Meissner) Reynolds. She married Harold Scoville in 1932, and he died in 1979. She married Leland S. Burton on December 27, 1973, and he died January 14, 1992.

Surviving are one daughter, Sherry Sander of Mitchell, IN; one grandson, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Walter W. Reynolds in 1987.

She was a 1931 graduate of Bedford High School and past president of Delta Sigma Kappa. She was a member of the John Wallace Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Services for Willola Burton will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 1st, at Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Kirkman officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from noon until the service time Tuesday at the Chastain Funeral Home.

Dalton – Louis E. Dalton of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 30, 2000, at White River Lodge. Born on June 26, 1927, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of John and Katherine (Cline) Dalton. He married Mary Peters on November 5, 1967, in Indianapolis, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Larry and Leonard Dalton, both of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Linda Fisher of Bedford, IN; one brother, Ronald Dalton of Arkansas; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lucy Thurman; and one brother, Jack Dalton.

He retired from Ironworkers Local No. 22 and was a member of the Oolitic Trinity Pentecostal Church.

Services for Louis Dalton will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 2nd, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Jones – Edith Kay Jones of Springville, IN, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on December 3, 1941, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ora and Anna (Strunk) Conner. She married Edward Franklin Jones on November 20, 1962, and he survives.

Also surviving are four daughters: Angela Davis of Bloomington, IN, Karen Smith of Smithville, IN, Cheryl Stancombe of Bargersville, IN, and Kathryn Weddle of Oolitic, IN; three sons: Jef Jones and Brian Jones, both of Bedford, IN, and Tim Jones of Springville, IN; her mother of Springville, IN; one brother, Dale Conner of Martinsville, IN; eleven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father; one granddaughter, Sonya Kaye Jones; three sisters: Mary M. Conner, Cheryl Conner, and Rose Conner; and one nephew.

She was a homemaker and a member of Tunnel Hill Pentecostal Church.

Stipp – Pauline Stipp of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on April 11, 1907, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Frank Marion and Cora Mae (Green) Bareford.

Surviving are three nieces: Mary Lou Hawkins of Akron, OH, Mary Sue Studgeon of St. Petersburg Beach, FL, and Sherry P. Inman of Eugene, OR; and three nephews: Jerry Carmichael of Mitchell, IN, Ralph Nugent of Medford, OR, and Tom Bareford of Carmel, IN. She was preceded in death by two brother, Edgar and Leonard Bareford; three sisters, Mary Nugent, Katie Kesner, and Lucille Carmichael.

She was a retired employee of Trav-Ler Corporation and Hoffmans. She was a member of First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School for eighteen years, and was a past president and member of Theta Zeta chapter of Phi Beta Psi Sorority, past worthy matron of Order of Eastern Star #503, and Fleur-d-Lis Club.

Services for Pauline Stipp will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 2nd, at Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Josh Brumfield officiating. Burial will follow in Mitchell Cemetery. King – Maurice E. King of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 28, 2000, at Hospitality House. Born on March 29, 1929, in Oolitic, IN, he was the son of Farris N. and Ruth F. (Keithley) King.

Surviving are one brother, Wayne King of Indianapolis; one sister, Viola Petson of Orlando, FL; two nieces, two nephews, and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Ruby L. Stout.

Services for Maurice King will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 1st, at Cresthaven Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Jon Lineback officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. There will be no visitation prior to the service. Cresthaven Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Martin – Rhoda M. Martin of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on March 5, 1921, in Sommerset, KY, she was the daughter of Ruby Wilson. She married William E. Martin in 1945, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons, Rick and Jackie Martin of Bedford, IN, and Farrell Martin of Springfield, NE; one daughter, Carol Clifton of Bedford, IN; eighteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dewey, three brothers and four sisters.

She was a homemaker.

Wade – George Robert (Bob) Wade of Shoals, IN, died Wednesday 26, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on December 6, 1944, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of George H. and Ethel Mae (Gee) Wade. He married Mary E. Thomas on May 8, 1965, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Brian Wade of Shoals, IN, and Scott Wade of Bedford, IN; his parents of Shoals, IN; three brothers: Larry Dean and Tommy Wade, both of Mitchell, IN, and Ronald Wade of Shoals, IN; six grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Benny Wayne Wade in 1947, and his grandparents.

He worked in auto body repair and as a mechanic and served ten years in the Indiana National Guard.

Thompson – Pauline L. Thompson of Springville, IN, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on August 13, 1928, in England, she was the daughter of Anthony and Gertrude (Pohl) Walle. She married William O. Thompson on October 10, 1944, and he died July 12, 1992.

Surviving are three daughters: Mrs. Jeff (Donna) Deckard and Mrs. Walter (Rebecca) Evans, both of Springville, IN, and Mrs. Ron (Jayne) Silvers of Oolitic, IN; one sister, May Evans of England; twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Anthony in 1988 and David in 1994.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Springville Pentecostal Mission.

Super – Sandra Super of Bedford, IN, died Monday, July 24, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on February 6, 1949, in Connersville, IN, she was the daughter of George Curtis and Mildred (Cain) Enochs. She married Don Super on May 25, 1996, and he survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Amy Luman of Bloomington, IN, and Shannon Endris of Bedford, IN; three step-daughters: Angel Jackson and Christina Super, both of Bedford, IN, and Dinah Super of Bloomington, IN; her parents of Bedford, IN; six brothers: Ed and George Enochs, both of Bloomington, IN, Rich Enochs of Oolitic, IN, Greg and Randy Enochs, both of Bedford, IN, and Allen Enochs of Greenwood, IN; one sister, Rosanne Norris of Bedford, IN; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Dan Baker.

She was employed at G.M. Powertrain for twenty-three years. She was a member of First Pentecostal Church and the U.A.W. Local #440.

Services for Sandra Super will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 26th, at the First Pentecostal Church of God with Pastor Rodney Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery. Pruett – Jennie Catherine Pruett of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on December 8, 1909, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Nettie (Colvin) Grimes. She married Clifford Pruett on June 25, 1934, and he died on August 20, 1967.

Surviving are one daughter, Charlene Sue Dotts of Bedford, IN, and four grandsons. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lucy Mundy; one son-in-law, Jerry Mundy; one sister, Harriett Culver; two brothers, Loral and William Grimes; and two grandsons, Michael and Randy Mundy.

She had worked as a waitress at Woolworths from 1965-1973 and was a member of Central Church of Christ and Royal Neighbors of America.

Branaman – Rose Alice Branaman of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on November 15, 1921, in Lawrence county, IN, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Elkins) Wade. She married Marvin A. (Fuzzy) Branaman on March 23, 1940, and he died November 21, 1973.

Surviving are three sons, Gene, Joe, and Ronnie Branaman, all of Bedford, IN; one brother, John Wade of California; six grandchildren, and sixteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Donnie Branaman in 1989; one brother, James (Tink) Wade; one half-brother, Dave Crutchfield; and three half-sisters, Nellie Deckard, Helen Smith, and Thelma Edington.

She was retired employee of Bedford Excelsior Plant and was a member of the First Church of God.

Hughes – Della E. Hughes of Bedford, IN, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at her residence. Born on July 13, 1924, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William Oscar and Lillie (Childers) Strunk. She married Richard E. Hughes on March 18, 1950, and he died on January 2, 1976.

Surviving are two grandsons, David & Dennis Gregory of Bedford, IN, who have been her principal caregivers since 1989; one son, Bro. Bennie D. Sutherland of Dayton, OH; one daughter, Penny Johnson of Bedford, IN; one granddaughter, Cindy Wade of Bedford, IN, who was raised in her home; one brother, William Strunk of Bedford, IN; two other grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer & Matt Strunk; two sisters, Delmer Meadows and Lois Stannard; one step-brother, Charles Hardwick; and two grandchildren.

She was a seamstress and a homemaker and attended the Peerless Pentecostal Church.

Brewer – Kathleen Brewer of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at her residence. Born on April 30, 1938, in Louisville, KY, she was the daughter of Lofton and Mary (Riley) Moore She married John Brewer on August 7, 1993, in Lawrence County, IN, and he survives.

Also surviving are one son, Ian Hartsock of Denver, CO; one daughter, Colleen Riley of Bloomington, IN; one step-son, Ryan Brewer of Bloomington, IN; one step-daughter, Janie Yoon of Seattle, WA; one brother, William Moore of Coal City, IN; three grandchildren, and one step-grandson. She was preceded in death by one sister.

She was a registered nurse, working at Bloomington Hospital and Memorial Hospital in Seymour. She had also worked as a businesswoman and a model. She a graduate of Indiana State University, attended Unity Church in Bloomington and was a member of the Ideal Club and the Ladies of the Round Table.

Lewis – Howard J. Lewis of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, July 20, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on November 21, 1908, in Dubois County, he was the son of John and Jane (Baker) Lewis. He married Levedah Rollins on February 4, 1930, and she died August 15, 1991.

Surviving are four daughters: Mary Kay McAfee and Bedford, IN, Ada Jane Hoseman of Columbus, IN, Rosamond Oswald of Pensacola, FL, and Wilma Ann Beeson of Lynnville IN; one sister, Grace Quimby of Bloomfield, IN; eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by eight sisters, two brothers, and one great-grandson.

He was a retired from the Greene County Highway Department and was also a retired farmer. He was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church.

Services for Howard Lewis will be at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 23rd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Revs. Kenny Walden and Merla Craig officiating. Burial will follow in Silverville Missionary Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Sumner – Inez M Sumner of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on July 4, 1915, in Tunnelton, IN, she was the daughter of Urie V. and Anna (Runyon) Faris.

Surviving are one daughter, Martha Hildum of Mitchell, IN; one son, Dale Franklin Sumner of Indianapolis; three sisters: Helen Upchurch of Gainesville, NC; Edna Barber of Washington, and Annalee Lynch of Brainerd, MN; two brothers, Urie Junior Faris of Connersville, IN, and James Faris of Bloomington, IN; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Morris Faris; and two sisters, Mary Campbell and Naoma Gettinger.

She was a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church, where she served as pianist for twenty-five years, and was a 1933 graduate of Oaktown High School.

Arnold – Betty Rose Arnold of Seymour, IN, formerly of Bedford and Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at the Bloomington Hospital. Born on June 28 1943, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of George and Juanita (Owens) Gratzer.

Surviving are one son, Barry Brooking of Seymour, IN; one daughter, Cindy Brooking of Seymour, IN; her mother and step-father, Glen and Juanita Sykes of Bedford, IN; four brothers: Charles Gratzer of Rushville, IN, Tony Sykes of Greenwood, IN, Steve and Don Gratzer, both of Bedford, IN; one sister, Donna Hawkins of Bedford, IN; her maternal grandmother, Mabel DeFord of Bedford, IN; five step-sons: Eddie Arnold of Mitchell, IN, David Arnold of Florida, Tim Arnold of Texas, and Scott and Brian Arnold, both of Bedford, IN; one step-daughter, Julia Mann of Russiaville, IN; two grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and one aunt and uncle. She was preceded in death by her father.

She retired from General Motors in Bedford. She was a member of the Gulletts Creek Baptist Church, Eagles Lodge, UAW Local #440, and was an avid bowler.

Services for Betty Arnold will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, July 21st, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. David Ferry officiating. The body will be cremated. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Edington – Eldred F. Edington of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was born on August 12, 1915, in Tennessee. She married Guy Edington in November, 1937, and he survives.

Also surviving are one son, Dr. Dodd Edington of Bedford, IN; one sister, Elva Hayden of Dallas, TX; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Kimberly Gale Edington.

She was a homemaker and a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Services for Eldred Edington will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 22nd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Alan Reed officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Mellinger – William R. "Dutch" Mellinger of Bedford, IN, died Monday, July 27, 2000, at Community Hospital in Kokomo, IN. Born on July 27, 1925, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of William and Ella (Stotts) Mellinger. He married Russellena (Bobbie) Dawson on August 15, 1947, and she survives.

Other survivors are two sons, Jack L. Mellinger of Kokomo, IN, and William R. Mellinger of Dayton, OH; one sister, Marjorie Ray of Bedford, IN; two granddaughters, and one grandson.

A graduate of Indiana University with a degree in business, he was retired from General Motors. He was a member of and a former deacon in the First Presbyterian Church, and was a life member of American Legion Gillen Post # 33, where he had served as a past commander and was active on the funeral detail and bingo committee. He also held memberships in Bedford Elks Lodge #826, Bedford Lodge #14 F&AM, La-Or-Ma Shrine Club, Voiture #1192 of 40 & 8, and was an avid sports fan and golfer.

Services for William Mellinger will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Dr. Steve Braden officiating. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by member of the American Legion Gillen Post #33 of Bedford.. Skeen – Harry W. Skeen of Bedford, IN, formerly of Williams, IN, died Monday, July 27, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 10, 1926, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of James and Nellie (Sears) Skeen. He married Doris Walker on May 15, 1948, and she died December 16, 1979.

He was preceded in death by one son, Timmy Skeen; one sister, Edith Skeen; and two brothers, Harold and Roy Skeen.

He had worked at General Motors and was a member of the U.A.W. Local #440. He was a member of the Lions Club and the First United Methodist Church.

Kinser – Oleta "Cotton" Kinser of Tampa, FL, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at University Community Hospital in Tampa. Born on November 25, 1919, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Robert and Truly (LuAllen) Wilson. She married Chester Kinser, and he died June 2, 1970.

Surviving are one son, Bernie Kinser of Tampa, FL; two daughters, Phyllis LeMaster of Tampa, FL and Rose Ann Pennington of Indianapolis, IN; one brother, Harry Wilson of Bloomington, IN; one sister, Betty Mellon of Sellersburg, IN; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Wilson.

She was a machinist at Ertels Manufacturing in Indianapolis for thirty years, retiring in 1982. She was of Methodist faith.

Thomas – H. Christine Thomas of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, July 16, 2000, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on February 16, 1915, in Chaplin, KY, she was the daughter of William J. and Dora M. (Carey) Terrell. She married Rolla Athol Thomas on November 26, 1936,, and he died September 21, 1990.

Surviving are one daughter, Gail Richards of Bedford, IN; two sons, Rolla "Buddy" and Steven Lee Thomas, both of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Katherine Fricke of Escondido, CA; ten grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers: Willard H., James, Robert, and Levi Terrell; and five sisters: Margaret Barnard, Lurline Cooper, Martha Terrell, and two in infancy.

She was a homemaker and a former owner of Goldie's Snack Shop. She was a member and past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star No. 503, Spring Mill Homemakers Club and Phi Beta Psi sorority. She was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

Lashlee – Virginia L. Lashlee of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at her residence. Born on October 28 1925, in Malvern, AR, she was the daughter of Albert and Ethel (Cook) Burton. She married Billie B. "Red" Lashlee on October 2, 1939, and he died December 20, 1987.

Surviving are two sons, Billy Jack Lashlee of Mitchell, IN, and Bob Burton Lashlee of Kokomo, IN; one sister, Blanche Ruth Gilbert of Malvern, AR; one brother, Guy Leon Burton of Eufaula, OK; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mable Bailey.

Russell – Cora Marie Russell of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, July 14, 2000, at her residence. Born on November 19, 1922, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Charlie and Cora (Little) Wagoner. She married Noble Addison Russell on October 29, 1938, and he survives.

Also surviving are five sons: Kenneth Ray Russell of Orleans, IN, William David Russell, Steven Edward Russell, and James Charles Russell, all of Mitchell, IN, and Michael Wayne Russell of Bedford, IN; three daughters: Alice Marie Colins of Orleans, IN, Shirley Ann Cooper of Mitchell, IN, and Barbara Sue Nicholson of Bedford, IN; one brothers, Louis Wagoner of Mitchell, IN; twenty-two grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by three sons, Donald Joseph, Noble Leroy, and Jeffery Dean Russell; one daughter, Peggy Jane Russell; two sisters, Helen Wilfong and Dorothy Henderson; and one brother, Leland Wagoner.

Blake – Deanna Esther Cooper Early Blake of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at her residence. Born on April 23, 1939, in Huron, IN, she was the daughter of Carl and Lucille (Reynolds) Cooper. She married Marvin Early on April 29, 1954. She next married George Blake on July 24, 1972, and he survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Marvin Early, Jr. of Lawrenceville, IL, and Ron Early of Mitchell, IN; three daughters: Elaine Wright of Lawrenceville, IL, Esther Hamilton and Deanna Stephens, both of Mitchell, IN; her mother, Lucille Wood of Mitchell, IN; five step-sons: James Blake of Florida, Henry Blake of Oolitic, IN, Joe Blake of Medora, IN, Albert Blake and Guy Blake, both of Mitchell, IN; two step-daughters, Peggy Davis and Ann Dotts, both of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Larry Cooper of Kentucky and Ron Cooper of Mitchell, IN; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-six step-grandchildren, and twenty-three step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; two brother, Carl Lee and Floyd Cooper; and one grandchildren.

Edmonson – Phillip E. Edmonson of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on April 15, 1928, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Samuel Earl and Florence (McGrue) Edmonson. He married Betty Lou Russell, and she died June 10, 2000.

Surviving are four sons: Duane Edmonson, Jeffrey Edmonson, and William Edmonson, all of Mitchell, IN, and Anthony Edmonson of Morganton, NC; one daughter, Dorothy Sanders of McKeesport , PA; two sisters, Pearl Florence Knight of Mitchell, IN, and Lagatha Joyce Baker of Scottsburg, IN; one half-brother, Rodney Edmonson of Washington State; two half-sisters, Patty Porter and Penny Grubb, both of Mitchell, IN; fourteen grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; one brother, William Raymond Edmonson; one sister, Leona June Russell; one grandson, and three great-grandchildren.

He was a retired employee of Lehigh Portland Cement Company and a member of the First Church of God.

Flynn – Hansel Flynn of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at his residence. Born on March 13, 1915, in Lawrence County, IN, he was son of John L. and Edna (Hollers) Flynn. He married Barbara Ruth Kirkman, and she died February 14, 1974.

Surviving are one daughter, Vicki Goodlett of Bedford, IN; two sons, Rick Flynn of Bedford, IN, and John Richard Flynn of Bloomington, IN; three brothers, Larry Flynn of Bloomfield, IN, Harold Flynn of MA, and Howard Flynn of Indianapolis; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He worked for sixty years in bartending and bar ownership, the former owner of Green Mill Bar and Sportsman's Bar. He was of the Baptist faith and was a life member of Bedford Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, and Eagles Lodge, and member of Otis Park Men's Golf League and an avid golfer.

Kern – Lela Catherine Kern of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on September 6, 1914, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of William C. and Lottie A. (Boyd) Babb. She married Carl G. Kern on June 1, 1935, and he survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Judy Boling of Florida, and Linda Smith of Bedford, IN; one son, Jerry Kern of Georgia; and eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one step-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by three brothers: Kelsie, Norman, and Billy Babb; and one grandson, Brent Smith.

She was a homemaker and a member of Central Church of Christ.

Brinegar – Gladys M. Brinegar of Bedford, IN, died Monday, July 10, 2000, at Hospitality House. Born on May 9, 1901, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Edward and Mary Etta (Bailey) Brinegar.

Surviving are two sisters, Tryphena Hubbard of New Castle, IN, and Lucy Crum of Bloomington, IN; eleven nieces, including Florence Childers, who was her caregiver; and five nephews. She was preceded in death by six sisters: Maudelyn Roach, Etta Miller, Frances Chasteen, Alice Chasteen, Jenny Shipwash, and Juanita Jefferson; and three brothers, George, Quince, and James Brinegar.

She had worked at M. Fine & Sons Mfg. and was a graduate of Needmore High School.

Wheeler – Barbara Jane Wheeler of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on February 24, 1938, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Daniel and Eva (Umphress) Hudson. She married Lindy Wheeler on May 22, 1971, and he survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Lisa Wheeler, at home; four brothers: Robert and Edwin Hudson, both of Bedford, IN, Gerry Dean Hudson of Indianapolis, and Herschel Hudson of Albuquerque, NM. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Marvin and Myron Hudson.

She was a former beautician and attended the Heltonville Baptist Church.

Surviving are his former wife, Norma of Mitchell, IN; two sons, Dennis Grogan of Bedford, IN, and Keith Grogan of Mitchell, IN; four daughters: Viola Brown and Lisa Middleton, both of Mitchell, IN, Debbie Johnson of Bedford, IN, and Cathy Chapman of Oolitic, IN; his mother, Maggie Chastain of Bedford, IN; four brothers: Marvin, David, and Jackie Grogan, all of Bedford, IN, and Millard Grogan of Shoals, IN; five sisters: Louella Jones, Zelma Cole, and Imilda Lessig, all of Mitchell, IN, and Shirley Yaney and Naomi Sue McDaniels, both of Bedford, IN;sixteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, one aunt, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; step-father, Ray Chastain; two sister, Eva Oliver and Penny Grogan.

He worked for the Bedford Street Department and was a member of Moose Lodge #689 and Eagles Lodge #654.

Kruchten – Robert H. Kruchten of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on April 24, 1930, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of William and Norma (Hartman) Kruchten. He married Bonnie Hatfield on July 26, 1952, in Bedford, IN, and she survives.

Also surviving are one sister, Patricia Kruchten of Bedford, IN; one brother, Edward Kruchten of Fort Wayne, IN; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

He was a retired account executive of the Bedford Daily Times-Mail, a retired Master Sergeant serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, and a graduate of Bedford High School. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #33, Fraternal Order of Polie,, the Air Force Association, and was Past Exalted Ruler of Elks Lodge #82.

Spires – Debra Lynn Spires of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on October 9, 1956, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Robert Harold Spires and Shirley Ann (White) Swartz.

Surviving are one daughter, DeeAndra Lynn Shelton of Bedford, IN; one son, James Lee Borden of Bedford, IN; four sisters: Donna Jean May, Cathy Jo Baker, Stormi Ann Swartz, and Kristie June Nelson, all of Bedford, IN; six brothers: Tony Dale Spires of Texas, Danny Lee Spires of Texas, Robert Harold Spires, JR. of East Oolitic, IN, Ricky Dean Spires, Randy Scott Swartz, and Claude David Swartz, all of Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by one son, Steven Lee Borden, and one sister, Linda Lou Jamison.

Rhorer – Clifford G. Rhorer of Mitchell, IN, died Friday, July 7, 2000, at his residence. Born on May 20, 1928, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Lee H. and Maud (Spears) Rohrer.

Surviving are three sons: Clifford A. Rhorer of Oolitic, IN, Fredrick Rhorer of Indianapolis, and Michael Rhorer of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Susan Damon of Bloomington, IN; one brother, Fred Rhorer of Bedford, IN; one sister, Rachel Myers of Bloomington, IN; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Kenneth Rhorer, Harry Rhorer and Frank Rhorer; and one sister, Ruby Bodenhamer.

He had worked as a tool and die maker at United Technologies in Mitchell, retiring in 1991, was an Army veteran of World War II, and had served as a Mitchell city commissioner. He was a member of Mitchell Fraternal Order of Police.

Shelton – Kathy A. Shelton of Bedford, IN, died Friday, July 7, 2000, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on December 17, 1951, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Charles and Margie (Borden) Tincher. She married Steve Shelton on July 3, 1969, and he survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Stephanie Shelton of Bedford, IN; her father and step-mother, Charles and Edith Tincher of Bedford, IN; her step-father, Billie McLaughlin of Mitchell, IN; one brother, Mike Tincher of Cedar Lake, IN; two grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins, step-brothers, and step-sisters. She was preceded in death by her mother and her grandparents.

Fox – Clay A. Fox of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on March 15, 1905, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Martin and Nora (Miller) Fox. He married Mabel M. Edwards on August 24, 1935, and she died March 7, 2000.

Surviving are one son, Jimmie D. Fox of Mitchell, IN; one grandchild, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille Fox.

He was a retired employee of Carpenter Body Works and a member of Spice Valley Baptist Church.

Webb – Opal R. Webb of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at the Indiana University Medical Center. Born on September 4, 1923, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Stanley and Frances (Parker) Webb. He married Luella Walton on May 16, 1942, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Russell Webb of Bedford, IN, and Ronald G. Webb of Needmore, IN; one daughter, Marsha Enochs of Oolitic, IN; three brothers: Chester Webb and Leland Webb, both of Bedford, IN, and George Webb of Oolitic, IN; two sisters, Edith Mae Hackney and Violet Coyle, both of Bedford, IN; nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil and Everett Webb, and one half-brother, Ear Parker.

He was retired, after working in the limestone industry for fifty years, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in Africa and Italy. He was a member of the Oolitic church of Christ.

Born on March 16, 1910, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Albert Joseph and Amanda Jane (Conder) Smith. She married Everett Arthur on August 15, 1927, and he died in 1964.

Surviving are one daughter, Joyce Arthur Haywood of Bloomington, IN; one son, Everett Arthur Jr. of Springville, IN; one sister, Gladys Lewis of Clinton, IN; four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Arthur; five sisters: Delphia Polk, Sylvia Chasteen, Roxie Lee, Marie Flynn and twein sister Flora Krenke; one son and one daughter in infancy.

Baker – Georgiana Baker of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on March 5, 1933, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Benjamiin and Nina T. (Gipson) Tolliver. She married Gerald R. "Jerry" Baker on July 6, 1952, and he died March 11, 1999.

Surviving are one daughter, Jerri Lynn Stewart of Bedford IN; one son, Jay Baker of Greenwood, IN; two sisters, Mary Lois Brock and Dorothy Maxine Smedley, both of Bedford, IN; and two grandsons. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Sarah "Billie" McHugh and Rosetta, in infancy.

She retired from Crowders Drug Store and was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Services for Georgiana Baker will be at 10:00 Thursday, July 6th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Danny Goens officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Stapp – James W. Stapp of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on June 17, 1924, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Frank Bruner and Mary (Bell) Stapp. He married Jean Mundy on May 27, 1947, and she died August 2, 1995. He married Rowena Brammer on October 26, 1996, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Tim Stapp of Bloomfield, IN, and Scott Stapp of Albuquerque, NM; three sisters: June Van Cleave of Indianapolis, Maxine Carpenter of Phoenix, AZ, and Marilyn Wu of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and one brother, Frank Stapp of London, England (U.K.). He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife.

He was a retired machinist at E&M Tool Co. and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran serving in World War II. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church.

Services for James Stapp will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 6th, at the Free Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the Free Methodist Church.

Delpha – John P. Delpha of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at his residence. Born on September 30, 1915, in Oolitic, IN, he was the son of Henry and Mary (Belotti) Delpha. He married Mildred "Mid Haungs on April 29, 1949, and she survives.

Also surviving are three sons: John Paul Delpha of Spring, TX, Larry Delpha of Greenwood, IN, and James A. Delpha of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Harry Delpha of Oolitic, IN, and William Delpha of Trafalgar, IN; three sisters: Mable Lewis and Pauline Baker, both of Bedford, IN, and Eileen Wintergurst of Little Cincinnati, IN; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers: James "Jimmy", Louis, Robert, and Paul Delpha; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Delpha and Marge Christenbury.

He worked in security at Central Foundry, retiring in 1980 after thirty-three years of service, was a 1933 graduate of Oolitic High School, and a 1st Lieutenant in the Army during World War II. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus #1166, and the American Legion Gillen Post #33.

Services for John Delpha will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 5th, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Fr. Bernie Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery with military rites accorded by members of the American Legion Gillen Post #33.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, where the Knights of Columbus Rosary Service will be held at 6:30 p.m.
