08/31/99 Dixon – Dora Belle Dixon of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999, at her residence. Born on March 27, 1922, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Henry Doyle and Fern (Fountain) Wray. She married Jim Dixon on November 12, 1942, and he survives. Also surviving are three sons: John and Mike Dixon, both of Bedford, IN, and Gary Dixon of Springville, IN; one daughter, Jo Terry of Bedford, IN; one brother, Vernon Wray of Buddha, IN; two sisters, Elizabeth Duncan of Mitchell, IN, and Hettie Anderson of Bedford, IN; and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Crane, and one grandson. A registered nurse, she had worked at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the First Christian Church, the Ludeans, the Order of Eastern Star, Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary, Quarry Quilters, and the Indiana University Alumni Association. Services for Dora Belle Dixon will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Robert Dailey officiating. Burial will follow in Pinhook Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Rogers – Anna Lee Rogers of Bedford, IN, formerly of Bloomington, IN, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999, at her residence. Born on July 10, 1932, in Louisville, KY, she was the daughter of Edward Earl and Leotta (Cubert) West. She married William Coleman Rogers on October 7, 1952, and he died June 8, 1996. Surviving are three sons: Rick Rogers of Bedford, IN, Daniel Rogers of Bloomington, IN, and Johnny Rogers of Smithville, IN; one daughter, Sherry Walker of Spencer, IN; two brothers, Ed West of Clarksville, IN, and Richard Southern of Frankfort, KY; three sisters, Pat Anderson of West Branch, MI, Denise Robertson of Lawrenceburg, KY, and Debbie King of New Albany, IN; seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Stanley West. She was a homemaker and had worked for AT&T in Bloomington. Staggs – Frederick Michael Staggs St. of Oolitic, IN, died Tuesday, August 31, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born on February 21, 1939, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Alfred H. and Josephine E. (Oliver) Staggs. Surviving are one son, Frederick Michael Staggs Jr. of Indianapolis; two daughters, April McDonald of Indianapolis and Angie Staggs of Plainfield, IN; three brothers: Melvin "Dick" Staggs of Bedford, IN, Terry Joe Staggs of Indianapolis, and Kenny Staggs of Linton, IN; six sisters: Melvina Hestand of Indianapolis, Mary Beth Copeland of Arizona, Janie Worley of Oklahoma, Judy Gee of Sandborn, IN; Helen Kefler of Princeton, IN, and Kathy Gerts of Linton, IN; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Douglas, Gerald Edward, and Alfred Wayne Staggs. He was a construction worker and of Catholic faith. There will be a graveside service for Frederick Staggs at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 3rd, at Hillenburg Cemetery. Roberts of Tunica, MS, formerly of Oolitic, IN, died Monday, August 30, 1999 at Methodist South Hospital in Memphis, TN. Born on September 14, 1907, in Needmore, IN, she was the daughter of William J. "Jack" and Ollie Rebecca (Hayes) Clark. She married Clint Roberts in 1926 in Lawrence County, IN, and he died in July 1965. Surviving are one son, Jack C. Roberts of Tunica, MS; one grandson; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Ralph W. and Wayne Clark. She was vice president of Jack Roberts Chevrolet-Buick, Inc. in Tunica, MS, until she retired in 1983. She was a 1926 graduate of Oolitic High School and was an 80-year member of the Oolitic Baptist Church. Born on October 14, 1936, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Opal and Inice (Johnson) Grissom. Surviving are two daughters, Susan Thomas of Robbins Air Force Base in Georgia and Regina Alden of Elkhart, IN; one step-son, Lee Freed of Mitchell, IN; three sisters: a twin, Wanda Stevens, and Catherine Pridemore, both of Mitchell, IN, and Ruth Roberts of Pinellas Park, FL; one brother, Lloyd Grissom of Orleans, IN; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Loretta Grissom, Pauline Hardin, and Elsie Leatherman; and four brothers, Opal Jr., Car James, and Herbert Grissom. He had been employed at Regal Beloit and at Jack's Lounge. He was a 1955 graduate of Mitchell High School. He attended the Church of God. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Chastain Funeral Home. Pannell – Dorothy May Pannell of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, August 29, 1999, at the Hospitality House. Born on August 10, 1908, she was the daughter of Benton and Dora (Rice) Keith. She married Purlee Owen in 1928, and he died March 31, 1964. She married Everett Pannell in June, 1966, and he died July 5, 1986. Surviving are three step-daughters: Marilyn Mundy of Bedford, IN, Glenda Archer of Slidell, LA, and LaTona Bundy of French Lick, IN; three step-sons: Edward Pannell of Murfreesboro, TN, William Pannell of Guthrie, IN, and Everett Pannell Jr. of Hymera, IN; nine grandchildren, including Treva Carron who lived with her and was her primary caregiver; nine great grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Paul and Robert Owen: two step-daughters, Dorothy Pannell and Mary Frances Pannell; three brothers, and one sister. She was a licensed practical nurse, working at Dunn Hospital and Bloomington Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Bloomington Hospital and was a charter member of the Bedford First Church of the Nazarene, where she taught Sunday school for 60 years. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. 08/28/99 Woods – Connie Jean Woods of Mitchell, IN, died Saturday, August 28, 1999, at Vencor Indianapolis South in Greenwood. Born on March 13, 1944, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Robert L. and Betty (McCart) Dorsett. She married Bobby J. Woods on December 24, 1977, and he died in August, 1991. Surviving are three daughters: Alissa Briscoe of Orleans, IN, Le Ann Petit of Crane, IN, and Deann Stephens of Winslow, IN; her mother, Betty Cornwall of Mitchell, IN; three sisters: Sherry Henderson and Trudy Troutman, both of Mitchell, IN, and Maureen Pollack of Cherry Valley, CA; eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Robert S. Dorsett, on April 13, 1999. She was a retired electrical engineer technician at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107 Auxiliary. Jenkins of East Oolitic, IN, died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at her residence. Born on September 29, 1941, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Winfred Clyde and Edna Rose (Hawkins) George. She married John Jenkins on March 29, 1956, and he survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Dawn Edmiston of Chicago, IL; three step-daughters: Jill Lyons of Greencastle, and Jonetta Emmons and Jona Jenkins, both of Bedford, IN; one step-son, Jeff Jenkins of Lafayette, IN; three brothers: Ray Lee George of Bloomington, IN, Kenny George of East Oolitic, IN, and Alan George of Mitchell, IN; two sisters, Candace Davis of Mitchell, IN, and Linda Sims of Avoca, IN; one grandson, three step-grandsons, and two step-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Rickey George; and three sisters in infancy. She retired from RCA after 33 years and was formerly a waitress at Hobby's Inn. She recently owned and operated Ultimate Wigs and Ad-Ons. She was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1424, was president of the East Oolitic Community Association, and was instrumental in getting a grant for construction of a community building in East Oolitic, which will be named in her honor. Walker, Jr. of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, August 26, 1999, at Bloomington Hospital. Born on November 8, 1924, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Carl B. and Inez (Bryan) Walker, Sr. He married Betty J. Chastain, and she died on April 29, 1997. Surviving are one son, Dave Walker of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Paul Walker of Kokomo, IN, and Bryan Walker of Loogootee, IN; and two sisters, Ellen Williams of Mitchell, IN, and Sue Henderson of Orlando, FL. He worked as a department manager at the IGA in Bedford and was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9107 and the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post 250 in Mitchell. Born on March 18, 1902, in Washington County, IN, she was the daughter of Christian and Nancy (Garrett) Bridgewater. She married Audrey M. Brown in 1923, and he died June 30, 1976. Surviving are three sons: Leroy and Lee Brown, both of Mitchell, IN, and Ivan "Dick" Brown of Spokane, WA; one daughter, Martha Bryant of Oklahoma City, OK; twenty grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Wendell and Darrell Brown; one daughter, Janice Tabor; and four brothers: Herbert, Sanky, Delvin, and Homer Bridgewater. Born on October 17, 1930, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Dick and Goldie Milligan. Surviving are two daughters, Betty Fox of Mitchell, IN, and Barbara McIntosh of Palatine, IL; three sisters: Brenda Luchauer, Lou Etta Sullivan and Shirley Young, all of Mitchell, IN; and one brother, Tom Milligan of Mitchell, IN; He was preceded in death by his parents. Born on February 19, 1944, in Orleans, IN, he was the son of Delbert and Estel M. (Elrod) Johnson. Surviving are one son, Lonnie Johnson of Mitchell, IN; two daughters, Lisa R. Reynolds and Andrea J. Johnson, both of Mitchell, IN; his mother, of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Dale Eugene Johnson of Amarillo, TX, and John Johnson of Fayetteville, IN; three sisters: Louise Wilson and Ruth Terry, both of Mitchell, IN, and Jeanette Terry of Bryantsville, IN; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; one sister, Roberta Foust; and one brother, Donald Johnson. He was employed at General Electric in Bloomington and was a graduate of Huron High School. Wilson – Melba Devoil Wilson of Paoli, IN, died Monday, August 23, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on March 19, 1915, in High Splint, KY, she was the daughter of Harvey Lee and Omega (Johnston) Creech. She married Elmo Wilson on December 26, 1934, and he died April 5, 1996. Surviving are one daughter, Judith Elaine Terry of Bedford, IN; two sons, Robert Keith Wilson of Apple Valley, CA, and Kenneth David Wilson of Warsaw, MO; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by seven brothers: Elmer, Nelson, Jack, Alonza, Custer, Sylvan, and Winfield Creech; and four sisters: Milie, Maxie, and Ada Marie Creech and Mossie Willis. She was a homemaker and a retired dairy farm manager. A 1930 graduate of Evarts High School in Evarts, KY, she was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and attended the First Church of God in Bedford. Born on April 3, 1936, in Solsberry, IN, he was the son of Ray A. and Louise (Marlin) Edington. He married Catherine Edington and she survives. Also surviving are one son, Jerry L. Edington of Florida; one daughter, Elizabeth A. Petrillo of Florida; his mother of Greene County, IN; one brother, James A. Edington of Greene County, IN; one sister, Mary E. Collins of Green County, IN; and four grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father. He worked as an electrical engineer with AT&T and Lucent Technologies in Indianapolis. A graduate of Oolitic High School and Purdue University, he was also a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Kappa Nu Association, Tau Beta Pi fraternity at Purdue, and was a volunteer in the woodworking shop at Conner Prairie. "Jack" Capps of Williams, IN, died Wednesday, August 18, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on February 3, 1921, in Willowshade, KY, he was the son of Corbett and Anna (Vibbert) Capps. He married Elizabeth Graefe on May 7, 1938, in Indianapolis, and she survives. Also surviving are one son, Steve Capps of Williams, IN; two daughters, Sandra Jellison of Indianapolis and Jacquelin Myers of Covington, GA; one sister, Neva Goodman of Indianapolis; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters. He worked at Goff Refrigeration and was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Marines. Rutter – Rose Juanita Rutter of Bedford, IN, died Wednesday, August 18, 1999, at the Westview Nursing and Rehab Center. Born on August 19, 1922, in Rose Hill, KY, she was the daughter of Dillard and Anna K. (McGlone) Brown. She married Fred A. Rutter on September 8, 1944, and he survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Leah K. Clinton of Mitchell, IN; two sons, David L. Rutter of Valparaiso, IN, and John S. Rutter of Charleston, SC; one sister, Shirley Sherwood of Lawrenceburg, KY; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Don Brown. She was a homemaker and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Born on April 22, 1910, in Mitchell, IN, he was the son of Martin and Lucinda (Pemberton) Holt. He married Elzora Pate on April 18, 1931, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Virgil Holt, Jr. of Bushnell, FL, and Robert Holt, address unavailable; two daughters, Betty Bush of Seymour, IN, and Sharon Haley of French Lick, IN; one brother, Harry Holt of Mitchell, IN; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, David Holt; two daughters, Norma Taflinger and Barbara Young; five brothers, and three sisters. He had been a construction worker. Born on October 22, 1922, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Merle and Gertrude (Inman) Phillips. He was formerly married to Helen Spoonmore and Juanita Lee. Surviving are two sons, Jack Lee Phillips of Owensburg, IN, and Larry L. Phillips of Springville, IN; two daughters, Angela Cowell of Solsberry, IN, and Amanda Evans of Orleans, IN; one sister,m Ruth Reynolds of Louisville, KY; thirteen grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two grandsons. He retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Springville United Methodist Church. Services for Frank Phillips will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 18th, at the Crossroads Community Church with Kevin Giggy and the Rev. Carrico of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, August 15, 1999, at her residence. Born on April 12, 1933, she was the daughter of Bruce and Lena (Bowers) Brown. She married James L. Carrico on April 28, 1956, and he died on May 24, 1998. Surviving are one son, James B. Carrico of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Michelle Johnson and Stephanie Lawson, both of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Nancy Wade of Columbus, IN, and Peggy Greene of Southport, IN; nine grandchildren, and great-grandchild. She retired from the Naval Surface Warfare-Crane and was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 826, Bedford. There will be private services for Patricia Carrico at a later date. Born on March 31, 1926, in Cawood, KY, she was the daughter of George and Blanche (Quearry) Thomas. She married Robert C. Sherrill, and he died in 1998. Surviving are two sons, Thomas Pettitt of Plainfield, IN, and Kenneth Pettitt; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Aaron "Benny" Thomas. She was a homemaker and was of the Protestant faith. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Oolitic and the American Legion Gillen Post Auxiliary. Born on January 5, 1928, in Marianna, PA, she was the daughter of James Gordon and Ula Martha Ellen (Rumer) Perry. She married Homer DeWayne Erhart and he died on November 14, 1986. Surviving are one daughter, Pam Blevins of Bedford, IN; one son, Chick DeWayne Erhart of Williams, IN; one step-daughter, Janice Hostetler of Lafayette, IN; one sister, Marguerite Martin of Straughn, IN; five grandchildren, two step0grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James Garland and George Gilbert Perry; and one sister, Lucretia Kreps. She worked as a computer specialist for the civil service until her retirement. She was a member of the Old Union Church and a former member of the Women's Auxiliary at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Sage of Mitchell, IN, formerly of Orleans, IN, died Tuesday, August 10, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on August 19, 1909, in Layton, PA, she was the daughter of James H. and Grace Mae (Tucker) Smith. She married Carl R. Sage in 1930, and he survives. Active in the Boy Scouts, he received the Silver Beaver award for adult leadership, the district award of merit and the General Motors award for excellence in community activities. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 25 years. He was a heavy equipment operator with Oolitic Ground Limestone and Fred Beyers Contracting. He retired in 1991. He was of Protestant faith.
