Brian F. Otte

May 5, 1962 – January 28, 2011

Brian F. Otte, 48, of Pikeville, Ky., formerly of Bedford, died at 5:35 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 2011, at the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, Ky., from a sudden illness due to complicated pneumonia.

Born May 5, 1962 in Huntington, IN, he was the son of Ervin G. and Nancy Sue (Hite) Otte. He was employed at Visteon for 23 years, before becoming a maintenance technician for Bloomington Hospital, and then Pikeville Medical Center. He married Deb Campbell on November 7, 1998, and she survives. Brian was of the Messianic faith.

Survivors include his wife Deb of Pikeville, KY; his father, Ervin G. Otte of Bedford; his late mother, Nancy Sue Otte; one brother, Alan Otte and wife Kathy of Crandall; two children, Jennifer Shouse of Austin, IN and Sgt. Ryan Shouse and wife Sara of San Diego; three grandchildren, Marshall Robbins, Gage Shouse, and Jace Shouse; his mother-in-law, Norma Campbell of Scottsburg; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2011, at Mount Pleasant Christian Cemetery with David Swaim officiating. A celebration of life will take place immediately following the burial at the Calvary Lutheran Church reception hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nancy S. Otte Scholarship Fund. Lois Drake

Lois Drake, 72, of Heltonville, died at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born January 5, 1939, in Carroll County, KY, she was the daughter of James F. and Mildred (Proctor) Riley. Lois married Buford Drake on December 21, 1957, and he survives. Lois worked as a secretary for the First United Methodist Church for 22 years. She was a member of the Mundell Christian Church where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. She was a 4-H leader for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Buford of Heltonville; three daughters, Kimberly Gray and husband Randy of Bloomington, Kelly Clymer and husband Steve of Martinsville, and Kathy George and husband David of Bedford; a son, James Drake and companion Beth Frigerio of Huron; eight grandchildren, Diana Humphrey, Josiah Hunter, Kristen Hunter, Emily Hunter, Brittany Prince, David A. George, Nevaeh George, and Katrina George; 4 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy Kring and husband Bob of Madison. She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Thomas George; and a sister in infancy.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, at the Mundell Christian Church with John Wisley and Charlie Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Mundell Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1, at the Day & Carter Mortuary and 9:00 a.m. until service time on Wednesday, February 2, at Mundell Christian Church. Roy L. Sanders

Roy L. Sanders, 73, Shoals, died Saturday, Jan. 29, at 12:49 p.m. at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

He was born March 5, 1937, at Trinity Springs to Ranzy and Ruth (Taylor) Sanders. He married Qilma J. Teegarden in 1972, and she survives.

He retired from the street department for the city of Bedford. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of the Shoals American Legion Post No. 61.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma J. of Shoals; one stepson, George Cunnington of Bedford; several step-grandchildren; a step-great-grandson, and one brother, Henry Sanders of Trinity Springs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: Gordon, Marvin, Dale, Roy and Genner Sanders.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Burial will follow in Springhill Cemetery. American Legion Post No. 61 will accord military graveside rites. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at Queen-Lee Funeral Home.

Helen Louise Roberts

Helen L. Roberts, 93, of Bloomington, passed away Friday at Garden Villa. She was the daughter of Charles E. and Ada L. (Morris) Blackwell, born on March 27, 1917, in Des Moines, Iowa.

Helen was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Noblesville, IN, and also a member of the Kiwanis Club in Cicero, IN.

Helen lived in Bloomington and moved to Indianapolis in 1951. She taught four years in the Washington Township School System and then taught in the Indianapolis Public School System at schools 34, 92 and 15. The last ten years of her working career she was a remedial reading teacher retiring in 1979 and moving to Cicero, IN, in 1987.

Helen is survived by her two stepchildren, Edmund B. Roberts of Caldwell, Idaho, and Joan G. Abbey of Florence, Arizona; and three nieces, Anna Allender of Bedford, Indiana, Betty Stende of North Dakota, and Jenne Earhart of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James E. Roberts; one sister, Genevieve Galyan; and two nephews, Charles Lovejoy and Bob Lovejoy.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at Allen Funeral Home, with Mark Brock officiating. Burial will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Jesse F. Jones

Jesse F. Jones, 83, of Bedford, formerly of Elmhurst, Ill., died at 2:05 a.m. on Friday, at Johnson’s Christian Village in Bedford.

Born Sept. 6, 1927, in Cape Sandy, he was the son of Max K. and Florence May (Lynch) Jones. He was employed at A.S.C.P. in Chicago, and was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy. He married Elsie Johns on April 2, 1955, and she preceded him in death in 1993. He later married Louise Heaton on Nov. 1, 2003, and she survives.

He was a member of the East Oolitic Community Church and enjoyed woodworking, gardening, playing music and writing his autobiography.

Survivors include his wife, Louise of Bedford; two grandchildren, Robert Allen and Kristin Young, both of Deluth, Minn.; three brothers, Kenneth Jones and Lester Jones and wife, Kathleen, all of Leavenworth, and Marlen Jones and wife, Della of Bedford; one sister, Marjorie Linton of Corydon; four stepchildren, Dennis, Tim and Brian Heaton and Glenda Goen; and four stepgrandchildren, Kimberly and Nicholas Young, and Sammy and Hannah Heaton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a son, Robert Allen Jones; and a brother, George William Jones.

Per his wishes, cremation was chosen. A celebration of life service will be conducted at a later date.

Ruby Byerley Hauser

Ruby Byerley Hauser, 94, of Leavenworth, formerly of Bedford, died at 12:10 p.m. Thursday at the Todd-Dickey Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Leavenworth.

She was born July 1, 1916, in Leavenworth, the daughter of Murray and Nora Pearl (Crecelius) Byerley. She married William James Hauser Sr., on July 1, 1961 in Bedford, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 16, 1998.

She was a school teacher at Fredonia, Hartford High School at Berne, New Middletown High School, and Cannelton High School. In September 1949, she became librarian at Bedford High School and in 1974, transferred to Bedford North Lawrence High School, retiring in 1981.

She was a graduate of Leavenworth High School with the class of 1933, attended Oakland City College, 1935-36, was a graduate of Ball State University in 1938, and received her M.S. from Denver (Colo.) University in 1949.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Bedford, the Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association, the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Tri Kappa Sorority, and Delta Pi Epsilon National Business Teachers’ Honorary Fraternity.

Survivors include three stepchildren, Haven Martin Hauser, Osseo, Mich., William James Hauser Jr. (Mary) of Bradenton, Fla., and Nancy Hauser Booze (Kenneth), Valley, NB; two grandchildren, Kenneth Carl Booze III of Valley, NB, and William James Hauser III of Riverview, Fla.; one great-grandson, Ryan Booze, two great-granddaughters, Emmalena Hauser and Amanda Booze; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Camden, Mequon, Wis.; and dear friend, Mary Stutzman of Leavenworth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two first cousins, Lucille Stark and Dorothy Stark Charles; and one second cousin, Sharon Ann Charles Edwards; one third cousin, Terri Sears, and one granddaughter, Angela Rae Booze.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Mark Daniel officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery.

He founded the Church of Jesus Christ in 1959 and served as Elder until 1995. He had been employed at Russell Trucking Company and Jefferson Trucking Company. He enjoyed antiquing.

Harry was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of four bronze stars.

Surviving are daughters, Rita Mires and Vickie Brown and husband Elvis, all of Mitchell; grandchildren, Ramona Swango and Tammy Jo Sample; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren

His parents; wife; son, Jackie Lee Holt; grandson, Charles Robert Sample; brothers, Ernest, Virgil, and Menlo Holt; sisters, Sylvia Tincher and Goldie Milligan; and son-in-law, Frank Mires, preceded him in death.

William J. McAfee, 88, Georgetown, Texas, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home on Monday.

He was born on Feb. 24, 1922, in Bedford, to Lawrence Tilford and Mabel Sherrill McAfee.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Maxine McAfee; son, William L. McAfee; daughter, Marilyn Baugh; grandsons, Chris Bradford, William “Patrick” McAfee, and Ryan McAfee; and by many nieces and nephews.

William was in the 1940 graduating class of Shawswick High School and was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Pacific Arena from 1942 to 1945.

Burdena Jewell “Meme” Chastain, 80, of Washington Ave., Bedford, died at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born Oct. 6, 1930, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Renzo and Myrtle (Inman) Chastain. She was employed at RCA in Bloomington for 42 years and attended the Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Beverene Hutton of Newburg; two brothers, Delmar Chastain and wife Marjorie of Bloomington and Donald Lowell Chastain and wife Barbara of Illinois; a sister-in-law, Susie Chastain of Fairfax, Va.; several nieces and nephews including, Jay Rigger and wife Lori of Bedford, Lorrie Carpenter and husband Dave of Williams, Denny and Darrell Hutton, Corliss Chastain, Shannon Tulley, Jeff Chastain, Doug Chastain, Mike Chastain, Brian Chastain, Kelly Chastain, and Brenda Geesey; a great-nephew, Joey Carpenter; and a great-niece, Haleigh Rigger, who called Burdena ‘grandma’.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Bonita JoEllen Rigger; and a brother, Dellas Chastain.

Jeannine Miller Waltz

Jeannine Waltz, 74, died Tuesday at her home among her loving family.

She was born Jan. 18, 1937, in Edinburgh, to James F. and Lola C. (Boling) Miller. She married her high school sweetheart, Lee C Waltz, on Sept. 11, 1955, and he survives.

She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She was of the Christian faith and a member of the First Christian Church.

Her children include: two sons, Dr. Kevin Waltz, OD MD, and wife Rhonda (Fox) Waltz, of Indianapolis and Kent Waltz and wife Charlotte (King) Waltz of Norman; three daughters, Karen Rankin and Kamala Pridemore of Mitchell and Kathi Waltz Cummings and her husband Randy of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren, Sgt. Stephen Jacob McDonald and wife Cindy, of Clarksville, Tenn., Andrew Rankin and friend Amber England of Springville, SPC Lyssa Rankin of Bargersville, Zachary and Zoe Waltz of Indianapolis, Stephanie Waltz of Norman, Deanna Cummings of Indianapolis, and Dustin and Ethan Pridemore of Mitchell; and by eight great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include a sister, AnnaMae Cox, of McCordsville; a brother, James A (Butch) Miller and wife, Bonnie, of Florida; eight nieces and nephews; 14 grandnieces and nephews; and 5 great-grandnieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two grand children; her brother-in-law, Charlie Cox,; and a nephew.

She was a 50 year member of Eastern Star, Newberry Chapter, where she was a Worthy Matron.

She was a member of Sunshine Girls. She was a Girl Scout Leader in both Rockville, Md., and Bedford. She was an active Hospice volunteer and was on the Hospice State Board. She was a member of the Salt Creek Power Squadron and held many positions. She was a member of the Classic Ragtime Society.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. on Monday at the Eskew-Eaton Funeral Home in Edinburgh. Burial will follow at the Rest Haven Cemetery where she will join her parents, in-laws, and nephew.

Friends may call between 1-3 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Weather permitting, there will be a New Orleans style procession at the cemetery. Please bring a decorated umbrella, scarf, or hat for the procession. Attire will honor Jeannine’s interests: Indianapolis Colts, Ragtime, Mardi Gras beads/masks, or Sun/Sand/Surf (ie., the beach).

Caroll Rosalie Morris Jackson, 79, of Greensburg passed away, peacefully with her family by her side, on Tuesday.

She was born on Nov. 4, 1931, in Bedford, the daughter of Henry and Helen Murphy Morris. Caroll was a 1950 graduate of Bedford High School. She married Robert Dean Jackson on July 22, 1950.

Caroll and Robert owned and operated Jackson Office Equipment from 1957 until their retirement in 2008. She was a member of the Faith Baptist Church, Delta Theta Tau, Give N Take Garden Club, and the Auxiliary of the Gideon’s.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Jackson; sons, Brian (Loria) Jackson and Brent (Chris) Jackson; daughter, Sheileena Essex, all of Greensburg; sisters, Janet Meadows of Tennessee and Sharon (Jim) VanHorn of Bloomington; brother, Henry Morris of Texas; grandchildren, Brian (Becky) Jackson, Richard (Heidi) Jackson, Timothy Jackson, Allison (Devon) Brown, and Tony (Brittney) Jackson; and great-grandchildren, Corinne, Colby, Dalton, and Jadon Jackson.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Jacobsen.

A visitation for family and friends will take place from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Faith Baptist Church. Rev. Dan Selby and Pastor Brad Douglas will be officiating. Burial will follow at the South Park Cemetery.

Deloris Griffin, 85, Westfield, formerly of Bedford, died at 8:55 a.m. on Friday at her residence.

She was born May 3, 1925, in Worthington, the daughter of David Clem and Lola Ellen (Smith) Miller. She married Herbert E. “Bert” Griffin Jr. on May 12, 1946 at Jeffersonville, and he preceded her in death Nov. 13, 1971.

She was a homemaker and a graduate of Bloomington High School with the class of 1942.

She was a lifetime member of both the American Legion Gillen Post No. 33 Ladies Auxiliary, and Bedford Boat and Sportman Club.

Survivors include her daughter, Brenda (Steve) Lohman of Westfield; a son, Herbert E. “Butch” Griffin III and partner Scott Roos of Salinas, Calif.; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Alfred) Robinson of Whitestown and Christopher Lohman of Westfield; and two great-grandchildren, Elora Noelle Robinson and Vincent Oliver Robinson, both of Whitestown.

Gladys Vivian Harper, 93, of Bedford, died at 11:10 a.m. Friday at Westview Nursing and Rehab in Bedford.

She was born April 13, 1917, in Elkview, W.Va., the daughter of Elmer and Lula (Elmore) Melton. She married Ralph Waldo Harper on Feb. 9, 1936, and he preceded her in death in April of 1977.

She was a graduate of Elkview High School with the class of 1935. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bedford.

Survivors include one son, Glenn Harper of O’Fallon, Mo.; one daughter, Donna (Ken) Brumbaugh of Bedford; eight grandchildren, David Brumbaugh of Mobile, Ala., Lynnea Brumbaugh Walter of St. Louis, Mo.; Darrin Forrest (Kay Lynn) Brumbaugh of Dallas, Texas, Debbie Rolphingsmeyer of St. Louis, Craig Harper of Belleville, Ill., and Cheryl Cooper of Appleton, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Luke and Jackson Brumbaugh, and Harper and Arthur Walter; two great-grandchildren, Heidi and Tripp Rolphingsmeyer; twin sisters, Velma High and Thelma Huffman of Charleston, W.Va.; and one brother, Ben (Pat) Melton, of Charleston, W.Va.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; five sisters; and five brothers.

Born Feb. 7, 1937, in Columbia, Tenn., he was the son of Maury Paul and Viola Rachel (Adams) Chappell Sr. Following the death of his mother at an early age, his father married a wonderful lady, Sarah A. Harris, and she resides in Columbia, Tenn.

Paul married Judy Flora December 23, 1984.

He was a pharmacist, ordained minister, regional manager of drugstore operations, disc jockey and radio announcer, and for more than 50 years was an auctioneer.

He was a member of Switzerland County Community Church and Huron Church of God.

Surviving are his wife, Judy Chappell of Huron; children, Sam Wilson of Mitchell, and children, Melissa and Avery, Kimberly and John Tuddy of Huron, and children, John Morgan and Joshua Curtis, Robin Wilson of Huron, and son, Tyler, April and Greg Marquart of Dayton, Ohio, and children, Angel, Nick, and Maggie. James P. and Jill Chappell, Ft. Worth, Texas, and children Jake and Jenny Kae, Lisa Roberts of Ft. Worth, Texas, and daughter, Sherah, Marqaretta Galvin of Ft. Worth, Texas, and children, James Paul and Sara; and brothers, Albert Eugene Chappell and Wayne Allen Chappell, both of Columbia, Tenn.

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Dayadharum officiating. Graveside service will be at 11a.m. Wednesday in Huron Cemetery.

Carolyn S. Butler, 68, of Bedford, passed away on January 22, 2011, at 12:35 a.m., at Westview Manor in Bedford. She was born on February 14, 1942, in Lawrence County, to Frank and Bertha (Cain) Mason; she married Ralph Butler on July 6, 1960, in Lawrence County, and he preceded her in death on November 24, 2004. Carolyn was custodian of Dive Christian Church in Bedford and also cleaned several other houses. She attended Shawswick High School and was a member of Dive Christian Church.

Survivors include one brother, Leroy Mason and wife Sandy of Bedford; two sisters, Mildred King of Bedford, and Brenda Cornell and husband William Jr. of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Kenneth, James, Richard and William Mason; and two sisters, Betty Goodman and Beulah Banta.

Services will be Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 12 p.m. at Cresthaven Funeral Home.

Gary L. Cottengain, 68, of Mitchell, IN, passed away at the St. Catherine Hospital in Charlestown, IN, on January 21, 2011. He was born to Romaine and Mary (Pemberton) Cottengain on February 10, 1942, in Jeffersonville, IN.

Gary worked as an environmental aid for nursing homes. His was an avid bowler and volunteered for Clothe the Child.

Survivors include his sister, Kay Graham of Bedford, IN; two nephews; and one niece. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Violet Simpson; and brother, Russell Cottengain.

Edward C. Swigler, 92, 7102 State Road 158, Bedford, died at 3:55 p.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Born September 6, 1918, in Hart Co., KY, he was the son of Virgil L. and Mariah (Cobble) Srygler. He married Edna Lucille Arnold on April 15, 1939, and she survives.

He was retired as a driver for Coca-Cola Bottling in Bedford and was a veteran of WW II serving with the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Englewood Baptist Church, where he was a past deacon and loved to sing in the choir.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Lucille, of Bedford; a son, Larry Micheal Swigler (Loretta) of Crane, IN; a daughter, Peggy Dorsett of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Sherre Zink (Bill) of Bloomington, Carole Cummings, Billie Tumey, Randy Dorsett (April), John Swigler (Regina Moore), all of Bedford, Larry Swigler of Berlin, Germany, Laura Lawson of Bloomington, and Kirstin Stickney (Jason) of Carmel; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Elizabeth Shaff, of Bedford. He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters; and a granddaughter, Tammy Hurley.

Marilyn Rose Sullivan, 59, of Bedford, died at 6:29 p.m. on Thursday at her residence.

She was born Dec. 15, 1951, in Bedford, the daughter of William Sullivan and Josie (Melvin) Sullivan Miller.

She was a clerical worker with the Salvation Army in Chicago.

She was of the Protestant faith and an avid collector.

Survivors include two brothers, Joe (Anna) Sullivan and Billy Dean (Rita) Sullivan, all of Bedford; six sisters, Mary DeArmond of Bedford, Carol Manuel of Austin, Helen Good of Bedford, Ruth Ann Cain of Solsberry, Lois Ritter of Bedford, and Rhea Dawn (John) Hayes of Bedford; many nieces and nephews; and her two dogs that she loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Walter Miller; three brothers, Orville “Bee” Smith, John Sullivan, and Tom Sullivan; four stepbrothers, Bill, Richard, Raymond and Glendale Miller; one sister, Shirley Courter; and a stepsister, Ester Requa.

Lois Annette Knight, 69, of 151 East Harrison Street, Orleans, died Thursday at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.

She was born Sept. 4, 1941, to her parents, Dorsey Van and Betty Oshelia Beal-Nelms.

She married Gerald Lee Knight on May 2, 1958, in Emporia, Va. and he survives.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Campbellsburg.

Also surviving are seven children, a son, Gerald Lee Knight Jr. and wife Nancy of Cloverdale, six daughters, Selina Prince and husband Jimmy of Decatur, Ala., Tammy Puterbaugh and husband Ron of Bloomington, Teresa Quigley and husband Jon of Plainfield, Sandra Wever and husband Kent of Bedford, Frances Cheryl Davidson and husband, Marty of Bedford and Melissa Burns and husband Mark of Bradenton, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Raymond K. Brinegar

The Rev. Raymond K. Brinegar, 72, of Orleans, died Friday morning at his home.

He was born Oct. 13, 1938 ,in Monroe County, to his parents, George E. and Vena Alice Howe Brinegar. He married Carolyn Dunlap Brinegar on Aug. 17, 1958, and she survives.

He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1956, Purdue University in 1960 and Asbury Theological Seminary in 1980. He was a minister with the United Methodist Church, retiring in 2001 from the Kentucky Conference, where he served in several churches. He then retired from the Indiana Conference in December 2007, where he most recently served at the Grace United Methodist Church in Bedford.

Surviving with his wife; are two sons, Kenneth Ray Brinegar of Bloomfield, and Kevin Lawrence Brinegar of Paoli; one daughter, Kathryn Joan Lane and her husband Jim of Cleveland, Tenn.; one brother, Jerry George Brinegar of Standford; a sister, Sandy Rogers of Standford; and seven grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Orleans United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jacqueline Foley and Pastor Mininger officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Orleans.

Mildred Stone, 81, of Bedford, died at 5:58 a.m. on Wednesday at Westview Nursing and Rehab Center in Bedford.

Born April 15, 1929, she was the daughter of Russell and Anna (Evans) Swango. She married Ralph Edward Fenander on Aug. 15, 1952, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 1973. She later married Carl W. Stone on April 15, 1984, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 13, 2008.

She retired in 1992 from Bank One as a new account representative. She was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church and a longtime member of the New Union Christian Church.

Mildred’s greatest pleasures were being a wife, her home and being with family on special holidays.

Survivors include a sister, Doris Hampton of Bedford; a sister-in-law, Gail Swango; a stepson, Jeff Stone; a stepgrandson, Matthew Stone; a stepgranddaughter, Courtney Stone; and several nieces and nephews, Suzanne Hampton, Denise Swango, Dwight (Teresa) Swango, Dale (Mona) Swango, David (Susie) Swango and Daren (Melanie) Swango.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and two brothers, Quincy and Olin Swango.

Oren ‘Dale’ Hatfield

Oren “Dale” Hatfield, 84, of Bedford, died at 12:55 p.m. Wednesday at Westview Nursing & Rehab in Bedford.

Born April 9, 1926, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Oren Vestal and Lillian “Bib” (Turner) Hatfield. He married Dorothy Ann Williams on July 19, 1947, and she preceded him in death on April 20, 2008.

He was a tool & die maker at GM Powertrain, retiring in 1980 after almost 32 years; he was also a minister, having pastored Liberty Baptist Church for 30 years, retiring in 2008.

He grew up in Needmore and graduated from Needmore High School in 1944. He also completed GM Technical Training.

Dale became a Christian in about 1960, and became a member of Englewood Baptist Church, where he became a Sunday School teacher and was also a deacon. He later became pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in Mitchell.

Dale enlisted in the Navy and was in The Amphibious Corps., landing troops in the invasions of Pacific islands, including Okinawa and Iwo Jima.

Dale liked to hunt and fish from the time he was a boy. He has always been an excellent marksman and put food on the table. He was an expert fisherman, able to use any type of tackle, including a fly rod. With these tools, he supplied hundreds of pounds of fish for our family and other families as well.

Surviving are three sons, James Dale (Denise) Hatfield and Timothy Lew (Carolyn) Hatfield, all of Bedford, and David Lee (Elizabeth) Hatfield of Camby; two daughters, Sandra Gail (Ron) Mundell of Terre Haute, and Brenda Sue (Jim) Adams of Coos Bay, Ore.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Bonnie Hatfield Kruchten of Bedford; one sister-in-law, Rosemary Hatfield of Bloomfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and brother, Warren Hatfield.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Englewood Baptist Church with Pastor David Ferry officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens with graveside rites by American Legion Gillen Post No. 33.

Born March 3, 1934, in Martin County, she was the daughter of Joseph D. and Ruby (Bridges) Barlow. She married Harry Walther June 13, 1952, and he preceded her in death April 7, 1985.

She had been employed at Hospitality House and Mitchell Manor, and was a member of the Harvest Community Church.

Surviving are daughters, Patricia Stroud and husband Glenn of Bogart, Ga., Harrietta Crane and husband John of Mitchell, Linda Crane and husband Bill of Bedford, and Kimberlia Hardy and husband Tony of Orleans; sister, Imogene Powell and husband Robert of Mitchell; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Her parents; husband; daughter, Cynthia Graves; and brothers, Dale Barlow and Robert Barlow, preceded her in death.

James D. Wellman, 65, of Bloomington, passed away Tuesday.

Born, July 18, 1945, in Bloomington, he was the son of Worth and Lenore (White) Wellman Perry.

Jim was a fireman for 37 years at the Perry-Clear Creek Fire Department where he served two terms as Fire Chief. On June 27, 2009, he received the following awards, the State Fire Marshall’s Meritorious Service Award, the Governor’s Meritorious Service Award, and the Distinguished Hoosier Award.

He enjoyed Thursday night dinners with his wife, brothers and sister-in-laws, he and his brothers have kept the tradition going after the death of his parents. He also had a great time at golf outings with his brothers.

A loving husband, father and papaw, he enjoyed NASCAR, woodworking, hunting and fishing. But, spending time with his family was most important to him.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Theresa (Cook) Wellman, one son, Bradley Wellman (Elese), and one daughter, Cindi Bowlen (Greg), all of Bloomington; two grandsons, Ty and Kyle Dugan; two brothers, Charles Wellman (Carolyn) of Bedford and Sam Wellman (Janice) of Bloomington; nieces and nephews, Dane Wellman, Deb Wellman, Brett Wellman, Janna Shields, Betty Anderson; great-nieces and nephews, Grant Wellman, Clark Wellman, Autumn Wellman, Kayla Wellman, Adam Wellman, Patty Wellman, Zachary Wellman, Devyn Anderson, Dylan Anderson, Olivia Shields, Ashley Hepp and Addyson Shields; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Millard Perry; nephews, Brian Wellman and Stephen Michael Wellman; and a sister-in-law, Virginia Wellman.

Mary Esther Craig, 82, of 1168 Trogden Lane, Bedford (Needmore), made her journey home to be with the Lord at 5:10 p.m. on Monday, January 17, 2011, with her family at her bedside.

Born June 7, 1928, she was the daughter of Findley and Hattie (Mayo) Gyger. She married Donald Craig on May 18, 1947, and he survives. She served the Lord in music by singing, choir directing and piano playing. She was an active member of the Englewood Baptist Church.

Surviving along with her husband of 63 years; are one son, Ronald Craig and wife Leesa; a daughter-in-law, Martha J. Craig; four grandchildren, Bridget (Blaine) Mackey, Sherry (Eric) Scherschel, Kevin E. (Heather) Craig, and Jason “Jake” (Jesse) Craig; nine great-grandchildren, Garrett, Gavin and Michaella Scherschel, Travin, Wade and Kinley Craig, Martha Craig, and Alivia Grace and Addison Faith Mackey; a sister, June Ballard; and many nieces and nephews.

Joshua Scott “Josh” Waldron, 16, of Raymond, Maine, and Carrabassett Valley, a junior at Carrabassett Valley Academy, died Saturday at Sugarloaf as the result of injuries sustained in a skiing accident. He had been a CVA Freerider for the past three years.

He was born April 10, 1994, in Indianapolis, the son of Scott and Laura (Poi) Waldron.

Josh was a student athlete who excelled in a variety of sporting activities.

Josh, a member of the Sugarloaf Ski Club and the Mountain Biking Club also loved wake boarding and skate boarding. He was passionate about the outdoors and was beginning to develop an interest in fishing and target practicing.

Josh’s immediate family describes him as sweet, kind, quiet mannered, intelligent, compassionate, thoughtful, creative, funny and blessed with a great sense of humor.

Beatrice “Bea” G. (Hoskins) Peterson, 91, Attica, passed away at The Waters of Williamsport, at 9:48 a.m. on Sunday.

Bea was born in Winthrop, on April 21, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Ray and Juanita (Woodruff) Hoskins. She was raised and lived most of her life in Attica. She attended Attica schools, continuing her education by graduating from St. Francis High School in Lafayette and the Chicago School of Nursing. She had also received her EMT (Emergency Medical Training) certification from Fountain County.

Bea formerly worked as a nurse to Dr. Fisher in Attica and at Community Hospital in Williamsport. For 30 years Bea worked as a nurse at Harrison Steel Castings Company in Attica and most recently at Area IV Agency on Aging and Community Action.

Bea enjoyed camping, fishing, boating and being with her family.

(Nina) Peterson of Bedford and Jim “Pete” (Susie) Peterson of Logansport; her grandchildren, Christopher (Jan) Peterson of San Carlos, Calif., Becky (Rick) Johnson of LaCajon, Calif., Spencer (Melissa) Peterson of Attica, John E. (Terri) Peterson of Bedford, Lory (Jeff) Arnold of Orleans, Christy Sykes of Jasper, Tavis (Sara) Martin of Attica, and Jamie (Mike) Sanders and Casey Peterson, both of Noblesville; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers; three sisters; a granddaughter; and a great-granddaughter.

Following a lengthy illness, Beth Furlow Beach passed away peacefully on Dec. 31, 2010, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, Maine. Her loving husband, Rodney Showers, and her friends surrounded her.

Born on Oct. 4, 1949, in Manhattan, Kan., she was the daughter of William (Bill) and Mary Ellen Furlow.

Beth spent her childhood living in numerous states, but Bedford held special memories. She attended Bedford High School (1967); prior to graduation her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1974 with a BS.

Beth had a successful career in transportation working in Sacramento, New Orleans and Cincinnati. She was Vice President Corporate Marketing at ATE Management and Service Company, Inc. (Division of Ryder) in Cincinnati. She served on numerous boards and received commendations from Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan for various transportation marketing innovations, transit and nationwide training programs.

She was very intelligent, driven, and compassionate about life. No detail was forgotten, everything had to be top notch; mediocre was not acceptable, especially when it came to cooking. Beth would send Rod to Portland searching for special ingredients for a recipe that she was preparing. As a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu School of Cuisine, Paris, France, she especially enjoyed sharing her world cuisine with family and friends.

She was a passionate scuba diver and certified instructor. She frequently talked about her travels to Paris, but she also enjoyed the simple life with nature in the country. While living in Maine she loved lobster, snow and the beautiful scenery.

Survivors include her husband, Rod Showers; two stepdaughters, Susan Showers of Scotch Plains, N.J., Jacinta Showers and granddaughter, Jamie Showers Ettaro of Livermore, Calif.; and her furry children, Mya, Sasha, Boston, Logan and Samantha.

Her parents preceded her in death.

In accordance with her wishes, Beth was cremated and her ashes will be spread in the Atlantic Ocean along with her deceased pets. A celebration of her life will be held this summer in Maine. Donations can be made to Best Friends Animal Society in memory of Beth Beach. She loved animals, especially dogs, and she was an avid supporter of this organization.

William W. (Bill) Blackwell, 65, of Bedford, died at 6:58 a.m. on Sunday, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born July 7, 1945 in Lawrence County, he was the son of Robert W. and Edith M. (Wray) Blackwell.

He was a graduate of the Monon High School with the Class of 1963.

He retired as a die maker for General Motors in Bedford and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps serving during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Hillcrest Christian Church, the Oolitic VFW, Eagles Aerie No. 654, Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion and U.A.W. Local No. 440.

Survivors include two daughters, Misty D. Swayer and husband Jonathan of Orleans, Tracy D. Lounsbery and husband Jason of Morgantown; a son, William J. Blackwell and wife Carrie of Bedford; five grandchildren, Evan Swayer, Emma Swayer, Riley Lounsbery, Emerson Lounsbery and Katelyn Blackwell; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Lena M. Hawkins of Georgia and Janet K. Sowders of Avoca. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Robert J. Blackwell.

She was born April 20, 1928, in Paoli, the daughter of Farel and Mae (Condra) Young. She married Charles “Sheepie” Kellams on Oct. 28, 1949, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1990.

She was retired from Paoli, Inc., and was a member of St. John’s Pentecostal Church in Georgetown.

Survivors include two daughters, Norma Sue Free and husband Lloyd and Nancy Carol Kaiser, both of Paoli; six grandchildren, Aaron Kellams of Paoli, Nathan Bond of Cincinnati, Lola and Tracy Patton of Orleans, Monica Free and Curtis Ratliff of Bedford, Tammy McCaslim of Paoli, and Damon Free and Terrah Blanton of Bedford; seven great-grandchildren and close friends, Michelle Crawford and Tim Crane, both of Paoli.

Ruby Bogie, 99, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2011, at Stonebridge Health Campus. Born on a farm just west of Bloomington, IN, on Dec. 13, 1911, she was the daughter of Hugh and Antoinette (Whaley) Hancock. Ruby graduated from the IU School of Business in 1933 and worked for the Federal Social Security Agency from 1937 until her retirement in 1971. Afterwards, Ruby and her husband, Henry Bogie, of Columbus, IN, alternated seasons between their homes in Englewood, FL, and Ninevah, IN. Ruby traveled widely and stayed active through membership in Eastern Star, the Stevens Ministry and Kappa Delta Sorority.

Ruby is survived by her sister Betty Clowers of Bedford; by nieces Kathy Abel of Bedford and Ginger Edwards of Brookville; by nephew Marc Hancock of Evansville; also by eight great-nieces and nephews, including John and Joe Dusard of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and by three brothers, Eugene, Paul and John Hancock.

Evelyn Judah Hill, 78, of Bedford, died early on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at her home.

Born July 15, 1932, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of Max and Olive (Smith) Judah. She married James M. Hill on May 20, 1955, and he survives.

She was a 1950 graduate of Needmore High School. She was a homemaker and formerly worked at RCA and the Bedford National Bank.

She attended Gullett’s Creek Baptist Church where she was an active member. She later served at the First Church of God in Bedford until becoming bedfast. Donica Memorial Church of God, several other churches and individuals have been involved with serving her spiritual needs while she was bedfast at home.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; and their four children, Jana (David) Reed, Carol Lane, Gay (Danny) Lawton, and Nathan Hill, all of the Bedford area; 10 grandchildren, Kea (Dan) Deneau, Joshua Reed, Andrea Reed, Lacey Lane, Miranda Lane, Matt (Brandy) Lane, Megan (Jeremy) Stevens, Ben Lawton, Camden Hill and Shelby Hill; ten great-grandchildren; her niece, Lana (Arthur) Piller; and nephew, Chris (Lisa) Judah.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Warren Judah.

He was born Dec. 12, 1945, in Bedford, the son of Harold N. and Helen L. (Isom) Guthrie. He married Sharon Odom on Feb. 12, 1965, in Orange County, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 2010.

He was a tool & die maker with General Motors for 44 years, retiring in May 2010.

He was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the class of 1964.

He was a member of the Pinhook Church of Christ; UAW Local No. 440.

He liked fishing, watching his grandson’s baseball games and any sporting events involving grandkids, and long talks.

He and Sharon were the “parents” of an exchange student Lucas Padue Oliveira from Brazil in 2002.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart.

David Alan “Flash” Nolan, 60, of French Lick, passed away at 8:40 a.m. on Wednesday at his residence.

Flash was born April 4, 1950, in Orange County, the son of Donald Valentine and Mildred Jean (Hardin) Nolan. He married Gloria Mae “Birdie” Tomlinson on Oct. 8, 1983, and she survives.

He was a 1968 graduate of Springs Valley High School and a 1972 graduate of ITT Tech. He was an HVAC technician and electrician and had previously been employed with Edwards Heating and Cooling in Mitchell, Goff Refrigeration in Bedford and HPDI in French Lick. He was a member of the NRA and the Dubois Gun Club. He enjoyed gun collecting, collecting “ducks,” and reloading and shooting. He also enjoyed “piddling” by making boat replicas.

He is survived by his mother, Mildred Jean Nolan of West Baden Springs; his wife, Gloria “Birdie” Nolan of French Lick; his sons, Jeremiah Wyman of French Lick and Christopher Nolan of Mitchell; a grandson, Zachary; a brother, Donnie Nolan of Paoli; a sister, Patty Pearson of Paoli; and his mother-in-law, Betty Tomlinson of French Lick.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Donald Ralph Crawford, 81, of Bedford, died at 9:05 a.m. on Tuesday at Johnson Christian Village in Bedford.

He was born May 28, 1929, in Lawrence County, the son of Orin and Mary (Flynn) Crawford. He married Hazel J. Fite on Sept. 19, 1952, and she survives.

He was a lathe operator at Westinghouse in Bloomington for 29 years, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of Fairview Community Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving with his wife Hazel J. Crawford of Bedford; are one daughter, Sula (Randy) Eads of Bedford; two sons, Timothy (Joyce) Crawford and Evan B. Virginia Rose Faris Bennett, 91, of Bedford, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Bliss House in Bedford.

Born May 28, 1919, in Tunnelton, she was the daughter of Thomas Joshua and Mytle (Jean) Faris. She married Harold Bennett Nov. 19, 1941, and he preceded her in death April 22, 2006.

Virginia graduated from Campbellsburg High School in 1936 and Indiana University. She taught two years in the two-room school in Fort Ritner and finished her 34-year teaching career at Tunnelton. She was a member of Tunnelton United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She served as church pianist for many years.

Surviving are sons, Jo Alan Bennett of Seymour and James Eric Bennett and wife Claudia of Bedford; grandchildren, Stacie Ann Bennett, Eric Michael Bennett, Bryce Bennett and Thomas Daniel Bennett; great-grandchildren, Brynlea Rae Bennett, Madelyne Renee Bennett, Kaedyn Joshua Bennett and Carter Michael James Bennett; and sister, Barbara Sallee of Bedford.

Her parents; husband; brother, Ernest Faris; and sisters, Ellen Hobson, Rachel Starr, Anna Mary Gabbert, Izillah Bush, Nona Haley, and Kathryn Wade, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Brad Clark officiating. Graveside service will be at noon, Wednesday at Tunnelton Cemetery.

Mary Wanda Moser, 89, of Franklin, formerly of Bedford, died at 7:22 p.m. on Friday at the home of her daughter in Franklin.

Born June 5, 1921, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Raymond and Eva (Roberts) Taylor. She married Marlin Moser on April 6, 1946, and he died Feb. 26, 1991.

She was a homemaker and a 71-year member of the Faith Mission Church in Bedford.

She had worked for the Evangelistic Faith Mission, was a Pink Lady volunteer at Dunn Memorial Hospital for 10 years and was also a volunteer teacher for the Stone City Christian Academy for 17 years.

Survivors include one son, Robert “Bob” Moser and wife Bonnie of Bedford; two daughters, Ruth Anne Manns and companion Beth Manns of Franklin, and Tracy Thornton and husband Tom of Bargersville; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nila Clements of Peerless.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Betty Lou Taylor.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor Leonard Sankey and Pastor Stephen Hight officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

Roy L. Abel, 82, of Mitchell, passed away at 6:30 a.m. Friday at Owen Valley Health Campus in Spencer.

Born May 1, 1928, in West Baden Springs, he was the son of William and Grace (Allen) Abel. He married Margie Alice Parsons April 29, 1950, and she preceded him in death Feb. 11, 2000.

He was owner of A and A Tree Service and drove a truck, and attended the Campbellsburg First Baptist Church.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and served as a Tomb Guard Sentinal at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Surviving are daughters, Debbie Carol Johnson and husband Kevin of Bloomfield, Virginia Christine Abel-Sheppard and husband John of Gosport, Karen Jean Abel and husband Chris of Dallas, Texas and Shannon Ann Abel of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; son, Robert Terry of Mitchell; sisters, Betty Meehan-Forrest of West Baden Springs; 5 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

His parents; wife; and eleven brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Mitchell Cemetery with Lee Hupp officiating. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Charles “Butch” “Motor Mouth” Parish age 64, of Mitchell, passed away on Friday at IU Medical Center in Indianapolis, after a short illness.

He was born on Oct. 30, 1946 in Charlestown, to Charles and Margaret (Powell) Parish. He married Penny (Lynch) Parish on Dec. 11, 1965, in Burns City, and she survives.

He worked for General Motors Metal Fabricating Plant in Indianapolis for 30 years before retiring in 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Penny Parish of Mitchell; his mother, Margaret Parish of Mitchell, four children, Charles Parish and wife Dawn of Trafalger, Jeremy Parish and wife Alicia of Whiteland, Denise McCormick and husband John of Mitchell, and Deana Beeles and husband Mike of Mitchell; five grandsons; one granddaughter; four great-granddaughters; four sisters, Karen Passmore and husband Ron, Barbara Doyle, Sandra Parish, all of Mitchell, and Caroline McCormick and husband Paul of Indianapolis; one aunt, Helen Clouse of Mitchell; uncle Ken Powell and wife Carol of Denton, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, two nephews; and his grandparents.

Carole Kinley, 67, of Bedford, died at 7:30 a.m., on Friday, January 7, 2011, at Garden Villa from complications due to cancer.

Born August 16, 1943, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Robert Robinson and Mary Jane Crum. She was a line cook at Indiana University for 26 years.

Survivors include her mother, Mary Jane, of Ellettsville; her first husband, Michael Kinley of Bedford; two daughters, Traci Alltop and husband Kenneth of Bedford, and Angela Kinley of Bedford; a son, Carl Robinson of Ellettsville; five grandchildren, Zachary Cox, Nickolas Cox, Kortney Kinley, Kenneth and Katherine Alltop; two brothers, Gregory Robinson of Bloomington and Barry Robinson of Ellettsville; and a sister, Mary Lou Shelly of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert, and two sisters (in infancy).

Eugene E. Trinkle

Eugene E. “Gene” Trinkle, age 79, of Bloomington, died Thursday at his residence.

Born September 11, 1931, in Bloomington, he was the son of Edward and Gladys (Vaughn) Trinkle.

He was a self-employed painting contractor in the Bloomington area. He loved doing anything outdoors, whether it be fishing, hunting (especially mushroom hunting), and camping. He also loved to play euchre. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge #446 and had been very involved with Boy Scout camping activities.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. He was with the 25th Infantry Division in the areas of Chuuchon, Korea; Punch Bowl and Bloody Ridge as a squadron leader, heavy weapons machine gunner, and .30 caliber water cooled weaponry. He also served eight years in the standby reserve with 13 months of that time with the first cavalry division in Korea from 1962-1963 on the D.M.Z. in the Ninth Armored Recon. After two hitches in Korea, he was sent to Ft. George G. Maryland, where he was transferred to the 502th Trans. Trk Company working for the N.S.A. and security areas in and around Washington, D.C.

He is survived by his five children, Richard (Connie) Trinkle of Spencer, Jill Trinkle, Charlie (Nanette) Trinkle and Gina Riggen, all of Bloomington, and Tia S. (Eric) Deckard of Heltonville; one brother and sister-in-law, Leonard and Judy Trinkle of Bloomington; the mother of his children, Phyllis Trinkle Burkhart of Bloomington; his best friend and companion, LaDonna Riggen of Bloomington; and eight grandchildren, Johnny Lee Hettle, Stephanie Grossnickle Barnhill, Caleb Trinkle, Tabatha Trinkle, Eli Trinkle, Seth Trinkle, Rebekah Trinkle and Colin Deckard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one wife, Jane Trinkle; one sister, Doynetta Hyde; one brother, Warren Trinkle; and one granddaughter, Sarah Trinkle.

The funeral service will be on Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Day Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Alan Phillips officiating. Kenneth M. Plummer Jr., 80, of 23 ‘Q’ Street, Bedford, died at 4:10 a.m. on Friday at Garden Villa.

Born June 22, 1930, in Bedford, he was the son of Kenneth M. Plummer Sr. and Amy Lee (Cummings) Plummer. He married Ruth Stailey on Dec. 22, 1952, and she survives.

He was the former president of the Day & Carter Mortuary, retiring in 2006. He was a member and former trustee of the First Baptist Church, a member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM, Bedford York Rite Bodies, IFDA, life member and past commander of the Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion, Voiture 40 & 8, life member and former exalted ruler of the Bedford Elks Lodge, President of North Lawrence Holding Corp., former member of the Bedford School Board and Democratic City Councilman under the Lovell Harp administration.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He enjoyed several hobbies including farming, raising cattle, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth, of Bedford; one son, Marty Plummer and wife Roberta of Bedford; one daughter, Lee Ann Plummer of Bedford; one grandson, Jeremy Plummer of Bedford; and one great-grandson, Jesse Plummer of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Emerson Row, 92, Bedford, died at 10:18 p.m. on Thursday at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital.

Born July 12, 1918, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Odos and Grace (Akin) Row. He married Alberta Flinn on Aug. 17, 1940, and she survives.

He was retired from Clark & Rile Buick Agency in Bedford in 1962 then built homes until his retirement in 1980. He was a handyman for several years and was a charter member of the Southland Church of Christ where he served as a deacon and elder. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during WW II serving with the Pacific Fleet.

Survivors include his wife, Alberta Mae of Bedford; three sons, Robert Eugene Row of Bedford, Richard Donald Row of Newville, Pa., Timothy Allen Row of Huntsville, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three siblings, Eunice Hawkins, William Row, Dorothy Aardapple.

Born May 23, 1921, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Robert Lawrence and Mona (Reed) Leahy. She married Albert Baker “Dutch” Broglin on Aug. 6, 1950, and he preceded her in death on July 12, 2008.

She had been a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. She was a graduate of Bedford High School with the class of 1939.

Marjorie was a homemaker raising three children. Marjorie worked part time as a receptionist and also at the Lawrence House Gift Shop.

Survivors include one daughter, Alicia B. Parker and husband Matthew of Bedford; two sons, A. Christopher Broglin and wife Angie of Evansville and Jon Broglin of Oolitic; two grandsons, Harrison Parker of Bedford and Jordan Broglin of Evansville; one sister, Barbara Jean Steinhagen of Morristown, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two sisters, Carol Frances Quillen and Catherine Anne Sears.

Mark J. Miller, 57, of Bloomington died on Wednesday at his residence in Bloomington following an illness.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1953, in Sweetser, the son of James and Janet (Woodmansee) Miller.

He was vice president of Mays Chemical Co. in Indianapolis for over 20 years.

Mark was an avid Indianapolis Colts fan, a vintage movie buff, lover of Pink Floyd and Blue Oyster Cult and volunteered with numerous charitable organizations in the Marion County area. He particularly enjoyed working with the United Way of Marion County.

Survivors include his wife, Camille (Meadows) Miller of Bloomington; his children, Crystal Tipton of Sheridan, Cliff Tipton of Bedford, Chris Miller of Westfield and Jenni Miller of Surprise, Ariz.; his mother, Janet Miller of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and six grandchildren, Charles, Kaitlyn, William, Savannah, J.R. and Abby. Also surviving is one sister, Kathy Miller Perkins of Louisville, Ky. He is survived as well by his “furry children,” Junior Johnson and Chanel Miller.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Miller.

She was a hairdresser, homemaker and co-founder of Mills Markets Grocery Stores.

She was a graduate of Shawswick High School with the class of 1940.

She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Bedford.

Evelyn Elizabeth Wood died Tuesday at her home.

Born in Spink County, S.D., July 28, 1913, she was the daughter of John August and Albetina (Sundback) Anderson.

She married Maurice Bernard Wood in Redfield, S.D., July 16, 1940. He preceded her in death Nov. 15, 2008.

She was a homemaker who supported her husband in his managerial career with J.C. Penney Co., a role that required numerous relocations for the family. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Bedford, which she joined in 1957. Through her church activities, including her service as past president of United Methodist Women, and as an avid bridge player, she has made many friends. She was also a resident ambassador at Bliss House for two years.

Mrs. Wood is survived by a son, Richard J. (Sari); and a daughter, Sally Kay Alesia (Ronald); four grandchildren, James Alesia (Alice) of Fort Wayne, and Stephen Alesia (Tammy), Andrew Wood (Jennifer) and Sally Ann Torres (Lou), all of Indianapolis; and stepgrandson, Jason Little of New York City; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Orville, Fred and John Anderson; one sister, Edith Anderson Leverich; and one halfsister, Mable Anderson Lawless.

Born July 13, 1930, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Floyd and Sarah (Wright) Flynn. He married Lois Todd on July 12, 1952, and she survives.

He was a minister for over 40 years and served as the pastor at Paynetown Pentecostal Church for over 10 years. He was retired from NWSC Crane and a traveling evangelist for 30 years.

He was a veteran of the Korean War serving as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army where he received a purple heart.

Ersie Holmes, 92, of Avoca, died at 7:05 a.m. on Monday at Westview Manor Nursing and Rehab. Center in Bedford after a brief stay.

Born Oct. 17, 1918, in Casey County, Ky., she was the daughter of Samuel and Emily (Cobb) Sproles. She married Carl Holmes in May 1938 in Oolitic and he preceded her in death in 1988.

She was a graduate of Oolitic High School with the class of 1938. She retired from General Motors in 1983 and was a member of the Avoca Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Carl Dean Holmes and wife Carolyn and Gary Holmes and wife Jeannie all of Avoca; one daughter, Sharon Deckard and husband Phillip of Guthrie; five grandsons, Terry Holmes and wife Denise of Mitchell, David Holmes and wife Crystal, and Jeff Holmes and wife Angel, all of Avoca, Trent Holmes and wife Carrie of Bedford, and Carey Deckard and wife Janelle of Guthrie; two granddaughters, Jamie Day and husband Tim of Fayetteville and Nancy Reed of Buddha; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and caregivers, Judy Hamilton of Oolitic and Karen Wright of Buddha.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Janice Elaine Holmes (in infancy in 1939); one son, Layne Holmes in 1973; four brothers, James, Sam, William and Henry Sproles; four sisters, Marie Davidson, Pearl Moore, Ollie Hicks and Irene Mynatt; and one great-grandchild, Alora Reed (in infancy).

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Kyle Witmer and Tim Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Dishman Cemetery in Greene County. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Wednesday at the mortuary.

Earl Russell Crane, age 55 of Washington state, formerly of Bedford, passed away on Dec. 22, 2010 in Washington.

He was born on May 9, 1955, in Bedford, to Rufo & Alice (Bond) Crane. He married Judy Fjellman on May 30, 1999 and she survives.

He was a bicycle technician, carpenter, & Jack of all trades.

Surviving relatives include his wife Judy Crane of Washington, one daughter, Christina Shaw; two grandchildren, Audra Nicole Shaw, Cameron Michael Shaw; two brothers, Jim Crane of Bedford and Timothy Crane of Paoli; and one sister, Lisa Wilcoxen of Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Leann Mears, Ladonna Crane, Tina Crane Sullivan.

Born May 17, 1982, in Bedford, he was the son of Paul Jones and Denise (Owings) Kindred. He married Julie Jones and she survives.

He was a self-employed construction contractor and an avid deer hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman.

Survivors include his mother, Denise Kindred of Bedford; his father, Paul Jones and wife Sarah of Bedford; his children, Gabrielle Dawn, Abigail Mae, and Ethan Matthew Micheal; a stepdaughter, Valari Rayne; a sister, Alisha Marshall and husband Jeremy of Bedford; one brother, Aaron Jones and wife Mindy of Springville; two nieces, Alexis Deann and Emma Grace Marshall; one nephew, Liam Scott Marshall; his maternal grandfather, Richard Owings of Bloomington; his paternal grandfather, Jessie Jones of Springville; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Patricia Joan Hillenburg; his paternal grandmother, Georgia Wilma Jones; and a brother, Jeremy Reed Jones.

Paul Cummings, 67, Forsyth, Mo., passed away Thursday at the Table Rock Healthcare in Kimberling City, Mo.

Born June 16, 1943, in Bedford, he was the son of Sylvester and Ruby Cummings. He married Sunnie Beasley April 11, 1964 in Huron.

He served our nation in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Forsyth, Gideons International Forsyth Camp, Missouri Pilot Association, Missouri Quite Birds, and the American Legion. Paul worked many years as a corporate pilot for the Hamilton/Sundstrand Corporation. He moved to Forsyth, Mo. in 2001 from Rockford, Ill.

Surviving are his wife, Sunnie Cummings of Forsyth, Mo.; sons, Eric Cummings and wife Shelbi of Portage, Mich., and Patrick Cummings and wife Lori of Etters, Pa.; three grandsons, Nathan, Ethan, and Clark; and three granddaughters, Adison, Kiersten, and Hannah.

His parents; and sisters, Ruth Cox and Alice Blackburn, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at noon Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Myers officiating. Burial will be in Huron Cemetery. Kenneth A. McKamey, 91 of Mitchell, passed away at 8:10 p.m. Saturday at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Born April 30, 1919, in Cloverdale, he was the son of Guy E. and Mary Chloe (Pickens) McKamey. He married Esther B. Talbott Sept. 2, 1950.

He was employed 30-plus years at Indiana University as supervisor and inspector of building and grounds, and a chauffeur for Herman B Wells. Kenneth was a member of the Unionville Church of Christ.

He was a Master Sergeant in the Army during World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Esther B. McKamey of Mitchell; sister-in-law, Joanne Talbott of Mitchell; nephews, Glen Blackwell of Illinois, Chester Mark Talbott of Maryland, and Daniel Talbott of Indiana; and nieces, Donna Jean Davidson, of Indiana, Marty Blackwell of Illinois; and Toni Talbott of Indiana.

His parents; three infant siblings; a nephew; and a niece, preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Talbott Cemetery with Pastor Mickey Douglas officiating. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Jessie Goldsberry

Jessie Goldsberry, 87, of Shoals, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Loogootee Nursing Center in Loogootee.

She was born May 31, 1923, in Martin County, the son of Ceasar and Mary (Keedy) Baker. She married Robert L. “Bob” Goldsberry on Dec. 21, 1946, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 2003.

She retired after 15 years from NAD Crane, and was also employed by Shoals Community Schools, as a teachers aide for 15 years.

She was a member of Trinity Springs Christian Church and was a graduate of Trinity Springs High School.

Survivors include one son, James R. and Phyllis Goldsberry of Shoals; granddaughters, Michelle Goldsberry of Mitchell and Tracey Goldsberry Woosley of Boonville; four great-grandchildren, Jessica and Kyle Courtright and Lezlie and Damion Hart; many nieces and nephews; and a wealth of close friends in Shoals and the surrounding area.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert; seven brothers; and three sisters.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Queen-Lee Funeral Home in Shoals. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Earl Wayne Guthrie, 61, Medora, died at 6:44 p.m. on Friday at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour.

He was born Oct. 3, 1949, in Jackson County, the son of Floyd A. and Nellie C. (Daulton) Guthrie. He married Pamela Sue England on Dec. 20, 1969, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Medora, and she survives.

He worked for Cummins Engine Company for over 32 years.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Medora and a member of American Legion Post No. 89 in Seymour. He was a 1967 graduate of Tunnelton High School.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He loved his grandchildren, cutting wood, fishing, and cooking outdoors.

Surviving with his wife, Pamela Sue Guthrie of Medora; are two daughters, Kristy (Matt) Prewitt and Jamey Guthrie, both of Medora; three grandchildren, Monika Bevers, Mattison Prewitt, and Bobby McClusky; and one brother, Donald Guthrie of Medora.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Floyd Guthrie Jr., Tom Guthrie, and Henry “Buck” Guthrie; and one sister, Christian Robison.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Medora with Pastor Jack Belk officiating. Burial will following in Fairview Cemetery in Brownstown with military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 1925, Amerian Legion Post No. 89, Disabled American Veterans Post No. 47, and Korea and Vietnam Veterans Post No. 7, all of Seymour.

Harold W. Scherschel, 64, of Indianapolis, departed this life January 1, 2011.

He was born March 24, 1946, in Bedford, to Edward and Pauline (Crabb) Scherschel. Harold worked as a telecommunications engineer for over 40 years, retiring in 2008 from Avaya Communications.

He was a longtime and dedicated member of St. Joseph Catholic Chapel, where he had served as treasurer for over 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward; and brother, Carl Scherschel.

Harold is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Judy (Baker) Scherschel; daughters, Kathi (Doug) Keen, Tami (Bill) Crawford, and Teri (J.R.) Williams; mother, Pauline Scherschel; sister, Ann Scherschel; brothers, Ben (Rose), Bernie, and Gary (Sheila) Scherschel; sister-in-law, Carol Scherschel; and nine loving grandchildren. Requiem Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Chapel (245 West Broadway Street in Greenwood). Interment Calvary Cemetery, Indianapolis.

Dorothy May Humes, 77, of Bedford, died at 3:25 p.m. on Thursday, December 30, 2010, at her home, with her husband and daughter by her side.

Born September 26, 1933, in Monroe County Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Edley and Nora Williams.

She was married on November 5th, 1954, to Gene Burnell Humes.

Other than her husband, survivors also include a son, Reed Humes and his wife Gabriela of Mesa, AZ and a daughter, Shawna Andrews and her husband Ken, of Atlanta, GA.

Two grandaughters Nichole Marie, of Mesa, AZ and Skylar Lauren, of Atlanta GA., a brother Benny Williams, of Nashville, TN, and preceding her in death, brothers Donald and Dossey Williams of KY.

Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Bedford; a past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star; and was retired from Stone City Products in 1997.
