Indiana has the eighth-lowest median property taxes in the nation and the No. 3 most taxpayer friendly property-tax system in the country thanks in part to Senate Republicans' work to limit the growth of property taxes in recent years.
Why it matters: Hoosiers know how best to spend their own money, and maintaining a fiscally responsible government keeps more money in taxpayers' pockets.
While local officials are responsible for determining property-tax rates, I have supported recent efforts to reform our state's property-tax system including laws to:
Provide homeowners over $110 million in temporary property-tax relief in 2024;
Expand eligibility for the property-tax deduction and property-tax credit for senior-citizen homeowners;
Expand the definition of a homestead so more property is eligible for the 1% tax cap; and
Give counties options to limit how much property taxes increase for moderate-income homeowners who have lived in their home for 10 years.
