05/31/99

Carmichael – Shirley K. Carmichael of Springville, IN, died Monday, May 31, 1999, at the Bloomington Hospital. Born on February 12, 1951, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Maurice and Rosemary (Gordon) Graves. She first married James Long. She later married Wesley Carmichael, and he survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Tessa M. and Camie D. Long, both of Bedford, IN; one brother, Terry Gordon Graves of Bedford, IN; one sister, Sandy Rose Arthur of Norman, IN; one step-son, Bret Carmichael of Springville, IN; two granddaughters, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Patsy Dee McFadden.

She was a former administrative assistant at the Times-Mail, worked for Bedford Mayor John Williams, at the Bloomington Convalescent Center, and as a travel agent at Carlson Wagonlit Travel Agency. She was a 1979 graduate of Needmore High School and attended Guthrie Christian Church.

Services or Shirley Carmichael will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 3rd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Lyman Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Flynn – Joseph Allen Flynn of Mooresville, IN, died Monday, May 31, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on April 27, 1929, in Lawrence County (Pinhook Community), IN, he was the son of Wilford and Susan L. (Allen) Winegar Flynn. He married Buelah L. James, and she died September 27, 1987.

Surviving are one son, David Allen Flynn of Mooresville, IN; one daughter, Kathy Jo Paul of Virginia; one sister, Wyoma Flynn Freeman of Indianapolis; his step-mother, Geneva Ruth Flynn of Bedford, IN; two half-sisters, Carolyn Gould of Bedford, IN, and Sharon Griffin of Wichita, KS; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Floyd Louis Flynn.

He retired as a lieutenant from the Indiana State Police after twenty years of service in Indianapolis. He was a farmer, a 1947 graduate of Bedford High School, and a Marine veteran of the Korean War.

Goldsby – Gladys M. Goldsby of Bedford, IN, died Monday, May 31, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on October 7, 1925, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Elza and Oleta Fern (Hudson) Henderson. She married Woodrow "Woody" Goldsby in 1941, and he died in 1994.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda Wells of Bedford, IN, and Susan Jenkins of Clarksville, IN; one brother, Gordon Henderson of Bedford, IN; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Teresa Stinson in 1998; one sister, Grace Bugh, and one grandson.

She was retired from General Motors in 1979. She was a member of the United Auto Workers Local No. 440 and the Dive Christian Church.

Services for Gladys Goldsby will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 3rd, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Steve Goens and Johnny Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Shirley – Virginia Mae Shirley of Bedford, IN, died Monday, May 31, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on May 9, 1916, in Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of William and Louisa Jessie (Brown) Hall. She married Charles L. Shirley on January 28, 1939, and he died October 1, 1977.

Surviving are four daughters: Judy Gerkin of Montgomery, IN, Ruby Tuell, Carolyn Wessell, and Betty Goen, all of Bedford, IN; three sons, William G. Clyde L. and Donald Shirley, all of Bedford, IN; one step-daughter, Doris Duncan of Bedford, IN; one sister, Thelma Lynn of Bedford, IN; twenty-seven grandchildren, fifty-two great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Crawford; one step-daughter, Georgia VanMeter; three step-sons, Gene, Harold, and Jim Shirley; one brother, Richard Hall; and one granddaughter.

She was a retired cook at Spring Mill State Park and a 1935 graduate of Oolitic High School. She was a member of new union Christian Church.

Services for Virginia Shirley will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 2nd, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. David Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow in Carlton Cemetery in Buddha. Voorhies – Clara Bessie Voorhies of Scottsville, KY, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Cal Turner Extended Care in Scottsville. Born on May 15, 1915, in Green County, IN, she was the daughter of William and Dolly (Arthur) Reed. She married Ernie Voorhies on June 3, 1931, and he died March 13, 1967.

Surviving are five daughters: Juanita Baker of Oolitic, IN, Helen Kent, Margaret York, and Janet Schmidt, all of Mitchell, IN, and Mary Baker of Scottsville, KY; four sons: George Voorhies of Albertsville, AL, Dale Voorhies of Crown Point, IN, Estel Voorhies of Mitchell, IN, and Orval Voorhies of Lake Village, IN; five sisters: Mae Voorhies of Springville, IN, Maxine Eastern and Alberta Allen, both of Bloomington, IN, Alice Harris of Bloomfield, IN, and Ola Fault of Worthington, IN; two brothers, Buddy Reed of Alabama and Everett Redd of Linton, IN; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Dexter Voorhies; two sisters, Roberta England and Ora Harris; and two brothers, Albert and Lloyd Reed.

Services for Clara Voorhies will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 2nd, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. David Grace officiating. Burial will follow in Springville West Cemetery. Wilson – Madeline Wilson of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 30, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on February 23, 1927, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Charles F. and Naomi Edna (Hood) Peel. She married Fred Wilson Sr. and he survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Donna Honeycutt of Indianapolis; two step-sons, Fred Wilson Jr of New York and Charlie Wilson of Silverville, IN; three sisters, Mellia McNew of Mesa, AZ, Vera Figg of Michigan and Lois Allen of Bedford, IN; and one brother,Edward Peel of San Francisco, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents; one step-son, Robert Wilson; one brother, Charles Peel; and one sister, Mercedes Peel.

She was a homemaker.

A graveside service for Madeline Wilson will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 8th, at Green Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Reed Beard officiating. The Day & Carter Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. There will be no service or visitation at the mortuary.

Brinson – Clarise F. Brinson of Bedford, IN, formerly of Buddha, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on November 25, 1907, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of A. Clarence and Sadie (Hubbard) Harris. She married Jacob Lester Fishel and he died in 1970. She then married Avel Brinson, and he died in 1976.

Surviving are one daughter, Marjorie East Furguson of Bedford, IN; two sons, Dale Fishel of Irving, TX, and Dean Fishel of Hatfield, IN; one step-daughter, Deloris McAlhaney of Lawrence County, IN; four grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands; one step-son, Wayne Brinson; one sister, Florence Butler; one brother, Pete Harris; and one step-brother, Claude Fiddler.

She had worked at Reliance Manufacturing and as an aide at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the White River Baptist Church and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She was a former member of the Indiana Farm Bureau, the DAV Commanders Club, the Pythian Sisters and Buddha Ladies Aid.

Services for Clarise Brinson will be at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, May 30th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Mike Feliciano officiating. Burial will follow in White River Baptist Church Cemetery in Buddha. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service time Sunday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Cunningham – Charlie Cunningham of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at his residence. Born on May 30, 1931, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of William Henry and Lula Ellen (Hillenberg) Cunningham. He married Virginia Fender and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Charles Anthony Cunningham of Elkhart, IN, and Jerry David Cunningham of Fredericksburg, VA; one daughter, Kristie Collins of Bedford, IN; two sisters, Dorothy Borden and Kathleen Ratliff, both of Bedford, IN; eight grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was a retired group leader at RCA. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. He was also a member of the Bedford Eagles Lodge No. 654 and the Bedford Boat and Sportsman's Club.

Services for Charlie Cunningham will be at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 2nd, at the Cresthaven Mortuary. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at the mortuary. Bedford Eagles Lodge No. 654 memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Jones – Edward W. "Ted" Jones of Bloomington, IN, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at the Bloomington Hospital. Born on July 17, 1906, in Oolitic, IN, he was the son of Areli and Lena (Withman) Jones. He married Ruth Elizabeth Edwards on August 28, 1935, and she died October 17, 1968.

Surviving are one son, Stephen E. Jones of Mitchell, IN; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by former wives, Dagmar Riley and Beatrice Smalley; four sisters, Virginia Pless, Dorothy Rariden, Mary Elizabeth and Magdalene Swango; and two brothers, Theodore L. and William M. Jones.

He was a retired insurance and real estate agent, having founded Jones & Jones Agency in 1931. He was a World War II Army veteran and was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, American Association of Retired Persons, a life member and past exalted ruler of Bedford Elks Lodge, American Legion Post No. 128 of Waldport, OR, charter member of Bedford Board of Realtors, Lawrence County Horse Club and the Bedford Dance Club. He played basketball and football at Indiana University, where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, and also attended West Point Academy.

Services for "Ted" Jones will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 8th, at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ron Sacco officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with graveside military rites accorded by members of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the Day and Carter Mortuary.

Lavender – Frances M. Lavender of Reading, PA, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, May 29, 1999, at Reading Hospital and Medical Center in West Reading, PA. Born on August 30, 1916, she was the daughter of Albert and Goldie (Everhart) Underwood. She married Claude H. Lavender on December 19, 1933, and he died in December 1994.

Surviving are one son, Dennis R. Lavender of Reading, PA; one sister, Lula M. Winebrenner of Seabring, FL; four grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Claudia Lavender.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was of Baptist faith.

Carter – William "Bill"Carter of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at the Hospitality House. Born on September 5, 1921, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Jesse and Louise (Hostettler) Carter. He married Betty Jean Thorne on September 7, 1947, and she died on January 6, 1989. He then married Marjorie H. Short on May 6, 1990, and she died on November 20, 1998.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Vincel of Bedford, IN; two sons, Bradley Carter of Indianapolis and Douglas Carter of Oolitic, IN; one brother, J.T. Carter of Oolitic, IN; one sister, Elizabeth Little of Bedford, IN; and five grandchildren.

After thirty-one years of service, he retired in 1979 as assistant fire chief for the Bedford Fire Department. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a 50-year member of Bedford Lodge No. 14, F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, past monarch of Hajji Grotto, the Eagles and Elks Lodges, and a past president of the Lawrence County Art Association. Serving in World War II with the U.S. Army he became a prisoner of war in Switzerland, from which he escaped. He was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Services for William Carter will be at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, May 29th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Phil Thorne officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Friday and from 1 p.m. until the service time on Saturday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

LaRoche – Sharon "Jackie" LaRoche of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on November 23, 1944, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Derrell and Thelma (Johnson) Jackson.

Surviving are one daughter, Karen Sue Kirkman of Bedford, IN; her mother, Thelma Jackson of Bedford, IN; two brothers, David and Robert Jackson, both of Bedford, IN; three sisters, Mary Metzger of South Bend, IN, Fandora Lee and Dori Sullivan, both of Bedford, IN; and one granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Samuel Jackson.

A licensed practical nurse, she was employed at the Bedford Regional Medical Center and the White River Lodge. She was a 1962 graduate of Tunnelton High School.

Services for Sharon LaRoche will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 29th, at the Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Dean Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Talbott Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. until the service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Hodges – Helen M. Hodges of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, May 25, 1999, at her residence. Born on June 20, 1918, in Hymera, IN, she was the daughter of Oscar O. and Hattie (Brinkman) Woody. She married Willis L. Hodges on December 27, 1938, and he died April 15, 1995.

Surviving are four daughters: Juanita Brigman of Farmersburg, IN, Charlotte Gerkin and Carolyn Woolston, both of Mitchell, IN, and Sandra Nicholson of Paoli, IN; one son, Oscar Hodges of Orleans, IN; two brothers, Paul Woody of Tawa City, MI, and William Cundiff of Orleans, IN; sixteen grandchildren, and twenty-two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Horeb Baptist Church.

Services for Helen Hodges will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 28th, at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Lewis Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Orleans. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. until the service time Friday at the funeral home.

Louden – Mabel Ellen Louden of Indianapolis, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Monday, May 24, 1999, at North West Manor in Indianapolis. Born on February 8, 1907, in Greene County, IN, she was the daughter of Lowery and Ida (Spoonmore) Jackson. She married Porter Louden and he died in 1972.

Surviving are one daughter, Mary Lou Beck of Indianapolis; one sister, Mary Mikels of Harrodsburg, IN; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

She was a homemaker.

Bailey – Geneva Bailey of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 7, 119017, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Oscar "Polly" and Myrtle (Lockman) Davis. She married William H. Bailey, and he died March 7, 1984.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Sipes and Barbara Moore, both of Bedford, IN; one brother, William Davis of Bedford, IN; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Olive Davis, Mildred Chastain, and Ola Shaw; and one brother, Clyde Davis.

She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church. She was a lifetime member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsmen's Club.

Grubb – Gary Lane Grubb of Lawrence County, IN, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at his residence. Born on June 29, 1950, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Robert Grubb and Wanda Marlene (Hale) Stafford.

Surviving are three daughters, Carrie Ann, Jillian, and Amanda Grubb, all of West Virginia; his father and step-mother, Robert and Deloris Grubb of Bedford, IN; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother and grandparents, Floyd and Carrie Hale, and Homer and Pearl Grubb.

He had worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Chicago and was in the federal and military service for 21 years. He was a Marine veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the 3rd Marine Division in Quang-Tri Province Republic of South Vietnam during the 1968 offensive. He served as a Marine security guard at the American Embassy in Saigon, Vietnam and in Paris, France. He served on the USS Proteus. He received the Purple Hear, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Good Conduct Medal and other military medals. He was of Pentecostal faith.

Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by members of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. Myers – Merle E. Myers of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at his residence. Born on August 17, 1909, in Knox County, IN, he was the son of John and Edna (Swayze) Myers. He married Thelma L. Brewer on March 29, 1930, and she survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Wilma Fields of Mooresville, IN; one son, Charles Myers of Leesville, IN; two sisters, Dorothy Fitch of Mitchell, IN, and Pauline Shoults of Campbellsburg, IN; five grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, Delos, and Paul Myers.

He was a farmer in the Fort Ritner area.

Hostetter – Murle F. Hostetter of Springville, IN, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on August 15, 1918, in Greene County, IN, he was the son of Amos and Kizzie (Chaney) Hostetter. He married Lucille Hamilton on February 17, 1940, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Gary Hostetter of Bedford, IN; two daughters, Linda Chipman of Franklin, IN, and Lucy Clensy of Middletown, IN; ten grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Kay Hostetter, and eight brothers and sisters.

He was a retired co-owner and operator of Bedford Electrical Shop. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post 33 and was a Boy Scout leader. He was a member of the Owensburg Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and church moderator.

Godsey – Charles Beckham Godsey of Springville, IN, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Bedford Hospitality House. Born on March 12, 1910, in Wayne County, KY, he was the son of Milford and Abby (Neely) Godsey. He married Laura Alice Hall on December 26, 1936, and she died in 1963.

Surviving are one son, Charles Lee Godsey of Springville, IN; two daughters, Alice Marie Wilson and Judith Ann Stephenson, both of Bedford, IN; a niece, Paula Lucas of Pennsylvania, who was raised in the home; two brothers, Hobert Godsey of Springville, IN, and Ivan Godsey of Mitchell, IN; five sisters: Elsie Banks of Springville, IN, Alma Bottorff of Bedford, IN, Dorothy Hall of Oolitic, IN, Artie Workman and Ruby Atkins, both of Bloomfield, IN; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Sue Godsey; four brothers, Lowell Gilbert, Paul Robert, Hurstle, and Oliver Godsey; and one sister, Zelma Walker.

He was retired from farming and from General Motors Powertrain. He was a member of the Springville United Methodist Church, where he served a Sunday school superintendent for over forty years. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 440, holding several different offices for General Motors retirees, and was a former member of the Springville West Cemetery Board of Directors and a charter committee member of the Boy Scout Troop No. 343 of Springville.

Services for Charles Godsey will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 25th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Kevin Giggy officiating. Burial will follow in Springville West Cemetery. Ochs – Frances Ochs of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, May 22, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on June 30, 1906, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Henry and Sarah (Smith) Huff. She married Wendell Ochs on October 10, 1932, and he died in 1973.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including William and Evelyn Coulter and Mrs. Lois Taylor of Bedford, IN, Edwin Cahill of Mitchell, IN, and Mary Henson of Bloomington, IN. She was preceded in death by two half sisters and one half brother.

She was a homemaker.

Miller – Florence M. (Ritter) Miller of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on January 19, 1915, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of John A. and Lovie F. (Dotts) Coulter. She married Alfred Miller and he died on May 30, 1985.

Surviving are four sons: Robert G. and Ronald L. Ritter, both of Bedford, IN, John Ritter of Dayton, OH, and Larry D. Ritter of Indianapolis, IN; ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She had worked at McCormick's Creek State Park and at Sears. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church and the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority in Bloomington.

Wright – Margaret Wright of Mission, TX, formerly of Mitchell, IN, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at Edinburg Hospital in Edinburg, TX. Born on February 14, 1928, in Sour lake, TX, she was the daughter of Gilbert P. and Grace (Nelson) Wheeler. She married Charles Luther Wright on August 20, 1950, and he died December 27, 1997.

Surviving are three sons, David Wright of Auburn Heights, MI, Michael Wright of Waterford, MI, and Patrick Wright of Highland, MI; two daughters, Margaret Ann Bendeck of Mission, TX, and Nancy Webster of Mitchell, IN; three brothers, Vernon Wheeler of Colorado Springs, CO, Roy Wheeler of Idaho Falls, ID, and Robert Wheeeler of Mountain Home, AR; one sister, Ina Mae Shaw of Mountain Home, AR; thirteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Charles Gilbert Wright.

She was a former manager of the Spring Haven Motel.

Cody – Jesse H. Cody of Avoca, IN, formerly of Mitchell, IN, and Salem, IN, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at the Hospitality House in Bedford. Born on June 8, 1906, in Lee Valley, TN, he was the son of William McHenry and Ada Kathryn (Johnson) Cody. He married Velma Dora Ramsey on January 15, 1927, and she preceded him in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Nola Frazier of Avoca, IN, and Lois Cooper of Greenfield, IN; one son, Olin Cody of Logansport, IN; nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, Alvin, Carl, and Jerry Cody; one daughter, Sylvia Goldsby; four brothers, App, Frank, Andy and Roy Cody; and one sister, Amaline Riley.

He was a retired farmer and a member of the Southern Baptist Church.

Brewer – Annette L. Brewer of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at her residence. Born on February 13, 1963, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of James A. and Vickey (Webb) Beedie. She married Sheppard Brewer on November 1, 1991, and he survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Samantha Godsey, Kayla Brewer, and Cassandra Brewer, all at home; her parents of Bedford, IN; one brother, Troy Lane Beedie of Medora, IN; her maternal grandparents, Gene and Barbara Baker of Bedford, IN; her paternal grandmother, Eileen Beedie Jean of Mitchell, IN, her paternal step-grandfather, Hugh Jean of Mitchell, IN; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, James Leroy Godsey; one brother, Ted L. Beedie, on April 9, 1999; and her paternal grandfather, James Beedie, Sr.

She was a line inspector at General Electric in Bloomington. She was a member of the Dive Christian Church and attended Brownstown Church of the Nazarene.

Mitchell – Ruth E. Mitchell of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on July 11, 1920, in Bedford, IN, she was the daughter of Edward F. and Rowena C. (Fortner) Padgett. She married Oral Lewis Mitchell on May 7, 1938, and he died October 20, 1984.

Surviving are six daughters: Betty Gerkin of Texas, Sue Umphress and Janice Wheeler, both of Mitchell, IN, Barbara Moffatt of French Lick, IN, Judith Taylor of Fayetteville, IN, and Patty Taylor of Heltonville, IN; three brothers, Paul, Harold and Harry Padgett, all of Bedford, IN; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons, Jimmy Wayne, Roy Eugene, and Olin Dale Mitchell; one brother, William A. Padgett; and two granddaughters.

She had worked as an aide at the Bedford Nursing home and as a cook at Lonnie's Restaurant. She was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Senger – Monta Sue Senger of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at her residence. Born on April 30, 1951, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Ralph and Helen (Blackwell) Young. She married Walter "Butch" Young on March 1, 1975, and he survives.

Terrell – Curtis Hale Terrell of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at the Bloomington Hospital. Born on August 10, 1917, in Martin County, IN, he was the son of George W. and Florence (Chastain) Terrell. He married Lois Pearson Graves on March 25, 1966, and she survives.

Also surviving are three step-sons, Larry Lafferty of Bedford, IN, Stanley Lafferty of Paducah, KY, and Jack Graves of Greenwood, IN; one brother, Faye Terrell of Bedford, IN; and eleven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dale Terrell, and one sister, Ruth Johnson.

He was retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the First Assembly of God.

Buttz – Elaine Nancy Buttz of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at the Bloomington Hospital. Born on March 28, 1948, in Brantford, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Anita Whitworth. She married Charles "Chuck" Buttz on June 8, 1968, and he survives.

Also surviving are one son, 1st Lt. Scott Patrick Buttz of Camp Lejune, NC; one daughter, Amy Lynn Buttz of Houston, TX, and her parents of Mitchell, IN.

A 1966 graduate of Bedford High School, she received a bachelor's degree from Indiana State University and a master's degree in education from Indiana University in 1984. She had been a taught home economics at Burris Junior high School in Mitchell and for seventeen years she had been a consumer science teacher at Bedford Junior High School. She co-chaired the steering committee when Bedford Junior High School first achieved North Central Association accreditation. She was a member of the First Church of God, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Christian Education Board.

Canada – Nicholas Canada of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at his residence. Born on March 4, 1951, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Doyle Wayne Canada and Juanita (Marshall) Brown. He married Nelda Robbins on September 12, 1969, and she survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Carolyn Anderson of Bedford, IN, Crissy Canada and Julianne Canada, both at home; his mother, Juanita Brown of Bedford, IN; his father, Doyle Canada of Bloomington, IN; his step-father, William Brown of Bedford, IN; two brothers, Frank and Mike Canada, both of Bedford, IN; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kari Ann Canada in 1969, and one brother, Tommy Canada in 1973.

A 1969 graduate of Bedford High School, he graduated from Vincennes University and received a bachelor's degree from Indiana University and a master's degree from Indiana State University. Having served in the Air Force from 1970-1977, he served as an intelligence analyst in the Army Reserve from 1985-1986. He retired from the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane in 1997. He was a part-time insurance agent for Fiddler & Associates, IN and a driver for K&K Sales in Bloomington. He was a member of the Southland Church of Christ, a 1994 graduate of the Leadership Lawrence County, and served on the board of directors of the Limestone Girls Club and the board of directors of National Technological University in Fort Collins, CO.

Gehring – Eula Gehring of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Gehring on February 23, 1929, and he died December 27, 1985.

Surviving are four daughters, Wanda Mills and Evelyn Gratzer, both of Bedford, IN, Caroline Holmes of Columbus, IN, and Myra Allen of Myrtle Beach, SC; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Chilton – Robert Donald Chilton of Heltonville, IN, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born n March 23, 1930, in Martin County, IN, he was the son of Ralph and Bessie (Gerkin) Chilton. He married Eva Peters on May 23, 1958, and she survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Constance Bailey of Bedford, IN; three sons, Donald Wayne Chilton of Bedford, IN, and Robert Ronald "Ronnie" Chilton and Ralph Edward Chilton, both of Heltonville, IN; two brothers, James Chilton of Evansville, IN, and Walter Chilton of Indianapolis, IN; three sisters, Mary Evans and Patricia Thompson, both of Bedford, IN, and Roberta Crane of Springville, IN; and eight grandchildren.

He worked for Swifty Service Station, Bedford Cut Stone and Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane. He was a member of the Free Methodist Church, the White River Bowhunters Association, and the Indiana National Guard. He was a 1949 graduate of Bedford High School.

Taylor – Everett James Taylor of Bedford, IN, died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at the Westview Nursing 7 Rehab Center. Born on August 16, 1915, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Cleotis Everett and Nellie Geniva (McBride) Taylor. He married Willa Mearl Quackenbush on July 8, 1938, and she preceded him in death on October 2, 1986

Surviving are one son, E. Rodney Taylor of Florida; one daughter, A. Deanna (Taylor) Deckard of Bedford, IN; one brother, Homer L. Taylor of Garland, TX; four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was manager of the Merit Shoe Store for forty years and owned Taylor's Paint and Wallpaper Store. He was a member of the Central Church of Christ and served as elder and deacon there.

Surviving are one son, Robert Brown of Mitchell, IN; one step-daughter, Rita Lee of Seymour, IN; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Ruth Gilliatt.

Foster – Carola Foster of Mitchell, IN, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at her residence. Born on May 22, 1962, in Berlin, Germany, she was the daughter of Walter D. and Gerda (Plagemann) Chastain. She married Allen Foster on November 22, 1994, and he survives. Born on October 16, 1900, in Kentucky, she was the daughter of Joshua and Anna Elizabeth (Martin) Sidwell. She married George Barney Goode in 1919, and he died in 1967. Surviving are one son, Charles B. Goode of California; two daughters, Merle Brendler and Mildred Wood, both of California; fourteen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren, and thirteen great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, and two great-grandchildren.

She was a licensed practical nurse in California, Arizone, and Indiana. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

There will be a memorial service for Emma Goode at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 15th, at Cresthaven Memory Gardens, with burial following. There will be no calling hours. The Day & Carter Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Lynton – Roberta V. Lynton of Orleans, IN, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at Mitchell Manor Living & Rehab Center. Born on September 10, 1912, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of William Henry and Hazel (Isom) Sanders. She married Harley Lynton on April 30, 1930, and he died on March 3, 1983.

Surviving are one son, Gene Lynton of Orleans, IN; one daughter, Judy Marshall of Bellair, FL; two brothers, William I. Sanders of Paoli, IN, and Donald E. Sanders of Mitchell, IN; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Olivia Anderson, Mary Fisher, and Eunice Slosher.

A 1929 graduate of Mitchell High School, she was a homemaker and had been a florist at Busick Flower Shop. She was a member of the Mitchell First Baptist Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher, and was a member of the Baptist Missionary Society. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women and the Order of Eastern Star No. 352.

Services for Roberta Lynton will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 8th, at the First Baptist Church with the Revs. Robert Kirkman and Raymond Bunn officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Orleans. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Chastain Funeral Home and from 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Gammon – Sue J. Gammon of Mitchell, IN died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at her residence. Born on December 15, 1941, in Mitchell, IN, she was the daughter of Emery and Bessie (Harris) Baker. She married Robert Gammon on Dec. 24, 1959, and he survives.

Also surviving are two sons: Robert Gammon Jr. and Donald Brent Gammon, both of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Renaudia White of Marengo, IN; four brothers: Roger McCoy and Ronnie Pridemore, both of Mitchell,IN, Larry Dean Condiff of Georgia and Steve Baker of Bedford, IN; one sister, Kay Mallott of Bedford; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Betty Deweese and Mary Bundy.

She was a housewife and a member of Fairview Community Church, Shoals.

Services for Sue Gammon will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Haverly Mortuary with the Rev. Rick Christman officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until the service time Friday at the mortuary.

Woodard – Fred York Woodard of Bedford, IN, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on October 3, 1906, in Birmingham, AL, he was the son of Fred E. and Emma (York) Woodard. He married Anna Hardwick, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Terrance Woodard of Martinsville, IN; three step-sons: Robert Hardwick of Fountain, CO, Thomas Hardwick of Tampa,FL, and Jerry Hardwick. of Bedford, IN; one step-daughter, Darcust Charles Indianapolis; six grandchildren, and twelve step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Reba Smith, and one step-daughter, Ginger Packwood.

He was a retired machine shop operator in Martinsville.

Services for Fred Woodard will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 6th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Burial will follow in Hilltop Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service time Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Hackney – William B. Hackney of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at his residence. Born on July 15, 1923, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Orda and Goldie (Bault) Hackney. He married Herma Wittstock on August 6, 1947, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Bill and Ken Hackney, both of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Vicky Lynn Chamberlain of Greenwood, IN; one sister, Marilyn Guess of Orleans, IN; two brothers, Jack Hackney of Indianapolis, IN, and James Hackney of Folsom, LA; and five granddaughters. He was preceded in death by one son, Michael Hackney; two brothers, Bob and Ted Hackney; one half brother, Glenn Hackney; and one grandson.

He was a driver for Burton's and retired from A&H Truck Lines with 32 years of service. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 and was also a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 135. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church, where he served as a deacon for thirteen years.

Services for William Hackney will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 5th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Jim Burke officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Christian Church Cemetery with military rites accorded by the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33. Morgan – Wayne Morgan of Sarasota, FL, formerly of Bedford, IN, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Born on September 18, 1928, in Nashville, IN, he was the son of Harry E. and Anna Colleen (Hall) Morgan. He married Evelyn Soots on October 13, 1946, and she survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Garris L. Morgan of Springdale, IN, A.K. Morgan and Richard A. Morgan, both of Mooresville, IN; one sister, Eva Mae Potochick of Westland, MI; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, James C. Morgan.

He retired from General Motors Powertrain after thirty-six years of employment and was a member of UAW No. 440. He was a member of the Grace Full Gospel Church.

Services for Wayne Morgan will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 7th, at the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Brent O'Neal officiating. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-9 p.m. Thursday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.

Hudson – Myron T. Hudson of Bedford, IN, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at General Motors Powertrain. Born on September 20, 1932, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Daniel Franklin and Eva Mildred (Umphress) Hudson. He married Wilma White. He later married Dorothy A. Smith on December 21, 1957, and she died on April 14, 1986. He was preceded in death also by his parents and a brother, Marvin.

He was a die maker at General Motors Powertrain. A graduate of Heltonville High School, he was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of UAW Local No.. 440. He was a member of the Central Church of Christ.

Services for Myron Hudson will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 4th, at the Central Church of Christ with the Bro. Kenneth Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 1-9 p.m. Monday at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 11 a.m. until the service time on Tuesday at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.
