Eunice E. Gratzer

April 8, 1919 — May 29, 2012

Eunice Elizabeth (Hunter) Gratzer, 93, of Bedford, died at 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday at her residence.

Born April 8, 1919 in Heltonville, she was the daughter of Stanley and Mettie (Kimbrel) Hunter. She married John T. Gratzer on Dec. 29, 1945; he preceded her in death on March 2, 2006.

She was a graduate of Heltonville High School, and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Indiana University. She was a school teacher at Dive Elementary for nine years, and was a co-owner and office manager of Gratzer Monuments in Bedford, retiring in 1980.

She was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church.

Surviving are her two sons, Stanley J. (Evelyn) Gratzer and Paul S. (Debbie) Gratzer, all of Bedford; one daughter, Lucy (Jeff) Wray of Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, Melissa (David) Mitchell, Susan May (Cody) Campbell, Michelle Gratzer (PJ), and Michael Gratzer, all of Bedford, and Sarah, Hannah, and Rebekah, all of Indianapolis; and 11 great-grandchildren, Samantha Mitchell, Garrison Mitchell, Carter May, Sydney May, Luke, Elliott, Dean, Jonathon, Savannah, and Colton and Payton Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters, Elsie Hawkins and Helen Beyers; and one brother, Harold Hunter.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Hillcrest Christian Church, with Pastor Charlie Scott officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. on Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, and from 10–11 a.m. on Saturday, at Hillcrest Christian Church.

Rayjean Gerkin

Rayjean Gerkin, 48, of 1082 Sunny Acres Drive, Bedford, died at 12:40 a.m. on Monday at her residence.

Born May 1, 1964, in Fort Worth, Texas, she was the daughter of James A. and Judy (Ahrens) Veal. She married Danny J. Gerkin on Aug. 25, 1984, and he survives.

She was the store manager at Verizon in Bedford and a member of the First Church of God.

Survivors include her husband, Danny, of Bedford; her father, James, of Bedford; two sons, Toby Alan Gerkin and Taylor Austin Gerkin both at home; and one brother, James A. Veal of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the First Church of God in Bedford with Pastor Travis Inman officiating. Cremation will follow.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 11 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the First Church of God.

Carolyn A. Duncan

Carolyn A. Duncan, 80, of Bedford, died at 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Feb. 7, 1932, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Charles and Doreen (Payne) Cox. She was married to Murl Tyree and he preceded her in death in 1983. She later married Glenn Duncan in April 1988 and he survives.

She retired from General Motors after 30 years of service and was a volunteer with the women’s auxiliary at Bedford Medical Center.

She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and the Garden Club.

Survivors include her husband, Glenn, of Bedford; a son, Mike Tyree and wife Judy of Amory, Miss.; four daughters, Deanna Carlson and husband Joe of Elkhart, Cindy Dorsett and husband Randy of Bedford, and Becky McNeely and Sheryl Draus and husband Mike all of Elkhart; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Neil and Tom Cox, both of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, David Tyree; a brother, Sonny Cox; and a granddaughter, Erin Carlson.

We were blessed with Grandma Carolyn. She was given to us at a time most needed in our family. She held our family together and joined us together with a new one. We were always meant to be family through God’s plan. Her kindness, generosity and grace will be missed by us all.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Bill McKee officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the Day & Carter Mortuary and from 10 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the church.

Edward Anderson

March 10, 1948 — May 29, 2012

Edward L. Anderson, 64, of Mitchell, passed away at 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

One special angel was called home today. Edward Lee Anderson, friend to everyone and stranger to no one. Avid Coon hunter, full time mushroom hunter and all-around special man. His work was done here on earth so he went to help others on their journey.

Edward was the son of Stanley & Rosetta (Clemons) Anderson and devoted husband to Cathy (Arnold) Anderson. He was born on March 10, 1948, in Lawrence County and served in the United States Army, where he was decorated with two Purple Hearts following his tour in the Vietnam War.

He retired from Lehigh Cement Company in Mitchell after 38 years of service.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Leo, Leon and an infant brother.

He was a stepfather to Isaac Collins, Jeramie Arnold, Christy Vanscoy, and Stephanie McCameron. He was a grandfather of seven, and expectant great-grandfather of one. He has two sisters, Susie English and Christina Williams; one brother, Wayne Anderson; three nieces and four nephews.

Edward will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Memorial visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at Cresthaven Funeral Home, reflections of Edward’s life will be shared at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Beulah F. “Billie” Hill, 83, of Bedford, died at 5 a.m. on Tuesday at StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

Born May 16, 1929, in Pumpkin Center in Washington County, she was the daughter of Allen Albertson Sr. and Della (Watson) Albertson. She married Davis Hill in 1945 and he died in 1998.

She was a homemaker.

Surviving are two sons, Arthur Hill and Henry (Amy) Hill, both of Bedford; and one daughter, Judy Corwin (companion Bruce Manion) of Bedford; one stepdaughter, Adah Shrope of California and one stepson, Terry Hill of Bedford; nine grandchildren, Bill (Lisa) Hill and Cory Hill, both of Bedford, Casey Hill of Bloomington, Allen (Marcia) Hill of Waynetown, Elisha Hill of Mitchell, Debbie Miller of Heltonville, Jennifer Matthews of Virginia, Jessica Landry of Maine, and Sean Hill of California;11 great-grandchildren, Logan and Tyler Hill of Bedford, Taylor, Kyle and Ashley Miller of Heltonville, Akacia, Akayden and Akaylie Howe of Mitchell, Alliyah Matthews, Joshua Matthews of Virginia, and Ethan Landry of Maine; two half-brothers, Ernie “Tiny” Albertson of Orleans and Albert “Tude” Albertson of Stanford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Allen Albertson Jr., and Glen and Emmett Albertson; six sisters, Ruby Workman, Betty Baker, Bonnie Micheal, Sally Dugon, Marie Hands and Dorie Greathouse; one son, Lloyd “Jody” Hill; and one grandson, Dustin Hill.

Graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Ashcraft Chapel Cemetery in Owensburg with Clarence Brown officiating. Burial will follow.

Lois Mae Williamson, 84, of Bedford, died at 5:52 p.m. on Sunday at Prairie Lakes Health Campus in Noblesville.

Born March 20, 1928, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Wayne and Jennie O. (Baker) Hendrix. She married Arnold Williamson in August 1946 and he survives.

She was a homemaker and avid Indiana University basketball and football fan.

She attended Broadview Elementary School and graduated from Bloomington High School with the Class of 1946.

She was a member of the Otis Park Ladies Golf League and bowled for many years at Broadview Bowl. She enjoyed having family gatherings as well as cooking for everyone.

Survivors include her husband, Arnold Williamson of Bedford; one daughter, Connie Ray (Bill) of Carmel; two sons, Mike Williamson of Poway, Calif., Mark Williamson (Peggy) of Bedford; a son-in-law, Dan Cook; grandchildren, Michael Conley, Melissa Chouinard (Jason), Jennifer Emmerson (Rob), Brian Ray (Misti), Bradley Ray (Laura), Max and Jesse Williamson, and (Nathanael Williamson; great-grandchildren, Preston Conley, Tabatha, Arabella and Sophia Chouinard, Lauren and Audra Emmerson, Jace Tomlinson, Brianna and Porter Ray, and Myles Ray; and siblings, Edwin Hendrix (Betty), Jeanette Hartgraves and Wanda Gorham (John).

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Deborah Cook; a grandson, Jeremiah Williamson; brothers, Billy, Thomas and David Hendrix; and a sister, Alice Sowders.

Bonnie Lou Landreth, 76, of 3011 Bishop Road, Jeffersonville, died Tuesday at her residence.

Born July 24, 1935, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Hershel Hupp and Violet (Kersey) Singleton. She married William “Bill” Landreth and he preceded her in death.

She was retired from RCA in Bloomington and worked at Buehler’s Grocery in Bedford until 2009.

Survivors include two sons, Tommy Landreth of San Antonio, Texas and Matt Landreth of Spencer; one daughter, Connie Sellers and husband Steve of Jeffersonville; three sisters, Linda Kirby and husband Otis of Auburndale, Fla., Monica Atwood and husband Fred of Elizabeth, and Vicky Sonnpag and husband Danny of Craig, Colo.; four grandchildren, Erica, Michael, Braden and Autumn Sellers, all of Jeffersonville; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and her stepfather, Edward Singleton.

Naomi I. Girdley, 92, of Bedford, died at 7:45 a.m. on Friday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

Born Dec. 28, 1919, in Greene County, she was the daughter of Byrd and Esther (Jeffers) Jackson. She married Homer Girdley on Dec. 24, 1938, and he preceded her in death in 1997.

Naomi was a member of the Oolitic Baptist Church for over 50 years where she taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, 8 & 40, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Naomi held several offices in all of these organizations.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Terry of Bedford and Margaret Riggs and husband David of Oolitic; two granddaughters, Brett Terry of Westfield and Kirsten Gore and husband John of Bedford; a great-grandson, Jackson Gore; and one brother, Ray Jackson and wife Marilyn of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Eva Hudson, Helen Gaines, Mary Beatrice Jackson; one brother, George Jackson; and a son-in-law Ron Terry.

Zella Lawson, 91, Mitchell, passed away at 9 p.m. Sunday at Westview Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bedford.

Born Nov. 1, 1920, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Oatley Ray and Ruth (Wagner) Brown. She married Aaron Lawson May 17, 1946, and he preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1989.

She had been employed at Trav-Ler Radio Corporation and for many years was owner and operator of the Northside Grocery.

Zella was a member of the Faith Christian Center in Salem.

Surviving are sisters, Regina Stroud of Mitchell. Ollie Sarah (Dean) Jackson of Columbus, Ellen (Jerry) George of Bedford and Edna Rainey of Bedford.

Her parents; and brothers, Roy, Charles, Kenneth, and Warren Brown, preceded her in death.

Terry Lane Slinkard, 66, of 2726 Mount Pleasant Road, Bedford, died at 12:20 a.m. on Thursday at the Hospice House of Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born April 20, 1946, in Bedford, he was the son of Gerald and Barbara (Beadie) Slinkard. He married Rita Turpin on Oct. 13, 1973, and she survives.

He was a welder and an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Slinkard of Bedford; three sons, Jathan Slinkard of Florida, Jared Slinkard of Bedford and Terry Slinkard of Bedford; two daughters, Tammy Slinkard, of Bedford and Erin Slinkard of Indianapolis; one brother, Tom Slinkard of Bloomington; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Glen and Bob.

Lotus “Imogene” Crane, 90, of Shoals, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 11:15 p.m. on Friday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

She was born April 3, 1922, in Martin County, the daughter of William M. and Fannie (Chastain) Taylor. She married Lowell Crane on Oct. 8, 1938, in Bedford, and he preceded her in death on March 9, 1999.

Imogene was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Trinity Springs Church of Christ.

She will be forever loved and missed by her family, including: Lotus June (Harley) Neideffer of Shoals; John Robert (Roberta) Crane of Bedford; Brenda Eagan (Chris) of Washington; Sandra Mae Salmon (Ronnie Baker) of Loogootee; and Lowell Edward (Dawn) Crane of Shoals; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one stepgranddaughter; and sisters, Annabelle Fields of Bedford, Opal Dale Mullis of Bloomington, and Hildred Taylor of Shoals.

She was preceded in death by two great-grandsons; one sister, Vernell Rainey; and one brother, John Taylor.

Andy E. Jackson, 55, of Springville, died Friday, May 25, at the Kindred Hospital South in Greenwood, Indiana.

Andy was born November 30, 1956, in Linton, Indiana, the son of Lester “Red” and Ethel Jackson.

Norman Bartholomew

Dec. 12, 1939 —May 14, 2012

Norman Bartholomew passed away on May 14, 2012, with his daughter, Teresa Steinsberger, and sister, Sheri Neff, by his side.

Norman had five children, Cassie (Bartholomew) Jones of Colorado, John Bartholomew of Spencer, Robert Bartholomew of Springville, Michael Bartholomew of Dallas, and Teresa (Bartholomew) Steinsberger of Bloomington. Norm had several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was especially close to his first grandchild, Michelle Anderson, and her two boys, Braden and Logan. He also spent a lot of time with his two grandsons Nick Strain and Dylan Steinsberger.

Norm is proceeded in death by both his parents, his brother David, and niece Lynsey Painter. He is survived by three siblings, Jack Bartholomew of Indianapolis, Sheri Neff of Palo Alto, and Kathy Lawrence of Indianapolis. Norm graduated from Warren Central HS, served in the US Army, and earned a degree from Purdue University. He retired from Diamond Chain. Most recently, Norm was known for his loyal patronage to his two favorite restaurants, Clover Leaf (biscuits and gravy, with extra gravy) and Hardees (biscuits and gravy with a sausage patty on the side). He loved sports, crosswords, and his family.

Carl L. March, 63, of Bloomington, passed away Tuesday at the I.U. Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Born Feb. 20, 1949, in Logansport, he was the son of Darl and Essie (Parish) March.

Carl was the golf superintendent at StoneCrest Golf Course in Bedford.

He was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed officiating basketball. He was a scratch golfer who loved playing golf with his friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Nicole March of Austin, Texas, and Jenifer March Gillespie (Jason) of Indianapolis; one son, Matt March (Sabrina) of Bloomington; his significant other, Tammy March of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Cruz Herrera, Luke Gillespie and Zoey March; one sister, Betty Jo Litke (Fred) of Francesville; and a sister-in-law, Sharon March of Winamac.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Robert March.

Service will be 5 p.m. May 29 at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard in Bloomington. Pastor Danny Curry will officiate.

Gilda Snow

Gilda (Gimlin) Snow, 80, of Bedford, passed away at 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

She was born on Feb. 22, 1932, in Knoxville, Tenn., to Dale Gimlin and Edith (Green) Foster. She married Robert R. (Bob) Snow and he preceded her in death.

Gilda worked as RCA Bloomington, she was also a dental assistant for Dr. Richard Buchanan, and she owned and operated Snow’s Drive-in, in Bedford with her husband Robert R. (Bob) Snow for 36 years.

Survivors include one son, Jerry Snow of Bedford; one daughter, Bobbi Snow Fett and husband Kenny of Mitchell; four grandchildren, Joey Scherschel Buckles and husband Kevin of Mitchell, Stormi Scherschel Jones and husband Jimmy of Bedford, Dr. Travis R. Snow and wife Jenae of Bedford, and Troy Snow and wife Michelle of Bedford; three great-grandsons, Jett Jones, Kade Buckles, and Zachary Snow: one great-granddaughter, Mallorie Jones; and one sister, Vivian Walsch of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband Robert R. (Bob) Snow.

Gilda’s wishes were to be cremated with no services.

Leslie Howard McMahan, 74, Bedford, died on May 17 at his residence.

Born Sept. 12, 1937, in Bedford, he was the son of Leslie Parker McMahan and Geneva (Pavey) McMahan.

He attended Bedford schools.

He was a limestone laborer at Indiana Limestone. He was a former league bowler.

Surviving are his sister, Mary (Charlie) Thornton of Greenwood; nephew, Bill (Renee) Hardwick of Martinsville; and niece, Tammy Carrier of Greenwood. He is also survived by a special neighbor, Carlene White of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside service and burial will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Ikerd Cemetery in Bedford.

There will be no calling at the funeral home.

Robert Kenneth Hall, 84, Bedford, passed away at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born in Bedford, he was the son of Louis Joseph and Trula E. (Whitehead) Hall. He married Barbara Jean Kern on Sept. 3, 1948, and she survives.

He was a 1945 graduate of Bedford High School; a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served in the Indiana National Guard and the Indiana Guard Reserve. He worked at the Times-Mail for almost 44 years and retired from the advertising department in 1989.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Bedford; a 60-year member of Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14; Murat Shrine Temple; a member and past president of La-Or-Ma Shrine Club; past president of the Bedford Jaycees; a 66-year member of American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 and a past member of the Bedford Plan Commission.

Survivors with his wife Barbara are his children, Robert K. (Mary Jane) Hall II, Kathy J. (Bill) Jones, and Dr. Daniel L. (Kim) Hall; grandchildren, Shannon (Dr. Joey) Spires, Dr. Nathan (Holly) Hall, Lauren (Brian) Simpson, Dr. Baron (Erica) Hall, Robert K. Hall III, John Hall, Dr. Tyson (Tia) Medlock, Tanner Medlock, Dr. Tate Medlock, Eric Jones, Katie Jones, Jonathon Jones, Aaron Jones, Tia Jones, Trey Jones and T.J. Jones; 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Key; one brother, Ronald J. Hall; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Louis Hall and three sisters, Marie Kirkman, Alma Sweet and Buela May Trinkle; and one grandson, Jamie Jones.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford, with Pastor Bob Dailey and Brother Bud Smith officiating. Burial will be in Fayetteville Community Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded at the grave by members of American Legion, Gillen Post No. 33, Bedford.

Friends may call on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home with Masonic Rites at 6 p.m..

Pall Bearers will be Tyson Medlock, Shannon Spires, Tanner Medlock, Nathan Hall, Chip Hall, Lauren Simpson, Tate Medlock, Baron Hall and John Hall.

Rosa (Ratkovich) Taylor, 89, of 408 Lincoln Ave., Bedford, died Tuesday at her residence.

Born April 16, 1923, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Matthew and Mary (Maros) Ratkovich.

She retired from M. Fine & Sons in 1993.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly Wray and husband Lary, and Donna Myers, all of Bedford; one sister, Mildred Ratkovich of Bedford; one brother, Daniel Ratkovich and wife Mary of Bedford; four grandchildren, Jennifer Grover and husband Laron, of Kalamazoo, Mich., Justin Spires and wife Cassie, Wendy Ira and husband, David and Cory Neeley, all of Bedford; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Amanda Skidmore, Anna Spaulding, Catherine Poole and Josephine Strunk; and one brother, John Ratkovich.

Patrick Duane Pritchett, 68, of Bedford, died at 7:49 p.m. on Saturday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Jan. 3, 1944, in Bedford, he was the son of Francis K. and Gordia “Leon” (Hamilton) Pritchett. He married Janet Grecco on Oct. 23, 1965, and she survives.

Patrick was a Millwright for General Motors and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife Janet (Grecco) Pritchett of Bedford; three children, Denny Pritchett of Freetown, Annette (Pritchett) Norrick of Oolitic, and Bethany (Pritchett) Melvin of Bedford; and three grandchildren, Jessica Pritchett, and Patrick and Morgan Norrick.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Francis K. Pritchett Jr.

Bobby Lee Turner, 63, passed away at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born on Nov. 16, 1948, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Johnie Turner and Laura (Covey) Turner and was raised by Dad Carl Anderson.

He worked as a Gangsawyer for various stone mills.

Bobby married Patty (Peters) on June 17, 1972 and she survives.

Surviving with his wife Patty are his children, Bobby Lee Turner and wife Debra, Polly Sue Patton and husband Scott, and Johnathon Turner and wife Nellie; 11 grandchildren, Laura, Lanie, Zack, Jeffery, Eli, Micheal, Tyler, Brittany T., Brittany C., Ashly and Shaila; one brother, Lucky Turner; and five sisters, Janice Johnson, Marilou Johnson, Linda Kendall, Lisa Anderson and Carla Anderson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one child in infancy; and one brother, Dale Turner.

He was self-employed in electronics and was a member of the National Guard.

He graduated from Bedford High School with the Class of 1961, was a member of New Hope Church in Bedford, and B.P.O.E. Elks, Lodge No. 826 of Bedford.

Surviving are his companion, Linda Fann of Bedford; one son, Mike (Aubrey) Allen of Indianapolis; two daughters, Keari (Scott) Troutman of Carmel and Katrina (Aaron) Fulling of Palestine, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, Jessica B. Troutman, Hannah I. Troutman, Maggie G. Troutman, Lillian N. Troutman, Colton D. Allen, Chloe D. Allen, Cullen T. Allen, Cory M. Allen, Alexandra N. Fulling and Dannika B. Fulling; one great-granddaughter, Caylin M. Dulworth; two brothers, Walter (Ruth) Allen, Jr. of Mitchell and Jerry (Susie) Allen of Madison; and one sister, Barbara (Clarence) Allen Fish of Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Chesney K. Allen, and one sister-in-law, Mickie Allen.

Claude Allison Rayhill, 86, of Mitchell, passed away at 12:20 p.m. Friday at Hospice House Indiana University Health Bloomington.

Born Nov. 30, 1925, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Herschel and Ida (Dye) Rayhill. His first marriage was to Agatha McPherson Oct. 28, 1944. He married Shirley Ann (Higgs) Haley April 3, 1970, and she preceded him in death in March 13, 2005.

He was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, and served in Okinawa during World War II. Claude was a member of American Legion Post No. 250.

He retired from GM Powertrain with 18 years of service, was a graduate of Mitchell High School with the Class of 1944, and a member of the Living Waters Church of God.

Surviving are his children, Terry Rayhill of Mitchell, Jerry Rayhill of Bedford, Claude (Jolene) Rayhill, Jr. of Mitchell, Jennifer Carter of Elkton, Kentucky, and Chad (Kristi) Rayhill of Mitchell; stepchildren, Rick Haley of Mitchell, Debra Victor of Naples, Fla., Jeff Haley of Mitchell, and Michelle (Larry) Magruder of Whiteland; companion, Betty Rainey of Mitchell; 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and brothers, Gary (Diane) Rayhill of Mitchell, Ernie (JoAnn) Rayhill of Bakersfield, Calif., and Larry Rayhill of Elkart.

His parents; wife; sister, Sue West; and brothers, Virgil and Charles Rayhill; and grandson, Ronald Paul “RJ” Victor II in 1999, preceded him in death.

Helen M. Mahorney, 100, of Seymour, passed away at 7:50 p.m. on Thursday at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

Helen was born May 14, 1912, in Avoca, the daughter of Harry and Mattie (Beck) Riggle. She graduated from Bedford High School in 1930. She married Dennis O. Mahorney on Feb. 8, 1936, in Jeffersonville, and he passed away in 1980.

Helen was a lifetime seamstress working out of their home and at the Shirt Factory in Seymour.

She was a 67-year member of Central Christian Church, serving as Elder and elected Elder Emeritus in 2001; The Loyal Devoir Ladies Group at church; Seymour Elks Auxiliary and the Schneck Hospital Guild.

Helen was proud to celebrate her 100th birthday, living at her own home.

She is survived by her son, Dennis (Mary) Mahorney; two grandchildren, Megan (Scott) Adair and Michael (Lori) Mahorney; four great-grandchildren, Dylan Adair, Joe, Jake and Will Mahorney; a brother, Ray Riggle; nephews, William Krantz, Terry Thomas, Steve and Mike Riggle; and nieces, Beverly Pfaffenberger, Ann Baker, Tammie McKenna, Kim Blaha and Jama Malone.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Mary Becker, Dorothy Burks, and Velma Thomas; and a brother, Walter Riggle.

Joseph Randolph Clark, 84, of 3008 S. Shawnee Dr., Bedford, died at 9:08 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2012, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born September 9, 1927, in Orange Co., he was the son of John and Mary B. (Cobb) Clark. He married Vivian Kern on December 24, 1949, and she preceded him in death on January 29, 1999. He retired from administrative service with Indiana University and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WW II. He was a member of the Gillen Post #33 American Legion where he was past commander, the Eagles Lodge #654, Moose Lodge #1089, AmVets and the Elks Lodge #826 where he had served as Exalted Ruler.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Clark Owens of Bloomington and Julie Clark Young of Virginia; two sons, Joseph A. Clark of Greene Co. and Terry R. Clark of Zionsville, IN; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Helen Dininger of Sullivan; three brothers, Clarence, Marvin and James E. Clark, all of Bedford; several nieces and nephews and his long-time companion, Phyllis Prince. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brothers, Gerald, John H. and Lester Clark; a sister, Edith Benge; and a granddaughter, Shelby Huck.

L. Lavon “Bonnie” Callahan, 78, of Bedford, went to be with her Lord and Savior at 9:35 a.m. on Wednesday at her residence after a lengthy illness.

Born April 30, 1934, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of John H. and Minnie (Pipher) Ball. She married Louis L. Callahan on May 4, 1951, and he preceded her in death.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to sew, garden and tend their farm animals. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Callahan and Brenda Willoughby, both of Bedford; one son, David Callahan and wife Susan of Bedford; four grandchildren, Brad Anderson and wife Heather of Indianapolis, Amanda Swift and husband Clint of Centerpoint, and Howard Dean Callahan and Sarah Jane Callahan of Bedford; two sisters, Mary Louise Williams and Mildred Henderson, both of Mitchell; and four brothers, Kenneth Ball of Bedford, Charles Henry Ball of Mitchell, James Ball of Bloomington and Ronald Ball of Mitchell.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Lois L. Anderson; one son-in-law, James “JB” Willoughby; and two brothers, John Ernest Ball and Leon Ball.

Born March 16, 1929 in Morgantown, she was the daughter of Herbert and Hazel (Thompson) Wayman.

She was a surgical tech. at Dunn Memorial Hospital and also a hair dresser.

She first married Louis Menaugh. She later married Dr. Richard Woolery, and he preceded her in death. She later married Richard Yaeger, and he also preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Brad Menaugh and wife Janice of Bedford, and Bruce Menaugh of Columbia, Tenn.; grandchildren, Brice Menaugh, Dr. Brooke Menaugh-Adams and husband Josh, Brent Menaugh and Mandy Hettle; great-grandchildren, Anna, Carson and Myla Adams, Cody, Logan, Savanna, and Brianna Andis, and Shelby Menaugh; and a great-great-grandchild, Kently Linttv.

She was preceded in death by her parents; the father of her children, Louis Menaugh; Richard Woolery; Richard Yaeger; and a grandson, Troy Menaugh.

He is survived by his mother, Shelia Reynolds of Orleans; his father, William Shelton of English; his close friend, Maxine Reister of Mitchell; a son, Byron Shelton of Eustis, Fla.; three brothers, Tim Shelton of Orleans, Joe Reynolds of West Baden and Darren Shelton of Taswell; four sisters, Pam Pancake of Birdseye, Geneva Leonard of Taswell, Rosie Goldman of French Lick and Lora Reynolds of Phoenix, Ariz.; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Misti Shelton Chapman Fitzgerald.

She was a beautician and a member of the Faith Mission Church and American Legion Auxiliary.

Milburn Wever, 99, of Springville, passed away Thursday at Garden Villa in Bloomington.

Born Jan. 4, 1913, in Lawrence County, the son of Andrew Thorton and Helen (McMillan) Wever.

Milburn was a self employed farmer and drove a school bus for the Monroe County Schools. He was a 73-year member of the Bloomfield Odd Fellows Lodge, a member of the Kirksville Lion’s club and a member of the Popcorn Christian Church.

Surviving relatives include his wife of 78 years, Anna Lois Wever of Springville; his eight children, Robert David (Joyce) Wever of Oottewah, TENN., Roland Lee (Carolyn) Wever of Springville, Ruby May Hubbard of Bloomington, Ruth Ann (Jerry) Bailey of Bloomington, Roy Milburn (Connie) Wever of Ellettsville, Rita Kay (Bob) Hash of Ellettsville, Roger Wayne Wever of Springville and Rena Joy (Terry) Ogle of Springville; 23 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren; and 18 eighteen great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son-in-law and one great grandson.

Born Feb. 14, 1961, in Bedford, he was the son of Lester and Lucille (Bartlett) Meadows. He married Tina (Tincher) Meadows on Oct. 2, 1987; she passed away on Oct. 18, 2005.

He retired from Kmart.

He was a BNL graduate with the Class of 1978. He attended the Apostolic Faith Assembly and the First Church of the Nazarene.

Ronald was born July 28, 1947, in Bedford, to Robert and Margaret (McAfee) Harrison, He married Connie Summers on Feb. 19, 1966, in Bedford, and she survives.

Ronald retired from RCA/Thomson Consumer Electronics in 2000 after 35 years of service.

Ronald was an avid golfer.

Wilford E. “Bill” Brown, 98, of Bedford, formerly of Leesville, died at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday at Garden Villa Health in Bedford.

He was born April 23, 1914, in Lawrence County, to the late Oscar Albert and Matilda (McClintock) Brown. On June 10, 1997, in Campbellsburg, he married the former Emma Condra, and she survives in Bedford.

Mr. Brown attended Leesville United Methodist Church.

He was a steel construction worker with the International Hod Carriers Union, a farmer, and timberer. He loved horses, mules, covered wagons, and to go camping.

Survivors include a stepson, Tom Childers of Campbellsburg; two stepchildren, Ronnie and Sue Ann; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Fred “Jum” Brown, Harley Brown, Arley Brown, and Frank Brown; and three sisters, Edna Hanners, Pearl Stancombe, and Vena Bridwell.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Leesville United Methodist Church with Pastor Rob Kirts officiating. Burial will follow in Leesville Cemetery.

She was a dedicated homemaker most of her life and a member of the New Life Trinity Holiness Tabernacle in Bedford.

She married Maynard Banks on Aug. 29, 1937; he preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1982.

She was of Christian faith.

She maintained close relationships with her co-workers and school classmates with lunch and bunko dates. Margaret was a wonderful cook, loved to read and work on crossword puzzles.

Arie A. Brewington, 99, of Bedford, died at 12:06 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Johnson’s Christian Village in Bedford.

Born January 21, 1913, in Eureka, she was the daughter of Nellie Frances (Sears) and James Franklin Skeen. She married Bertie M. Myers on March 26, 1933, and then Cloyce Brewington on August 5, 1981. They both preceded her in death. Arie was a bookkeeper for the Bedford Federal Savings Bank for 23 years. She was a member of the Englewood Baptist church and volunteered more than 10,000 hours for Dunn Memorial Hospital and various other Bedford nursing homes. Arie graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1932 and Bedford Business College in 1933.

Survivors include a daughter, Geraldine Marie Roberts of California; two step-daughters, Donna Hammond and Mary Helen Granda, both of Indiana; four grandchildren, Julie A. McGinness, Jon D. Roberts, Lora Lanz and Jay C. Roberts, all of California; three step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; and four brothers, James Harold, Roy R., William Dale and Harry W. Skeen; and one sister, Edith Marie Skeen.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 7, at the Englewood Baptist Church with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow at Old Union Cemetery. Gladys M. Brooking, 73, of Mitchell, died at 6:31 a.m. on Friday, May 4, 2012, at IU Health in Bedford.

Born September 30, 1938, in Clear Springs, Jackson Co., IN, she was the daughter of Paul W. and Clara M. (Burford) Brooking.

She worked many years at Westinghouse, Bloomington, retiring in 1990. She later worked at White River Lodge in Bedford.

She was a member of the Baptist Faith and had attended New Hope Community Church; she was a volunteer with the Pink Ladies at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford; attended the Senior Citizens’ Club in Bedford, and enjoyed traveling with Happy Travelers in Bedford.

Surviving are five brothers, Carl W. (Phyllis) Brooking, of Tunnelton, IN; Robert (Janet) Brooking, of Leesville, IN; Kenneth E. Brooking, of Bedford IN; Gary (Sue) Brooking, of Bedford, IN, and Louis (Paula) Brooking, of Norman (Zelma), IN; one sister-in-law, Mary Jo Brooking, Bedford, IN; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Paul R. Brooking; and one sister, Mary Lou Brazzell-Blondin.

Funeral service will be on Monday, May 7, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Pastor Lewis Williams officiating. Burial will be in Bryantsville Cemetery.

Amanda Faye-Ann Wolber, 20, of 580 Leatherwood Road, Bedford, died at 1:52 p.m. on Wednesday from injuries sustained in an auto accident.

Born August 23, 1991, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Andrew and Tonia (Orberson) Wolber. She was engaged to Levi Wright and was soon to be Amanda Wright on June 23, 2012.

She was employed at the Guide Pointe Church where she was a member and involved with Hands of Praise. She was an alumnus of J.C.’s Christian Academy and currently a student at Ivy Tech pursuing a degree in Liberal Arts.

Amanda was an artist, singer and avid reader. She loved God, her family and cooking.

Survivors include her parents of Bedford; her husband-to-be, Levi Wright of Bedford; two sisters, Whitney R. Hartwell and husband Curtis of Columbus and Elizabeth G. Pace of Bedford; a brother, Matthew R. Wolber of Bedford; nephews, Colton Taylor and Sebastian Hartwell; a niece, Chloe Taylor; her maternal grandmother, Beverly Orberson Calhoun of Columbus.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, William G. and Velma F. Wolber; abd her maternal grandfather, Marion Orberson.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Guide Pointe Church, 527 E. 15th St., with Pastors Chris Perry and Kenneth Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Gordon Webb, 90, of Bedford, died at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born March 31, 1922, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Hobert and Pearl (Baker) Webb. He married Yvonne Hamman on March 3, 1945, in Cardiff, South Wales, Great Britain, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 3, 2006.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II.

He was employed as a service manager at Chase Chevrolet for several years and was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.

Emery Wayne Hancock, 83, of Bedford, died at 6:22 a.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born June 9, 1928, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Emery T. and Minnie M. (Galimore) Hancock. He married Nancy Harrison in 1950, and she survives.

He was a graduate of Bedford High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War.

He was the owner of Bedford Pawn and of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed bowling and carpenter work.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy of Bedford; one daughter, Anita Neeley and husband Mike of Bloomington; two sons, Joseph Hancock of Indianapolis and Butch Hancock and wife Janis of Ninevah; eight grandchildren, Jeremiah Hancock, Jeff Hancock and wife Jamie of Mitchell, Branan Neeley and wife Michelle, Eric, Samantha and Matthew Neeley, all of Bloomington, and Cory and Ben Hancock of Ninevah; five great-grandchildren, Lynndsey Hancock, and Addie, Kenzie, Blake and Zee Neeley.

Vertis D. Hall

Vertis Donald Hall, 87, Mitchell, passed away at 5:34 p.m. Tuesday at his residence.

Born May 24, 1924, in Mitchell, he was the son of John and Blanche (Enochs) Hall. He married Viola June Blackerby Oct. 19, 1946.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the 12th Amphibious Landing Craft Division, which was in charge of landing tanks on Omaha Beach on D-Day.

Vertis was a member of American Legion Post No. 250. He was a founder and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107, and was instrumental in the construction of the building.

He retired from GM Powertrain and was a member of UAW Local 440.

Vertis was a former deacon and member of Gibsonton Baptist Church in Gibsonton, Fla.

Surviving are wife, June Hall of Mitchell; children, Judy Lynn (Mark) Hitchcock of Mitchell, Donald (Barbara) Hall of Mitchell, Myra Cagle of Bedford, Tess (Dan LaLoggia) Hall of Louisville, Ky., and Scott Hall of Mitchell; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, Delmont Hall of Bradenton, Fla.

His parents; son, Morris Lee Hall; brothers, Robert Hall and Lloyd Hall; and sister, Loretta Arnold, preceded him in death.

He was a draftsman at NSWC Crane. He was an Army and an Air Force veteran, enjoyed playing the guitar and pool, and listening to blues music.

Mary Ferne Neeson

Mary Ferne Neeson, 85, 728 Glen Meadows Parkway, Bedford, passed away peacefully at 10:55 a.m. on Friday, April 27, at the home she shared with her daughter.

Born in Greene County on Jan. 24, 1927, she was the daughter of Thomas Jackson and Opal Fern (Deckard) Elkins. She married Robert Neeson on March 20, 1971, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1998.

She graduated from Clearspring High School in 1945.

After retiring from General Motors in 1971, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Christian Church in Bedford, the Ladies of the Round Table, former president of Otis Park Ladies Club and former president of South Central Ladies Golf Association.

She was well known in the community as an avid golfer. She was instrumental in organizing and supporting the Junior Girls Golf Program at Otis Park. She was a champion golfer winning the Bedford Ladies City tournament seven times form 1966 to 1976 and a state champion of the Indiana Senior Women’s Golf Association.

Surviving are two daughters, Marsha Mathews (Charlie Elkins) and Lynn Hane (Mike) of Bedford; stepson, Rod Neeson (Connie) of West Terre Haute; and daughter-in-law, Angie Fisher of Bedford. She also has seven grandchildren, Melissa Alvey (Curt), Kye Louden (Sandra), Carmen Fisher, David Fisher (Kristy), Joseph Neeson (Ashley), Christopher Neeson (Heather), and David Neeson (Crista). She had 17 great-grandchildren, Jake, Maitlyn, Gracyn, Carsyn, Kendlyn, Suttyn, and Jett Alvey, Jenna and Memphis Louden, McKinley and Keegan Fisher, Lilly, Sarah, Evan, Liam, Kyle and Ryland Neeson. Also surviving are one brother, Thomas Edward Elkins (Lorine); two sisters, Carolyn L. Greathouse and Geneva M. Wilmoth (Don); and sisters-in-law, Pamela Critchlow and Rowena Tripp (Gary); several nieces and nephews; and loving friend and caregiver, Betty Lou Hale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents; son, Butch Fisher; sister, Kathleen Cowles; and beloved aunt Altha B. Sutton.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Otis Park. The service will begin with the dedication of her memorial limestone bench at hole number 14 at the top of the hill.

Shirley A. Radcliff, 75, Mitchell, passed away at 9:18 a.m. Saturday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born Aug. 21, 1936, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Edward C. and Edith H. (Painter) White. She married Bennie Radcliff in 1956 and he preceded her in death in July 1993.

Shirley was a homemaker and a believer in Jesus Christ, her Lord and Savior. She was a blessing to her family and to the ones that knew her and will be sadly missed. Shirley was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Surviving are a son, Jeffrey E. (Cindy) Radcliff of Mount Pleasant, Texas; granddaughter, Christina Myers of New Jersey; grandson, Brett Michael Radcliff of Texas; sisters, Sandra (Randy) Coble, Betty Kelley and Mary Jane Caraway, all of Mitchell and Brenda (Frank) Chapman of Las Vegas, Nev.

Her parents; husband; and sister, Virginia White, preceded her in death.

Helen G. Tirey

Aug. 28, 1931 — April 28, 2012

Helen Greene Tirey, 80, of DeSoto, died peacefully on Saturday after an extended illness.

She was born in Butler County, Ky., on Aug. 28, 1931, to William Cleburn and Dorothy (Penner) Greene. She graduated from high school in Morgantown, Ky., and attended Western Kentucky State Teachers College.

She started her career teaching in one-room schools in Butler County where she taught grades 1-8. She met the love of her life, Norman Lee Tirey at a revival meeting in the fall of 1951 and they married on Oct. 17, 1952. After a brief stint as a military couple in Louisiana, the Tireys relocated to Muncie. Norman and Helen lived on Abbott Street in Muncie from 1954-1961 where they started their family while she continued teaching in the Daleville Schools. The family moved to Brook Farm in DeSoto, in 1961 where they have remained to this day.

Mrs. Tirey operated Brook Farm Kindergarten in their DeSoto home in the 1960s filling a community need prior to the inclusion of kindergarten in the public schools. In the 1970s, she continued her career in literacy in a number of creative ways. She was a founding board member of the Midwest Writer’s Workshop and served that organization in various capacities from 1974-2008. The family opened The Book End on Walnut Plaza in 1975 which Helen operated until 1993. She frequently appeared as a book reviewer on WIPB with Al Rent and always prided herself in her ability to match her many friends and acquaintances with books suited to their tastes.

She was a champion of local authors and hosted many successful autograph parties in her bookstore throughout its 171⁄2 year run.

After selling the business, Helen had a brief rest before resuming her busy life as caregiver to her mother-in-law Edith. After Edith’s death, she enjoyed the remaining years of her life reading, cooking, traveling to visit family members and friends, attending church and functions at DeSoto United Methodist Church, and wintering in Fort Lauderdale.

She is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by her husband Norman; three children, Stephen (Carol Jean), Phillip, and Cynthia (Ken) Smith; her brother Jim; three grandchildren, Kurt, Shannon and Ken Junior; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at DeSoto United Methodist Church with Pastor Frank Oakman officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. on Friday in Spice Valley Baptist Church Cemetery in Mitchell.

Ronnie Lee Fleetwood, 59, of Indianapolis, formerly of Heltonville, died at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born Aug. 4, 1952, in Heltonville, he was the son of Lessly and Helen (Sturrock) Fleetwood. He graduated from Heltonville High School with the class of 1971. He graduated from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, in 1990 with a BA in Financial Analysis.

He owned and operated Fleetwood Sawmill from 1976 to 1979. He was an avid woodworker. He was also employed as an accountant.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Brower and husband Toby of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Madeline Eve, Katherine Elise and Lauren Elizabeth; four sisters, Martha Davis of Bedford, Louise Meadows of Heltonville, Tammy Reuter of Bedford and Rickie Anderson of Williams; and five brothers, Everett Dean Fleetwood of Heltonville, Rex Fleetwood of Bedford, Bob Fleetwood of Bedford, Ray Fleetwood of Heltonville and Kevin Fleetwood of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Jean Fleetwood; and three brothers, Charles Edwin, Edward Dale and Raymond Willard Fleetwood.
