Darrell ‘Jack’ Bechner

Nov. 11, 1932 — Nov. 6, 2009

Darrell “Jack” Bechner, 76, of Bedford, passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Friday.

He was born in Bedford in 1932 to Adolph Emil Bechner and Louise Jeanette (Mitchell) Bechner. He married Phyllis Ann Bowden on Nov. 27, 1978, and she survives.

Darrell retired from Cane NWSC in 1989.

He liked to keep busy on his “projects.” He enjoyed working in his gardens and looking after his farm. He would often go visiting family and friends in his little brown truck or on his yellow scooter. He enjoyed traveling. He missed his pet dogs Crickett and Itsy Bitsy. He was a member of Fairview Community Church.

Darrell is survived by his wife Phyllis; his daughters, Shayne Ingals and companion Chris May, Carrie Kirk and companion Curt Hackler; his son, Aaron Bechner; grandchildren, Joshua Bechner, Amber (Bechner) Davis, Paul Kirk, and J. David Ingalls; his brother, David Bechner;; sister, Sheila Peyton; a nephew; nieces; great-grandchildren; and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerry D. Bechner.

It was Darrell’s wish that his body be cremated. At the request of the family, there will be no memorial services.

The family asks that friends consider memorial contributions to the White River Humane Society or the charity of their choice.

Sandra G. House

Sandra G. Beaty House, 62, of Orleans, died Friday morning at Bloomington Hospital in Bloomington.

Sandra was born in Jamestown, Tenn. to her parents, Billy Barlow and Lillian Linder Boles.

She was first married to Dennis Beaty on Oct. 7, 1964, and he preceded in death on Nov. 26, 1998. She then married James House on Oct. 31, 2004 and he survives.

She was employed at Mi-Lin Wood Products in Paoli, Indiana. She was a member of the Lost River Baptist Church.

She is also survived by three sons, Denton Beaty of Paoli, Dennis Beaty of Bedford, and Deanie Beaty of Marengo; one daughter, Patricia Gail Ball of Salem; eleven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; one brother, Clayton Boles of Orleans; and one sister, Faye Wallen of Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents and twin brother, Rudy Boles.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans with Bro. Kevin Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Liberty Christian Cemetery, Orleans.

Friends are invited to call from 3-6 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.

Reba A. Brooking

Aug. 21, 1949 — Nov. 6, 2009

Reba Ann Brooking, 60, , Bedford, died at 9:40 a.m. on Friday at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth, of Bedford; two sons, Jason Brooking, Worthington, and Kyle Brooking, Indianapolis: two sisters, Carolyn Wever, Valparaiso, and Betty Willoughby, Bedford; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with the Rev. David Ferry officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Leila Wilson

April 24, 1926 — Nov. 3, 2009

Leila “Ilene” Wilson, 83, of Bedford, died at 8 a.m. on Tuesday at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born April 24, 1926, in Bedford, she was the daughter of Quincy and Frances (Deckard) Watson. She married George E. Wilson on May 12, 1944 and he died July 24, 1995.

She had worked at Westinghouse/RCA in Bloomington and was a member of the Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Ritter and husband Ron and Rebecca Barrett and husband Edmond, all of Bedford; two sons, Stephen Wilson and wife Linda of Texas, and Donald Wilson of Bedford; nine grandchildren, Cindy Hart, Christy Bowman, Chad Wilson, Trina Hanner, Stacy Robison, Tyler Wilson, Kristen Stewart, Derek Barrett and Gina Barrett; 19 great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma Jean Workman of Bloomington; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three sisters, Ruby Workman, Mary Hazel and Vernetta Chambers.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Valley Mission Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. J. Dean Pickett and the Rev. Duane Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Hanson Cemetery.

Raymond Paledino

April 1, 1947 — Nov. 4, 2009

Raymond “Buddy” Paledino left us on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009. He left behind family and friends broken hearted and lost. To his wife and children, Cathie, Alycia, and Sam Paledino, he was fearless and indomitable. To us, he was bigger than this life. We will never see his like again. We love him much.

He was born April 1, 1947, in Alabama, to Joe and Jane Paledino. His parents, Joe and Ruby Paledino, preceded him in death. Left behind are sisters, Sally Covey Burton and husband Jack of Orleans, Cathy Paledino Horner and husband John of Indianapolis, and one brother Joey Paledino and his companion Regina Chapman of Bedford.

Buddy had earned Eagle Scout distinction in high school, he graduated from Shawswick High School in 1965. As a young man, he served two tours in the Vietnam War. He was a tool & die maker at GM Powertrain in Bedford, retiring in 2006. He was a member of UAW Local No. 440, and member of the Bedford Boat & Sportsman Club.

Family and friends may share Buddy stories at 9 a.m. on Nov. 10 at the Bedford Boat Club.

Bernice I. Losey

Jan. 20, 1952 — Nov. 5, 2009

Bernice I. Losey, 57, Mitchell, passed away at 2 a.m. Thursday at her residence.

Born Jan. 20, 1952, in West Stockholm, New York, she was the daughter of Harold and Marjorie Eve (Wells) Bray. She married Ronald L. Losey August 10, 1968.

She had been employed 10 years at Arby’s and Backyard Burgers, and was a member of the Work of God. Bernice enjoyed making dolls and was an avid book reader.

Surviving are her husband of 41 years, Ronald L. Losey of Mitchell; daughters, Lisa Leach of Bedford, and Kathy Lester and husband Darrin of Springville; grandchildren, Andrew and Amanda Leach and Adam, Jordan, and Justin Lester; sisters, Barb Becksted and Bonnie White, both of New York; and brothers, James Bray, Gerald Bray, Mike Bray, and Bruce Bray, all of New York.

Her parents and brother, Leroy Bray, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Work of God with the Rev. Dwight Dunbar officiating. Another memorial service will be in New York at a later date.

Gloria Jean Correll, 57, of 1615 N St., Bedford, died at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Born Dec. 13, 1951, in Ohio, she was the daughter of John and Minnie Fox Bass. She married Bill Correll on Dec. 28, 1977, and he survives.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Bill, of Bedford; children, John Marshall of Frazeysburg, Ohio, Jill Correll and Steven Correll, both of Bedford; four grandchildren, Alexis Marshall, Sierra Marshall, Skylar Marshall and Madison Marshall; sisters, Victoria Ingram, Margaret Watson and Mildred Bass; brothers, John and Bud Bass; and a beloved niece, Eva Koski.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Marie Garcia.

Frances (Starr) Yeskie, 88, Alexandria, passed away Tuesday at Golden Living, Muncie after an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Bedford, and graduated from Bedford High School.

She was a homemaker.

Frances was a great cook and seamstress. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Doug and Lynda Yeskie of Bloomington, and Mark and Marsan Yeskie of Alexandria; sister, Martha Connell of Indianapolis; sister-in-law, Mary Hatfield of Bedford; six grandchildren and spouses, Scott & Brooke Yeskie of Dallas, Texas, Kyle and Lisa Yeskie of Bloomington, Kelli Mahoney & Douglas Green of Houston, Texas, Brant and Shannon Yeskie of Broad Ripple, Eric and Casie Yeskie of Anderson and Jennifer Yeskie of Anderson; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Richard & Betty Gooding.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Henry R. Yeskie; parents, Lebert & Alma E. (Graves) Starr; and sisters, Katherine Bloyd and Janeta Riseden.

Rose N. Alex

Dec. 2, 1917 — Nov. 3, 2009

Rose Nevajean Alex, 91, of Bedford, formerly of West Lafayette, Bloomington and Naples, Fla., passed away Monday in the Yellow Rose Hospice Unit at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born Dec. 2, 1917, in Switz City, the daughter of the late Charles Franklin and Ella Ethel (Jackson) Conklin. She married Frank Alex on Aug. 17, 1937, and he preceded her in death on June 2, 2008.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Bedford Christian Church. She was a graduate of Ben Davis High School.

Known best for her fabulous culinary skills, she loved spending time with her family, sharing laughter, and many good meals. Neva had many hobbies, just one of which was crossword puzzles. She was so proficient, she always did them in ink. Loved by her large family and many friends, she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her daughters, Sue Kellams and husband Jack of Bedford, Judith Ertl and husband Tom of Carmel, and Janie Lower and husband Norman of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, June Dunn and husband Paul and Mary Lou Bowerman and husband Harold, all of Frankfort, and Sandra Ceder and husband Robert of Sheboygan, Wis.; a brother, Charles “Bud” Conklin and wife Jeanette of Frankfort; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Anne Willoughby and Beulah Willoughby; and brothers, Billie Conklin and David Conklin.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Cloverdale. Interment will be in Clayton Cemetery.

Brian D. Humphrey

May 5, 1957 — Nov. 2, 2009

Brian Dale Humphrey, 52, of 2812 Popcorn Road, Springville, died at 2:10 p.m. on Monday at his residence.

Born May 5, 1957, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Dale and Peggy (Armstrong) Humphrey. He married Tawnya Wagner on Jan. 18, 2008, and she survives.

Brian was a graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School with the class of 1975. He graduated from Purdue University in 1979. He was a self-employed farmer and the Agronomist for the North Lawrence Community Schools and a member of the Springville Feeder Auction Board of Directors from 1983 to present serving as President and manager from 1987 until 2004, Lawrence County Cattlemens’ Association, Lowder Cemetery Board and the Indiana Board of Animal Health Advisory Board from April 2007 until present representing the Livestock marketing sector which is appointed by the Governor. He was a member of various Lawrence County 4-H Clubs and served as leader of the Sheep Club.

Surviving are his loving wife, Tawnya, of Springville; his mother, Peggy, of Springville; three daughters, Holly Carpenter and husband Kyle of Illinois, Gretchen Boshears and husband Jason of Missouri and Samantha Humphrey of Bedford; one son, Chance Humphrey and wife Becki of Bedford; one brother, Craig Allen Humphrey and wife Cindy of Colorado; one sister, Carol Lee Anthony and husband, Dave, of Bloomington; seven grandchildren, Abby and Kenley Carpenter, Jarron and Isaac Boshears, Katelynn and Jenna Wagner and Cameron French; two stepdaughters, Jesse French and husband Ryan of Indianapolis and Nikki Miller and husband Andrew of Shelbyville; one stepson, Josh Wagner and wife Tanya of Bedford; one brother-in-law, Brett Wagner of Bedford; one sister-in-law, Lisa Mowery and husband Rick of Bedford; father-in-law, Bob Wagner of Bedford; mother-in-law, Vonda Wagner of Bedford; three nephews, Aaron Chastain, Brett Humphrey and Colby Mathews; and two nieces, Marcy Humphrey and Brooke Wagner.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Humphrey.

Marjorie F. Isenberg

Marjorie Fish Isenberg, 85, of Bedford, died at 12:57 a.m. Tuesday at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Born April 27, 1924, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of Frobel and Esta (Easton) Norman. She married H. Gene Fish and he preceded her in death on Feb. 2, 1970. She later married Roy Isenberg in April 1982 and he died in 2001.

She retired as a real estate broker and was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Bedford. She was a member of the Merry Widows Group and the Quilters Group at the church and the Women’s Dept. Club.

Survivors include two sons, Douglas N. Fish and wife Kyoko of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Rodney G. Fish and wife Darlene of Bedford; stepchildren, Donald and Bonnie Isenberg, Dwaine and Nancy Isenberg, Juanita Reynolds, Dale and Dora Isenberg, and Roxie LeFever; two grandchildren, Andrea Waldbieser and husband Brian of Mitchell, Matthew Fish and wife Shelly of Bedford; step-grandchildren, Emily, Hattie and Molly Isenberg, Jason Isenberg and wife Jill and Bryan Isenberg, Becky Dotson and husband Brian, and Danelle Isenberg; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Fish and husband Ernest; two brothers, Don Norman and wife Verla, and Kenny Norman and wife Annette; a sister-in-law, Audrey Norman; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; and one brother, Charles Norman.

Robert S. Cox

Nov. 17, 1918 — Nov. 3, 2009

Robert Simpson Cox, 90, of Avoca, died at 8:20 a.m. Tuesday at his residence.

Born Nov. 17, 1918, in Los Angeles, Calif., he was the son of Ebert Cox and Layla (Tinture) Westerfield. He married Dorothy Waggoner and she survives.

Robert worked in a CCC Camp from 1936 to 1939. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving during World War II from 1939 to 1945. He was employed as a truck driver at NWSC Crane from 1947 to 1973.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Avoca; two sons, Dennis Ray Cox and wife Linda of Denver, Colo., and Gregory Dean Cox and wife Susan of Bedford; one halfbrother, James Cox of St. Louis, Mo.; and three halfsisters, Lorraine Cully of St. Louis, Mo., Dorothy Jean Cox of Englewood, N.J., and Kyllene Cox of Piscataway, N.J.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Drexal Cox; and two halfbrothers, Oliver Cox and Frank Westerfield.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at the House of Prayer Church Cemetery with Pastor Bill Raines officiating. Military rites will be accorded at the graveside by members of Gillen Post No. 33 American Legion.

No calling hours are scheduled.

Leo Jenkins

March 20, 1925 — Oct. 24, 2009

Leo Jenkins, 84, of Bedford, and most recently of Purvis, Miss., passed away Oct. 24 at his residence.

Born March 20, 1925, in Bedford, he worked in retail and merchandising and was a member of the First Christian Church in Bedford.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kelly Ann.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Pearl Grace; his children, James Leo and Terrill Jenkins of Lake Texoma, Texas, Julia Anna and Gill McAdory of Purvis, Miss.; his grandchildren, Melissa Saia of Baton Rouge, La., Matthew Lothian of Hattiesburg, Miss., Leslie McAdory of Pearl, Miss., Jennifer Reeves of Maple Valley, Wash., Melinda Short of Port Townsend, Wash., and Shane Villars and Trevor Villars of Lake Dallas, Texas; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Leo joined the Navy in 1942 and served four years on active duty during World War II. He married Pearl Grace Carson on July 14, 1944, while he was home on leave. They grew up together in Bedford, after they met at Thornton Park, when he was 5 years old and she was 3 years old.

Arrangements were made through the Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home in Bedford.

A memorial service will be from 4-5 p.m Saturday at First Christian Church in Bedford.

Joseph A. Butler

Joseph A. Butler passed away Aug. 21 in Paso Robles, Calif., where he lived for 26 years.

He was born in Lawrence County, the son of Bert and Winnie (Brock) Butler. He married June Lytton who preceded him in death.

He worked for Indiana Bell and Pacific Bell for 30 years. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and also a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Surviving are two daughters, Susie Green and Gwen Meier; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces, Kitty Warren of Texas and Melodee Charlesworth, Oolitic; and two nephews, Steve Butler of Oolitic and L.C. Kern of Fayetteville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and three brothers, Olan Ray, Wilber Dale and Maxwell Eugene Butler.

Memorial services were Sept. 2 at the Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home in Paso Robles, Calif.

Cremation was chosen.

Ruth M. Ramey

Feb. 7, 1917 — Nov. 2, 2009

Ruth M. Ramey, 92, of Bedford, died at 8:30 a.m. on Monday at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born Feb. 7, 1917, in Bicknell, she was the daughter of John C. and Henrietta (Butler) Dye. She married George T. Ramey on May 20, 1950, and he preceded her in death in 1993.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Bedford.

Survivors include the children, Richard Ramey and wife Marilyn, Warren “Tom” Ramey and wife Rita, and Ladonna Sue Elkins, all of Bedford, and David Ramey and wife JoAnn of Mooresville; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by daughters, Patricia Godsey and Gloria Bailey; granddaughter, Carla Godsey; her parents; her husband; three brothers, Ward, David and John Dye; and a sister, Martha Fields.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Green Hill Cemetery. Burial will follow.

Virginia L. Jones

Virginia Lee Jones, 67, of Orleans, died Sunday evening at her home.

Lee was born Oct. 14, 1942, in Orleans to Bertram and Hazel Ann (Winkler) Brim. She married Nov. 4, 1960 to Ronald E. Jones and he survives.

She was a florist and worked 25 years at the former Hirscher Flower Shop in Bedford.

She graduated from Orleans High School with the class of 1960. She was a member of the Liberty Christian Church and a member of the Red Hats Club.

Lee is survived by her husband; her son, Thomas Dean Jones of Orleans; her daughter, Lisa Patton of Mitchell; one brother, Lennie Ross Brim of Indianapolis; three sisters, Barbara Brown and Elaine Walt, both of Mitchell, and Margaret Free of New Albany; and four grandchildren, Andrew Jones, Joel Smith, Samantha Smith and Cody Patton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Sue Best and Betty Jo Ann Brim.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home in Orleans, with Bro. Brian Bolton officiating. Burial will be in the Paoli Community Cemetery.

Kimberly Kern, 50, of Mitchell, formerly of 205 Redman Lane, Bedford, died at 4:15 a.m. on Friday in Mitchell.

Born Nov. 21, 1958, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Max and Sue (Walls) Hearth. She married Terry Kern.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her mother, Sue Hearth of Bedford; four daughters, Jessica and Tobbie Kern, and Terri Braun, all of Bedford, and Jennifer Class of Florida; a son, Michael Kern of Bedford; five grandchildren, Marea Enochs, MaryAnna and Elizabeth Barnett, Joseph Braun and Brooklyn Kern; and a sister, Paula Holmes of Bedford.

She was preceded in death by her father, Max Hearth; a son, Aaron Kern; a brother, David Hearth; and a sister, Debra Starr.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday from the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Wade Judy officiating. Burial will follow in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Raymond L. Chastain

Oct. 26, 1919 — Oct. 31, 2009

Raymond L. “Windy” Chastain, 90, Mitchell, passed away at 5:20 a.m. Saturday at Westside Garden Plaza in Indianapolis.

Born Oct. 26, 1919, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Glen and Geneva (Cox) Chastain. He married Agatha Jolley March 17, 1943, and she preceded him in death May 11, 1996.

He had been employed at Carpenter Body Works, Mitchell Motor Sales, NWSC Crane, Harrison Fitch Chevrolet, Western-Southern Insurance, and was retired from Mitchell Supply.

He was a 1940 graduate of Mitchell High School, and a member of the First Christian Church.

Raymond was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and a 60-plus year member of American Legion Post No. 250 and a longtime member of the Honor Guard; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Surviving are a son, Jeffrey Chastain and wife Tamra of Indianapolis; a daughter, Jill Davis and husband Mike of Brownsburg; his best friend, Mary Ely of Mitchell; seven grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Garland (Chastain) Spry Lyon of Elkhart

His parents; wife; brother, Lovell Chastain; and sister, Gretna (Chastain) Lyons Hill Karnes, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday and from 10 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Casketbearers: Trajen Chastain, Travis Chastain, Trent Chastain, Tamara Carroll, Tyson Chastain and Michael Smith.

James F. Compton

July 17, 1946 — Oct. 31, 2009

James F. Compton, 63, of Orleans, died Saturday at his residence after a year-long battle with cancer.

Jim was born July 17, 1946, in Orleans to Willis Gene and Deema (Tolbert) Compton. He married Sandi Tolbert Aug. 7, 1982, and she survives.

He graduated from Orleans High School with the class of 1964. He attended Indiana State University and Northwood Institute.

Jim was a member of the Bethel Community Church and had served as Sunday school superintendent of the Orleans United Methodist Church where he was a member for many years. Jim and Sandi have been a very active part of Jim’s brother Barry’s annual MD Carnival from the beginning.

He served on the Orleans Community School Board of Directors for four years. Jim was a member of the former Orleans Jaycees Club, a member of the Orleans Fire Department, Dogwood Festival chairman in 1980 and 1982, director of the Orleans Ministerial Association Lenten Breakfast, a member of the Little League Program and the Softball Association in Orleans.

Jim worked at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home for many years and at Crawford-Morris Lumber Company in Mitchell before going to work at Paoli Inc. Jim enjoyed working most recently at the French Lick Golf Course and the Valley Links Golf Course most recently.

He is preceded in death by his father, three uncles, James, Woodrow, Ernest and one aunt, Mary Helen Compton.

He is survived by his wife, Sandi Tolbert Compton; one son, Blake Compton; his mother Deema Compton; and brother Barry Compton, all of Orleans; a brother Bill and wife Judy Compton of Pittsboro; five nephews; two nieces; one great-nephew; and one great-niece.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Community Church on Vincennes Road west of Orleans with Bro. David Conley officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Orleans.

Friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ochs-Tetrick Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the church .

The family requests contributions be made to the Bethel Community Church.
