Andrea Nickless

Dec. 21, 1946 — Nov. 28, 2011

Andrea “Suzie” Nickless, 64, of Oolitic, died on Monday at 2:45 p.m. at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Dec. 21, 1946 in Bedford, she was the daughter of Reed M. and Hester Jane (Hawkins) Blackburn.

She married Bruce Nickless on Dec. 15, 1966 in Lawrence County.

She was a teacher at Needmore Elementary School, retiring after 31 years of service.

She was a graduate of Bedford High School, Class of 1964, and received her Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University.

She was a member of the Bedford Seventh Day Adventist Church; Eastern Star of Bedford; Indiana State Teachers Association; Retired Teachers Association and a four-time award recipient of Who’s Who American Teachers.

Surviving are her husband, Bruce Nickless of Oolitic; two sons, Monty (Kim) Nickless of Bedford and Drew Nickless of Bloomington; one daughter, Mandie (Tony) Gonzales of Woodbridge, Va.; seven grandchildren; one brother, Doug Blackburn of Bedford; two sisters, Judy Carlson of Coral Springs, Fla., and Roxi Blackburn of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Monty Blackburn.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Following the burial, a reception will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Church School Gym, located at 1700 North Pike in Needmore.

Clarence Dalton

Feb. 1, 1958 — Nov. 28, 2011

Clarence “Corky” Dalton, Jr., age 53, of Bedford, passed away at his residence at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. He was born on Feb. 1, 1958 in Portland, Ore., to Clarence and Gloria (Beadle) Dalton, Sr. Corky married Donna Simmons on March 1, 1996, in Tennessee, and she survives. Corky attended Bedford North Lawrence High School and served 10 years in the U.S. Navy. He was a truck driver for Relco in Bedford. He loved his pet dogs.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Dalton of Bedford; his mother, Gloria Dalton of Bedford; three sons, Don Earl Dalton of Utah, Danny Dalton of West Virginia and John Dalton of Utah; one stepdaughter, Anita Dennison of Mitchell; sisters, Cheryl Robbins and husband Jim of Bedford, Kathleen Baker of Bedford, Donnita Bell and husband Zendell of Bedford; one brother, Robert Dalton and wife Kathleen of California; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Corky was preceded in death by his father, Clarence Dalton, Sr.; his grandparents, Henry and Elizabeth Dalton, and Bill and Dorothy Henderson, and a nephew, Harry Baker III.

Cremation was chosen with a memorial service at a later date.

Joe’l Cassidy

Sept. 25, 1975 — Nov. 27, 2011

Joe’l Lake Giardine-Cassidy, 36, West Baden Springs, passed away at 10:15 a.m. Sunday at Jewish Hospital, Louisville, Ky.

Joe’l was born on Sept. 25, 1975, to Joel Giardine and Shirley Jean Lake. She married Patrick Cassidy on June 9, 2002, and he survives.

She grew up in Levittown, Pa., and was a 1994 graduate of Pennsbury High School in Fallsington, Pa., where she was a proud flautist in the “Long Orange Line” Marching Band. She attended Bucks County Community College before working for Empire Blue Cross and later for Aetna. In Indiana she assisted in the dental practice of Dr. Sills. Joe’l was a happily adopted Hoosier and most enjoyed her immediate and extended family and her community. She was anticipating entering her emerald green pickles in next year’s county fair. Joe’l eagerly accepted the challenge of home schooling her adored daughter, Bella. She also was very involved with her daughter with Acorns to Oaks Home School Coop, Keepers at Home and 4-H. She is also a member of Dogwood Christian Church.

She is survived by her father, Joel Giardine of Levittown, Pa.; mother, Shirley Lake of Martinsville, and her loving husband and daughter, Patrick and Bella Cassidy of West Baden Springs; her in-laws, Jim and Judy Cassidy of Orleans; grandmothers, Irene Lake of Osprey, Fla., and Rose Giardine of Levittown, Pa.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Missy and Darren Tye of West Baden Springs; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral arrangements are by T.L. Pinnick Mortuary, French Lick, where the family will receive friends on Thursday from 2-8 p.m. and again on Friday from 9-10 a.m. The funeral service will be held, Friday at 10 a.m. at the mortuary with the Rev. Anthony Moore officiating. Interment will be in the Bethel Church Cemetery, West Baden Springs.

Victoria P. Kern

Feb. 22, 1918 — Nov. 25, 2011

Victoria P. Kern, 93, Gas City, died at 10:40 p.m, Friday in Twin City Health Care. She was born in Waipio Valley, Hawaii to the late Samuel and A’keao (Akana) Kaaekuahiwi. She married William L. Kern on Aug. 21, 1943. He preceded her in death on May 30, 1987.

Victoria retired from the Marion VA Medical Center where she worked as chief dietician. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Williams. Victoria enjoyed outdoor activities, gardening, canning, fishing, word search puzzles and animals, especially dogs. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Funeral service will be at 6 p.m., Wednesday at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN with Mick Simpkins officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ Cemetery, Williams. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Survivors include a daughter, Rosa (Rickie) Plummer of Gas City, grandchildren, Crystal Smith of Gas City, Kellie (Greg) Turner of Huber Heights, Ohio; Adam (Alicia Williamson) Plummer of Gas City, Cory Plummer of Gas City, great-grandchildren, Austin Smith, Cayleigh Turner, Cohen Turner, Athan Plummer and Xavier Plummer; sister, Ellie Balsimo, Nisswa, Minn.; brother, Ted (Nancy) Kaaekuahiwi, Honokaa, Hawaii; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Betty Jean Poe, age 86, of Campbellsburg passed away Sunday at 11:40 a.m. at Mitchell Manor.

Mrs. Poe was born June 9, 1925, in Bedford, the daughter of Isaac and Gladys Fleetwood Drew. She was retired owner of P & F Wholesale Specialty Advertising and a Mary Kay consultant. She was a member of Livonia Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Perry Everett Poe and his wife, Cindy, of Campbellsburg and David Andrew “Andy” Dunwoody and his wife, Vicky, of Mitchell; a daughter, Rebecca Jean “Becky” Holt and her husband, Calvin, of Brownsville, Ky.; a brother, William Dean Drew of Batesville; 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Bernadene Jane Drew McIntosh.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Livonia Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Claysville Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 4-8 p.m. at Weathers Funeral Home and Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

William Donaldson

Feb. 15, 1922 — Nov. 26, 2011

Lifetime Lawrence County resident and local businessman William J. (Bill) Donaldson died Saturday evening at his birthplace. He was born Feb. 15, 1922, to James and Elisabeth (Selkirk) Donaldson. He was a 1939 graduate of Bedford High School and a member of the First Presbyterian Church.

Following his high school graduation, he attended Indiana University and worked at Montgomery Ward. He joined the Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in New Delhi, India, for three years. He served his country as a cryptologist, decoding invaluable messages to protect our country. Upon honorable discharge, he returned to work at Montgomery Ward and married Elisabeth (Libby) Cannon, who preceded him in death.

He was very interested in architectural and interior design, so he enrolled at Purdue University and completed his degree in the design field. For many years, he was employed by Triangle-Leahy, where he designed numerous kitchens for residences in and around Lawrence County.

His sister, Jessie (Jay), then owner of Jay Donaldson Real Estate, convinced him to get a real estate license and work with her in 1978. Following her death in 1987, “Mr. Bill,” as his friends knew him, took over the business, which became Bedford’s largest real estate agency in the mid-1990s and where he worked until his passing.

Surviving are a step-daughter, Peggy Andis; nephew, Tom Burks, and step-granddaughter, Susi Stevens (Mark) and family, all of Indianapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Libby; four sisters, Euphamia, Alyce, Jessie (Jay) and Elsie Donaldson Burks, and one brother, Gordon.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011, at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Friends may call Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m.

Love Dunaway

Love Earlene Dunaway, 94, of Bedford, formerly of Decatur, quietly passed away Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, in her daughter’s home.

Graveside services to celebrate Love’s life will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at Graceland Cemetery. Love was born March 13, 1917 in Enfield, Ill., the daughter of Curtis and Ethel (McCarthy) Clark. She had a long and fruitful life dedicated to her family, friends and community. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a founding member of Christ United Methodist Church. She was married to William Dunaway Sr. for 66 years. He preceded her in death.

She is survived and honored by her daughter Trudy Dunaway Brown, son William Dunaway Jr. and wife Karen, and grandchildren, Eric Brown, Lisa Brown and husband Wesly Berneberg, and Renee Fiscus and husband Paul, and great-granddaughter Skye Fasnacht.

Kenneth Mikels

Kenneth Mikels, 79, of Springfield, Mo., passed away peacefully in his home Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011. He was born Nov. 4, 1932, in Bedford, Ind., to Ralph Sr. and Eula (Love) Mikels. Kenneth served in the United States Army from 1955 to 1957. He retired from SMSU on Nov. 26, 1997. He was then employed with Midwest Security as a security guard from 1993 until 2009.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ralph Jr.

Kenneth is survived by his wife Norma of the home; his daughter Mary and her husband David of Springfield; daughter Kelley and her husband Randy of Bois’D Arc and a daughter Rita and her husband Harold of Republic; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; two sisters Frieda Wright and her husband Ray of California and Lovetta Baldwin of Indiana and a host of other family.

Morris ‘Wes’ Norman

Sept. 8, 1935 — Nov. 25, 2011

Morris (Wes) Norman, 76, of Bedford, died at 12:40 a.m. on Friday, November 25, 2011 at his residence.

Born September 8, 1935, he was the son of John and Dorothy Helen (Crouch) Norman. He married Sharon Morron on August 22, 1961, and she survives. He was a quarry worker and had worked for M.J.B. and Norman Plastics. He had served in the U.S. Army for two years and the National Guard for two years. During this time, he was stationed in Germany for eighteen months. He was a member of the Old Chapel Hill Church and loved to hunt, fish and spend time with his grandchildren whom he loved dearly. He loved bluegrass music played by the Norman family.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon, of Bedford; two sons, Mark W. Norman and wife, Kristi, and Timmy Norman; one daughter, Melissa J. Norman-Barrett, all of Bedford; six grandchildren, Tegan Hall, Brittany Norman, Brandi Barrett, Bryant Norman, Sarah Norman and Emily May Norman; five great-grandchildren, Sierra, Carmine and Cole Salazar, Brooklyn Boone and Leighton Norman; two brothers, Gerald Norman and wife, Susan of Heltonville, and Clarence Norman, of Greenwood; three sisters, Norma Hillenburg of Greenwood, Shirley Hearth and husband, Lebert, Judy Quebbeman and husband, Ronnie, all of Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Norman of Bedford; and a son-in-law, Doug Barrett of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wayne and Everett Dale Norman; and two sisters, Marge Todd and Glenda Sowders.

Emma J. (Williamson) Robertson, 75, of Nashville, died Thursday at her residence. She was born May 4, 1936, in Erwin, Tennessee, to George Alvin and Mary Williamson.

She is survived by three sons, Donald Lee Robertson and Shelly, of Indianapolis, Anthony Lee Robertson and Midge, of Bloomington, and Timothy Lee Robertson and Jill, of Bedford; two brothers, Harry Williamson and Alvin Williamson, both of Erwin, Tennessee; three sisters, Colleen Miller, of Jonesboro, Tennessee, Aubra Sawyer, of Swannanoa, North Carolina, and Beatrice Williamson, of Erwin, Tennessee; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son Danial Robertson.

Jeanna S. Heckman (Arthur), 54, of Bloomfield, Ky. and formerly of Springville, died at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday at Kindred Hospital-Louisville at Jewish Hospital.

Born Sept. 19, 1957, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Roy and Virginia (Meadows) Arthur.

She worked as a call center supervisor at L&N Credit Union in Louisville, Ky.

She graduated from BNL, class of 1975 then attended Sullivan Business College.

Surviving are father, Roy Arthur of Springville; two sisters, Tina (Chuck) Moore of Springville, and Tiana Caraway (Terry) of Springville; two brothers, Robin (Nancy) Arthur of Springville, and Roy Dennis Arthur of Springville; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother and one nephew, Kyle Davis.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday Nov. 29, 2011, at the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Frank Ira officiating. Burial will be in Byers-Rainbolt Cemetery.

Leona Faye Stroud, 72, Mitchell, passed away at 6:20 p.m. Wednesday at her residence.

Born April 13, 1939, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Robert and Mary (Treadway) Kent.

She had been employed at Mitchell Manor for 20 years.

Surviving: children, Doyle Stroud of Anderson, Gary Stroud of Williams, Darla Puffer of Aurora, Colo,, Donavon Stroud of Greenwood, Robert Stroud of Statesville, N.C., Eric Stroud of Mitchell and Rhonda Randolph of Virginia Beach, Va.; 18 grandchildren, six grandchildren, and siblings, Robert “Buddy” Kent of Mitchell, Agatha Kimble of Mitchell, Joseph Kent of Mitchell, Roger Kent of Bloomington, Regina Long of Camby, David Kent of Mitchell and Donald Kent of San Francisco, Calif.

Her parents, daughter Donna Stroud and sister Ruth Kent preceded her in death.

Manley O. Wever

March 24, 1918 — Nov. 24, 2011

Manley O. Wever, 93, of Orleans, died Thursday at the StoneBridge Health Campus in Bedford.

Manley was born March 24, 1918 in Lostant, Ill. He was the son of John N. and Leona Ethel Brown Wever.

He retired from Bruner Engineering in Bedford in 1981. He was an Army Veteran. He married Helen Book Wever July 4, 1974, and she preceded him in death on June 1, 2004.

He is survived by two sons, Gary Steve (Terri) Wever and Randy Wever, all of Bedford. One daughter, Susan (Doug) Tolliver of Bedford survives, and a stepdaughter, Sally Wycoff, also of Bedford survives. There are three brothers, William Wever of Neoga, Ill., Arthur Wever of Morris, Ill., and John Wever of Salem, Ill. A sister Jean Alexander of Effingham, Ill., survives. There are five grandchildren, Melissa (Dan) Nicholson, Marcy (Bud) Simmerman, Melanie (Mike) Prince, Troy (Stacey) Tolliver and Shawn (April) Tolliver. There are 14 great-grandchildren, two step grandchildren, Mike Hurd and Jennifer (Mike) Morales and seven step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Kibler and a brother Max Wever.

The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans. Pallbearers will be Troy Tolliver, Shawn Tolliver, Mike Prince, Bud Simmerman, Danny Simmerman and Josh Nicholson. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Orleans with military rites by the Orleans American Legion, Warren Brock Post No. 69.

James Williams

Feb. 17, 1917 — Nov. 21, 2011

James I. Williams, 94, Mitchell, died Monday at Garden Villa in Bedford of pneumonia.

Jim Williams was born in Lee County, Va., on Feb. 17, 1917. Jim graduated from Flatwoods High School in 1938. He enlisted in the Air Force on Oct. 24, 1940, and Jim “G.I.” Williams served as a Staff Sergeant air plane parts specialist in the Southwest Pacific Theatre with the 2nd Service Squadron 5th Air Force. He returned to the U. S. Jan. 19, 1945, and received an honorable discharge on Aug. 28, 1945.

Jim married his high school sweetheart, Wanda (Hedrick) Williams on Jan. 31, 1945. They lived in Bristol, Tenn., prior to moving to Mitchell, Ind. Jim retired from the Honey-Krust/Colonial/Bunny Bread Bakery in Bedford, in 1982 after 31 years. Jim enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping with family and friends.

He was a member of Jacob Finger United Methodist Church, and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM in Mitchell, an Indiana charter member of the Jolly Sam’s Camping Club, and an active participant in the 2nd Service Squadron 5th Air Force reunions.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Lillie (Grear) Williams; one son, James I. Williams, Jr.; and two sisters, Nancy Stiff and Alice Marcum.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 ½ years, Wanda Williams of Mitchell; one daughter, Patsy Porter (Ed) of Avon, Ind.; three granddaughters, Cathy Porter, Cheri Carver (Joe), Mandi Grubb; four great granddaughters, Ashlynn, Jessica, Allyson, and Kylie; two sisters, Ruth Gibson of Jonesville, Virginia Billie Leiberman of Sunrise, Fla.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jacob Finger United Methodist Church with Rev. Eric Kersey and Rev. Karen E. Devaisher officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Stephen L. Sowders, 64, Leesville, passed away at 6:24 a.m. on Saturday at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born on March 28, 1947, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Delmar Sowders and O. Kathleen (Morrow) Sowders. He married Mary E. Keel on May 20, 1975, and she survives.

Stephen was a restaurant owner, member of the I.C. Mission Church and Masonic Lodge and was a Shriner.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary of Leesville; are one son, S. Brett Sowders and his wife Ginger A. of Heltonville; one daughter, Ginger Harrington and husband Jesse; one granddaughter, Shelby Sowders of Heltonville; two step granddaughters, Jessalyn and Emily Harrington; three brothers, Larry, Brad and Scott Sowders; and one sister, Rheadawn Inman.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Norma Bridwell and Pat Hamilton.

Memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday from the Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Dennis Temple officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the service on Saturday.

Following the service, from 3-5 p.m., family and friends are invited to a dinner at the community center in Leesville.

Born April 8, 1927, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Henry Aden and Mayme Ferrell (Roberts) Taylor. She married Eldon Lavern Cornelison on Sept. 15, 1947, and he survives.

She was a homemaker and member of the New Union Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Eldon of Bedford; three brothers, Lowell, Perry and Don Taylor; four sisters, Norma, June, Jane and Ada; a daughter-in-law, Wanda Cornelison; two grandchildren, Ryan Matthew Cornelison and Jenelle Ann Brooks; three great-grandchildren, Dalton Cornelison, and Luna and Gideon Brooks; two brothers-in-law, Delvin and Dorvin Cornelison; one sister-in-law, Joy Haun; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Eldon Eugene; one daughter, Brenda Darlene; three brothers, Robert, Chester and Karroll Taylor; a sister, Mayme Ferrell (in infancy); and one brother-in-law, Onel Cornelison.

Dylan Charles Duncan, 24, of Bedford, died Sunday in Bedford.

Born June 30, 1987, he was the son of Charles Duncan and Anna Blackwell.

He was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School with the Class of 2006.

He was employed by J.M. Blackwell General Contracting and attended the First Church of God in Bedford.

Survivors include his mother, Anna Blackwell and husband Jason; his father, Charles Duncan and wife Dyan, all of Bedford; four sisters, Miranda Duncan, Grace Eggles, Jenna Blackwell and Addison Duncan, all of Bedford; his maternal grandmother, Linda Andis of Bedford; aunts and uncles, Jeff and Alicia Albietz of Heltonville, Barry and Carla Wade and Lana Eicle, all of Bedford; and a niece, Brylee Pursell.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Jerry Andis; and his paternal grandparents, Russell and Mary Frances Duncan.

Lester MacDonald, 81, of Bedford, passed away at 11:46 a.m. on Monday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Lester was born on July 20, 1930, in Elnora, to Lester and Madje (Wilson) MacDonald. He married Alice “Jackie” Daugherty on Nov. 27, 1947, at the First Church of God in Bedford; she preceded him in death on Aug. 22, 2008.

Lester was a 1947 graduate of Bedford High School, he was Bedford’s town Santa during the 1960s and 1970s, and he retired from the Bedford Block & Concrete Company.

Lester was a member of the Bedford Baptist Temple.

Survivors include four sons, David MacDonald of Winslow, Roy E. MacDonald and wife Jan of Ohio, Jon M. MacDonald and wife Jennifer of Mitchell and Victor MacDonald of Bedford; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Sue Newport of Bedford.

Lester was preceded in death by his parents; wife Alice “Jackie” MacDonald; and one brother, Dean MacDonald.

Violet McMahan

The daughter of the late Fred and Pearl Alda Smith, Violet was born in Lawrence County 90 years ago.

Her death occurred peacefully at home in Bloomington, surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years, The Rev. Donald F. McMahan, a retired Methodist minister. Also living in Bloomington are her son, The Rev. Larry W. McMahan; her daughter, Susan E. Stein; and her granddaughter, Jessica Anne Stein. Violet is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Marvin York in Mitchell; her sister-in-law, Ruth Evelyn Padgett of Bedford,; and many nieces and nephews.

She was graduated from Mitchell High School in April, 1939. She also married her husband, Donald, in 1939, and worked in the Registrar’s Office at Indiana University where he was a student.

Violet was an integral and gracious part of her husband’s pastorates in Greene and Monroe Counties, the Indiana towns of Raub, Remington, Crawfordsville, and Plainfield, as well as his administrative ministries as the Superintendent for the Greencastle, Lebanon, and South Bend Districts of the Methodist Church, and as a director of two Methodist homes for the aged, Haven Hubbard in South Bend and Asbury Towers in Greencastle.

Violet and Donald enjoyed traveling in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, cruising among the Caribbean Islands, and exploring Alaska.

She also loved gourmet cooking and welcoming people into her home. She was an avid reader.

As a pianist she delighted in the performances of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. She also liked art, especially paintings by Georgia O’Keefe and other modern artists.

At home she enjoyed her flower garden and playing bridge with friends.

In the 1990s, Violet was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bloomington Hospital. As a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority in earlier years she participated in medical outreach programs. She also loved being a part of the local P.E.O. women’s organization for the last 20 years.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington. A final visitation will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Bloomington beginning an hour before her funeral from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday. The Rev. Mark Fenstermacher, the Lead Pastor of the congregation, will officiate. The Rev. Charles T. Dupree, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, will assist. Interment will follow at the Cresthaven Cemetery in Bedford.

Robert Wayne Nikirk, 88, of Bedford, died at 12:10 a.m. Saturday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

Born Sept. 25, 1923 in Silverville, he was the son of William Henry and Ona Louise (Turner) Nikirk. He married Phyllis Jackson on Nov. 10, 1946, and she survives.

He was a dispatcher for IRC&D Trucking in Richmond, retiring in 1983.

He was a 1942 graduate of Fayetteville High School.

He was a member of Sugar Grove Methodist Church in Dunkirk.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Nikirk of Bedford; two sons, Alan (Nelda) Nikirk of Bedford and Philip (Marcia) Nikirk of Anderson; three daughters, Nancy Nikirk of Fort Wayne, Clara Shaw of Redkey and Sara Nikirk of Bedford; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Morris (Virginia) Nikirk of Long Island, N.Y., Paul (Peggy) Nikirk of Fayetteville and James (Ann) Nikirk of Bloomington; and two sisters, Wanetta (Kenny) McCain of Elizabethtown and Roseann (Larry) Bell of Mitchell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Merle Nikirk; and one sister, Gail Feltner.

Mary Frances Ball, 89, of Mitchell, passed away at 10 p.m. Saturday at her residence.

Born May 8, 1922, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of Lester and Della (Sanders) Sloan. She married James Emil Ball and he preceded her in death in 1995.

She graduated from Mitchell High School in 1940. She and her husband both graduated from Central Business College in Indianapolis, and met while traveling to Mitchell on the weekends.

They worked at Allisons and lived in Indianapolis for several years. They resided in Mitchell for over 60 years, operating a car business for 40 years.

She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Surviving are children, Marcy Brooks of Williams and James S. (Connie) Ball of Hope; grandchildren, Mary Ann Waggoner of Bloomington, Brian (Kelly) Waggoner of Mitchell, James R. (Megan) Brooks of Bloomington and Sloan K. Ball of Hope; great-grandchildren, Emily Waggoner and Thomas Waggoner; siblings, Charles Sloan of Linton, Dorothy Sears of Ohio and Robert Sloan of Loogootee.

Her parents; husband; and sister, Louise Stepp, preceded her in death.

Paul Norman

Paul Norman, 74, passed away at home with family on Thursday.

He was born Aug. 25, 1937, in Heltonville, to Roy Earl and Eva Norman and was the eighth of 11 children. Three of his siblings have preceded him in death.

Paul married Shirley Easton in 1955 and they had four children. His oldest son, Ronald died in 1999, middle child, Paula Rockwood in 1997, both from complications with their diabetes. Wife Shirley passed on in 2000.

His two remaining children are Kim Fein of Missoula, Mont., and his son, David, who resided with him in the Unionville area, were with him as he passed away at home.

Paul and his family moved to Bloomington in 1963 when he became co-owner of a service station. He also worked at the Cross Town IGA that was on 10th Street. He worked for 20 years for Wetterau Foods and entered retirement at its closing.

Paul will be deeply missed by family and friends. He centered his life around family and enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. A Christian man who had an active church life, he loved to attend hymn sings.

Paul lead an exemplary life and was a blessing to many.

Funeral service to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m., Monday, at Day Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Meadows Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home.

Born Sept. 13, 1924, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Luehama (Williams) Flinn and Oliver Francis Flinn. She married Emerson Row on Aug. 17, 1940, and he passed away on Jan. 6, 2011.

She was a charter member of the Southland Church of Christ and a current member of the Central Church of Christ, a former Pink Lady and had worked at Trav-Ler Radio and Television and RCA.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Eugene Row and wife Kathleen of Bedford, Richard Donald Row and wife Mary Jane of Newville, Pa., and Timothy Alan Row and wife Martha of Huntsville, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

He retired from Indiana Laborers where he did limestone work, was a Veteran of the U.S. Army (active duty), a rabbit hunter and a good father.

Born on Jan. 19, 1928, in Bedford, he was the son of Joseph S. and Mary I. (Dunn) Abel. John married Beverly M. May on June 19, 1954, in Indianapolis.

He worked as a welding technician and retired from Union Carbide Corporation in Speedway.

John was a member of the Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council and St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and playing cards.

Additionally, he was a veteran of the United States Navy who had served in World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Beverly M. May Abel of Greenfield; children, Pamela A. (William L.) Hutchinson of Mishawaka, and Joseph H. (Rose L.) Abel, Brian K. Abel, and Steven J. (Diana M.) Abel, all of New Palestine; grandchildren, Cody, Corey, Chad, Tiffany, Lindsey, Heather, Adam, and Nick; and three great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and brother, Joseph Abel.

Babette C. Stauffer, 49, of Orleans, formerly of Springwater, N.Y., passed away at 3:30 a.m., on Wednesday at her residence.

Babette was born on March 15, 1962, in Dansville, N.Y., to William and Martha Sue (McChesney) Holmes. She married John Stauffer on June 7, 1984, and he survives.

She was a 1980 graduate of Wayland High School and received a degree in photography from Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y.

She enjoyed planting and taking care of her flowers, but her greatest love was doing animal rescue.

She is survived by her parents, William and Martha Sue Holmes of Cadiz, Ky.; her husband, John Stauffer of Orleans; sons, Joshua Stauffer of Evansville and Travis Stauffer of Orleans; and her sister, Chris Haefner of Dallas, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her in-laws, Ira and Joyce Stauffer.

Born Sept. 14, 1927, in Orleans, she was the daughter of Stanley Lewis and Avis (Fielder) Lewis. She married John L. “Jack” Endris on Aug. 19, 1950, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 2004.

She was a high school educator having taught 42 years at Needmore, Shawswick, Bedford and Bedford North Lawrence high schools. She retired in 1993.

She was a 1945 graduate of Bedford High School and obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education from Indiana University, Bloomington. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Bedford, where she was active with the bell choir, an Elder, Deacon and Deaconess.

She was on the Bedford Public Library Board; a member of many educational organizations; past sponsor of the Stone City Student at Bedford High School; chairman of the English Department at both Bedford and Bedford North Lawrence high schools; an avid bowler and fan of IU, Indianapolis Colts and BNL teams; a Pink Lady of the Dunn Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; loved mushroom hunting and euchre and enjoyed traveling. She was a great friend to everybody.

Surviving are one daughter, Jackie (Kevin) Robbins of Bedford; and one son, Mark Endris and fiance’ Dawn Woods, also of Bedford; two grandchildren, J.K. (Brandi) Robbins and Jessica Bunch, both of Bedford; four great-grandchildren, Grant Robbins, and Ava, Addy and Audrey Bunch, Bedford; four nieces, Liz McKenzie and Nancy Strunk of Bedford, and Kelley Wingo of Arizona and Cindy Tomes of Evansville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Mary Beth Dunihue and Linda Parsons.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Bedford with Pastor Bob Dailey officiating. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Denise Mary Neidigh, 58, of Hendricksville, died Saturday at Bell Trace.

Born Aug. 19, 1953, in Mishawaka, she was the daughter of William C. and Joanne (Mortensen) Carter. She married Joseph Neidigh on Nov. 21, 1998, and he survives.

She was employed by Bloom Marketing.

Survivors include a daughter, Laura Hughes of Bedford; stepson Chris Neidigh of Bloomington; three grandchildren Haley Hughes of Bloomington; Zachary Hughes of Bedford; Desirae Neidigh of Bloomington; one brother Daniel C. Ruth Irene Tatom, 92, of Bedford, died at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday at White River Lodge.

Born July 4, 1919, in Bedford, she was the daughter of John Norman and Celia P. (Speer) Root. She married Joe Tatom on April 8, 1944, and he preceded her in death. She retired from Sarkes-Tarzian in Bloomington after 25 years.

She was a member of the Leatherwood Christian Church where she played the piano for many years and was a Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the Ludeans Ladies Group and a Key Lady for the Hoosier Christian Village in Brownstown.

Survivors include a son, Bill Tatom and wife Jill of Bedford; two grandchildren, Mark Tatom and wife April, and Melissa Tatom all of Bloomington; and a niece, Norma Smith and husband Art of Salem.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandchild, Teresa; a brother, Fred Root; and two stepsisters, Marie and Gertie.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Sherman Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Leatherwood Cemetery.

Born July 1, 1925, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Otto and Sophie (Andrews) Mickler. She married Albert Alger Fancher on May 31, 1964, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1979.

She had been employed as a waitress at Chase Inn and was also a nurse’s aide.

Surviving are daughters, Carolyn “Susie” Bigelow and husband John C. Bigelow of Hephzibah, Ga., and Melanie Ann Sullivan and husband Billy D. Sullivan Jr, of Petersburg; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Born Jan. 16, 1940, in New Castle, she was the daughter of Nathaniel and Margaret Tucker.

She was first married to Richard Perkerson; second to Mr. Sheets; and third to Russell David Jones in 1982.

She was a homemaker and retired from J&L Steel, where she worked as an administrative assistant.

She was a graduate of Washington High School in Indianapolis.

Surviving are her husband, Russell David Jones of Bloomington; one son, Dennis Perkerson of Nashville; and one sister, Libby Dean of Avon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one grandson, Michael Perkerson.

Steve graduated from Mitchell High School in 1964 and Indiana State University in 1968. He was a member of Spice Valley Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran.

Rita Smith, 80, of Bloomington, passed away Wednesday at home with her loving family by her side.

She was born July 4, 1931, in Springville, the daughter of Erza and Esther (Zikes) Johnston. She married Vernon Smith on Feb. 25, 1956.

Rita attended Bloomington High School. She retired from RCA in 1992.

She was a beloved wife and mother who loved her family dearly and always had a smile on her face. Rita was an avid IU, Colts and Pacers Fan. She loved fishing, mushroom hunting, going on car rides to the overlook and spending time with her family. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and squirrels from her patio. She was well known for her persimmon pudding.

When she was able, she would donate blood to the American Red Cross and supported United Way and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Rita is survived by her husband of 55 years, Vernon Smith; two sons Steve Smith of Bloomington and Larry Smith of Indianapolis; two sisters Marie Pritchard and Shirley Bryant both of Bloomington and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Randy J. Smith; three sisters, Helen Eads, Roxie Hessinger and Mary Fiscus; five brothers, Clovis, Fred, George, Ralph and Dewey Johnston; and one nephew, Sam Johnston.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Monday at Allen Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.

John Thomas Brown, 82, of Williams, died at 6:20 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born May 22, 1929, in Martin County, he was the son of Ralph and Agnes Levina (Wininger) Brown. He first married Annabelle Sims and she preceded him in death. He then married Mary Stuart on Dec. 22, 2003, and she survives.

He retired as a supervisor for Indiana University and was a farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was an IU Alumni and a member of Crossroads Community Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mar,y of Williams; a daughter, Elizabeth Wilcox, of Mitchell; two stepsons, Michael Bruner of Williams and David Bruner (Janette) of Bloomington; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife; a son, Russell; a sister, Bonnie Moore; and two brothers, Robert and Eugene (Junior).

Billy D. Sullivan

Billy D. Sullivan, 70, of Bedford, died at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at his residence.

Born June 8, 1941, in Bedford, he was the son of William McKinley Sullivan and Josie (Melvin) Sullivan Miller. He married Rita L. Hardwick on July 22, 1961, and she preceded him in death in May 2011.

He worked as a coal miner at B & L S Coal Mining Company for 15 years. He then worked for the State of Indiana Highway Department for 10 years, retiring in 2003.

He was a member of the Salvation Army Church, NRA, National Wildlife Association, and was an avid outdoorsman and lifelong hunter.

He also loved playing the harmonica.

Surviving are three sons, Billy Dean Sullivan Jr. (Melanie) of Petersburg, Robert M. Sullivan (Adrienne) of Jasper, and Tristan W. Sullivan of Bedford; four daughters, Victoria Zoelzer (Craig), Valarie L. Martin (Dennis), and Stacy Pruitt (Robert), all of Bedford, and Ashley Baker of Mitchell; 14 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Helen Good of Bedford, Ruthann Cain of Solsberry, Carol Manuel of Austin, and Lois Ritter, of Bedford; one brother, Joe Sullivan of Bedford; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Rita L. (Hardwick) Sullivan; and several siblings.

Maryann “Granny” Sutton Bradley, 78, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday. She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Jim. Maryann was born March 24, 1933, in Indianapolis, to Charles and Helen (Keith) Sutton.

Maryann dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren and was a loving “Granny” to all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

Maryann worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a clerk and was an avid supporter of St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.

She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Imogene Lantis, 86, of Orleans, entered into rest on Tuesday, at the Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital in Bedford.

Mrs. Lantis was born in Milltown on Jan. 6, 1925. She married John M. Lantis and they maintained a residence in Orleans for 48 years.

She was an active member of the Orleans United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women’s Organization and the Buisness and Professional Women’s Club.

She had interest in sewing, painting and poetry. Throughout her life she created several oil paintings, wrote numerous poems and enjoyed sewing clothing items for her family.

Imogene and John enjoyed traveling around the country and abroad. After retirement, they enjoyed wintering in Texas and Florida for many years.

Imogene’s husband of 68 years preceded her in death, along with her parents, four brothers, and a sister.

She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn (John) Wolf, of Bristol; two sons, John W. (Marilyn) Lantis of Mitchell and Steve (Candy) Lantis of Orleans; one sister, Glenna Mae Windell of Corydon; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Orleans United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jacqueline Foley officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Orleans.

Jerry D. Carter

Nov. 21, 1928 — Nov. 7, 2011

Gerald Duane “Jerry” Carter, age 82, of Bedford, passed away peacefully at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital at 10:47 a.m. on Monday after a long illness from complications due to cancer.

Known to his friends as Jerry, he was born in Wheatcroft, Ky., on Nov. 21, 1928, the first-born child of his parents, Henry and Virginia Carter.

After graduating from Bosse High School in Evansville in 1946, Jerry served in the National Guard for nine years and was a fixture in his community as a volunteer and active member of organizations such as the Shriners, Jaycees, Elks, American Legion, and the Bedford Exchange Club. He also was a Mason and member of the Lawrence County Cancer Patient Services. He was a Member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford.

Jerry’s life work was in the insurance industry, where he worked for the Indiana Insurance Company. Eventually, he joined Keach and Grove Insurance where he became an owner. His licenses included the Chartered Insurance Counselor and the acclaimed Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter for which he is the only CPCU license holder in Lawrence County.

Jerry was married twice, first to the late Helen Hitch in March of 1953, and later to the late Emma Mae Bultman of Bedford in November of 1977, who preceded him in death on April 12, 1991.

Always a lover of reading and travel, Jerry spent much of his young life reading about world history and historic faraway places, most of which he ultimately visited after his retirement. In fact, his travel literally spanned the world, including trips to all 50 United States and all seven continents, to Egypt where he cruised the Nile and visited the Valley of the Kings, and to China where he stood on the Great Wall. He also spent time in Russia, Germany, Iceland, England, Spain, Greece, Italy, Canada, Switzerland, Mexico, Guatemala, Jamaica, and Bermuda.

Jerry is survived by his children, David L. Carter of Indianapolis, Dan Carter and his wife Sherrie Bourg Carter of Coral Springs, Fla., and Sharon L. Wilson of Bloomington; his stepchildren, Susan (Charlie) Wier; Lester Bultman, Jr.; Wanda Lloyd, and Mark Bultman; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; his brother, John (Sandy) Carter of Evansville; sister, Jackie (Charles) Presson of Pensacola, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, with Pastor Kregg Burris officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

Jeremy Scott Burnette, 31, of Noblesville, entered heaven’s gates on Saturday.

Jeremy was born May 6, 1980, in Bedford.

Jeremy began his career as a critical care nurse in Bloomington. In 2004 he joined the nursing staff at the St. Vincent Heart Hospital and progressed to Process Leader of the PCU and ER. In 2009 he became a consultant with St. Vincent and was Director of Cardiovascular Services for Hancock Regional Hospital and Henry County Hospital. Jeremy received his MBA from Bellevue University.

A service celebrating Jeremy’s life will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Center-Carmel.

Michael Vern Rouse, 64, of Bedford, died at 2:47 a.m. on Sunday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born Jan. 11, 1947, in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Rollo Vern Rouse and Nora Evelyn (Scott) Cochran. He first married Evelyn Ewilda Stanley in 1969 and she preceded him in death. He then married Deborah Anne Clark and she survives.

He retired from the Bedford post office in 2008.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1988 after 20 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah, of Bedford; his mother, Nora Cochran, of Kentucky; one stepdaughter, Deborah Stanley Scott (Paul) of Terre Haute; two stepsons, Felix Andrew Flores of California and Steven P. Roberta P. “Bert” Lenz, 96, of Bedford, died at 7:49 a.m. on Sunday at StoneBridge Health Campus.

Born Feb. 20, 1915, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Harry C. and Mable K. (Sipes) Allen. She married Robert F. Lenz on Sept. 18, 1937, and he preceded her in death on July 20, 1973.

She retired after 35 years of service with Indiana Bell (Ameritech).

She was a member of the First Christian Church Lydia Circle, Ludeans, Telephone Pioneers and Priscilla.

Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Jane Ferguson and husband Gene and Deborah Kay Marrs and husband Dave, all of West Chester, Ohio; one sister, Marilyn A. Olson of Bedford; two grandsons, Jason and Matt Ferguson; and three great-grandchildren, Connor, Joshua and Taylor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, Jack L. and Robert E. Allen.

Beatrice M. Carter, 86, of 602 W. 10th Street, Oolitic, died at 10:40 p.m. on Sunday at IU Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born April 18, 1925, in Virginia, she was the daughter of Fred and Sallie (Agee) Tillett. She married Jesse Carter on Sept. 27, 1952, and he survives.

She retired as an X-ray technician from Central Foundry after 20 years.

She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Bedford Boat & Sportsman’s Club Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and U.A.W. Local No. 440. She attended the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse, of Oolitic; a daughter, Jonny Carter Parks of Marietta, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jessica Parks and Kyle Parks both of Georgia; one great-grandson, Aidan Mehrhof of Georgia; two brothers, Paul E. Tillett and Fred R. Tillett Jr., both of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Lindsey J. Carter.

Marguerite Mary Sheeks, 96, of Bedford, died at 6:45 p.m. Saturday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

She was born July 7, 1915, in Fall River, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Mary (O’Brien) Banbille. She married Edwin Sheeks on Feb. 9, 1950, in Tiverton, R.I., and he survives.

She was a homemaker and a member of Hillside Mennonite Church.

Surviving are her husband, Edwin, of Bedford; one son, Roderick Sheeks of Bedford; a daughter, Nancy (Mike) Metz of Indianapolis; granddaughter, Crissie Metz of Indianapolis; great-granddaughter, Paige Mary Ann Everett; and one sister, Evelyn Santos of Somerset, Mass.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Kathleen Mellow.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Burial will be in the Sheeks Cemetery in rural Mitchell.

Donald G. Weddell

Donald G. Weddell, 79, of Medora, was called to his heavenly home Saturday morning at his home while surrounded by his family.

He was born Sept. 3, 1932 in Fort Ritner.

Don was a lifetime member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1954. He was owner/operator of Weddle Logging and Trucking for many years.

He enjoyed restoring and showing antique cars. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He touched the lives of many people.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Myrtle (Cole) Weddell; one sister Alta Mae Reynolds; and one grandson, Chris Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Donna (Smith) Weddell; three daughters, Melinda (Morris) Hypes of Campbellsburg, Vicki (Mark) Norman of Heltonville, and Susan Brown (Tony Hamilton) of Brownstown; along with grandchildren, Amanda Wayman, Brad (Sarah) Brown, and Dusty Jonnson, all of Medora, Ashley (Chris Cowles of Campbellsburg, Nikki (Scott) Smith of Williams and Katie (Matt) Dittmer of Indianapolis; and 10 great-grandchildren; He is also survived by one brother, Ted (Sherry) Weddell of Florida; and sisters, Faye (Don) Lokey of Vallonia, Betty (Bill) Wilson of Brownstown, Judy Branaman and Bonnie (Everett) Bowman of Medora; along with many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Hague Funeral Home in Medora and from 9 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Medora.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with Pastor Jack Belk and Pastor Lindy Hopkins officiating. Burial will be at Weddleville Lutheran Cemetery with full military graveside rites.

Mary Josephine Colbert Risley, 90, of Columbus, died at 5:15 a.m. Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Columbus.

She was born in Daviess County, Indiana, to Cornelius Colbert and Amelia Miller Colbert.

She married Ralph William Risley Jr. on April 9, 1939. He passed away March 15, 2011.

Survivors include her grandchildren, Kathryn (Floyd Smith) Floyd of Bloomington, IN and Kurk (Stacey) Sylvester of Bloomfield, IN; six great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Donna R. Hopewell of Bedford, IN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Brenda Gayle Sylvester; brothers, John E. Colbert and Levi O. Colbert; and sisters, Bernice V. Devine and Bonnie M. Thompson.

She was a member of the Eastern Star, was an excellent seamstress, and was an accomplished artist and painter. Mary had been a 4-H leader and 4-H judge in cooking and sewing in Daviess County.

Hazel I. Terrell, 87, passed away at 10 p.m. Wednesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born Aug. 6, 1924, in Chaplin, Ky., she was the daughter of Nevel and Osie (Moore) Coulter. She married Ruel Terrell and he preceded her in death February 1980.

She had been employed at Essex and was a member of the Orleans Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving are her children, Kathy Ashabraner of Orleans, Jeff (Ladeanna) Terrell of San Leon, Texas, Tim Terrell of Orleans and Martha (Kenneth) Terry of Bedford; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Terrell of Vidor, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Her parents; husband; son, David Terrell; sister, Edith Terrell; and brothers, John Coulter and Royston Coulter, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Claude Chastain Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.

Born Oct. 15, 1919, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Ray and Rose (Wagoner) Simmons. She married Bert Lewis on Nov. 16, 1935. After 72 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 2008.

She was a homemaker and a life-long member of the Bedford Free Methodist Church. She was a member of the Department Club and Phi Beta Kappa Sorority.

Born March 14, 1944, in Bedford, he was the son of Cecil C. and Josephine (Taylor) Hughes. He married Merle Ann Watson on Jan. 8, 1983, and she survives.

He retired from NWSC Crane and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as a SFC 1st Class Sgt. during the Vietnam War.

He retired as a supervisor from Ameritech after 35 years.

He was a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, Telephone Pioneers of America and past president of the White River Humane Society.

Born Jan. 24, 1952 in Lawrence County, he was the son of the late Dale Baker and Lorene (Etchison) Mitchell. He married Cathy Spires on July 8, 1995, and she survives.

He retired from Otis Elevator as a welder.

He was a member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsmans Club, Eagles No. 654 and of the Protestant faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fred Davis, stepson Freddie Dean Davis, two brothers Bob Burkett and Jim Burkett, and two sisters Betty Lucy and Vivian Stanger.
