10/31/99 Meadows – Mahlon Dean Meadows of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, October 31, 1999, at Vencor Hospital in Greenwood, IN. Born on December 11, 1934, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Mahlon V. and Delmer (Strunk) Meadows. Surviving are one brother, John Meadows of Oolitic, IN; one sister, Linda Hughes of Brownsville, TX; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a retired laborer and was of Pentecostal faith. There will be a graveside service for Mahlon Meadows at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 3rd,at the Patton Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Hughes officiating. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. 10/28/99 Sanders – Janice A. Sanders of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, October 28, 1999, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center. Born on November 13, 1936, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Carl W. and Mary (Craig) Cooper. She married Olin H. Kirkman on November 15, 1951. She later married Dale Sanders and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one daughter, Oletta Patton of Solsberry, IN; two sons, Buddy and Larry Kirkman, both of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren, and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one infant sister, Patricia Cooper. She had worked as a security officer in Indiana and Florida. Services for Janice Sanders will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 30th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Bob Kirkman officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Sloop – Mary Jean Sloop of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, October 28, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 29, 1922, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Ralph and Frances (Browning) Fish. She married Ralph "Gus" Sloop on January 26, 1944, and he died August 4, 1988. Surviving are one daughter, Becky Brady of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Micky Brooking and Nancy Brudnick, both of Bedford, IN; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Roxie Cummings Kern, and two brothers, Joe and Bill Fish. A graduate of Methodist Hospital Nursing School, she was a registered nurse and retired from Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church, Eastern Star No. 129, and Retired Nurses Association. There will be private graveside services for Mary Sloop at Cresthaven Memory Gardens. The Day & Carter Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements. There will be no visitation at the mortuary. 10/27/99 Ross – Warner Dale Ross of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, October 27, 1999, at the Westview Nursing and Rehab Center. Born on August 22, 1923, in Washington, IN, he was the son of Edward and Maggie (Taylor) Ross. He married Ruth Eggers on September 27, 1952, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Karen Sue Ross and Sheila Taylor, both of Bedford, IN; one brother, William Ross of Michigan; three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his one brother in infancy, John Edward Ross; and four sisters, Virginia Mathis, Martha Hill, Orris Perry, and Florence Stone. He was retired from the Naval Surface Center-Crane and was an Army veteran of World War II. Services for Warner Ross will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, October 31st, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Bro. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. 10/26/99 Huff – Mable Telene Huff of Bedford, IN, formerly of Avoca, IN, died Tuesday at the Bedford Nursing Center. Born on November 24, 1912, in Avoca, IN, she was the daughter of Arthur Lester and Josephine Kay (Massey) Turner. Surviving are one daughter, Peggy Tirey of Bedford, IN; four granddaughters; fifteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brother, Wendell and Lloyd Maxwell Turner; one sister, Mearlene Baxter; and one granddaughter. She was a stenographer and retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane. There will be a graveside service for Mable Huff at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 28th, at Hilltop Cemetery in Avoca with the Rev. Robert Kirkman officiating. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Chastain Funeral Home. 10/23/99 Guthrie – Hazel A. Guthrie of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, October 23, 1999, at the Hospitality House. Born on July 14, 1907, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Charles M. and Laura (Blake) Guthrie. Surviving are one sister, Marian Duncan of Bedford, IN; three nieces, two nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She worked for thirty years at Franklin's Drug Store and the Edgewood Clinic. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Services for Hazel Guthrie will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26th, at the Cresthaven Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Jon Lineback officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. There will be no visitation at the mortuary. 10/22/99 Connerly – Delma H. Connerly of Bedford, IN, formerly of Williams, IN, died Friday, October 22, 199, at the Hospitality House. Born on September 7, 1908, in Mount Olive (Martin County, IN), she was the daughter of Garrett and Elizabeth (Crane) Stroud. She married Jasper J. Connerly on December 19, 1923, and he died on January 5, 1978. Surviving are one son, Max Connerly of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Emil Dee Connerly in 1998 and Billy Dean Connerly in infancy; and two brothers, Arthur D. and Curtis Stroud. She was a homemaker and a member of the Williams Church of Christ. She had attended the Southland Church of Christ. Born on March 16, 1916, in Martinsville, IN, he was the son of Thomas and Grace (Norman) McCormick. He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Robert McCormick. He retired as a buyer and vice president of J.C. Perry Construction Co. in Indianapolis. A 1936 graduate of New Castle High School, he was also a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Services for Bill McCormick will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 26th, at the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernie Cox officiating. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery in New Castle. Friends may call from 7-8 p.m. Monday at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, at which time there will be a rosary service. Randolph – Ruby I. Randolph of East Oolitic, IN, died Friday, October 22, 1999, at the Hospitality House. Born on April 24, 1921, in East Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of Claude J. and Gertie (Ray) Hillenburg. She married Ernest Randolph, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one son, Larry E. Randolph of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Claude Hillenburg of Heltonville, IN, and Robert Hillenburg of East Oolitic, IN; one sister, Gretna Gilson of Bedford, IN; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She retired from M.Fines after 41 years of service. She attended the East Oolitic Community Church. Services for Ruby Randolph will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 25th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Millard Jones officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Sabatier – Maurice M. "Frenchie" Sabatier of Bloomington, IN, died Friday, October 22, 1999, at his residence. Born on April 4, 1914, in France, he was the son of Leon Maurice Marius and Palmyre Augustine Sabatier. He married Alice Stevens, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, David Sabatier of Bedford, IN, and Mike Sabatier of Falls Church, VA; two daughters, Carmelita Emberton of Morgantown, IN, and Romona Byrd of Martinsville, IN; two step-sons, David O. Williams of Bloomington, IN, and Timothy Hobart Williams of Florida; eleven grandchildren, and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, three step-brothers, and one grandchild. He was a retired city and state employee. He moved to the United States when he was five years old. He was an avid fan of IU sports, Nascar racing, and Jeff Gordon. Services for Maurice Sabatier were conducted Monday, October 25th at the Deremiah-Frye Mortuary with the Rev. Don English officiating. Burial followed in Needmore Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westside Assembly of God. 10/21/99 Barrett – Dale Patrick Barrett of Bloomington, IN, died Thursday, October 21, 1999, in Yellowwood State Forest in Brown County, IN. Born on July 17, 1973, in Batesville, IN, he was the son of Randy C. and Alice (Cass) Barrett. Surviving are his parents of Bloomington, IN; one sister, Stacey Bellush of Bedford, IN; his maternal grandparents, Emery and Dorothy Cass of Scottsburg, IN; and his paternal grandparents, Virgil and Ella Mae Barrett of Austin, IN. A 1992 graduate of Mitchell High School, he was a service manager for Penske Auto Center in Bloomington. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mitchell, Quail Hunters of America and Hunters Club of America. Services for Dale Barrett will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 25th, at the First Baptist Church in Mitchell, with Dr. Tom Fuller and Bro. Marty Sheckler officiating. Hostetter – Lucille Hostetter of Springville, IN, died Thursday, October 21, 1999, at her residence. Born on March 3, 1920, in Greene County, IN, she was the daughter of Vernie and Maude (Jackson) Hamilton. She married Murle F. Hostetter on February 17, 1940, and he died on May 22, 1999. Surviving are one son, Gary Hostetter of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Linda Chapman of Franklin, IN, and Lucy Clensy of Middletown, IN; three sisters, Golda Brazzel, Leon Pritchett, and Naomi Parkes, all of Oolitic, IN; two brothers, Oval Hamilton of Bloomington, IN, and Dale Hamilton of Springville, IN; ten grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Kay Hostetter; one brother, Verle Hamilton; and three sisters, Nellie Hatfield, Norma Saunders, and Mildred Hamilton. She was a homemaker and a member of the Owensburg Baptist Church. Dorsett of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, October 19, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 3, 1928, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Ralph and Louise (McDermed) Beasley. She married Paul Dorsett on April 29, 1945, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, Jack W. Dorsett of Nashville, IN; two daughters, Paula Dunlap and Debrah Kline, both of Bedford, IN; three brothers, Bill, Ben and Carl Cassidy, all of Bedford, IN; three sisters, Virginia Ray, Jeanette Nikirk, and Margret Brown, all of Bedford. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Joe Cassidy; one brother, James Cassidy; one sister, Joan Cassidy; and one grandson. She was a homemaker. Born on November 19, 1927, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ollie and Olive (McCart) Eager. She married Roy K. "Red" Tanksley on July 4, 1945, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, Terry Tanksley of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Joni Bradford of Mitchell, IN; her mother, Olive Eager of Mitchell, IN; three sisters: Juanita Terry and Wilma Miller, both of Mitchell, IN, and Charlotte Brown of Seymour, IN; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father. She was a medical assistant at the Edgewood Clinic and for a physician in Mitchell. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. She was an inactive member of Gamma Epsilon chapter of Tri Kappa and was a 1946 graduate of Mitchell High School. Born on July 4, 1958, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Ernest R. and Betty L. (Baldwin) Edwards. She married John R. Crane on August 12, 1994, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, Michael Dean Cox of Tulsa, OK; one daughter, Misty Dawn Sears of Tulsa, OK; her mother, Betty L. Edwards of Mitchell, IN; three step-sons: Jonathan Crane of Mitchell, IN, Scott Crane of Medora, IN, and Jeffery Crane of Indianapolis; two brothers: Monte Edwards of Brazil, IN, and Marty Edwards of Mitchell, IN; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father. She was an employee of Preferred Technical Group and was a member of Spice Valley Baptist Church. Born on July 13, 1924, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Virgil and Nellie (Hayes) Arney. She married Merle Mosier, and he survives. Also surviving are two sons, Layne Scholl of Katy, TX, and Leslie Scholl of Roanoke; and one daughter, Lisa Shore of Bloomington, IN. She was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur Arney. She was a homemaker. There will be a graveside service for Anah Mosier at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 21st, at Beech Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Merla Craig officiating. Simmons- Marcella "Kay" (Harrison) Simmons of Bedford, IN, formerly of Indianapolis, died Friday, October 15, 1999, in Bedford. Born on June 11, 1932, in Terre Haute, IN, she was the daughter of Leo and Clarice (Stevens) Harrison. She married Lews W. Simmons, and he survives. Also surviving are three sons, Michael, Kevin, and Patrick Butler; one daughter, Kelly Eubanks; one sister, Diane Chew; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. She was an insurance underwriter for 25 years and was a member of the American Business Women's Association and Kiwanis International of Cape Coral, FL. Webb of Bedford, IN, died Friday, October 15, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on July 14, 1927, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Claude J. and Gertie C. (Ray) Hillenburg. She married Oscar L. Webb on September 6, 1952, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, David Webb of Bedford, IN; three daughters: Carol Sproles, Linda Dawson, and Sandy Webb, all of Bedford, IN; two brothers: Claude L. Hillenburg of Heltonville, IN, and Robert C. Hillenburg of East Oolitic, IN; two sisters: Gretna Gilson of Bedford, IN, and Ruby Randolph of East Oolitic, IN; five grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lillian Fults and Moneva Davis; and one brother, Earl Hillenburg. She was a homemaker and a member of the Free Methodist Church. Lessig of Weatherford, TX, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, October 14, 1999, in Texas. Born on December 31, 1907, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of John A. and Nancy Elizabeth (Johnson) Harding. She married Lemon Lessig on May 19, 1936, and he preceded her in death on April 19, 1965. Surviving are one son, Wilbur Lessig of Weatherford, TX; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, six brothers, and four sisters. She retired as a tailor in 1978, having worked at the Toggery in Bedford and at Lessig Tailor Shop since 1967. She was a member of the Erie United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for 21 years and a conference delegate for 25 years, and she was a member of the WSCS. Troyer of Williams, IN, died Tuesday, October 12, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on December 31, 1945, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Robert Crowe and Annie (Beecham) Wallace. She married Roger Troyer, and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Annette M. Crowe of Lexington, KY, and Christine Crowe of Indianapolis; two sons, Robert Wagner of North Carolina and Richard Troyer of Orleans, IN; step-mother Larine Crowe of Bedford, IN; and thirteen grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father; one daughter, Jennie England; and an infant brother, Bobby Crowe. She was a homemaker and attended Bethel Baptist Church in Williams. Bluff of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, October 10, 1999, at the Hospitality House. Born on November 27, 1898, in Martin County, IN, she was the daughter of John S. and Mary Elizabeth (Holland) Harp. She married Thomas W. Oliver, Claude Batman, and Edward C. Bluff, each of whom preceded her in death. Surviving are two step-sons, William "Bill" Batman of Vincennes, IN, and Edward R. Bluff of Sparta, IL; one step-daughter, Esther Brasher of Bellville, IL; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; and one daughter-in-law, Ruth Oliver of Bedford, IN, who was her caregiver. She was preceded in death by one son, Loren Oliver; one step-daughter, Idas Uppfalt; one sister, Retta Inman; and six brothers, Fred, Charlie, Chancey, Harry, Elza, and George Harp. She was retired from M. Fine & Sons, and was a member of the Free Methodist Church, the Ladies Missionary Fellowship of the church, and the Royal Neighbors of America. Girdley Sr., of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, October 10, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Center. Born on May 10, 1905, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Marshall and Carrie (Fish) Girdley. He married Pauline Brown on June 6, 1942, and she survives. Also surviving are one son, Paul W. Girdley Jr. of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Deanna K. Dyer and Helen Elaine England, both of Worthington, IN; one sister, Betty L. Miller of Bedford, IN; seven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, one in infancy. He worked for fifty years as an area stonecutter, including Indiana Limestone Co, and was a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Journeyman Stone Cutters of Indiana union. Services for Paul Girdley will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 13th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Born on June 21, 1916, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Ralph and Stella (Miller) Smith. Surviving are two sons, Jerald L. Smith of Mitchell, IN, and Philip M. Smith of Norman, IN; and one daughter, Jennie Lee Chastain of Mitchell, IN. He had driven a school bus for Mitchell Community Schools for 24 years and was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Spice Valley Baptist Church. There will be a graveside service at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 12th, at the Spice Valley Cemetery with the Rev. Lewis Williams officiating. Born on October 8, 1939, in Bono, IN, she was the daughter of Chris and Anna L. (Hamilton) Hoggatt. She married Willard H. Baker on September 15, 1972, and he died January 3, 1986. Surviving are one brother, Edwin Hoggatt of Martinsville, IN, and one sister, Nona McFarland of Peru, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brother: Elmer, John, and Noble Hoggatt; and one sister, Mary Holt. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ. Box 64, Bedford, IN 47421. 10/96/99 Swalls – Amanda Lee Swalls of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, October 6, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born on August 13, 1990, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Jeff and Cheri (Frances) Swalls. Surviving with her parents are one sister, Chelsea Swalls, at home; maternal grandparents, James and Jeanette Tidd of Lewis, IN; paternal grandparents, the Rev. James D. and Ginger Swalls of Hymera, IN; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was a third-grade student at Shawswick Elementary School and was active in the Brownie Troop No. 211, Girls Club, where she played basketball, and studied gymnastics at Tumbling Tots in Bedford. During her first and second grade years, she received the Crowder Award, as well as awards for reading, spelling, and math. As a hobby she loved to bake. She attended Mundell Christian Church. Services for Amanda Swalls will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct 12th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. John Wisley officiating. Burial will follow in Leatherwood Christian Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the mortuary. The family extends an invitation to a dinner at the Bedford Junior High School gymnasium following the services. Lambton of Bedford, IN, died Monday, October 4, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. She was born on June 8, 1906, in Kemmerer, WY. Surviving are three daughters: Madge Ballard and Shirley Hopkins, both of Leesburg, FL, and Marilyn Jacobsen of Boynton Beach, FL; one son, Gary Lambton of Bedford, IN; several grandchildren, including a grandson Kevin Jacobsen of Bedford, who was her caregiver; several great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Bennie R. Lambton; two daughters, Jeanne Hayworth and Lina Duncan; four brothers, Alford, Clifford, Dick, and Urie Gann; and three sisters, Faye Basham, May Hall, and Goldie Ware. Services for Erma Lambton will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 8th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service time Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. 10/02/99 Gonczy – Whitney Gonczy of Bedford, IN, formerly of Morocco, IN, died Saturday, October 2, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 14, 1965, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of warren and Sandra (Rytkonen) Hudson. She married Bob Gonczy on July 28, 1990, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, Bryce Hudson, at home; her parents, Warren and Sandra Hudson of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Kelly Shifflett and Stephanie Etheridge, both of Bedford, IN; paternal grandparents, Ted and Rachel Hudson of Bedford, IN; one nephew, five nieces, and seven cousins. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Marian and Wilfred "Whitey" Rytkonen and one brother, Timothy Scott Hudson. She was a secretary for the Parker Group in Bedford and was a consultant for Longaberger Baskets. She was the namesake for the Whitney Tool Co, which was founded by her grandfather, "Whitey" Rytkonen. She was a member of the Morocco Methodist Church. Services for Whitney Gonczy will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 6th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with Scott Armour officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wiley Youth Park Fund or to the Adopt a Student Program at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School. 10/01/99 Sorrells – William "Bill" Sorrells of Bedford, IN, died Friday, October 1, 1999, at the Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center in Indianapolis. Born on August 17, 1925, in Huron, IN, he was the son of Charles and Lola (Terrell) Sorrells. He married Naomi Ruth Brown on November 24, 1956, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters: Kelly Smith of Mitchell, IN, and LoTonia Baker of Avoca, IN; one son, Brian J. Sorrells of Bedford, IN; one brother, Romaine Sorrells of Bedford, IN; one sister, Eldean Moffitt of Bedford, IN; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Noble, Eddie and Laverne Sorrells; and two sisters, Kathleen King and Juanita Watts. He was a retired brick mason. A 1943 graduate of Huron High School, he was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Huron Church of God. Services for Bill Sorrells will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 4th, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Smoot officiating. Burial will follow in the Huron Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 25- and the Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107, Mitchell. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the service time Monday at the funeral home.
