Janet G. Conner

April 16, 1931 — Feb. 14, 2012

Janet George Conner, 80, of Republic, Ala., passed away Feb. 14, after a brief illness.

She was born in Oolitic, the daughter of Aesop and Minnie George. She was a graduate of Oolitic High School, Class of 1950. She married Charles E. Conner on June 12, 1952, who had a career in the U.S. Air Force.

They have lived in Alabama since 1973.

She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Conner; son, Mike Conner and daughter-in-law, Tammy Conner; and three grandchildren, Shane, Jeremy, and Rachel.

Funeral service was held on Feb. 17 at Gardendale Funeral Home, Gardendale, Ala. Interment was at Bivens Chapel Cemetery.

Beth Ann Inman

June 9, 1951 — Feb. 24, 2012

Beth Ann Baker Inman, 60, of Bedford, passed away peacefully on Friday.

She was born June 9, 1951, to George and Aimee (Turner) Baker. Her family was completed when she welcomed her baby sister, Bonnie Lynn on Jan. 22, 1958. Beth married Robert Ora Inman on Aug. 2, 1974. On May 2, 1977, their first son, Adrain Dain was born. The family grew to include Zachary Nathan, born March 12, 1981, Ashlea Elizabeth born Dec. 29, 1983. Robert Ethan Seth completed the family on Aug. 8, 1988.

She was incredibly caring and compassionate. She loved children and animals, and raised many four-legged kids over the years, with a special place in her heart for her little dog, Peedad.

When at home she spent many happy hours gardening, watching the stars at night and the birds during the day. She spent some of her happiest times traveling the country with her family, splitting weekends between farmers markets in Orange County and flea markets in Brown County.

She enjoyed meeting new people and sharing a conversation; she never met a stranger. For several years, she cherished the annual family trips to Canada, spending time camping, eating fish and chips under the bridge and seeing the sights. Whether the trip was long or short, she always treasured time spent with her family.

After raising her children, Beth worked at Lowes where she made many wonderful friends.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Ora Inman of Bedford; her children, Adrain Dain Inman (Roxana Fuentes) of Indianapolis, their two children, Idalia Jain and Augustus Alexander; Zachary Nathan Inman, Ashlea Elizabeth Inman and Robert Ethan Seth Inman, all of Bedford. Their mom was the center of their world. She is also survived by two special cousins, Connie Rott and Cathy Jane Stewart; her mother-in-law, Bernice Inman and sister-in-law, Denise Tillett and other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her father on May 6, 1979, her mother on Nov. 14, 2003. It broke her heart to lose her sister, Bonnie Lynn on May 8, 1985.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to spend time with friends and loved ones. Beth’s last days were spent with her family. We wish we would have had more time together, although forever would not have been long enough. We will love and miss her always.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Jeff Tillett officiating. Burial will follow at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the mortuary.

Dareta I. Walker

May 26, 1933 — Feb. 21, 2012

Dareta I. Walker, 78, 300 Hillside Ave., Daytona Beach, Fla., died at 8:40 p.m. Feb. 21 at Florida Hospital, Ormond Beach.

Born May 26, 1933, in Orleans, she was the daughter of Harry and Edith (Lindley) Pipher. She married Donald E. Walker on Aug. 11, 1948, and he survives.

She was a housewife. She and her husband developed Woodlawn Village south of Mitchell and were small grain farmers for many years. They also operated Jenkins Brothers Gun Club. In 1957, she was runner-up in the women’s division of the Grand American Trapshoot at Vandalia, Ohio. She was an avid Tennessee Walking Horse lover. She had shown her horses many years at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration in Shelbyville, Tenn., where she won many awards.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Dareta is survived by her husband, Don; daughters, Doneta Hackney (Roberto Arroyo) of Daytona Beach and Sherry (Randy) Jones of Mitchell; three grandchildren, Matthew (Nicole) Jones of Mitchell, Mark (Kayla) Jones of Huron, and Felicia (Tony) Starodub of Orleans; six great-grandchildren, Abby Land, Allison Jones, Ethan and Evan Jones, Aubrey Webster and Alexis Starodub; and one sister, Mercedes Maharis of Hereford, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a great-grandson, Laben Kern.

A private service was held in Florida and cremation was chosen.

Aaron M. Gater

Nov. 4, 1975 — Feb. 21, 2012

Aaron M. “Bear” Gater, age 36, of Springville, passed away on Feb. 21 at his residence.

He was born in Bloomington on Nov. 4, 1975, to Michael and Joan (Hayes) Gater. Aaron was a disabled U.S. Army veteran, serving two tours in the Iraqi War.

He attended White River Valley High School and also attended Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington.

Survivors include his children, Whitney Gater and Alex Gater, both of Bradenton, Fla., and Audrey Gater of Palestine, Ill.; his father, Michael Gater of Solsberry; his mother, Joan Gater of Linton; two sisters, Rachel Foster and husband Carl of Sullivan and Marilla Cosme and husband Alvaro of Linton; one niece, Mattee Smith of Vincennes; two nephews, Connor Foster and Brayton Foster, both of Sullivan; expectant niece or nephew from his sister, Marilla Cosme; and his grandfather, Merrill Gater of Solsberry.

Cremation was chosen.

There will be a Celebration of Aaron’s life for family and friends at a later date.

Isaac Redmond Jr.

Dec. 29, 1957 — Feb. 26, 2012

Isaac Redmond Jr., 54, of 2213 H Street, Bedford, died Sunday at his residence.

Born Dec. 29, 1957, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Isaac Redmond Sr. and Mary (Tallent) Redmond. He married Kelly Sanders on April 16, 1983, and she survives.

He retired as a police officer with the Marion Co. Sheriff’s Dept. and had worked as a police officer at NWSC Crane. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Survivors include his wife, Kelly, of Bedford; his father, Isaac Redmond of Florida; a son, Joshua Redmond of Bedford; a daughter, Heather Mefford of Bedford; three grandchildren, Madison, Connor and Ryleigh; two brothers, David Redmond of Brown County and Joe Redmond of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Darryl Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Jerry Dee Neal

Jan. 16, 1936 — Feb. 23, 2012

Jerry Dee Neal, 76, of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, while vacationing in Naples, Fla., with close friends.

Born on Jan.16, 1936, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Paul Stanley Neal and Dorothy (Rayhill) Neal.

Jerry was blessed to have two special women in his life; his wife of 42 years, Sue M. (Browning) Neal, who preceded him in death, and Katherine Haseman, who gave him new life after the loss of his wife.

Jerry was the rock of his family, making sure that his family was loved and taken care of in every way.

Surviving Jerry are his two daughters, Teresa Meadows and Janelle Conner and her husband Terry; and his son-in-law, Joe Dooley. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Jody Dalton, Jerry Neal, Tiffany (Cameron) Brantley, Jamin (Jennifer) Thomas, Josh (Sarah) Thomas, Allison (Jesse) Parker, Erin (Matt) Todd, and Hannah Meadows; seven great-grandchildren, Dean Morrow, Simone Brantley, Kambree Brantley, Marissa Todd, Paisley Todd, Preston Todd and Baby Parker; and one brother, Don Neal.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and daughter, Sherry Dooley.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the First Assembly of God Church in Bedford, with visitation at the church from 9 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

William R. Bond

July 27, 1949 — Feb. 24, 2012

William R. “Bill” Bond, 62, of Bedford, died Friday at his residence.

Born July 27, 1949, in Anchorage, Alaska, he was the son of Robert Bond and Isabel (Rodgers) Lee.

He was retired from General Motors where he worked as a die caster. Bill was a member of the U.A.W. Local 440, the VFW and a Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving in Vietnam.

Survivors include his daughter, Audrey Mason and husband Kris of Bedford; two sisters, Barbara Ritchey and husband Roy of Hot Springs, Ark., and Nancy Kennedy of Billings, Mont.; two brothers, Larry Lee and wife Anita of Oolitic and Roger Lee and wife Kathy of Bedford; and two granddaughters, Isabel and Madalyn Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepfather, Olan Lee.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Roger Lee officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with military rites by the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

Edwin E. Hoggatt

July 14, 1928 — Feb. 25, 2012

Edwin Eugene Hoggatt, 83, of Martinsville passed from this life at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday at the Franklin United Methodist Community surrounded by the love of his family.

Edwin was born on July 14, 1928, in Bono to the late Christopher and Anna L. (Hamilton) Hoggatt. He spent his childhood in Mitchell before moving to Indianapolis and finally Martinsville in 1971.

On July 2, 1949, he married Mary Frances (Hicks) Hoggatt. She preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 1993.

He served his country honorably as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from Jan. 15, 1952-Oct. 14, 1953.

In 1980, he retired from Allison’s Division of General Motors in Indianapolis after 30-plus years of employment as a heat/treat operator and was a member of the UAW Local No. 933.

Edwin had a passion for helping others; he enjoyed repairing lawn mowers and doing other handyman jobs for his family and friends. He had also taken interest in woodworking after his retirement, as well as mushroom and ginseng hunting. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his family, especially his granddaughters.

He is survived by his loving family including one son, Dennis (Noreen) Hoggatt of Franklin; daughter, Jayna (Christ) Abshire of Martinsville; and granddaughters, Courtney and Stacey Abshire.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Mary Frances Hoggatt; three brothers, Elmer, John Henry and Noble Hoggatt; and three sisters, Mary Holt, Nona McFarland and Grace Baker.

Family and friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville. Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at Shultz Cemetery in Martinsville with the Rev. Evie Stuard officiating.

Gwen Turner, 82, of Bedford, died at 3:12 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

Born March 19, 1929, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Ora and Elizabeth (Brewer) Turner. She was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church and the ABC quilting club.

Survivors include her many nieces, nephew, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ray, George, Fred, and Kenny Turner; and five sisters, Beulah Mabbitt, Betty Boyd, Esther Sherrow, Coletia Rollens and Marjorie Hunter.

Penny S. Smith, 56, of Bedford, passed away at 1:32 a.m. on Friday, February 24, 2012, at her residence in Bedford. Penny was born on December 24, 1955, in Bedford, to Morton and Elsie (Johnson) Keller; she married Jimmy Edwin “Ed” Smith on February 14, 1974, in Bedford, and he survives. Penny had worked for many years at Cook Medical in Bloomington; she was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church.

Survivors include her loving husband, Ed Smith of Bedford; one son, Corey Smith and his companion Darcy Randolph of Bedford; one daughter, Christy Kamai and her husband Rome of Kodiak Island, Alaska; four grandchildren, Maxwell Randolph of Bedford, Tristan, Makana, and Ikaia Kamai, all of Kodiak Island, Alaska; her mother, Elsie Keller of Bedford; one brother, Richard Keller and wife Denise of Bedford; two sisters, Patricia Keller of Bedford, and Ilene Lantz of Bedford; and her mother-in-law, Betty Ritchison of Bedford.

Penny was preceded in death by her father, Morton Keller.

Memorial services will be on Friday, March 2, 2012, at 5:30 p.m. at the Avoca Baptist Church, in Avoca. The family will receive friends beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Friday at the church until service time.

Judith J. “Jude” Gater age 36 of Springville, passed away at her residence on February 23, 2012.

She was born to Joel Edward and Gladys (Collier) Hulsing on February 24, 1975 in Bedford. Jude worked at Bandanas in Bedford.

She was a loving mother and grandmother, she loved animals, was a positive spirit and inspirational, she didn’t know a stranger, Jude was creative, beautiful, and will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her daughter, Zaviara Young and husband Nathaniel of French Lick, one grandson, Malakhi Freedom Young of French Lick, Father Joel E. Elinor E. Stetler

Dec. 19, 1918 — Feb. 23, 2012

Elinor Elaine Stetler, 93, of Mitchell, passed away at 2:40 p.m. on Thursday at the Indiana University Bloomington Hospital. She was formerly a resident of Shoals and had resided at Mitchell Manor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Mitchell for the past nine years.

She was born Dec. 19, 1918, in Lost River Township, to Conrad and Isabel (Simmons) Kalb.

Following high school and college, she moved to the Chicago area and was a proprietor of a painting and decorating store. She retired after a career managing various department stores, and then settled back in Martin County.

Upon retirement she had many interests and was very active in the Rush Homemakers Club, Windom Grange, Martin County Council on Aging, Hoosier Uplands Board, Red Hat Society, Shoals Senior Citizens, President of the Mitchell Manor Residents board and the Jug Rox Grandmothers Club.

She will be greatly missed by her family including: three daughters, Sandra (Ernie) Kingery of Washington, Charlotte (Bill) Campbell of Portage, and Suzanne (Darrell) Brown-Campbell of Shoals; two sons, John (Carlene) Stetler of Lake Station and David Stetler of Dubois; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Melchoir Kalb and Conrad Dale Kalb, both of Shoals.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Iris Brown; and two brothers, Keith and Marvin Kalb.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Burial will be in the Cuzco Cemetery in Orange County.

Rose Mary Fidler age 86 of Mooresville, passed away on Thursday February 23, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove, Indiana.

She was born on February 12, 1926 in Daviess County to Roy & Mabel (McCrary) May. She married Jack E. Robinson on June 14, 1946, and he preceded her in death in 1984. Rose Mary retired from Indiana Bell Telephone Co. and also worked at Walmart in Bedford. She attended Corner Stone Worship Center in Bedford.

William R. Perry

William R. Perry, 74, of 498 Perry Road, Williams, passed away at 4:18 p.m. on Wednesday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Oct. 6, 1937, in North Vernon, he was the son of Russell Aaron and Pearl Leona (Smaltz) Perry. He married Carolyn R. Sowders on Sept. 12, 1959, and she survives.

He was raised in Bedford and attended Bedford High School.

Bill was employed as an electrician with I.B.E.W. Local No. 1393 for many years and also with Local No. 17 in Detroit, Mich. He retired in 2000. Bill was a Journeyman Lineman and Foreman for many years.

He loved to farm and raise cattle. His pastimes were hunting and fishing.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Bill is survived by his wife, Carolyn, of Williams; sons, Timothy (Roz) Perry of Mitchell, Michael (Rosezona) Bowden of Corydon; daughters, Karen (Robert Stine) Cooper of Orleans, Michele (Glen Morris) Palmer of Virden, N.M., Belinda (Dave) Smale of Bedford and Shonda (Troy Bakker) Beach of Williams; 14 grandchildren, Jeff (Samantha) Perry, Dustin (Haley) Perry, Justin Perry, Ryan Perry, Whitney Perry, Jessica (James) Dillman, Julia Cooper, Derek Cooper, Devin (Renee) Smale, Bryce Smale, Cyle (Breianon) Beach, Cole Beach, Michael Bowden II and Jayden Bowden; five great-grandchildren, Cerilene Roe, Dylan Perry, Avah Cooper, Grayson Perry, Mya Smale; sisters, Mary (Charlie) Mellott, Jill Benton, Ellen (Bill) Mitchell, Linda (Frank) Taylor and Nancy (Ron) Howard; and brothers-in-law, James Hearn and Tuck Doane.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenn Perry; sisters, Carolyn Sesma, Margaret Crites, Jan Doane and Charotte Hearn; a son-in-law, John Palmer; brothers-in-law, Jack Meadows, Lou Sesma and George Crites; nieces and nephews, Byron Dean Sowders, Roger Doane, Kim Hearn, and Erin Mellott; and his father and mother-in-law, Gerald and Thelma Sowders.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Farrell Sowder and Pastor Randy Corbin officiating. Burial will follow in Dive Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the mortuary.

Rose Mary Fidler, age 86, of Mooresville, passed away on Thursday at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove.

George K. Gates, 91, of Norman, died at 9:22 p.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born on Feb. 11, 1921, in Anderson, he was the son of James Calvin Gates and Ada (Smith) Gates. He married Alice Gillespie on Feb. 28, 1942, and she preceded him in death on April 13, 2007.

He was a Wood Pattern Maker and Supervisor at GM Powertrain, Bedford, for 36 years, retiring in 1977.

He was a member of the Clearspring Baptist Church. He was a World War II U.S. Navy Veteran.

Surviving are one son, David Lee (Mona) Gates of Bedford; one grandson, David Craig (Wendy) Gates of Bloomington; two granddaughters, Amber Hillenburg of Corydon and Lori (Rex) Ketcherside of Bedford; four great-grandsons, Michael Gates of Mitchell, Trey Lindeau and Tyler Lindeau, both of Bedford, and Lane Tompkins of Bloomington; three great-granddaughters, Charlene Hillenburg of Corydon, Tylynn Gates of French Lick, and Kaylee Tompkins of Bloomington; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Diana Gates; son, George Kenneth Gates, Jr.; two brothers; and two sisters.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Clearspring Baptist Church in Clearspring, with Pastor David Sawyers officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Memorial Park in Anderson at 2:30 p.m. on Monday

Tana Mauzy-Kerker, 62, of 5719 Stacy Road, Charlestown, died at 1:20 a.m. on Tuesday at the Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville.

Born Nov. 8, 1949, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Wilbur (Jack) and Frieda (Stancombe) Mauzy. She married Scott Kerker and he survives.

She was employed in hospital administration for much of her life and assisted with several Alzheimers support groups.

She enjoyed genealogy, horses, her pets, being in the outdoors and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Scott Kerker; one daughter, Tamme Been; a grandson, Harrison Been; a granddaughter, Haleigh Been, all of Charlestown; and one brother, Jack Mauzy of New Albany.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Kimberly (in infancy); and a granddaughter, Shelby (in infancy).

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. on March 10 in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary. No visitation is planned.

E. Anne Johnson

July 27, 1939 — Feb. 19, 2012

E. Anne Johnson, 1526 13th St., Bedford, died at 9:42 p.m. Sunday at her residence.

Born July 27, 1939, in Loogootee, she was the daughter of Anna Marie (Gootee) and Frank Jones. She married Charles David Johnson on March 18, 1976, and he died Aug. 13, 2007.

Surviving are one sister, Rita Butcher; and one brother, Michael F. Jones, both of Loogootee.

Two sisters, Wilma Parsons and Mary Ruth Clements, preceded her in death.

She leaves a number of nephews and nieces whom she considered “her kids” and a number of friends she considered her family, particularly the “herd” of longtime classmates, her close college friends, April Armstrong (her close friend and caregiver extraordinaire) and those in her book and bridge clubs. She was particularly thankful for those who befriended and helped her in the years after her husband’s death. They know who they are.

Johnson retired after 29 years from the Naval Weapons Support Center, Crane. Her last position was as a supervisory technical information specialist but much of her career was spent as a writer-editor.

An avid reader, she also enjoyed writing memoirs and anecdotes for friends and family. In corroboration with many others, Johnson worked extensively on a history of St. John’s Catholic Church in Loogootee, published in 1992. She often reflected that it was one of her favorite projects. (For many years she was an active member of her home parish serving as a member of the choir, a religious education teacher, and president of the Legion of Mary. She was educated for 12 years in St. John’s Schools.)

Johnson attended Indiana State University and was graduated from Indiana University. While employed at Crane she attended the Defense Information School for Public Information Officers, and was graduated as its Distinguished Honor Graduate, the first woman and the first civilian to be so honored.

With her husband, Johnson was once awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for her off-stage participation in the Little Theatre of Bedford. She was a member and past chair of the Cum Libris Book Club in Bedford

A member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford, she participated in the choir, served for some 15 years as treasurer of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and was one of the founders of its first Thrift Shop operation.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions may want to consider using the Lawrence County Community Foundation, designating either the David “Bud” Johnson Fund for Little Theatre of Bedford or the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Bedford Fund; or using the Martin County Community Foundation, designation the Gerdon Jones Educational Scholarship Fund.

The Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements but there will be no visitation. A mass for Anne is planned at St. John’s Catholic Church in Loogootee at 11 a.m. on Friday. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford, after which her ashes will be interred at the Green Hill Cemetery.

Tony Wayne Fox, age 55, passed away Monday at his residence in Bedford. He was born on Oct. 21, 1956, in Knox County, Ky.

He was the son of Mary Miller and Arthur Fox, both of Knox County, Ky.

He married Nancy Jo Mowry on June 18, 1988. Together they had two wonderful children, Taylor Wayne Fox, 21, and Kaylee Jo Fox, 18, both of Bedford.

Tony had worked at D&K Pools in Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lemons; his father, Arthur Fox; one sister, Anita Fox, and his brother, William Fox.

Survivors include his beloved children, Taylor and Kaylee Fox; his ex-wife and friend, Nancy Jo Fox of Bedford; three sisters, Shirley Massengill of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Ann Rose (Ott) of Winchester, Ky., and Audrey Fox Fields of Bedford, Indiana; four nephews, Nick Fields of Bedford, Anthony Massengill (Stacy) of Bardstown, Ky.; Nathan Fields of Bedford, and Ott Ray Jr. (Tara) of Lexington, Ky.; one niece, Maryann Williams (Shannon) of Winchester, Ky., and six great-nieces and nephews.

Tony enjoyed fishing, Kentucky basketball and most of all spending time with his children.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Feb. 23, from 4-8 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Friday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home. Pastor Ott Rose will officiate.

Blanche Maxwell, 98, of West Lafayette, died Monday at her residence. Born June 3, 1914 in Norman, she was the daughter of Ulysses Grant and Amanda (Cummings) Norman. She married Carl Maxwell and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and a member of the Presbyterian Church in West Lafayette. Survivors include nieces and nephews, Richard Todd, Wilma Spencer, Fred Todd and Dorothy Bauer. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four sisters, Julia Schultz, Katie Norman, Florence Todd and Naomi Norman; one brother, Ernest “Glen” Norman.

Margaret L. Sobiech, age 76, Bloomington, passed away on Wednesday at Forest Park Health Campus in Richmond.

She was born Dec. 7, 1935, in Watertown, Wis., the daughter of Jerome and Loretta (Gallagher) McCaig. She married Andrew J. Sobiech on Oct. 10, 1959.

She graduated from Watertown High School, and attended St. Mary’s Nursing School in Milwaukee, Wis., where she became a Registered Nurse. She touched the lives of many through her years of service at Dunn Memorial Hospital and as a dialysis and home health nurse.

She loved her friends, crocheting, her dog (Kirby), an occasional silly horror movie, and her family, especially her wonderful grandchildren.

She loved her husband, Andy, and missed him greatly over the last five years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, friend, and person, and will be profoundly missed.

Survivors include: her daughter, Mary Ann (Brad) Barrett of Richmond; sons, Stephen J. (Kathleen) Sobiech of Bloomington, Paul A. (Karin) Sobiech of Denver, Colo., and Michael J. Sobiech of Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren, Andrew Barrett and Erin Barrett of Richmond, Helen, Joseph and John Paul Sobiech of Bloomington, Eli, Ian and Mila Sobiech of Denver, Colo.; sister and brother, Mary (Bob) Phelps and Jerome McCaig, all of Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her brother, Neal; and one granddaughter, Anya Sobiech, in 2000.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church Bedford, with the Rev. Rick Eldred officiating.

Helen Louise Todd, 86, of Bedford passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Jan. 22, 1926, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Harra and Sylvia (Ollis) Lee. She married Harry Todd on June 11, 1944, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1972.

She retired from the Edgewood Clinic in Bedford. Helen was baptized at Tunnelton United Methodist Church, and attended Hillcrest Christian Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Treva Moore and husband J.D. of Bedford; two sons, Toby Todd of Heltonville and Tony Todd and wife Sherry of Heltonville; six grandchildren, Troy Todd and wife Jody of Martinsville, Trent Todd and wife Erin of Heltonville, Patrick Todd and wife Kristy of Camby, Lacey Russell and husband Tony of Heltonville, Casey Todd and wife Jessica of Heltonville, and Tyler Moore of Bedford; 13 great-grandchildren, Grant and Graycen Todd, Truman, Annabelle and Laney Todd, Michael, Brittany and Savannah Russell, Drew Bailey, Aralynn and Bryleigh Todd, and Jenna and Codey Todd; and several nieces and nephews.

Melvyn Hardwick

Melvyn M. “Shorty” Hardwick, 72, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon at home in Brown County. By his side was his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Judy K. Hardwick, whom he married on March 5, 1961, in Bedford.

Melvyn was born Dec. 7, 1939, in Bedford to the late Samuel Woodrow and Ruth (Sons) Hardwick. He served his country as a PFC with the United States Army from 1963 to 1965.

Melvyn was loved by his son, Sam (Shelly) Hardwick, and his grandson, Tyler Paul Hardwick, all of Pickerington, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by one brother, William Hardwick.

Melvyn retired in December of 2001 as a “Car Man” for Amtrak after 42 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed owning and operating Mel’s Locksmith and spending his time helping others in need. Melvyn was known by his friends and family as the “Mayor of Fruitdale.”

He was a 22-year member and greeter at the New Life Community Church in Nashville. He and his wife help found the Brown County Boosters Athletic Club 1989 and also were members of the Ding-a-Lings Square Dance Club.

Melvyn’s hobbies included: watching and feeding the birds (especially hummingbirds), going out to eat and watching John Wayne movies. He was a fan of the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana University Men’s Basketball.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the New Life Community Church, 1450 State Road 135 N. in Nashville. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Church. Military rites will be presented by the Brown County Honor Guard following the funeral service at the church.

Bob was called home this week. Bob ran a great race and had fought the best of fights. He passed away surrounded by his family and comforted in knowing he was going home.

Born Dec. 18, 1931, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Vidella (Covey) Kinser. She married Glen G. Donica on March 18, 1949, in Lawrence County; and he preceded her in death on May 11, 2004.

She attended school in Heltonville and attended the Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene.

Born April 12, 1930 in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Chesley and Daisy (Prather) Reynolds. She married Shirley William “Bill” Jackson on Aug. 29, 1953, in Bedford; and he preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 1996.

She retired from Indiana Limestone Company.

She was a graduate of Shawswick High School, and a member of the Nazarene Church.

Surviving are her two brothers, Thomas E. “Doc” (Norma) Reynolds of Bedford and Kenneth (Barbara) Reynolds of Sellersburg; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was born on March 13, 1942, in Chicago, to Charles Donald and Jeanette M. (Rolseth) Denman.

Mary Lou was employed with RCA in Bloomington for 34 years.

Mary Lou is survived by her mother, Jeanette M. Denman of Linton; one son, Larry (Tammy) Inman of Mitchell; one daughter, Terri George of Jeffersonville; 11 grandchildren, Daniel, Tia-Marie, Micah, Mkaebe, Sammi, Sarah, Casey, Abby, Mason, Madyson and Hayden; and great-grandchildren, Juan and James.

Mary Lou was preceded in death by her father, Charles Denman (June 21, 1987).

Funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at the Anderson-Poindexter Memory Chapel in Linton, with the Rev. David Atkins officiating. Interment will follow at the Switz City Cemetery in Switz City.

Mary Ruth Elrod, 68, Medora, formerly of Orleans, went to be with her Mommy and Daddy Thursday morning at the Indiana University Health Morgan Hospital in Martinsville.

Ruthie was the “special” child born in the home of John A. and Rowena Tanksley Elrod on Oct. 6, 1943.

She is survived by her siblings, Paul Elrod of Mitchell, Phyllis Gray of Terre Haute, Peggy (Ronald) Wood also Terre Haute and Nancy (Tyler) Sage of Gosport. There are several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Ruthie is also survived by her caretaker of 22 years, Sarah Wooldridge and her daughter, Janice Wooldridge, who was Ruthie’s “sister friend” of Medora. She is also survived by all of her extended family, who loved Ruthie as their own.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her maternal grandparents, R. Noble and Ruby Tanksley of Mitchell; her paternal grandparents, Anderson and Amanda Elrod of Paoli; and a brother-in-law, Dr. James A. Gray of Terre Haute.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans. Pator Floyd Fisher of the Church of the Nazarene in Kurtz, assisted by the Rev. Patrick Sinnott of the Old Union United Methodist Church in Orleans will officiate. Burial will follow in the Old Union Cemetery.

James “Jake” Webster, 45, of Bedford, died at 12:28 p.m. Wednesday at Garden Villa (Michael’s House) in Bedford.

Born Jan. 31, 1967, in Greenville, Miss., he was the son of James Webster and Doris (Johnson ) Madison.

Jake resided at the Michael’s House portion of Garden Villa for over 10 years. Jake had several peers that resided with him. He had become very close with several of the nurses and caregivers while at Michael’s House.

Roger Elwayne Tanksley, 77, passed away at 4 p.m. Wednesday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born May 1, 1934, in Manchester, Ky., he was the son of Raleigh and Stella (Robinson) Tanksley Jr.

He had been a security guard at Carpenter Body Works and had been employed as a truck driver.

Roger was a member of LifePoint Christian Church and a U.S. Army veteran.

Surviving are sisters, Patricia Kirby of Cloverdale, Brenda Reed of Georgetown and Virginia Turner of Loveland, Ohio; brothers, John Chastain of Bell, Fla., and Dean Tanksley of Mitchell.

His parents; sisters, Shirley Jones and Joan Kitzero; and brother, Jimmy Tanksley, preceded him in death.

She was born on March 3, 1923, in Washington, to Lawrence and Laverne (Hart) Gregory.

Betty was a homemaker.

Survivors include her children, Gary L. Gray of Washington, Carolyn Brown of Bedford, Bobby G. Gray of Mooresville, Janice Ballard of Greenwood, Ronnie K. Gray of Shoals, and Cheryl Collins of Brock, Texas; she has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one brother, William Gregory of Mentor, Ohio.

Robert Kresser, age 85, of Bedford, passed away at 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

He was born on Aug. 17, 1926, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Frank and Helen (Ries) Kresser, Robert married Delores Ellis Kresser and she survives.

Robert retired from Ford Electronics in Bedford in 1987; he was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II; and a member of the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 in Bedford.

Survivors include his wife, Delores (Ellis) Kresser of Bedford; two sons, David Kresser and wife Janet of Atlanta, Ga., and Todd Kresser and wife Katie of Seattle, Wash., three grandchildren, Cory Kresser of Newburgh and Hannah and Robert Kresser of Atlanta, Ga.; two sisters, Virginia Moser and Helen Meece, both of Cincinnati; and one brother, Frank Kresser and wife Linda of Cincinnati.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert A. Kresser; one daughter, Susan James; six brothers, Edward, Charles, Clarence, James, Elmer and Fred Kresser; and two sisters, Ramona Holste and Betty Balcom.

Shelva Taylor, 65, of 703 Chestnut Street, Jonesville, died at 9:12 a.m. on Wednesday at his residence.

Born Sept. 19, 1946, in Lawrence County, he was the son of George and Nina (Kines) Taylor. He first married Catherine “Cat” Eads. He later married Brenda Taylor and she preceded him in death.

He retired as a plumber for Turpin Plumbing and Heating and was a former member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his children, Shelby Taylor and Nina Taylor, both of Bedford, Melissa Snovelle of Jonesville, Pauline Hanson of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Michael Taylor and Kevin Taylor, both of Bedford; several grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a host of nieces and nephews; two brothers, James Taylor of Peru and Leroy Taylor of Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Brenda; two sisters, Jonanne Craig and Minnie Taylor; and one brother, George Taylor.

Ruth Margaret Horan, 89, of Bedford, died at 6 a.m. Tuesday at her residence, surrounded by family and friends.

Born Dec. 23, 1922, in Rushville, she was the daughter of Harry and Florence (Rheil) Euler.

She married Francis W. Horan on May 12, 1948, in Rushville. He preceded her in death on Dec. 30, 1999.

She was a homemaker and graduate of Indiana Business College in Columbus, and a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Bedford, where she was also a member of the Altar Society. Ruth was a volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul Society Thrift Store, in Bedford and will be remembered for her generous spirit to people of all walks of life. She was a faithful servant to her church.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1927, in Champagne County, Illinois to Carl and Genieveive (Shepard) Pufahl. He first married Eugenie Nourie Pufahl, and she preceded him in death; he later married Vivian Pufahl and she survives.

Robert was the owner/operator of Bob’s Upholstery Shop in Sarasota, Fla. for many years, and was a U.S. Army Veteran

He is survived by his wife, Vivian Pufahl of Indianapolis; one granddaughter, Stacy Sauer and husband Rob of Indianapolis; two great-grandchildren, Casey and Jarod England of Mitchell; one brother, Delmar Pufahl and wife Judy of Paris, Ill.; nephew, Richard Nourie of Bedford; and niece, Lisa Marshall of Illinois

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife Eugenie Pufahl; one son, Terrance Pufahl in 2006; one great-grandson, Timothy England in 2010; one brother, Donald Pufahl; and one sister, Mary Bennett.

Ronald J. Stovall

JULY 19, 1933 — FEB. 8, 2012

Ronald J. Stovall, Avoca-Eureka Road, Bedford, passed away Wednesday evening at White River Lodge in Bedford at the age of 78.

He was born on July 19, 1933, in Evansville to Pharl and Mildred Stovall. He was a graduate of Evansville Bosse High School in 1951. Ron married Linda Sue in 1969 and subsequently divorced in 1982.

Ron briefly attended college before joining the Army in 1953. He served in Japan as a Microwave Radio Repairman until being honorably discharged in 1955. He returned to college and received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering in 1959.

Ron worked as an electrical engineer for what is now Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane, retiring in 1988 with 30 years service.

He was preceded in death by his adolescent brother, Pharl Stovall Jr., followed by his father and mother. There are no surviving relatives.

Ron enjoyed flying, radio-controlled boats and tinkering with electronic devices in his basement laboratory. He will be most remembered, however, for his love of tennis, his contributions to the sport locally as director of the Bedford Tennis Club and his many years as assistant boys and girls tennis coach at Bedford North Lawrence High School.

He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he generously touched.

Edward W. Polson

Aug. 21, 1942 -- Feb. 7, 2012

Ed Polson of Pleasanton and Graeagle, Calif., where he recently retired, died Tuesday at the VA Hospice Center in Reno, Nev., after a year-long battle with cancer.

Ed grew up in Mitchell. He was a three sport letterman at Mitchell High School before attending Indiana University. He graduated with a BA degree in 1964, and earned his MBA in 1966. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

In 1967, he joined the Navy and served as a Lieutenant aboard the USS Nicholas and the USS Mars during the Vietnam War, both in the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea.

Upon the completion of serving his country, in 1974 Ed graduated from The University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He started his law practice in Pleasanton, Calif., with longtime friend Dick Harvey and was a sole practitioner until his semi-retirement in 2010.

In September of 1971, he married Jane Lawler of Bayonne, N.J., and Alameda, Calif., and settled in Pleasanton where they raised three sons, Andrew (and Shauna) Polson of Longmont, Colo., Scott (and Pamela) Polson of San Jose, Calif.; and Gregory (and Missy) Polson of Pleasanton, Calif., the parents of Ed’s much loved grandson, Park Edward, aged three years.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Henry Polson, of Mitchell.

In addition to his children and grandchild, he is survived by his sister Jane Maddock (and Dr. Gene Maddock) of St. Joseph, Mich., along with numerous nieces and nephews.

During his business career, Ed enjoyed supporting his Pleasanton community as a member of the Jaycees and Rotary Club. He was also a long time member of Castlewood Country Club, where he served as Vice President. He thoroughly enjoyed his weekly golf games with his long time golfing friends.

A memorial service to celebrate, honor and remember Ed’s life will be at Lynnewood United Methodist Church, 4444 Black Avenue, Pleasanton, at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 19, with a reception to follow.

The Rev. Paul Louis Hoskins, 84, of Mitchell, died at 10:20 a.m. Thursday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born June 11, 1927, in London, Ky., he was the son of Charlie and Martha (Tankersley) Hoskins.

He married Frances Ellen Duncan on June 21, 1947, in Salem, and she survives.

He received a bachelor’s degree from the Olivet Nazarene College. He was a Nazarene minister and served many area churches for 39 years. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Mitchell.

Glen R. Ohl, 82, of Bedford, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family, with the wonderful support of Hospice, after a tenacious battle with cancer.

Married to the love of his life, Beverly (Ann Bell), for more than 61 years, Glen was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

The grandson of German immigrant farmers who settled in the Danville, Ill., and Covington areas, Glen was a self-made man. As a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War, he actively served in the reconstruction of Europe after World War II. He then worked his way through General Motors Institute while helping raise his young sons. Upon graduating from GMI with a bachelor of science in industrial engineering he worked at the Danville, Ill.. GM plant before transferring to Bedford.

Glen was a member of The American Legion and he and his family have been lifelong members and supporters of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Preceding Glen in death are his beloved mother, Frances Pintar Ohl; father, Louis Gus Ohl; his angel aunt, Lydia Ohl Hannah; and two brothers, Grant and Victor.

Glen is survived by his adoring family, including wife, Beverly; sons, Steven of Bedford, Jeffrey (Colleen) of Dayton, Ohio, Timothy (Azita) of Stamford, Conn., and Gregory (Laura) of Bedford; grandchildren, Philip and Alex of Dayton, Ohio, Luke of Denver, Colo., Mark of Los Angeles, Calif., Amber of Park City, Utah, Justin (Marisa) of Bedford, Jordan of Purdue/West Lafayette, and Jacob of Bedford; brother, Tom (Janet) of Chicago, Ill.; and his special cousins, Bill (Wilma) Hannah and Linda (Virlon) Starr, Danville, Ill.

Glen was so happy he lived long enough to see his bright little star great-grandson, Brayden, take his first steps. Glen’s grandchildren have promised to carry on their hero’s legacy of hard work, responsibility and devotion to family.

By being released from the bonds of this earth, Glen will live on forever in the hearts, minds, bodies and actions of his loving family.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. on Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Rosary prayed at 7:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with Fr. Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Susan E. Wisley, age 69, of Bedford, passed away at 7:17 p.m. on Tuesday at Monroe Hospital in Bloomington.

She was born on May 21, 1942, in Greenwich, Conn., to Frank and Ruth (Carmichael) Bennett. She married Jerry Wisley on Feb. 22, 1987, in Bloomington, and he survives.

Susan had previously worked for RL Polk Directories in sales, at JoAnn Fabrics in Bedford and Bloomington, and Hallmark in Martinsville.

Susan was a 4-H Leader in Morgan County for many years.

Survivors include her loving husband, Jerry Wisley of Bedford; two children, Tom Cromwell and wife April of Martinsville and Dawn Purdue and husband Martin of Martinsville; four stepchildren, Melinda Raines and husband Tim of Fayetteville, Alice Wisley of Spencer, Ivan Wisley and wife Kelly of Vincennes, and Ruth May and husband Doug of Fayetteville; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jack M. Sproles, age 60, of Mitchell, passed away on at 4:25 p.m. on Tuesday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

He was born on Dec. 27, 1951, in Bedford, to James T. and Mary (Wagoner) Sproles, Jack married Charlotte “Sissy” Terry on Dec. 24, 1998, in Mitchell and she survives.

Jack was a chemical engineer for Riley Industries, and owned the Frog Pond Antique Shop in Mitchell

Most people who met Jack usually never forgot him. With his giving nature, friendly attitude and contagious laughter, he shared his love for life with everyone he met.

Survivors include his loving wife, Charlotte “Sissy” Sproles of Mitchell; one son, Tim Sproles and wife Paris of Greenwood; one stepson, Jack Robbins of Indianapolis; one stepdaughter, Carrie Rock and husband Chris of Maryland; five grandchildren; two brothers, Jim Sproles and wife Carolyn of Bedford and Donnie Boling and wife Belinda of New Castle; three sisters, Judy Hamilton and Areonna England of Oolitic, Deanna Pemberton and husband Jerry of Mitchell and Debbie Kinder of Shoals.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law Roe Hamilton.

Michael Joe Murphy, 604 19th St., Bedford, died Saturday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital in Bedford at the age of 68.

Mike was a graduate of Bedford High School, 1961. He married Loretta Sue Raines on December 30 the next year, and she survives.

Mike retired as a brakeman from the Milwaukee Railroad. He later worked at, and retired from, the Ford-Visteon plant in Bedford, where he was a member of IUE-CWA Local 907, and served as chief shop steward.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Charles and Evelyn Murphy; two brothers, Richard Murphy and Pat Murphy; one grandson, Sheldon Gearlds; and two nephews, John Murphy and Matt Murphy.

Surviving are one brother, Jack Murphy and wife Joyce of Union, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, Connie Murphy and Rita Murphy, both of Bedford; his three children, Scott Murphy and fiancée Andrea George, Jackie Murphy and Kenneth Murphy, all of Bedford. He is also survived by grandchildren, Micah Murphy, Alyssa Murphy, Seamus Murphy, Jesse Owens, Timothy Moody, Mariah Moody, Mahala Jarrard and Victoria George.

Mike had a great love and passion for all his family and friends, lively conversation, telling jokes, and good old fashioned “horse trading.”

Mike was baptized at the Mitchell Wesleyan church and he held fast to his faith in God and in his ultimate salvation.

He will be greatly missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him.

A memorial will be at the UAW Hall, 1411 H St., Bedford on Friday. Guests will be received for visitation beginning at 5 p.m. with service conducted by Pastor Kenny Dalton at 7 p.m. Food and refreshments will be provided after the service for anyone who would like to stay with the family and celebrate Mike’s life and all he has meant to us. Flowers may be sent to the UAW Hall on Friday.

Born Jan. 4, 1950, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Paul Fish and Joann (Stultz) Fish Horner. She married Toby Todd on Feb. 27, 1972, and he survives.

She was a bus driver with the North Lawrence Community School Corporation for 31 years. She was a member of the Mount Pleasant Christian Church and a graduate of Heltonville High School with the Class of 1968.

She loved spending time with her kids and grandkids.

Survivors include her husband, Toby of Heltonville; her mother, Joann Horner of Bedford; two sons, Trent Todd and wife Erin of Heltonville, Troy Todd and wife Jody of Martinsville; five grandchildren, Grant, Graycen, Truman, Anabelle and Laney Todd; one sister, Sherry Baker and husband Tracy of Bedford; and seven nieces and nephews, Danielle Fish, Brad Baker, Tim Baker, Patrick Todd, Lacey Russell, Casey Todd and Tyler Moore.

She was preceded in death by her father, Paul Fish and her stepfather, Jim Horner.

Ruby B. Wagner, 86, of Bedford, went to be with the Lord at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, surrounded by her family and the loving staff at Johnson Christian Village.

Born Sept. 6, 1925, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of James and O’Dessie (Cummings) George. She married Robert L. Wagner on Sept. 27, 1947 in Terre Haute, and he survives.

She was employed with General Motors Powertrain for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

She was a member of the Fairview Community Church, and a retired member of the UAW Local 440.

Surviving is her husband, Robert L. Wagner of Bedford; son, Everett (Susan) Wagner of Bedford; grandson, Aaron (Kasie) Wagner of Springfield, Ill.; great-grandson, Elijah Jacob Wagner of Springfield, Ill.; sister, Catherine McClendon of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Elsie Johnson, Betty Ross and Amanda LeFollette; and four brothers: Robert, Dayton, Verlin and Elmer George.

Wesley H. Baker, 83, of Bedford and formerly of Bloomington and Columbus, died early Sunday morning at Garden Villa of Bedford.

He was born in Monroe County, on December 22, 1928, the son of Rodney and Mary (Brumwell) Baker. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1946.

He worked for 20 years at the former Stoute’s Pharmacy and also at Indiana University before becoming self-employed in carpentry and wood working. He and his wife owned and operated the “Calico-N-Wood” Craft Shop for several years in Unionville.

He was a member of Little Union Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Wesley K. (wife Linda) Baker of Tennessee, Debi (husband Mike) Barnes of Newburgh, Cindy (husband Pat) Cleary of Prestonburg, Ky., Pastor Randy (wife Teresa) Baker of Bedford and Lori Whaley of Columbus; 16 grandchildren, Victoria Van Hentenryck, Victor W. He was employed at Samco in Bedford for several years and was a member of the Bedford Moose Lodge since 1975.

William Dane Hamilton Sr. of 543 Arthur Rd, Springville, died peacefully in the home of his daughter, Ruth Guarneri on Sunday at 99 years of age.

Born Oct. 17, 1912, in Warrenton, Va., he was the son of Le Roy and Mary Easter (Waddell) Hamilton.

He served in the South Pacific in Army Corps of Engineers during World War II and was a master carpenter by trade.

He was a member of Harrodsburg Assembly of God. He will always be remembered as a kind, soft-spoken Christian who wholeheartedly loved and served God and his family. He always encouraged everyone to find answers for life in the Bible, to love and follow Jesus, and to be ready when God calls us home.

He married Martha A. (Herman) Hamilton and Jean H. (Dowling) Hamilton, who both preceded him in death; along with his parents, two brothers, three sisters, a stepson and a great-great grandson.

He is survived by sons, William D. (Susie) Hamilton Jr. of Bedford and John H. (Barbara) Hamilton of Lakeland, Fla.; and daughters, Ruth Guarneri of Springville and Phyllis Hamilton (Gary) Vernon of Norfolk, Va.; a stepdaughter, Addie Jean O’Boyle of Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Mary Amtower of Keyser, W.Va.; a brother, Clarence Hamilton of New Middletown, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

She held many jobs including at Lincoln Plaza Pharmacy.

She loved the outdoors, camping and horseback riding.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Brock of Norman; her mother, Essie Dell Blackwell of Heltonville; son, Justin and Lana Blackwell of Norman; daughter, Whitney Brock of Norman; brother, Steve and Beth Blackwell; two sisters, Sharlene Christenberry and John Ford and Sharon and Steve Johnson, all of Heltonville; and five grandchildren, Alli Robertson, Larissa Blackwell, Garrett Blackwell, Wyatt Blackwell and Brooke Phipps.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Donald E. Jones Sr., 66, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away Jan. 16 at Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix after a short illness.

Born July 2, 1945, in Mitchell, he was the son of Claude and Edna Marie (Roberts) Jones.

He worked at PRD in Springville, PTS in Bloomington and PCA in Phoenix. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

On Feb. 14, 2000, he married Donna Clayton, who survives him; along with four sisters, Rose Gentry and Betty Matthew of Mitchell, Bonnie Wilson of Campbellsburg and Sue Ann Jones of Bedford; four children, Pam Jones of Florida, Pepper and Roger Jones of Waco, Texas an Donald Jones Jr. of Bloomington; five stepchildren, Tammy Elder of Las Vegas, Nev., Timothy Whittaker of Phoenix, Tiffany Ridlen of Bedford and Thomas and Terry Whittaker of Ischua, N.Y.; two adopted children, Tammy and Eddie Wright of Heltonville; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; plus several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Carl “Bud,” Daryl and Pete Jones; and sisters, Jenny Jones and Aletha White, all of Mitchell.

She was married to Vernon Jack Allen on October 16, 1954; they were married for 24 years.

She was a homemaker and worked at the Times-Mail and also Older Americans.

She attended Free Methodist Church for her last three years and was a long time member of Faith Mission Church. She was also a member of Phi Beta Psi Sorority.

Joe was born on Feb. 5, 1935, in Lawrence County, to Otis B. and Frona E. (Ryan) Ray. He married W. Joan Wininger on May 28, 1955, at the East Oolitic Baptist Church and she survives.

Joe was a self-employed master carpenter; he built homes, and also owned Hoosier Cabinets in Bedford for many years.

Joe was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Bedford; he also belonged to the Leesville Masonic Lodge.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, W. Joan Ray of Bedford; and his two children, Renee (Ray) Neal and husband Dennis of Bedford and Barry C. Ray and wife Dee of Bedford; grandchildren, Michael England and wife Marci, Matthew England and wife Robyn, J.D. Bill E. Watson, 76, passed away at 1:10 p.m. Thursday at Indiana University Health Bedford.

Born Feb. 20, 1935, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Lawrence (Red) Watson and Clara (Miles) Shoopman. He married Carol L. Pemberton Feb. 10, 1956, and she preceded him in death June 24, 2011.

He had been employed as building commissioner for the City of Mitchell and retired from Naval Weapons Support Center—Crane.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, and Spring Mill FOP.

Bill was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post No. 250.

Surviving are sons, Bryan Keith (Sheila) Watson, Barry Kent (Charlotte) Watson, and Brent Kelly (Pam) Watson, all of Mitchell; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

His parents and wife preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Jones officiating. Burial will be in Lawrenceport Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.

James Edward Starr Sr.

Aug. 24, 1937 — Feb. 2, 2012

James Edward Starr Sr., 74, Bedford, died at 9 a.m. Thursday at his residence.

He was born Aug. 24, 1937, in Utica, Ky., to the late John Curtis and Sylvia (Flynn) Starr. He was married to Mavis Sykes Starr, and she preceded him in death in 1989.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Starr and James Starr Jr., both of Bedford and Patrick Starr of Indianapolis; daughters, Debora (Sykes) Suiters of Bowling Green, Ky., and Tricia Borden of Bedford; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Johnnie Starr of Bedford, Michael Starr of Medora and Ronnie Starr of Sellersburg; sisters, Jamie Cheek of Kurtz, Rae Ann Sherrill of Kurtz, Arlene Forrest of Clearspring, Betty Hamilton of Brownstown and Brenda Kay Starr of Brownstown; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis and Robert Starr and three sisters, Mary Gale Abel, Virginia Fortner and June Warrick.

Mr. Starr was of the Christian faith.

He was a welder for 20 years at Indiana Steel in Bedford before retiring.

He served in the U.S. Army in the late 1950s and was stationed in Germany as a sergeant.

He loved fishing, rabbit hunting and being on the river spending time with his brothers.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hague Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Persinger officiating. Burial will be in Pinhook Cemetery in Lawrence County, with full graveside military rites by VFW Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, DAV, Korean and Vietnam Veterans, all of Seymour.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday and from 10 a.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be designated to Hoosier Christian Village Auxilary, Brownstown.

Adilyne Lee Kristan

Adilynne Lee Kristan, was stillborn on at 2:40 a.m. Thursday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. She was the daughter of Krista Ross and Jason Kristan.

Survivors include her parents Krista Ross and Jason Kristan of Mitchell, sisters, Kylie Kristan, Kasia Kristan and Kinsley Kristan, all of Bloomington; grandparents, Rene Kristan Daniell of Bedford, Tracy and Jim Flora of Mitchell and Jerry Ross Jr. of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Richard P. Ervin Sr.

Richard P. Ervin Sr., 76, Shoals, died on Wednesday.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at Shoals American Legion Post No. 61. Burial to follow at Spring Hill Cemetery in Shoals. White River Cremation Center through Cresthaven Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Paul ‘P.R.’ Brown

Paul “P.R.” Brown, 45, of Bedford, died at 8:03 a.m. Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born July 26, 1966, in Seymour, he was the son of Norman C. and Mary Alice (Leader) Brown.

He married Pam Tincher on Nov. 18, 1989; and she survives.

He was a 1984 graduate of Brownstown High School; and graduated in 1989 from the University of Evansville with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

He was employed as a mechanical engineer at NWSC Crane for 22 years.

Surviving are his wife, Pam Brown of Bedford; one son, Devin Paul Brown at home; his parents, Norman C. and Mary Alice Brown of Freetown; one sister, Anne Marie (Bryan) Martin of Freetown; two nieces, Wendy and Kelly Martin, both of Freetown; maternal grandmother, Esther Leader of Hartford City; one aunt, Carol Ann Parker of Hartford City; one uncle, David E. Leader of Boise, Idaho; and several cousins.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford, with Pastor Larry Tedrow officiating. Burial will be in Houston Cemetery in Jackson County.

Friends may call from 2–8 p.m. on Friday, and 11 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Kevin S. George

Kevin S. George, 50, of Bedford, died at 4:40 p.m. on Monday at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born Nov. 29, 1961, in Bedford, he was the son of Stanley and Evelyn (Bunch) George.

He was a 1980 graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School. He was previously a welder before becoming disabled.

Surviving are two daughters, Jennifer Morris of Bedford and Krista George of Paoli; two grandchildren, Elyjah Houston of Bedford and Amaya Morris of Danville; two brothers, Jim George and Randy George, both of Bedford; two sisters, Karen Morley of Florida and Luann Strunk of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and three brothers.

There will be no calling. Cremation has been chosen.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Edna M. Moffitt

Edna Magnolia Moffitt, age 89, of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday at the home of her daughter.

On June 24, 1950, Edna married her soul mate William “Bill;” he preceded her in death on July 14, 2004. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Etha (Foley) Roy; her brothers, Monroe, Gilbert Doyle and Lloyd; and her sisters, Maymie Gee-Gee and Eva.

She is survived by her daughters, Barbara Smith of Stillwater, Okla., Donna Moffitt of Bedford and Beverly Moffitt of Bloomington; grandchildren, Erica Mitchell, Bobbi Cummings, Autumn Lowry, Adam Dawson and Amanda Smith; great-grandchildren, Samara Lenning, Alexis Mitchell, William Elijah Langley and Xander Smith; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Edna owned and operated the Lindley House Hotel in the 1950s in Mitchell, After moving to Bedford, she was a waitress at the Greystone Hotel and The Elks Club, she also worked at Crane N,aval base.

She was a wonderful mother, wife and grandmother, dedicating her spare time to her family.

Edna’s battle with Alzheimer’s started years ago. With the love and care of her family and caregivers, she was one of the longest survivors of the disease. She will truly be missed – Her Big Brown Eyes could light up a room.

Private family services are at Cresthaven Funeral Home, burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Thelma Jean McPike

Thelma Jean (Todd) McPike, 86, Linton, died Wednesday.

She was born July 6, 1925, in Heltonville to Grotie and Lilly Fern (Helton) Todd.

She had worked at H&R Block, a sales clerk for Aldens and was a member of Sherwood Oaks Church in Bloomington.

She is survived by one brother, David and Jerri Todd of Columbus; five sisters, Sandy and Herb Lynch of Linton, Peggy and Dwight Jones of Heltonville, Velva Stevenson of Stinesville, Lydia Hooker of Ellettsville and Brenda and Larry Norman of Heltonville; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William McPike; five brothers, Ervin, Wesley, John Earl, Frank E. and Lester Todd.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Friday. Service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jones Funeral Home in Heltonville. Burial will follow at Judah Cemetery.

Larry G. Phemister

Larry G. Phemister, 71, of 8378 State Road 58, Bedford, died Saturday at his residence.

Born May 19, 1940, in Carterville, Ill., he was the son of Cleve and Verna (Barriger) Phemister. He married Betty Woods Roll and she preceded him in death. He later married Joann Zike and she also preceded him in death.

He retired from Bruner Engineering and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include stepchildren, Kenny Roll and wife Vickie of Martinsville, John Roll of Bedford, Lois Burnside and husband Ron of Vallonia, Kenneth William Taylor and wife Penny of Bedford, and Connie Prairie and husband Jim of Vallonia; several stepgrandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; both wives; and a stepson, Richard Roll.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Gary Eads officiating. Cremation will follow.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the service on Thursday at the mortuary.
