3/31/98 Brooking – Andrew Logan Brooking of Mitchell, IN, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Bloomington Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident on Tuesday evening. Born on October 15, 1900, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Aaron Brooking and Annette (Milligan) Brooking Winegar. Surviving are his father and step-mother, Aaron and Melanie Brooking of Paoli, IN; mother and step-father, Annette and Scott Winegar of Mitchell, IN; two brothers, Jacob and Jordin, both at home; one step-sister, Kacy Winegar of Rochester, IN; one step-brother, Garrett Winegar of Rochester, IN; maternal grandparents, Clarence and Gayle Milligan of Copperas Cove, TX, and Flossie Sloan of Mitchell, IN; paternal grandparents, Carl and Phyllis Brooking of Bedford; maternal step-grandparents, Marcia and Ronnie Winegar of Heltonville, IN, and James and Alma Butler of Paoli, IN; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was a first-grade student at Burris Elementary School in Mitchell and attended Crossroads Community Church in Needmore. Born on March 30, 1936, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Noble and Bernice (Ward) Watson. She married Kenneth (Bill) Tirey on July 9, 1955, and he died January 14, 1994. Surviving are one son, Scott Tirey of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Cindy Ludlow of Columbus, OH; two sisters, Dorothy Dick and Carolyn Jones, both of Bloomington; three brothers: Larry and Richard Watson, both of Bedford, and Robert Watson of Florida; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, and one sister. She founded Bedford Hearing Aid Specialists in 1984 and was a member of Tulip Street Christian Church in Mitchell. Webb – Mary Jane Webb of Malvern, Ark, formerly of Bedford, died Tuesday, March 31, 1998, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. Ark. Born on September 4, 1921, in New York City, she was the daughter of Salvatore and Teresa Juliano. She married Merida Orville Webb on May 18, 1951, in Belton, TX, and he survives. Also surviving are two sons: Henry Mason of FL, and Tom Webb of Bedford, IN; one daughter, Mary Ann Glatzle of New York City; five grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. She was a homemaker and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Malvern. Born on May 14, 1908, in Hartford City, IN, she was the daughter of George B. and Maggie Mae (Wilson) Tippett. She married Albert Goff St. on December 9, 1924, and he died in May, 1973. Surviving are two sons: Albert Goff Jr. of Lusby, MD, and Harold Goff of Fort Myers, FL; one daughter, Georgia Kelley of Springville, IN; two brothers, Virgil Tippett of Winston-Salem, N.S., and L. T. Tippett of Huntington, W.V.; twelve grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Glenn Tippett. She was a retired postal clerk in Springville, with twenty years service, and was a member of Life Tabernacle in Springville. Born in Columbus, IN, on August 28, 1948, he was the son of Theodore and Mary Ann (Parker) Rodman. He married Diane Eicle on November 8, 1993, and she survives. Also surviving are one son, Wilburn Rodman, Jr. at home, three daughters: Billie, Amanda, and Britteny Rodman, all at home; his father, Theodore Rodman of Bedford; five sisters: Diann Grant, Marilyn Meadows, Anita Homer, and Mickee Gilbert, all of Bedford, and Barbara Rodman of Mitchell; three brothers: Bill Rodman and Randy Rodman, both of Bedford, and Theodore Rodman Jr. of Benton, Ark. He was preceded in death by his mother. He was a carpenter and attended First Church of the Nazarene. Reynolds of Mitchell, IN, passed away Saturday, March 28, 1998, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on July 1, 1906, in Jackson County, IN, she was the daughter of Doctor and Eleanor (Bever) Baughman. She married Arthur Reynoolds on January 23, 1023, and he preceded her in death on April 9, 1979. Surviving are three sons: Menlo (Al) Reynolds of Greensburg, IN, Charles Reynolds of Garland, TX, and Jerry Reynolds of Bloomington, IN; one sister, Mary McNeely of Mitchell, IN; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sons: Richard, Lowell, and Kenneth Reynolds; four brothers: Spencer, Walter, Edward, and James Baughman; and one grandson, Michael Reynolds. She was a member of the Bedford First Church of the Nazarene. Born on June 7, 1934, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Fred and Belva (Jones) Hopkins. He married Deloris Anderson, and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Debby Spires of Bedford; two stepdaughters: Lisa Crutchfield of Madison, IN, and Penny Manion of Owensburg; one stepson, Scott Anderson of Springville; one brother, William Hopkins of Mitchell, IN; one sister, Cathrine Ratliff of Mitchell, IN; eight grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Cynthia King; one sister, and one brother in infancy. He was retired from Ralph Rogers, Inc. and was a member of Crossroads Community Church, Eagles Lodge No. 654 of Bedford and the Bedford Boat & Sportsmen's Club. He was born in Lafayette, TN, on December 6, 1920, the son of Willie and Annie (Fishburn) Pirtle. Surviving are one daughter, Henrietta Pirtle of Bedford; two sisters, Willie Barnfield and Maynard Gammons, Bother of Lafayette, TN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Ruby Pirtle, and two brothers, Earl D. and Wilson Pirtle. A veteran of World War II, he was a plaster and drywall finisher in Indiana and Tennessee. A memorial service for Henry Pirtle will be scheduled at a later date in Lafayette, TN. Chastain of Bedford died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on February 26, 1925, in Lawrence County, IN, she was the daughter of Frank and Martha A. (Dowling) Jenkins. She married Howard L. Chastain on December 7, 1941, and he survives. Also surviving are two sons: Russell Chastain of Evansville, IN, and Frank Chastain of Copperas Cove, TX; one brother, Milton Jenkins of Hemet, CA; two granddaughters, six step-grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Minnie Jenkins; one brother, Frank Jenkins; and one granddaughter. She was a machine operator at M. Fine & Sons for forty years and was a charter member of Davis Memorial Church of the Nazarene in Bedford. Born on October 30, 1923, in Fayetteville, IN, he was the son of Oba Dale and Ruby (Rainey) Pierce Jones. He married Mary Frances Gipson on February 11, 1946, and she survives. Also surviving are one son, David M. Pierce of Clarksville, IN,; four sisters: Katherine Ray and Norma Sue Doty, both of Bedford, Alice Marie Green of Marion, IN, and Jane Embock of Indianapolis; one step-sister, Elsie Long of Muncie; three step-brothers: Lowell Jones of Yorktown, IN, Vurtis Jones and Harold Jones of Muncie, IN; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father, Cecil Jones; one son, Ronald E. Pierce; and three brothers: Lester, Robert, and Opel Pierce. He was a World War II Army veteran, a retired railroad foreman at the Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane, and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and Hilltop Pentecostal Church. Arrangements are pending at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. 3/23/98 Carmichael – Jewell Beatrice Carmichael of Springville, IN, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on Aril 21, 1918, in Oolitic, IN, she was the daughter of Noble and Frances (Stultz) Hackney. She married Dwight Davis Carmichael on October 14, 1939, and he died March 23, 1991. Surviving are three daughters: Carol Appleby and Ruby Fletcher, both of Bedford, and Judy Bowman of Columbus, IN; one son, Dwight N. Carmichael of Springville, IN; two brothers: Marvin N. Hackney of Sullivan, IN, and John Hackney of Bedford; one sister, Dora Rowe of Glendale, IN; twelve grandchildren, and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Donna Faye in infancy and Kathy Bowman; one brother, Conrad Hackney; and one sister, Kathleen Lehman. She had been an elementary school teacher at Fayetteville and Springville, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Owensburg Church of Christ, Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association, and the American Association of Retired Persons. Covey – Jessie Marie Covey of Bedford died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was born in Lawrence County, IN, on May 20, 1919, the daughter of Edgar and Cloie Marie (Turner) Southern. She married Clarence Ephriam Covey on September 25, 1928, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one son, the Rev. C. Ronald Covey of Muncie, IN; one daughter, Connie Covey Baldwin of Bedford; one brother, Lowell Southern of Bedford; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and ten step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one sister, Audrey Elaine Southern, and one brother, Norman Southern. Another brother, Earl Richard Southern, died two hours after Jessie. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Born in Lawrence County, IN, on August 28, 1922, he was the son of Edgar and Cloie Marie (Turner) Southern. He married F. Jane Wint on July 20, 1941, and she died September 6, 1986. Surviving are two daughters: Myrna Day Gould and Diana Walton, both of Bedford; two sons: Larry Southern of Williams, IN, and David Southern of Bedford; one brother, Lowell K. Southern of Bedford; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren, and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded by two sisters, Audry Elaine Southern and Jessie Marie Covey, who died two hours before Earl; one brother, Norman Southern, and one great-grandson. He was a World War II Army veteran and was retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center-Crane. He was a member of the Norman Conservation Club and was of Protestant faith. Stipp of Bedford died Monday, March 23, 1998, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born in Lawrence County, IN, on December 22, 1924, he was the son of Leland and Catherine (Myers) Stipp. He married Mary Margaret Fox on September 29, 1951, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons: Robert G. Stipp II of Bedford and John K Stipp of Bloomington, IN; one daughter, Claudia A. Bennett of Bedford; one sister, Peggy Jackson of Leighton, AL; and four grandchildren. He was a farmer, the former owner of Stipp Oliver Farm Equipment Sales, and served on the Lawrence County Council for seventeen years. A World War II Navy veteran, he was Lawrence County's Veterans Affairs Officer from 1983 to 1993. He was a charter member of the National Cattleman's Association and had many agricultural awards. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250, Mitchell. Services for Robert Stipp will be at 10:00 a.. Surviving in addition to the parents are the paternal grandparents, Danny and Donna Sowders of Bedford; the maternal grandparents, Clarence and Nan Poole of Bedford; one sister, Molly Sowders, at home; one brother, Jacob Sowders, at home, and the paternal great-grandmother, Betty Scheffel of Bedford. Born In Kentucky on March 19, 1912, she was the daughter of Francis M. and Emma (Ware) McKee. She married Earl Hughes on April 14, 1936, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, Ted Hughes of Mitchell, IN, four grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. King – Darrell Wayne King of Huron, IN, died Saturday, March 21, 1998, at his residence. Born on October 29, 1955, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Phillip Eugene and Margaret Sue (Pridemore) King. Surviving are two sons, Eric Wayne and Steven Mathew King, both of Huron; his parents; a companion, Debbie Lancaster of Huron; three brothers: Carroll King of Mitchell, Dennis and Scott King, both of Huron; and two sisters: Marlene Stancombe and Delema Moffatt, both of Mitchell, IN. He was employed at Preferred Technical Group and had been a member of the Huron Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years, presently serving as assistant fire chief. He was born on February 22, 1944, in Bedford, IN, the son of Chester F. and Virginia Ruth (Sowder) Sipes. He married Wanda F. Young in Carmi, IL, on May 25, 1968, and she survives. Also surving are one son, Darren Sipes of Seymour, IN, one brother, Barry Sipes of Plainfield, IN; and two grandsons. He was a former owner of Standard Oil Bulk Plant in Columbus and a former employee of Kiel Brothers Oil Company, where he was a marketing representative for twelve years. He was a Vietnam War Army veteran. She was born on December 5, 1915, in Illinois, the daughter of Roy and Clara (Ellis) Brewer. She married John Robert Turner, and he preceded her in death. Surviving are one sister, Frankie Baker of Bedford, three nephews, and one niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons: Jack E. Mohl and Robert Michael Mohl; and one brother, John L. She was born on March 24, 1924, in Mitchell, IN, the daughter of Lester and Mary Louis (Ritchison) Hughes. She married Eleminal Edward Basinger on April 17, 1944, and he died November 22, 1978. Surviving are two sons: Jack Basinger of Heltonville, IN, and Tim A. Basinger of Orleans, IN; her stepmother, Iona Hughes of Bedford; one stepdaughter, Doris May Holtsclaw of Bedford; one brother, Don Hughes of Lawrenceport, IN; two sisters: Betty Brown of Leesville, IN, and Barbara Aufenberg of Bedford; three grandsons, and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. She was a homemaker. Ira – Harold Lee Ira of Lakeland, FL, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at his residence. Born on July 7, 1934, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of William and Helen (Anderson) Ira St. He married Louise Brown, and she survives. Also surviving is one son, Rodney Ira of Bloomington, IN; three daughters: Melissa Ira, Amy Ira, and Carla Cowden, all of Bloomington; five sisters, Winnie of Jackson, TN, Sharon of Mitchell, IN; Mary Ann Mann and Susie McCoy, both of Freetown, IN, Cathy Sweeney of Columbus, IN; one brother, William Ira Jr of Bedford, and six grandchildren. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Lakeland and the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14. He worked as a sales representative for a monument and granite company. Pickens of Bedford died Monday, March 17, 1998, at Hospitality House in Bedford. She was born on September 11, 1925, in Bakertown, KY, the daughter of Claude and Lela (Smith) Garrett. She married Dale B. Pickens, and he survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Linda Holt of Martinsville; one sister, Ollie Brann of Cloverdale, IN; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Floyd Garrett; two sisters: Thelma Hawkins and Reba Hawkins; and one grandson. She retired after thirty years of service from the housekeeping department at Indiana University and was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was born in Lawrence County, IN, on March 5, 1921, the son of Chester and Elsie (Crooke) Hammersley. He married Carrie Combs on January 31, 1942, and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Pamela Harden of Ellettsville, IN; one sister, Mildred Brazzel of Bedford; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He served on the board of commissioners of the Bedford Housing Authority for thirteen years. He had worked for his family's business, Bedford Foundry & Machine Co, leaving in 1962 as president of the Yuba division. After retiring he became a consulting engineer with Westinghouse Corp., Scientific Ecology Group in Oak Ridge, TN, where he built the world's largest metal decontamination/reuse environmental facility. A 1943 graduate of Bedford High School, he graduated from Purdue University in 1948. He was a past president of the Boys Club in Bedford and Bedford Chamber of Commerce and a former chairman of the United Fund Drive. He was a member of the Elk and Rotary Clubs, the Indiana Manufacturers Association, National and North Carolina Societies of Professional Engineers, and the National Council of Engineering Examiners. He was a 32nd degree Mason and member of Scottish Rite. Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. 3/02/98 Kelley – Connie Sue Kelley of Evansville, IN, formerly of Mitchell, passed away Monday, March 2, 1998, at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. Born November 2, 1965, in New Orleans, LA, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Neely) Boling. She married Keith L. Kelley on June 14, 1986, and he survives. Surviving with the husband, Staff Sergeant Keith L. Kelley, are one daughter, Keeshia Kelley of Evansvillle, IN; one son Kurtis Kelley of Evansville, IN; her parents, John and Mary Boling of Columbus, OH; three sisters: Linda Clemmons of Jasonville, IN, Susan Olson of Mitchell, IN, and Sandy Hammond of Columbus, OH; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Floyd and Mary Neely and Aubry and Hattie Boling. She was a 1983 graduate of Mitchell High School, Vincennes University, and had attended the University of Evansville. She was a member of Bride of Christ Fellowship. Pruett – Lanta Pruett of Bedford died Monday, March 2, 1998, at Hospitality House. Born on July 1, 1908, in Boone County, IN, she was the daughter of Oscar and Zenia (Ragsdale) Swales. She married Ollin Pruitt, and he died on August 19, 1996. Surviving are several nieces and nephews, including her caregivers, Barbara Hillenburg and Mary Lou Thompson of Bedford and Nita Pruett of Oolitic, and two cousins. She was preceded in death by one brother, Horace Swales. She had taught school in Alaska and retired from the Department of Interior. She attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one sister, Agnes Beasley, and four brothers: Martin, Charles, Frank, and Gablon White. She was retired from M. Fine & Sons as a machine operator. The daughter of Thomas and Stella (Cooper) Beasley, she was born in Lawrence County, IN, on October 28, 1918. She married Harold M. Meadows on January 6, 1936, and he survives. Also surviving are three sisters: Edna Jackson, Lois Lane, and Edith Tincher, all of Bedford; one brother, Raymond Beasley of Bedford, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. She was a homemaker and had worked at RCA in Bloomington. She attended the Solsberry Christian Church.
