6/29/97

Britt – James M. Britt, Bedford, died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. The son of James and Edna (Corbin) Britt, he was born on August 23, 1934, in Bedford.

He was retired from Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago after 35 years as an LPN.

James Britt is survived by one sister: Marilea Deckard of Bedford; one brother: Phillip Britt of Ft. Worth, TX; two brothers in-law: John R. Gee of Northfield, IL, and Raymond E. Deckard of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by the parents, one sister, Phyllis Gee and two step-sisters–Betty Lemons and Grace Britt.

Of Protestant faith, he was a former member of the Indiana National Guard, where he served with the Bedford unit for some time.

The funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2nd, at the graveside at Beech Grove Cemetery. the Rev. J. D. Pickett officiating, with burial following. Friends may call from 12:00 noon until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2nd, at the mortuary.

Pate – Gwendolyn S. Pate of Bedford died Sunday, June 29, 1997, at Hospitality House in Bedford. Born on June 29, 1912, in Burnside, KY, she was the daughter of Isaac Frank and Persie (Owen) Ward. She married Stanley Pate on April 3, 1931, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Sharleen Grissom of Bedford; one sister, Griselda Lewis of Akron, OH; and two nephews.

She was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in Bedford. A retired school teacher and librarian in Lawrence County, she was a member of Retired Teachers Association, American Association of University Women, Bedford Little Theatre, Lawrence County Historical Society, Leesville Pioneers, and the Indiana University Alumni Association.

Services for Gwendolyn Pate will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 2nd, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home, Bedford. Burial will follow in Leesville Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Stafford – Wanda Marlene Hale Stafford, Mitchell, died on Sunday, June 29, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. She was born in Lawrence County on September 16, 1933, the daughter of General Floyd and Carrie (Honeycutt) Hale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Stafford, and by one brother, Dale Eugene Hale, who died in infancy.

She is survived by one son: Gary Lane Grubb of Mitchell; three granddaughters; two sisters; Wilma Stailey of Oolitic and Mary Winkler of Mitchell; and one brother, Floyd Hale, Jr. of Williams.

Wanda Stafford was a member of the Oolitic Trinity Pentecostal Church and was a retired Delta Airlines employee.

Inman – Andes Lee Inman, Mitchell, died on Saturday, June 28, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born on April 13, 1919, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Andrew and Frona (Blake) Inman. On August 10, 1942, he married Mary Lois Freeman, who preceded him in death.

He is survived by two sons: David Inman and Darrell Inman of Bedford; three grandchildren; five sisters: Helen Phipps, Imogene Brock, Berdinia May, and June Wisely, all of Bloomington, and Betty Lewis of Shoals; and two brothers: Bobby Brock of Shoals and James Brock of Bloomington. In addition to the wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Dale Inman.

A veteran of WW II serving with the U.S. Army, he was a member of the American Legion Gillen Post #33 of Bedford and V.F.W. Post, and a member of La Societe Forty & Eight Voiture 1192. He was retired from NAD Crane.

The funeral service for Andes Inman will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1st, at The Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Merla Craig officiating. Burial will be in Williams Cemetery. Pemberton – Levi Nicholas Pemberton, 5 months old, of Bedford, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born January 14, 1997, in Bedford, he was the son of Terry Pemberton, Jr. and Jona Lynn. Surviving in addition to the parents of Bedford, are one sister, Kiristen; maternal grandparents: Lola and Rich Nicholson and Phillip and Rhea Lynn, all of Bedford; paternal grandparents: Terry and Becky Pemberton of Bedford; maternal great-grandmothers, Clara Noel and Thelma Lynn, both of Bedford; paternal great-grandparents: Vanie and Bonnie Richison of Nikomis, FL; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by maternal great-grandfathers: Donald Noel and Raymond Lynn; and paternal great grandparents: Bertha and Robert Pemberton.

There will be private family services, and burial will be in Crawford Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Saturday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Hodges – Virginia F. Hodges, Bedford, died on Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at Westview Manor Nursing Home. Born on June 29, 1916, she was the daughter of Rolla and Emma (Fry) Moore. She married John R. Hodges on March 3, 1941.

She is survived by the husband; two sons: John H Hodges of Indianapolis, and Donald E. Hodges of Veroqua, WI; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and three sisters: Regina Robinson, Alice Moore, and Elizabeth Girdley, all of Bloomington. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Mary C. Wagoner.

After teaching 40 years in Bedford area schools, she retired in 1981. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association, and a life-long member of Delta Sigma Kappa Sorority.

Smith – Orville Smith, Bedford, died on Tuesday, June 24, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford, IN, on June 8, 1929, the son of Orville and Josie (Melvin) Smith. He married Kathryn Sons on February 13, 1947, and she preceded him in death.

He is survived by two daughters: Brenda Fleetwood of Bedford, and Karon Hill of Bloomington; one son, Michael Smith of Solsberry, IN; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was the oldest of thirteen brothers and sisters.

Of Pentecostal Faith, he attended Friendly Bible Church in Bedford. He was a WW II Army veteran and a truck driver, retired from Gladieux Trucking. He last worked for Pinkerton Security.

Bowden – Naomi Faye Bowden, Mitchell, passed away Monday, June 23, 1997, at her residence. Born November 11, 1920, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Ora and Minnie (Gray) Watterson. She married Willis Bowden February 21, 1948, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one daughter, Rebecca Goldsberry of Mitchell; three brothers: Fred Watterson of Mitchell, John Watterson of Arizona, and Roy Watterson of Florida; three sisters: Sylvia Jones of Muncie, Mary McCameron of Bedford, and Betty Roach of Bedford; 3 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters — Zelma and Helen, and four brothers Ed, Ralph, Don, and Stanley.

Naomi Bowden was a member of the Huron Church of God.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday in the Memorial Chapel of the Chastain Funeral Home with Rev. Doug Lucy officiating. Burial will be in Port William Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. Wednesday and after 8:30 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

Shepperd – Russell W. Shepperd, Sr. of Bedford, died Monday, June 23, 1997, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. The son of John Burton and Mary Elizabeth Shepperd, he was born September 13, 1924, in Adair County, KY. He married Sandra Perry on January 21, 1971, and she survives.

Surviving in addition to the wife are six daughters: Laura Shepperd and Kathy Harvey, both of Indianapolis, Gwen Norman, Jacqueline Rollins, Karen Dalton, and Deanna Stalder, all of Bedford; two sons: Donnie Perry and Rusty Shepperd, Jr., both of Bedford; twenty-six grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; four brothers: Ovel Burton and Marvin Burton, both of Edinburg, IN, Al Burton of Dilley, TX, and Gordon Shepperd of Indianapolis; two sisters: Ella Vincent of Bedford, and Rose Petree of Jamestown, TN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, three brothers, and his parents.

Russell Shepperd was a self-employed business man and owner of Shepperd Auto Sales. He was of Apostolic Pentecostal Faith and a member of Bedford Gospel Tabernacle Church. He was a WW II veteran with the Coast Guard.

Funeral services for Russell Shepperd will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 27th, at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Revs. David Lewis and Donald Deck officiating. His grandsons will be pall bearers and military rites will be accorded at the grave by members of the American Legion Gillen Post #33. Taylor – Raymond C. Taylor, Bedford, passed away on Sunday, June 22, 1997, at Mitchell Manor. The son of Charles and Dora (Reddick) Taylor, he was born July 18, 1900, in Lawrence County, IN. He married Eva Roberts on September 11, 1920, and she preceded him in death. He is survived by one daughter, Wanda Moser of Bedford; one niece, Nila Clements of Peerless, IN; nine grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; eleven great great grandchildren; and several other nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were one daughter, two sisters, Ruth Mueller and Berniece Taylor; one brother, Rowe Taylor; and four half-brothers.

Raymond Taylor was a diamond sawyer and retired from NAD Crane. He was a member of Faith Mission Church and was a veteran of WW I (American Expeditionary Forces in France, 1918.

The funeral will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25th, at The Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Leonard Sankey officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Taylor – William James Taylor of Bedford died Sunday, June 22, 1997. He was born January 18, 1912 in Lawrence County, IN to Orville and Lucy Jane (Early) Taylor. He married Helen Hubbard on August 20, 1935. She preceded him in death. He is survived by one son, William Taylor, Jr., three grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. An employee of Mills Market for 30 years, he was of Baptist faith.

Grissom – Douglas M. Grissom, Bedford, passed away Saturday, June 21, 1997, at White River Lodge in Bedford. Born February 1, 1922, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of William Milton and Violet Pearl (Ryburn) Grissom.

He is survived by one brother, Richard Grissom of Mitchell; two sisters, Vilena Leger of Salem, and Martha Atchason of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ryburn Grissom and Forrest Grissom, and two sisters.

Stroup – Doris J. Stroup, Bedford, died on Friday, June 20, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was born on October 9, 1931, in Rockport, IN. the daughter of Opal Erma Kline. On October 21, 1950, she married Robert Stroup, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son: Robert Stroup of Bedford; three daughters; Lydia Whitworth of Michigan, Irma Jean Blackburn of Springville, IN, and Barbara Bennett of NC; six grandsons; one granddaughter; three sisters: Brenda Emerson of Kentucky, Roma Bryant of Spencer Co, IN and Patricia Daniel of Cincinnati; four brothers: Joe, Thomas, Jerry, Robert, all of Spencer Co., IN. In addition to the parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers, and one son.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Kirkham – Ruth Marie Kirkham, Bloomington, died Thursday, June 19, 1997, at the Hospitality House in Bloomington. She was born on October 29, 1922, in Bedford, IN, to Harry and Maggie (Ray) Harris. On December 21, 1946, she married Scott Kirkham, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter; Patricia Lea Higgins of Bloomington; one son; Bradley Scott Kirkham of West Grove, PA; five grandchildren; one sister, Helen Chenoweth of San Diego, CA; and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by the parents, the husband, and one son, Michael.

She was a homemaker and a member of The Grace United Methodist Church of Bedford.

Boling – James E. Boling, Jr., age 77, of Chicago, and a former resident of Orleans, passed away Saturday, June 14, 1997, at the VA Medical Center in Danville, IL. Born September 25, 1919, in Washington County, IN, he was the son of James and Essie (Hedrick) Boling. He married Mildred Hawthorne on June 3, 1946, and she preceded him in death.

He was a retired maintenance man and troubleshooter for church carillons and was employed by Deagen Inc. He was a United States Army veteran of WW II and was a member of Corvair Car Club.

Surviving are three sons: Richard A. Boling of Chicago, Michael N. Boling of Annandale, VA, and Stephen G. Boling of Peoria, IL; five brothers: Marvin Boling of Ft. Wayne, Howard Boling of Saltillo, Norman Boling of Borden, Robert Boling of Charlestown, and Bill Boling of Jeffersonville; two sisters: Betty Wilson of Salem and Marceda Newton of St. Bernice; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a brother, Charles Boling.

Mitchell – Sheldon Ernest ("Ernie") Mitchell, Bedford, died Saturday, June 14, 1997, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. The son of Clifford and Minnie (Galimore) Mitchell, he was born April 25, 1936, in Monroe County, IN. He married Norma Jean Cooper on January 11, 1959, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Greg Mitchell of Mitchell, IN; one daughter, Lori Mitchell of Mitchell, IN; five grandchildren; and two brothers, Stanley Hancock of Danville, IL, and Wayne Hancock of Bedford, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Loren Hancock; and a son, Ernest Dean Mitchell.

Sheldon Ernest Mitchell was retired from the Bedford Water Works in 1995. He attended Englewood Baptist Church, was an Army veteran, and a member of the Bedford Boat and Sportsmen Club.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 18th, at 10:00 a.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Rev. David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow at Mitchell Cemetery in Monroe County. Calling hours are 3-9 p.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 17th.

Brassfield – Donald S. Brassfield, Bedford, died suddenly on Friday, June 13, 1997. Born on November 3, 1948, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of John E. and Alice (Piper) Brassfield. On February 17, 1993, he married Julie Evans Volz, who survives.

Also surviving are the father; two daughters, Mrs. Tim (Melinda Beth) Brown and Allison Lea Brassfield, both of Bedford; one step-daughter, Cheryl Lynne Volz of Bloomington, IN; one grandson, Jarrett Layne Brown; one sister, Cindy Vaught of Indianapolis, IN; two nieces; three nephews; and one great niece. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Donald Brassfield was a journeyman tool & die maker with Stone City Products and formerly E & M Tool in Bedford. He was a graduate of ITT with a degree in Tool Design Engineering and I.C.S. with a Degree in Tool & Die Making. He was a member of First Church of God in Bedford and a long time member of Henpecked Bowling League and Broadview Industrial Bowling Leagues.

The funeral service for Donald Brassfield will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18th, at the First Baptist Church of Bedford, with the Revs. Lewis Williams and Jon Lineback officiating. Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery. Stuckey – Helen Fields Stuckey, Bedford, died Thursday, June 12, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born November 20, 1920, in Orleans, IN, she was the daughter of Clauncey and Opal (Richardson) Herndon. On April 14, 1940 she married William Stuckey, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by two sons, William H. Stuckey of Brookville, IN, and Clay W. Stuckey of Bedford, and by four grandchildren.

Helen Stuckey was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church of Bedford. A 1938 graduate of Bedford High School, she remained active in her class activity and reunion planning.

Way – Annie Way, Bedford, died on Wednesday, June 11, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. She was born December 7, 1919, in Kentucky, the daughter of Garrett and Lucy (Childers) Mills. On December 28, 1942, she married Dale Kern, who died in 1950. On September 5, 1957, she married William G. Way, who died in 1968. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Annabelle Batson; one brother, Tip Mills; one step-son; and one step-daughter.

She is survived by two sons: Larry Kern of Bedford and William Way of Indianapolis; five step-sons; four step-daughters; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Annie Way was a homemaker and a member of Oolitic Pentecostal Church.

Armstrong – Lowell Fount Armstrong, Bedford, died Tuesday, June 10, 1997, at his residence. The son of Carl and Rose (Craig) Armstrong, he was born January 26, 1919, in Lawrence County. He was reared by his step-father, Lenas Pruett. In February, 1941, he married Catherine Hamilton, who preceded him in death. In January, 1981, he married Mary Jo Haley Bolton, and she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Fount Lowell Armstrong of Largo,FL; three grandchildren: three great grandchildren; two brothers, Otis Armstrong of New Port Richey, FL and Cecil Armstrong of Williams, IN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Emerson Pruett and John Winifred Pruett.

He was an Indiana University graduate with a B.S. in Education and a M.S. in Administration and Education. He was a former teacher for Mitchell Elementary Schools, a former principal of Riley & Emerson Schools in Mitchell, and acting superintendent of the Mitchell Schools for a period of time. He had also taught in the Shoals Elementary Schools. A World War II Veteran (Army), he was decorated with a Purple Heart. He was a member of First Church of God in Bedford, Mitchell Masonic Lodge A&FM, Mitchell American Legion Post #250, VFW Oolitic 1686, Indiana State Retired Teachers Association, Lawrence County Retired Teachers, and Former Indiana Principal's Association.

The funeral service will be Friday, June 13th, at 1:00 p.m. at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with the Revs. Floyd Brick and James Woodward officiating. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery in Shoals, IN. Friends may call Thursday, June 12th, from 2-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Masonic Rites will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. Military graveside rites will be accorded by members of the American Legion, Cecil C. Martin Lodge #250 of Mitchell.

Higgins – Caroline McLeod Higgins, Chicago (formerly of Chapel Hill, NC), died on Tuesday, June 10, 1997 at Edgewater Medical Center in Chicago. Born on March 9, 1911 in Lawrence Co., IN, she was the daughter of Donald G. and Ruth (Freeland) McLeod. On July 7, 1935, she married Eskie Higgins, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one brother, John F. McLeod.

She is survived by one son, J. D. Higgins of Chicago, IL; one brother, Donald G. McLeod, Jr. of Chapel Hill, NC; and two nieces.

Caroline Higgins was a homemaker, a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church, and a member of D.A.R.

Fender – Ray Fender, Tucson, AZ, died on Monday, June 9, 1997, at the residence. The son of Ellis and Ophie (Mitchell) Fender, he was born in Lawrence County, IN, on February 12, 1919. He married Gladys Hack, who survives.

In addition to the wife of Arizona he is also survived by one son, Don Fender of Bedford; three daughters: Mrs. Charles (Naomi) Goodrich of Tucson, AZ, Mrs. Darrell (Brenda) Price of Bedford, and Mrs. Wayne (Patricia) Raines of San Jose, CA; ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren; two sisters: Ruth Fender and Kathleen Pirtle, both of Lawrence Co., IN; and one brother, John Fender of Lawrence Co., IN. He was preceded in death by the parents and two brothers, Clovis and Eugene Fender.

Retired from Central Foundry, Ray Fender was a member of U.A.W. Local #440, a veteran of WW II, serving with the U.S. Army, and received the Purple Heart.

Funeral services will be Friday, June 13th, at 11:00 a.m. at The Cresthaven Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Fisher officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Hunter – Gregory S. Hunter, Bedford, passed away on Monday, June 9, 1997, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. Born on May 9, 1975, in Bedford, he was the son of Danny L. and Toni (Huffman) Hunter.

A graduate of Northwestern College with a major in diesel technology, he was a mechanic, and he was a member of Mundell Christian Church.

He is survived by his father; one sister, Mrs. David (Elizabeth) Kern of Bedford; one brother, Bradley Hunter of Bedford; the maternal grandparents, Bernard and Beulah Huffman of Washington Courthouse, OH; the paternal grandparents, Hubert and Pearl Hunter of Bedford; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and one niece and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 12th, at The Mundell Christian Church with the Rev. Bob Terry officiating. Burial will follow in Mundell Cemetery. Ward – Addie Ward, Mitchell, died on Sunday, June 8, 1997, at Bedford Regional Medical Center. The daughter of Luther and Ida (Whitehead) Howard, she was born on January 18, 1921, in Harlan Co., KY. She married William Ward on September 7, 1963, and he survives.

In addition to the husband, she is survived by one daughter, Joyce Tincher of Mitchell, IN; one grandson, Arthur Tincher of Mitchell, IN; two great grandsons; one brother, Dennis Howard of Ypsilanti, MI; one half-sister, Martha Hensley of Harlan Co., KY; two half-brothers, Elbert Morgan of Harlan Co., KY, and Herbert Morgan of Dalton, GA; and several nieces and nephews.

There is no visitation. Graveside rites and burial will be Tuesday, June 10th, at 1:00 p.m. at Port Williams Cemetery, with Bro. Vernon Harries of Louisville, KY, officiating. Services will be under the direction of Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home.

Thompson – Rita Ann Thompson, Bedford, died at the residence on Friday, June 6, 1997. The daughter of Errol Wayne and Gayanne (Franklin) Thompson, she was born on October 24, 1967, in Lawrence County. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are the parents, both of Bedford; three sisters: Rennah White and Tamara Rhodes, both of Bloomington, and Angela Cox of Bedford; one brother, Kevin Hearth of Bedford; the paternal grandparents, Robert and Madline Thompson of Bedford; the maternal grandmother, Violet Duncan of Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by the maternal grandfather, Merle (Hap) Franklin.

Byers – Geneva Byers, Springville, passed away on June 5, 1997, at the Westview Manor Nursing Home. She was born in Lawrence County on May 19, 1915, the daughter of Cyrus and Minnie (Hubbard) Byers.

She was a self-employed seamstress and attended the Avoca Baptist Church.

Surviving is one brother, Fred W. Byers of Springville, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents: two sisters, Dorothy Mae Holmes and Bernadine Andis; and six brothers, Burl, Vance, Dwight, Glen, Gene, and Edwin Byers.

Vaught – Charles W. Vaught, Bedford, died on Wednesday, June 4, 1997, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. The son of Lewis J. and Blanche (Sallee) Vaught, he was born in Lawrence County on January 30, 1913. He married Helen J. Batman on May 22, 1947, and she survives. Also surviving are three daughters–Shirley A. Tirey of Williams, IN, Sharon K. Vaught of Wesley Chapel, FL, and Sheila L. Rogers of Columbus, IN; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Helen Ellis of Bedford; one step-brother, Elbert Enoch of Pittsboro, IN; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Paris Ed Vaught, and one sister, Mary L. Tirey.

A World War II Army veteran, he was retired from Public Service Indiana and was a member of IBEW Local 1393 of Indianapolis.

Mathis – James M. Mathis, Bedford, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 1997. Born in Lawrence County on July 25, 1924, he was the son of Milton and Alta (Foddrill) Mathis. He first married Norma Jean Hall, who died in 1980. He then married Connie Stansbury in 1983, and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Diana Daugherty and Sondra Villarreal, both of Oolitic, IN; one step-son, David Stansbury of Bedford; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, four brothers and one sister.

He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Christian Church, Lions Club, and U.A.W. Local #440, and was a veteran of WW II, serving with the U.S. Navy. He was retired from Central Foundry in 1978.

The funeral service will be at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, June 4th, at The Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. Jim Burks officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Pace – Avis Marie Pace, Bedford, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 1997. She was born on March 6, 1911, in Martin Co., IN, to Thomas and Melinda (Davis) Hardwick. She was a member of Free Methodist Church of Bedford and was retired from Stone City Laundry.

Surviving are two daughters–Barbara Collins of Williams, IN. and Christina Jamison of Bedford; three sisters–Eula Pavey, Mavis Lee and Pearl Woodard, all of Bedford; eight grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Sullivan – Ronald Wayne Sullivan, Bedford, died Sunday, June 1, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born in Lawrence County, IN, on August 22, 1943, he was the son of James and Woneda (Hughes) Sullivan, Sr. He married Grace Beavers on February 4, 1973, and she died March 17, 1997. He is survived by his parents; one daughter, Tammy Calentine of Bedford; two sons, Roger Mitchell of Mitchell, IN, and Kevin Sullivan of Bedford; nine grandchildren; two brothers, James P. Sullivan, Jr. of Tunnelton and Michael L. Sullivan of Bloomington; and two sisters, Linda Phillips of Tunnelton and Beverly Higgs of Mitchell.

He was a disabled war veteran and was a member of the Friendly Bible Church.

Beacher – Creola Beacher, Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 1997 at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born February 25, 1903, in Summerville, IN, she was the daughter of James and Hallie (Gorley) Houchins. She married Jacob Beacher on September 1, 1920, and he preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death were two sisters, Ida Houchins and Verda Tamborini. Surviving are one daughter–Loretta Nelson of Coffeen, IL; three sons–Charles Beacher of Oolitic, IN, Joseph Beacher of Bloomington, IN, and Edward L. Beacher of Edinburg, VA; seven grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; thirteen great, great grandchildren; and one great great great grandchild.

She was retired from NAD Crane in 1970.

Pruett – Betty Pruett, age 70, of Wimauma, FL, and a former resident of Mitchell, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 1997 at South Bay Hospital in Sun City Center, FL. Born January 1, 1927, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of William E. and Flonia (Baugh) Strange. She married George Pruett on April 16, 1946, and he survives. Also surviving are one son, Dan Pruett of San Diego, CA, one sister, Helen Strange, of Mitchell, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Louella Luttrell.

She was a retired inspector at GM Powertrain and of Protestant faith.

Brown – June V. Brown, Oolitic, died May 22, 1997, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. She had been in failing health for the past two years. The daughter of Henry A. Clendenon and Sylvia Jane (Miller) Clendenon, she was born February 15, 1919, in Jackson County, IN. In 1937 she married Al Spires. She married Robert Miller in 1949, and on April 20, 1951, she married Lester Brown, all of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Grace Coulter, Viola Owens, Dorie Wilder, and Ruth Jenkins, and one brother, Henry Clendenon.

She is survived by two sisters, Kate Edwards of Florida and Ester Patton of Bedford, and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was a hardware attendant in Indianapolis for eight years.

On September 4, 1937, she married Andrew Hearth, who preceded her in death. She is survived by one daughter, Betty Edwards of Ellettsville, IN; two sons, Larry D. Hearth and Jerry D. Hearth, both of Bloomington, IN; nine grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary C. Hearth, her parents, and two grandchildren.

She was retired from RCA in Bloomington.

He was an insurance agent, a bail bond agent and a member of Eagles and Elks.

He is survived by two daughters–Malissa Zoeckler of Mt. Vernon, IL and Shonda K. Burton of Columbus, IN; one son, Adam Morgan of Bedford; one grandson, Lucas Champion; one brother, Gary Morgan of Evansville, IN; and his mother, Brownie Morgan of Tell City, IN. He was preceded in death by his father, Oscar Morgan.

Sears – Anna P. Curts Sears of Bedford died Monday, May 19, 1997, at the Bedford Regional Medical Center. She was born February 6, 1914, in Knox County, IN, to David T. and Bridgett (Slaymaker) Curts. On October 15, 1930, she married Leslie Sears, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two children, John Lee Sears and Ronnie Sears, and three sisters and two brothers. Surviving are two sons–David Sears and Leslie Sears, both of Bedford; two daughters–Mrs. Fred (Betty) Ritchie and Clara Noel, both of Bedford; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

She was a homemaker and a member of Old Union Christian Church.

Jackson – Evelyn P. (Richert) Jackson, age 74, of Hilham, TN, died Saturday, May 17, 1997. Born May 29, 1922, in Kentucky, she was the daughter of George and Laura Henderson.

She is survived by two sons–Raymond E. Richert of Clarksville, IN and Ronald W. Richert of Indianapolis, IN; six grandchildren, six great grandchildren; two sisters–Catherine Cox of Indianapolis, IN and Thelma DeAnthony of West Orange, NJ; one brother, Melvin Henderson of Jeffersonville, IN; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Jackson.

She was a homemaker.

She was of Baptist faith.

Terrill – Ford Junior Terrill of Heltonville passed away Wednesday, May 14, 1997, at his residence. He was retired from Reliance Industries in Columbus, IN.

The son of Ford Terrill,Sr. and Ruby Mitchner, he was born on August 28, 1929, in Jackson County, IN. He married Patsy Turpin on April 16, 1949, and she survives. Also surviving are his mother, Ruby, of Nashville; one son, Keith Terrill of Heltonville; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Debra) Hollingsworth, Miss Pamela Crane, both of Bloomington, and Mrs. Marvin (Beverly) Harrell of Medora, IN; one sister, Mrs.William (Donna) Armstrong of Heltonville, IN; one brother, Ed Terrill of Nashville, IN; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, one sister, Wilma Todd and one brother, Jerry Terrill.

Baker – Robert Dale Baker, age 71, of Mitchell, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at his residence.

Born November 29, 1925, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of Millard and Pearl (Voorhies) Baker. He married Mary Wallrath on April 24, 1986, and she survives. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II and a retired security guard.

He is also survived by seven daughters-Ronda Morgan of Bowling Green, KY, Donna Woosley of Morgantown, KY, Sharon Foster of Las Vegas, NV, Nancy Anderson , Stella Baker, Lena Baker and Debbie Baker, all of California; two sons, Robert Baker and Ronnie Wallrath, both of Mitchell; six brothers-Harry Baker, Joseph Baker, Herbert Baker, Kenneth Baker, James Baker, and Michael Baker, all of Bedford; four sisters-Dorothy Stancombe of Mitchell, Sharon Trueblood, Reva Mundy and Elizabeth Fisher, all of Bedford; fifteen grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Burris – Christina M. Burris, age 15, of Loogootee, passed away Monday, May 12, 1997. Born April 18, 1982, in Muncie, IN, she was the daughter of Phillis Garmon and Bobby Burris, who survive. Also surviving are the maternal grandfather, Albert Garmon of Summitville, IN; the paternal grandmother, Betty Whited of Muncie, IN; the maternal great grandmother, Lilian Garmon of Kentucky; aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Zula Garmon; her paternal grandfather, Wesley Burris; and her maternal great grandfather, Sherman Garmon.

She was a member of the Alfordsville Christian Church, a student at Barr-Reeve High School and a member of the Bar-Reeve High School Choir.

Bowden – Bernard N. Bowden, age 82, of Mitchell, passed away Saturday, May 10, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital. Born June 11, 1914, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Noble R. and Grace (Tackett) Bowden. He married Blanche E. Batchelor on March 28, 1937, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jerry Bowden of Mitchell and Lester Bowden of Loogootee; two daughters, Shirley Gross of Mitchell and Karen Carpenter of Phoenix, AZ; two sisters, Mary Taylor and Virginia Burton, both of Mitchell; twelve grandchildren; several step grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; and several step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, and one grandchild.

Bernard Bowden was a member of the Mitchell Church of the Nazarene and a retired employee of Lehigh Portland Cement Company.

Herthel – Helen Williams Herthel, age 88, of Bedford, passed away Monday, May 5, 1997, at Westview Manor Nursing Center. Born June 21, 1908, in Orange County, IN, she was the daughter of Joseph and Alice (Hammond) Williams. On April 25, 1931, she married Verner F. Herthel, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Carmen Perkins, one son, Robert Herthel, and a brother and sister who died in infancy.

She was a housewife and former co-owner of the Herthel Beauty Supply Company in Bloomington. She was active in the Republican Party and a member of Central Church of Christ.

She is survived by one son, Fred Herthel of Bedford and four grandchildren: Debra Stevens, Nick Herthel, Chris Herthel, all of Bedford, Kathy Kaderabek of California, seven great grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

She was retired from Dunn Hospital business office and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bedford, AARP, and the Department Club.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. James M. Williams of Indianapolis, IN, and the Rev. Jerry T. Williams of New York, NY; one daughter, Jean Williams Guthrie of Indianapolis, IN; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Lauderdale, FL; and four brothers, Stanley Cobb and Matt Cobb, both of Bedford, Leonard Cobb of Springville, IN, and Claude Cobb of Mooresville, IN.

Henderson – Gladys Marie Henderson, Bedford, passed away Thursday, May 1, 1997, at Westview Manor. Born June 8, 1919, she was the daughter of Frank and Ida (Hinkle) Grow, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Cain and Edith Stipp, and three brothers, Claude, Arthur, and Cecil Grow.

She married Gerald G. Henderson in December, 1945, and he survives. Also surviving are one son: Gary Henderson of Bedford; two grandchildren; one brother, Floyd Grow of Bedford; and one sister, Goldie Mahan of Bedford.

She was retired from Bedford Utilities Waterworks and was a member of Gulletts Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 3, at The Day & Carter Mortuary, with the Rev. Lewis Williams officiating. Friends may call from 2-9 PM on Friday, May 2, and from 10 AM until the hour of the service on Saturday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Wagner – Mary Berniece Wagner, Oolitic, passed away April 30, 1997, at her residence. Born December 6, 1916, she was the daughter of George W. and Effie (Turner) Jones. In 1934 she married Harold W. Wagner, who preceded her in death. In addition to the parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dencil and Harold Jones. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Carl (Beth) Beauchamp of Bedford; one son, Jon Wagner of Bedford; three grandchildren; one sister, Helen Burger of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews.

She was retired from the office of the Shawswick Twp. Trustee in 1973 and then worked for Lawrence County Welfare Department. She was of Protestant Faith.

Fields – James Fields of Bedford passed away April 29, 1997 at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Born June 9, 1940, in Bedford, IN, he was the son of Charles E and Mildred (Kline) Fields, who preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death was a brother, Fredrick Fields.

On October 30, 1973, he married Retha Taylor, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons: Mike Fields and Jeff Fields, both of Bedford; a daughter, Carrie Fields of Bedford; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

He was a retired fireman and also worked for Tasus Corp. in Bloomington, IN. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Bedford Boat & Sportsman Club, the American Legion Gillen Post #33 and Eagles Lodge Arie #654.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 2, at the Day & Carter Mortuary. Friends may call from 4-9 PM on Thursday, May 1, at the Mortuary. Burial will be at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Lake – Lula P. (Pace) Lake, of Bedford, IN, passed away Sunday, April 27, 1997, at the Hospitality House. She was born October 6, 1903, the daughter of James Alonzo and Minnie Ellen (Goen) Pace. She married Ollie Coulter in 1920, and he preceded her in death. She then married Joseph Edgar Lake in August, 1933, and he preceded her in death.

Surviving are one son, James Everett Coulter, of Bedford, IN; three daughters: Ruth Ellen (Coulter) Holloway of Springville, IN, Bette Ilene (Coulter) Lewis of Williams, IN, and Rebekah Rose (Lake) Hoskins of Indianapolis; one sister, Bertha Davis; sixteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Rose Alpha Coulter and Edith Naomi (Lake) Manion; one son, Joseph Edgar Lake, Jr.; two sisters, 6 brothers, and one grandson.

She was a homemaker and during her last few years she was in Hospitality House.

Funeral services were held at the Day & Carter Mortuary with burial following in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Wright – Katherine B. Wright, age 77, of Tunnelton, passed away Monday, April 21, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital.

Born January 4, 1920, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Perry and Emma (York) McCart. She married William M. Wright on September 4, 1938, and he survives.

She served 27 years as postmaster at Tunnelton and was a member of Postmasters-NAPUS and League of Postmasters. She was a member of Tunnelton United Methodist Church and the WSCS of the church. She was a 1938 graduate of Mitchell High School.

In addition to the husband, she is survived by three sons: William B. Wright of Tunnelton, Richard Wright and Michael E. Wright, both of Bedford; four sisters: Olive Eager of Mitchell, Bonnie Allen of Gulfport, FL, Louise Eggers of Bedford, and Mary Ruth Dyer of Seymour; two brothers, Lowell McCart of Bedford and Bill McCart of Orleans; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Otha McCart and Chriss McCart; two sisters: Fern Wicker and Jewell Zimmerman; and one grandchild.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 23, at the Chastain Funeral Home with Pastor Colleen Lucas officiating. Burial will be in Tunnelton Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8:30 PM Tuesday and from 8:30 AM until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Barnhart – Clinton Jesse (C.J.) Barnhart, age 16, of Mitchell, passed away Sunday, April 20, 1997, at Riley Hospital for Children.

Born December 11, 1980, in Orange County, he was the son of Stan and Donna (Meadors) Barnhart. He was a sophomore at Mitchell High School.

Surviving are his parents; one sister, Hanna Barnhart and two brothers, Andrew Barnhart and Evan Barnhart, all at home; paternal grandparents, Robert and Nancy Barnhart of Fairmount, IN; and maternal grandmother, Edith Meadors Cummings of Point Isabel, IN. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, William Meadors.

A graveside service will be at 4:00 PM Thursday, April 24, at Mitchell Cemetery with Bro. Max Timbrook officiating. Friends may call from 4-9 PM Wednesday at the Chastain Funeral Home.

Alexander – Mildred W. Alexander, age 92, of Mitchell, passed away Thursday, April 17, 1997, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center.

Born August 31, 1904, in Salem, Indiana, she was the daughter of Homer and Maude (Coombs) Wright. She married Russell Alexander September 1, 1925, and he preceded her in death.

She was a 1922 graduate of Mitchell High School and received bachelor's and master's degrees from Indiana University. Mrs. Alexander was a teacher in the Mitchell Community Schools for 28 years. Until recent years she continued to tutor children. She was an artist and in 1994 was selected for the Older Hoosier of the Year Award by Area XV Agency on Aging.

She was a member of the First Christian Church and the choir, Indiana Retired Teachers Association, Lawrence County Retired Teachers Association, Gamma Epsilon chapter of Tri Kappa, Lawrence County Art Association, Fleur de Lis, Order of Eastern Star, Spring FMill Home Economics Club, Past President of Lawrence County Homemakers.

Surviving are one son, Robert Wright Alexander of Lake Placid, FL, one daughter, Patricia Joan Miracle of Bloomington, five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Sunday at the Chastain Funeral Home with the Rev. David Shephard officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 PM Saturday and after 11:00 AM until the service Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mitchell Community Schools Scholarship Foundation in care of the funeral home.

Milligan – Goldie Marie Milligan, age 81, of Mitchell, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 1997, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Born May 3, 1915, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Martin VanBuren and Lucinda (Pemberton) Holt. She married Dick Milligan on September 8, 1934, and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and of the protestant faith.

Surviving are three daughters: Brenda Luchauer of Mitchell, Shirley Mounce of Mitchell, and Lou Etta Sullivan of Independence, MO; one son, Tom Milligan of Mitchell; two brothers, Virgil Holt and Harry Holt, both of Mitchell; thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Ernest Holt and Menlo Holt, and one sister, Silvia Tincher.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday at the Chastain Funeral Home with Elder Steve Epley officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery. Friends may call from 3-8 PM Friday and from 9:00 AM Saturday until the service at the funeral home.

Ray – Curtis (Curt) Ray, age 88, of Mitchell, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehab Center.

Born October 3, 1908, in Lawrence County, IN, he was the son of William and Frances (Burton) Ray. He married Dessie Mae Owen on June 27, 1940, and she preceded him in death. Also preceding him in death were a daughter, Marlene Early, two brothers, Harley Ray and Marvin Ray, two sisters, Lillian Jean and Lena McCart, and four grandsons.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and a retired employee of Carpenter Body Works.

Surviving are three daughters, Edna Flo George of Mitchell, Luella Russell of Mitchell, Lois White of Orleans, one son, Harry William Burton of Bedford, twenty-three grandchildren and and twenty-seven great brandchildren

Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM Friday, April 11th, at the Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Jim Russell officiating. Burial will be in Connerley Switch Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-8 PM Thursday and after 8:30 AM Friday until the service at the funeral home.

In June, 1965, she married Danny Lee Hunter, who survives. Also surviving are the parents of Washington Court House, Ohio, one daughter, Mrs. David (Elizabeth) Kern of Bedford, two sons, Bradley and Gregory Hunter, both of Bedford two grandchildren, two sisters, Lana Stinson and Connie Wilson, both of Ohio, two brothers, Allen and Marty Huffman, both of Ohio, and several neices and nephews. Toni Hunter was a homemaker and a member of Mundell Christian Church. Services will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 22, at the Mundell Christian Church with Bob Terry officiating. Friends may call from 1:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, February 21 at The Day & Carter Mortuary and from 11:00 AM until the hour of the service on Saturday, February 22, at The Mundell Christian Church. Burial will be in Mundell Cemetery.
